athāvaraṇamukhyāni nānāpraharaṇāni ca। pragṛhyābhyadravandevānsahitā daityadānavāḥ ॥1-17-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; आवरणमुख्यानि (āvaraṇamukhyāni) - chief coverings; नानाप्रहरणानि (nānāpraharaṇāni) - various weapons; च (ca) - and; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having taken; अभ्यद्रवन् (abhyadravan) - attacked; देवान् (devān) - the gods; सहिता (sahitā) - together; दैत्यदानवाः (daityadānavāḥ) - the demons and giants;]
(Then, having taken chief coverings and various weapons, the demons and giants together attacked the gods.)
Then, the demons and giants, equipped with various weapons and chief coverings, collectively attacked the gods.
ततस्तदमृतं देवो विष्णुरादाय वीर्यवान्। जहार दानवेन्द्रेभ्यो नरेण सहितः प्रभुः ॥१-१७-२॥
tatastadamṛtaṃ devo viṣṇurādāya vīryavān। jahāra dānavendrebhyo nareṇa sahitaḥ prabhuḥ ॥1-17-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत् (tat) - that; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; देवः (devaḥ) - god; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Vishnu; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; जहार (jahāra) - took away; दानवेन्द्रेभ्यः (dānavendrebhyaḥ) - from the lords of the demons; नरेण (nareṇa) - with the man; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(Then the god Vishnu, powerful, having taken that nectar, took it away from the lords of the demons together with the man, the lord.)
Then the powerful god Vishnu, along with the man, took the nectar away from the lords of the demons.
ततो देवगणाः सर्वे पपुस्तदमृतं तदा। विष्णोः सकाशात्सम्प्राप्य सम्भ्रमे तुमुले सति ॥१-१७-३॥
tato devagaṇāḥ sarve papustadamṛtaṃ tadā। viṣṇoḥ sakāśātsamprāpya sambhrame tumule sati ॥1-17-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवगणाः (devagaṇāḥ) - the groups of gods; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पपुः (papuḥ) - drank; तत् (tat) - that; अमृतं (amṛtaṃ) - nectar; तदा (tadā) - then; विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - from Vishnu; सकाशात् (sakāśāt) - from the presence; सम्प्राप्य (samprāpya) - having obtained; सम्भ्रमे (sambhrame) - in confusion; तुमुले (tumule) - in tumult; सति (sati) - being;]
(Then all the groups of gods drank that nectar, having obtained it from the presence of Vishnu, in confusion and tumult.)
Then, in the midst of confusion and tumult, all the groups of gods drank the nectar they had obtained from Vishnu.
ततः पिबत्सु तत्कालं देवेष्वमृतमीप्सितम्। राहुर्विबुधरूपेण दानवः प्रापिबत्तदा ॥१-१७-४॥
tataḥ pibatsu tatkālaṃ deveṣv amṛtam īpsitam। rāhur vibudharūpeṇa dānavaḥ prāpibat tadā ॥1-17-4॥

(Then, at that time, among the gods drinking the desired nectar, Rahu, the demon, drank in the form of a god.)
At that time, when the gods were drinking the desired nectar, Rahu, disguised as a god, drank it too.
तस्य कण्ठमनुप्राप्ते दानवस्यामृते तदा। आख्यातं चन्द्रसूर्याभ्यां सुराणां हितकाम्यया ॥१-१७-५॥
tasya kaṇṭhamanuprāpte dānavasyāmṛte tadā| ākhyātaṃ candrasūryābhyāṃ surāṇāṃ hitakāmyayā ॥1-17-5॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; कण्ठम् (kaṇṭham) - throat; अनुप्राप्ते (anuprāpte) - having reached; दानवस्य (dānavasya) - of the demon; अमृते (amṛte) - nectar; तदा (tadā) - then; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - was told; चन्द्रसूर्याभ्यां (candrasūryābhyāṃ) - by the Moon and the Sun; सुराणाम् (surāṇām) - of the gods; हितकाम्यया (hitakāmyayā) - for the welfare;]
(When the nectar reached the throat of the demon, it was then told by the Moon and the Sun for the welfare of the gods.)
As the nectar reached the demon's throat, the Moon and the Sun informed the gods for their welfare.
ततो भगवता तस्य शिरश्छिन्नमलङ्कृतम्। चक्रायुधेन चक्रेण पिबतोऽमृतमोजसा ॥१-१७-६॥
tato bhagavatā tasya śiraśchinnamalaṅkṛtam। cakrāyudhena cakreṇa pibato'mṛtamojaśā ॥1-17-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the Lord; तस्य (tasya) - his; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; छिन्नम् (chinnam) - cut off; अलङ्कृतम् (alaṅkṛtam) - adorned; चक्रायुधेन (cakrāyudhena) - by the discus weapon; चक्रेण (cakreṇa) - by the discus; पिबतः (pibataḥ) - drinking; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; ओजसा (ojaśā) - with power;]
(Then by the Lord, his head was cut off and adorned by the discus weapon, while drinking nectar with power.)

