तस्मै दित्सति कन्यां तु ब्राह्मणाय महात्मने। कोप आसीन्महीपानामालोक्यान्योन्यमन्तिकात् ॥१-१८०-१॥
tasmai ditsati kanyāṃ tu brāhmaṇāya mahātmane। kopa āsīn mahīpānām ālokya anyonyam antikāt ॥1-180-1॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; दित्सति (ditsati) - gives; कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - daughter; तु (tu) - but; ब्राह्मणाय (brāhmaṇāya) - to the Brāhmaṇa; महात्मने (mahātmane) - to the great-souled one; कोपः (kopaḥ) - anger; आसीत् (āsīt) - arose; महीपानाम् (mahīpānām) - of the kings; आलोक्य (ālokya) - having seen; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyam) - each other; अन्तिकात् (antikāt) - from nearness;]
(To him gives the daughter but to the Brāhmaṇa, to the great-souled one. Anger arose of the kings, having seen each other from nearness.)
He gives the daughter to him, but to the Brāhmaṇa, the great-souled one. Seeing each other close by, anger arose among the kings.
अस्मानयमतिक्रम्य तृणीकृत्य च सङ्गतान्। दातुमिच्छति विप्राय द्रौपदीं योषितां वराम् ॥१-१८०-२॥
asmān ayam atikramya tṛṇīkṛtya ca saṅgatān। dātum icchati viprāya draupadīṃ yoṣitāṃ varām॥1-180-2॥

(Having transgressed us, having made (us) like grass, and (our) companions, this (person) desires to give Draupadī, the best of women, to the Brāhmaṇa.)
This person, having disregarded us and our companions as insignificant, wishes to give Draupadī, the best of women, to the Brāhmaṇa.
निहन्मैनं दुरात्मानं योऽयमस्मान्न मन्यते। न ह्यर्हत्येष सत्कारं नापि वृद्धक्रमं गुणैः ॥
nihanma enaṃ durātmānaṃ yo'ayam asmān na manyate। na hy arhati eṣa satkāraṃ na api vṛddhakramaṃ guṇaiḥ॥
[निहन् (nihan) - let us slay; एनम् (enam) - this one; दुरात्मानम् (durātmānam) - wicked-souled; यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; न (na) - not; मन्यते (manyate) - regards; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this one; सत्कारम् (satkāram) - respect; न (na) - not; अपि (api) - even; वृद्धक्रमम् (vṛddhakramam) - the order of elders; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by virtues;]
(Let us slay this wicked-souled one who does not regard us. Indeed, this one does not deserve respect nor even the order of elders by virtues.)
Let us kill this wicked-souled person who does not consider us. Truly, he does not deserve respect or the privileges of elders by virtue.
हन्मैनं सह पुत्रेण दुराचारं नृपद्विषम्। अयं हि सर्वानाहूय सत्कृत्य च नराधिपान् ॥ गुणवद्भोजयित्वा च ततः पश्चाद्विनिन्दति ॥१-१८०-४॥
hanmainaṃ saha putreṇa durācāraṃ nṛpadviṣam। ayaṃ hi sarvānāhūya satkṛtya ca narādhipān ॥ guṇavadbhojayitvā ca tataḥ paścādvinindati ॥1-180-4॥
[हन्म (hanma) - I shall kill; एनम् (enam) - this one; सह (saha) - together with; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - with (his) son; दुराचारम् (durācāram) - wicked in conduct; नृपद्विषम् (nṛpadviṣam) - enemy of kings; अयम् (ayam) - this one; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; आहूय (āhūya) - having summoned; सत्कृत्य (satkṛtya) - having honored; च (ca) - and; नराधिपान् (narādhipān) - kings; गुणवत् (guṇavat) - with virtues; भोजयित्वा (bhojayitvā) - having fed; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; विनिन्दति (vinindati) - he reproaches;]
(I shall kill this one, together with his son, who is wicked in conduct and an enemy of kings. This one, indeed, having summoned all the kings, having honored and fed them with virtues, then afterwards reproaches them.)
I will kill this wicked man, an enemy of kings, along with his son. For he, after inviting all the kings, honoring and feeding them with good qualities, later reproaches them.
