गत्वा तु तां भार्गवकर्मशालां; पार्थौ पृथां प्राप्य महानुभावौ। तां याज्ञसेनीं परमप्रतीतौ; भिक्षेत्यथावेदयतां नराग्र्यौ ॥१-१८२-१॥
gatvā tu tāṃ bhārgavakarmaśālāṃ; pārthau pṛthāṃ prāpya mahānubhāvau. tāṃ yājñasenīṃ paramapratītau; bhikṣetyathāvedayatāṃ narāgryau ॥1-182-1॥
[गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; तु (tu) - but; तां (tāṃ) - her; भार्गवकर्मशालां (bhārgavakarmaśālāṃ) - Bhārgava's workshop; पार्थौ (pārthau) - the two sons of Pṛthā (Arjuna and Bhīma); पृथां (pṛthāṃ) - Pṛthā (Kuntī); प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; महानुभावौ (mahānubhāvau) - the great-souled ones; तां (tāṃ) - her; याज्ञसेनीं (yājñasenīṃ) - Yājñasenī (Draupadī); परमप्रतीतौ (paramapratītau) - having utmost confidence; भिक्षेत्य (bhikṣety) - saying 'bhikṣā' (alms); अथ (atha) - then; अवेदयतां (avedayatāṃ) - informed; नराग्र्यौ (narāgryau) - the foremost of men;]
(Having gone to that Bhārgava's workshop, the two sons of Pṛthā, having reached Pṛthā, the great-souled ones, having utmost confidence in Yājñasenī, then the foremost of men informed (her) saying 'bhikṣā' (alms).)
But after going to Bhārgava's workshop, the two great-souled sons of Pṛthā, having reached their mother and with utmost confidence in Yājñasenī, the foremost of men informed her, saying 'alms'.
कुटीगता सा त्वनवेक्ष्य पुत्रा; नुवाच भुङ्क्तेति समेत्य सर्वे। पश्चात्तु कुन्ती प्रसमीक्ष्य कन्यां; कष्टं मया भाषितमित्युवाच ॥१-१८२-२॥
kuṭīgātā sā tvanavekṣya putrā; nuvāca bhuṅkteti sametya sarve। paścāttu kuntī prasamīkṣya kanyāṃ; kaṣṭaṃ mayā bhāṣitamityuvāca ॥1-182-2॥

(Having gone to the hut, she, not having noticed her sons, said, "Eat," after all had assembled. Afterwards, Kunti, having carefully observed the maiden, said, "A difficult thing has been spoken by me.")
She went to the hut and, not noticing her sons, told them all to eat when they had assembled. Afterwards, Kunti, having carefully observed the maiden, said, "I have uttered something difficult."
साधर्मभीता हि विलज्जमाना; तां याज्ञसेनीं परमप्रतीताम्। पाणौ गृहीत्वोपजगाम कुन्ती; युधिष्ठिरं वाक्यमुवाच चेदम् ॥१-१८२-३॥
sādharmabhītā hi vilajjamānā; tāṃ yājñasenīṃ paramapratītām। pāṇau gṛhītvopajagāma kuntī; yudhiṣṭhiraṃ vākyamuvāca cedam ॥1-182-3॥
[साधर्मभीता (sādharmabhītā) - frightened of co-wifehood; हि (hi) - indeed; विलज्जमाना (vilajjamānā) - ashamed; ताम् (tām) - her; याज्ञसेनीम् (yājñasenīm) - Yājñasenī (Draupadī); परमप्रतीताम् (paramapratītām) - utterly confident; पाणौ (pāṇau) - by the hand; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; उपजगाम (upajagāma) - approached; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(Frightened of co-wifehood indeed, ashamed; her, Yājñasenī, utterly confident. By the hand having taken, approached Kuntī; Yudhiṣṭhira words spoke and this.)
Indeed, being frightened of co-wifehood and ashamed, Kuntī took the utterly confident Yājñasenī (Draupadī) by the hand, approached Yudhiṣṭhira, and spoke these words.
