Pancharatra: Doubt regarding a woman marrying many.

tataste pāṇḍavāḥ sarve pāñcālyaśca mahāyaśāḥ। pratyutthāya mahātmānaṃ kṛṣṇaṃ dṛṣṭvābhyapūjayan ॥1-188-1॥

(Then they, all the Pāṇḍavas and the greatly renowned son of Pāñcāla, having risen to meet, having seen the great-souled Kṛṣṇa, honored (him).)
Then all the Pāṇḍavas and the illustrious son of Pāñcāla, upon seeing the noble-hearted Kṛṣṇa, rose to greet and honor him.
प्रतिनन्द्य स तान्सर्वान्पृष्ट्वा कुशलमन्ततः। आसने काञ्चने शुभ्रे निषसाद महामनाः ॥१-१८८-२॥

अनुज्ञातास्तु ते सर्वे कृष्णेनामिततेजसा। आसनेषु महार्हेषु निषेदुर्द्विपदां वराः ॥१-१८८-३॥

(But all of them, permitted by Kṛṣṇa of immeasurable brilliance, the best of bipeds sat down on the most excellent seats.)

(Then, after a moment, having uttered sweet speech, the son of Pṛṣata asked him, the great-souled one, for the sake of Draupadī, the lord of men.)
Then, after a moment, Pārṣata, having spoken sweet words, asked that great-souled lord of men about Draupadī.
कथमेका बहूनां स्यान्न च स्याद्धर्मसङ्करः। एतन्नो भगवान्सर्वं प्रब्रवीतु यथातथम् ॥१-१८८-५॥
kathamekā bahūnāṃ syānna ca syāddharmasaṅkaraḥ। etanno bhagavānsarvaṃ prabravītu yathātatham ॥1-188-5॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; एका (ekā) - one; बहूनाम् (bahūnām) - of many; स्यात् (syāt) - could be; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; स्यात् (syāt) - could be; धर्मसङ्करः (dharmasaṅkaraḥ) - mixture of dharmas; एतत् (etat) - this; नः (naḥ) - to us; भगवान् (bhagavān) - O Lord; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; प्रब्रवीतु (prabravītu) - may (he) explain; यथा (yathā) - as; तथम् (tatham) - so;]
(How could one (woman) be for many, and not could there be a mixture of dharmas? This, to us, O Lord, all may you explain as it is.)
How can one woman belong to many, and how can there not be a mixture of dharmas? O Lord, please explain all this to us exactly as it is.

अस्मिन्धर्मे विप्रलम्भे लोकवेदविरोधके। यस्य यस्य मतं यद्यच्छ्रोतुमिच्छामि तस्य तत् ॥१-१८८-६॥
asmin dharme vipralambhe loka-veda-virodhake। yasya yasya mataṃ yadyac chrotum icchāmi tasya tat ॥1-188-6॥
[अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; धर्मे (dharme) - dharma; विप्रलम्भे (vipralambhe) - in deception; लोक (loka) - world; वेद (veda) - Veda; विरोधके (virodhake) - in opposition; यस्स्य यस्य (yasya yasya) - of whichever; मतं (mataṃ) - opinion; यद्यत् (yadyat) - whatever; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; तस्य (tasya) - of him; तत् (tat) - that;]
(In this dharma, in deception, in opposition to the world and the Veda, of whichever opinion, whatever I wish to hear, of him, that.)
In this matter of dharma, which involves deception and is opposed to both worldly and Vedic norms, I wish to hear whatever opinion each person holds.
द्रुपद उवाच॥

अधर्मोऽयं मम मतो विरुद्धो लोकवेदयोः। न ह्येका विद्यते पत्नी बहूनां द्विजसत्तम ॥१-१८८-७॥
adharmo'yaṃ mama mato viruddho lokavedayoḥ। na hyekā vidyate patnī bahūnāṃ dvijasattama ॥1-188-7॥
[अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; अयम् (ayam) - this; मम (mama) - my; मतः (mataḥ) - opinion; विरुद्धः (viruddhaḥ) - opposed; लोकवेदयोः (loka-vedayoḥ) - to worldly custom and Veda; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; एका (ekā) - one; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; पत्नी (patnī) - wife; बहूनाम् (bahūnām) - of many; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of twice-born;]
(This is unrighteousness, in my opinion, opposed to worldly custom and the Veda. Indeed, there is not one wife for many, O best of twice-born.)
This is unrighteous, in my view, and contrary to both worldly custom and the Veda. Indeed, O best of twice-born, one wife does not exist for many men.
न चाप्याचरितः पूर्वैरयं धर्मो महात्मभिः। न च धर्मोऽप्यनेकस्थश्चरितव्यः सनातनः ॥१-१८८-८॥
na cāpy ācaritaḥ pūrvair ayaṃ dharmo mahātmabhiḥ। na ca dharmo'py anekasthaś caritavyaḥ sanātanaḥ ॥1-188-8॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; आचरितः (ācaritaḥ) - practiced; पूर्वैः (pūrvaiḥ) - by the former ones; अयम् (ayam) - this; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by the great souls; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; अपि (api) - also; अनेकस्थः (anekasthaḥ) - in many places; चरितव्यः (caritavyaḥ) - to be practiced; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal;]
(Not also practiced by the former ones is this dharma by the great souls. And not also is dharma, being eternal, to be practiced in many places.)
This dharma has not been practiced by the great souls of the past. And even an eternal dharma should not be practiced in many different ways.
अतो नाहं करोम्येवं व्यवसायं क्रियां प्रति। धर्मसंदेहसंदिग्धं प्रतिभाति हि मामिदम् ॥१-१८८-९॥
ato nāhaṃ karomyevaṃ vyavasāyaṃ kriyāṃ prati। dharmasaṃdehasaṃdigdhaṃ pratibhāti hi mām idam ॥1-188-9॥

