पुरा वै नैमिषारण्ये देवाः सत्रमुपासते। तत्र वैवस्वतो राजञ्शामित्रमकरोत्तदा ॥१-१८९-१॥
purā vai naimiṣāraṇye devāḥ satram upāsate। tatra vaivasvato rājañ śāmitram akarot tadā ॥1-189-1॥

(Formerly indeed in Naimisha forest the gods were engaged in a sacrificial session. There Vaivasvata, O king, then made friendship.)
Once, O king, in the Naimisha forest, the gods were performing a sacrificial session. There, Vaivasvata (Yama) then made a friendship.
ततो यमो दीक्षितस्तत्र राज; न्नामारयत्किञ्चिदपि प्रजाभ्यः। ततः प्रजास्ता बहुला बभूवुः; कालातिपातान्मरणात्प्रहीणाः ॥१-१८९-२॥
tato yamo dīkṣitastatra rāja; nnāmārayatkiñcidapi prajābhyaḥ। tataḥ prajāstā bahulā babhūvuḥ; kālātitpātānmaraṇātprahīṇāḥ ॥1-189-2॥

(Then Yama, having been initiated there, O king, did not cause even a little among the beings to die. Then those beings became numerous, deprived of death due to lapse of time.)

(Then but Śakra (Indra), Varuṇa, Kubera, the Sādhyas, the Rudras, the Vasus, and the Aśvins, and the leader of the world, Prajāpati; came together there the gods and also others.)
Then Śakra (Indra), Varuṇa, Kubera, the Sādhyas, Rudras, Vasus, and the Aśvins, along with Prajāpati, the lord of the world, and other gods, all assembled there.
ततोऽब्रुवँल्लोकगुरुं समेता; भयं नस्तीव्रं मानुषाणां विवृद्ध्या। तस्माद्भयादुद्विजन्तः सुखेप्सवः; प्रयाम सर्वे शरणं भवन्तम् ॥१-१८९-४॥
tato'bruvaṃllokaguruṃ sametā; bhayaṃ nastīvaraṃ mānuṣāṇāṃ vivṛddhyā. tasmādbhāyādudvijantaḥ sukhepsavaḥ; prayāma sarve śaraṇaṃ bhavantam ॥1-189-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they spoke; लोकगुरुम् (lokagurum) - the teacher of the world; समेता (sametā) - having assembled; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; तीव्रम् (tīvram) - intense; मानुषाणाम् (mānuṣāṇām) - of humans; विवृद्ध्या (vivṛddhyā) - by increase; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; उद्विजन्तः (udvijantaḥ) - being agitated; सुख-इप्सवः (sukhepsavaḥ) - desiring happiness; प्रयाम (prayāma) - let us go; सर्वे (sarve) - all; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; भवन्तम् (bhavantam) - to you (who are);]
(From then, having assembled, they spoke to the teacher of the world: "There is no intense fear for humans by increase. Therefore, being agitated from fear, desiring happiness, let us all go to you, the refuge.")
Then, having gathered, they addressed the teacher of the world: "There is no great fear for humans due to growth. Therefore, being disturbed by fear and desiring happiness, let us all seek refuge in you."

किं वो भयं मानुषेभ्यो यूयं सर्वे यदामराः। मा वो मर्त्यसकाशाद्वै भयं भवतु कर्हिचित् ॥१-१८९-५॥
kiṃ vo bhayaṃ mānuṣebhyo yūyaṃ sarve yadāmarāḥ। mā vo martyasakāśād vai bhayaṃ bhavatu karhicit ॥1-189-5॥
[किं (kiṃ) - what; वः (vaḥ) - to you (all); भयम् (bhayam) - fear; मानुषेभ्यः (mānuṣebhyaḥ) - from men; यूयम् (yūyam) - you (all); सर्वे (sarve) - all; यदा (yadā) - when; अमराः (amarāḥ) - immortal ones; मा (mā) - not; वः (vaḥ) - to you (all); मर्त्यसकाशात् (martyasakāśāt) - from the presence of mortals; वै (vai) - indeed; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; भवतु (bhavatu) - may be; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - at any time;]
(What fear is there for you from men, you all who are immortal? Let there not be, indeed, any fear for you from the presence of mortals at any time.)
Why should you, who are all immortals, have any fear from men? May you never have any fear from mortals at any time.
देवा ऊचुः॥

