Pancharatra: Krishna notices Arjuna's desire for Bhadra and asks him to abduct her.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततः कतिपयाहस्य तस्मिन्रैवतके गिरौ। वृष्ण्यन्धकानामभवत्सुमहानुत्सवो नृप ॥१-२११-१॥
tataḥ katipayāhasya tasmin raivatake girau। vṛṣṇy-andhakānām abhavat sumahān utsavo nṛpa ॥1-211-1॥

(Then, after a few days, on that Raivataka mountain, O king, there was a very great festival of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas.)
Then, after a few days, O king, a grand festival of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas was held on the Raivataka mountain.
तत्र दानं ददुर्वीरा ब्राह्मणानां सहस्रशः। भोजवृष्ण्यन्धकाश्चैव महे तस्य गिरेस्तदा ॥१-२११-२॥
tatra dānaṃ dadurvīrā brāhmaṇānāṃ sahasraśaḥ। bhojavṛṣṇyandhakāścaiva mahe tasya girestadā ॥1-211-2॥

(There, the heroes gave gifts to the Brāhmaṇas by thousands; the Bhojas, Vṛṣṇis, and Andhakas indeed (gave) to the great one of that mountain then.)
There, the heroes gave thousands of gifts to the Brāhmaṇas; at that time, the Bhojas, Vṛṣṇis, and Andhakas also offered to the great one of that mountain.
प्रासादै रत्नचित्रैश्च गिरेस्तस्य समन्ततः। स देशः शोभितो राजन्दीपवृक्षैश्च सर्वशः ॥१-२११-३॥
prāsādai ratnacitraiś ca gires tasya samantataḥ। sa deśaḥ śobhito rājandīpavṛkṣaiś ca sarvaśaḥ॥1-211-3॥

(By palaces, by gem-adorned (things), and all around that mountain; that region was adorned entirely by king-lamp trees and (other things).)
That region all around the mountain was splendidly adorned with palaces, gem-studded decorations, and was entirely filled with king-lamp trees.
वादित्राणि च तत्र स्म वादकाः समवादयन्। ननृतुर्नर्तकाश्चैव जगुर्गानानि गायनाः ॥१-२११-४॥
vāditrāṇi ca tatra sma vādakāḥ samavādayan। nanṛturnartakāścaiva jagurgānāni gāyanāḥ ॥1-211-4॥

There, the players played musical instruments together; the dancers danced, and the singers sang songs.
अलङ्कृताः कुमाराश्च वृष्णीनां सुमहौजसः। यानैर्हाटकचित्राङ्गैश्चञ्चूर्यन्ते स्म सर्वशः ॥१-२११-५॥
alaṅkṛtāḥ kumārāś ca vṛṣṇīnāṃ sumahaujasaḥ। yānair hāṭaka-citrāṅgaiś cañcūryante sma sarvaśaḥ॥1-211-5॥
[अलङ्कृताः (alaṅkṛtāḥ) - adorned; decorated; कुमाराः (kumārāḥ) - princes; sons; च (ca) - and; वृष्णीनाम् (vṛṣṇīnāṃ) - of the Vṛṣṇis; सुमहौजसः (sumahaujasaḥ) - of great might; very powerful; यानैः (yānaiḥ) - by vehicles; by chariots; हाटकचित्राङ्गैः (hāṭaka-citrāṅgaiḥ) - with golden and variegated parts; च (ca) - and; अञ्चूर्यन्ते (cañcūryante) - were being moved about; were being shaken; स्म (sma) - indeed; (past tense marker); सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - on all sides; everywhere;]

पौराश्च पादचारेण यानैरुच्चावचैस्तथा। सदाराः सानुयात्राश्च शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥१-२११-६॥
paurāś ca pādacāreṇa yānair uccāvacais tathā। sadārāḥ sānuyātrāś ca śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ॥1-211-6॥

