hanta te kathayiṣyāmi kathāmetāṃ manoramām। yathāvadakhilāṃ pārtha dharmyāṃ dharmabhṛtāṃ vara ॥1-160-4॥

उक्तवानस्मि येन त्वां तापत्य इति यद्वचः। तत्तेऽहं कथयिष्यामि शृणुष्वैकमना मम ॥१-१६०-५॥
uktavānasmi yena tvāṃ tāpatya iti yadvacaḥ। tatte'haṃ kathayiṣyāmi śṛṇuṣvaikamanā mama ॥1-160-5॥

विवस्वतो वै कौन्तेय सावित्र्यवरजा विभो। विश्रुता त्रिषु लोकेषु तपती तपसा युता ॥१-१६०-७॥
vivasvato vai kaunteya sāvitr-yavarajā vibho। viśrutā triṣu lokeṣu tapatī tapasā yutā ॥1-160-7॥

सुविभक्तानवद्याङ्गी स्वसितायतलोचना। स्वाचारा चैव साध्वी च सुवेषा चैव भामिनी ॥१-१६०-९॥
su-vibhaktā-anavadya-aṅgī sva-sita-āyata-locanā। sva-ācārā ca eva sādhvī ca su-veṣā ca eva bhāminī ॥1-160-9॥

न तस्याः सदृशं कञ्चित्त्रिषु लोकेषु भारत। भर्तारं सविता मेने रूपशीलकुलश्रुतैः ॥१-१६०-१०॥
na tasyāḥ sadṛśaṃ kañcit triṣu lokeṣu bhārata। bhartāraṃ savitā mene rūpa-śīla-kula-śrutaiḥ ॥1-160-10॥

सम्प्राप्तयौवनां पश्यन्देयां दुहितरं तु ताम्। नोपलेभे ततः शान्तिं सम्प्रदानं विचिन्तयन् ॥१-१६०-११॥
samprāptayauvanāṃ paśyandeyāṃ duhitaraṃ tu tām। nopalebhe tataḥ śāntiṃ sampradānaṃ vicintayan ॥1-160-11॥

(Having seen his daughter, who had attained youth and was worthy to be given (in marriage), but not having obtained peace thereafter, he pondered over giving her away.)
Seeing his daughter, now of marriageable age and worthy to be given, he found no peace and kept pondering over her marriage.
अर्थर्क्षपुत्रः कौन्तेय कुरूणामृषभो बली। सूर्यमाराधयामास नृपः संवरणः सदा ॥१-१६०-१२॥

शुश्रूषुरनहंवादी शुचिः पौरवनन्दनः। अंशुमन्तं समुद्यन्तं पूजयामास भक्तिमान् ॥१-१६०-१४॥
śuśrūṣur anahaṃvādī śuciḥ pauravanandanaḥ। aṃśumantaṃ samudyantaṃ pūjayāmāsa bhaktimān ॥1-160-14॥

(Then the Sun considered Saṃvaraṇa, the grateful one, the knower of dharma, not equal in form on earth, as the equal husband of Tapati.)
Then the Sun thought that Saṃvaraṇa, who was grateful and knew dharma, though unmatched in form on earth, was a worthy husband for Tapati.
दातुमैच्छत्ततः कन्यां तस्मै संवरणाय ताम्। नृपोत्तमाय कौरव्य विश्रुताभिजनाय वै ॥१-१६०-१६॥
dātumaicchat tataḥ kanyāṃ tasmai saṃvaraṇāya tām। nṛpottamāya kauravya viśrutābhijanāya vai ॥1-160-16॥
[दातुम् (dātum) - to give; ऐच्छत् (aicchat) - desired; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - maiden; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; संवरणाय (saṃvaraṇāya) - to Saṃvaraṇa; ताम् (tām) - her; नृपोत्तमाय (nṛpottamāya) - to the best of kings; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O Kauravya; विश्रुत (viśruta) - renowned; अभिजनाय (abhijanāya) - for noble lineage; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Then he desired to give the maiden to him, to Saṃvaraṇa, her, to the best of kings, O Kauravya, for noble and renowned lineage, indeed.)

