गन्धर्व उवाच॥

The gandharva said.
आश्रमस्था ततः पुत्रमदृश्यन्ती व्यजायत। शक्तेः कुलकरं राजन्द्वितीयमिव शक्तिनम् ॥१-१६९-१॥
āśramasthā tataḥ putram adṛśyantī vyajāyata. śakteḥ kulakaraṃ rājan dvitīyam iva śaktinam ॥1-169-1॥
[आश्रमस्था (āśramasthā) - residing in the hermitage; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; अदृश्यन्ती (adṛśyantī) - not being seen; व्यजायत (vyajāyata) - gave birth; शक्तेः (śakteḥ) - of Śakti; कुलकरम् (kulakaram) - upholder of the family; राजन् (rājan) - O king; द्वितीयम् (dvitīyam) - second; इव (iva) - like; शक्तिनम् (śaktinam) - Śaktiman (name);]
(Residing in the hermitage, then, not being seen, she gave birth to a son, O king, the upholder of Śakti's family, like a second Śaktiman.)
Then, while residing in the hermitage and unseen, she gave birth to a son, O king, who became the upholder of Śakti's lineage, like a second Śaktiman.
जातकर्मादिकास्तस्य क्रियाः स मुनिपुङ्गवः। पौत्रस्य भरतश्रेष्ठ चकार भगवान्स्वयम् ॥१-१६९-२॥
jātakarmādikās tasya kriyāḥ sa munipuṅgavaḥ। pautrasya bharataśreṣṭha cakāra bhagavān svayam ॥1-169-2॥
[जातकर्मादिकाः (jātakarmādikāḥ) - birth-rites and others; तस्य (tasya) - of him; क्रियाः (kriyāḥ) - rites; सः (saḥ) - he; मुनिपुङ्गवः (munipuṅgavaḥ) - the eminent sage; पौत्रस्य (pautrasya) - of the grandson; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; चकार (cakāra) - performed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself;]
(The eminent sage himself performed his birth-rites and other rites for the grandson, O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, the venerable sage himself performed all the birth and other rites for his grandson.
परासुश्च यतस्तेन वसिष्ठः स्थापितस्तदा। गर्भस्थेन ततो लोके पराशर इति स्मृतः ॥१-१६९-३॥
parāsuś ca yatās tena vasiṣṭhaḥ sthāpitās tadā। garbhasthena tato loke parāśara iti smṛtaḥ॥1-169-3॥
[परासुः (parāsuḥ) - in the weapons; च (ca) - and; यतः (yataḥ) - from whom; तेन (tena) - by him; वसिष्ठः (vasiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; स्थापितः (sthāpitaḥ) - was established; तदा (tadā) - then; गर्भस्थेन (garbhasthena) - by the one in the womb; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; लोके (loke) - in the world; पराशरः (parāśaraḥ) - Parāśara; इति (iti) - thus; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is remembered;]
(In the weapons and from whom, by him Vasiṣṭha was established then; by the one in the womb, thereafter in the world, Parāśara thus is remembered.)
Because of the weapons, by whom Vasiṣṭha was then established, and since he was in the womb, thereafter in the world he is remembered as Parāśara.
अमन्यत स धर्मात्मा वसिष्ठं पितरं तदा। जन्मप्रभृति तस्मिंश्च पितरीव व्यवर्तत ॥१-१६९-४॥
amanyata sa dharmātmā vasiṣṭhaṃ pitaraṃ tadā। janmaprabhṛti tasmiṃśca pitarīva vyavartata ॥1-169-4॥
[अमन्यत (amanyata) - he considered; he thought; he regarded; स (sa) - he; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; virtuous; वसिष्ठं (vasiṣṭham) - Vasiṣṭha (proper noun); पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; जन्मप्रभृति (janmaprabhṛti) - from birth onwards; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; च (ca) - and; पितरि (pitarī) - in the father; इव (iva) - like; as if; व्यवर्तत (vyavartata) - he behaved; he acted;]
(He considered Vasiṣṭha as his father then; from birth onwards, in him, he behaved just as (one does) towards a father.)
