[वैशम्पायनः (vaiśampāyanaḥ) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;॥]
Vaiśampāyana said:
तांस्तु दृष्ट्वा सुमनसः परिसंवत्सरोषितान् । विश्वस्तानिव संलक्ष्य हर्षं चक्रे पुरोचनः ॥१-१३६-१॥
tāṁs tu dṛṣṭvā sumanasaḥ parisaṁvatsaroṣitān। viśvastān iva saṁlakṣya harṣaṁ cakre purocanaḥ ॥1॥
[तान् (tān) - them; तु (tu) - indeed; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सुमनसः (sumanasaḥ) - well-disposed; परिसंवत्सर-उषितान् (parisaṁvatsara-uṣitān) - dwelling for a full year;। विश्वस्तान् (viśvastān) - confident; इव (iva) - as if; संलक्ष्य (saṁlakṣya) - perceiving; हर्षम् (harṣam) - joy; चक्रे (cakre) - felt; पुरोचनः (purocanaḥ) - Purocana;॥१-१३६-१॥]
Seeing them well-settled and having lived there for a full year, Purocana, perceiving them as trusting, rejoiced.
पुरोचने तथा हृष्टे कौन्तेयोऽथ युधिष्ठिरः । भीमसेनार्जुनौ चैव यमौ चोवाच धर्मवित् ॥१-१३६-२॥
purocane tathā hṛṣṭe kaunteyo'tha yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bhīmasenārjunau caiva yamau covāca dharmavit ॥2॥
[पुरोचने (purocane) - as Purocana; तथा (tathā) - thus; हृष्टे (hṛṣṭe) - rejoiced; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kuntī; अथ (atha) - then; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;। भीमसेन-अर्जुनौ (bhīmasena-arjunau) - Bhīmasena and Arjuna; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; यमौ (yamau) - the twins; च (ca) - and; उवाच (uvāca) - said; धर्मवित् (dharmavit) - knower of dharma;॥१-१३६-२॥]
When Purocana thus rejoiced, Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī and knower of dharma, spoke to Bhīmasena, Arjuna, and the twins.
अस्मानयं सुविश्वस्तान्वेत्ति पापः पुरोचनः । वञ्चितोऽयं नृशंसात्मा कालं मन्ये पलायने ॥१-१३६-३॥
asmān ayaṁ suviśvastān vetti pāpaḥ purocanaḥ। vañcito'yaṁ nṛśaṁsātmā kālaṁ manye palāyane ॥3॥
[अस्मान् (asmān) - us; अयम् (ayam) - this; सुविश्वस्तान् (suviśvastān) - fully trusting; वेत्ति (vetti) - knows; पापः (pāpaḥ) - wicked; पुरोचनः (purocanaḥ) - Purocana;। वञ्चितः (vañcitaḥ) - deceived; अयम् (ayam) - this; नृशंसात्मा (nṛśaṁsātmā) - cruel-souled one; कालम् (kālam) - time; मन्ये (manye) - I consider; पलायने (palāyane) - for escape;॥१-१३६-३॥]
This wicked Purocana believes us to be fully trusting; I consider that we have deceived this cruel-souled one and that the time has come to escape.
आयुधागारमादीप्य दग्ध्वा चैव पुरोचनम् । षट्प्राणिनो निधायेह द्रवामोऽनभिलक्षिताः ॥१-१३६-४॥
āyudhāgāram ādīpya dagdhvā caiva purocanam। ṣaṭ-prāṇino nidhāyaiha dravāmo'nabhilakṣitāḥ ॥4॥
[आयुधागारम् (āyudhāgāram) - the armory; आधिप्य (ādīpya) - setting on fire; दग्ध्वा (dagdhvā) - having burned; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पुरोचनम् (purocanam) - Purocana;। षट्-प्राणिनः (ṣaṭ-prāṇinaḥ) - six living beings; निधाय (nidhāya) - placing; इह (iha) - here; द्रवामः (dravāmaḥ) - let us flee; अनभिलक्षिताः (anabhilakṣitāḥ) - unnoticed;॥१-१३६-४॥]
Let us set the armory on fire and burn Purocana too; placing six living beings here, let us flee unnoticed.
अथ दानापदेशेन कुन्ती ब्राह्मणभोजनम् । चक्रे निशि महद्राजन्नाजग्मुस्तत्र योषितः ॥१-१३६-५॥
atha dānāpadeśena kuntī brāhmaṇa-bhojanam। cakre niśi mahad rājan ājagmus tatra yoṣitaḥ ॥5॥
[अथ (atha) - then; दान-अपदेशेन (dāna-apadeśena) - under the pretext of alms; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; ब्राह्मण-भोजनम् (brāhmaṇa-bhojanam) - feast for Brāhmaṇas;। चक्रे (cakre) - arranged; निशि (niśi) - at night; महत् (mahat) - great; राजन् (rājan) - O king; आजग्मुः (ājagmuḥ) - came; तत्र (tatra) - there; योषितः (yoṣitaḥ) - women;॥१-१३६-५॥]
Then, under the pretext of a charitable feast, Kuntī arranged a great night meal for Brāhmaṇas; many women came there, O king.
