Core: Pandavas join the group of Brahmana's travelling, wishing to attend Drupada's swayamwara.
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
tataste naraśārdūlā bhrātaraḥ pañca pāṇḍavāḥ। prayayur draupadīṃ draṣṭuṃ taṃ ca devamahotsavam ॥1-175-1॥
Then the five Pāṇḍava brothers, tigers among men, went to see Draupadī and the divine festival.
te prayātā naravyāghrā mātrā saha parantapāḥ। brāhmaṇān dadṛśur mārge gacchataḥ sagaṇān bahūn ॥1-175-2॥
The princes, tigers among men, departed with their mother. On the road, they saw many Brāhmaṇas going in groups.
tānūcurbrāhmaṇā rājanpāṇḍavānbrahmacāriṇaḥ। kva bhavanto gamiṣyanti kuto vāgacchateti ha ॥1-175-3॥
The Brāhmaṇas, O king, said to the Pāṇḍavas, who were celibate students: "Where are you going, or from where have you come?"
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca॥
Yudhiṣṭhira said.
āgatānekacakrāyāḥ sodaryān devadarśinaḥ। bhavanto hi vijānantu sahitān mātṛcāriṇaḥ॥1-175-4॥
O Devadarśin, you should know that the many uterine brothers of Cakrā who have arrived are those who live together with their mother.
brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ॥
The brāhmaṇas said.
gacchatādyaiva pāñcālāndrupadasya niveśanam। svayaṃvaro mahāṃstatra bhavitā sumahādhanaḥ ॥1-175-5॥
Let him go today itself to the palace of Drupada, king of the Pāñcālas. There will be a grand svayaṃvara, a ceremony of great wealth.
ekasārthaṃ prayātāḥ smo vayamapyatra gāminaḥ। tatra hyadbhutasaṅkāśo bhavitā sumahotsavaḥ ॥1-175-6॥
We have set out together as one caravan; we too are travellers here. There, indeed, a very great and wondrous festival will take place.
yajñasenasya duhitā drupadasya mahātmanaḥ। vedīmadhyātsamutpannā padmapatranibhekṣaṇā ॥1-175-7॥
The daughter of Yajñasena, Drupada's great-souled child, was born from the center of the altar, her eyes resembling lotus petals.
darśanīyānavadyāṅgī sukumārī manasvinī। dhṛṣṭadyumnasya bhaginī droṇaśatroḥ pratāpinaḥ ॥1-175-8॥
She was beautiful, flawless in form, delicate and noble-minded, the sister of Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the illustrious enemy of Droṇa.
yo jātaḥ kavacī khaḍgī saśaraḥ saśarāsanaḥ। susamiddhe mahābāhuḥ pāvake pāvakaprabhaḥ ॥1-175-9॥
He who is born, armored and bearing a sword, equipped with arrows and a bow, mighty-armed, in the well-kindled fire, having the radiance of fire.
svasā tasyānavadyāṅgī draupadī tanumadhyamā। nīlotpalasamo gandho yasyāḥ krośāt pravāyati ॥1-175-10॥
His sister Draupadī, who had flawless limbs and a slender waist, possessed a fragrance like that of a blue lotus, which could be sensed from a krośa away.
tāṃ yajñasenasya sutāṃ svayaṃvarakṛtakṣaṇām। gacchāmahe vayaṃ draṣṭuṃ taṃ ca devamahotsavam ॥1-175-11॥
We are going to see her, the daughter of Yajñasena, for whom the time for the svayaṃvara has been fixed, and also to witness that divine great festival.
rājāno rājaputrāś ca yajvāno bhūridakṣiṇāḥ। svādhyāyavantaḥ śucayo mahātmāno yatavratāḥ ॥1-175-12॥
Kings, princes, sacrificers who give abundant gifts, those devoted to self-study, pure and great-souled, steadfast in their vows.
taruṇā darśanīyāś ca nānādeśasamāgatāḥ। mahārathāḥ kṛtāstrāś ca samupaiṣyanti bhūmipāḥ॥1-175-13॥
Young and handsome kings, great chariot-warriors trained in weapons, assembled from various regions, will approach.
te tatra vividhān dāyān vijayārthaṃ nareśvarāḥ। pradāsyanti dhanaṃ gāś ca bhakṣyaṃ bhojyaṃ ca sarvaśaḥ॥1-175-14॥
There, the kings will give various gifts for the sake of victory—wealth, cows, and all kinds of food and enjoyments.
pratigṛhya ca tatsarvaṃ dṛṣṭvā caiva svayaṃvaram। anubhūyotsavaṃ caiva gamiṣyāmo yathepsitam ॥1-175-15॥
After accepting everything and witnessing the svayamvara, and after enjoying the festival, we shall depart as we wish.
naṭā vaitālikāścaiva nartakāḥ sūtamāgadhāḥ। niyodhakāśca deśebhyaḥ sameṣyanti mahābalāḥ ॥1-175-16॥
Actors, bards, dancers, charioteers, panegyrists, wrestlers, and mighty men from various regions will gather together.
evaṃ kautūhalaṃ kṛtvā dṛṣṭvā ca pratigṛhya ca। sahāsmābhirmahātmānaḥ punaḥ pratinivartsyatha ॥1-175-17॥
Thus, after satisfying your curiosity, seeing and receiving (what you wish), you great souls will return together with us again.
darśanīyāṃś ca vaḥ sarvān devarūpān avasthitān। samīkṣya kṛṣṇā varayet saṅgaty anyatamaṃ varam ॥1-175-18॥
And after observing all of you, who are present and godlike in appearance, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) should select any one suitable husband.
ayaṃ bhrātā tava śrīmāndarśanīyo mahābhujaḥ। niyudhyamāno vijayetsaṅgatyā draviṇaṃ bahu ॥1-175-19॥
This brother of yours, who is prosperous, handsome, and mighty-armed, may, by fighting with allies, win much wealth.
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca॥
Yudhiṣṭhira said.
paramaṃ bho gamiṣyāmo draṣṭuṃ devamahotsavam। bhavadbhiḥ sahitāḥ sarve kanyāyāstaṃ svayaṃvaram ॥1-175-20॥
O noble one, let us all go together with you to witness the divine festival, that is the maiden's svayaṃvara (self-choice ceremony).