At that time, the righteous-souled one regarded Vasiṣṭha as his father; from birth onwards, he behaved towards him just as one would towards a father.
स तात इति विप्रर्षिं वसिष्ठं प्रत्यभाषत। मातुः समक्षं कौन्तेय अदृश्यन्त्याः परन्तप ॥१-१६९-५॥
sa tāta iti viprarṣiṃ vasiṣṭhaṃ pratyabhāṣata। mātuḥ samakṣaṃ kaunteya adṛśyantyāḥ parantapa ॥1-169-5॥
[स (sa) - he; तात (tāta) - father; (vocative) इति (iti) - thus; विप्रर्षिं (viprarṣiṃ) - sage among Brāhmaṇas; वसिष्ठं (vasiṣṭham) - Vasiṣṭha; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of the mother; समक्षं (samakṣam) - in the presence; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - son of Kunti; अदृश्यन्त्याः (adṛśyantyāḥ) - of Adṛśyantī; परन्तप (parantapa) - scorcher of foes;]
(He, saying 'O father', addressed the sage among Brāhmaṇas, Vasiṣṭha. In the presence of his mother, the son of Kunti, of Adṛśyantī, scorcher of foes.)
He then said, 'O father,' and addressed the sage Vasiṣṭha, the foremost among Brāhmaṇas. In the presence of his mother, the son of Kunti, Adṛśyantī's son, the subduer of enemies, spoke.
तातेति परिपूर्णार्थं तस्य तन्मधुरं वचः। अदृश्यन्त्यश्रुपूर्णाक्षी शृण्वन्ती तमुवाच ह ॥१-१६९-६॥
tāteti paripūrṇārthaṃ tasya tanmadhuraṃ vacaḥ। adṛśyantyaśrupūrṇākṣī śṛṇvantī tamuvāca ha ॥1-169-6॥
[तातेति (tāte iti) - O father thus; परिपूर्णार्थं (paripūrṇārtham) - with complete meaning; तस्य (tasya) - his; तन्मधुरं (tan-madhuram) - that sweet; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; अदृश्यन्ति (adṛśyanti) - not being seen; अश्रुपूर्णाक्षी (aśru-pūrṇa-akṣī) - with tear-filled eyes; शृण्वन्ती (śṛṇvantī) - listening; तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(O father thus, with complete meaning, his that sweet speech; not being seen, with tear-filled eyes, listening, to him she said indeed.)
Hearing his sweet and meaningful words addressed as 'O father', she, with eyes full of tears and not being seen, spoke to him while listening.
मा तात तात तातेति न ते तातो महामुनिः। रक्षसा भक्षितस्तात तव तातो वनान्तरे ॥१-१६९-७॥
mā tāta tāta tāteti na te tāto mahāmuniḥ। rakṣasā bhakṣitastāta tava tāto vanāntare॥1-169-7॥

Do not cry 'O dear, O dear, O dear!' Your father, the great sage, was eaten by the demon in the forest, O dear. Your father is gone.
मन्यसे यं तु तातेति नैष तातस्तवानघ। आर्यस्त्वेष पिता तस्य पितुस्तव महात्मनः ॥१-१६९-८॥
manyase yaṃ tu tāteti naiṣa tātastavānagha। āryastveṣa pitā tasya pitustava mahātmanaḥ॥1-169-8॥
[मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; यं (yaṃ) - whom; तु (tu) - but; तात (tāta) - father; इति (iti) - thus; न (na) - not; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; तातः (tātaḥ) - father; तव (tava) - your; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; आर्यः (āryaḥ) - noble one; तु (tu) - but; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; पिता (pitā) - father; तस्य (tasya) - of him; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; तव (tava) - your; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - O great-souled one;]
(You think whom, but, as 'father', thus, not, this, father, your, O sinless one; noble one, but, this, father, of him, of the father, your, O great-souled one.)
O sinless one, whom you think of as your father, he is not your father. This noble one is the father of him who was your father, O great-souled one.
