पर्यपृच्छददीनात्मा कुन्तीपुत्रं सुवर्चसम्। कथं जानीम भवतः क्षत्रियान्ब्राह्मणानुत ॥१-१८७-२॥
paryapṛcchadadīnātmā kuntīputraṃ suvarcasam। kathaṃ jānīma bhavataḥ kṣatriyānbrāhmaṇānuta ॥1-187-2॥

(He who was not dejected in spirit asked Kuntī's son of splendid radiance: "How shall we know your Kṣatriyas and Brāhmaṇas and?")
The one with an undepressed spirit questioned Kuntī's radiant son: "How can we recognize your Kṣatriyas and Brāhmaṇas?"
वैश्यान्वा गुणसम्पन्नानुत वा शूद्रयोनिजान्। मायामास्थाय वा सिद्धांश्चरतः सर्वतोदिशम् ॥१-१८७-३॥
vaiśyān vā guṇasampannān uta vā śūdrayonijān। māyām āsthāya vā siddhāṃś carataḥ sarvatodiśam ॥1-187-3॥

(Vaiśyas or those endowed with qualities and or those born of Śūdra womb; having resorted to illusion or perfected beings moving in all directions.)
Vaiśyas, or those possessing virtues, or those born of Śūdra origin; having taken to illusion, or perfected beings, roam in all directions.
कृष्णाहेतोरनुप्राप्तान्दिवः संदर्शनार्थिनः। ब्रवीतु नो भवान्सत्यं संदेहो ह्यत्र नो महान् ॥१-१८७-४॥
kṛṣṇāhetoranuprāptāndivaḥ saṃdarśanārthinaḥ। bravītu no bhavānsatyaṃ saṃdeho hyatra no mahān ॥1-187-4॥
[कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); हेतोः (hetoḥ) - for the sake; अनुप्राप्तान् (anuprāptān) - arrived; दिवः (divaḥ) - from heaven; संदर्शनार्थिनः (saṃdarśanārthinaḥ) - desiring to see; ब्रवीतु (bravītu) - let (him) speak; नः (naḥ) - to us; भवान् (bhavān) - you; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; संदेहः (saṃdehaḥ) - doubt; हि (hi) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; नः (naḥ) - for us; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(For the sake of Kṛṣṇā, those who have arrived from heaven, desiring to see—let you speak the truth to us; indeed, here is a great doubt for us.)
Please tell us the truth about those who have come from heaven for Kṛṣṇā's sake and wish to be seen; for we have a great doubt here.
अपि नः संशयस्यान्ते मनस्तुष्टिरिहाविशेत्। अपि नो भागधेयानि शुभानि स्युः परन्तप ॥१-१८७-५॥
api naḥ saṁśayasyānte manastuṣṭirihāviśet। api no bhāgadheyāni śubhāni syuḥ parantapa ॥1-187-5॥

कामया ब्रूहि सत्यं त्वं सत्यं राजसु शोभते। इष्टापूर्तेन च तथा वक्तव्यमनृतं न तु ॥१-१८७-६॥

श्रुत्वा ह्यमरसङ्काश तव वाक्यमरिंदम। ध्रुवं विवाहकरणमास्थास्यामि विधानतः ॥१-१८७-७॥

(We indeed are kṣatriyas, O king, sons of the great-souled Pāṇḍu. Know me as the eldest, the son of Kuntī, and these two as Bhīmasena and Arjuna, by whom your sons, O king, were defeated in the royal assembly.)

(The two sons of Yama, but there, O king, where Kṛṣṇā is situated, let your mental sorrow pass away. We are kṣatriyas, O bull among men. Like a lotus-lady, this daughter of yours has gone from one lake to another lake.)
O king, the two sons of Yama, where Kṛṣṇā is present, let your sorrow pass away. We are kṣatriyas, O best of men. Like a lotus-lady, your daughter has moved from one lake to another.
इति तथ्यं महाराज सर्वमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते। भवान्हि गुरुरस्माकं परमं च परायणम् ॥१-१८७-११॥

(Thus the truth, O great king, all this I speak to you. You indeed are the teacher of us, the supreme and the refuge.)

tataḥ sa drupado rājā harṣavyākulalocanaḥ। prativaktuṃ tadā yuktaṃ nāśakat taṃ yudhiṣṭhiram ॥1-187-12॥

[यत्नेन (yatnena) - with effort; तु (tu) - but; सः (saḥ) - he; तं (taṃ) - that; हर्षं (harṣam) - joy; संनिगृह्य (saṃnigṛhya) - having restrained; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes; अनुरूपं (anurūpam) - appropriate; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - the king; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - to Yudhishthira;]
(But he, the scorcher of foes, having restrained that joy with effort, then the king appropriately replied to Yudhishthira.)