अस्मिन्राजसमावाये देवानामिव संनये। किमयं सदृशं कञ्चिन्नृपतिं नैव दृष्टवान् ॥१-१८०-५॥
asmin rājasamāvāye devānām iva saṃnaye। kim ayaṃ sadṛśaṃ kañcin nṛpatiṃ naiva dṛṣṭavān ॥1-180-5॥
[अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; राजसमावाये (rājasamāvāye) - royal assembly; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; इव (iva) - like; संनये (saṃnaye) - gathering; किम् (kim) - whether; अयम् (ayam) - this; सदृशम् (sadṛśam) - equal; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - any; नृपतिम् (nṛpatim) - king; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; दृष्टवान् (dṛṣṭavān) - has seen;]
(In this royal assembly, like the gathering of the gods, has this (one) not seen any king equal (to himself)?)
In this royal assembly, which is like the gathering of the gods, has he not seen any king equal to himself?
न च विप्रेष्वधीकारो विद्यते वरणं प्रति। स्वयंवरः क्षत्रियाणामितीयं प्रथिता श्रुतिः ॥१-१८०-६॥
na ca vipreṣv adhikāro vidyate varaṇaṃ prati। svayaṃvaraḥ kṣatriyāṇām iti iyaṃ prathitā śrutiḥ ॥1-180-6॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; विप्रेषु (vipreṣu) - among Brāhmaṇas; अधिकारः (adhikāraḥ) - right; authority; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; वरणम् (varaṇam) - choosing; selection; प्रति (prati) - regarding; towards; स्वयंवरः (svayaṃvaraḥ) - self-choice; choosing by oneself; क्षत्रियाणाम् (kṣatriyāṇām) - of Kṣatriyas; इति (iti) - thus; इयं (iyaṃ) - this; प्रथिता (prathitā) - well-known; proclaimed; श्रुतिः (śrutiḥ) - scriptural statement;]
(And not among Brāhmaṇas does the right exist regarding choosing; self-choice is for Kṣatriyas—thus this well-known scriptural statement.)
It is well established in the scriptures that the right of self-choice (svayaṃvara) is reserved for Kṣatriyas and does not exist among Brāhmaṇas.
अथ वा यदि कन्येयं नेह कञ्चिद्बुभूषति। अग्नावेनां परिक्षिप्य याम राष्ट्राणि पार्थिवाः ॥१-१८०-७॥
atha vā yadi kanyeyam neha kañcid bubhūṣati। agnāvenāṃ parikṣipya yāma rāṣṭrāṇi pārthivāḥ ॥1-180-7॥
[अथ (atha) - then; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; कन्या (kanyā) - maiden; इयम् (iyam) - this; न (na) - not; इह (iha) - here; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - anyone; बुभूषति (bubhūṣati) - desires to marry; अग्नौ (agnau) - in fire; एनाम् (enām) - her; परिक्षिप्य (parikṣipya) - having surrounded; याम (yām) - let us go; राष्ट्राणि (rāṣṭrāṇi) - kingdoms; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - kings;]
(Then or if this maiden is not desired here by anyone, having surrounded her with fire, let us go, O kings, to the kingdoms.)
Then, if this maiden is not desired by anyone here, let us surround her with fire and depart to the kingdoms, O kings.
ब्राह्मणो यदि वा बाल्याल्लोभाद्वा कृतवानिदम्। विप्रियं पार्थिवेन्द्राणां नैष वध्यः कथञ्चन ॥१-१८०-८॥
brāhmaṇo yadi vā bālyāllobhādvā kṛtavānidam। vipriyaṃ pārthivendrāṇāṃ naiṣa vadhyaḥ kathaṃcana ॥1-180-8॥
[ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; बाल्यात् (bālyāt) - from childhood; लोभात् (lobhāt) - from greed; वा (vā) - or; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - has done; इदम् (idam) - this; विप्रियम् (vipriyam) - unpleasant act; पार्थिवेन्द्राणाम् (pārthivendrāṇām) - of the kings; न (na) - not; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this one; वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - liable to be killed; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(If a brāhmaṇa, whether from childhood or from greed, has done this unpleasant act towards the kings, this one is not liable to be killed in any way.)
