Vaiśampāyana said:
अथ रात्र्यां व्यतीतायामशेषो नागरो जनः । तत्राजगाम त्वरितो दिदृक्षुः पाण्डुनन्दनान् ॥१-१३७-१॥
atha rātryāṁ vyatītāyām aśeṣo nāgaro janaḥ। tatrājagāma tvarito didṛkṣuḥ pāṇḍunandanān ॥1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; रात्र्याम् (rātryām) - at night; व्यतीतायाम् (vyatītāyām) - having passed; अशेषः (aśeṣaḥ) - entire; नागरः (nāgaraḥ) - of the city; जनः (janaḥ) - people; तत्र (tatra) - there; आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - hurried; दिदृक्षुः (didṛkṣuḥ) - desirous to see; पाण्डुनन्दनान् (pāṇḍunandanān) - the sons of Pāṇḍu;]
Then, when the night had passed, all the people of the city hurried there, desiring to see the sons of Pāṇḍu.
निर्वापयन्तो ज्वलनं ते जना ददृशुस्ततः । जातुषं तद्गृहं दग्धममात्यं च पुरोचनम् ॥१-१३७-२॥
nirvāpayanto jvalanaṁ te janā dadṛśus tataḥ। jātuṣaṁ tadgṛhaṁ dagdham amātyaṁ ca purocanam ॥2॥
[निर्वापयन्तः (nirvāpayantaḥ) - extinguishing; ज्वलनम् (jvalanam) - the fire; ते (te) - those; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; ततः (tataḥ) - then; जातुषम् (jātuṣam) - of lac; तत् (tat) - that; गृहम् (gṛham) - house; दग्धम् (dagdham) - burnt; अमात्यम् (amātyam) - minister; च (ca) - and; पुरोचनम् (purocanam) - Purocana;]
While extinguishing the fire, the people then saw the lac house burnt down and the minister Purocana as well.
नूनं दुर्योधनेनेदं विहितं पापकर्मणा । पाण्डवानां विनाशाय इत्येवं चुक्रुषुर्जनाः ॥१-१३७-३॥
nūnaṁ duryodhanenedaṁ vihitaṁ pāpakarmaṇā। pāṇḍavānāṁ vināśāya ityevaṁ cukruṣur janāḥ ॥3॥
[नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; दुर्योधनेन (duryodhanena) - by Duryodhana; इदम् (idam) - this; विहितम् (vihitam) - arranged; पापकर्मणा (pāpakarmaṇā) - wicked-hearted; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; विनाशाय (vināśāya) - for destruction; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; चुक्रुषुः (cukruṣuḥ) - cried out; जनाः (janāḥ) - the people;]
Surely, this was arranged by the wicked Duryodhana for the destruction of the Pāṇḍavas — thus cried out the people.
विदिते धृतराष्ट्रस्य धार्तराष्ट्रो न संशयः । दग्धवान्पाण्डुदायादान्न ह्येनं प्रतिषिद्धवान् ॥१-१३७-४॥
vidite dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dhārtarāṣṭro na saṁśayaḥ। dagdhavān pāṇḍudāyādān na hy enaṁ pratiṣiddhavān ॥4॥
[विदिते (vidite) - having been known; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - to Dhṛtarāṣṭra; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - his son; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; दग्धवान् (dagdhavān) - burnt; पाण्डुदायादान् (pāṇḍudāyādān) - the heirs of Pāṇḍu; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; एनम् (enam) - him; प्रतिषिद्धवान् (pratiṣiddhavān) - restrained;]
When Dhṛtarāṣṭra knew it, there is no doubt — his son had burned the heirs of Pāṇḍu, and he had not restrained him.
