te pratastḥ puraskṛtya mātaraṃ puruṣarṣabhāḥ। samair udaṅmukhair mārgyair yathoddiṣṭaṃ parantapāḥ ॥1-158-1॥

vihitaṃ kāmacārāṇāṃ yakṣa-gandharva-rakṣasām। śeṣam anyan manuṣyāṇāṃ kāmacāram iha smṛtam ॥1-158-8॥

ततो रात्रौ प्राप्नुवतो जलं ब्रह्मविदो जनाः। गर्हयन्ति नरान्सर्वान्बलस्थान्नृपतीनपि ॥१-१५८-१०॥
tato rātrau prāpnuvato jalaṃ brahmavido janāḥ। garhayanti narānsarvān balasthān nṛpatīn api॥1-158-10॥

आरात्तिष्ठत मा मह्यं समीपमुपसर्पत। कस्मान्मां नाभिजानीत प्राप्तं भागीरथीजलम् ॥१-१५८-११॥

aṅgāraparṇaṃ gandharvaṃ vitta māṃ svabalāśrayam। ahaṃ hi mānī cerṣyuśca kuberasya priyaḥ sakhā ॥1-158-12॥

न कुणपाः शृङ्गिणो वा न देवा न च मानुषाः। इदं समुपसर्पन्ति तत्किं समुपसर्पथ ॥१-१५८-१४॥
na kuṇapāḥ śṛṅgiṇo vā na devā na ca mānuṣāḥ। idaṃ samupasarpanti tatkiṃ samupasarpatha ॥1-158-14॥

samudre himavatpārśve nadyāmasyāṃ ca durmate| rātrāvahani sandhau ca kasya kḷptaḥ parigrahaḥ ॥1-158-15॥

वयं च शक्तिसम्पन्ना अकाले त्वामधृष्णुमः। अशक्ता हि क्षणे क्रूरे युष्मानर्चन्ति मानवाः ॥१-१५८-१६॥
vayaṃ ca śaktisampannā akāle tvām adhṛṣṇumaḥ। aśaktā hi kṣaṇe krūre yuṣmān arcanti mānavāḥ॥1-158-16॥

(We and (those) endowed with power did not dare (approach) you at the wrong time. Powerless indeed, at a cruel moment, humans worship you.)

[पुरा (purā) - formerly; हिमवतः (himavataḥ) - of Himavat (the Himalaya); च (ca) - and; एषा (eṣā) - this; हेमशृङ्गात् (hemaśṛṅgāt) - from the golden peak; विनिःसृता (viniḥsṛtā) - emerged; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; समुद्राम्भः (samudrāmbhaḥ) - to the ocean's water; सप्तधा (saptadhā) - in seven ways; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - proceeds;]
(Formerly, this (river) Gaṅgā, having emerged from the golden peak of Himavat, having gone to the ocean's water, proceeds in seven ways.)
Long ago, this Gaṅgā, having sprung from the golden peak of the Himalayas, reached the ocean and then divided herself into seven streams.
इयं भूत्वा चैकवप्रा शुचिराकाशगा पुनः। देवेषु गङ्गा गन्धर्व प्राप्नोत्यलकनन्दताम् ॥१-१५८-१८॥
iyaṃ bhūtvā caikavaprā śucir ākāśagā punaḥ। deveṣu gaṅgā gandharva prāpnoty alakanandatām ॥1-158-18॥

(This, having become and having a single channel, pure, moving through the sky again, among the gods, Gaṅgā, O Gandharva, attains the state of Alakanandā.)

तथा पितृन्वैतरणी दुस्तरा पापकर्मभिः। गङ्गा भवति गन्धर्व यथा द्वैपायनोऽब्रवीत् ॥१-१५८-१९॥
tathā pitṛn-vaitaraṇī dustarā pāpakarmabhiḥ। gaṅgā bhavati gandharva yathā dvaipāyano'bravīt ॥1-158-19॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; पितृन् (pitṛn) - ancestors; वैतरणी (vaitaraṇī) - Vaitarani (river); दुस्तरा (dustarā) - difficult to cross; पापकर्मभिः (pāpakarmabhiḥ) - by evil deeds; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Ganga (river); भवति (bhavati) - becomes; गन्धर्व (gandharva) - O Gandharva; यथा (yathā) - as; द्वैपायनः (dvaipāyanaḥ) - Dvaipayana (Vyasa); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]

One who, having restrained and conquered by force, grants refuge—even to an enemy—and unites him with his own life for the sake of welfare, what does he not deserve?

सेयं कापुरुषं प्राप्ता गुरुदत्ता प्रणश्यति। आगमोऽस्या मया प्रोक्तो वीर्यं प्रतिनिबोध मे ॥१-१५८-४१॥

समानपद्ये षण्मासान्स्थितो विद्यां लभेदिमाम्। अनुनेष्याम्यहं विद्यां स्वयं तुभ्यं व्रते कृते ॥१-१५८-४३॥

vidyayā hy anayā rājan vayaṃ nṛbhyo viśeṣitāḥ। aviśiṣṭāś ca devānām anubhāva-pravartitāḥ॥1-158-44॥

(By this knowledge indeed, O king, we are distinguished from men; and not distinguished from the gods, set in motion by their power.)

गन्धर्वजानामश्वानामहं पुरुषसत्तम। भ्रातृभ्यस्तव पञ्चभ्यः पृथग्दाता शतं शतम् ॥१-१५८-४५॥