तच्छैलशृङ्गप्रतिमं दानवस्य शिरो महत्। चक्रेणोत्कृत्तमपतच्चालयद्वसुधातलम् ॥१-१७-७॥
tacchailaśṛṅgapratimaṃ dānavasya śiro mahat। cakreṇotkṛttamapataccālayadvasudhātalam ॥1-17-7॥
[तत् (tat) - that; शैल (śaila) - mountain; शृङ्ग (śṛṅga) - peak; प्रतिमं (pratimaṃ) - like; दानवस्य (dānavasya) - of the demon; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; महत् (mahat) - great; चक्रेण (cakreṇa) - by the discus; उत्कृत्तम् (utkṛttam) - severed; अपतत् (apatat) - fell; चालयत् (cālayat) - shaking; वसुधातलम् (vasudhātalam) - the earth;]
(That great head of the demon, like a mountain peak, was severed by the discus and fell, shaking the earth.)

ततो वैरविनिर्बन्धः कृतो राहुमुखेन वै। शाश्वतश्चन्द्रसूर्याभ्यां ग्रसत्यद्यापि चैव तौ ॥१-१७-८॥
tato vairavinirbandhaḥ kṛto rāhumukhena vai। śāśvataścandrasūryābhyāṃ grasatyadyāpi caiva tau ॥1-17-8॥

(Then enmity was indeed made by the face of Rāhu. Even today, he eternally grasps the moon and the sun.)

विहाय भगवांश्चापि स्त्रीरूपमतुलं हरिः। नानाप्रहरणैर्भीमैर्दानवान्समकम्पयत् ॥१-१७-९॥
vihāya bhagavāṃścāpi strīrūpamatulaṃ hariḥ। nānāpraharaṇairbhīmairdānavānsamakampayat ॥1-17-9॥

(Leaving behind the Lord also, Hari in an incomparable female form, shook the demons with various terrible weapons.)

