Pancharatra: Pandavas obtain Devala's son Daumya as preceptor

अस्माकमनुरूपो वै यः स्याद्गन्धर्व वेदवित्। पुरोहितस्तमाचक्ष्व सर्वं हि विदितं तव ॥१-१७४-१॥
asmākam-anurūpo vai yaḥ syād-gandharva vedavit। purohitas-tam-ācakṣva sarvaṃ hi viditaṃ tava ॥1-174-1॥

Tell us who among the Gandharvas, who is suitable and a knower of the Veda, can be our priest, for everything is known to you.

यवीयान्देवलस्यैष वने भ्राता तपस्यति। धौम्य उत्कोचके तीर्थे तं वृणुध्वं यदीच्छथ ॥१-१७४-२॥
yavīyān devalasya eṣa vane bhrātā tapasyati। dhaumya utkochake tīrthe taṃ vṛṇudhvaṃ yadīcchatha ॥1-174-2॥

tato'rjuno'stramāgneyaṃ pradadau tadyathāvidhi। gandharvāya tadā prīto vacanaṃ cedamabravīt ॥1-174-3॥

te'anyonya-m-abhisampūjya gandharvaḥ pāṇḍavāś ca ha। ramyād bhāgīrathī-kacchād yathākāmaṃ pratasthire॥1-174-5॥

(They, having duly honored each other, the Gandharva and the Pāṇḍavas indeed, from the delightful bank of the Bhāgīrathī, set out as they wished.)
After mutually honoring each other, the Gandharva and the Pāṇḍavas departed from the beautiful bank of the Bhāgīrathī as they desired.
तत उत्कोचकं तीर्थं गत्वा धौम्याश्रमं तु ते। तं वव्रुः पाण्डवा धौम्यं पौरोहित्याय भारत ॥१-१७४-६॥
tat utkōcakaṃ tīrthaṃ gatvā dhaumyāśramaṃ tu te। taṃ vavruḥ pāṇḍavā dhaumyaṃ paurohityāya bhārata ॥1-174-6॥
[तत् (tat) - then; उत्कोचकं (utkōcakaṃ) - Utkochaka (name of a place); तीर्थं (tīrtham) - sacred place; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; धौम्याश्रमं (dhaumyāśramam) - Dhaumya's hermitage; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; तं (tam) - him; वव्रुः (vavruḥ) - chose; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; धौम्यं (dhaumyam) - Dhaumya; पौरोहित्याय (paurohityāya) - for priesthood; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then, having gone to the sacred place Utkochaka, they (the Pāṇḍavas) went to Dhaumya's hermitage. They chose Dhaumya for priesthood, O Bhārata.)
Then the Pāṇḍavas, having gone to the sacred place called Utkochaka, proceeded to the hermitage of Dhaumya. There, O Bhārata, they chose Dhaumya to be their priest.
तान्धौम्यः प्रतिजग्राह सर्ववेदविदां वरः। पाद्येन फलमूलेन पौरोहित्येन चैव ह ॥१-१७४-७॥
tāndhaumyaḥ pratijagrāha sarvavedavidāṃ varaḥ। pādyena phalamūlena paurohityena caiva ha ॥1-174-7॥

(Dhaumya, the best among all knowers of the Vedas, accepted them with water for washing feet, with fruits and roots, and with the priestly office indeed certainly.)
Dhaumya, foremost among all Vedic scholars, received them with due rites: offering water for their feet, fruits and roots, and by performing priestly duties.
ते तदाशंसिरे लब्धां श्रियं राज्यं च पाण्डवाः। तं ब्राह्मणं पुरस्कृत्य पाञ्चाल्याश्च स्वयंवरम् ॥१-१७४-८॥
te tadāśaṃsire labdhāṃ śriyaṃ rājyaṃ ca pāṇḍavāḥ। taṃ brāhmaṇaṃ puraskṛtya pāñcālyāś ca svayaṃvaram ॥1-174-8॥