इयं हि कन्या द्रुपदस्य राज्ञ; स्तवानुजाभ्यां मयि संनिसृष्टा। यथोचितं पुत्र मयापि चोक्तं; समेत्य भुङ्क्तेति नृप प्रमादात् ॥१-१८२-४॥
iyaṃ hi kanyā drupadasya rājñaḥ; tava anujābhyām mayi saṃnisṛṣṭā। yathocitaṃ putra mayā api ca uktam; sametya bhuṅkte iti nṛpa pramādāt॥1-182-4॥
[इयं (iyaṃ) - this (feminine); हि (hi) - indeed; कन्या (kanyā) - maiden; द्रुपदस्य (drupadasya) - of Drupada; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; तव (tava) - your; अनुजाभ्यां (anujābhyām) - by the two younger brothers; मयि (mayi) - to me; संनिसृष्टा (saṃnisṛṣṭā) - entrusted; यथोचितं (yathocitam) - as is proper; पुत्र (putra) - son; मया (mayā) - by me; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - said; समेत्य (sametya) - having met; भुङ्क्ते (bhuṅkte) - enjoys; इति (iti) - thus; नृप (nṛpa) - king; प्रमादात् (pramādāt) - by inadvertence;]
(This indeed maiden of Drupada the king, by your two younger brothers to me entrusted. As is proper, son, by me also and said: 'Having met, enjoys'—thus, by the king's inadvertence.)
This maiden, the daughter of King Drupada, was entrusted to me by your two younger brothers. As is proper, son, I too have said: 'Let him, having met her, enjoy her'—thus, by the king's inadvertence.
कथं मया नानृतमुक्तमद्य; भवेत्कुरूणामृषभ ब्रवीहि। पाञ्चालराजस्य सुतामधर्मो; न चोपवर्तेत नभूतपूर्वः ॥१-१८२-५॥
kathaṁ mayā nānṛtamuktam adya; bhavet kurūṇām ṛṣabha bravīhi. pāñcālarājasya sutām adharmo; na copavarteta na bhūtapūrvaḥ ॥1-182-5॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; मया (mayā) - by me; न (na) - not; अनृतम् (anṛtam) - falsehood; उक्तम् (uktam) - spoken; अद्य (adya) - today; भवेत् (bhavet) - could be; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; ऋषभ (ṛṣabha) - bull; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - tell; पाञ्चालराजस्य (pāñcālarājasya) - of the king of the Pāñcālas; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; उपवर्तेत (upavarteta) - should occur; न (na) - not; भूतपूर्वः (bhūtapūrvaḥ) - ever happened before;]
(How by me not-falsehood spoken today; could be, O bull of the Kurus, tell. Of the king of the Pāñcālas' daughter, unrighteousness; and should not occur, never happened before.)
How could it be that I have not spoken falsehood today? Tell me, O bull of the Kurus. Unrighteousness regarding the daughter of the king of the Pāñcālas should not occur, nor has it ever happened before.
मुहूर्तमात्रं त्वनुचिन्त्य राजा; युधिष्ठिरो मातरमुत्तमौजाः। कुन्तीं समाश्वास्य कुरुप्रवीरो; धनञ्जयं वाक्यमिदं बभाषे ॥१-१८२-६॥
muhūrtamātraṃ tvanucintya rājā; yudhiṣṭhiro mātaramuttamaujāḥ. kuntīṃ samāśvāsya kurupravīro; dhanañjayaṃ vākyamidaṃ babhāṣe ॥1-182-6॥
[मुहूर्तमात्रम् (muhūrtamātram) - for a moment; only; त्व्-अनुचिन्त्य (tv-anucintya) - having reflected upon you; राजा (rājā) - the king; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; मातरम् (mātaram) - mother; उत्तम-ओजाः (uttama-aujāḥ) - of great strength; कुन्तीम् (kuntīm) - Kunti; सम्-आश्वास्य (sam-āśvāsya) - having consoled; कुरु-प्रवीरः (kuru-pravīraḥ) - the chief hero of the Kurus; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - to Dhananjaya; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; इदं (idaṃ) - these; बभाषे (babhāṣe) - spoke;]
(For a moment only, having reflected upon you, the king Yudhishthira of great strength, having consoled his mother Kunti, the chief hero of the Kurus, spoke these words to Dhananjaya.)
Yudhishthira, the mighty king, after briefly reflecting on you, consoled his mother Kunti and then, as the foremost of the Kurus, spoke these words to Dhananjaya.
त्वया जिता पाण्डव याज्ञसेनी; त्वया च तोषिष्यति राजपुत्री। प्रज्वाल्यतां हूयतां चापि वह्नि; र्गृहाण पाणिं विधिवत्त्वमस्याः ॥१-१८२-७॥
tvayā jitā pāṇḍava yājñasenī; tvayā ca toṣiṣyati rājaputrī. prajvālyatāṃ hūyatāṃ cāpi vahni; rgṛhāṇa pāṇiṃ vidhivat tvam asyāḥ ॥1-182-7॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; जिता (jitā) - conquered; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; याज्ञसेनी (yājñasenī) - Yājñasenī (Draupadī, daughter of Yajñasena); त्वया (tvayā) - by you; च (ca) - and; तोषिष्यति (toṣiṣyati) - will be pleased; राजपुत्री (rājaputrī) - princess; प्रज्वाल्यतां (prajvālyatāṃ) - let it be kindled; हूयतां (hūyatāṃ) - let it be offered; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वह्नि (vahni) - fire; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; पाणिं (pāṇim) - hand; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to the rule; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of her;]
(By you conquered, O Pāṇḍava, Yājñasenī; by you also the princess will be pleased. Let the fire be kindled and offerings made; accept the hand of her according to the rule.)