Citizens, both on foot and in various vehicles, accompanied by their wives and followers, came in hundreds and thousands.
ततो हलधरः क्षीबो रेवतीसहितः प्रभुः। अनुगम्यमानो गन्धर्वैरचरत्तत्र भारत ॥१-२११-७॥
tato haladharaḥ kṣībo revatīsahitaḥ prabhuḥ। anugamyamāno gandharvairacarat tatra bhārata॥1-211-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; हलधरः (haladharaḥ) - the plough-holder; क्षीबः (kṣībaḥ) - intoxicated; रेवती-सहितः (revatī-sahitaḥ) - together with Revati; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; अनुगम्यमानः (anugamyamānaḥ) - being followed; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by the Gandharvas; अचरत् (acarat) - moved about; तत्र (tatra) - there; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then the plough-holder, intoxicated, together with Revati, the lord, being followed by the Gandharvas, moved about there, O Bhārata.)
Then, O Bhārata, the lord Balarāma, intoxicated and accompanied by Revati, wandered there followed by the Gandharvas.
तथैव राजा वृष्णीनामुग्रसेनः प्रतापवान्। उपगीयमानो गन्धर्वैः स्त्रीसहस्रसहायवान् ॥१-२११-८॥
tathaiva rājā vṛṣṇīnām ugraseṇaḥ pratāpavān। upagīyamāno gandharvaiḥ strī-sahasra-sahāyavān ॥1-211-8॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; राजा (rājā) - king; वृष्णीनाम् (vṛṣṇīnām) - of the Vṛṣṇis; उग्रसेनः (ugraseṇaḥ) - Ugrasena; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - possessing majesty; उपगीयमानः (upagīyamānaḥ) - being praised; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by the Gandharvas; स्त्रीसहस्रसहायवान् (strī-sahasra-sahāyavān) - accompanied by a thousand women;]
(In the same way, the king of the Vṛṣṇis, Ugrasena, possessing majesty, being praised by the Gandharvas, accompanied by a thousand women.)
Likewise, King Ugrasena of the Vṛṣṇis, renowned for his majesty, was praised by the Gandharvas and accompanied by a thousand women.
रौक्मिणेयश्च साम्बश्च क्षीबौ समरदुर्मदौ। दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरौ विजह्रातेऽमराविव ॥१-२११-९॥
raukmiṇeyaś ca sāmbaś ca kṣībau samaradurmadau। divyamālyāmbaradharau vijahrāte'marāv iva ॥1-211-9॥

अक्रूरः सारणश्चैव गदो भानुर्विडूरथः। निशठश्चारुदेष्णश्च पृथुर्विपृथुरेव च ॥१-२११-१०॥
akrūraḥ sāraṇaścaiva gado bhānurviḍūrathaḥ| niśaṭhaścārudeṣṇaśca pṛthurvipṛthureva ca ॥1-211-10॥

सत्यकः सात्यकिश्चैव भङ्गकारसहाचरौ। हार्दिक्यः कृतवर्मा च ये चान्ये नानुकीर्तिताः ॥१-२११-११॥
satyakaḥ sātyakiścaiva bhaṅgakārasahācarau। hārdikyaḥ kṛtavarmā ca ye cānye nānukīrtitāḥ ॥1-211-11॥

तदा कोलाहले तस्मिन्वर्तमाने महाशुभे। वासुदेवश्च पार्थश्च सहितौ परिजग्मतुः ॥१-२११-१३॥
tadā kolāhale tasmin vartamāne mahāśubhe। vāsudevaś ca pārthaś ca sahitau parijagmatūḥ ॥1-211-13॥

तत्र चङ्क्रम्यमाणौ तौ वासुदेवसुतां शुभाम्। अलङ्कृतां सखीमध्ये भद्रां ददृशतुस्तदा ॥१-२११-१४॥
tatra caṅkramyamāṇau tau vāsudevasutāṃ śubhām। alaṅkṛtāṃ sakhī-madhye bhadrāṃ dadṛśatus-tadā ॥1-211-14॥

(There, those two walking saw the auspicious, adorned, fortunate daughter of Vasudeva among her companions then.)

दृष्ट्वैव तामर्जुनस्य कन्दर्पः समजायत। तं तथैकाग्रमनसं कृष्णः पार्थमलक्षयत् ॥१-२११-१५॥
dṛṣṭvaiva tām arjunasya kandarpaḥ samajāyata. taṃ tathaikāgramanasaṃ kṛṣṇaḥ pārtham alakṣayat ॥1-211-15॥

(Having seen her, indeed, in Arjuna, Kāma (the god of love) arose. Him, thus with concentrated mind, Kṛṣṇa noticed Pārtha (Arjuna).)
As soon as he saw her, the god of love arose in Arjuna. Kṛṣṇa noticed Pārtha (Arjuna) thus absorbed in concentration.
अथाब्रवीत्पुष्कराक्षः प्रहसन्निव भारत। वनेचरस्य किमिदं कामेनालोड्यते मनः ॥१-२११-१६॥
athābravītpuskarākṣaḥ prahasanniva bhārata। vanecarasya kimidaṃ kāmenāloḍyate manaḥ ॥1-211-16॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पुष्कराक्षः (puṣkarākṣaḥ) - the lotus-eyed one; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; वनेचरस्य (vanecarasya) - of the forest-dweller; किम् (kim) - what; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कामेन (kāmena) - by desire; आलोड्यते (āloḍyate) - is agitated; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(Then the lotus-eyed one, as if smiling, said, O Bhārata: What is this, that the mind of the forest-dweller is agitated by desire?)
Then the lotus-eyed one, smiling as if in amusement, said, "O Bhārata, why is the mind of the forest-dweller disturbed by desire?"
ममैषा भगिनी पार्थ सारणस्य सहोदरा। यदि ते वर्तते बुद्धिर्वक्ष्यामि पितरं स्वयम् ॥१-२११-१७॥
mamaiṣā bhaginī pārtha sāraṇasya sahodarā। yadi te vartate buddhir vakṣyāmi pitaraṃ svayam ॥1-211-17॥
[मम (mama) - my; एषा (eṣā) - this (feminine); भगिनी (bhaginī) - sister; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; सारणस्य (sāraṇasya) - of Sāraṇa; सहोदरा (sahodarā) - own sister; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - to you; वर्तते (vartate) - there is (exists); बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - thought; decision; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will tell; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; स्वयम् (svayam) - myself;]
(My this sister, O Pārtha, is the own sister of Sāraṇa. If to you there is a thought, I will tell the father myself.)
O Pārtha, this is my sister, the own sister of Sāraṇa. If you have the intention, I will speak to the father myself.
अर्जुन उवाच॥
arjuna uvāca॥

