kāraṇaṃ brūhi gandharva kiṃ tadyena sma dharṣitāḥ। yānto brahmavidaḥ santaḥ sarve rātrāvariṃdama ॥1-159-1॥
[कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; reason; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; tell; गन्धर्व (gandharva) - O Gandharva; किम् (kim) - what; तत् (tat) - that; येन (yena) - by which; स्म (sma) - indeed; truly; धर्षिताः (dharṣitāḥ) - affronted; violated; यान्तः (yāntaḥ) - going; departing; ब्रह्मविदः (brahmavidaḥ) - knowers of Brahman; सन्तः (santaḥ) - good; virtuous; सर्वे (sarve) - all; रात्रा (rātrā) - night; वरिंदम (variṃdama) - O subduer of enemies;]
(O Gandharva, speak the cause, what is that by which indeed (they) were affronted? All the virtuous knowers of Brahman, O subduer of enemies, were departing at night.)
O Gandharva, tell me the reason—what is it by which they were truly affronted? All the virtuous Brahman-knowers, O subduer of enemies, were leaving at night.

अनग्नयोऽनाहुतयो न च विप्रपुरस्कृताः। यूयं ततो धर्षिताः स्थ मया पाण्डवनन्दन ॥१-१५९-२॥
anagnayo'nāhutayo na ca viprapuraskṛtāḥ। yūyaṃ tato dharṣitāḥ stha mayā pāṇḍavanandana॥1-159-2॥

(Without fire, without oblations, not led by Brāhmaṇas, you therefore are overpowered by me, O delight of the Pāṇḍavas.)

यक्षराक्षसगन्धर्वाः पिशाचोरगमानवाः। विस्तरं कुरुवंशस्य श्रीमतः कथयन्ति ते ॥१-१५९-३॥
yakṣa-rākṣasa-gandharvāḥ piśāca-uraga-mānavāḥ। vistaraṃ kuru-vaṃśasya śrīmataḥ kathayanti te ॥1-159-3॥

स्वयं चापि मया दृष्टश्चरता सागराम्बराम्। इमां वसुमतीं कृत्स्नां प्रभावः स्वकुलस्य ते ॥१-१५९-५॥
svayaṃ cāpi mayā dṛṣṭaś caratā sāgarāmbarām। imāṃ vasumatīṃ kṛtsnāṃ prabhāvaḥ svakulasya te ॥1-159-5॥

वेदे धनुषि चाचार्यमभिजानामि तेऽर्जुन। विश्रुतं त्रिषु लोकेषु भारद्वाजं यशस्विनम् ॥१-१५९-६॥

धर्मं वायुं च शक्रं च विजानाम्यश्विनौ तथा। पाण्डुं च कुरुशार्दूल षडेतान्कुलवर्धनान् ॥ पितृनेतानहं पार्थ देवमानुषसत्तमान् ॥१-१५९-७॥

उत्तमां तु मनोबुद्धिं भवतां भावितात्मनाम्। जानन्नपि च वः पार्थ कृतवानिह धर्षणाम् ॥१-१५९-९॥
uttamāṃ tu manobuddhiṃ bhavatāṃ bhāvitātmanām। jānannapi ca vaḥ pārtha kṛtavāniha dharṣaṇām ॥1-159-9॥

(But knowing the excellent mind and intellect of you, whose souls are cultivated, even so, O Partha, he has done insult here.)

स्त्रीसकाशे च कौरव्य न पुमान्क्षन्तुमर्हति। धर्षणामात्मनः पश्यन्बाहुद्रविणमाश्रितः ॥१-१५९-१०॥
strīsakāśe ca kauravya na pumānkṣantumarhati। dharṣaṇāmātmanaḥ paśyanbāhudraviṇamāśritaḥ ॥1-159-10॥
[स्त्रीसकाशे (strīsakāśe) - in the presence of a woman; च (ca) - and; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; न (na) - not; पुमान् (pumān) - a man; क्षन्तुम् (kṣantum) - to forgive; अर्हति (arhati) - is fit; धर्षणाम् (dharṣaṇām) - insult; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; बाहुद्रविणम् (bāhudraviṇam) - strength of arms; आश्रितः (āśritaḥ) - depending upon;]
(In the presence of a woman, O Kauravya, a man is not fit to forgive an insult to himself, seeing (that he is) depending upon the strength of his arms.)

