tato'bhraśikharākārairgiriśṛṅgairalaṅkṛtam। mandaraṃ parvatavaraṃ latājālasamāvṛtam ॥1-16-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभ्रशिखराकारैः (abhraśikharākāraiḥ) - with cloud-peak-like; गिरिशृङ्गैः (giriśṛṅgaiḥ) - mountain peaks; अलङ्कृतम् (alaṅkṛtam) - adorned; मन्दरम् (mandaram) - Mandara; पर्वतवरम् (parvatavaram) - best of mountains; लताजालसमावृतम् (latājālasamāvṛtam) - covered with a network of creepers;]
(Then adorned with cloud-peak-like mountain peaks, Mandara, the best of mountains, covered with a network of creepers.)
Then, Mandara, the best of mountains, was adorned with peaks resembling the tops of clouds and was covered with a network of creepers.
नानाविहगसङ्घुष्टं नानादंष्ट्रिसमाकुलम्। किंनरैरप्सरोभिश्च देवैरपि च सेवितम् ॥१-१६-२॥
nānāvihagasaṅghuṣṭaṃ nānādaṃṣṭrisamākulam। kiṃnarairapsarobhiśca devairapi ca sevitam ॥1-16-2॥
[नाना (nānā) - various; विहग (vihaga) - birds; सङ्घुष्टं (saṅghuṣṭaṃ) - filled with sounds; नाना (nānā) - various; दंष्ट्रि (daṃṣṭri) - fangs; समाकुलम् (samākulam) - crowded; किंनरैः (kiṃnaraiḥ) - by Kinnaras; अप्सरोभिः (apsarobhiḥ) - by Apsaras; च (ca) - and; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by Devas; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; सेवितम् (sevitam) - attended;]
(Filled with the sounds of various birds, crowded with various fangs, attended by Kinnaras, Apsaras, and also by Devas.)
The place was resonant with the sounds of various birds and teemed with creatures having various fangs. It was attended by Kinnaras, Apsaras, and even Devas.
एकादश सहस्राणि योजनानां समुच्छ्रितम्। अधो भूमेः सहस्रेषु तावत्स्वेव प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥१-१६-३॥
ekādaśa sahasrāṇi yojanānāṃ samucchritam। adho bhūmeḥ sahasreṣu tāvatseva pratiṣṭhitam ॥1-16-3॥