(Therefore, I do not make such a decision towards action. This indeed appears to me as uncertain due to doubt in dharma.)

यवीयसः कथं भार्यां ज्येष्ठो भ्राता द्विजर्षभ। ब्रह्मन्समभिवर्तेत सद्वृत्तः संस्तपोधन ॥१-१८८-१०॥
yavīyasaḥ kathaṁ bhāryāṁ jyeṣṭho bhrātā dvijarṣabha। brahmansamabhivarteta sadvṛttaḥ saṁstapodhana ॥1-188-10॥
[यवीयसः (yavīyasaḥ) - of the younger; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; भार्यां (bhāryām) - wife; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - elder; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; द्विजर्षभ (dvijarṣabha) - O best of twice-born; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; समभिवर्तेत (samabhivarteta) - should behave towards; सद्वृत्तः (sadvṛttaḥ) - of good conduct; संस्तपोधन (saṁstapodhana) - O possessor of austerity;]
(Of the younger, how (towards) the wife, the elder brother, O best of twice-born, O Brāhmaṇa, should behave towards, of good conduct, O possessor of austerity.)
O best of twice-born, O Brāhmaṇa, how should the elder brother of good conduct behave towards the wife of the younger brother, O possessor of austerity?
न तु धर्मस्य सूक्ष्मत्वाद्गतिं विद्मः कथञ्चन। अधर्मो धर्म इति वा व्यवसायो न शक्यते ॥१-१८८-११॥
na tu dharmasya sūkṣmatvād gatiṃ vidmaḥ kathañcana। adharmo dharma iti vā vyavasāyo na śakyate॥1-188-11॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; सूक्ष्मत्वात् (sūkṣmatvāt) - due to subtlety; गतिम् (gatim) - course; विद्मः (vidmaḥ) - we know; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - adharma; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; इति (iti) - thus; वा (vā) - or; व्यवसायः (vyavasāyaḥ) - determination; न (na) - not; शक्यते (śakyate) - is possible;]
(But due to the subtlety of dharma, we do not know its course in any way. The determination that 'this is adharma, this is dharma' is not possible.)
But because dharma is so subtle, we cannot know its true course in any way. It is not possible to definitively determine, 'this is adharma, this is dharma.'
कर्तुमस्मद्विधैर्ब्रह्मंस्ततो न व्यवसाम्यहम्। पञ्चानां महिषी कृष्णा भवत्विति कथञ्चन ॥१-१८८-१२॥
kartum asmad-vidhair brahman tato na vyavasāmy aham। pañcānāṃ mahiṣī kṛṣṇā bhavatv iti kathaṃcana ॥1-188-12॥
[कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; to accomplish; अस्मद्विधैः (asmad-vidhaiḥ) - by those like me; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; न (na) - not; व्यवसामि (vyavasāmi) - I resolve; अहम् (aham) - I; पञ्चानाम् (pañcānām) - of the five; महिषी (mahiṣī) - queen; chief wife; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); भवतु (bhavatu) - let her be; इति (iti) - thus; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(To do (this) by those like me, O Brahman, therefore I do not resolve. Of the five, let Kṛṣṇā be the queen, thus, in any way.)
O Brahman, I do not resolve to do this by those like me; therefore, let Kṛṣṇā be the chief wife of the five, in any way.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