(They then hoped for the obtained prosperity and kingdom, the Pāṇḍavas; having placed that Brāhmaṇa at the front, and the self-choice ceremony of Pāñcālī.)
At that time, the Pāṇḍavas hoped for the prosperity and kingdom they had gained; having the Brāhmaṇa lead them, they, along with Pāñcālī, proceeded to the self-choice ceremony.
मातृषष्ठास्तु ते तेन गुरुणा सङ्गतास्तदा। नाथवन्तमिवात्मानं मेनिरे भरतर्षभाः ॥१-१७४-९॥
mātṛṣaṣṭhāstu te tena guruṇā saṅgatāstadā। nāthavantamivātmānaṃ menire bharatarṣabhāḥ ॥1-174-9॥
[मातृषष्ठाः (mātṛṣaṣṭhāḥ) - having the same mother; six; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; तेन (tena) - by him; गुरुणा (guruṇā) - by the preceptor; सङ्गताः (saṅgatāḥ) - united; तदा (tadā) - then; नाथवन्तम् (nāthavantam) - having a protector; इव (iva) - like; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - themselves; मेनिरे (menire) - they considered; भरतर्षभाः (bharatarṣabhāḥ) - the best of the Bharatas;]
(But those six born of the same mother, then united by that preceptor, considered themselves as if having a protector, O best of the Bharatas.)

स हि वेदार्थतत्त्वज्ञस्तेषां गुरुरुदारधीः। तेन धर्मविदा पार्था याज्याः सर्वविदा कृताः ॥१-१७४-१०॥
sa hi vedārthatattvajñasteṣāṃ gururudāradhīḥ। tena dharmavidā pārthā yājyāḥ sarvavidā kṛtāḥ ॥1-174-10॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; वेदार्थतत्त्वज्ञः (vedārthatattvajñaḥ) - knower of the true essence of the meaning of the Vedas; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; उदारधीः (udāradhīḥ) - of noble intellect; तेन (tena) - by him; धर्मविदा (dharmavidā) - by the knower of dharma; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - O sons of Pṛthā; याज्याः (yājyāḥ) - fit to be sacrificed (worthy of being worshipped); सर्वविदा (sarvavidā) - by the knower of all; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - made (considered as such);]
(He indeed, the knower of the true essence of the meaning of the Vedas, their teacher of noble intellect; by him, the knower of dharma, O sons of Pṛthā, you were made worthy of sacrifice by the knower of all.)
He, who knows the true essence of the Vedas and is their noble-minded teacher, has, by his knowledge of dharma, made you, O sons of Pṛthā, worthy of being offered in sacrifice by one who knows everything.
वीरांस्तु स हि तान्मेने प्राप्तराज्यान्स्वधर्मतः। बुद्धिवीर्यबलोत्साहैर्युक्तान्देवानिवापरान् ॥१-१७४-११॥
vīrāṃs tu sa hi tān mene prāptarājyān svadharmataḥ। buddhivīryabalotsāhair yuktān devān ivāparān ॥1-174-11॥
[वीरान् (vīrān) - heroes; तु (tu) - but; सः (saḥ) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; तान् (tān) - them; मेने (mene) - considered; प्राप्तराज्यान् (prāptarājyān) - those who have obtained kingdoms; स्वधर्मतः (svadharmataḥ) - according to their own duty; बुद्धि (buddhi) - intellect; वीर्य (vīrya) - strength; बल (bala) - power; उत्साहैः (utsāhaiḥ) - with enthusiasm; युक्तान् (yuktān) - endowed; देवान् (devān) - gods; इव (iva) - like; अपरान् (aparān) - others;]
(But he indeed considered those heroes, who had obtained kingdoms according to their own duty, endowed with intellect, strength, power, and enthusiasm, as others like gods.)
But he regarded those heroes, who had rightfully attained their kingdoms and were endowed with intellect, strength, power, and enthusiasm, as being like other gods.
कृतस्वस्त्ययनास्तेन ततस्ते मनुजाधिपाः। मेनिरे सहिता गन्तुं पाञ्चाल्यास्तं स्वयंवरम् ॥१-१७४-१२॥
kṛtasvastyayanāstena tataste manujādhipāḥ। menire sahitā gantuṃ pāñcālyāstaṃ svayaṃvaram ॥1-174-12॥
[कृत (kṛta) - performed; done; स्वस्त्ययनाः (svastyayanāḥ) - auspicious rites; तेन (tena) - by him; ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; ते (te) - they; मनुजाधिपाः (manujādhipāḥ) - kings of men; मेनिरे (menire) - considered; thought; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; united; गन्तुम् (gantuṃ) - to go; पाञ्चाल्याः (pāñcālyāḥ) - of Pāñcālī (Draupadī); तं (taṃ) - that; स्वयंवरम् (svayaṃvaram) - self-choice ceremony;]
(Having performed auspicious rites by him, then those kings of men, together, considered to go to that self-choice ceremony of Pāñcālī.)
After he had performed the auspicious rites, the kings of men then decided together to go to the self-choice ceremony of Pāñcālī (Draupadī).