तमुद्धर्तुं न शक्ता वै सर्वे देवगणास्तदा। विष्णुमासीनमभ्येत्य ब्रह्माणं चेदमब्रुवन् ॥१-१६-४॥
tam uddhartuṁ na śaktā vai sarve devagaṇās tadā। viṣṇum āsīnam abhyetya brahmāṇaṁ cedam abruvan ॥1-16-4॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उद्धर्तुम् (uddhartum) - to lift; न (na) - not; शक्ताः (śaktāḥ) - able; वै (vai) - indeed; सर्वे (sarve) - all; देवगणाः (devagaṇāḥ) - the groups of gods; तदा (tadā) - then; विष्णुम् (viṣṇum) - Vishnu; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - seated; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - approaching; ब्रह्माणम् (brahmāṇam) - Brahma; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said;]
(Then all the groups of gods were indeed not able to lift him. Approaching seated Vishnu and Brahma, they said this.)
At that time, all the groups of gods were unable to lift him. They approached Vishnu, who was seated, and Brahma, and said this.
भवन्तावत्र कुरुतां बुद्धिं नैःश्रेयसीं पराम्। मन्दरोद्धरणे यत्नः क्रियतां च हिताय नः ॥१-१६-५॥
bhavantāv atra kurutāṃ buddhiṃ naiḥśreyasīṃ parām। mandaroddharaṇe yatnaḥ kriyatāṃ ca hitāya naḥ ॥1-16-5॥
[भवन्तौ (bhavantau) - you both; अत्र (atra) - here; कुरुताम् (kurutām) - do; बुद्धिम् (buddhim) - intellect; नैःश्रेयसीम् (naiḥśreyasīm) - supreme; पराम् (parām) - highest; मन्दरोद्धरणे (mandaroddharaṇe) - in lifting Mandara; यत्नः (yatnaḥ) - effort; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - be made; च (ca) - and; हिताय (hitāya) - for the benefit; नः (naḥ) - of us;]
(You both here do the supreme highest intellect. In lifting Mandara, effort be made and for the benefit of us.)
You both should make the supreme decision here. Let efforts be made to lift Mandara for our benefit.
तथेति चाब्रवीद्विष्णुर्ब्रह्मणा सह भार्गव। ततोऽनन्तः समुत्थाय ब्रह्मणा परिचोदितः ॥ नारायणेन चाप्युक्तस्तस्मिन्कर्मणि वीर्यवान् ॥१-१६-६॥
tatheti cābravīdviṣṇurbrahmaṇā saha bhārgava। tato'nantaḥ samutthāya brahmaṇā paricoditaḥ ॥ nārāyaṇena cāpyuktastasminkarmaṇi vīryavān ॥1-16-6॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - by Brahmā; सह (saha) - with; भार्गव (bhārgava) - Bhārgava; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अनन्तः (anantaḥ) - Ananta; समुत्थाय (samutthāya) - having arisen; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - by Brahmā; परिचोदितः (paricoditaḥ) - urged; नारायणेन (nārāyaṇena) - by Nārāyaṇa; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - told; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; कर्मणि (karmaṇi) - act; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful;]
(Thus, Viṣṇu said along with Brahmā, O Bhārgava. Then Ananta, having arisen, was urged by Brahmā. Also, the powerful one was told by Nārāyaṇa in that act.)
Thus, Viṣṇu, along with Brahmā, spoke to Bhārgava. Then Ananta, having risen, was urged by Brahmā and was also instructed by Nārāyaṇa in that powerful act.
अथ पर्वतराजानं तमनन्तो महाबलः। उज्जहार बलाद्ब्रह्मन्सवनं सवनौकसम् ॥१-१६-७॥
atha parvatarājānaṃ tamananto mahābalaḥ। ujjahāra balādbrahmansavanaṃ savanaukasam ॥1-16-7॥
[अथ (atha) - then; पर्वतराजानम् (parvatarājānam) - king of mountains; तम् (tam) - him; अनन्तः (anantaḥ) - Ananta; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - greatly powerful; उज्जहार (ujjahāra) - lifted; बलात् (balāt) - by force; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; सवनम् (savanam) - sacrifice; सवनौकसम् (savanaukasam) - of the sacrificers;]
(Then Ananta, the greatly powerful, lifted the king of mountains by force, O Brahman, along with the sacrifice of the sacrificers.)
Then the mighty Ananta forcefully lifted the king of mountains, along with the sacrifice and those performing it, O Brahman.
ततस्तेन सुराः सार्धं समुद्रमुपतस्थिरे। तमूचुरमृतार्थाय निर्मथिष्यामहे जलम् ॥१-१६-८॥
tatastena surāḥ sārdhaṃ samudramupatasthire। tamūcuramṛtārthāya nirmathiṣyāmahe jalam ॥1-16-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तेन (tena) - with him; सुराः (surāḥ) - gods; सार्धं (sārdham) - together; समुद्रम् (samudram) - ocean; उपतस्थिरे (upatasthire) - approached; तम् (tam) - him; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; अमृतार्थाय (amṛtārthāya) - for nectar; निर्मथिष्यामहे (nirmathiṣyāmahe) - we shall churn; जलम् (jalam) - water;]
(Then, with him, the gods together approached the ocean. They said to him, "For nectar, we shall churn the water.")
Then, along with him, the gods approached the ocean and said, "We shall churn the ocean for nectar."
अपाम्पतिरथोवाच ममाप्यंशो भवेत्ततः। सोढास्मि विपुलं मर्दं मन्दरभ्रमणादिति ॥१-१६-९॥
apāmpatirathovāca mamāpyaṃśo bhavettataḥ। soḍhāsmi vipulaṃ mardaṃ mandarabhramaṇāditi ॥1-16-9॥
[अपाम् (apām) - of waters; पतिः (patiḥ) - lord; अथ (atha) - then; उवाच (uvāca) - said; मम (mama) - my; अपि (api) - also; अंशः (aṃśaḥ) - part; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सोढास्मि (soḍhāsmi) - I have endured; विपुलं (vipulaṃ) - great; मर्दं (mardaṃ) - pressure; मन्दर (mandara) - Mandara; भ्रमणात् (bhramaṇāt) - from churning; इति (iti) - thus;]
(The lord of waters then said, "May my part also be there; I have endured great pressure from the churning of Mandara.")
The lord of the waters then said, "Let my share also be included; I have borne the immense pressure from the churning of Mount Mandara."
ऊचुश्च कूर्मराजानमकूपारं सुरासुराः। गिरेरधिष्ठानमस्य भवान्भवितुमर्हति ॥१-१६-१०॥
ūcuś ca kūrmarājānam akūpāraṃ surāsurāḥ। girer adhiṣṭhānam asya bhavān bhavitum arhati ॥1-16-10॥
[ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; च (ca) - and; कूर्मराजानम् (kūrmarājānam) - to the king of turtles; अकूपारम् (akūpāram) - Akūpāra; सुरासुराः (surāsurāḥ) - gods and demons; गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the mountain; अधिष्ठानम् (adhiṣṭhānam) - support; अस्य (asya) - this; भवान् (bhavān) - you; भवितुम् (bhavitum) - to become; अर्हति (arhati) - deserve;]
(The gods and demons said to the king of turtles, Akūpāra, "You deserve to become the support of this mountain.")
The gods and demons addressed Akūpāra, the king of turtles, saying that he is worthy of becoming the support for the mountain.
कूर्मेण तु तथेत्युक्त्वा पृष्ठमस्य समर्पितम्। तस्य शैलस्य चाग्रं वै यन्त्रेणेन्द्रोऽभ्यपीडयत् ॥१-१६-११॥
kūrmeṇa tu tathetyuktvā pṛṣṭhamasya samarpitam। tasya śailasya cāgraṃ vai yanreṇendro'bhyapīḍayat ॥1-16-11॥
[कूर्मेण (kūrmeṇa) - by the tortoise; तु (tu) - but; तथेत्युक्त्वा (tathetyuktvā) - having said thus; पृष्ठम् (pṛṣṭham) - the back; अस्य (asya) - his; समर्पितम् (samarpitam) - was placed; तस्य (tasya) - of that; शैलस्य (śailasya) - mountain; च (ca) - and; अग्रं (agraṃ) - the top; वै (vai) - indeed; यन्त्रेण (yanreṇa) - by the machine; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; अभ्यपीडयत् (abhyapīḍayat) - pressed down;]
(By the tortoise, but having said thus, the back of his was placed. Of that mountain and the top indeed by the machine Indra pressed down.)