नक्तं च बलमस्माकं भूय एवाभिवर्धते। यतस्ततो मां कौन्तेय सदारं मन्युराविशत् ॥१-१५९-११॥
naktaṃ ca balamasmākaṃ bhūya evābhivardhate। yatastato māṃ kaunteya sadāraṃ manyurāviśat ॥1-159-11॥

(At night and our strength indeed increases more; because therefore me, O son of Kunti, with wife, anger enters.)

सोऽहं त्वयेह विजितः सङ्ख्ये तापत्यवर्धन। येन तेनेह विधिना कीर्त्यमानं निबोध मे ॥१-१५९-१२॥
so'ham tvayeha vijitaḥ saṅkhye tāpatyavardhana. yena teneha vidhinā kīrtyamānaṃ nibodha me ॥1-159-12॥

ब्रह्मचर्यं परो धर्मः स चापि नियतस्त्वयि। यस्मात्तस्मादहं पार्थ रणेऽस्मिन्विजितस्त्वया ॥१-१५९-१३॥
brahmacaryaṃ paro dharmaḥ sa cāpi niyatastvayi। yasmāttasmādahaṃ pārtha raṇe'sminvijitastvayā ॥1-159-13॥
[ब्रह्मचर्यं (brahmacaryam) - discipline of celibacy; परः (paraḥ) - supreme; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; नियतः (niyataḥ) - restrained; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अहम् (aham) - I; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; विजितः (vijitaḥ) - conquered; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Discipline of celibacy is the supreme duty; he also is restrained in you. Because of that, therefore, I, O Pārtha, in this battle, am conquered by you.)
Brahmacarya is the highest duty, and you have perfectly observed it. Therefore, O Pārtha, in this battle, I have been conquered by you.
यस्तु स्यात्क्षत्रियः कश्चित्कामवृत्तः परन्तप। नक्तं च युधि युध्येत न स जीवेत्कथञ्चन ॥१-१५९-१४॥
yastu syāt kṣatriyaḥ kaścit kāmavṛttaḥ parantapa। naktaṃ ca yudhi yudhyeta na sa jīvet kathaṃcana॥1-159-14॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a kṣatriya; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; कामवृत्तः (kāmavṛttaḥ) - acting according to desire; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; नक्तम् (naktam) - at night; च (ca) - and; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; युध्येत (yudhyeta) - might fight; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; जीवेत् (jīvet) - might live; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(But who might be a kṣatriya, any acting according to desire, O scorcher of foes, and might fight at night in battle, he might not live in any way.)
But, O scorcher of foes, any kṣatriya who acts according to his desires and fights at night in battle will not survive in any way.
यस्तु स्यात्कामवृत्तोऽपि राजा तापत्य सङ्गरे। जयेन्नक्तञ्चरान्सर्वान्स पुरोहितधूर्गतः ॥१-१५९-१५॥
yastu syāt kāmavṛtto'pi rājā tāpatya saṅgare। jayen naktamcarān sarvān sa purohitadhūr gataḥ ॥1-159-15॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; कामवृत्तः (kāmavṛttaḥ) - engaged in desires; अपि (api) - even; राजा (rājā) - king; तापत्य (tāpatya) - fighting; सङ्गरे (saṅgare) - in battle; जयेत् (jayet) - should conquer; नक्तञ्चरान् (naktamcarān) - night-roamers; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; सः (saḥ) - he; पुरोहितधूर्गतः (purohitadhūr gataḥ) - having taken the dust of the priest;]
(But who, even if engaged in desires, the king, fighting in battle, should conquer all night-roamers, he having taken the dust of the priest.)
But if a king, even though given to desires, fights in battle and conquers all the night-roamers, having received the blessings of the priest, he is victorious.
तस्मात्तापत्य यत्किञ्चिन्नृणां श्रेय इहेप्सितम्। तस्मिन्कर्मणि योक्तव्या दान्तात्मानः पुरोहिताः ॥१-१५९-१६॥
tasmāttāpatya yatkiñcin nṛṇāṃ śreya ihepsitam। tasmin karmaṇi yoktavyā dāntātmānaḥ purohitāḥ ॥1-159-16॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; तापत्य (tāpatya) - relating to offspring; यत् (yat) - whatever; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; नृणाम् (nṛṇām) - of men; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - welfare; इह (iha) - here; इप्सितम् (ipsitam) - desired; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; कर्मणि (karmaṇi) - action; योक्तव्याः (yoktavyāḥ) - should be engaged; दान्तात्मानः (dāntātmānaḥ) - self-controlled; पुरोहिताः (purohitāḥ) - priests;]
(Therefore, whatever relating to offspring, anything of men, welfare here desired, in that action, should be engaged self-controlled priests.)