ततः प्रवृत्तः सङ्ग्रामः समीपे लवणाम्भसः। सुराणामसुराणां च सर्वघोरतरो महान् ॥१-१७-१०॥
tataḥ pravṛttaḥ saṅgrāmaḥ samīpe lavaṇāmbhasaḥ। surāṇāmasurāṇāṃ ca sarvaghorataro mahān ॥1-17-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रवृत्तः (pravṛttaḥ) - commenced; सङ्ग्रामः (saṅgrāmaḥ) - battle; समीपे (samīpe) - near; लवणाम्भसः (lavaṇāmbhasaḥ) - salt water; सुराणाम् (surāṇām) - of the gods; असुराणाम् (asurāṇām) - of the demons; च (ca) - and; सर्वघोरतरः (sarvaghorataraḥ) - most terrifying; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(Then commenced a battle near the salt water, most terrifying and great, of the gods and the demons.)
Then a great and most terrifying battle commenced near the salt water between the gods and the demons.
प्रासाः सुविपुलास्तीक्ष्णा न्यपतन्त सहस्रशः। तोमराश्च सुतीक्ष्णाग्राः शस्त्राणि विविधानि च ॥१-१७-११॥
prāsāḥ suvipulāstīkṣṇā nyapatanta sahasraśaḥ| tomarāśca sutīkṣṇāgrāḥ śastrāṇi vividhāni ca ॥1-17-11॥
[प्रासाः (prāsāḥ) - spears; सुविपुलाः (suvipulāḥ) - very large; तीक्ष्णाः (tīkṣṇāḥ) - sharp; न्यपतन्त (nyapatanta) - fell; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - in thousands; तोमराः (tomarāḥ) - javelins; च (ca) - and; सुतीक्ष्णाग्राः (sutīkṣṇāgrāḥ) - with sharp points; शस्त्राणि (śastrāṇi) - weapons; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; च (ca) - and;]
(Spears, very large and sharp, fell in thousands. Javelins and various weapons with sharp points also (fell).)
Thousands of large and sharp spears fell, along with javelins and various other sharp-pointed weapons.
ततोऽसुराश्चक्रभिन्ना वमन्तो रुधिरं बहु। असिशक्तिगदारुग्णा निपेतुर्धरणीतले ॥१-१७-१२॥
tato'surāścakrabhinnā vamanto rudhiraṃ bahuḥ। asiśaktigadārugṇā nipeturdharaṇītale ॥1-17-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; असुराः (asurāḥ) - demons; चक्रभिन्नाः (cakrabhinnāḥ) - pierced by discs; वमन्तः (vamantaḥ) - vomiting; रुधिरम् (rudhiram) - blood; बहु (bahu) - much; असि (asi) - swords; शक्ति (śakti) - spears; गदा (gadā) - maces; अरुग्णाः (arugṇāḥ) - wounded; निपेतुः (nipetuḥ) - fell; धरणीतले (dharaṇītale) - on the ground;]
(Then the demons, pierced by discs, vomiting much blood, wounded by swords, spears, and maces, fell on the ground.)
Then the demons, pierced by discs and vomiting blood, fell heavily on the ground, wounded by swords, spears, and maces.
छिन्नानि पट्टिशैश्चापि शिरांसि युधि दारुणे। तप्तकाञ्चनजालानि निपेतुरनिशं तदा ॥१-१७-१३॥
Chinnāni paṭṭiśaiś cāpi śirāṃsi yudhi dāruṇe। Taptakāñcanajālāni nipetur aniśaṃ tadā ॥1-17-13॥

