[तं (taṃ) - that; समुद्रम् (samudram) - ocean; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - crossing; कद्रूः (kadrūḥ) - Kadrū; विनतया (vinatayā) - with Vinatā; सह (saha) - together; न्यपतत् (nyapatat) - descended; तुरगाभ्याशे (turagābhyāśe) - near the horse; नचिरात् (nacirāt) - soon; इव (iva) - like; शीघ्रगा (śīghragā) - swiftly;]
(Crossing that ocean, Kadrū, together with Vinatā, descended near the horse, soon like swiftly.)
Kadrū and Vinatā, after crossing the ocean, quickly descended near the horse.
निशाम्य च बहून्वालान्कृष्णान्पुच्छं समाश्रितान्। विनतां विषण्णवदनां कद्रूर्दास्ये न्ययोजयत् ॥१-२०-२॥
niśāmya ca bahūnvālānkṛṣṇānpucchaṃ samāśritān। vinatāṃ viṣaṇṇavadanāṃ kadrūrdāsye nyayojayat ॥1-20-2॥
[निशाम्य (niśāmya) - hearing; च (ca) - and; बहून् (bahūn) - many; वालान् (vālān) - tails; कृष्णान् (kṛṣṇān) - black; पुच्छं (pucchaṃ) - tail; समाश्रितान् (samāśritān) - residing; विनताम् (vinatām) - Vinata; विषण्णवदनाम् (viṣaṇṇavadanām) - with a distressed face; कद्रूः (kadrūḥ) - Kadru; दास्ये (dāsye) - in servitude; न्ययोजयत् (nyayojayat) - engaged;]
(Hearing and seeing many black tails residing, Kadru engaged Vinata, who had a distressed face, in servitude.)
Upon hearing and seeing the many black tails, Kadru, noticing Vinata's distressed face, engaged her in servitude.
ततः सा विनता तस्मिन्पणितेन पराजिता। अभवद्दुःखसन्तप्ता दासीभावं समास्थिता ॥१-२०-३॥
tataḥ sā vinatā tasminpaṇitena parājitā। abhavadduḥkhasantaptā dāsībhāvaṃ samāsthitā ॥1-20-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; विनता (vinatā) - Vinata; तस्मिन्पणितेन (tasminpaṇitena) - by that wager; पराजिता (parājitā) - defeated; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; दुःखसन्तप्ता (duḥkhasantaptā) - afflicted with sorrow; दासीभावं (dāsībhāvaṃ) - servitude; समास्थिता (samāsthitā) - assumed;]
(Then she, Vinata, was defeated by that wager. Afflicted with sorrow, she assumed servitude.)
Then Vinata, having been defeated by that wager, became afflicted with sorrow and accepted a state of servitude.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे चैव गरुडः काल आगते। विना मात्रा महातेजा विदार्याण्डमजायत ॥१-२०-४॥
etasminnantare caiva garuḍaḥ kāla āgate। vinā mātrā mahātejā vidāryāṇḍamajāyata ॥1-20-4॥
[एतस्मिन् (etasmin) - in this; अन्तरे (antare) - interval; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गरुडः (garuḍaḥ) - Garuda; काल (kāla) - time; आगते (āgate) - having come; विना (vinā) - without; मात्रा (mātrā) - mother; महातेजा (mahātejā) - greatly powerful; विदार्य (vidārya) - having split; अण्डम् (aṇḍam) - egg; अजायत (ajāyata) - was born;]
(In this interval indeed, Garuda, when the time came, was born greatly powerful, having split the egg, without a mother.)
During this time, Garuda, the greatly powerful being, was born from the egg without a mother, as the destined time arrived.
अग्निराशिरिवोद्भासन्समिद्धोऽतिभयङ्करः। प्रवृद्धः सहसा पक्षी महाकायो नभोगतः ॥१-२०-५॥
agnirāśirivodbhāsansamiddho'tibhayaṅkaraḥ। pravṛddhaḥ sahasā pakṣī mahākāyo nabhogataḥ ॥1-20-5॥
[अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; आशिः (āśiḥ) - heap; इव (iva) - like; उद्भासन् (udbhāsan) - shining; समिद्धः (samiddhaḥ) - kindled; अतिभयङ्करः (atibhayaṅkaraḥ) - very terrifying; प्रवृद्धः (pravṛddhaḥ) - grown; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; पक्षी (pakṣī) - bird; महाकायः (mahākāyaḥ) - great-bodied; नभोगतः (nabhogataḥ) - gone to the sky;]
(Like a heap of fire, shining, kindled, very terrifying, grown suddenly, the bird with a great body went to the sky.)
