The gandharva said.
ततो दृष्ट्वाश्रमपदं रहितं तैः सुतैर्मुनिः। निर्जगाम सुदुःखार्तः पुनरेवाश्रमात्ततः ॥१-१६७-१॥
tato dṛṣṭvāśramapadaṃ rahitaṃ taiḥ sutairmuniḥ। nirjagāma suduḥkhārtaḥ punarevāśramāttataḥ ॥1-167-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; आश्रमपदं (āśramapadam) - hermitage place; रहितं (rahitam) - bereft; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; सुतैः (sutaiḥ) - sons; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; निर्जगाम (nirjagāma) - departed; सुदुःखार्तः (suduḥkhārtaḥ) - greatly afflicted by sorrow; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; आश्रमात् (āśramāt) - from the hermitage; ततः (tataḥ) - from there;]
(From there, having seen the hermitage place bereft by those sons, the sage, greatly afflicted by sorrow, departed again indeed from the hermitage from there.)
Seeing the hermitage deserted by his sons, the sage, overwhelmed with grief, once again left the hermitage.
सोऽपश्यत्सरितं पूर्णां प्रावृट्काले नवाम्भसा। वृक्षान्बहुविधान्पार्थ वहन्तीं तीरजान्बहून् ॥१-१६७-२॥
so'paśyat saritaṃ pūrṇāṃ prāvṛṭkāle navāmbhasā। vṛkṣān bahuvidhān pārtha vahantīṃ tīrajān bahūn ॥1-167-2॥

(He saw the river full in the rainy season with fresh water, carrying many trees of various kinds, O Pārtha, many grown on the bank.)

अथ चिन्तां समापेदे पुनः पौरवनन्दन। अम्भस्यस्या निमज्जेयमिति दुःखसमन्वितः ॥१-१६७-३॥
atha cintāṃ samāpede punaḥ pauravanandana। ambhasyasyā nimajjeyamiti duḥkhasamanvitaḥ ॥1-167-3॥

(Then the descendant of Paurava again entered thought: 'I might sink in this water,' thus filled with sorrow.)
Then the descendant of Paurava again became lost in thought, filled with sorrow, thinking, 'I might sink in this water.'
ततः पाशैस्तदात्मानं गाढं बद्ध्वा महामुनिः। तस्या जले महानद्या निममज्ज सुदुःखितः ॥१-१६७-४॥
tataḥ pāśais tad-ātmānaṃ gāḍhaṃ baddhvā mahāmuniḥ। tasyā jale mahānadyā nimamajja suduḥkhitaḥ॥1-167-4॥

(Then, having tightly bound that self with bonds, the great sage, very distressed, sank in the water of her great river.)
Then the great sage, having tightly bound himself with those bonds, very sorrowful, sank into the water of her great river.
अथ छित्त्वा नदी पाशांस्तस्यारिबलमर्दन। समस्थं तमृषिं कृत्वा विपाशं समवासृजत् ॥१-१६७-५॥
atha chittvā nadī pāśāṃs tasyāribalamardana। samasthaṃ tam ṛṣiṃ kṛtvā vipāśaṃ samavāsṛjat ॥1-167-5॥

(Then, having cut the river fetters, the destroyer of enemy's strength, having completely placed the sage, released (him) at the Vipāśā.)

उत्ततार ततः पाशैर्विमुक्तः स महानृषिः। विपाशेति च नामास्या नद्याश्चक्रे महानृषिः ॥१-१६७-६॥