नूनं शान्तनवो भीष्मो न धर्ममनुवर्तते । द्रोणश्च विदुरश्चैव कृपश्चान्ये च कौरवाः ॥१-१३७-५॥
nūnaṁ śāntanavo bhīṣmo na dharmam anuvartate। droṇaś ca viduraś caiva kṛpaś cānye ca kauravāḥ ॥5॥
[नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - Bhīṣma; न (na) - does not; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; अनुवर्तते (anuvartate) - follow; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; च (ca) - and; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - also; कौरवाः (kauravāḥ) - the Kauravas;]
Surely Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, does not follow righteousness, nor do Droṇa, Vidura, Kṛpa, and the other Kauravas.
ते वयं धृतराष्ट्रस्य प्रेषयामो दुरात्मनः । संवृत्तस्ते परः कामः पाण्डवान्दग्धवानसि ॥१-१३७-६॥
te vayaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya preṣayāmo durātmanaḥ। saṁvṛttas te paraḥ kāmaḥ pāṇḍavān dagdhavān asi ॥6॥
[ते (te) - we; वयम् (vayam) - we; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; प्रेषयामः (preṣayāmaḥ) - are sent; दुरात्मनः (durātmanaḥ) - of the evil-minded; संवृत्तः (saṁvṛttaḥ) - fulfilled; ते (te) - your; परः (paraḥ) - supreme; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; दग्धवान् (dagdhavān) - you have burnt; असि (asi) - you are;]
We are agents of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the evil-minded one. Your supreme desire is fulfilled — you have burnt the Pāṇḍavas.
ततो व्यपोहमानास्ते पाण्डवार्थे हुताशनम् । निषादीं ददृशुर्दग्धां पञ्चपुत्रामनागसम् ॥१-१३७-७॥
tato vyapohamānās te pāṇḍvārthe hutāśanam। niṣādīṁ dadṛśur dagdhāṁ pañcaputrām anāgasam ॥7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; व्यपोहमानाः (vyapohamānāḥ) - pushing away; ते (te) - they; पाण्डव-अर्थे (pāṇḍava-arthe) - for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas; हुताशनम् (hutāśanam) - fire; निषादीम् (niṣādīm) - the Niṣāda woman; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; दग्धाम् (dagdhām) - burnt; पञ्चपुत्राम् (pañcaputrām) - having five sons; अनागसम् (anāgasam) - innocent;]
Then, while clearing the fire for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas, they saw the Niṣāda woman, burnt, with her five innocent sons.
खनकेन तु तेनैव वेश्म शोधयता बिलम् । पांसुभिः प्रत्यपिहितं पुरुषैस्तैरलक्षितम् ॥१-१३७-८॥
khanakena tu tenaiva veśma śodhayatā bilam। pāṁsubhiḥ pratyapihitaṁ puruṣais tair alakṣitam ॥8॥
[खनकेन (khanakena) - by the digger; तु (tu) - indeed; तेन (tena) - by that same; एव (eva) - only; वेश्म (veśma) - house; शोधयता (śodhayatā) - while cleansing; बिलम् (bilam) - tunnel; पांसुभिः (pāṁsubhiḥ) - with earth; प्रत्यपिहितम् (pratyapihitam) - covered; पुरुषैः (puruṣaiḥ) - by the men; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; अलक्षितम् (alakṣitam) - unnoticed;]
While cleansing the house, the same digger had covered the tunnel with earth, and it remained unnoticed by those men.
ततस्ते प्रेषयामासुर्धृतराष्ट्रस्य नागराः । पाण्डवानग्निना दग्धानमात्यं च पुरोचनम् ॥१-१३७-९॥
tatas te preṣayāmāsur dhṛtarāṣṭrasya nāgarāḥ। pāṇḍavān agninā dagdhān amātyaṁ ca purocanam ॥9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; प्रेषयामासुः (preṣayāmāsuḥ) - sent word; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - to Dhṛtarāṣṭra; नागराः (nāgarāḥ) - the townspeople; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; अग्निना (agninā) - by fire; दग्धान् (dagdhān) - burnt; अमात्यम् (amātyam) - minister; च (ca) - and; पुरोचनम् (purocanam) - Purocana;]
Then the townspeople sent word to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the Pāṇḍavas had been burnt by fire, along with the minister Purocana.