The gods said.
मर्त्या ह्यमर्त्याः संवृत्ता न विशेषोऽस्ति कश्चन। अविशेषादुद्विजन्तो विशेषार्थमिहागताः ॥१-१८९-६॥
martyā hy amartyāḥ saṃvṛttā na viśeṣo'sti kaścana| aviśeṣād udvijanto viśeṣārtham ihāgatāḥ ॥1-189-6॥
[मर्त्याः (martyāḥ) - mortals; हि (hi) - indeed; अमर्त्याः (amartyāḥ) - immortals; संवृत्ताः (saṃvṛttāḥ) - have become; न (na) - not; विशेषः (viśeṣaḥ) - distinction; अस्ति (asti) - exists; कश्चन (kaścana) - any; अविशेषात् (aviśeṣāt) - from non-distinction; उद्विजन्तः (udvijantaḥ) - being agitated; विशेषार्थम् (viśeṣārtham) - for the sake of distinction; इह (iha) - here; आगताः (āgatāḥ) - have come;]
(Mortals indeed have become immortals; there is no distinction whatsoever. Being agitated by non-distinction, for the sake of distinction, they have come here.)
Mortals have indeed become like immortals; there is no real distinction. Disturbed by the lack of distinction, they have come here seeking differentiation.

वैवस्वतो व्यापृतः सत्रहेतो; स्तेन त्विमे न म्रियन्ते मनुष्याः। तस्मिन्नेकाग्रे कृतसर्वकार्ये; तत एषां भवितैवान्तकालः ॥१-१८९-७॥
vaivasvato vyāpṛtaḥ satraheto; stena tvime na mriyante manuṣyāḥ. tasminnekāgre kṛtasarvakārye; tata eṣāṃ bhavitaivāntakālaḥ ॥1-189-7॥
[वैवस्वतः (vaivasvataḥ) - Yama; व्यापृतः (vyāpṛtaḥ) - engaged; busy; occupied; सत्रहेतोः (satrahetoḥ) - for the purpose of a sacrifice; for the reason of a ritual; स्तेन (stena) - thieves; तु (tu) - but; इमे (ime) - these; न (na) - not; म्रियन्ते (mriyante) - die; perish; मनुष्याः (manuṣyāḥ) - men; humans; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; एकाग्रे (ekāgre) - single-minded; concentrated; कृतसर्वकार्ये (kṛtasarvakārye) - having accomplished all tasks; ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; will happen; एव (eva) - indeed; surely; अन्तकालः (antakālaḥ) - end time; time of death;]
(Yama is engaged for the purpose of a sacrifice; but these thieves, these men, do not die. When that single-minded one has accomplished all tasks, then indeed for these will be the end time.)
Yama is occupied with a sacrificial duty; therefore, these thieves, these men, do not die. When that single-minded one has completed all his tasks, then surely the time of their end will come.
वैवस्वतस्यापि तनुर्विभूता; वीर्येण युष्माकमुत प्रयुक्ता। सैषामन्तो भविता ह्यन्तकाले; तनुर्हि वीर्यं भविता नरेषु ॥१-१८९-८॥
vaivasvatasya api tanur vibhūtā; vīryeṇa yuṣmākam uta prayuktā. saiṣām anto bhavitā hi antakāle; tanuḥ hi vīryaṃ bhavitā nareṣu ॥1-189-8॥
[वैवस्वतस्य (vaivasvatasya) - of Vaivasvata (Yama); अपि (api) - also; तनुः (tanuḥ) - body; विभूता (vibhūtā) - manifested; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - by the power; युष्माकम् (yuṣmākam) - of you (plural); उत (uta) - and; प्रयुक्ता (prayuktā) - employed; स (sa) - that; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; अन्तः (antaḥ) - end; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; हि (hi) - indeed; अन्तकाले (antakāle) - at the end time; तनुः (tanuḥ) - body; हि (hi) - indeed; वीर्यं (vīryaṃ) - power; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; नरेषु (nareṣu) - among men;]
(The body of Vaivasvata also manifested, by the power of you (all), and employed. That of these, the end will be indeed at the end time; the body indeed, the power will be among men.)
Even the manifested body of Vaivasvata (Yama), empowered by your strength, has been employed. At the destined end time, that body will reach its conclusion; indeed, the power will manifest among men.

