शौनक उवाच॥
Śaunaka said.
पुराणमखिलं तात पिता तेऽधीतवान्पुरा । कच्चित्त्वमपि तत्सर्वमधीषे लोमहर्षणे ॥१-००५-१॥
"Dear, your father had studied the entire ancient text formerly. Have you also studied all that, O Lomaharshana?"
पुराणे हि कथा दिव्या आदिवंशाश्च धीमताम् । कथ्यन्ते ताः पुरास्माभिः श्रुताः पूर्वं पितुस्तव ॥१-००५-२॥
In the Puranas, indeed, divine stories and ancient lineages of the wise are told. Those were formerly heard by us before, from your father.
तत्र वंशमहं पूर्वं श्रोतुमिच्छामि भार्गवम् । कथयस्व कथामेतां कल्याः स्म श्रवणे तव ॥१-००५-३॥
There, I wish to first hear the lineage, O Bhārgava. Tell this story, indeed auspicious in hearing, of yours.
सूत उवाच॥
Sūta said.
यदधीतं पुरा सम्यग्द्विजश्रेष्ठ महात्मभिः । वैशम्पायनविप्राद्यैस्तैश्चापि कथितं पुरा ॥१-००५-४॥
What was studied properly in the past by the best of the twice-born, the great souls, and was also told by Vaiśampāyana and other sages in the past.
यदधीतं च पित्रा मे सम्यक्चैव ततो मया । तत्तावच्छृणु यो देवैः सेन्द्रैः साग्निमरुद्गणैः ॥१-००५-५॥
Hear what was studied by my father and then by me, which is with the gods, with Indra, and with the groups of Agni and Maruts.
पूजितः प्रवरो वंशो भृगूणां भृगुनन्दन ॥१-००५-५॥
Worshipped is the excellent lineage of the Bhṛgus, O son of Bhṛgu.
इमं वंशमहं ब्रह्मन्भार्गवं ते महामुने । निगदामि कथायुक्तं पुराणाश्रयसंयुतम् ॥१-००५-६॥
O Brahman, I narrate to you this lineage of Bhṛgu, O great sage, combined with stories and ancient traditions.
भृगोः सुदयितः पुत्रश्च्यवनो नाम भार्गवः । च्यवनस्यापि दायादः प्रमतिर्नाम धार्मिकः ॥१-००५-७॥
The beloved son of Bhrigu was named Cyavana, a descendant of the Bhrigu lineage. Cyavana's heir was also named Pramati, who was righteous.
प्रमतेरप्यभूत्पुत्रो घृताच्यां रुरुरित्युत ॥१-००५-७॥
The son of Pramati was also born in Ghritachi, indeed named Ruru.
रुरोरपि सुतो जज्ञे शुनको वेदपारगः । प्रमद्वरायां धर्मात्मा तव पूर्वपितामहात् ॥१-००५-८॥
Śunaka, the son of Ruru, who was versed in the Vedas, was born in Pramadvara, a righteous soul, from your great-grandfather.
तपस्वी च यशस्वी च श्रुतवान्ब्रह्मवित्तमः । धर्मिष्ठः सत्यवादी च नियतो नियतेन्द्रियः ॥१-००५-९॥
An ascetic and glorious one, learned and the best knower of Brahman, righteous, truthful, disciplined, and self-controlled.
शौनक उवाच॥
Śaunaka said.
सूतपुत्र यथा तस्य भार्गवस्य महात्मनः । च्यवनत्वं परिख्यातं तन्ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः ॥१-००५-१०॥
O son of a charioteer, as the falling of the great soul Bhārgava is well-known, tell me that as I am asking.
सूत उवाच॥
Sūta said.
भृगोः सुदयिता भार्या पुलोमेत्यभिविश्रुता । तस्यां गर्भः समभवद्भृगोर्वीर्यसमुद्भवः ॥१-००५-११॥
The beloved wife of Bhrigu, known as Puloma, bore an embryo in her, which was born of the seed of Bhrigu.
तस्मिन्गर्भे सम्भृतेऽथ पुलोमायां भृगूद्वह । समये समशीलिन्यां धर्मपत्न्यां यशस्विनः ॥१-००५-१२॥
O carrier of Bhṛgu, then, in that nurtured womb of Pulomā, at the time in the virtuous, lawful wife of the glorious.