(The heads were cut off with swords in the fierce battle. The golden nets constantly fell then.)
In the fierce battle, heads were severed by swords, and golden nets continuously fell.
रुधिरेणावलिप्ताङ्गा निहताश्च महासुराः। अद्रीणामिव कूटानि धातुरक्तानि शेरते ॥१-१७-१४॥
rudhireṇāvaliptāṅgā nihatāśca mahāsurāḥ। adrīṇāmiva kūṭāni dhāturaktāni śerate ॥1-17-14॥
[रुधिरेण (rudhireṇa) - with blood; आवलिप्त (avalipta) - smeared; अङ्गाः (aṅgāḥ) - limbs; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - killed; च (ca) - and; महासुराः (mahāsurāḥ) - great demons; अद्रीणाम् (adrīṇām) - of mountains; इव (iva) - like; कूटानि (kūṭāni) - peaks; धातु (dhātu) - mineral; रक्तानि (raktāni) - red; शेरते (śerate) - lie;]
(With blood-smeared limbs, the great demons, killed, lie like the red peaks of mountains.)
The great demons, with their limbs smeared in blood, lay slain, resembling the red peaks of mountains.
हाहाकारः समभवत्तत्र तत्र सहस्रशः। अन्योन्यं छिन्दतां शस्त्रैरादित्ये लोहितायति ॥१-१७-१५॥
hāhākāraḥ samabhavattatra tatra sahasraśaḥ। anyonyaṃ chindatāṃ śastrairāditye lohitāyati ॥1-17-15॥
[हाहाकारः (hāhākāraḥ) - uproar; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose; तत्र (tatra) - there; तत्र (tatra) - there; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - in thousands; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyaṃ) - each other; छिन्दताम् (chindatām) - cutting; शस्त्रैः (śastraiḥ) - with weapons; आदित्ये (āditye) - as the sun; लोहितायति (lohitāyati) - reddens;]
(An uproar arose there in thousands, cutting each other with weapons as the sun reddens.)
There was a great uproar in thousands of places, as they cut each other with weapons while the sun turned red.
परिघैश्चायसैः पीतैः संनिकर्षे च मुष्टिभिः। निघ्नतां समरेऽन्योन्यं शब्दो दिवमिवास्पृशत् ॥१-१७-१६॥
parighaiś cāyasaiḥ pītaiḥ saṃnikarṣe ca muṣṭibhiḥ| nighnatāṃ samare'nyonyaṃ śabdo divam ivāspṛśat ॥1-17-16॥
[परिघैः (parighaiḥ) - with iron bars; च (ca) - and; आयसैः (āyasaiḥ) - with iron; पीतैः (pītaiḥ) - yellow; सन्निकर्षे (saṃnikarṣe) - in proximity; च (ca) - and; मुष्टिभिः (muṣṭibhiḥ) - with fists; निघ्नताम् (nighnatām) - striking; समरे (samare) - in battle; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyam) - each other; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; दिवम् (divam) - the sky; इव (iva) - like; अस्पृशत् (aspṛśat) - touched;]
(With iron bars and yellow iron, in proximity and with fists, striking each other in battle, the sound touched the sky like.)
The sound of warriors striking each other with iron bars and fists in close combat echoed as if it touched the sky.
छिन्धि भिन्धि प्रधावध्वं पातयाभिसरेति च। व्यश्रूयन्त महाघोराः शब्दास्तत्र समन्ततः ॥१-१७-१७॥
chindhi bhindhi pradhāvadhvaṃ pātayābhisareti ca। vyaśrūyanta mahāghorāḥ śabdāstatra samantataḥ ॥1-17-17॥
[छिन्धि (chindhi) - cut; भिन्धि (bhindhi) - pierce; प्रधावध्वं (pradhāvadhvaṃ) - run swiftly; पातय (pātaya) - cause to fall; अभिसर (abhisara) - attack; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; व्यश्रूयन्त (vyaśrūyanta) - were heard; महाघोराः (mahāghorāḥ) - very terrible; शब्दाः (śabdāḥ) - sounds; तत्र (tatra) - there; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - all around;]
(Cut, pierce, run swiftly, cause to fall, attack, thus and were heard very terrible sounds there all around.)
The very terrible sounds of 'Cut, pierce, run swiftly, cause to fall, attack' were heard all around there.
एवं सुतुमुले युद्धे वर्तमाने भयावहे। नरनारायणौ देवौ समाजग्मतुराहवम् ॥१-१७-१८॥
evaṃ sutumule yuddhe vartamāne bhayāvahe। naranārāyaṇau devau samājaghmaturāhavam ॥1-17-18॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सुतुमुले (sutumule) - very tumultuous; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; वर्तमाने (vartamāne) - ongoing; भयावहे (bhayāvahe) - fearful; नरनारायणौ (naranārāyaṇau) - Nara and Narayana; देवौ (devau) - the divine ones; समाजग्मतुः (samājaghmatuḥ) - arrived; आहवम् (āhavam) - to the battlefield;]
(Thus, in the very tumultuous and ongoing fearful battle, Nara and Narayana, the divine ones, arrived at the battlefield.)
In the midst of the intense and terrifying battle, the divine sages Nara and Narayana arrived at the battlefield.
तत्र दिव्यं धनुर्दृष्ट्वा नरस्य भगवानपि। चिन्तयामास वै चक्रं विष्णुर्दानवसूदनम् ॥१-१७-१९॥