स एवमुक्तो दुःखार्तः सत्यवागृषिसत्तमः। सर्वलोकविनाशाय मतिं चक्रे महामनाः ॥१-१६९-९॥
sa evam-ukto duḥkhārtaḥ satyavāg ṛṣisattamaḥ। sarvaloka-vināśāya matiṃ cakre mahāmanāḥ ॥1-169-9॥
[स (sa) - he; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; दुःखार्तः (duḥkhārtaḥ) - afflicted by sorrow; सत्यवाक् (satyavāk) - truth-speaking; ऋषिसत्तमः (ṛṣisattamaḥ) - best among sages; सर्वलोकविनाशाय (sarvaloka-vināśāya) - for the destruction of all worlds; मतिम् (matim) - mind; चक्रे (cakre) - made; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded;]
(He, thus addressed, afflicted by sorrow, the truth-speaking best among sages, for the destruction of all worlds, made up his mind, great-minded.)
Thus addressed, the great-minded sage, afflicted by sorrow and speaking the truth, resolved in his mind to bring about the destruction of all worlds.
तं तथा निश्चितात्मानं महात्मानं महातपाः। वसिष्ठो वारयामास हेतुना येन तच्छृणु ॥१-१६९-१०॥
taṃ tathā niścitātmānaṃ mahātmānaṃ mahātapāḥ। vasiṣṭho vārayāmāsa hetunā yena tacchṛṇu ॥1-169-10॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; तथा (tathā) - thus; निश्चितात्मानं (niścitātmānam) - one with resolved mind; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - great-souled; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - of great austerity; वसिष्ठः (vasiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; वारयामास (vārayāmāsa) - restrained; हेतुना (hetunā) - with a reason; येन (yena) - by which; तत् (tat) - that; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen;]
(Him, thus, with resolved mind, great-souled, of great austerity, Vasiṣṭha restrained with a reason; by which, that, listen.)
Vasiṣṭha, who was of great austerity, restrained him, who was thus resolute and great-souled, for a reason; listen to what that reason was.

Vasiṣṭha said.
कृतवीर्य इति ख्यातो बभूव नृपतिः क्षितौ। याज्यो वेदविदां लोके भृगूणां पार्थिवर्षभः ॥१-१६९-११॥
kṛtavīrya iti khyāto babhūva nṛpatiḥ kṣitau। yājyo vedavidāṃ loke bhṛgūṇāṃ pārthivarṣabhaḥ ॥1-169-11॥
[कृतवीर्य (kṛtavīrya) - Kṛtavīrya; (a proper name; literally: one whose valor is accomplished;) इति (iti) - thus; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - renowned; बभूव (babhūva) - became; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; क्षितौ (kṣitau) - on earth; याज्यः (yājyaḥ) - fit to be worshipped; वेदविदाम् (vedavidām) - of the knowers of the Veda; लोके (loke) - in the world; भृगूणाम् (bhṛgūṇām) - of the Bhṛgus; पार्थिवर्षभः (pārthivarṣabhaḥ) - the bull among kings;]
(Kṛtavīrya—thus renowned—became—king—on earth; fit to be worshipped—of the knowers of the Veda—in the world; of the Bhṛgus—the bull among kings.)
Kṛtavīrya, thus renowned, became a king on earth; he was fit to be worshipped by the knowers of the Veda in the world, and among the Bhṛgus, he was the foremost among kings.
स तानग्रभुजस्तात धान्येन च धनेन च। सोमान्ते तर्पयामास विपुलेन विशां पतिः ॥१-१६९-१२॥
sa tān agrabhujaḥ tāta dhānyena ca dhanena ca। somānte tarpayāmāsa vipulena viśāṃ patiḥ ॥1-169-12॥
[स (sa) - he; तान् (tān) - them; अग्रभुजः (agrabhujaḥ) - the foremost enjoyer; तात (tāta) - O dear one; धान्येन (dhānyena) - with grain; च (ca) - and; धनेन (dhanena) - with wealth; च (ca) - and; सोम-अन्ते (soma-ante) - at the end of the Soma (ritual); तर्पयामास (tarpayāmāsa) - satisfied; विपुलेन (vipulena) - with abundance; विशाम् (viśām) - of the people; पतिः (patiḥ) - the lord;]
(He, the foremost enjoyer, O dear one, with grain and with wealth, at the end of the Soma (ritual), satisfied them with abundance, the lord of the people.)