दुहिता वसुदेवस्य वासुदेवस्य च स्वसा। रूपेण चैव सम्पन्ना कमिवैषा न मोहयेत् ॥१-२११-१८॥
duhitā vasudevasya vāsudevasya ca svasā। rūpeṇa caiva sampannā kamiva eṣā na mohayet॥1-211-18॥
[दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; वसुदेवस्य (vasudevasya) - of Vasudeva; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva; च (ca) - and; स्वसा (svasā) - sister; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by beauty; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सम्पन्ना (sampannā) - endowed; कम् (kam) - whom; इव (iva) - like; एषा (eṣā) - this (woman); न (na) - not; मोहयेत् (mohayet) - would delude;]
(The daughter of Vasudeva and the sister of Vāsudeva, indeed endowed with beauty, whom like would this (woman) not delude?)
She is the daughter of Vasudeva and the sister of Vāsudeva, truly endowed with beauty; who would not be captivated by her?
कृतमेव तु कल्याणं सर्वं मम भवेद्ध्रुवम्। यदि स्यान्मम वार्ष्णेयी महिषीयं स्वसा तव ॥१-२११-१९॥
kṛtameva tu kalyāṇaṃ sarvaṃ mama bhaveddhruvam। yadi syānmama vārṣṇeyī mahiṣīyaṃ svasā tava ॥1-211-19॥
[कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; accomplished; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; तु (tu) - but; however; कल्याणम् (kalyāṇam) - auspiciousness; welfare; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; मम (mama) - my; of me; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; may become; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certain; surely; यदि (yadi) - if; स्यात् (syāt) - were; would be; मम (mama) - my; of me; वार्ष्णेयी (vārṣṇeyī) - daughter of Vṛṣṇi; (epithet of Satyabhāmā); महिषी (mahiṣī) - queen; chief wife; यं (yaṃ) - whom; स्वसा (svasā) - sister; तव (tava) - your; of you;]
(Indeed, all auspiciousness would certainly be done for me, if the daughter of Vṛṣṇi, your sister, were to be my queen.)
Truly, all good fortune would be mine if your sister, the daughter of Vṛṣṇi, were to become my queen.
प्राप्तौ तु क उपायः स्यात्तद्ब्रवीहि जनार्दन। आस्थास्यामि तथा सर्वं यदि शक्यं नरेण तत् ॥१-२११-२०॥
prāptau tu ka upāyaḥ syāt tad bravīhi janārdana। āsthāsyāmi tathā sarvaṃ yadi śakyaṃ nareṇa tat ॥1-211-20॥
[प्राप्तौ (prāptau) - on attainment; on reaching; तु (tu) - but; however; क (ka) - what; which; उपायः (upāyaḥ) - means; method; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; could be; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - tell; speak; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana; आस्थास्यामि (āsthāsyāmi) - I shall undertake; I shall adopt; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; everything; यदि (yadi) - if; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; नरेण (nareṇa) - by a man; तत् (tat) - that;]
(On attainment, however, what means might there be? That, tell (me), O Janardana. I shall undertake all that thus, if that is possible by a man.)
But upon reaching (this situation), what means are there? Tell me that, O Janardana. I will undertake everything accordingly, if it is possible for a man.
वासुदेव उवाच॥

