सूत उवाच॥
Sūta said:
ततो रजन्यां व्युष्टायां प्रभात उदिते रवौ। कद्रूश्च विनता चैव भगिन्यौ ते तपोधन ॥१-१९-१॥
Then, at night, when the dawn broke and the sun rose, Kadrū and Vinata, the two sisters, approached the ascetic sage.
अमर्षिते सुसंरब्धे दास्ये कृतपणे तदा। जग्मतुस्तुरगं द्रष्टुमुच्छैःश्रवसमन्तिकात् ॥१-१९-२॥
In a fit of anger and intense rage, the servants, having placed a bet, went to see the horse Uchchaihshravas up close.
ददृशाते तदा तत्र समुद्रं निधिमम्भसाम्। तिमिङ्गिलझषाकीर्णं मकरैरावृतं तथा ॥१-१९-३॥
Then they saw the ocean there, which was a treasure of waters, teeming with whales and fishes, and covered with crocodiles.
सत्त्वैश्च बहुसाहस्रैर्नानारूपैः समावृतम्। उग्रैर्नित्यमनाधृष्यं कूर्मग्राहसमाकुलम् ॥१-१९-४॥
The place was surrounded by countless beings of various forms, always fierce and unassailable, teeming with turtles and crocodiles.
आकरं सर्वरत्नानामालयं वरुणस्य च। नागानामालयं रम्यमुत्तमं सरितां पतिम् ॥१-१९-५॥
This is the mine of all jewels, the abode of Varuna and serpents, beautiful and excellent, and the lord of rivers.
पातालज्वलनावासमसुराणां च बन्धनम्। भयङ्करं च सत्त्वानां पयसां निधिमर्णवम् ॥१-१९-६॥
The abode of fire in the netherworld serves as the prison for demons and is terrifying to all beings; it is the oceanic treasure of waters.
शुभं दिव्यममर्त्यानाममृतस्याकरं परम्। अप्रमेयमचिन्त्यं च सुपुण्यजलमद्भुतम् ॥१-१९-७॥
This is the auspicious and divine supreme source of nectar for the immortals; it is immeasurable, inconceivable, and contains wonderful holy water.
घोरं जलचरारावरौद्रं भैरवनिस्वनम्। गम्भीरावर्तकलिलं सर्वभूतभयङ्करम् ॥१-१९-८॥
The terrible and loud roar of the frightening aquatic creatures, with deep whirlpools, is terrifying to all beings.
वेलादोलानिलचलं क्षोभोद्वेगसमुत्थितम्। वीचीहस्तैः प्रचलितैर्नृत्यन्तमिव सर्वशः ॥१-१९-९॥
The wind, swinging along the shore, stirred by agitation and excitement, seemed to dance everywhere with the moving hands of the waves.
चन्द्रवृद्धिक्षयवशादुद्वृत्तोर्मिदुरासदम्। पाञ्चजन्यस्य जननं रत्नाकरमनुत्तमम् ॥१-१९-१०॥
The ocean, known as Ratnākara, became difficult to approach due to the swelling waves caused by the moon's waxing and waning. This led to the birth of Pāñcajanya, the excellent conch.
गां विन्दता भगवता गोविन्देनामितौजसा। वराहरूपिणा चान्तर्विक्षोभितजलाविलम् ॥१-१९-११॥
The blessed Govinda, with immeasurable energy, took the form of a boar to recover the earth, which was submerged in the muddy and agitated waters.
ब्रह्मर्षिणा च तपता वर्षाणां शतमत्रिणा। अनासादितगाधं च पातालतलमव्ययम् ॥१-१९-१२॥
The sage Atri, through his austerity, spent a hundred years reaching the imperishable depths of the netherworld.
अध्यात्मयोगनिद्रां च पद्मनाभस्य सेवतः। युगादिकालशयनं विष्णोरमिततेजसः ॥१-१९-१३॥
The spiritual sleep of union of Padmanabha, who serves Vishnu of immeasurable splendor, reclining at the beginning of an age.
वडवामुखदीप्ताग्नेस्तोयहव्यप्रदं शुभम्। अगाधपारं विस्तीर्णमप्रमेयं सरित्पतिम् ॥१-१९-१४॥
The auspicious ocean, blazing with the mouth of submarine fire, is an unfathomable, vast, and immeasurable lord of rivers.
महानदीभिर्बह्वीभिः स्पर्धयेव सहस्रशः। अभिसार्यमाणमनिशं ददृशाते महार्णवम् ॥१-१९-१५॥
They saw the great ocean being approached constantly by thousands, as if in competition with many great rivers.
गम्भीरं तिमिमकरोग्रसङ्कुलं तं; गर्जन्तं जलचररावरौद्रनादैः। विस्तीर्णं ददृशतुरम्बरप्रकाशं; तेऽगाधं निधिमुरुमम्भसामनन्तम् ॥१-१९-१६॥
They observed the profound ocean teeming with fierce whales and sharks, echoing with the thunderous sounds of sea creatures, vast and shining like the sky, an immeasurable treasure of boundless waters.
इत्येवं झषमकरोर्मिसङ्कुलं तं; गम्भीरं विकसितमम्बरप्रकाशम्। पातालज्वलनशिखाविदीपितं तं; पश्यन्त्यौ द्रुतमभिपेततुस्तदानीम् ॥१-१९-१७॥
Thus, seeing the deep waters full of fish and crocodiles, illuminated by the flames of the netherworld and the expanded sky light, they quickly approached at that moment.