ता विहृत्य यथाकामं भुक्त्वा पीत्वा च भारत । जग्मुर्निशि गृहानेव समनुज्ञाप्य माधवीम् ॥१-१३६-६॥
tā vihṛtya yathākāmaṁ bhuktvā pītvā ca bhārata। jagmur niśi gṛhān eva samanujñāpya mādhavīm ॥6॥
[ताः (tāḥ) - they; विहृत्य (vihṛtya) - having enjoyed; यथा-कामम् (yathā-kāmam) - as they desired; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having eaten; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;। जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; निशि (niśi) - at night; गृहान् (gṛhān) - to their homes; एव (eva) - indeed; समनुज्ञाप्य (samanujñāpya) - having taken leave; माधवीम् (mādhavīm) - the maid Madhavī;॥१-१३६-६॥]
O Bhārata, after enjoying as they pleased, eating and drinking, those women returned home at night after taking leave of Madhavī.
निषादी पञ्चपुत्रा तु तस्मिन्भोज्ये यदृच्छया । अन्नार्थिनी समभ्यागात्सपुत्रा कालचोदिता ॥१-१३६-७॥
niṣādī pañca-putrā tu tasmin bhojye yadṛcchayā। annārthinī samabhyāgāt sa-putrā kāla-coditā ॥7॥
[निषादी (niṣādī) - a Nishada woman; पञ्चपुत्रा (pañca-putrā) - with five sons; तु (tu) - indeed; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; भोज्ये (bhojye) - feast; यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - by chance;। अन्नार्थिनी (annārthinī) - seeking food; समभ्यागात् (samabhyāgāt) - arrived; सपुत्रा (sa-putrā) - with sons; कालचोदिता (kāla-coditā) - prompted by fate;॥१-१३६-७॥]
By chance, a Nishada woman with five sons, seeking food and prompted by fate, came to that feast.
सा पीत्वा मदिरां मत्ता सपुत्रा मदविह्वला । सह सर्वैः सुतै राजंस्तस्मिन्नेव निवेशने ॥ सुष्वाप विगतज्ञाना मृतकल्पा नराधिप ॥१-१३६-८॥
sā pītvā madirāṁ mattā sa-putrā mada-vihvalā। saha sarvaiḥ sutai rājan tasminn eva niveśane। suṣvāpa vigata-jñānā mṛta-kalpā narādhipa ॥8॥
[सा (sā) - she; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; मदिराम् (madirām) - wine; मत्ता (mattā) - intoxicated; सपुत्रा (sa-putrā) - with sons; मदविह्वला (mada-vihvalā) - overcome with drink;। सह (saha) - with; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; सुतैः (sutaiḥ) - sons; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; एव (eva) - very; निवेशने (niveśane) - residence;। सुष्वाप (suṣvāpa) - slept; विगतज्ञाना (vigata-jñānā) - unconscious; मृतकल्पा (mṛta-kalpā) - like dead; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O ruler of men;॥१-१३६-८॥]
Having drunk wine, the Nishada woman became intoxicated and overcome with drink, and along with all her sons, slept unconscious like the dead in that very house, O king.
अथ प्रवाते तुमुले निशि सुप्ते जने विभो । तदुपादीपयद्भीमः शेते यत्र पुरोचनः ॥१-१३६-९॥
atha pravāte tumule niśi supte jane vibho। tad upādīpayad bhīmaḥ śete yatra purocanaḥ ॥9॥
[अथ (atha) - then; प्रवाते (pravāte) - with strong wind; तुमुले (tumule) - in tumult; निशि (niśi) - at night; सुप्ते (supte) - sleeping; जने (jane) - people; विभो (vibho) - O lord;। तत् (tat) - that; उपादीपयत् (upādīpayat) - ignited; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; शेते (śete) - where he lay; यत्र (yatra) - where; पुरोचनः (purocanaḥ) - Purocana;॥१-१३६-९॥]
Then, at night, when all were asleep and the wind roared fiercely, Bhīma ignited the place where Purocana lay, O lord.