The bird, with its enormous body, suddenly grew and ascended to the sky, shining like a blazing heap of fire, appearing very terrifying.
तं दृष्ट्वा शरणं जग्मुः प्रजाः सर्वा विभावसुम्। प्रणिपत्याब्रुवंश्चैनमासीनं विश्वरूपिणम् ॥१-२०-६॥
taṁ dṛṣṭvā śaraṇaṁ jagmuḥ prajāḥ sarvā vibhāvasum। praṇipatyābruvaṁścaienamāsīnaṁ viśvarūpiṇam ॥1-20-6॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; शरणं (śaraṇam) - refuge; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; विभावसुम् (vibhāvasum) - Agni; प्रणिपत्य (praṇipatya) - having bowed down; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - to him; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - sitting; विश्वरूपिणम् (viśvarūpiṇam) - universal form;]
(Having seen him, all creatures went to Agni for refuge; having bowed down, they said to him, who was sitting in universal form.)
Upon seeing him, all beings sought refuge in Agni. They bowed and spoke to him, who was seated in his universal form.
अग्ने मा त्वं प्रवर्धिष्ठाः कच्चिन्नो न दिधक्षसि। असौ हि राशिः सुमहान्समिद्धस्तव सर्पति ॥१-२०-७॥
agne mā tvaṃ pravardhiṣṭhāḥ kaccinno na didhakṣasi। asau hi rāśiḥ sumahānsamiddhastava sarpati ॥1-20-7॥
[अग्ने (agne) - O Agni; मा (mā) - do not; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; प्रवर्धिष्ठाः (pravardhiṣṭhāḥ) - grow excessively; कच्चित् (kaccit) - perhaps; नः (naḥ) - us; न (na) - not; दिधक्षसि (didhakṣasi) - burn; असौ (asau) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; राशिः (rāśiḥ) - heap; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; समिद्धः (samiddhaḥ) - kindled; तव (tava) - your; सर्पति (sarpati) - spreads;]
(O Agni, do not grow excessively; perhaps you will not burn us. This heap, indeed, very great, kindled, spreads your.)

नैतदेवं यथा यूयं मन्यध्वमसुरार्दनाः। गरुडो बलवानेष मम तुल्यः स्वतेजसा ॥१-२०-८॥
naitadevaṃ yathā yūyaṃ manyadhvamasurārdanāḥ। garuḍo balavāneṣa mama tulyaḥ svatejasā ॥1-20-8॥
[न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; एवम् (evam) - thus; यथा (yathā) - as; यूयम् (yūyam) - you; मन्यध्वम् (manyadhvam) - think; असुरार्दनाः (asurārdanāḥ) - O slayers of demons; गरुडः (garuḍaḥ) - Garuda; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; मम (mama) - my; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; स्वतेजसा (svatejasā) - in own splendor;]
(Not thus as you think, O slayers of demons. Garuda is strong, this one is equal to my own splendor.)

एवमुक्तास्ततो गत्वा गरुडं वाग्भिरस्तुवन्। अदूरादभ्युपेत्यैनं देवाः सर्षिगणास्तदा ॥१-२०-९॥
evamuktāstato gatvā garuḍaṃ vāgbhirastuvan। adūrādabhyupetyaainaṃ devāḥ sarṣigaṇāstadā ॥1-20-9॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - having been spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; गरुडम् (garuḍam) - Garuda; वाग्भिः (vāgbhiḥ) - with words; अस्तुवन् (astuvan) - praised; अदूरात् (adūrāt) - from a distance; अभ्युपेत्य (abhyupetya) - having approached; एनम् (enam) - him; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; सः (saḥ) - with; ऋषिगणाः (ṛṣigaṇāḥ) - the group of sages; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus having been spoken, then having gone, they praised Garuda with words. From a distance, having approached him, the gods with the group of sages then.)
