brāhmaṇa uvāca॥
The Brahmin said:
gaṅgādvāraṃ prati mahānbabhūvarṣirmahātapāḥ । bharadvājo mahāprājñaḥ satataṃ saṃśitavrataḥ ॥1-154-1॥
Towards Gangadwara, the great sage Bharadvaja, who was greatly wise and firm in his vows, always engaged in great penance.
so'bhiṣektuḿ gato gaṅgāṁ pūrvamevāgatāṁ satīm | dadarśāpsarasaṁ tatra ghṛtācīmāplutāmṛṣiḥ ||1-154-2||
He went to the Ganges to consecrate, where he saw the apsara Ghritachi immersed there, the chaste one who had arrived before.
tasyā vāyurnadītīre vasanaṃ vyaharattadā । apakṛṣṭāmbarāṃ dṛṣṭvā tāmṛṣicakame tataḥ ॥1-154-3॥
The wind carried away her clothing on the riverbank. Seeing her with disheveled garments, the sage desired her thereafter.
tasyāṃ saṃsaktamanasaḥ kaumārabrahmacāriṇaḥ । hṛṣṭasya retaścaskanda tadṛṣirdroṇa ādadhe ॥1-154-4॥
In her, the mind of the youthful celibate became attached; the delighted sage Drona accepted the spilled semen.
tataḥ samabhavaddroṇaḥ kumārastasya dhīmataḥ । adhyagīṣṭa sa vedāṃśca vedāṅgāni ca sarvaśaḥ ॥1-154-5॥
Then, the wise boy Droṇa was born. He studied the Vedas and Vedangas completely.
bharadvājasya tu sakhā pṛṣato nāma pārthivaḥ । tasyāpi drupado nāma tadā samabhavatsutaḥ ॥1-154-6॥
Bharadvaja's friend was a king named Prishata. His son, named Drupada, was born then.
sa nityam āśramaṃ gatvā droṇena saha pārṣataḥ । cikrīḍādhyayanaṃ caiva cakāra kṣatriyarṣabhaḥ ॥1-154-7॥
He always went to the hermitage and, together with Droṇa, the son of Pṛṣata, the best among the warriors, played and studied.
tatastu pṛṣate'tīte sa rājā drupado'bhavat । droṇo'pi rāmaṃ śuśrāva ditsantaṃ vasu sarvaśaḥ ॥1-154-8॥
Then, after Pṛṣata had passed away, he became King Drupada. Droṇa also heard of Rāma giving wealth in all ways.
vanaṃ tu prasthitaṃ rāmaṃ bharadvājasuto'bravīt । āgataṃ vittakāmaṃ māṃ viddhi droṇaṃ dvijarṣabha ॥1-154-9॥
But when Rama had departed to the forest, the son of Bharadvaja said, 'Know me as Drona, the best of the twice-born, who has come desiring wealth.'
rāma uvāca॥
Rama said:
śarīramātramevādyamayedamavaśeṣitam । astrāṇi vā śarīraṃ vā brahmannanyataraṃ vṛṇu ॥1-154-10॥
Today, only the body is left by me. O Brahman, choose either the weapons or the body.
droṇa uvāca॥
Droṇa said:
astrāṇi caiva sarvāṇi teṣāṃ saṃhārameva ca । prayogaṃ caiva sarveṣāṃ dātumarhati me bhavān ॥1-154-11॥
You are indeed worthy to give me all the weapons, their destruction, and the use of all.
brāhmaṇa uvāca॥
The Brahmin said:
tathetyuktvā tatastasmai pradadau bhṛgunandanaḥ । pratigṛhya tato droṇaḥ kṛtakṛtyo'bhavattadā ॥1-154-12॥
Thus having spoken, the son of Bhrigu gave it to him. Having received it, Drona then became accomplished in his task.
samprahṛṣṭamanāścāpi rāmātparamasaṁmatam । brahmāstraṁ samanuprāpya nareṣvabhyadhiko'bhavat ॥1-154-13॥
With a delighted mind and also supremely approved by Rāma, having obtained the Brahmāstra weapon, he became superior among men.
