Pancharatra: Arjuna's piligramage to South and encounter with crocodile.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततः समुद्रे तीर्थानि दक्षिणे भरतर्षभः । अभ्यगच्छत्सुपुण्यानि शोभितानि तपस्विभिः ॥१-२०८-१॥
tataḥ samudre tīrthāni dakṣiṇe bharatarṣabhaḥ । abhyagacchatsu puṇyāni śobhitāni tapasvibhiḥ ॥1-208-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; समुद्रे (samudre) - in the ocean; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; दक्षिणे (dakṣiṇe) - in the south; भरतर्षभः (bharatarṣabhaḥ) - bull among the Bharatas; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached; सुपुण्यानि (su-puṇyāni) - very holy; शोभितानि (śobhitāni) - adorned; तपस्विभिः (tapasvibhiḥ) - by ascetics;]
(Then the bull among the Bharatas approached the holy places in the southern ocean, very holy, adorned by ascetics.)
Then the illustrious descendant of Bharata proceeded to the sacred places on the southern ocean, which were highly meritorious and graced by ascetics.
वर्जयन्ति स्म तीर्थानि पञ्च तत्र तु तापसाः । आचीर्णानि तु यान्यासन्पुरस्तात्तु तपस्विभिः ॥१-२०८-२॥

(They indeed avoided five fords there, but the ascetics, but those which had been practiced before by ascetics.)

अगस्त्यतीर्थं सौभद्रं पौलोमं च सुपावनम् । कारन्धमं प्रसन्नं च हयमेधफलं च यत् ॥ भारद्वाजस्य तीर्थं च पापप्रशमनं महत् ॥१-२०८-३॥

विविक्तान्युपलक्ष्याथ तानि तीर्थानि पाण्डवः । दृष्ट्वा च वर्ज्यमानानि मुनिभिर्धर्मबुद्धिभिः ॥१-२०८-४॥
viviktānyupalakṣyātha tāni tīrthāni pāṇḍavaḥ । dṛṣṭvā ca varjyamānāni munibhir dharmabuddhibhiḥ ॥1-208-4॥
[विविक्तानि (viviktāni) - solitary; separated; उपलक्ष्य (upalakṣya) - having observed; having noticed; अथ (atha) - then; तानि (tāni) - those; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - sacred places; holy spots; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; (here, Yudhiṣṭhira); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; वर्ज्यमानानि (varjyamānāni) - being avoided; being shunned; मुनिभिः (munibhiḥ) - by sages; धर्मबुद्धिभिः (dharmabuddhibhiḥ) - by those whose intellect is established in dharma;]
(Having observed the solitary ones, then those sacred places, the son of Pāṇḍu, having seen also those being avoided by sages whose intellect is established in dharma.)
Then, having noticed the solitary sacred places, Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Pāṇḍu, saw those that were being avoided by sages devoted to dharma.
तपस्विनस्ततोऽपृच्छत्प्राज्ञलिः कुरुनन्दनः । तीर्थानीमानि वर्ज्यन्ते किमर्थं ब्रह्मवादिभिः ॥१-२०८-५॥
tapasvinastato'pṛcchat prājñaliḥ kurunandanaḥ । tīrthānīmāni varjyante kimarthaṃ brahmavādibhiḥ ॥1-208-5॥

ग्राहाः पञ्च वसन्त्येषु हरन्ति च तपोधनान् । अत एतानि वर्ज्यन्ते तीर्थानि कुरुनन्दन ॥१-२०८-६॥
grāhāḥ pañca vasantyeṣu haranti ca tapodhanān | ata etāni varjyante tīrthāni kurunandana ||1-208-6||

teṣāṃ śrutvā mahābāhur vāryamāṇas tapodhanaiḥ । jagāma tāni tīrthāni draṣṭuṃ puruṣasattamaḥ ॥1-208-7॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; वार्यमाणः (vāryamāṇaḥ) - being restrained; तपोधनैः (tapodhanaiḥ) - by ascetics (whose wealth is austerity); जगाम (jagāma) - he went; तानि (tāni) - those; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; पुरुषसत्तमः (puruṣasattamaḥ) - the best among men;]
(Of them having heard, the mighty-armed, being restrained by ascetics (whose wealth is austerity), he went to see those holy places, the best among men.)

ततः सौभद्रमासाद्य महर्षेस्तीर्थमुत्तमम् । विगाह्य तरसा शूरः स्नानं चक्रे परन्तपः ॥१-२०८-८॥
tataḥ saubhadram āsādya maharṣeḥ tīrtham uttamam । vigāhya tarasā śūraḥ snānaṃ cakre parantapaḥ ॥1-208-8॥

(Then Saubhadra, having reached the excellent holy place of the great sage, having quickly entered, the hero performed bathing, the scorcher of foes.)
Then Saubhadra (Arjuna), having reached the excellent holy place of the great sage, quickly plunged in and performed his bath, he who scorches his enemies.
अथ तं पुरुषव्याघ्रमन्तर्जलचरो महान् । निजग्राह जले ग्राहः कुन्तीपुत्रं धनञ्जयम् ॥१-२०८-९॥
atha taṃ puruṣavyāghram antarjalacaro mahān । nijagrāha jale grāhaḥ kuntīputraṃ dhanañjayam ॥1-208-9॥

