Pancharatra: Kandavaforest set on fire protected by Arjuna and Krishna.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

तौ रथाभ्यां नरव्याघ्रौ दावस्योभयतः स्थितौ। दिक्षु सर्वासु भूतानां चक्राते कदनं महत् ॥१-२१७-१॥
tau rathābhyāṃ naravyāghrau dāvasyobhayataḥ sthitau। dikṣu sarvāsu bhūtānāṃ cakrāte kadanaṃ mahat ॥1-217-1॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; रथाभ्यां (rathābhyām) - with two chariots; नरव्याघ्रौ (naravyāghrau) - tiger among men (heroes); दावस्य (dāvasya) - of the conflagration; उभयतः (ubhayataḥ) - on both sides; स्थितौ (sthitau) - standing; दिक्षु (dikṣu) - in the directions; सर्वासु (sarvāsu) - in all; भूतानां (bhūtānām) - of beings; चक्राते (cakrāte) - made; कदनं (kadanaṃ) - slaughter; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(Those two, tigers among men, standing with their chariots on both sides of the conflagration, made great slaughter of beings in all directions.)
Those two heroes, like tigers among men, stood with their chariots on either side of the conflagration and wrought great slaughter of all beings in every direction.
यत्र यत्र हि दृश्यन्ते प्राणिनः खाण्डवालयाः। पलायन्तस्तत्र तत्र तौ वीरौ पर्यधावताम् ॥१-२१७-२॥

[यत्र (yatra) - where; यत्र (yatra) - where; हि (hi) - indeed; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; प्राणिनः (prāṇinaḥ) - living beings; खाण्डवालयाः (khāṇḍavālayāḥ) - inhabitants of Khāṇḍava; पलायन्तः (palāyantaḥ) - fleeing; तत्र (tatra) - there; तत्र (tatra) - there; तौ (tau) - those two; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; पर्यधावताम् (paryadhāvatām) - ran around;]
(Wherever indeed the living beings, inhabitants of Khāṇḍava, are seen fleeing there, there those two heroes ran around.)
Wherever the living beings of Khāṇḍava were seen fleeing, there the two heroes rushed after them.
छिद्रं हि न प्रपश्यन्ति रथयोराशुविक्रमात्। आविद्धाविव दृश्येते रथिनौ तौ रथोत्तमौ ॥१-२१७-३॥
chidraṃ hi na prapaśyanti rathayor āśuvikramāt। āviddhāv iva dṛśyete rathinau tau rathottamau ॥1-217-3॥

(A gap indeed not perceive (they) of the chariots from the swift movement. Pierced as if are seen the two charioteers, those two excellent charioteers.)
Because of the swift movement of the chariots, they do not perceive any gap; those two excellent charioteers appear as if pierced (together).
खाण्डवे दह्यमाने तु भूतान्यथ सहस्रशः। उत्पेतुर्भैरवान्नादान्विनदन्तो दिशो दश ॥१-२१७-४॥
khāṇḍave dahyamāne tu bhūtānyatha sahasraśaḥ। utpeturbhairavānnādānvinadanto diśo daśa॥1-217-4॥
[खाण्डवे (khāṇḍave) - in Khāṇḍava; (the forest named Khāṇḍava; दह्यमाने (dahyamāne) - being burned; (ablative singular of present participle of 'dah' - to burn; तु (tu) - but; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - creatures; (living beings; अथ (atha) - then; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; (in thousands; उत्पेतुः (utpetuḥ) - arose; (from 'ut' + 'pat' - to rise up; भैरवान् (bhairavān) - terrible; (fearful; नादान् (nādān) - sounds; (cries; विनदन्तः (vinadantaḥ) - uttering; (making; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; (quarters; दश (daśa) - ten;]
(In Khāṇḍava, as it was being burned, but the creatures then by thousands arose, terrible sounds uttering, making the ten directions (resound).)
But as the Khāṇḍava forest was burning, thousands of creatures arose, uttering terrible cries that echoed in all ten directions.
दग्धैकदेशा बहवो निष्टप्ताश्च तथापरे। स्फुटिताक्षा विशीर्णाश्च विप्लुताश्च विचेतसः ॥१-२१७-५॥
dagdhaikadeśā bahavo niṣṭaptāś ca tathāpare। sphuṭitākṣā viśīrṇāś ca viplutāś ca vicetasaḥ ॥1-217-5॥
[दग्ध (dagdha) - burnt; एक (eka) - one; देशा (deśā) - part(s); बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; निष्टप्ताः (niṣṭaptāḥ) - completely scorched; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अपरे (apare) - others; स्फुटित (sphuṭita) - burst; अक्षाः (akṣāḥ) - eyes; विशीर्णाः (viśīrṇāḥ) - shattered; च (ca) - and; विप्लुताः (viplutāḥ) - dissolved; च (ca) - and; विचेतसः (vicetasaḥ) - unconscious;]
(Burnt in one part, many (were) completely scorched and likewise others; with burst eyes, shattered, dissolved, and unconscious.)