Even if a brāhmaṇa has committed this unpleasant act against the kings, whether out of childishness or greed, he must never be put to death under any circumstances.
ब्राह्मणार्थं हि नो राज्यं जीवितं च वसूनि च। पुत्रपौत्रं च यच्चान्यदस्माकं विद्यते धनम् ॥१-१८०-९॥
brāhmaṇārthaṃ hi no rājyaṃ jīvitaṃ ca vasūni ca. putrapautraṃ ca yaccānyadasmākaṃ vidyate dhanam ॥1-180-9॥
[ब्राह्मणार्थम् (brāhmaṇārtham) - for the sake of Brāhmaṇas; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - our; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; च (ca) - and; वसूनि (vasūni) - wealths; च (ca) - and; पुत्रपौत्रम् (putrapautram) - sons and grandsons; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - else; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - of us; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth;]
(For the sake of Brāhmaṇas indeed our kingdom, life, and wealths, and sons and grandsons, and whatever else of us exists as wealth.)
Indeed, all that we possess—our kingdom, our lives, our wealth, our sons and grandsons, and whatever else belongs to us—exists for the sake of the Brāhmaṇas.
अवमानभयादेतत्स्वधर्मस्य च रक्षणात्। स्वयंवराणां चान्येषां मा भूदेवंविधा गतिः ॥१-१८०-१०॥
avamānabhayādetatsvadharmasya ca rakṣaṇāt। svayaṃvarāṇāṃ cānyeṣāṃ mā bhūdevaṃvidhā gatiḥ ॥1-180-10॥
[अवमान (avamāna) - disrespect; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; एतत् (etat) - this; स्वधर्मस्य (svadharmasya) - of one's own duty; च (ca) - and; रक्षणात् (rakṣaṇāt) - from protection; स्वयंवराणां (svayaṃvarāṇāṃ) - of the self-choice ceremonies; च (ca) - and; अन्येषां (anyeṣām) - of others; मा (mā) - let not; भूत् (bhūt) - be; एवंविधा (evaṃvidhā) - such; गतिः (gatiḥ) - course;]
(From fear of disrespect and from protection of one's own duty, and of the self-choice ceremonies and of others, let not such a course be.)
Out of fear of disrespect and to uphold one's own duty, as well as to protect the self-choice ceremonies and the interests of others, let not such a situation arise.
इत्युक्त्वा राजशार्दूला हृष्टाः परिघबाहवः। द्रुपदं सञ्जिघृक्षन्तः सायुधाः समुपाद्रवन् ॥१-१८०-११॥
ity uktvā rājaśārdūlā hṛṣṭāḥ parighabāhavaḥ। drupadaṃ sañjighṛkṣantaḥ sāyudhāḥ samupādravan ॥1-180-11॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; राजशार्दूला (rājaśārdūlā) - O tiger among kings; हृष्टाः (hṛṣṭāḥ) - rejoiced; परिघबाहवः (parighabāhavaḥ) - those with iron-club arms; द्रुपदं (drupadaṃ) - Drupada; सञ्जिघृक्षन्तः (sañjighṛkṣantaḥ) - desiring to seize; सायुधाः (sāyudhāḥ) - armed; समुपाद्रवन् (samupādravan) - approached together;]
(Thus having spoken, O tiger among kings, the rejoiced ones with iron-club arms, desiring to seize Drupada, armed, approached together.)
Having said this, O tiger among kings, those rejoiced warriors with arms like iron clubs, armed and desiring to seize Drupada, advanced together.
तान्गृहीतशरावापान्क्रुद्धानापततो नृपान्। द्रुपदो वीक्ष्य सन्त्रासाद्ब्राह्मणाञ्शरणं गतः ॥१-१८०-१२॥
tāṅ-gṛhīta-śarāvāpān kruddhān āpatato nṛpān। drupado vīkṣya santrāsād brāhmaṇāñ śaraṇaṃ gataḥ॥1-180-12॥

(Them having taken quivers of arrows, angry, rushing kings, Drupada having seen, from fear, to the Brāhmaṇas for refuge, went.)