tato drupadam āsādya bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān । abravīt puruṣavyāghraḥ sakhāyaṃ viddhi mām iti ॥1-154-14॥
Then, having approached Drupada, the powerful Bharadvaja, a tiger among men, said, "Know me as your friend."
drupada uvāca॥
Drupada said:
nāśrotriyaḥ śrotriyasya nārathī rathinaḥ sakhā । nārājā pārthivasyāpi sakhipūrvaṃ kimiṣyate ॥1-154-15॥
A person who is not learned in the Vedas is not a friend of one who is learned in the Vedas; a person who is not a charioteer is not a friend of a charioteer; a person who is not a king is not even a friend of a prince. What is desired before friendship?
brāhmaṇa uvāca॥
The Brahmin said:
sa viniścitya manasā pāñcālyaṃ prati buddhimān । jagāma kurumukhyānāṃ nagaraṃ nāgasāhvayam ॥1-154-16॥
He, having decided in mind, wisely went towards the son of Pāñcāla to the city of Nāgasāhvaya of the chief Kurus.
tasmai pautrānsamādāya vasūni vividhāni ca । prāptāya pradadau bhīṣmaḥ śiṣyāndroṇāya dhīmate ॥1-154-17॥
Bhishma, having gathered his grandsons and various kinds of wealth, gave them to the wise Drona who had arrived.
droṇaḥ śiṣyāṁstataḥ sarvānidaṁ vacanamabravīt । samānīya tadā vidvāndrupadasyāsukhāya vai ॥1-154-18॥
Droṇa then said this speech to all his disciples, having gathered them, for the discomfort of Drupada, indeed.
ācāryavetanaṃ kiñciddhṛdi samparivartate । kṛtāstraistatpradeyaṃ syāttadṛtaṃ vadatānaghāḥ ॥1-154-19॥
The teacher's fee revolves a little in the heart; it should be given by those skilled in weapons, that is the truth, speak it, O sinless ones.
yadā ca pāṇḍavāḥ sarve kṛtāstrāḥ kṛtaniśramāḥ । tato droṇo'bravīdbhūyo vetanārthamidaṃ vacaḥ ॥1-154-20॥
When all the Pāṇḍavas were trained in weapons and had completed their training, then Droṇa said this speech again for the sake of salary.
pārṣato drupado nāma chatravatyaṃ nareśvaraḥ । tasyāpakṛṣya tadrājyaṃ mama śīghraṃ pradīyatām ॥1-154-21॥
The kingdom of Drupada, the son of Pṛṣata, named in Chatravati, should be quickly given to me after taking it away from him.
tataḥ pāṇḍusutāḥ pañca nirjitya drupadaṃ yudhi । droṇāya darśayāmāsurbaddhvā sasacivaṃ tadā ॥1-154-22॥
Then the five sons of Pandu, having conquered Drupada in battle, showed him to Drona, having bound him with his ministers.
droṇa uvāca॥
Droṇa said:
prārthayāmi tvayā sakhyaṃ punareva narādhipa । arājā kila no rājñaḥ sakhā bhavitumarhati ॥1-154-23॥
I request friendship with you again, O king. Indeed, a non-king does not deserve to become a friend of a king.
ataḥ prayatitaṃ rājye yajñasena mayā tava । rājāsi dakṣiṇe kūle bhāgīrathyāhamuttare ॥1-154-24॥
Therefore, Yajnasena, I have endeavored in your kingdom. You are the king on the southern bank of the Ganges, and I am on the northern.
brāhmaṇa uvāca॥
The Brahmin said:
asatkāraḥ sa sumahān muhūrtamapi tasya tu । na vyeti hṛdayādrājño durmanāḥ sa kṛśo'bhavat ॥1-154-25॥
The disrespect was very great, but even for a moment, it did not depart from the heart of the king. He became dejected and emaciated.
