वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
ततस्ते नरशार्दूला भ्रातरः पञ्च पाण्डवाः। प्रययुर्द्रौपदीं द्रष्टुं तं च देवमहोत्सवम् ॥१-१७५-१॥
Then the five Pāṇḍava brothers, tigers among men, went to see Draupadī and the divine festival.
ते प्रयाता नरव्याघ्रा मात्रा सह परन्तपाः। ब्राह्मणान्ददृशुर्मार्गे गच्छतः सगणान्बहून् ॥१-१७५-२॥
The princes, tigers among men, departed with their mother. On the road, they saw many Brāhmaṇas going in groups.
तानूचुर्ब्राह्मणा राजन्पाण्डवान्ब्रह्मचारिणः। क्व भवन्तो गमिष्यन्ति कुतो वागच्छतेति ह ॥१-१७५-३॥
The Brāhmaṇas, O king, said to the Pāṇḍavas, who were celibate students: "Where are you going, or from where have you come?"
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhiṣṭhira said.
आगतानेकचक्रायाः सोदर्यान्देवदर्शिनः। भवन्तो हि विजानन्तु सहितान्मातृचारिणः ॥१-१७५-४॥
O Devadarśin, you should know that the many uterine brothers of Cakrā who have arrived are those who live together with their mother.
ब्राह्मणा ऊचुः॥
The brāhmaṇas said.
गच्छताद्यैव पाञ्चालान्द्रुपदस्य निवेशनम्। स्वयंवरो महांस्तत्र भविता सुमहाधनः ॥१-१७५-५॥
Let him go today itself to the palace of Drupada, king of the Pāñcālas. There will be a grand svayaṃvara, a ceremony of great wealth.
एकसार्थं प्रयाताः स्मो वयमप्यत्र गामिनः। तत्र ह्यद्भुतसङ्काशो भविता सुमहोत्सवः ॥१-१७५-६॥
We have set out together as one caravan; we too are travellers here. There, indeed, a very great and wondrous festival will take place.
यज्ञसेनस्य दुहिता द्रुपदस्य महात्मनः। वेदीमध्यात्समुत्पन्ना पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणा ॥१-१७५-७॥
The daughter of Yajñasena, Drupada's great-souled child, was born from the center of the altar, her eyes resembling lotus petals.
दर्शनीयानवद्याङ्गी सुकुमारी मनस्विनी। धृष्टद्युम्नस्य भगिनी द्रोणशत्रोः प्रतापिनः ॥१-१७५-८॥
She was beautiful, flawless in form, delicate and noble-minded, the sister of Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the illustrious enemy of Droṇa.
यो जातः कवची खड्गी सशरः सशरासनः। सुसमिद्धे महाबाहुः पावके पावकप्रभः ॥१-१७५-९॥
He who is born, armored and bearing a sword, equipped with arrows and a bow, mighty-armed, in the well-kindled fire, having the radiance of fire.
स्वसा तस्यानवद्याङ्गी द्रौपदी तनुमध्यमा। नीलोत्पलसमो गन्धो यस्याः क्रोशात्प्रवायति ॥१-१७५-१०॥
His sister Draupadī, who had flawless limbs and a slender waist, possessed a fragrance like that of a blue lotus, which could be sensed from a krośa away.
तां यज्ञसेनस्य सुतां स्वयंवरकृतक्षणाम्। गच्छामहे वयं द्रष्टुं तं च देवमहोत्सवम् ॥१-१७५-११॥
We are going to see her, the daughter of Yajñasena, for whom the time for the svayaṃvara has been fixed, and also to witness that divine great festival.
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च यज्वानो भूरिदक्षिणाः। स्वाध्यायवन्तः शुचयो महात्मानो यतव्रताः ॥१-१७५-१२॥
Kings, princes, sacrificers who give abundant gifts, those devoted to self-study, pure and great-souled, steadfast in their vows.
तरुणा दर्शनीयाश्च नानादेशसमागताः। महारथाः कृतास्त्राश्च समुपैष्यन्ति भूमिपाः ॥१-१७५-१३॥
Young and handsome kings, great chariot-warriors trained in weapons, assembled from various regions, will approach.
ते तत्र विविधान्दायान्विजयार्थं नरेश्वराः। प्रदास्यन्ति धनं गाश्च भक्ष्यं भोज्यं च सर्वशः ॥१-१७५-१४॥
There, the kings will give various gifts for the sake of victory—wealth, cows, and all kinds of food and enjoyments.
प्रतिगृह्य च तत्सर्वं दृष्ट्वा चैव स्वयंवरम्। अनुभूयोत्सवं चैव गमिष्यामो यथेप्सितम् ॥१-१७५-१५॥
After accepting everything and witnessing the svayamvara, and after enjoying the festival, we shall depart as we wish.
नटा वैतालिकाश्चैव नर्तकाः सूतमागधाः। नियोधकाश्च देशेभ्यः समेष्यन्ति महाबलाः ॥१-१७५-१६॥
Actors, bards, dancers, charioteers, panegyrists, wrestlers, and mighty men from various regions will gather together.
एवं कौतूहलं कृत्वा दृष्ट्वा च प्रतिगृह्य च। सहास्माभिर्महात्मानः पुनः प्रतिनिवर्त्स्यथ ॥१-१७५-१७॥
Thus, after satisfying your curiosity, seeing and receiving (what you wish), you great souls will return together with us again.
दर्शनीयांश्च वः सर्वान्देवरूपानवस्थितान्। समीक्ष्य कृष्णा वरयेत्सङ्गत्यान्यतमं वरम् ॥१-१७५-१८॥
And after observing all of you, who are present and godlike in appearance, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) should select any one suitable husband.
अयं भ्राता तव श्रीमान्दर्शनीयो महाभुजः। नियुध्यमानो विजयेत्सङ्गत्या द्रविणं बहु ॥१-१७५-१९॥
This brother of yours, who is prosperous, handsome, and mighty-armed, may, by fighting with allies, win much wealth.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhiṣṭhira said.
परमं भो गमिष्यामो द्रष्टुं देवमहोत्सवम्। भवद्भिः सहिताः सर्वे कन्यायास्तं स्वयंवरम् ॥१-१७५-२०॥
O noble one, let us all go together with you to witness the divine festival, that is the maiden's svayaṃvara (self-choice ceremony).