(The great sage, freed from the bonds, then rose up. The great sage made 'Vipāśā' the name of this river.)
Freed from the bonds, the great sage rose up and named this river 'Vipāśā'.
शोके बुद्धिं ततश्चक्रे न चैकत्र व्यतिष्ठत। सोऽगच्छत्पर्वतांश्चैव सरितश्च सरांसि च ॥१-१६७-७॥
śoke buddhiṃ tataś cakre na ca ekatra vyatiṣṭhata| so'gacchat parvatāṃś caiva saritaś ca sarāṃsi ca ॥1-167-7॥
[शोके (śoke) - in grief; बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - mind; ततः (tataḥ) - then; चक्रे (cakre) - made; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एकत्र (ekatra) - in one place; व्यतिष्ठत (vyatiṣṭhata) - remained; सः (saḥ) - he; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - went; पर्वतान् (parvatān) - mountains; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सरितः (saritaḥ) - rivers; च (ca) - and; सरांसि (sarāṃsi) - lakes; च (ca) - and;]
(In grief, he then made up his mind, but did not remain in one place; he went to the mountains, and indeed to the rivers and lakes.)
Overcome by grief, he resolved in his mind, but could not stay in one place; so he wandered among the mountains, rivers, and lakes.
ततः स पुनरेवर्षिर्नदीं हैमवतीं तदा। चण्डग्राहवतीं दृष्ट्वा तस्याः स्रोतस्यवापतत् ॥१-१६७-८॥
tataḥ sa punarevarṣirnadīṃ haimavatīṃ tadā। caṇḍagrāhavatīṃ dṛṣṭvā tasyāḥ srotasyavāpatat ॥1-167-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; नदीम् (nadīm) - river; हैमवतीम् (haimavatīm) - Haimavati; तदा (tadā) - then; चण्डग्राहवतीम् (caṇḍagrāhavatīm) - having fierce crocodiles; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; स्रोतस्य (srotasya) - of the current; अपतत् (apatat) - fell;]
(Then he, the sage, again at that time, having seen the Haimavati river with fierce crocodiles, fell into her current.)
Then, the sage once again, seeing the Haimavati river filled with fierce crocodiles, fell into its current.
सा तमग्निसमं विप्रमनुचिन्त्य सरिद्वरा। शतधा विद्रुता यस्माच्छतद्रुरिति विश्रुता ॥१-१६७-९॥
sā tam agnisamaṃ vipram anucintya saridvarā। śatadhā vidrutā yasmāc chatadrur iti viśrutā ॥1-167-9॥
[सा (sā) - she; तम् (tam) - him; अग्निसमम् (agnisamam) - equal to fire; विप्रम् (vipram) - sage; अनुचिन्त्य (anucintya) - having considered; सरिद्वरा (saridvarā) - the best of rivers; शतधा (śatadhā) - into a hundred parts; विद्रुता (vidrutā) - having rushed; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because of which; शतद्रुः (śatadruḥ) - Śatadru (name of the river); इति (iti) - thus; विश्रुता (viśrutā) - is known;]
(She, having considered that sage who was equal to fire, the best of rivers, rushed into a hundred parts; because of which she is known as 'Śatadru'.)
The best of rivers, having considered the sage who was equal to fire, split herself into a hundred streams; therefore, she is known as 'Śatadru'.
ततः स्थलगतं दृष्ट्वा तत्राप्यात्मानमात्मना। मर्तुं न शक्यमित्युक्त्वा पुनरेवाश्रमं ययौ ॥१-१६७-१०॥
tataḥ sthalagataṃ dṛṣṭvā tatrāpyātmānamātmanā। martuṃ na śakyamityuktvā punarevāśramaṃ yayau ॥1-167-10॥