ततस्तु ते पूर्वजदेववाक्यं; श्रुत्वा देवा यत्र देवा यजन्ते। समासीनास्ते समेता महाबला; भागीरथ्यां ददृशुः पुण्डरीकम् ॥१-१८९-९॥
tatastu te pūrvajadevavākyaṃ; śrutvā devā yatra devā yajante। samāsīnāste sametā mahābalā; bhāgīrathyāṃ dadṛśuḥ puṇḍarīkam ॥1-189-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; पूर्वजदेववाक्यं (pūrvajadevavākyaṃ) - ancient gods' words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; यत्र (yatra) - where; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; यजन्ते (yajante) - worship; समासीनाः (samāsīnāḥ) - seated; ते (te) - they; समेता (sametā) - assembled; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - of great might; भागीरथ्याम् (bhāgīrathyām) - in the Bhagirathi (Ganga); ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; पुण्डरीकम् (puṇḍarīkam) - lotus;]
(Then but they, having heard the ancient gods' words, the gods where the gods worship, seated they assembled of great might, in the Bhagirathi saw a lotus.)
Then, having heard the words of the ancient gods, those mighty gods, assembled and seated where the gods worship, saw a lotus in the Bhagirathi.
दृष्ट्वा च तद्विस्मितास्ते बभूवु; स्तेषामिन्द्रस्तत्र शूरो जगाम। सोऽपश्यद्योषामथ पावकप्रभां; यत्र गङ्गा सततं सम्प्रसूता ॥१-१८९-१०॥
dṛṣṭvā ca tadvismitās te babhūvu; steṣām indras tatra śūro jagāma. so'paśyad yoṣām atha pāvakaprabhāṃ; yatra gaṅgā satataṃ samprasūtā ॥1-189-10॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; विस्मिताः (vismitāḥ) - astonished; ते (te) - they; बभूवु (babhūvu) - became; स्तेषाम् (steṣām) - among them; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; तत्र (tatra) - there; शूरः (śūraḥ) - hero; जगाम (jagāma) - went; सः (saḥ) - he; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; योषाम् (yoṣām) - woman; अथ (atha) - then; पावकप्रभाम् (pāvakaprabhām) - having the radiance of fire; यत्र (yatra) - where; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; सततम् (satatam) - always; सम्प्रसूता (samprasūtā) - constantly produced;]
(Having seen that, they became astonished; among them, Indra, the hero, went there. He saw a woman then, having the radiance of fire, where Gaṅgā is always constantly produced.)
Seeing that, they were amazed; among them, Indra, the valiant one, went there. He then saw a woman shining like fire, at the place where Gaṅgā is ever flowing.
सा तत्र योषा रुदती जलार्थिनी; गङ्गां देवीं व्यवगाह्यावतिष्ठत्। तस्याश्रुबिन्दुः पतितो जले वै; तत्पद्ममासीदथ तत्र काञ्चनम् ॥१-१८९-११॥
sā tatra yoṣā rudatī jalārthinī; gaṅgāṃ devīṃ vyavagāhyāvatiṣṭhat. tasyāśrubinduḥ patito jale vai; tatpadmam āsīd atha tatra kāñcanam ॥1-189-11॥
[सा (sā) - she; तत्र (tatra) - there; योषा (yoṣā) - woman; रुदती (rudatī) - weeping; जलार्थिनी (jalārthinī) - seeking water; गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - Ganga; देवीम् (devīm) - goddess; व्यवगाह्य (vyavagāhya) - having entered; अवतिष्ठत् (avatiṣṭhat) - stood; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her; अश्रुबिन्दुः (aśrubinduḥ) - tear-drop; पतितः (patitaḥ) - fallen; जले (jale) - in water; वै (vai) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; पद्मम् (padmam) - lotus; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; अथ (atha) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; काञ्चनम् (kāñcanam) - golden;]
(She there, the woman, weeping, seeking water; having entered the goddess Ganga, stood. Her tear-drop indeed fell in the water; that lotus then was there golden.)
There, that woman, weeping and seeking water, entered the goddess Ganga and stood. Her tear-drop fell into the water, and then there appeared a golden lotus.
तदद्भुतं प्रेक्ष्य वज्री तदानी; मपृच्छत्तां योषितमन्तिकाद्वै। का त्वं कथं रोदिषि कस्य हेतो; र्वाक्यं तथ्यं कामयेह ब्रवीहि ॥१-१८९-१२॥
tadadbhutaṃ prekṣya vajrī tadānīm apṛcchat tāṃ yoṣitam antikād vai | kā tvaṃ kathaṃ rodiṣi kasya hetoḥ vākyam tathyaṃ kāmayeha bravīhi ||1-189-12||
[तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; वज्री (vajrī) - the wielder of the thunderbolt; तदानीम् (tadānīm) - at that time; अपृच्छत् (apṛcchat) - asked; ताम् (tām) - her; योषितम् (yoṣitam) - woman; अन्तिकात् (antikāt) - from near; वै (vai) - indeed; का (kā) - who; त्वम् (tvam) - you; कथम् (katham) - how; रोदिषि (rodiṣi) - are you weeping; कस्य (kasya) - for whom; हेतोः (hetoḥ) - for the reason; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - statement; तथ्यम् (tathyaṃ) - true; कामये (kāmaye) - I desire; इह (iha) - here; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - speak;]
(Having seen that wonderful (thing), the wielder of the thunderbolt at that time asked that woman from near indeed: "Who are you? How are you weeping? For whom and for what reason? I desire a true statement here, speak.")
Seeing that wonder, Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt, approached the woman and asked: "Who are you? Why are you weeping? For whom and for what reason? Tell me the truth here."