O dear one, at the end of the Soma ritual, the lord of the people, the foremost enjoyer, satisfied them with abundant grain and wealth.
तस्मिन्नृपतिशार्दूले स्वर्यातेऽथ कदाचन। बभूव तत्कुलेयानां द्रव्यकार्यमुपस्थितम् ॥१-१६९-१३॥
tasmin nṛpati-śārdūle svar yāte 'tha kadācana | babhūva tat-kuleyānāṃ dravya-kāryam upasthitam ||1-169-13||
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; नृपतिशार्दूले (nṛpati-śārdūle) - O tiger among kings; स्वर्याते (svar-yāte) - having ascended to heaven; अथ (atha) - then; कदाचन (kadācana) - at some time; बभूव (babhūva) - there was; तत्कुलेयानाम् (tat-kuleyānām) - of those belonging to that family; द्रव्यकार्यम् (dravya-kāryam) - a matter concerning wealth; उपस्थितम् (upasthitam) - arose;]
(In that (time), O tiger among kings, when (he) had ascended to heaven, then at some time, there was, of those belonging to that family, a matter concerning wealth that arose.)
O best of kings, after he had departed to heaven, at some point, a matter concerning wealth arose among the members of that family.
ते भृगूणां धनं ज्ञात्वा राजानः सर्व एव ह। याचिष्णवोऽभिजग्मुस्तांस्तात भार्गवसत्तमान् ॥१-१६९-१४॥
te bhṛgūṇāṃ dhanaṃ jñātvā rājānaḥ sarva eva ha। yāciṣṇavo'bhijagmustaṃstāta bhārgavasattamān ॥1-169-14॥
[ते (te) - they; भृगूणाम् (bhṛgūṇām) - of the Bhṛgus; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; सर्वे (sarve) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - certainly; याचिष्णवः (yāciṣṇavaḥ) - beggars; अभिजग्मुः (abhijagmuḥ) - approached; तान् (tān) - them; तात (tāta) - O dear; भार्गवसत्तमान् (bhārgavasattamān) - the best of the Bhārgavas;]
(They, having known the wealth of the Bhṛgus, all the kings indeed, certainly, beggars, approached them, O dear, the best of the Bhārgavas.)
O dear, all the kings, having learned of the wealth of the Bhṛgus, approached those best of the Bhārgavas as beggars.
भूमौ तु निदधुः केचिद्भृगवो धनमक्षयम्। ददुः केचिद्द्विजातिभ्यो ज्ञात्वा क्षत्रियतो भयम् ॥१-१६९-१५॥
bhūmau tu nidadhuḥ kecid bhṛgavo dhanam akṣayam। daduḥ kecid dvijātibhyo jñātvā kṣatriyato bhayam ॥1-169-15॥
[भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the earth; तु (tu) - but; निदधुः (nidadhuḥ) - placed; केचित् (kecit) - some; भृगवः (bhṛgavaḥ) - the Bhṛgus; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - imperishable; ददुः (daduḥ) - gave; केचित् (kecit) - some; द्विजातिभ्यः (dvijātibhyaḥ) - to the twice-born (Brāhmaṇas); ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; क्षत्रियतः (kṣatriyataḥ) - from the Kṣatriyas; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]
(But some of the Bhṛgus placed imperishable wealth on the earth; some gave (it) to the twice-born, having known fear from the Kṣatriyas.)
But some of the Bhṛgus placed imperishable wealth on the earth, while others, fearing the Kṣatriyas, gave it to the Brāhmaṇas.
