yadā nivṛttā rājāno dhanuṣaḥ sajyakarmaṇi। athodatistiṣṭadviprāṇāṃ madhyājjiṣṇurudāradhīḥ ॥1-179-1॥

(When the kings had withdrawn from the act of stringing the bow, then from the midst of the Brāhmaṇas arose the victorious one of noble intellect.)
When the kings withdrew from the contest of stringing the bow, then from among the Brāhmaṇas, the noble-minded and victorious one arose.
उदक्रोशन्विप्रमुख्या विधुन्वन्तोऽजिनानि च। दृष्ट्वा सम्प्रस्थितं पार्थमिन्द्रकेतुसमप्रभम् ॥१-१७९-२॥

यत्कर्णशल्यप्रमुखैः पार्थिवैर्लोकविश्रुतैः। नानतं बलवद्भिर्हि धनुर्वेदपरायणैः ॥१-१७९-४॥
yat-karṇa-śalya-pramukhaiḥ pārthivair loka-viśrutaiḥ। nānataṃ balavadbhiḥ hi dhanurveda-parāyaṇaiḥ ॥1-179-4॥

(Which, by kings headed by Karna and Śalya, renowned in the world, not unbent indeed by the strong devoted to the science of archery.)
That bow, which even kings like Karna and Śalya, famed throughout the world and mighty warriors devoted to the science of archery, could not bend.
तत्कथं त्वकृतास्त्रेण प्राणतो दुर्बलीयसा। बटुमात्रेण शक्यं हि सज्यं कर्तुं धनुर्द्विजाः ॥१-१७९-५॥
tatkathaṃ tvakṛtāstreṇa prāṇato durbalīyasā| baṭumātreṇa śakyaṃ hi sajyaṃ kartuṃ dhanurdvijāḥ ॥1-179-5॥

(That how by you, by one unskilled in weapons, by one living, by one weaker, by one who is merely a boy, is it possible indeed to string to do the bow, O twice-born?)
So how, O Brāhmaṇas, could it be possible for you, unskilled in weapons, alive, weak, and merely a boy, to string the bow?
अवहास्या भविष्यन्ति ब्राह्मणाः सर्वराजसु। कर्मण्यस्मिन्नसंसिद्धे चापलादपरीक्षिते ॥१-१७९-६॥
avahāsyā bhaviṣyanti brāhmaṇāḥ sarva-rājasu। karmaṇy-asmin na saṃsiddhe cāpalād aparīkṣite ॥1-179-6॥

(Brāhmaṇas will become worthy of ridicule among all kings, in this action not accomplished and unexamined due to impulsiveness.)

यद्येष दर्पाद्धर्षाद्वा यदि वा ब्रह्मचापलात्। प्रस्थितो धनुरायन्तुं वार्यतां साधु मा गमत् ॥१-१७९-७॥
yadyeṣa darpāddharṣādvā yadi vā brahmacāpalāt। prasthito dhanurāyantuṃ vāryatāṃ sādhu mā gamat ॥1-179-7॥

(If this (person), from pride or from arrogance or from brahminical recklessness, has set out to stretch the bow, let him be restrained, O good one, let him not go.)
If this person, whether out of pride, arrogance, or brahminical recklessness, has set out to string the bow, restrain him, O noble one; do not let him proceed.
नावहास्या भविष्यामो न च लाघवमास्थिताः। न च विद्विष्टतां लोके गमिष्यामो महीक्षिताम् ॥१-१७९-८॥
nāvahāsyā bhaviṣyāmo na ca lāghavam āsthitāḥ। na ca vidviṣṭatāṃ loke gamiṣyāmo mahīkṣitām ॥1-179-8॥

(We shall not become those to be laughed at, nor shall we engage in triviality; nor shall we attain the state of being hated among kings in the world.)
We will not become objects of ridicule, nor will we resort to triviality; nor will we come to be hated among the kings of the world.
केचिदाहुर्युवा श्रीमान्नागराजकरोपमः। पीनस्कन्धोरुबाहुश्च धैर्येण हिमवानिव ॥१-१७९-९॥
kecid āhur yuvā śrīmān nāgarāja-karopamaḥ। pīna-skandha-uru-bāhuś ca dhairyeṇa himavān iva ॥1-179-9॥

(Some said, "A young man, prosperous, like the hand of the serpent king, with thick shoulders and broad arms, and in fortitude like the Himalaya.")

सम्भाव्यमस्मिन्कर्मेदमुत्साहाच्चानुमीयते। शक्तिरस्य महोत्साहा न ह्यशक्तः स्वयं व्रजेत् ॥१-१७९-१०॥
sambhāvyam asmin karma idam utsāhāt ca anumīyate। śaktiḥ asya mahat utsāhaḥ na hi aśaktaḥ svayam vrajet ॥1-179-10॥

न च तद्विद्यते किञ्चित्कर्म लोकेषु यद्भवेत्। ब्राह्मणानामसाध्यं च त्रिषु संस्थानचारिषु ॥१-१७९-११॥
na ca tad vidyate kiñcit karma lokeṣu yad bhavet। brāhmaṇānām asādhyaṃ ca triṣu saṃsthānacāriṣu ॥1-179-11॥