त्वं वेत्स्यसे मामिह यास्मि शक्र; यदर्थं चाहं रोदिमि मन्दभाग्या। आगच्छ राजन्पुरतोऽहं गमिष्ये; द्रष्टासि तद्रोदिमि यत्कृतेऽहम् ॥१-१८९-१३॥
tvaṃ vetsyase mām iha yāsmi śakra; yadartham ca ahaṃ rodimi mandabhāgyā. āgaccha rājan purataḥ ahaṃ gamiṣye; draṣṭāsi tat rodimi yat kṛte aham ॥1-189-13॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; वेत्स्यसे (vetsyase) - will know; माम् (mām) - me; इह (iha) - here; यास्मि (yāsmi) - I am going; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; यदर्थम् (yadartham) - for what purpose; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; रोदिमि (rodimi) - weep; मन्दभाग्या (mandabhāgyā) - of little fortune; आगच्छ (āgaccha) - come; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पुरतः (purataḥ) - in front; अहम् (aham) - I; गमिष्ये (gamiṣye) - shall go; द्रष्टासि (draṣṭāsi) - you will see; तत् (tat) - that; रोदिमि (rodimi) - I weep; यत्कृते (yat kṛte) - for whose sake; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(You will know me here, O Śakra, where I am going; for what purpose and I, of little fortune, weep. Come, O king, I shall go in front; you will see that for whose sake I weep.)
O Śakra, you will know me here, where I am going and for what reason I, unfortunate, am weeping. Come, O king, I will go ahead; you will see that for which I am weeping.