भृगवस्तु ददुः केचित्तेषां वित्तं यथेप्सितम्। क्षत्रियाणां तदा तात कारणान्तरदर्शनात् ॥१-१६९-१६॥
bhṛgavastu daduḥ kecitteṣāṃ vittaṃ yathepsitam। kṣatriyāṇāṃ tadā tāta kāraṇāntaradarśanāt ॥1-169-16॥
[भृगवः (bhṛgavaḥ) - the Bhṛgus; (descendants of Bhṛgu); तु (tu) - but; however; ददुः (daduḥ) - gave; (they) gave; केचित् (kecit) - some; certain ones; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; their; वित्तम् (vittam) - wealth; property; यथ (yath) - as; according to; इप्सितम् (ipsitam) - desired; wished for; क्षत्रियाणाम् (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the Kṣatriyas; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; तात (tāta) - O dear one; father; कारणान्तरदर्शनात् (kāraṇāntaradarśanāt) - because of perceiving another reason; due to seeing another cause;]
(But the Bhṛgus gave some of their wealth as desired by the Kṣatriyas then, O dear one, because of perceiving another reason.)
O dear one, at that time, some of the Bhṛgus gave the Kṣatriyas as much wealth as they desired, because they saw another reason.
ततो महीतलं तात क्षत्रियेण यदृच्छया। खनताधिगतं वित्तं केनचिद्भृगुवेश्मनि ॥ तद्वित्तं ददृशुः सर्वे समेताः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥१-१६९-१७॥
tato mahītalaṃ tāta kṣatriyeṇa yadṛcchayā। khanatādhigataṃ vittaṃ kenacidbhṛguveśmani ॥ tadvittaṃ dadṛśuḥ sarve sametāḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ॥1-169-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; महीतलम् (mahītalam) - earth's surface; तात (tāta) - O dear; क्षत्रियेण (kṣatriyeṇa) - by a kṣatriya; यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - by chance; खनता (khanatā) - by digging; अधिगतं (adhigatam) - obtained; वित्तम् (vittam) - wealth; केनचित् (kenacit) - by someone; भृगुवेश्मनि (bhṛguveśmani) - in the house of Bhṛgu; तत् (tat) - that; वित्तम् (vittam) - wealth; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; सर्वे (sarve) - all; समेताः (sametāḥ) - assembled; क्षत्रियर्षभाः (kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ) - the foremost of kṣatriyas;]
(Then, O dear, on the earth's surface, by a kṣatriya, by chance, wealth obtained by digging by someone in the house of Bhṛgu—that wealth all the assembled foremost kṣatriyas saw.)
Then, O dear, on the earth's surface, a kṣatriya by chance discovered wealth by digging in the house of Bhṛgu; all the assembled foremost kṣatriyas saw that wealth.
अवमन्य ततः कोपाद्भृगूंस्ताञ्शरणागतान्। निजघ्नुस्ते महेष्वासाः सर्वांस्तान्निशितैः शरैः ॥ आ गर्भादनुकृन्तन्तश्चेरुश्चैव वसुन्धराम् ॥१-१६९-१८॥
avamanya tataḥ kopādbhṛgūṃstāñśaraṇāgatān। nijaghnuste maheṣvāsāḥ sarvāṃstāniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ॥ ā garbhādanukṛntantaśceruścaiva vasundharām ॥1-169-18॥
[अवमन्य (avamanya) - disregarding; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कोपात् (kopāt) - from anger; भृगून् (bhṛgūn) - the Bhṛgus; तान् (tān) - them; शरणागतान् (śaraṇāgatān) - who had sought refuge; निजघ्नुः (nijaghnuḥ) - they struck down; ते (te) - those; महेष्वासाः (maheṣvāsāḥ) - great archers; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; तान् (tān) - them; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - with sharp; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - arrows; आ (ā) - up to; गर्भात् (garbhāt) - from the womb; अनुकृन्तन्तः (anukṛntantaḥ) - cutting down; चेरुः (ceruḥ) - they moved; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वसुन्धराम् (vasundharām) - the earth;]
(Disregarding then, from anger, the Bhṛgus who had sought refuge, those great archers struck down all of them with sharp arrows. Up to (even) from the womb, cutting down, they moved indeed on the earth.)

