Vasiṣṭha said.
मा भैः पुत्रि न भेतव्यं रक्षसस्ते कथञ्चन। नैतद्रक्षो भयं यस्मात्पश्यसि त्वमुपस्थितम् ॥१-१६८-१॥
mā bhaiḥ putri na bhetavyaṃ rakṣasaste kathaṃcana। naitad rakṣo bhayaṃ yasmāt paśyasi tvam upasthitam ॥1-168-1॥
[मा (mā) - do not; भैः (bhaiḥ) - fear; पुत्रि (putri) - O daughter; न (na) - not; भेतव्यम् (bhetavyam) - to be feared; रक्षसः (rakṣasaḥ) - of the demon; ते (te) - to you; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; रक्षः (rakṣaḥ) - demon; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - from which; पश्यसि (paśyasi) - you see; त्वम् (tvam) - you; उपस्थितम् (upasthitam) - present;]
(Do not fear, O daughter; there is nothing to be feared from the demon for you in any way. This demon is not the fear which you see as present.)
Do not be afraid, my daughter; you have nothing to fear from this demon in any way. What you see before you is not a danger from the demon.
राजा कल्माषपादोऽयं वीर्यवान्प्रथितो भुवि। स एषोऽस्मिन्वनोद्देशे निवसत्यतिभीषणः ॥१-१६८-२॥
rājā kalmāṣapādo'yaṃ vīryavān prathito bhuvi। sa eṣo'smin vanoddeśe nivasaty atibhīṣaṇaḥ ॥1-168-2॥

तमापतन्तं सम्प्रेक्ष्य वसिष्ठो भगवानृषिः। वारयामास तेजस्वी हुङ्करेणैव भारत ॥१-१६८-३॥
tam āpatantaṃ samprekṣya vasiṣṭho bhagavān ṛṣiḥ। vārayām āsa tejasvī huṅkareṇaiva bhārata॥1-168-3॥

O Bhārata, seeing him approaching, the venerable sage Vasiṣṭha, powerful as he was, restrained him by a mere roar.
मन्त्रपूतेन च पुनः स तमभ्युक्ष्य वारिणा। मोक्षयामास वै घोराद्राक्षसाद्राजसत्तमम् ॥१-१६८-४॥
mantrapūtena ca punaḥ sa tam abhyukṣya vāriṇā। mokṣayāmāsa vai ghorād rākṣasād rājasattamam ॥1-168-4॥
[मन्त्रपूतेन (mantrapūtena) - by what is purified by mantra; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; सः (saḥ) - he; तम् (tam) - him; अभ्युक्ष्य (abhyukṣya) - having sprinkled; वारिणा (vāriṇā) - with water; मोक्षयामास (mokṣayāmāsa) - released; वै (vai) - indeed; घोरात् (ghorāt) - from terrible; राक्षसात् (rākṣasāt) - from demon; राजसत्तमम् (rājasattamam) - the best among kings;]
(And again, having sprinkled him with water purified by mantra, he indeed released the best among kings from the terrible demon.)
Then, having sprinkled him again with water purified by mantra, he truly freed the best of kings from the dreadful demon.
स हि द्वादश वर्षाणि वसिष्ठस्यैव तेजसा। ग्रस्त आसीद्गृहेणेव पर्वकाले दिवाकरः ॥१-१६८-५॥
sa hi dvādaśa varṣāṇi vasiṣṭhasyaiva tejasā। grasta āsīd gṛheṇeva parvakāle divākaraḥ॥1-168-5॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; वसिष्ठस्य (vasiṣṭhasya) - of Vasiṣṭha; एव (eva) - only; तेजसा (tejasā) - by the brilliance; ग्रस्त (grasta) - overwhelmed; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; गृहेण (gṛheṇa) - by the house; इव (iva) - as if; पर्वकाले (parvakāle) - at the time of the festival; दिवाकरः (divākaraḥ) - the sun;]
(He indeed for twelve years by the brilliance of Vasiṣṭha was overwhelmed, just as the sun is by the house at the time of the festival.)
For twelve years, he was completely subdued by the brilliance of Vasiṣṭha, just as the sun is hidden by a house during a festival.
रक्षसा विप्रमुक्तोऽथ स नृपस्तद्वनं महत्। तेजसा रञ्जयामास सन्ध्याभ्रमिव भास्करः ॥१-१६८-६॥
rakṣasā vipramukto’tha sa nṛpas tad vanaṃ mahat। tejasā rañjayām āsa sandhyābhram iva bhāskaraḥ ॥1-168-6॥
[रक्षसा (rakṣasā) - by the demon; विप्रमुक्तः (vipramuktaḥ) - completely released; अथ (atha) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; तत् (tat) - that; वनम् (vanam) - forest; महत् (mahat) - great; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; रञ्जयाम् (rañjayām) - caused to shine; आस (āsa) - he did; सन्ध्या (sandhyā) - twilight; अभ्रम् (abhram) - cloud; इव (iva) - like; भास्करः (bhāskaraḥ) - the sun;]
(By the demon completely released, then he, the king, that great forest by brilliance caused to shine, like the sun (makes) the twilight cloud.)