(Then, having seen (him) gone to land, there also (he saw) the self by himself; having said "it is not possible to die," again indeed he went to the hermitage.)
Then, seeing that he had gone to land, and perceiving himself there as well, he said, "It is not possible to die," and again he went back to the hermitage.
वध्वादृश्यन्त्यानुगत आश्रमाभिमुखो व्रजन्। अथ शुश्राव सङ्गत्या वेदाध्ययननिःस्वनम् ॥ पृष्ठतः परिपूर्णार्थैः षड्भिरङ्गैरलङ्कृतम् ॥१-१६७-११॥
vadhvādṛśyantyānugata āśramābhimukho vrajan। atha śuśrāva saṅgatyā vedādhyayana-niḥsvanam ॥ pṛṣṭhataḥ paripūrṇārthaiḥ ṣaḍbhir-aṅgair-alaṅkṛtam ॥1-167-11॥
[वध्वा (vadhvā) - by the bride; अदृश्यन्त्या (adṛśyantyā) - who was not visible; अनुगतः (anugataḥ) - having followed; आश्रमाभिमुखः (āśramābhimukhaḥ) - facing towards the hermitage; व्रजन् (vrajan) - going; अथ (atha) - then; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - he heard; सङ्गत्या (saṅgatyā) - with company; वेदाध्ययननिःस्वनम् (vedādhyayana-niḥsvanam) - the sound of Veda recitation; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; परिपूर्णार्थैः (paripūrṇārthaiḥ) - with fully meaningful; षड्भिः (ṣaḍbhiḥ) - with six; अङ्गैः (aṅgaiḥ) - with limbs; अलङ्कृतम् (alaṅkṛtam) - adorned;]
(Having followed the bride, who was not visible, facing towards the hermitage and going, then he heard, with company, the sound of Veda recitation from behind, adorned with six limbs, with fully meaningful (words).)
As he proceeded towards the hermitage, following the unseen bride, he then heard from behind, in company, the sound of Vedic recitation, perfectly adorned with the six limbs and full of meaning.
अनुव्रजति को न्वेष मामित्येव च सोऽब्रवीत्। अहं त्वदृश्यती नाम्ना तं स्नुषा प्रत्यभाषत ॥ शक्तेर्भार्या महाभाग तपोयुक्ता तपस्विनी ॥१-१६७-१२॥
anuvrajati ko nveṣa māmityeva ca so'bravīt। ahaṃ tvadṛśyatī nāmnā taṃ snuṣā pratyabhāṣata ॥ śakterbhāryā mahābhāga tapoyuktā tapasvinī ॥1-167-12॥

(Who indeed is this that follows me? Thus he said. I, named Tvadṛśyatī, his daughter-in-law, addressed him. The wife of Śakti, most fortunate, endowed with austerity, ascetic woman.)
He asked, "Who is this following me?" Thus he spoke. I, named Tvadṛśyatī, his daughter-in-law, addressed him. She is the wife of Śakti, most fortunate, endowed with austerity, an ascetic woman.
वसिष्ठ उवाच॥

Vasiṣṭha said.
पुत्रि कस्यैष साङ्गस्य वेदस्याध्ययनस्वनः। पुरा साङ्गस्य वेदस्य शक्तेरिव मया श्रुतः ॥१-१६७-१३॥
putri kasyaiṣa sāṅgasya vedasyādhyayanasvanaḥ। purā sāṅgasya vedasya śakteriva mayā śrutaḥ ॥1-167-13॥

अयं कुक्षौ समुत्पन्नः शक्तेर्गर्भः सुतस्य ते। समा द्वादश तस्येह वेदानभ्यसतो मुने ॥१-१६७-१४॥
ayaṃ kukṣau samutpannaḥ śaktergarbhaḥ sutasya te। samā dvādaśa tasyeha vedānabhyasato mune ॥1-167-14॥

(This embryo of Śakti, your son, having arisen in the womb, here studied the Vedas for twelve years, O sage.)