(Then the great dweller in the water, the crocodile, seized him, the tiger among men, the son of Kuntī, Dhanañjaya, in the water.)
Then the mighty crocodile living in the water seized Dhanañjaya, the son of Kuntī, who was like a tiger among men, while he was in the water.
स तमादाय कौन्तेयो विस्फुरन्तं जलेचरम् । उदतिष्ठन्महाबाहुर्बलेन बलिनां वरः ॥१-२०८-१०॥
sa tam-ādāya kaunteyaḥ visphurantaṃ jale-caram । udatishṭhan-mahā-bāhur-balena balināṃ varaḥ ॥1-208-10॥
[स (sa) - he; तम् (tam) - him; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; विस्फुरन्तम् (visphurantam) - quivering; जलेचरम् (jale-caram) - aquatic creature; उदतिष्ठत् (udatiṣṭhat) - rose up; महाबाहुः (mahā-bāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; बलेन (balena) - by strength; बलिनाम् (balinām) - of the strong; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
(He, having taken him, the son of Kunti, the quivering aquatic creature, rose up, the mighty-armed, by strength, the best of the strong.)
The mighty-armed son of Kunti, best among the strong, seized the quivering aquatic creature and rose up by his strength.
उत्कृष्ट एव तु ग्राहः सोऽर्जुनेन यशस्विना । बभूव नारी कल्याणी सर्वाभरणभूषिता ॥१-२०८-११॥
utkṛṣṭa eva tu grāhaḥ so'rjunena yaśasvinā । babhūva nārī kalyāṇī sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā ॥1-208-11॥

दीप्यमाना श्रिया राजन्दिव्यरूपा मनोरमा ॥१-२०८-११॥

तदद्भुतं महद्दृष्ट्वा कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः । तां स्त्रियं परमप्रीत इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१-२०८-१२॥
tadadbhutaṃ mahad dṛṣṭvā kuntīputro dhanañjayaḥ । tāṃ striyaṃ paramaprīta idaṃ vacanam abravīt ॥1-208-12॥

का वै त्वमसि कल्याणि कुतो वासि जलेचरी । किमर्थं च महत्पापमिदं कृतवती पुरा ॥१-२०८-१३॥
kā vai tvam asi kalyāṇi kuto vā asi jale-carī | kim-artham ca mahat-pāpam idaṃ kṛtavatī purā ||1-208-13||

अप्सरास्मि महाबाहो देवारण्यविचारिणी । इष्टा धनपतेर्नित्यं वर्गा नाम महाबल ॥१-२०८-१४॥
apsarāsmi mahābāho devāraṇyavicāriṇī । iṣṭā dhanapaternityaṃ vargā nāma mahābala ॥1-208-14॥

मम सख्यश्चतस्रोऽन्याः सर्वाः कामगमाः शुभाः । ताभिः सार्धं प्रयातास्मि लोकपालनिवेशनम् ॥१-२०८-१५॥
mama sakhyaś catasro 'nyāḥ sarvāḥ kāmagamāḥ śubhāḥ । tābhiḥ sārdhaṃ prayātāsmi lokapālaniveśanam ॥1-208-15॥

ततः पश्यामहे सर्वा ब्राह्मणं संशितव्रतम् । रूपवन्तमधीयानमेकमेकान्तचारिणम् ॥१-२०८-१६॥
tataḥ paśyāmahe sarvā brāhmaṇaṃ saṃśitavratam । rūpavantam adhīyānam ekam ekāntacāriṇam ॥1-208-16॥

(Of him indeed by austerity, O king, that forest was enveloped by brilliance. Like the sun, he illuminated that entire region.)

(Having seen his austerity of such a kind and his wonderful appearance, indeed (they) descended to that place with the intention to cause an obstacle to the austerity.)

अहं च सौरभेयी च समीची बुद्बुदा लता । यौगपद्येन तं विप्रमभ्यगच्छाम भारत ॥१-२०८-१९॥

गायन्त्यो वै हसन्त्यश्च लोभयन्त्यश्च तं द्विजम् । स च नास्मासु कृतवान्मनो वीर कथञ्चन ॥ नाकम्पत महातेजाः स्थितस्तपसि निर्मले ॥१-२०८-२०॥
gāyantyo vai hasantyaś ca lobhayantyaś ca taṃ dvijam । sa ca nāsmāsu kṛtavān mano vīra kathaṃcana ॥ nākampata mahātejāḥ sthitastapasi nirmale ॥1-208-20॥
[गायन्त्यः (gāyantyaḥ) - singing (feminine plural); वै (vai) - indeed; हसन्त्यः (hasantyaḥ) - laughing (feminine plural); च (ca) - and; लोभयन्त्यः (lobhayantyaḥ) - enticing (feminine plural); च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him; द्विजम् (dvijam) - the twice-born (brāhmaṇa); स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; अस्मासु (asmāsu) - towards us; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - made; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; वीर (vīra) - hero; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; न (na) - not; अकम्पत (akampata) - was shaken; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great energy; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - steadfast; तपसि (tapasi) - in penance; निर्मले (nirmale) - pure; ॥१-२०८-२०॥ (॥1-208-20॥) - ;]
(Singing indeed and laughing and enticing him, the twice-born; he, however, did not direct his mind towards us, O hero, in any way. The one of great energy was not shaken, steadfast in pure penance.)
The women sang, laughed, and tried to entice the twice-born sage, but he did not turn his mind to any of us in any way, O hero. The great-souled one remained unshaken, steadfast in his pure penance.
सोऽशपत्कुपितोऽस्मांस्तु ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियर्षभ । ग्राहभूता जले यूयं चरिष्यध्वं शतं समाः ॥१-२०८-२१॥
so'śapat kupito'smāṁs tu brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyarṣabha | grāhabhūtā jale yūyaṁ cariṣyadhvaṁ śataṁ samāḥ ॥1-208-21॥

(He, angry, cursed us, but the brāhmaṇa, O bull among kṣatriyas: having become crocodiles in the water, you all shall move about for a hundred years.)
He, being angry, cursed us, O best of kṣatriyas: "You all shall become crocodiles in the water and remain there for a hundred years."