तत उच्छिद्यमानेषु भृगुष्वेवं भयात्तदा। भृगुपत्न्यो गिरिं तात हिमवन्तं प्रपेदिरे ॥१-१६९-१९॥
tata ucchidyamāneṣu bhṛguṣvevaṃ bhayāttadā। bhṛgupatnyo giriṃ tāta himavantaṃ prapedire ॥1-169-19॥
[तत् (tat) - then; उच्छिद्यमानेषु (ucchidyamāneṣu) - while being destroyed; भृगुषु (bhṛguṣu) - among the Bhṛgus; एवम् (evam) - thus; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; तदा (tadā) - at that time; भृगुपत्न्यः (bhṛgupatnyaḥ) - the wives of Bhṛgu; गिरिम् (girim) - mountain; तात (tāta) - O dear one; हिमवन्तम् (himavantam) - Himavat (the Himalaya); प्रपेदिरे (prapedire) - reached;]
(Then, while the Bhṛgus were being destroyed thus, from fear at that time, the wives of Bhṛgu, O dear one, reached the Himavat mountain.)
O dear one, then, as the Bhṛgus were being destroyed in this way out of fear, the wives of Bhṛgu fled to the Himavat mountain.
तासामन्यतमा गर्भं भयाद्दाधार तैजसम्। ऊरुणैकेन वामोरूर्भर्तुः कुलविवृद्धये ॥ ददृशुर्ब्राह्मणीं तां ते दीप्यमानां स्वतेजसा ॥१-१६९-२०॥
tāsām anyatamā garbhaṃ bhayād dādhāra taijasam। ūruṇāikena vāma-ūrur bhartuḥ kula-vivṛddhaye॥ dadṛśur brāhmaṇīṃ tāṃ te dīpyamānāṃ sva-tejasā॥1-169-20॥
[तासाम् (tāsām) - of those (women); अन्यतमा (anyatamā) - one among; गर्भम् (garbham) - embryo; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; दाधार (dādhāra) - held; तैजसम् (taijasam) - radiant; ऊरुणा (ūruṇā) - by the thigh; एकेन (ekena) - by one; वाम (vāma) - left; ऊरुः (ūruḥ) - thigh; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the husband; कुलविवृद्धये (kula-vivṛddhaye) - for the increase of the lineage; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; ब्राह्मणीम् (brāhmaṇīm) - the Brāhmaṇa lady; ताम् (tām) - her; ते (te) - they; दीप्यमानाम् (dīpyamānām) - shining; स्वतेजसा (sva-tejasā) - with her own radiance;]
(Of those, one among them, from fear, held the radiant embryo by the left thigh, for the increase of the husband's lineage. They saw that Brāhmaṇa lady, shining with her own radiance.)

[अथ (atha) - then; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - embryo; सः (saḥ) - he; भित्त्वा (bhittvā) - having pierced; उरुं (uruṃ) - thigh; ब्राह्मण्या (brāhmaṇyā) - by the Brāhmaṇa woman; निर्जगाम (nirjagāma) - came out; ह (ha) - indeed; मुष्णन् (muṣṇan) - depriving; दृष्टीः (dṛṣṭīḥ) - sight; क्षत्रियाणां (kṣatriyāṇāṃ) - of the Kṣatriyas; मध्याह्न (madhyāhna) - midday; इव (iva) - like; भास्करः (bhāskaraḥ) - the sun; ततः (tataḥ) - then; चक्षुः-वियुक्ताः (cakṣur-viyuktāḥ) - deprived of sight; ते (te) - they; गिरि-दुर्गेषु (giri-durgeṣu) - in the mountain fastnesses; बभ्रमुः (babhramuḥ) - wandered; १-१६९-२१ (1-169-21) - 1-169-21;]
(Then the embryo, having pierced the thigh of the Brāhmaṇa woman, indeed came out, depriving the Kṣatriyas of sight, like the sun at midday. Then those deprived of sight wandered in the mountain fastnesses.)
Then the embryo pierced the Brāhmaṇa woman's thigh and emerged, blinding the Kṣatriyas like the midday sun. Those who lost their sight then wandered in the mountain caves.