Seeing the angry kings, who had taken up their quivers of arrows and were rushing at him, Drupada, out of fear, went to the Brāhmaṇas for refuge.
वेगेनापततस्तांस्तु प्रभिन्नानिव वारणान्। पाण्डुपुत्रौ महावीर्यौ प्रतीयतुररिंदमौ ॥१-१८०-१३॥
vegenāpatatastāṃstu prabhinnāniva vāraṇān। pāṇḍuputrau mahāvīryau pratīyaturariṃdamau ॥1-180-13॥
[वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; अपतत् (apatat) - fell upon; ताम् (tām) - them; तु (tu) - but; प्रभिन्नान् (prabhinnān) - broken; इव (iva) - as if; वारणान् (vāraṇān) - elephants; पाण्डुपुत्रौ (pāṇḍuputrau) - the sons of Pāṇḍu; महावीर्यौ (mahāvīryau) - of great strength; प्रतीयतुः (pratīyatuh) - appeared; अरिंदमौ (ariṃdamau) - the subduers of enemies;]
(With speed fell upon them but, broken as if elephants, the sons of Pāṇḍu of great strength appeared, the subduers of enemies.)
The two sons of Pāṇḍu, of great strength and subduers of enemies, appeared as if they were elephants broken and falling upon them with speed.
ततः समुत्पेतुरुदायुधास्ते; महीक्षितो बद्धतलाङ्गुलित्राः। जिघांसमानाः कुरुराजपुत्रा; वमर्षयन्तोऽर्जुनभीमसेनौ ॥१-१८०-१४॥
tataḥ samutpeturudāyudhāste; mahīkṣito baddhatalāṅgulitrāḥ. jighāṁsamānāḥ kururājaputrā; vamarṣayanto'rjunabhīmasenau ॥1-180-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; समुत्पेतुः (samutpetuḥ) - arose together; उदायुधाः (udāyudhāḥ) - with raised weapons; ते (te) - they; महीक्षितः (mahīkṣitaḥ) - kings; बद्ध (baddha) - bound; तलाङ्गुलित्राः (talāṅgulitrāḥ) - with arm-guards; जिघांसमानाः (jighāṁsamānāḥ) - desiring to slay; कुरुराजपुत्राः (kururājaputrāḥ) - sons of the Kuru king; वमर्षयन्तः (vamarṣayantaḥ) - rushing upon; अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; भीमसेनौ (bhīmasenau) - and Bhimasena;]
(Then they arose together with raised weapons, the kings, with arm-guards bound, desiring to slay, the sons of the Kuru king, rushing upon Arjuna and Bhimasena.)
Then the kings, with their arm-guards fastened and weapons raised, rose up together, the sons of the Kuru king, intent on slaying, rushed at Arjuna and Bhimasena.
ततस्तु भीमोऽद्भुतवीर्यकर्मा; महाबलो वज्रसमानवीर्यः। उत्पाट्य दोर्भ्यां द्रुममेकवीरो; निष्पत्रयामास यथा गजेन्द्रः ॥१-१८०-१५॥
tatastu bhīmo'dbhutavīryakarmā; mahābalo vajrasamānavīryaḥ। utpāṭya dorbhyāṃ drumamekavīro; niṣpatrayāmāsa yathā gajendraḥ ॥1-180-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; अद्भुतवीर्यकर्मा (adbhutavīryakarmā) - of wondrous heroic deeds; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; वज्रसमानवीर्यः (vajrasamānavīryaḥ) - whose heroism is equal to a thunderbolt; उत्पाट्य (utpāṭya) - having uprooted; दोर् (dor) - with arms; भ्याम् (bhyām) - two; द्रुमम् (drumam) - tree; एकवीरः (ekavīraḥ) - the sole hero; निष्पत्रयामास (niṣpatrayāmāsa) - stripped off the leaves; यथा (yathā) - just as; गजेन्द्रः (gajendraḥ) - the lord of elephants;]
(Then but Bhima, of wondrous heroic deeds, of great strength, whose heroism is equal to a thunderbolt, having uprooted with two arms a tree, the sole hero, stripped off the leaves just as the lord of elephants.)