वेदे षडङ्गे निरताः शुचयः सत्यवादिनः। धर्मात्मानः कृतात्मानः स्युर्नृपाणां पुरोहिताः ॥१-१५९-१७॥

(Gain to obtain, not obtained indeed, obtained and to protect; priest should appoint king endowed with virtues.)
A king should appoint as priest a person endowed with virtues, in order to obtain gain not yet obtained, and to protect gain already obtained.
पुरोहितमते तिष्ठेद्य इच्छेत्पृथिवीं नृपः। प्राप्तुं मेरुवरोत्तंसां सर्वशः सागराम्बराम् ॥१-१५९-२०॥
purohitamate tiṣṭhed ya icchet pṛthivīṃ nṛpaḥ। prāptuṃ meruvarottaṃsāṃ sarvaśaḥ sāgarāmbarām ॥1-159-20॥
[पुरोहितमते (purohitamate) - in the opinion of the priest; तिष्ठेत् (tiṣṭhet) - should abide; यः (yaḥ) - who; इच्छेत् (icchet) - desires; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; प्राप्तुम् (prāptum) - to obtain; मेरुवर (meru-vara) - the best of Meru; उत्तंसाम् (uttaṃsām) - adorned with; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; सागराम्बराम् (sāgarāmbarām) - surrounded by oceans;]
(The king who desires to obtain the earth, entirely adorned with the best of Meru and surrounded by oceans, should abide by the opinion of the priest.)
A king wishing to gain the whole earth, adorned with the best of Meru and encircled by oceans, should always act according to the counsel of his priest.
न हि केवलशौर्येण तापत्याभिजनेन च। जयेदब्राह्मणः कश्चिद्भूमिं भूमिपतिः क्वचित् ॥१-१५९-२१॥
na hi kevalaśauryeṇa tāpatyābhijanena ca। jayedabrāhmaṇaḥ kaścidbhūmiṃ bhūmipatiḥ kvacit ॥1-159-21॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; केवलशौर्येण (kevalaśauryeṇa) - by mere valor; तापत्याभिजनेन (tāpatyābhijanena) - by descent from the Tapati lineage; च (ca) - and; जयेत् (jayet) - might conquer; अब्राह्मणः (abrāhmaṇaḥ) - a non-Brahmin; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; भूमिं (bhūmiṃ) - the earth; भूमिपतिः (bhūmipatiḥ) - a king; क्वचित् (kvacit) - at any time;]
(Not indeed by mere valor and by descent from the Tapati lineage might any non-Brahmin king conquer the earth at any time.)
A non-Brahmin king cannot conquer the earth at any time merely by valor or by descent from the Tapati lineage.
तस्मादेवं विजानीहि कुरूणां वंशवर्धन। ब्राह्मणप्रमुखं राज्यं शक्यं पालयितुं चिरम् ॥१-१५९-२२॥
tasmādevaṃ vijānīhi kurūṇāṃ vaṃśavardhana। brāhmaṇapramukhaṃ rājyaṃ śakyaṃ pālayituṃ ciram ॥1-159-22॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विजानीहि (vijānīhi) - know; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; वंशवर्धन (vaṃśavardhana) - O increaser of the lineage; ब्राह्मणप्रमुखम् (brāhmaṇapramukham) - headed by Brāhmaṇas; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; पालयितुम् (pālayitum) - to be protected; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time;]
(Therefore, thus know, O increaser of the Kurus' lineage, that a kingdom headed by Brāhmaṇas can be protected for a long time.)
Therefore, O increaser of the Kurus' lineage, understand that a kingdom led by Brāhmaṇas can indeed be sustained for a long time.