Vāsudeva said.
स्वयंवरः क्षत्रियाणां विवाहः पुरुषर्षभ। स च संशयितः पार्थ स्वभावस्यानिमित्ततः ॥१-२११-२१॥
svayaṃvaraḥ kṣatriyāṇāṃ vivāhaḥ puruṣarṣabha. sa ca saṃśayitaḥ pārtha svabhāvasyānimittataḥ ॥1-211-21॥
[स्वयंवरः (svayaṃvaraḥ) - self-choice; क्षत्रियाणां (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the kṣatriyas; विवाहः (vivāhaḥ) - marriage; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O bull among men; स (sa) - that; च (ca) - and; संशयितः (saṃśayitaḥ) - doubted; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; स्वभावस्य (svabhāvasya) - of nature; अनिमित्ततः (animittataḥ) - without cause;]
(Self-choice of the kṣatriyas, marriage, O bull among men. That also is doubted, O son of Pṛthā, due to the nature, without cause.)
O best of men, the svayaṃvara, the marriage of kṣatriyas, is also considered doubtful, O Pārtha, due to its nature and without any specific cause.
प्रसह्य हरणं चापि क्षत्रियाणां प्रशस्यते। विवाहहेतोः शूराणामिति धर्मविदो विदुः ॥१-२११-२२॥
prasahya haraṇaṃ cāpi kṣatriyāṇāṃ praśasyate। vivāhahetoḥ śūrāṇāmiti dharmavido viduḥ ॥1-211-22॥
[प्रसह्य (prasahya) - by force; हरणं (haraṇam) - abduction; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; क्षत्रियाणां (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the Kṣatriyas; प्रशस्यते (praśasyate) - is praised; विवाहहेतोः (vivāhahetoḥ) - for the purpose of marriage; शूराणाम् (śūrāṇām) - of the brave; इति (iti) - thus; धर्मविदः (dharmavidaḥ) - knowers of dharma; विदुः (viduḥ) - know;]
(By force abduction and also of the Kṣatriyas is praised; for the purpose of marriage of the brave thus knowers of dharma know.)
The abduction by force is also praised among Kṣatriyas; the knowers of dharma say that, for the purpose of marriage, this is for the brave.
स त्वमर्जुन कल्याणीं प्रसह्य भगिनीं मम। हर स्वयंवरे ह्यस्याः को वै वेद चिकीर्षितम् ॥१-२११-२३॥
sa tvam arjuna kalyāṇīṃ prasahya bhaginīṃ mama। hara svayaṃvare hy asyāḥ ko vai veda cikīrṣitam ॥1-211-23॥
[स (sa) - he; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; कल्याणीं (kalyāṇīṃ) - auspicious (one); प्रसह्य (prasahya) - by force; भगिनीं (bhaginīṃ) - sister; मम (mama) - my; हर (hara) - take; स्वयंवरे (svayaṃvare) - in the svayaṃvara (self-choice ceremony); हि (hi) - indeed; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of her; कः (kaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; वेद (veda) - knows; चिकीर्षितम् (cikīrṣitam) - what is intended;]
(He, you, Arjuna, the auspicious one, by force my sister take in the svayaṃvara indeed of her who indeed knows what is intended.)
Therefore, Arjuna, you should forcibly take my auspicious sister at the svayaṃvara; for who indeed knows what she intends.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; (name of the sage); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Vaiśampāyana said.
ततोऽर्जुनश्च कृष्णश्च विनिश्चित्येतिकृत्यताम्। शीघ्रगान्पुरुषान्राजन्प्रेषयामासतुस्तदा ॥१-२११-२४॥
tato'rjunaś ca kṛṣṇaś ca viniścitya iti kṛtyatām। śīghragān puruṣān rājan preṣayām āsatus tadā ॥1-211-24॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; च (ca) - and; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; च (ca) - and; विनिश्चित्य (viniścitya) - having ascertained; इति (iti) - thus; कृत्यताम् (kṛtyatām) - what should be done; शीघ्रगान् (śīghragān) - swift-going; पुरुषान् (puruṣān) - men; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रेषयाम् (preṣayām) - to send; आसतुः (āsatuḥ) - they made; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then Arjuna and Kṛṣṇa, having ascertained thus what should be done, at that time made swift-going men, O king, to send.)
Then, O king, Arjuna and Kṛṣṇa, after deciding what should be done, immediately dispatched swift messengers.
धर्मराजाय तत्सर्वमिन्द्रप्रस्थगताय वै। श्रुत्वैव च महाबाहुरनुजज्ञे स पाण्डवः ॥१-२११-२५॥
dharmarājāya tatsarvamindraprasthagatāya vai। śrutvaiva ca mahābāhuranujajñe sa pāṇḍavaḥ ॥1-211-25॥
[धर्मराजाय (dharmarājāya) - to Dharmarāja; (Yudhiṣṭhira) तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; इन्द्रप्रस्थगताय (indraprasthagatāya) - to the one gone to Indraprastha; वै (vai) - indeed; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; अनुजज्ञे (anujajñe) - consented; सः (saḥ) - he; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava;]
(To Dharmarāja, all that to the one gone to Indraprastha indeed, having heard indeed and the mighty-armed consented, he, the Pāṇḍava.)
All that was told to Dharmarāja, who had gone to Indraprastha; having heard it, the mighty-armed Pāṇḍava consented.