मन्थानं मन्दरं कृत्वा तथा नेत्रं च वासुकिम्। देवा मथितुमारब्धाः समुद्रं निधिमम्भसाम् ॥ अमृतार्थिनस्ततो ब्रह्मन्सहिता दैत्यदानवाः ॥१-१६-१२॥
manthānaṃ mandaraṃ kṛtvā tathā netraṃ ca vāsukim। devā mathitumārabdhāḥ samudraṃ nidhimambhasām ॥ amṛtārthinastato brahmansahitā daityadānavāḥ ॥1-16-12॥
[मन्थानं (manthānam) - churning stick; मन्दरं (mandaram) - Mandara; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; तथा (tathā) - thus; नेत्रं (netram) - rope; च (ca) - and; वासुकिम् (vāsukim) - Vāsuki; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; मथितुम् (mathitum) - to churn; आरब्धाः (ārabdhāḥ) - began; समुद्रम् (samudram) - ocean; निधिम् (nidhim) - treasure; अम्भसाम् (ambhasām) - of waters; अमृतार्थिनः (amṛtārthinaḥ) - desiring nectar; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together with; दैत्यदानवाः (daityadānavāḥ) - demons and giants;]
(Having made Mandara the churning stick and Vāsuki the rope, the gods began to churn the ocean, the treasure of waters, desiring nectar, then, O Brahman, together with demons and giants.)

एकमन्तमुपाश्लिष्टा नागराज्ञो महासुराः। विबुधाः सहिताः सर्वे यतः पुच्छं ततः स्थिताः ॥१-१६-१३॥

(They, arisen as smoke-masses, cloud-masses with lightning, rained upon the groups of gods worn out by fatigue and heat.)

तस्माच्च गिरिकूटाग्रात्प्रच्युताः पुष्पवृष्टयः। सुरासुरगणान्माल्यैः सर्वतः समवाकिरन् ॥१-१६-१७॥

Here, a great sound arose, resembling the roar of mighty clouds, as the ocean was churned by the Mandara mountain with the help of gods and demons.
तत्र नानाजलचरा विनिष्पिष्टा महाद्रिणा। विलयं समुपाजग्मुः शतशो लवणाम्भसि ॥१-१६-१९॥
tatra nānājalacarā viniṣpiṣṭā mahādriṇā| vilayaṃ samupājagmuḥ śataśo lavaṇāmbhasi ॥1-16-19॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; नाना (nānā) - various; जलचरा (jalacarā) - aquatic creatures; विनिष्पिष्टा (viniṣpiṣṭā) - crushed; महाद्रिणा (mahādriṇā) - by the great mountain; विलयं (vilayaṃ) - destruction; समुपाजग्मुः (samupājagmuḥ) - reached; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - hundreds; लवणाम्भसि (lavaṇāmbhasi) - in the salt water;]

वारुणानि च भूतानि विविधानि महीधरः। पातालतलवासीनि विलयं समुपानयत् ॥१-१६-२०॥