श्रुत्वा तु धृतराष्ट्रस्तद्राजा सुमहदप्रियम् । विनाशं पाण्डुपुत्राणां विललाप सुदुःखितः ॥१-१३७-१०॥
śrutvā tu dhṛtarāṣṭras tad rājā sumahad apriyam। vināśaṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ ॥10॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - indeed; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; तत् (tat) - that; राजा (rājā) - king; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; अप्रियम् (apriyam) - unpleasant; विनाशम् (vināśam) - destruction; पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् (pāṇḍuputrāṇām) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; विललाप (vilalāpa) - lamented; सुदुःखितः (suduḥkhitaḥ) - greatly distressed;]
Having heard that very grievous news, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra greatly lamented the destruction of the sons of Pāṇḍu in deep sorrow.
अद्य पाण्डुर्मृतो राजा भ्राता मम सुदुर्लभः । तेषु वीरेषु दग्धेषु मात्रा सह विशेषतः ॥१-१३७-११॥
adya pāṇḍur mṛto rājā bhrātā mama sudurlabhaḥ। teṣu vīreṣu dagdheṣu mātrā saha viśeṣataḥ ॥11॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; पाण्डुः (pāṇḍuḥ) - Pāṇḍu; मृतः (mṛtaḥ) - dead; राजा (rājā) - king; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; मम (mama) - my; सुदुर्लभः (sudurlabhaḥ) - very rare; तेषु (teṣu) - among those; वीरेषु (vīreṣu) - heroes; दग्धेषु (dagdheṣu) - having been burned; मात्रा (mātrā) - with the mother; सह (saha) - along; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
Today King Pāṇḍu, my rare brother, is dead — especially with those heroes burned along with their mother.
गच्छन्तु पुरुषाः शीघ्रं नगरं वारणावतम् । सत्कारयन्तु तान्वीरान्कुन्तिराजसुतां च ताम् ॥१-१३७-१२॥
gacchantu puruṣāḥ śīghraṁ nagaraṁ vāraṇāvatam। satkārayantu tān vīrān kuntirājasutāṁ ca tām ॥12॥
[गच्छन्तु (gacchantu) - let go; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; नगरम् (nagaram) - city; वारणावतम् (vāraṇāvatam) - Vāraṇāvata; सत्कारयन्तु (satkārayantu) - let them honor; तान् (tān) - those; वीरान् (vīrān) - heroes; कुन्तिराजसुताम् (kuntirājasutām) - daughter of Kuntirāja; च (ca) - and; ताम् (tām) - her;]
Let men go quickly to the city of Vāraṇāvata and honor those heroes and her, the daughter of Kuntirāja.
कारयन्तु च कुल्यानि शुभ्राणि च महान्ति च । ये च तत्र मृतास्तेषां सुहृदोऽर्चन्तु तानपि ॥१-१३७-१३॥
kārayantu ca kulyāni śubhrāṇi ca mahānti ca। ye ca tatra mṛtās teṣāṁ suhṛdo'rcantu tān api ॥13॥
[कारयन्तु (kārayantu) - let them perform; च (ca) - and; कुल्यानि (kulyāni) - funerals; शुभ्राणि (śubhrāṇi) - pure; महान्ति (mahānti) - great; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; तत्र (tatra) - there; मृताः (mṛtāḥ) - are dead; तेषाम् (teṣām) - their; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; अर्चन्तु (arcantu) - let them honor; तान् (tān) - them; अपि (api) - also;]
Let pure and great funeral rites be performed, and let the friends of those who died there also be honored.
एवङ्गते मया शक्यं यद्यत्कारयितुं हितम् । पाण्डवानां च कुन्त्याश्च तत्सर्वं क्रियतां धनैः ॥१-१३७-१४॥
evaṁgate mayā śakyaṁ yadyat kārayituṁ hitam। pāṇḍavānāṁ ca kuntyāś ca tat sarvaṁ kriyatāṁ dhanaiḥ ॥14॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; गते (gate) - having happened; मया (mayā) - by me; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; यद्यत् (yadyat) - whatever; कारयितुम् (kārayitum) - to be done; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; कुन्त्याः (kuntyāḥ) - of Kuntī; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; धनैः (dhanaiḥ) - with wealth;]
In this situation, let whatever beneficial acts are possible for me to do for the Pāṇḍavas and for Kuntī — let all that be done with wealth.