Then, having been completely released from the demon, the king illuminated that great forest with his brilliance, just as the sun lights up the twilight clouds.
प्रतिलभ्य ततः सञ्ज्ञामभिवाद्य कृताञ्जलिः। उवाच नृपतिः काले वसिष्ठमृषिसत्तमम् ॥१-१६८-७॥
pratilabhya tataḥ sañjñām abhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ। uvāca nṛpatiḥ kāle vasiṣṭham ṛṣisattamam ॥1-168-7॥
[प्रतिलभ्य (pratilabhya) - having obtained; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सञ्ज्ञाम् (sañjñām) - message; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; उवाच (uvāca) - said; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - the king; काले (kāle) - at the right time; वसिष्ठम् (vasiṣṭham) - Vasiṣṭha; ऋषिसत्तमम् (ṛṣisattamam) - the best among sages;]
(Having obtained the message, then, having saluted with joined palms, the king said at the right time to Vasiṣṭha, the best among sages.)
After receiving the message, the king, with joined palms, respectfully greeted and at the proper time spoke to Vasiṣṭha, the foremost of sages.
सौदासोऽहं महाभाग याज्यस्ते द्विजसत्तम। अस्मिन्काले यदिष्टं ते ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते ॥१-१६८-८॥
saudāso'ham mahābhāga yājyas te dvijasattama। asmin kāle yad iṣṭaṃ te brūhi kiṃ karavāṇi te ॥1-168-8॥
[सौदासः (saudāsaḥ) - descendant of Saudāsa; अहम् (aham) - I; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate; याज्यः (yājyaḥ) - fit to be sacrificed for; ते (te) - by you; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; काले (kāle) - time; यत् (yat) - which; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - desired; ते (te) - by you; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; किम् (kim) - what; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - shall I do; ते (te) - for you;]
(I am Saudāsa, O greatly fortunate, fit to be sacrificed for by you, O best of Brāhmaṇas. In this time, whatever is desired by you, tell (me), what shall I do for you?)
I am Saudāsa, O greatly fortunate one, worthy of your sacrifice, O best of Brāhmaṇas. At this time, tell me whatever you desire—what shall I do for you?
वसिष्ठ उवाच॥

Vasiṣṭha said.
वृत्तमेतद्यथाकालं गच्छ राज्यं प्रशाधि तत्। ब्राह्मणांश्च मनुष्येन्द्र मावमंस्थाः कदाचन ॥१-१६८-९॥
vṛttam etad yathā-kālaṃ gaccha rājyaṃ praśādhi tat | brāhmaṇāṃś ca manuṣyendra mā avamaṃsthāḥ kadācana ||1-168-9||
[वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - event; एतत् (etat) - this; यथा (yathā) - according to; कालम् (kālam) - time; गच्छ (gaccha) - proceed; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; प्रशाधि (praśādhi) - govern; तत् (tat) - that; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; मनुष्येन्द्र (manuṣyendra) - O king of men; मा (mā) - do not; अवमंस्थाः (avamaṃsthāḥ) - despise; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever;]
(This event, according to time, proceed; kingdom govern that; Brāhmaṇas and, O king of men, do not despise ever.)
O king of men, proceed with this event at the proper time, govern the kingdom, and never despise the Brāhmaṇas at any time.

नावमंस्याम्यहं ब्रह्मन्कदाचिद्ब्राह्मणर्षभान्। त्वन्निदेशे स्थितः शश्वत्पुजयिष्याम्यहं द्विजान् ॥१-१६८-१०॥
nāvamaṁsyāmyahaṁ brahman kadācid brāhmaṇaṛṣabhān। tvannideśe sthitaḥ śaśvat pujayiṣyāmyahaṁ dvijān ॥1-168-10॥
[न (na) - not; अवमंस्यामि (avamaṁsyāmi) - I will disrespect; अहम् (aham) - I; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; कदाचित् (kadācit) - ever; ब्राह्मणर्षभान् (brāhmaṇaṛṣabhān) - the foremost among Brāhmaṇas; त्वत् (tvat) - your; निदेशे (nideśe) - at command; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - remaining; शश्वत् (śaśvat) - always; पुजयिष्यामि (pujayiṣyāmi) - I will honor; अहम् (aham) - I; द्विजान् (dvijān) - the twice-born;]
(I will not disrespect, O Brahman, ever the foremost among Brāhmaṇas; remaining at your command, I will always honor the twice-born.)