ततः प्रतापः सुमहाञ्शब्दश्चैव विभावसोः । प्रादुरासीत्तदा तेन बुबुधे स जनव्रजः ॥१-१३६-१०॥
tataḥ pratāpaḥ su-mahāñ śabdaś caiva vibhāvasoḥ। prādur āsīt tadā tena bubudhe sa janavrajaḥ ॥10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रतापः (pratāpaḥ) - great heat; सुमहान् (su-mahān) - very great; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विभावसोः (vibhāvasoḥ) - of the fire;। प्रादुरासीत् (prādurāsīt) - arose; तदा (tadā) - then; तेन (tena) - by that; बुबुधे (bubudhe) - became aware; सः (saḥ) - that; जनव्रजः (janavrajaḥ) - group of people;॥१-१३६-१०॥]
Then a great blaze and loud noise arose from the fire, and by that, the people became aware.
पौरा ऊचुः॥
paurā ūcuḥ॥
[पौराः (paurāḥ) - the citizens; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said;॥]
The citizens said:
दुर्योधनप्रयुक्तेन पापेनाकृतबुद्धिना । गृहमात्मविनाशाय कारितं दाहितं च यत् ॥१-१३६-११॥
duryodhana-prayuktena pāpenākṛtabuddhinā। gṛham ātma-vināśāya kāritaṁ dāhitaṁ ca yat ॥11॥
[दुर्योधन-प्रयुक्तेन (duryodhana-prayuktena) - instigated by Duryodhana; पापेन (pāpena) - by the wicked one; अकृतबुद्धिना (akṛta-buddhinā) - lacking good sense;। गृहम् (gṛham) - the house; आत्म-विनाशाय (ātma-vināśāya) - for self-destruction; कारितम् (kāritam) - was caused; दाहितम् (dāhitam) - was burned; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which;॥१-१३६-११॥]
The house which was built and burned by that wicked fool, instigated by Duryodhana, was intended for his own destruction.
अहो धिग्धृतराष्ट्रस्य बुद्धिर्नातिसमञ्जसी । यः शुचीन्पाण्डवान्बालान्दाहयामास मन्त्रिणा ॥१-१३६-१२॥
aho dhig dhṛtarāṣṭrasya buddhir nāti-samañjasī। yaḥ śucīn pāṇḍavān bālān dāhayāmāsa mantriṇā ॥12॥
[अहो (aho) - alas; धिक् (dhik) - shame; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - the intellect; नातिसमञ्जसी (nāti-samañjasī) - not very proper;। यः (yaḥ) - who; शुचीन् (śucīn) - pure; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; बालान् (bālān) - young; दाहयामास (dāhayāmāsa) - caused to be burned; मन्त्रिणा (mantriṇā) - through a minister;॥१-१३६-१२॥]
Alas, shame on Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s judgment, which was improper, for he caused the pure and young Pāṇḍavas to be burned by his minister.
दिष्ट्या त्विदानीं पापात्मा दग्धोऽयमतिदुर्मतिः । अनागसः सुविश्वस्तान्यो ददाह नरोत्तमान् ॥१-१३६-१३॥
diṣṭyā tv idānīṁ pāpātmā dagdho'yam ati-durmatiḥ। anāgasaḥ suviśvastān yo dadāha narottamān ॥13॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - fortunately; तु (tu) - indeed; इदानीम् (idānīm) - now; पापात्मा (pāpātmā) - the sinful soul; दग्धः (dagdhaḥ) - is burned; अयम् (ayam) - this; अतिदुर्मतिः (ati-durmatiḥ) - very evil-minded;। अनागसः (anāgasaḥ) - innocent; सुविश्वस्तान् (suviśvastān) - very trusting; यः (yaḥ) - who; ददाह (dadāha) - burned; नरोत्तमान् (narottamān) - best of men;॥१-१३६-१३॥]
Fortunately, this very evil-minded sinner is now burned, who burned the innocent and fully trusting best of men.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायनः (vaiśampāyanaḥ) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;॥]
Vaiśampāyana said:
एवं ते विलपन्ति स्म वारणावतका जनाः । परिवार्य गृहं तच्च तस्थू रात्रौ समन्ततः ॥१-१३६-१४॥
evaṁ te vilapanti sma vāraṇāvatakā janāḥ। parivārya gṛhaṁ tac ca tasthū rātrau samantataḥ ॥14॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; ते (te) - they; विलपन्ति (vilapanti) - lamented; स्म (sma) - indeed; वारणावतकाः (vāraṇāvatakāḥ) - the people of Vāraṇāvata; जनाः (janāḥ) - people;। परिवार्य (parivārya) - surrounding; गृहम् (gṛham) - the house; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; तस्थुः (tasthuḥ) - stood; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - all around;॥१-१३६-१४॥]
Thus the people of Vāraṇāvata lamented, and stood all around that house during the night.