[यथा (yathā) - just as; हि (hi) - indeed; दिवि (divi) - in the sky; दीप्त-अंशुः (dīpta-aṃśuḥ) - having shining rays; प्रभासयति (prabhāsayati) - illuminates; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; तथा (tathā) - so; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; मही-पालः (mahī-pālaḥ) - the king; दीप्त्या (dīptyā) - by radiance; संवरणः (saṃvaraṇaḥ) - Saṃvaraṇa; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Just as indeed in the sky, the one with shining rays illuminates by brilliance, so on earth, the king Saṃvaraṇa became (illuminated) by radiance.)
Just as the one with shining rays illuminates the sky with brilliance, so did King Saṃvaraṇa become radiant on earth.
यथार्चयन्ति चादित्यमुद्यन्तं ब्रह्मवादिनः। तथा संवरणं पार्थ ब्राह्मणावरजाः प्रजाः ॥१-१६०-१८॥
yathārcayanti cādit yamudyantaṃ brahmavādinaḥ। tathā saṃvaraṇaṃ pārtha brāhmaṇāvarajāḥ prajāḥ ॥1-160-18॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; अर्चयन्ति (arcayanti) - they worship; च (ca) - and; आदित्यम् (ādityam) - the Sun; उद्यन्तम् (udyantam) - rising; ब्रह्मवादिनः (brahmavādinaḥ) - knowers of Brahman; तथा (tathā) - so; संवरणम् (saṃvaraṇam) - Saṃvaraṇa; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; ब्राह्मणावरजाः (brāhmaṇāvarajāḥ) - descendants of Brāhmaṇas; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects;]
(Just as the knowers of Brahman worship the rising Sun, so also, O son of Pṛthā, the descendants of Brāhmaṇas worship Saṃvaraṇa, the subjects.)
O Pārtha, just as the knowers of Brahman worship the rising Sun, so too do the descendants of Brāhmaṇas worship Saṃvaraṇa, along with the people.
स सोममति कान्तत्वादादित्यमति तेजसा। बभूव नृपतिः श्रीमान्सुहृदां दुर्हृदामपि ॥१-१६०-१९॥
sa somamati kāntatvād ādityamati tejasā। babhūva nṛpatiḥ śrīmān suhṛdāṃ durhṛdām api ॥1-160-19॥
[स (sa) - he; सोममति (somamati) - having the mind like Soma (the Moon); कान्तत्वात् (kāntatvāt) - due to loveliness; आदित्यमति (ādityamati) - having the mind like Āditya (the Sun); तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; बभूव (babhūva) - became; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - the king; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; दुर्हृदाम् (durhṛdām) - of enemies; अपि (api) - even;]
(He, having a mind like Soma due to loveliness, and a mind like Āditya by brilliance, became the king, prosperous, of friends and even of enemies.)
He, possessing a mind as gentle as the Moon in loveliness and as brilliant as the Sun, became a prosperous king, cherished by friends and even respected by enemies.
एवङ्गुणस्य नृपतेस्तथावृत्तस्य कौरव। तस्मै दातुं मनश्चक्रे तपतीं तपनः स्वयम् ॥१-१६०-२०॥
evaṅ-guṇasya nṛpates tathā-vṛttasya kaurava। tasmai dātuṃ manaś cakre tapatīṃ tapanaḥ svayam ॥1-160-20॥

(Thus, of the quality, of the king, in that way, of the conduct, O Kaurava, to him, to give, mind, made, Tapatī, the Sun, himself.)
O Kaurava, seeing such qualities and conduct in the king, the Sun himself resolved in his mind to give Tapatī to him.
स कदाचिदथो राजा श्रीमानुरुयशा भुवि। चचार मृगयां पार्थ पर्वतोपवने किल ॥१-१६०-२१॥
sa kadācid atho rājā śrīmān uruyaśā bhuvi। cacāra mṛgayāṃ pārtha parvatopavane kila ॥1-160-21॥

एवं स तर्कयामास रूपद्रविणसम्पदा। कन्यामसदृशीं लोके नृपः संवरणस्तदा ॥१-१६०-३१॥
evaṃ sa tarkayāmāsa rūpadraviṇasampadā। kanyāmasadṛśīṃ loke nṛpaḥ saṃvaraṇastadā ॥1-160-31॥

त्वं हि सर्वानवद्याङ्गी सर्वाभरणभूषिता। विभूषणमिवैतेषां भूषणानामभीप्सितम् ॥१-१६०-३५॥
tvaṃ hi sarvānavadyāṅgī sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā। vibhūṣaṇam iva eteṣāṃ bhūṣaṇānām abhīpsitam ॥1-160-35॥