O Brahman, I will never disrespect the foremost among Brāhmaṇas; always, remaining under your command, I will honor the twice-born.
इक्ष्वाकूणां तु येनाहमनृणः स्यां द्विजोत्तम। तत्त्वत्तः प्राप्तुमिच्छामि वरं वेदविदां वर ॥१-१६८-११॥
ikṣvākūṇāṃ tu yenāham anṛṇaḥ syāṃ dvijottama। tattvattaḥ prāptum icchāmi varaṃ vedavidāṃ vara ॥1-168-11॥
[इक्ष्वाकूणाम् (ikṣvākūṇām) - of the Ikṣvāku-s; तु (tu) - but; येन (yena) - by which; अहम् (aham) - I; अनृणः (anṛṇaḥ) - free from debt; स्याम् (syām) - may become; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; तत् (tat) - that; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; प्राप्तुम् (prāptum) - to obtain; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; वरम् (varam) - boon; वेदविदाम् (vedavidām) - of the knowers of the Veda; वर (vara) - O best;]
(O best of Brāhmaṇas, but by which I may become free from debt to the Ikṣvāku-s, that boon I desire to obtain from you, O best of the knowers of the Veda.)
O best of Brāhmaṇas, I wish to obtain from you that boon by which I may be free from debt to the Ikṣvāku-s, O foremost among the knowers of the Veda.
अपत्यायेप्सितां मह्यं महिषीं गन्तुमर्हसि। शीलरूपगुणोपेतामिक्ष्वाकुकुलवृद्धये ॥१-१६८-१२॥
apatyāy-epsitāṃ mahyaṃ mahiṣīṃ gantum-arhasi | śīla-rūpa-guṇopetām ikṣvāku-kula-vṛddhaye ||1-168-12||
[अपत्याय (apatyāya) - for progeny; इप्सिताम् (ipsitām) - desired; महम् (mahyam) - to me; महिषीम् (mahiṣīm) - queen; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go (become); अर्हसि (arhasi) - you are worthy; शील (śīla) - character; रूप (rūpa) - form; गुण (guṇa) - qualities; उपेताम् (upetām) - endowed with; इक्ष्वाकु (ikṣvāku) - Ikshvaku; कुल (kula) - family; वृद्धये (vṛddhaye) - for the growth;]
(For progeny, the desired queen to me, to become you are worthy, endowed with character, form, and qualities, for the growth of the Ikshvaku family.)
You are worthy to become my desired queen for the sake of progeny, endowed with character, beauty, and virtues, for the growth of the Ikshvaku dynasty.
गन्धर्व उवाच॥

The gandharva said.
ददानीत्येव तं तत्र राजानं प्रत्युवाच ह। वसिष्ठः परमेष्वासं सत्यसन्धो द्विजोत्तमः ॥१-१६८-१३॥
dadānītyeva taṃ tatra rājānaṃ pratyuvāca ha। vasiṣṭhaḥ parameṣvāsaṃ satyasaṃdho dvijottamaḥ ॥1-168-13॥
[ददानीति (dadānīti) - I shall give; thus; एव (eva) - indeed; only; तम् (tam) - him; तत्र (tatra) - there; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; ह (ha) - indeed; वसिष्ठः (vasiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; परमेष्वासम् (parameṣvāsam) - supreme archer; सत्यसन्धः (satyasaṃdhaḥ) - truthful; द्विजोत्तमः (dvijottamaḥ) - best among the twice-born;]
("I shall give," thus indeed to him there, the king, replied indeed Vasiṣṭha, the supreme archer, truthful, best among the twice-born.)
Vasiṣṭha, the supreme archer, truthful and best among the twice-born, replied to the king there, saying, "I shall give."
ततः प्रतिययौ काले वसिष्ठसहितोऽनघ। ख्यातं पुरवरं लोकेष्वयोध्यां मनुजेश्वरः ॥१-१६८-१४॥
tataḥ pratiyayau kāle vasiṣṭhasahito' nagha। khyātaṃ puravaraṃ lokeṣvayodhyāṃ manujeśvaraḥ ॥1-168-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रतिययौ (pratiyayau) - departed towards; काले (kāle) - at the time; वसिष्ठसहितः (vasiṣṭhasahitaḥ) - together with Vasiṣṭha; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; ख्यातम् (khyātam) - well-known; पुरवरम् (puravaram) - excellent city; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - among the worlds; अयोध्याम् (ayodhyām) - Ayodhyā; मनुजेश्वरः (manujeśvaraḥ) - the lord of men;]
(Then, at the time, together with Vasiṣṭha, O sinless one, the lord of men departed towards the well-known excellent city Ayodhyā among the worlds.)
Then, O sinless one, the lord of men, accompanied by Vasiṣṭha, set out at the appointed time for Ayodhyā, the renowned and excellent city among all the worlds.