पाण्डवाश्चापि ते राजन्मात्रा सह सुदुःखिताः । बिलेन तेन निर्गत्य जग्मुर्गूढमलक्षिताः ॥१-१३६-१५॥
pāṇḍavāś cāpi te rājan mātrā saha su-duḥkhitāḥ। bilena tena nirgatya jagmur gūḍham alakṣitāḥ ॥15॥
[पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ते (te) - they; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मात्रया (mātrayā) - with their mother; सह (saha) - along; सुदुःखिताः (su-duḥkhitāḥ) - very distressed;। बिलेन (bilena) - through the tunnel; तेन (tena) - that; निर्गत्य (nirgatya) - having exited; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; गूढम् (gūḍham) - secretly; अलक्षिताः (alakṣitāḥ) - unnoticed;॥१-१३६-१५॥]
And those Pāṇḍavas, O king, very distressed along with their mother, exited through the tunnel and departed secretly, unnoticed.
तेन निद्रोपरोधेन साध्वसेन च पाण्डवाः । न शेकुः सहसा गन्तुं सह मात्रा परन्तपाः ॥१-१३६-१६॥
tena nidroparodhena sādhvasena ca pāṇḍavāḥ। na śekuḥ sahasā gantuṁ saha mātrā parantapāḥ ॥16॥
[तेन (tena) - due to that; निद्रा-उपरोधेन (nidra-uparodhena) - interruption of sleep; साध्वसेन (sādhvasena) - and by fear; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas;। न (na) - not; शेकुः (śekuḥ) - were able; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; सह (saha) - with; मात्रा (mātrā) - the mother; परन्तपाः (parantapāḥ) - scorcher of foes;॥१-१३६-१६॥]
Due to interrupted sleep and fear, the Pāṇḍavas, scorcher of foes, could not suddenly proceed along with their mother.
भीमसेनस्तु राजेन्द्र भीमवेगपराक्रमः । जगाम भ्रातृनादाय सर्वान्मातरमेव च ॥१-१३६-१७॥
bhīmasenas tu rājendra bhīma-vega-parākramaḥ। jagāma bhrātṝn ādāya sarvān mātaram eva ca ॥17॥
[भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; तु (tu) - indeed; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; भीम-वेग-पराक्रमः (bhīma-vega-parākramaḥ) - of terrible speed and valor;। जगाम (jagāma) - went; भ्रातृन् (bhrātṝn) - the brothers; आदाय (ādāya) - taking along; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; मातरम् (mātaram) - the mother; एव (eva) - also; च (ca) - and;॥१-१३६-१७॥]
Then Bhīmasena, O king, of immense speed and valor, took along all his brothers and mother and departed.
स्कन्धमारोप्य जननीं यमावङ्केन वीर्यवान् । पार्थौ गृहीत्वा पाणिभ्यां भ्रातरौ सुमहाबलौ ॥१-१३६-१८॥
skandham āropya jananīṁ yamāv aṅkena vīryavān। pārthau gṛhītvā pāṇibhyāṁ bhrātarau su-mahābalau ॥18॥
[स्कन्धम् (skandham) - on the shoulder; आरोप्य (āropya) - placing; जननीम् (jananīm) - the mother; यमौ (yamau) - the twins; अङ्केन (aṅkena) - on the hip; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - the mighty one;। पार्थौ (pārthau) - the two sons of Pṛthā; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - taking; पाणिभ्यां (pāṇibhyām) - by the hands; भ्रातरौ (bhrātarau) - the two brothers; सुमहाबलौ (su-mahābalau) - of great strength;॥१-१३६-१८॥]
Placing his mother on his shoulder, the mighty one took the twins on his hip, and holding the other two strong brothers by hand, he carried them.
तरसा पादपान्भञ्जन्महीं पद्भ्यां विदारयन् । स जगामाशु तेजस्वी वातरंहा वृकोदरः ॥१-१३६-१९॥
tarasā pādapān bhañjan mahīṁ padbhyāṁ vidārayan। sa jagāmāśu tejasvī vāta-raṁhā vṛkodaraḥ ॥19॥
[तरसा (tarasā) - forcefully; पादपान् (pādapān) - trees; भञ्जन् (bhañjan) - breaking; महीम् (mahīm) - the ground; पद्भ्यām् (padbhyām) - with his feet; विदारयन् (vidārayan) - tearing apart;। सः (saḥ) - he; जगाम (jagāma) - went; आशु (āśu) - swiftly; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - radiant; वातरंहा (vāta-raṁhā) - wind-speed; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma);॥१-१३६-१९॥]
With force, Bhīma broke through trees and tore the earth with his feet; the radiant Vṛkodara advanced swiftly like the wind.