एवमुक्तस्ततो हृष्टो वसिष्ठः श्रेष्ठभागृषिः। अस्ति सन्तानमित्युक्त्वा मृत्योः पार्थ न्यवर्तत ॥१-१६७-१५॥
evam-uktas-tato hṛṣṭo vasiṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭhabhāg-ṛṣiḥ। asti santānam-ity-uktvā mṛtyoḥ pārtha nyavartata ॥1-167-15॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - gladdened; वसिष्ठः (vasiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; श्रेष्ठभाग् (śreṣṭhabhāg) - having the best share; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; अस्ति (asti) - there is; सन्तानम् (santānam) - progeny; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - Death; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; न्यवर्तत (nyavartata) - turned back;]
(Thus having been spoken to, then gladdened, Vasiṣṭha, the sage of the best share, having said "There is progeny," Death, O Pārtha, turned back.)
Thus addressed, the delighted sage Vasiṣṭha, having declared "There is progeny," caused Death to turn back, O Pārtha.
ततः प्रतिनिवृत्तः स तया वध्वा सहानघ। कल्माषपादमासीनं ददर्श विजने वने ॥१-१६७-१६॥
tataḥ pratinivṛttaḥ sa tayā vadhvā sahānagha। kalmāṣapādam āsīnaṃ dadarśa vijane vane ॥1-167-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रतिनिवृत्तः (pratinivṛttaḥ) - having returned; स (sa) - he; तया (tayā) - with her; वध्वा (vadhvā) - with the bride; सह (saha) - together; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; कल्माषपादम् (kalmāṣapādam) - Kalmashapada; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - seated; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; विजने (vijane) - in a lonely; वने (vane) - forest;]
(Then, having returned, he, together with the bride, O sinless one, saw Kalmashapada seated in a lonely forest.)
Then, O sinless one, he returned with the bride and saw Kalmashapada sitting alone in the forest.
स तु दृष्ट्वैव तं राजा क्रुद्ध उत्थाय भारत। आविष्टो रक्षसोग्रेण इयेषात्तुं ततः स्म तम् ॥१-१६७-१७॥
sa tu dṛṣṭvaiva taṃ rājā kruddha utthāya bhārata। āviṣṭo rakṣasogreṇa iyeṣāttuṃ tataḥ sma tam ॥1-167-17॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - indeed; तं (taṃ) - him; राजा (rājā) - the king; क्रुद्ध (kruddha) - angry; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; आविष्टः (āviṣṭaḥ) - possessed; रक्षसः (rakṣasaḥ) - by the demon; उग्रेण (ugreṇa) - fierce; इयेष (iyeṣa) - he desired; आत्तुम् (āttum) - to kill; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्म (sma) - indeed; तम् (tam) - him;]
(He but having seen indeed him, the king, angry, having risen, O Bhārata, possessed by the fierce demon, he desired to kill him then indeed.)
But as soon as he saw him, the king, enraged, rose up, O Bhārata, possessed by the fierce demon, and then indeed sought to kill him.
अदृश्यन्ती तु तं दृष्ट्वा क्रूरकर्माणमग्रतः। भयसंविग्नया वाचा वसिष्ठमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१-१६७-१८॥
adṛśyantī tu taṃ dṛṣṭvā krūrakarmāṇam agrataḥ। bhayasaṃvignayā vācā vasiṣṭham idam abravīt ॥1-167-18॥

(But not being seen, having seen him of cruel deeds in front, with a voice agitated by fear, she said this to Vasiṣṭha.)
But, remaining unseen, upon seeing him performing cruel deeds ahead, she, with a voice trembling with fear, spoke these words to Vasiṣṭha.
असौ मृत्युरिवोग्रेण दण्डेन भगवन्नितः। प्रगृहीतेन काष्ठेन राक्षसोऽभ्येति भीषणः ॥१-१६७-१९॥
asau mṛtyur ivogreṇa daṇḍena bhagavan nitaḥ। pragṛhītena kāṣṭhena rākṣasaḥ abhyeti bhīṣaṇaḥ॥1-167-19॥
[असौ (asau) - that; (he; yonder; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; (personification; इव (iva) - like; as; उग्रेण (ugreṇa) - with fierce; with terrible; दण्डेन (daṇḍena) - with staff; with rod; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; O lord; नितः (nitaḥ) - led; brought; प्रगृहीतेन (pragṛhītena) - seized; grasped; काष्ठेन (kāṣṭhena) - with wood; with stick; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - the demon; the rākṣasa; अभ्येति (abhyeti) - approaches; comes near; भीषणः (bhīṣaṇaḥ) - terrible; fearful;]
(That one, like death, with a fierce staff, O venerable one, led, with a seized stick, the demon approaches, terrible.)