After being addressed in this way, they went to Garuda and praised him with words. The gods, along with the group of sages, approached him from a distance at that time.
त्वमृषिस्त्वं महाभागस्त्वं देवः पतगेश्वरः। त्वं प्रभुस्तपनप्रख्यस्त्वं नस्त्राणमनुत्तमम् ॥१-२०-१०॥
tvam ṛṣis tvaṁ mahābhāgas tvaṁ devaḥ patageśvaraḥ। tvaṁ prabhus tapanaprakhyas tvaṁ nastrāṇamanuttamam ॥1-20-10॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; त्वम् (tvam) - you; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - greatly fortunate; त्वम् (tvam) - you; देवः (devaḥ) - god; पतगेश्वरः (patageśvaraḥ) - lord of birds; त्वम् (tvam) - you; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - master; तपनप्रख्यः (tapanaprakhyaḥ) - like the sun; त्वम् (tvam) - you; नः (naḥ) - our; त्राणम् (trāṇam) - protector; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed;]
(You are a sage, you are greatly fortunate, you are a god, lord of birds. You are the master, like the sun, you are our unsurpassed protector.)

बलोर्मिमान्साधुरदीनसत्त्वः; समृद्धिमान्दुष्प्रसहस्त्वमेव। तपः श्रुतं सर्वमहीनकीर्ते; अनागतं चोपगतं च सर्वम् ॥१-२०-११॥
balormimānsādhuradīnasattvaḥ; samṛddhimānduṣprasahastvameva। tapaḥ śrutaṃ sarvamahīnakīrte; anāgataṃ copagataṃ ca sarvam ॥1-20-11॥
[बलः (balaḥ) - strength; उर्मिमान् (urmimān) - wave-like; साधुः (sādhuḥ) - virtuous; अदीनसत्त्वः (adīnasattvaḥ) - undaunted spirit; समृद्धिमान् (samṛddhimān) - prosperous; दुष्प्रसहः (duṣprasahaḥ) - irresistible; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अहीनकीर्ते (ahīnakīrte) - unblemished fame; अनागतम् (anāgatam) - unborn; च (ca) - and; उपगतम् (upagatam) - approached; च (ca) - and; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all;]
(Strength is wave-like, virtuous, with undaunted spirit; prosperous, irresistible are you indeed. Austerity is heard, all with unblemished fame; unborn and approached and all.)
Your strength is like a wave, virtuous and with an undaunted spirit; you are indeed prosperous and irresistible. All austerities are heard with unblemished fame; everything, both unborn and approached, is included.
त्वमुत्तमः सर्वमिदं चराचरं; गभस्तिभिर्भानुरिवावभाससे। समाक्षिपन्भानुमतः प्रभां मुहु; स्त्वमन्तकः सर्वमिदं ध्रुवाध्रुवम् ॥१-२०-१२॥
tvam uttamaḥ sarvam idaṃ carācaraṃ; gabhastibhir bhānur ivāvabhāsase। samākṣipan bhānumataḥ prabhāṃ muhu; tvam antakaḥ sarvam idaṃ dhruvādhruvam ॥1-20-12॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; उत्तमः (uttamaḥ) - the best; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; इदम् (idam) - this; चराचरम् (carācaram) - moving and non-moving; गभस्तिभिः (gabhastibhiḥ) - with rays; भानुः (bhānuḥ) - the sun; इव (iva) - like; अवभाससे (avabhāsase) - you illuminate; समाक्षिपन् (samākṣipan) - enveloping; भानुमतः (bhānumataḥ) - of the sun; प्रभाम् (prabhām) - light; मुहुः (muhuḥ) - again and again; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अन्तकः (antakaḥ) - the end; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; इदम् (idam) - this; ध्रुवाध्रुवम् (dhruvādhruvam) - permanent and impermanent;]
(You are the best, illuminating all this moving and non-moving like the sun with rays, enveloping the light of the sun again and again; you are the end of all this permanent and impermanent.)
You are supreme, shining upon all that is movable and immovable like the sun with its rays, repeatedly enveloping the light of the sun; you are the end of all that is eternal and transient.