Then Bhima, the mighty hero of wondrous deeds and strength equal to a thunderbolt, uprooted a tree with both arms and, like the lord of elephants, stripped it of its leaves.
तं वृक्षमादाय रिपुप्रमाथी; दण्डीव दण्डं पितृराज उग्रम्। तस्थौ समीपे पुरुषर्षभस्य; पार्थस्य पार्थः पृथुदीर्घबाहुः ॥१-१८०-१६॥
taṃ vṛkṣam-ādāya ripu-pramāthī; daṇḍīva daṇḍaṃ pitṛ-rāja ugram। tasthau samīpe puruṣarṣabhasya; pārthasya pārthaḥ pṛthu-dīrgha-bāhuḥ ॥1-180-16॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; वृक्षम् (vṛkṣam) - tree; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; रिपुप्रमाथी (ripu-pramāthī) - destroyer of enemies; दण्डीव (daṇḍīva) - like a staff-bearer; दण्डं (daṇḍam) - staff; पितृराज (pitṛ-rāja) - Yama; उग्रम् (ugram) - fierce; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; समीपे (samīpe) - near; पुरुषर्षभस्य (puruṣarṣabhasya) - of the bull among men; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Partha (Arjuna); पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Partha (Arjuna); पृथुदीर्घबाहुः (pṛthu-dīrgha-bāhuḥ) - broad and long-armed;]
(Having taken that tree, the destroyer of enemies, like a staff-bearer a fierce staff of Yama, stood near the bull among men, Partha; Partha, broad and long-armed.)
Partha, the broad and long-armed son of Pritha, stood near Arjuna, having taken that tree like Yama with his fierce staff, as the destroyer of enemies.
तत्प्रेक्ष्य कर्मातिमनुष्यबुद्धे; र्जिष्णोः सहभ्रातुरचिन्त्यकर्मा। दामोदरो भ्रातरमुग्रवीर्यं; हलायुधं वाक्यमिदं बभाषे ॥१-१८०-१७॥
tatprekṣya karmātimanuṣyabuddher jiṣṇoḥ sahabhrātur acintyakarmā। dāmodaro bhrātaram ugravīryaṃ halāyudhaṃ vākyam idaṃ babhāṣe ॥1-180-17॥
[तत् (tat) - that; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; कर्म (karma) - action; अतिमनुष्यबुद्धेः (atimanuṣyabuddheḥ) - of one with intelligence beyond human; जिष्णोः (jiṣṇoḥ) - of Jiṣṇu (Arjuna); सहभ्रातुः (sahabhrātuḥ) - of the brother together; अचिन्त्यकर्मा (acintyakarmā) - one whose actions are inconceivable; दामोदरः (dāmodaraḥ) - Dāmodara (Kṛṣṇa); भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - brother; उग्रवीर्यं (ugravīryam) - of fierce strength; हलायुधं (halāyudham) - Halāyudha (Balarāma); वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; इदं (idaṃ) - this; बभाषे (babhāṣe) - spoke;]
(Having seen that action of Jiṣṇu, whose intelligence is beyond human, whose brother's actions are inconceivable, Dāmodara (Kṛṣṇa) spoke this speech to his brother of fierce strength, Halāyudha (Balarāma).)
Seeing that act of Arjuna, whose intellect surpasses that of mortals and whose brother's deeds are unfathomable, Dāmodara (Kṛṣṇa) addressed these words to his mighty brother, Halāyudha (Balarāma).
य एष मत्तर्षभतुल्यगामी; महद्धनुः कर्षति तालमात्रम्। एषोऽर्जुनो नात्र विचार्यमस्ति; यद्यस्मि सङ्कर्षण वासुदेवः ॥१-१८०-१८॥
ya eṣa mattarṣabhatulyagāmī; mahaddhanuḥ karṣati tālamātram। eṣo'rjuno nātra vicāryamasti; yadyasmi saṅkarṣaṇa vāsudevaḥ ॥1-180-18॥