न मे वागनृतं प्राह नाधर्मे धीयते मतिः। वर्तते हि मनो मेऽत्र नैषोऽधर्मः कथञ्चन ॥१-१८८-१३॥
na me vāganṛtaṃ prāha nādharme dhīyate matiḥ। vartate hi mano me'tra naiṣo'dharmaḥ kathañcana ॥1-188-13॥
[न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; वाक् (vāk) - speech; अनृतम् (anṛtam) - falsehood; प्राह (prāha) - has spoken; न (na) - not; अधर्मे (adharme) - in unrighteousness; धीयते (dhīyate) - is placed; मतिः (matiḥ) - mind; वर्तते (vartate) - exists; हि (hi) - indeed; मन् (manas) - mind; मे (me) - my; अत्र (atra) - here; न (na) - not; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way;]
(Not my speech has spoken falsehood; not in unrighteousness is placed (my) mind. Indeed, my mind exists here; this is not unrighteousness in any way.)
My speech has not uttered falsehood, nor is my mind set on unrighteousness. Indeed, my mind is present here; this is by no means unrighteous.
श्रूयते हि पुराणेऽपि जटिला नाम गौतमी। ऋषीनध्यासितवती सप्त धर्मभृतां वर ॥१-१८८-१४॥
śrūyate hi purāṇe'pi jaṭilā nāma gautamī। ṛṣīn adhyāsitavatī sapta dharmabhṛtāṃ vara ॥1-188-14॥
[श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; is said; हि (hi) - indeed; for; पुराणेऽपि (purāṇe'pi) - in the Purāṇa also; जटिला (jaṭilā) - Jaṭilā (name); नाम (nāma) - by name; गौतमी (gautamī) - Gautamī (name); ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages (accusative plural); अध्यासितवती (adhyāsitavatī) - had dwelt with; had lived among; सप्त (sapta) - seven; धर्मभृतां (dharmabhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; of the righteous; वर (vara) - best; chief;]
(It is heard indeed in the Purāṇa also (that) Jaṭilā by name, Gautamī, had dwelt with the seven sages, the best of the upholders of dharma.)
It is said in the Purāṇa that Jaṭilā, also known as Gautamī, lived among the seven sages, the foremost upholders of righteousness.
गुरोश्च वचनं प्राहुर्धर्मं धर्मज्ञसत्तम। गुरूणां चैव सर्वेषां जनित्री परमो गुरुः ॥१-१८८-१५॥
guroś ca vacanaṃ prāhur dharmaṃ dharmajña-sattama। gurūṇāṃ caiva sarveṣāṃ janitrī paramo guruḥ ॥1-188-15॥
[गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; of the guru; च (ca) - and; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; statement; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they say; declare; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - dharma; righteousness; धर्मज्ञसत्तम (dharmajña-sattama) - O best among those who know dharma; गुरूणाम् (gurūṇām) - of the teachers; of the gurus; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; जनित्री (janitrī) - mother; she who gives birth; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; highest; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; guru;]
(The word of the teacher, they say, is dharma, O best among those who know dharma. Of all the teachers, indeed, the mother is the supreme teacher.)
O best among those who know dharma, the command of the teacher is considered dharma. Among all teachers, the mother is regarded as the highest guru.
सा चाप्युक्तवती वाचं भैक्षवद्भुज्यतामिति। तस्मादेतदहं मन्ये धर्मं द्विजवरोत्तम ॥१-१८८-१६॥
sā cāpyuktavatī vācaṃ bhaikṣavadbhujyatāmiti। tasmādetadahaṃ manye dharmaṃ dvijavarottama ॥1-188-16॥
[सा (sā) - she; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उक्तवती (uktavatī) - having spoken; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; भैक्षवत् (bhaikṣavat) - like a beggar; भुज्यताम् (bhujyatām) - let it be eaten; इति (iti) - thus; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; एतत् (etat) - this; अहम् (aham) - I; मन्ये (manye) - think; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - righteousness; द्विजवरोत्तम (dvijavarottama) - O best among the twice-born;]
(She also having spoken the speech, "Let it be eaten like a beggar," thus; therefore, this I think is righteousness, O best among the twice-born.)
She said, "Let it be eaten as a beggar would." Therefore, O best of the twice-born, I think this is righteousness.

एवमेतद्यथाहायं धर्मचारी युधिष्ठिरः। अनृतान्मे भयं तीव्रं मुच्येयमनृतात्कथम् ॥१-१८८-१७॥
evam etad yathāha ayaṃ dharmacārī yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। anṛtān me bhayaṃ tīvraṃ mucyeya anṛtāt katham ॥1-188-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; यथा (yathā) - as; आह (āha) - said; अयम् (ayam) - this; धर्मचारी (dharmacārī) - one who follows dharma; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; अनृतात् (anṛtāt) - from untruth; मे (me) - my; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; तीव्रम् (tīvram) - intense; मुच्येय (mucyeya) - may I be released; अनृतात् (anṛtāt) - from untruth; कथम् (katham) - how;]
(Thus, as this dharma-follower Yudhishthira said, from untruth, my intense fear—how may I be released from untruth?)
"It is so, as this dharma-abiding Yudhishthira has said. How can I be freed from my intense fear of untruth?"