तं प्रजाः प्रतिमोदन्त्यः सर्वाः प्रत्युद्ययुस्तदा। विपाप्मानं महात्मानं दिवौकस इवेश्वरम् ॥१-१६८-१५॥
taṃ prajāḥ pratīmodantyaḥ sarvāḥ pratyudyayus tadā। vipāpmānaṃ mahātmānaṃ divaukasa iveśvaram ॥1-168-15॥

(Him the subjects, all rejoicing, then approached; the sinless, great-souled one, like the dwellers of heaven a lord.)
All the subjects, rejoicing, then approached him—the sinless, great-souled one—like the dwellers of heaven approach their lord.
अचिरात्स मनुष्येन्द्रो नगरीं पुण्यकर्मणाम्। विवेश सहितस्तेन वसिष्ठेन महात्मना ॥१-१६८-१६॥
acirāts manuṣyendro nagarīṃ puṇyakarmaṇām। viveśa sahitas tena vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā ॥1-168-16॥
[अचिरात् (acirāt) - soon; after a short time; सः (saḥ) - he; मनुष्येन्द्रः (manuṣyendraḥ) - king of men; नगरीम् (nagarīm) - city; पुण्यकर्मणाम् (puṇyakarmaṇām) - of those with virtuous deeds; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; तेन (tena) - with him; वसिष्ठेन (vasiṣṭhena) - with Vasiṣṭha; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - with the great-souled one;]
(Soon, he, the king of men, entered the city of those with virtuous deeds, together with him, with Vasiṣṭha, with the great-souled one.)
Soon after, the king entered the city of the virtuous, accompanied by the great sage Vasiṣṭha.
ददृशुस्तं ततो राजन्नयोध्यावासिनो जनाः। पुष्येण सहितं काले दिवाकरमिवोदितम् ॥१-१६८-१७॥
dadṛśus taṃ tato rājann ayodhyāvāsino janāḥ। puṣyeṇa sahitaṃ kāle divākaram ivoditam ॥1-168-17॥
[ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; तम् (tam) - him; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अयोध्या-वासिनः (ayodhyāvāsinaḥ) - Ayodhya-inhabitants; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; पुष्येण (puṣyeṇa) - with Puṣya (star); सहितम् (sahitam) - together; काले (kāle) - at the time; दिवाकरम् (divākaram) - the sun; इव (iva) - like; उदितम् (uditam) - risen;]
(They saw him then, O king, the people dwelling in Ayodhya, together with Puṣya at the time, like the sun risen.)
O king, then the people of Ayodhya saw him, who had appeared at the auspicious time with Puṣya, like the rising sun.
स हि तां पूरयामास लक्ष्म्या लक्ष्मीवतां वरः। अयोध्यां व्योम शीतांशुः शरत्काल इवोदितः ॥१-१६८-१८॥
sa hi tāṃ pūrayāmāsa lakṣmyā lakṣmīvatāṃ varaḥ। ayodhyāṃ vyoma śītāṃśuḥ śaratkāla iva uditaḥ॥1-168-18॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; तां (tāṃ) - her; पूरयामास (pūrayāmāsa) - filled; लक्ष्म्या (lakṣmyā) - with prosperity; लक्ष्मीवतां (lakṣmīvatāṃ) - of the prosperous; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; अयोध्यां (ayodhyāṃ) - Ayodhya; व्योम (vyoma) - sky; शीतांशुः (śītāṃśuḥ) - the cool-rayed (moon); शरत्काल (śaratkāla) - autumn season; इव (iva) - like; उदितः (uditaḥ) - risen;]
(He indeed filled her with prosperity, the best among the prosperous; like the cool-rayed moon risen in the sky, in the autumn season, (he filled) Ayodhya.)
He, the best among the prosperous, filled Ayodhya with prosperity, just as the cool-rayed moon rises in the sky during the autumn season.
संसिक्तमृष्टपन्थानं पताकोच्छ्रयभूषितम्। मनः प्रह्लादयामासा तस्य तत्पुरमुत्तमम् ॥१-१६८-१९॥
saṃsiktamṛṣṭapanthānaṃ patākocchrayabhūṣitam। manaḥ prahlādayāmāsā tasya tatpuramuttamam ॥1-168-19॥
[संसिक्त (saṃsikta) - sprinkled; मृष्ट (mṛṣṭa) - cleaned; पन्थानम् (panthānam) - path; पताक (patāka) - flag; उच्छ्रय (ucchraya) - raised; भूषितम् (bhūṣitam) - adorned; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; प्रह्लादयामासा (prahlādayāmāsā) - delighted; तस्य (tasya) - his; तत् (tat) - that; पुरम् (puram) - city; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent;]
(The path, sprinkled and cleaned, adorned with raised flags, delighted his mind; that excellent city (did so).)