अभिषेकाय निष्क्रान्ते भृगौ धर्मभृतां वरे । आश्रमं तस्य रक्षोऽथ पुलोमाभ्याजगाम ह ॥१-००५-१३॥
When Bhrigu, the best of the upholders of dharma, had departed for the consecration, then the demon Puloma indeed came to his hermitage.
तं प्रविश्याश्रमं दृष्ट्वा भृगोर्भार्यामनिन्दिताम् । हृच्छयेन समाविष्टो विचेताः समपद्यत ॥१-००५-१४॥
Having entered the hermitage and seen the blameless wife of Bhrigu, he became unconscious, overcome with heart's desire.
अभ्यागतं तु तद्रक्षः पुलोमा चारुदर्शना । न्यमन्त्रयत वन्येन फलमूलादिना तदा ॥१-००५-१५॥
But that demon Pulomā, beautiful in appearance, invited (him) then with forest fruits and roots.
तां तु रक्षस्ततो ब्रह्मन्हृच्छयेनाभिपीडितम् । दृष्ट्वा हृष्टमभूत्तत्र जिहीर्षुस्तामनिन्दिताम् ॥१-००५-१६॥
But then, O Brahman, the demon, afflicted with desire, having seen her, became pleased there, desiring to take away the blameless her.
अथाग्निशरणेऽपश्यज्ज्वलितं जातवेदसम् । तमपृच्छत्ततो रक्षः पावकं ज्वलितं तदा ॥१-००५-१७॥
Then, in the refuge of fire, he saw the blazing Agni, the fire-god. Then the demon asked the blazing fire.
शंस मे कस्य भार्येयमग्ने पृष्ट ऋतेन वै । सत्यस्त्वमसि सत्यं मे वद पावक पृच्छते ॥१-००५-१८॥
Tell me, whose wife is this, O Agni, asked truly indeed. You are truthful, speak the truth to me, O purifier, to the one asking.
मया हीयं पूर्ववृता भार्यार्थे वरवर्णिनी । पश्चात्त्विमां पिता प्रादाद्भृगवेऽनृतकारिणे ॥१-००५-१९॥
"Indeed, this beautiful woman was previously chosen by me for the purpose of a wife; afterwards, the father gave this to Bhṛgu, the deceiver."
सेयं यदि वरारोहा भृगोर्भार्या रहोगता । तथा सत्यं समाख्याहि जिहीर्षाम्याश्रमादिमाम् ॥१-००५-२०॥
"If this beautifully-thighed woman is indeed Bhṛgu's wife who has gone to a secluded place, then declare the truth, for I wish to leave this hermitage."
मन्युर्हि हृदयं मेऽद्य प्रदहन्निव तिष्ठति । मत्पुर्वभार्यां यदिमां भृगुः प्राप सुमध्यमाम् ॥१-००५-२१॥
"Indeed, my heart is burning today as if with anger, because Bhrigu has obtained this slender-waisted former wife of mine."
तद्रक्ष एवमामन्त्र्य ज्वलितं जातवेदसम् । शङ्कमानो भृगोर्भार्यां पुनः पुनरपृच्छत ॥१-००५-२२॥
Thus having addressed the blazing fire, doubting, he again and again asked the wife of Bhrigu.
त्वमग्ने सर्वभूतानामन्तश्चरसि नित्यदा । साक्षिवत्पुण्यपापेषु सत्यं ब्रूहि कवे वचः ॥१-००५-२३॥
You, O Agni, move inside all beings always; like a witness in virtues and sins, speak the truth, O poet, words.
मत्पूर्वभार्यापहृता भृगुणानृतकारिणा । सेयं यदि तथा मे त्वं सत्यमाख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१-००५-२४॥
"My former wife was abducted by Bhrigu, the deceiver. If this is so, you ought to tell me the truth."
श्रुत्वा त्वत्तो भृगोर्भार्यां हरिष्याम्यहमाश्रमात् । जातवेदः पश्यतस्ते वद सत्यां गिरं मम ॥१-००५-२५॥
Having heard from you, I will take away Bhṛgu's wife from the hermitage. O Agni, seeing this, speak my true words.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सप्तार्चिर्दुःखितो भृशम् । भीतोऽनृताच्च शापाच्च भृगोरित्यब्रवीच्छनैः ॥१-००५-२६॥
Hearing his words, Saptarchi was greatly distressed. Afraid of falsehood and the curse of Bhrigu, he thus spoke slowly.

"Ōm! Lead me from the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, and from death to immortality. Let there be peace, peace, and peace. Ōm!" - Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.3.28