O Pāṇḍava, you have won Yājñasenī; the princess will also be pleased by you. Let the fire be kindled and offerings made; accept her hand according to the prescribed rites.
अर्जुन उवाच॥

मा मां नरेन्द्र त्वमधर्मभाजं; कृथा न धर्मो ह्ययमीप्सितोऽन्यैः। भवान्निवेश्यः प्रथमं ततोऽयं; भीमो महाबाहुरचिन्त्यकर्मा ॥१-१८२-८॥
mā māṃ narendra tvam adharmabhājaṃ; kṛthā na dharmo hy ayam īpsito 'nyaiḥ. bhavān niveśyaḥ prathamaṃ tato 'yaṃ; bhīmo mahābāhur acintyakarmā ॥1-182-8॥
[मा (mā) - do not; मां (māṃ) - me; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अधर्मभाजं (adharmabhājam) - one who partakes of unrighteousness; कृथा (kṛthā) - make; न (na) - not; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; हि (hi) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this; ईप्सितः (īpsitaḥ) - desired; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; भवान् (bhavān) - yourself; निवेश्यः (niveśyaḥ) - should be established; प्रथमम् (prathamam) - first; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अयम् (ayam) - this; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; अचिन्त्यकर्मा (acintyakarmā) - of unfathomable deeds;]
(Do not make me, O king, one who partakes of unrighteousness; for this righteousness is not desired by others. Yourself should be established first, then this Bhima, mighty-armed, of unfathomable deeds.)

(I then Nakula immediately after my (turn); the son of Mādrī, Sahadeva, the youngest; Vṛkodara, I and the twins and, O king, restraint and the daughter of you indeed all (are).)
I, then Nakula immediately after me; the son of Mādrī, Sahadeva, is the youngest; Vṛkodara, I, and the twins, O king, as well as restraint and your daughter, indeed, all of us are present.
एवङ्गते यत्करणीयमत्र; धर्म्यं यशस्यं कुरु तत्प्रचिन्त्य। पाञ्चालराजस्य च यत्प्रियं स्या; त्तद्ब्रूहि सर्वे स्म वशे स्थितास्ते ॥१-१८२-१०॥
evaṅgate yatkaraṇīyam atra; dharmyaṃ yaśasyaṃ kuru tatpracintya. pāñcālarājasya ca yat priyaṃ syāt; tad brūhi sarve sma vaśe sthitās te ॥1-182-10॥
[एवम्- गते (evam-gate) - thus-having happened; यत्-करणीयम्-अत्र (yat-karaṇīyam-atra) - what-should be done-here; धर्म्यम् (dharmyam) - righteous; यशस्यम् (yaśasyam) - glorious; कुरु (kuru) - do; तत्-प्रचिन्त्य (tat-pracintya) - that-having considered; पाञ्चाल-राजस्य-च (pāñcāla-rājasya-ca) - of the king of the Pāñcālas-and; यत्-प्रियं-स्यात् (yat-priyaṃ-syāt) - what-dear-might be; तत्-ब्रूहि (tat-brūhi) - that-speak; सर्वे-स्म-वशे-स्थिताः-ते (sarve-sma-vaśe-sthitāḥ-te) - all-indeed-under control-standing-they;]
(Thus having happened, what should be done here, righteous, glorious, do, that having considered. Of the king of the Pāñcālas and what might be dear, that speak; all indeed are standing under your control.)
Given the situation, do what is righteous and brings glory, after due consideration. Also, tell what would please the king of the Pāñcālas; all are indeed under your command.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ते दृष्ट्वा तत्र तिष्ठन्तीं सर्वे कृष्णां यशस्विनीम्। सम्प्रेक्ष्यान्योन्यमासीना हृदयैस्तामधारयन् ॥१-१८२-११॥
te dṛṣṭvā tatra tiṣṭhantīṃ sarve kṛṣṇāṃ yaśasvinīm। samprekṣyānyonyam āsīnā hṛdayais tām adhārayan ॥1-182-11॥
[ते (te) - they; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तत्र (tatra) - there; तिष्ठन्तीं (tiṣṭhantīm) - standing; सर्वे (sarve) - all; कृष्णां (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); यशस्विनीम् (yaśasvinīm) - illustrious; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having looked at; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyam) - at each other; आसीनाः (āsīnāḥ) - seated; हृदयैः (hṛdayaiḥ) - with (their) hearts; ताम् (tām) - her; अधारयन् (adhārayan) - they bore (endured/supported);]
(They, having seen her standing there, all (the kings), having looked at Kṛṣṇā the illustrious, seated, with (their) hearts, bore her (in their minds).)