तां गच्छन्तीमन्वगच्छत्तदानीं; सोऽपश्यदारात्तरुणं दर्शनीयम्। सिंहासनस्थं युवतीसहायं; क्रीडन्तमक्षैर्गिरिराजमूर्ध्नि ॥१-१८९-१४॥
tāṃ gacchantīṃ anvagacchat tadānīṃ; so'paśyad ārāt taruṇaṃ darśanīyam. siṃhāsanasthaṃ yuvatī-sahāyaṃ; krīḍantam akṣair girirāja-mūrdhni ॥1-189-14॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; गच्छन्तीम् (gacchantīm) - going; अन्वगच्छत् (anvagacchat) - followed; तदानीम् (tadānīm) - at that time; सः (saḥ) - he; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; आरात् (ārāt) - from afar; तरुणम् (taruṇam) - young man; दर्शनीयम् (darśanīyam) - handsome; सिंहासनस्थम् (siṃhāsanastham) - seated on a throne; युवतीसहायम् (yuvatī-sahāyam) - with young women as companions; क्रीडन्तम् (krīḍantam) - playing; अक्षैः (akṣaiḥ) - with dice; गिरिराजमूर्ध्नि (girirāja-mūrdhni) - on the summit of the king of mountains;]
(Her going, he followed at that time; he saw from afar a young, handsome man, seated on a throne, with young women as companions, playing with dice on the summit of the king of mountains.)

तमब्रवीद्देवराजो ममेदं; त्वं विद्धि विश्वं भुवनं वशे स्थितम्। ईशोऽहमस्मीति समन्युरब्रवी; द्दृष्ट्वा तमक्षैः सुभृशं प्रमत्तम् ॥१-१८९-१५॥
tam abravīd devarājo mamedam; tvaṃ viddhi viśvaṃ bhuvanaṃ vaśe sthitam। īśo'ham asmīti samanyur abravī; dṛṣṭvā tam akṣaiḥ subhṛśaṃ pramattam ॥1-189-15॥

(The king of the gods said to him: "This is mine; you know (that) the whole world is situated under (my) control." The angry (one) said thus: "I am the lord," having seen him excessively intoxicated with dice.)

(But having looked at the angered Śakra, the god laughed and slowly looked at Śakra. Then the king of gods became stunned, being looked at like a thief, and stood as if like a pillar.)

(Then Śakra, just touched by her but, with loosened limbs, became fallen on the earth. Him the venerable one of fierce energy said: "Do not thus again, O Śakra, do in any way.")
Then Śakra (Indra), as soon as he was touched by her, his limbs loosened and he fell to the ground. The venerable one of fierce energy said to him: "Do not ever do so again in any way, O Śakra."
विवर्तयैनं च महाद्रिराजं; बलं च वीर्यं च तवाप्रमेयम्। विवृत्य चैवाविश मध्यमस्य; यत्रासते त्वद्विधाः सूर्यभासः ॥१-१८९-१९॥

Then the god Śiva, opening his eyes in anger, addressed Indra: "Enter this cave, O Śatakratu, since you have disrespected me from your childhood in the past."
उक्तस्त्वेवं विभुना देवराजः; प्रवेपमानो भृशमेवाभिषङ्गात्। स्रस्तैरङ्गैरनिलेनेव नुन्न; मश्वत्थपत्रं गिरिराजमूर्ध्नि ॥१-१८९-२२॥

(Thus spoken by the lord, the king of the gods, trembling greatly indeed from contact, with loosened limbs, like a fig leaf shaken by the wind on the summit of the king of mountains.)

स प्राञ्जलिर्विनतेनाननेन; प्रवेपमानः सहसैवमुक्तः। उवाच चेदं बहुरूपमुग्रं; द्रष्टा शेषस्य भगवंस्त्वं भवाद्य ॥१-१८९-२३॥

(He, with joined palms and bowed head, trembling, suddenly thus addressed (him), and said: "O Lord, you, the seer of the remainder, today be (the one) to see this terrible form of many shapes.")

तमब्रवीदुग्रधन्वा प्रहस्य; नैवंशीलाः शेषमिहाप्नुवन्ति। एतेऽप्येवं भवितारः पुरस्ता; त्तस्मादेतां दरिमाविश्य शेध्वम् ॥१-१८९-२४॥

(Him said the fierce-bowed (one), having laughed; not of such nature do the rest here attain. These also thus will become in the future; therefore, having entered this doorway, sleep.)
The fierce-bowed one laughed and said to him, "Those of such nature do not attain the rest here. These too will become so in the future; therefore, enter this doorway and sleep."
शेषोऽप्येवं भविता वो न संशयो; योनिं सर्वे मानुषीमाविशध्वम्। तत्र यूयं कर्म कृत्वाविषह्यं; बहूनन्यान्निधनं प्रापयित्वा ॥१-१८९-२५॥
śeṣo'py evaṃ bhavitā vo na saṃśayo; yoniṃ sarve mānuṣīm āviśadhvam. tatra yūyaṃ karma kṛtvāviṣahyaṃ; bahūn anyān nidhanaṃ prāpayitvā ॥1-189-25॥