दिवाकरः परिकुपितो यथा दहे; त्प्रजास्तथा दहसि हुताशनप्रभ। भयङ्करः प्रलय इवाग्निरुत्थितो; विनाशयन्युगपरिवर्तनान्तकृत् ॥१-२०-१३॥
divākaraḥ parikupito yathā dahe; tprajāstathā dahasi hutāśanaprabha। bhayaṅkaraḥ pralaya ivāgnirutthito; vināśayanyugaparivartanāntakṛt ॥1-20-13॥
[दिवाकरः (divākaraḥ) - sun; परिकुपितः (parikupitaḥ) - angry; यथा (yathā) - as; दहेत् (dahet) - would burn; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; तथा (tathā) - so; दहसि (dahasi) - you burn; हुताशनप्रभ (hutāśanaprabha) - O fire-lord; भयङ्करः (bhayaṅkaraḥ) - terrifying; प्रलयः (pralayaḥ) - dissolution; इव (iva) - like; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; उत्थितः (utthitaḥ) - arisen; विनाशयन् (vināśayan) - destroying; युगपरिवर्तन (yugaparivartana) - era-change; अन्तकृत् (antakṛt) - end-maker;]
(The sun, angry, would burn creatures; so you burn, O fire-lord. Terrifying like the dissolution fire arisen, destroying, the era-change end-maker.)
The sun, when angry, would burn all creatures; similarly, you burn, O lord of fire. You are terrifying like the fire of dissolution, arisen to destroy and bring about the end of an era.
खगेश्वरं शरणमुपस्थिता वयं; महौजसं वितिमिरमभ्रगोचरम्। महाबलं गरुडमुपेत्य खेचरं; परावरं वरदमजय्यविक्रमम् ॥१-२०-१४॥
khageśvaraṃ śaraṇamupasthitā vayaṃ; mahaujasaṃ vitimiramabhragocaram. mahābalaṃ garuḍamupetya khecaraṃ; parāvaraṃ varadamajayyavikramam ॥1-20-14॥
[खगेश्वरं (khageśvaram) - lord of birds; शरणमुपस्थिता (śaraṇamupasthitā) - taken refuge; वयं (vayaṃ) - we; महौजसं (mahaujasaṃ) - mighty; वितिमिरम् (vitimiram) - dispeller of darkness; अभ्रगोचरम् (abhragocaram) - sky-roaming; महाबलं (mahābalam) - great strength; गरुडमुपेत्य (garuḍamupetya) - approaching Garuda; खेचरं (khecaram) - sky-traveller; परावरं (parāvaram) - all-knowing; वरदम (varadam) - bestower of boons; अजय्यविक्रमम् (ajayyavikramam) - invincible prowess;]
(We have taken refuge in the lord of birds, the mighty one, dispeller of darkness, sky-roaming, of great strength, approaching Garuda, the sky-traveller, all-knowing, bestower of boons, with invincible prowess.)
We seek refuge in Garuda, the mighty lord of birds, who dispels darkness and roams the skies. He is of great strength, all-knowing, bestower of boons, and possesses invincible prowess.
एवं स्तुतः सुपर्णस्तु देवैः सर्षिगणैस्तदा। तेजसः प्रतिसंहारमात्मनः स चकार ह ॥१-२०-१५॥
evaṃ stutaḥ suparṇastu devaiḥ sarṣigaṇaistadā। teJasaḥ pratisaṃhāramātmanaḥ sa cakāra ha ॥1-20-15॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; स्तुतः (stutaḥ) - praised; सुपर्णः (suparṇaḥ) - Suparna; तु (tu) - but; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; सर्षिगणैः (sarṣigaṇaiḥ) - with the groups of sages; तदा (tadā) - then; तेजसः (teJasaḥ) - of the energy; प्रतिसंहारम् (pratisaṃhāram) - withdrawal; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; स (sa) - he; चकार (cakāra) - did; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Thus praised, Suparna, but by the gods with the groups of sages, then, of the energy, withdrawal of himself, he did indeed.)
Thus praised by the gods and the groups of sages, Suparna then withdrew his energy.