Having seen Kṛṣṇā, the illustrious one, standing there, all the kings, looking at each other, sat down and kept her in their hearts.
तेषां हि द्रौपदीं दृष्ट्वा सर्वेषाममितौजसाम्। सम्प्रमथ्येन्द्रियग्रामं प्रादुरासीन्मनोभवः ॥१-१८२-१२॥
teṣāṃ hi draupadīṃ dṛṣṭvā sarveṣām amitaujasaām। sampramathya indriyagrāmaṃ prādurāsīn manobhavaḥ ॥1-182-12॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; हि (hi) - indeed; द्रौपदीम् (draupadīm) - Draupadī; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; अमितौजसाम् (amitaujasaām) - of immeasurable energy; सम्प्रमथ्य (sampramathya) - having greatly agitated; इन्द्रियग्रामम् (indriyagrāmam) - the group of senses; प्रादुरासीन् (prādurāsīn) - arose; मनोभवः (manobhavaḥ) - desire (Kāma);]
(Of them indeed, having seen Draupadī, of all of immeasurable energy, having greatly agitated the group of senses, desire (Kāma) arose.)
Indeed, when they saw Draupadī, desire arose in all those of immeasurable energy, greatly agitating their senses.
काम्यं रूपं हि पाञ्चाल्या विधात्रा विहितं स्वयम्। बभूवाधिकमन्याभ्यः सर्वभूतमनोहरम् ॥१-१८२-१३॥
kāmyaṃ rūpaṃ hi pāñcālyā vidhātrā vihitaṃ svayam। babhūvādhikamanyābhyaḥ sarvabhūtamanoharam ॥1-182-13॥
[काम्यं (kāmyaṃ) - desirable; रूपं (rūpaṃ) - form; हि (hi) - indeed; पाञ्चाल्या (pāñcālyā) - of Pāñcālī; विधात्रा (vidhātrā) - by the Creator; विहितं (vihitaṃ) - ordained; स्वयम् (svayam) - by herself; बभूव (babhūva) - became; अधिकम् (adhikam) - greater; अन्याभ्यः (anyābhyaḥ) - than others; सर्वभूतमनोहरम् (sarvabhūtamanoharam) - enchanting to all beings;]
(Desirable form indeed of Pāñcālī by the Creator ordained by herself became greater than others, enchanting to all beings.)
The desirable form of Pāñcālī, indeed ordained by the Creator Himself, became greater than that of others, enchanting to all beings.
तेषामाकारभावज्ञः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। द्वैपायनवचः कृत्स्नं संस्मरन्वै नरर्षभ ॥१-१८२-१४॥
teṣām ākāra-bhāva-jñaḥ kuntī-putro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। dvaipāyana-vacaḥ kṛtsnaṃ saṃsmaran vai nara-ṛṣabha ॥1-182-14॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; आकार (ākāra) - form; भाव (bhāva) - state; ज्ञः (jñaḥ) - knower; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntī-putraḥ) - son of Kuntī; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; द्वैपायनवचः (dvaipāyana-vacaḥ) - Vyāsa's words; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - entirely; संस्मरन् (saṃsmaran) - remembering; वै (vai) - indeed; नरर्षभ (nara-ṛṣabha) - bull among men;]
(Of them, the knower of form and state, the son of Kuntī, Yudhiṣṭhira, remembering entirely Vyāsa's words indeed, O bull among men.)
Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, who understood their forms and states, remembered all the words of Vyāsa, O best of men.
अब्रवीत्स हि तान्भ्रातृन्मिथोभेदभयान्नृपः। सर्वेषां द्रौपदी भार्या भविष्यति हि नः शुभा ॥१-१८२-१५॥
abravīts hi tān bhrātṝn mitho-bheda-bhayān nṛpaḥ। sarveṣāṃ draupadī bhāryā bhaviṣyati hi naḥ śubhā॥1-182-15॥
[अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; सः (saḥ) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; तान् (tān) - to them; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; मिथः (mithaḥ) - mutual; भेद (bheda) - division; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; सर्वेषां (sarveṣāṃ) - of all; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - for us; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious;]
(He indeed said to them, the brothers, out of fear of mutual division, the king: "Draupadī will indeed be the wife of all of us, auspicious.")
The king, fearing discord among the brothers, said to them: "Draupadī will be the wife of all of us, and she is auspicious."