(The remainder also thus will be of you, no doubt; all (of you) enter the human womb. There, you, having performed irresistible action, having caused the destruction of many others.)
There is no doubt that the rest of you will also be thus; all of you will enter human wombs. There, after performing irresistible deeds, you will cause the destruction of many others.
आगन्तारः पुनरेवेन्द्रलोकं; स्वकर्मणा पूर्वजितं महार्हम्। सर्वं मया भाषितमेतदेवं; कर्तव्यमन्यद्विविधार्थवच्च ॥१-१८९-२६॥
āgantāraḥ punarevendralokaṃ; svakarmaṇā pūrvajitaṃ mahārham। sarvaṃ mayā bhāṣitametadevaṃ; kartavyamanyadvividhārthavacca ॥1-189-26॥

gamiṣyāmo mānuṣaṃ devalokā; ddurādaro vihito yatra mokṣaḥ। devāstv asmān ādadhīrañ jananyāṃ; dharmo vāyur maghavān aśvinau ca ॥1-189-27॥

(We shall go to the human world, O gods of the divine worlds; where liberation, hard to bear, is established. O gods, may you place us in the mother; righteousness, wind, Maghavan (Indra), and the Ashvins.)
We will go to the world of humans, O gods of the divine realms, where difficult-to-attain liberation is established. O gods, may you place us in the womb; let righteousness, the wind, Indra, and the Ashvins (twin gods) be with us.

etacchrutvā vajrapāṇir vacastu; devaśreṣṭhaṃ punarevedam āha. vīryeṇāhaṃ puruṣaṃ kāryaheto; r dadyāmeṣāṃ pañcamaṃ matprasūtam ॥1-189-28॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वज्रपाणिः (vajrapāṇiḥ) - Vajrapāṇi (Indra, the one with the thunderbolt in hand); वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; तु (tu) - but; देवश्रेष्ठम् (devaśreṣṭham) - O best of the gods; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; इदम् (idam) - this; आह (āha) - said; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - by strength; अहम् (aham) - I; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - man; कार्यहेतोः (kāryahetoḥ) - for the sake of the task; दद्याम् (dadyām) - would give; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; पञ्चमम् (pañcamam) - the fifth; मत्प्रसूतम् (matprasūtam) - born from me;]
(Having heard this, Vajrapāṇi (Indra) but spoke; O best of the gods, again indeed said this: By strength, I, for the sake of the task, would give a man, the fifth, born from me, of these.)
Hearing this, Indra (Vajrapāṇi) spoke again to the best of the gods: "By my strength, for the purpose at hand, I will give a fifth man, born from me, among these."
तेषां कामं भगवानुग्रधन्वा; प्रादादिष्टं सन्निसर्गाद्यथोक्तम्। तां चाप्येषां योषितं लोककान्तां; श्रियं भार्यां व्यदधान्मानुषेषु ॥१-१८९-२९॥

(Of them, their desire, the Lord with fierce bow gave as commanded from the proper source as stated. Her also, of these, the woman beloved of the world, prosperity, wife, he bestowed among men.)

(Having obtained that divine, immeasurable illusion, and her, indeed, excellent, like prosperity having form; fit for them by form, splendor, and fame; the king of kings saw the prosperous wife.)

(He, having seen that great wondrous form, grasped the feet of the son of Satyavati. "This is not surprising, O supreme sage, in you," thus, with clear mind, he said to him.)

(There was in the forest of austerities a certain daughter of the great-souled sage. That maiden, beautiful and chaste, did not obtain a husband.)

तोषयामास तपसा सा किलोग्रेण शङ्करम्। तामुवाचेश्वरः प्रीतो वृणु काममिति स्वयम् ॥१-१८९-४२॥

(He, the lord of the gods, then graciously gave her that boon: "Five excellent husbands will be yours," thus (said) Śaṅkara.)