tatra divyaṃ dhanurdṛṣṭvā narasya bhagavānapi। cintayāmāsa vai cakraṃ viṣṇurdānavasūdanam ॥1-17-19॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; दिव्यं (divyaṃ) - divine; धनुर्दृष्ट्वा (dhanurdṛṣṭvā) - bow having seen; नरस्य (narasya) - of the man; भगवानपि (bhagavānapi) - the Lord also; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - thought; वै (vai) - indeed; चक्रं (cakraṃ) - discus; विष्णुर्दानवसूदनम् (viṣṇurdānavasūdanam) - Vishnu, the slayer of demons;]
(There, having seen the divine bow of the man, the Lord also thought indeed about the discus, Vishnu, the slayer of demons.)
There, upon seeing the divine bow of the man, even the Lord Vishnu, the slayer of demons, contemplated the discus.
ततोऽम्बराच्चिन्तितमात्रमागतं; महाप्रभं चक्रममित्रतापनम्। विभावसोस्तुल्यमकुण्ठमण्डलं; सुदर्शनं भीममजय्यमुत्तमम् ॥१-१७-२०॥
tato'mbarāccintitamātramāgataṃ; mahāprabhaṃ cakramamitratāpanam. vibhāvasostulyamakuṇṭhamaṇḍalaṃ; sudarśanaṃ bhīmamajayyamutamam ॥1-17-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अम्बरात् (ambarāt) - from the sky; चिन्तितमात्रम् (cintitamātram) - merely thought of; आगतं (āgatam) - arrived; महाप्रभम् (mahāprabham) - greatly radiant; चक्रम् (cakram) - disc; अमित्रतापनम् (amitratāpanam) - tormentor of foes; विभावसः (vibhāvasoḥ) - of the sun; तुल्यम् (tulyam) - equal; अकुण्ठमण्डलम् (akuṇṭhamaṇḍalam) - with an unbroken circumference; सुदर्शनम् (sudarśanam) - Sudarshana; भीमम् (bhīmam) - terrible; अजय्यम् (ajayyām) - invincible; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent;]
(Then, from the sky, merely thought of, arrived the greatly radiant disc, tormentor of foes, equal to the sun, with an unbroken circumference, Sudarshana, terrible, invincible, excellent.)
Then, merely by thought, the Sudarshana Chakra, a greatly radiant and invincible disc, tormentor of foes, equal to the sun with its unbroken circumference, arrived from the sky, terrible and excellent.
तदागतं ज्वलितहुताशनप्रभं; भयङ्करं करिकरबाहुरच्युतः। मुमोच वै चपलमुदग्रवेगव; न्महाप्रभं परनगरावदारणम् ॥१-१७-२१॥
tad-āgataṃ jvalita-hutāśana-prabhaṃ; bhayaṅkaraṃ karikara-bāhur-acyutaḥ। mumoca vai capalam-udagravegava; n-mahāprabhaṃ paranagarāvadāraṇam ॥1-17-21॥
[तत् (tat) - that; आगतं (āgatam) - arrived; ज्वलित (jvalita) - blazing; हुताशन (hutāśana) - fire; प्रभं (prabhaṃ) - light; भयङ्करं (bhayaṅkaraṃ) - terrifying; करिकर (karikara) - elephant-like; बाहुः (bāhuḥ) - arm; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - Acyuta; मुमोच (mumoca) - released; वै (vai) - indeed; चपलम् (capalam) - swift; उदग्रवेगम् (udagravegam) - with great speed; महाप्रभं (mahāprabhaṃ) - great light; परनगर (paranagara) - enemy city; आवदारणम् (āvadāraṇam) - destruction;]
(Then Acyuta, with elephant-like arms, released the blazing fire light, terrifying and swift, with great speed, for the destruction of the enemy city.)
Acyuta, with arms like those of an elephant, unleashed a terrifying and swift blaze, a great light, to destroy the enemy city.
तदन्तकज्वलनसमानवर्चसं; पुनः पुनर्न्यपतत वेगवत्तदा। विदारयद्दितिदनुजान्सहस्रशः; करेरितं पुरुषवरेण संयुगे ॥१-१७-२२॥
tadantakajvalanasamānavarcasaṃ; punaḥ punarnyapatata vegavattadā| vidārayadditidanujānsahasraśaḥ; kareritaṃ puruṣavareṇa saṃyuge ॥1-17-22॥
[तदन्तकज्वलनसमानवर्चसं (tadantakajvalanasamānavarcasaṃ) - having brilliance equal to the fire of destruction; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; न्यपतत (nyapatata) - fell down; वेगवत् (vegavat) - with speed; तदा (tadā) - then; विदारयत् (vidārayat) - tearing apart; दिति (diti) - Diti; दनुजान् (danujān) - demons; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; कर (kara) - by hand; इतम् (itam) - sent; पुरुषवरेण (puruṣavareṇa) - by the best of men; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(Having brilliance equal to the fire of destruction, again and again, he fell down with speed then, tearing apart the demons of Diti by thousands, sent by hand by the best of men in battle.)

(Then, having obtained victory by the gods, Mandara was taken to his own place, well-worshipped. Having sounded the sky and the heaven, all the clouds then went as they came.)

(Then the gods, having attained supreme abundant joy, indeed made the nectar well-placed. And gave that treasure of nectar to the crowned one, Indra, to protect, together with the immortals.)
Then the gods, having achieved supreme joy, carefully secured the nectar. They entrusted this treasure of immortality to Indra, the crowned one, to guard it along with the other immortals.