पप्रच्छ चैनं धर्मात्मा यथा ते प्रद्रुताः पुरा। स तस्मै सर्वमाचख्यावानुपूर्व्येण पाण्डवः ॥१-१८७-१४॥

(That having heard, Drupada the king, the speech of Kuntī's son, censured then Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the lord of men.)
Having heard that, King Drupada, after listening to the words of Kuntī's son, then censured Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the lord of men.
आश्वासयामास च तं कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम्। प्रतिजज्ञे च राज्याय द्रुपदो वदतां वरः ॥१-१८७-१६॥
āśvāsayāmāsa ca taṃ kuntīputraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। pratijajñe ca rājyāya drupado vadatāṃ varaḥ ॥1-187-16॥

(And caused to be consoled him, Kuntī's son Yudhiṣṭhira. And Drupada, the best of speakers, promised for the kingdom.)

अहं चाप्यनिविष्टो वै भीमसेनश्च पाण्डवः। पार्थेन विजिता चैषा रत्नभूता च ते सुता ॥१-१८७-२३॥

(I and also not settled indeed Bhīmasena and the Pāṇḍava; by Pārtha conquered and this become a jewel and your daughter.)
I, as well as the unsettled Bhīmasena, the Pāṇḍava, have been conquered by Pārtha; and this daughter of yours has become a jewel.
एष नः समयो राजन्रत्नस्य सहभोजनम्। न च तं हातुमिच्छामः समयं राजसत्तम ॥१-१८७-२४॥
eṣa naḥ samayo rājanratnasya sahabhojanam। na ca taṃ hātumicchāmaḥ samayaṃ rājasattama ॥1-187-24॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; नः (naḥ) - our; समयः (samayaḥ) - time; राजन् (rājan) - O king; रत्नस्य (ratnasya) - of the jewel; सह (saha) - together; भोजनम् (bhojanam) - eating; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तं (taṃ) - that; हातुम् (hātum) - to abandon; इच्छामः (icchāmaḥ) - we wish; समयम् (samayam) - time; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best of kings;]
(This is our time, O king, for eating together with the jewel. And we do not wish to abandon that time, O best of kings.)
O king, this is our time to dine together with the jewel, and we do not wish to give up that time, O best of kings.
सर्वेषां धर्मतः कृष्णा महिषी नो भविष्यति। आनुपूर्व्येण सर्वेषां गृह्णातु ज्वलने करम् ॥१-१८७-२५॥
sarveṣāṃ dharmataḥ kṛṣṇā mahiṣī no bhaviṣyati। ānupūrvyeṇa sarveṣāṃ gṛhṇātu jvalane karam ॥1-187-25॥

(Of one (man), many queens are appointed, O joy of the Kurus. Of one (woman), many men are never ordained at any time.)
O Kurunandana, a single man may have many wives, but a single woman is never permitted to have many husbands.
लोकवेदविरुद्धं त्वं नाधर्मं धार्मिकः शुचिः। कर्तुमर्हसि कौन्तेय कस्मात्ते बुद्धिरीदृशी ॥१-१८७-२७॥
lokavedaviruddhaṃ tvaṃ nādharmaṃ dhārmikaḥ śuciḥ। kartumarhasi kaunteya kasmātte buddhirīdṛśī ॥1-187-27॥

(You, righteous and pure, ought not to do what is opposed to the world and the Veda, O son of Kunti. Why is your intellect such?)
O son of Kunti, you are righteous and pure; you should not perform what is opposed to the world and the Veda. Why has your mind become like this?

न मे वागनृतं प्राह नाधर्मे धीयते मतिः। एवं चैव वदत्यम्बा मम चैव मनोगतम् ॥१-१८७-२९॥
na me vāganṛtaṃ prāha nādharme dhīyate matiḥ। evaṃ caiva vadaty ambā mama caiva manogatam ॥1-187-29॥

(Not my speech spoke falsehood, not in unrighteousness is placed (my) mind. Thus and indeed speaks mother and indeed what is in my mind.)
My speech has never uttered falsehood, nor is my mind set on unrighteousness. Thus my mother speaks, and this is also what is in my heart.
एष धर्मो ध्रुवो राजंश्चरैनमविचारयन्। मा च तेऽत्र विशङ्का भूत्कथञ्चिदपि पार्थिव ॥१-१८७-३०॥
eṣa dharmo dhruvo rājaṃścarainamavicārayan। mā ca te'tra viśaṅkā bhūtkathaṃcidapi pārthiva ॥1-187-30॥

(This dharma is firm, O king, act on this without doubting. And let there not be any doubt here for you in any way, O king.)
O king, this dharma is certain; act upon it without hesitation. Do not let any doubt arise in you here in any way, O king.