अनृतान्मोक्ष्यसे भद्रे धर्मश्चैष सनातनः। न तु वक्ष्यामि सर्वेषां पाञ्चाल शृणु मे स्वयम् ॥१-१८८-१८॥
anṛtān mokṣyase bhadre dharmaś caiṣa sanātanaḥ। na tu vakṣyāmi sarveṣāṃ pāñcāla śṛṇu me svayam॥1-188-18॥
[अनृतात् (anṛtāt) - from untruth; मोक्ष्यसे (mokṣyase) - you will be released; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; च (ca) - and; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will speak; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - to all; पाञ्चाल (pāñcāla) - O Pāñcāla (Draupadī); शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; मे (me) - to me; स्वयम् (svayam) - yourself;]
(From untruth you will be released, O auspicious one; this dharma is eternal. But I will not speak to all, O Pāñcāla, listen to me yourself.)
O blessed one, you will be freed from untruth; this is the eternal dharma. But I will not declare it to everyone—O Pāñcāla, listen to me yourself.
यथायं विहितो धर्मो यतश्चायं सनातनः। यथा च प्राह कौन्तेयस्तथा धर्मो न संशयः ॥१-१८८-१९॥
yathāyaṃ vihito dharmo yataścāyaṃ sanātanaḥ। yathā ca prāha kaunteyastathā dharmo na saṃśayaḥ ॥1-188-19॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner; as; in which manner; अयम् (ayam) - this; he; विहितः (vihitaḥ) - established; ordained; prescribed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; law; righteousness; यतः (yataḥ) - because; since; from which; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this; he; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; perpetual; यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner; as; in which manner; च (ca) - and; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; said; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - Kaunteya; son of Kunti; Arjuna; तथा (tathā) - so; thus; in that manner; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; law; righteousness; न (na) - not; no; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; uncertainty;]
(Just as this dharma is established, and because this is eternal, just as Kaunteya spoke, so is dharma, there is no doubt.)
Just as this dharma is established and because it is eternal, as Kaunteya has said, so indeed is dharma—there is no doubt about it.

tat utthāya bhagavān vyāsaḥ dvaipāyanaḥ prabhuḥ। kare gṛhītvā rājānam rājaveśma samāviśat ॥1-188-20॥
[तत् (tat) - then; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having arisen; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; द्वैपायनः (dvaipāyanaḥ) - son of Dvaipayana; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; करे (kare) - by the hand; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; राजवेश्म (rājaveśma) - the royal palace; समाविशत् (samāviśat) - entered;]
(Then, having arisen, the venerable Vyāsa, son of Dvaipayana, the lord, having taken the king by the hand, entered the royal palace.)

पाण्डवाश्चापि कुन्ती च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः। विचेतसस्ते तत्रैव प्रतीक्षन्ते स्म तावुभौ ॥१-१८८-२१॥
pāṇḍavāś cāpi kuntī ca dhṛṣṭadyumnaś ca pārṣataḥ। vicetasas te tatraiva pratīkṣante sma tāv ubhau ॥1-188-21॥
[पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the sons of Pāṇḍu; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; च (ca) - and; धृष्टद्युम्नः (dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ) - Dhṛṣṭadyumna; च (ca) - and; पार्षतः (pārṣataḥ) - the son of Pṛṣata; विचेतसः (vicetasah) - bewildered; ते (te) - they; तत्र (tatra) - there; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रतीक्षन्ते (pratīkṣante) - were waiting; स्म (sma) - indeed; तौ (tau) - those two; उभौ (ubhau) - both;]
(The sons of Pāṇḍu and also Kuntī and Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of Pṛṣata, bewildered, they were waiting right there indeed for those two, both.)

ततो द्वैपायनस्तस्मै नरेन्द्राय महात्मने। आचख्यौ तद्यथा धर्मो बहूनामेकपत्निता ॥१-१८८-२२॥
tato dvaipāyanas tasmai narendrāya mahātmane। ācakhyau tadyathā dharmo bahūnām ekapatnitā ॥1-188-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्वैपायनः (dvaipāyanaḥ) - Vyāsa; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; नरेन्द्राय (narendrāya) - to the king; महात्मने (mahātmane) - to the great-souled; आचख्यौ (ācakhyau) - related; तत् (tat) - that; यथा (yathā) - as; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; बहूनाम् (bahūnām) - of many; एकपत्निता (ekapatnitā) - having one wife;]
(Then Vyāsa related to that king, the great-souled one, that as Dharma (righteousness) of many is having one wife.)
Then Vyāsa narrated to the noble king how Dharma, for many, is the practice of having only one wife.