ततस्ते मोघसङ्कल्पा भयार्ताः क्षत्रियर्षभाः। ब्रह्मणीं शरणं जग्मुर्दृष्ट्यर्थं तामनिन्दिताम् ॥१-१६९-२२॥
tataste moghasaṅkalpā bhayārtāḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ। brahmaṇīṃ śaraṇaṃ jagmurdṛṣṭyarthaṃ tāmaninditām ॥1-169-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; मोग्हसङ्कल्पाः (moghasaṅkalpāḥ) - with futile intentions; भयार्ताः (bhayārtāḥ) - afflicted by fear; क्षत्रियर्षभाः (kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among the Kṣatriyas; ब्रह्मणीम् (brahmaṇīm) - to the Brāhmaṇī (wife of a Brāhmaṇa); शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; दृष्ट्यर्थम् (dṛṣṭyartham) - for the purpose of seeing; ताम् (tām) - her; अनिन्दिताम् (aninditām) - blameless;]
(Then they, with futile intentions, afflicted by fear, bulls among the Kṣatriyas, went to the Brāhmaṇī for refuge, for the purpose of seeing her, the blameless one.)
Then those Kṣatriya chiefs, whose intentions had failed and who were overcome by fear, sought refuge with the Brāhmaṇī, wishing to see her, the blameless one.
ऊचुश्चैनां महाभागां क्षत्रियास्ते विचेतसः। ज्योतिःप्रहीणा दुःखार्ताः शान्तार्चिष इवाग्नयः ॥१-१६९-२३॥
ūcuś caināṃ mahābhāgāṃ kṣatriyās te vicetasaḥ। jyotiḥ-prahīṇā duḥkhārtāḥ śāntārciṣa ivāgnayaḥ॥1-169-23॥
[ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - they said; च (ca) - and; एनाम् (enām) - to her; महाभागाम् (mahābhāgām) - greatly fortunate; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - the kṣatriyas; ते (te) - they; विचेतसः (vicetasaḥ) - bewildered; ज्योतिःप्रहीणाः (jyotiḥ-prahīṇāḥ) - bereft of brilliance; दुःखार्ताः (duḥkhārtāḥ) - afflicted with sorrow; शान्तार्चिषः (śāntārciṣaḥ) - with extinguished flames; इव (iva) - like; अग्नयः (agnayaḥ) - fires;]
(They said to her, the greatly fortunate one; the kṣatriyas, bewildered, bereft of brilliance, afflicted with sorrow, like fires with extinguished flames.)
The kṣatriyas, bewildered and afflicted by sorrow, spoke to her, the greatly fortunate one, appearing like fires whose flames have been extinguished.
भगवत्याः प्रसादेन गच्छेत्क्षत्रं सचक्षुषम्। उपारम्य च गच्छेम सहिताः पापकर्मणः ॥१-१६९-२४॥
bhagavatyāḥ prasādena gacchet kṣatraṃ sacakṣuṣam। upāramya ca gacchema sahitāḥ pāpakarmaṇaḥ ॥1-169-24॥

(By the grace of the divine lady, one should go to the kṣatriya order with sight. Having ceased, and let us go together from evil deeds.)

सपुत्रा त्वं प्रसादं नः सर्वेषां कर्तुमर्हसि। पुनर्दृष्टिप्रदानेन राज्ञः सन्त्रातुमर्हसि ॥१-१६९-२५॥
saputrā tvaṃ prasādaṃ naḥ sarveṣāṃ kartum arhasi। punardṛṣṭipradānena rājñaḥ santrātum arhasi ॥1-169-25॥
[सपुत्रा (saputrā) - with sons; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; प्रसादं (prasādam) - favor; नः (naḥ) - to us; सर्वेषां (sarveṣām) - of all; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you are worthy; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; दृष्टि (dṛṣṭi) - sight; प्रदानेन (pradānena) - by granting; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; सन्त्रातुम् (santrātum) - to protect; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you are worthy;]
(With sons, you are worthy to grant favor to us all. By granting sight again, you are worthy to protect the king.)
You, along with your sons, are worthy of granting favor to all of us. By restoring sight again, you are worthy to protect the king.