एवमुक्त्वा ततश्चक्रे ज्ञातिभिः परिवारितः । उदकं पाण्डुपुत्राणां धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः ॥१-१३७-१५॥
evam uktvā tataś cakre jñātibhiḥ parivāritaḥ। udakaṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ dhṛtarāṣṭro’mbikāsutaḥ ॥15॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; चक्रे (cakre) - performed; ज्ञातिभिः (jñātibhiḥ) - with relatives; परिवारितः (parivāritaḥ) - surrounded; उदकम् (udakam) - water libation; पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् (pāṇḍuputrāṇām) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; अम्बिकासुतः (ambikāsutaḥ) - son of Ambikā;]
Thus having spoken, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, son of Ambikā, surrounded by his relatives, performed water-libation for the sons of Pāṇḍu.
चुक्रुशुः कौरवाः सर्वे भृशं शोकपरायणाः । विदुरस्त्वल्पशश्चक्रे शोकं वेद परं हि सः ॥१-१३७-१६॥
cukruśuḥ kauravāḥ sarve bhṛśaṁ śokaparāyaṇāḥ। viduras tv alpaśaś cakre śokaṁ veda paraṁ hi saḥ ॥16॥
[चुक्रुशुः (cukruśuḥ) - wailed; कौरवाः (kauravāḥ) - the Kauravas; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - intensely; शोकपरायणाः (śokaparāyaṇāḥ) - absorbed in grief; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; तु (tu) - but; अल्पशः (alpaśaḥ) - slightly; चक्रे (cakre) - expressed; शोकम् (śokam) - grief; वेद (veda) - knows; परम् (param) - supreme; हि (hi) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he;]
All the Kauravas wailed intensely, absorbed in grief, but Vidura expressed only slight sorrow — for he indeed knew the supreme truth.
पाण्डवाश्चापि निर्गत्य नगराद्वारणावतात् । जवेन प्रययू राजन्दक्षिणां दिशमाश्रिताः ॥१-१३७-१७॥
pāṇḍavāś cāpi nirgatya nagarād vāraṇāvatāt। javena prayayū rājan dakṣiṇāṁ diśam āśritāḥ ॥17॥
[पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; निर्गत्य (nirgatya) - having departed; नगरात् (nagarāt) - from the city; वारणावतात् (vāraṇāvatāt) - of Vāraṇāvata; जवेन (javena) - with speed; प्रययुः (prayayūḥ) - they went; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - southern; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; आश्रिताः (āśritāḥ) - having taken refuge in;]
The Pāṇḍavas, having departed from the city of Vāraṇāvata, went swiftly, O King, taking refuge in the southern direction.
विज्ञाय निशि पन्थानं नक्षत्रैर्दक्षिणामुखाः । यतमाना वनं राजन्गहनं प्रतिपेदिरे ॥१-१३७-१८॥
vijñāya niśi panthānaṁ nakṣatrair dakṣiṇāmukhāḥ। yatamānā vanaṁ rājan gahanaṁ pratipedire ॥18॥
[विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having discerned; निशि (niśi) - at night; पन्थानम् (panthānam) - path; नक्षत्रैः (nakṣatraiḥ) - by stars; दक्षिणामुखाः (dakṣiṇāmukhāḥ) - facing south; यतमानाः (yatamānāḥ) - striving; वनम् (vanam) - forest; राजन् (rājan) - O king; गहनम् (gahanam) - dense; प्रतिपेदिरे (pratipedire) - they entered;]
Facing south and discerning the path by stars at night, they strove and entered a dense forest, O King.