(And there does not exist any action in the worlds which might be impossible for the Brāhmaṇas, even among those who perform the three rites.)
There is no action in the worlds that is impossible for Brāhmaṇas, even among those who perform the three sacred rites.
अब्भक्षा वायुभक्षाश्च फलाहारा दृढव्रताः। दुर्बला हि बलीयांसो विप्रा हि ब्रह्मतेजसा ॥१-१७९-१२॥
abbhakṣā vāyubhakṣāś ca phalāhārā dṛḍhavratāḥ। durbalā hi balīyāṃso viprā hi brahmatejasā ॥1-179-12॥
[अब्भक्षा (abbhakṣāḥ) - those who eat water only; वायुभक्षाः (vāyubhakṣāḥ) - those who subsist on air; च (ca) - and; फलाहाराः (phalāhārāḥ) - those who eat fruits; दृढव्रताः (dṛḍhavratāḥ) - firm in vows; दुर्बलाः (durbalāḥ) - weak; हि (hi) - indeed; बलीयांसः (balīyāṃsaḥ) - stronger; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; हि (hi) - indeed; ब्रह्मतेजसा (brahmatejasā) - by the power of Brahman;]
(Those who eat water only, those who subsist on air, those who eat fruits, firm in vows, though weak, indeed, are stronger Brāhmaṇas, indeed, by the power of Brahman.)
Those Brāhmaṇas who eat only water, subsist on air, or live on fruits, and are firm in their vows, though physically weak, are indeed stronger by the power of Brahman.
ब्राह्मणो नावमन्तव्यः सद्वासद्वा समाचरन्। सुखं दुःखं महद्ध्रस्वं कर्म यत्समुपागतम् ॥१-१७९-१३॥
brāhmaṇo nāvamantavyaḥ sadvā sadvā samācaran। sukhaṃ duḥkhaṃ mahaddhrasvaṃ karma yat samupāgatam ॥1-179-13॥
[ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a Brāhmaṇa; न (na) - not; अवमन्तव्यः (avamantavyaḥ) - to be despised; सद्वा (sad vā) - good or; असद्वा (asad vā) - bad or; समाचरन् (samācaran) - acting; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; महत् (mahat) - great; ह्रस्वम् (hrasvam) - small; कर्म (karma) - action; यत् (yat) - which; समुपागतम् (samupāgatam) - has come;]
(A Brāhmaṇa is not to be despised, whether acting rightly or wrongly. Happiness, sorrow, great or small action, whatever has come.)
A Brāhmaṇa should never be despised, whether he acts well or poorly. Whatever happiness, sorrow, great or small deed has come to him.
एवं तेषां विलपतां विप्राणां विविधा गिरः। अर्जुनो धनुषोऽभ्याशे तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥१-१७९-१४॥
evaṃ teṣāṃ vilapatāṃ viprāṇāṃ vividhā giraḥ। arjuno dhanuṣo'bhyāśe tasthau giririvācalaḥ ॥1-179-14॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; विलपतां (vilapatām) - of lamenting; विप्राणां (viprāṇām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; विविधा (vividhā) - various; गिरः (giraḥ) - voices; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; धनुषः (dhanuṣaḥ) - of the bow; अभ्याशे (abhyāśe) - near; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; गिरिः (giriḥ) - mountain; इव (iva) - like; अचलः (acalaḥ) - immovable;]
(Thus, of them, of the lamenting Brāhmaṇas, various voices (were heard). Arjuna near the bow stood like a mountain immovable.)
As the Brāhmaṇas lamented in various voices, Arjuna stood near his bow, unmoving like a mountain.
स तद्धनुः परिक्रम्य प्रदक्षिणमथाकरोत्। प्रणम्य शिरसा हृष्टो जगृहे च परन्तपः ॥१-१७९-१५॥
sa taddhanuḥ parikramya pradakṣiṇam athākarot। praṇamya śirasā hṛṣṭo jagṛhe ca parantapaḥ ॥1-179-15॥
[स (sa) - he; तत् (tat) - that; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; परिक्रम्य (parikramya) - having gone around; प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - to the right; अथ (atha) - then; अकरोत् (akarot) - he did; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (his) head; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - joyful; जगृहे (jagṛhe) - he took; च (ca) - and; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - the scorcher of foes;]
(He, having gone around that bow to the right, then did (so); having bowed with (his) head, joyful, the scorcher of foes also took (it).)

सज्यं च चक्रे निमिषान्तरेण; शरांश्च जग्राह दशार्धसङ्ख्यान्। विव्याध लक्ष्यं निपपात तच्च; छिद्रेण भूमौ सहसातिविद्धम् ॥१-१७९-१६॥
sajyaṃ ca cakre nimiṣāntareṇa; śarāṃś ca jagrāha daśārdhasaṅkhyān। vivyādha lakṣyaṃ nipapāta tacca; chidreṇa bhūmau sahasātividdham ॥1-179-16॥

(And he made the bow strung within the twinkling of an eye; and took arrows, ten and a half in number. He pierced the target, and that fell through the hole on the ground, suddenly excessively pierced.)

चेलावेधांस्ततश्चक्रुर्हाहाकारांश्च सर्वशः। न्यपतंश्चात्र नभसः समन्तात्पुष्पवृष्टयः ॥१-१७९-१८॥