ततः श्रान्ताः पिपासार्ता निद्रान्धाः पाण्डुनन्दनाः । पुनरूचुर्महावीर्यं भीमसेनमिदं वचः ॥१-१३७-१९॥
tataḥ śrāntāḥ pipāsārtā nidrāndhāḥ pāṇḍunandanāḥ। punar ūcur mahāvīryaṁ bhīmasenam idaṁ vacaḥ ॥19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; श्रान्ताः (śrāntāḥ) - exhausted; पिपासार्ताः (pipāsārtāḥ) - tormented by thirst; निद्रान्धाः (nidrāndhāḥ) - blinded by sleep; पाण्डुनन्दनाः (pāṇḍunandanāḥ) - sons of Pāṇḍu; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; महावीर्यम् (mahāvīryam) - of great strength; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - to Bhīmasena; इदम् (idam) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - words;]
Then the sons of Pāṇḍu, exhausted, thirsty, and drowsy, again spoke these words to mighty Bhīmasena.
इतः कष्टतरं किं नु यद्वयं गहने वने । दिशश्च न प्रजानीमो गन्तुं चैव न शक्नुमः ॥१-१३७-२०॥
itaḥ kaṣṭataraṁ kiṁ nu yad vayaṁ gahane vane। diśaś ca na prajānīmo gantuṁ caiva na śaknumaḥ ॥20॥
[इतः (itaḥ) - than this; कष्टतरम् (kaṣṭataram) - more difficult; किम् (kim) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; यत् (yat) - that; वयम् (vayam) - we; गहने (gahane) - in the dense; वने (vane) - forest; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; प्रजानीमः (prajānīmaḥ) - we know; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; न (na) - not; शक्नुमः (śaknumaḥ) - we are able;]
What is more difficult than this — that we are in a dense forest, we do not know the directions, and we are unable to go on?
तं च पापं न जानीमो यदि दग्धः पुरोचनः । कथं नु विप्रमुच्येम भयादस्मादलक्षिताः ॥१-१३७-२१॥
taṁ ca pāpaṁ na jānīmo yadi dagdhaḥ purocanaḥ। kathaṁ nu vipramucyema bhayād asmād alakṣitāḥ ॥21॥
[तम् (tam) - that; च (ca) - and; पापम् (pāpam) - sinner; न (na) - not; जानीमः (jānīmaḥ) - we know; यदि (yadi) - if; दग्धः (dagdhaḥ) - burned; पुरोचनः (purocanaḥ) - Purocana; कथम् (katham) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; विप्रमुच्येम (vipramucyema) - shall we escape; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; अस्मात् (asmāt) - this; अलक्षिताः (alakṣitāḥ) - unnoticed;]
And we do not know whether that sinner Purocana is burned. How shall we escape unnoticed from this fear?
पुनरस्मानुपादाय तथैव व्रज भारत । त्वं हि नो बलवानेको यथा सततगस्तथा ॥१-१३७-२२॥
punar asmān upādāya tathaiva vraja bhārata। tvaṁ hi no balavān eko yathā satatagas tathā ॥22॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; उपादाय (upādāya) - carrying; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; व्रज (vraja) - go; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; त्वम् (tvam) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - for us; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; यथा (yathā) - as; सततगः (satatagaḥ) - tireless mover; तथा (tathā) - so;]
Carry us again and go forth just as before, O Bhārata. You alone are strong for us and tireless in movement.
इत्युक्तो धर्मराजेन भीमसेनो महाबलः । आदाय कुन्तीं भ्रातृंश्च जगामाशु महाबलः ॥१-१३७-२३॥
ity ukto dharmarājena bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ। ādāya kuntīṁ bhrātṛṁś ca jagāmāśu mahābalaḥ ॥23॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; धर्मराजेन (dharmarājena) - by Dharmarāja; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; कुन्तीम् (kuntīm) - Kuntī; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; च (ca) - and; जगाम (jagāma) - went; आशु (āśu) - swiftly; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - mighty one;]
Thus addressed by Dharmarāja, mighty Bhīmasena took Kuntī and his brothers and swiftly went forth, the mighty one.