समालिङ्ग्य सुतानन्ये पितृन्मातृंस्तथापरे। त्यक्तुं न शेकुः स्नेहेन तथैव निधनं गताः ॥१-२१७-६॥
samāliṅgya sutānanye pitṝnmātṝṃstathāpare। tyaktuṃ na śekuḥ snehena tathaiva nidhanaṃ gatāḥ ॥1-217-6॥

(Having embraced their sons, some (did so); others (embraced) fathers and mothers likewise; others, because of affection, were not able to abandon (them), and thus went to death.)

विकृतैर्दर्शनैरन्ये समुत्पेतुः सहस्रशः। तत्र तत्र विघूर्णन्तः पुनरग्नौ प्रपेदिरे ॥१-२१७-७॥

(By deformed appearances, others arose together by thousands; there, there, whirling, again into the fire they entered.)

दग्धपक्षाक्षिचरणा विचेष्टन्तो महीतले। तत्र तत्र स्म दृश्यन्ते विनश्यन्तः शरीरिणः ॥१-२१७-८॥
dagdhapakṣākṣicaraṇā viceṣṭanto mahītale। tatra tatra sma dṛśyante vinaśyantaḥ śarīriṇaḥ॥1-217-8॥
[दग्ध (dagdha) - burnt; पक्ष (pakṣa) - wing; अक्षि (akṣi) - eye; चरणा (caraṇā) - feet; विचेष्टन्तः (viceṣṭantaḥ) - moving about; महीतले (mahītale) - on the ground; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there; स्म (sma) - indeed; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; विनश्यन्तः (vinaśyantaḥ) - perishing; शरीरिणः (śarīriṇaḥ) - creatures;]
(Burnt of wings, eyes, and feet, moving about on the ground, here and there indeed are seen perishing creatures.)

जलस्थानेषु सर्वेषु क्वाथ्यमानेषु भारत। गतसत्त्वाः स्म दृश्यन्ते कूर्ममत्स्याः सहस्रशः ॥१-२१७-९॥
jalasthāneṣu sarveṣu kvāthyamāneṣu bhārata। gatasattvāḥ sma dṛśyante kūrmamatsyāḥ sahasraśaḥ ॥1-217-9॥
[जलस्थानेषु (jalasthāneṣu) - in water-places; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; क्वाथ्यमानेषु (kvāthyamāneṣu) - being boiled; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; गतसत्त्वाः (gatasattvāḥ) - devoid of life; स्म (sma) - indeed; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; कूर्ममत्स्याः (kūrmamatsyāḥ) - turtles and fishes; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by the thousands;]
(In all water-places, as they were being boiled, O Bhārata, lifeless turtles and fishes by the thousands were indeed seen.)
O Bhārata, in all water bodies, as they were being boiled, thousands of lifeless turtles and fishes were seen.
शरीरैः सम्प्रदीप्तैश्च देहवन्त इवाग्नयः। अदृश्यन्त वने तस्मिन्प्राणिनः प्राणसङ्क्षये ॥१-२१७-१०॥
śarīraiḥ sampradīptaiś ca dehavanta iva agnayaḥ। adṛśyanta vane tasmin prāṇinaḥ prāṇasaṅkṣaye ॥1-217-10॥
[शरीरैः (śarīraiḥ) - by bodies; सम्प्रदीप्तैः (sampradīptaiḥ) - completely blazing; च (ca) - and; देहवन्त (dehavanta) - having bodies; इव (iva) - like; अग्नयः (agnayaḥ) - fires; अदृश्यन्त (adṛśyanta) - were seen; वने (vane) - in the forest; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; प्राणिनः (prāṇinaḥ) - living beings; प्राणसङ्क्षये (prāṇasaṅkṣaye) - at the end of life;]
(By bodies completely blazing and having bodies like fires, living beings were seen in that forest at the end of life.)
In that forest, living beings, their bodies blazing like fire, appeared as if at the end of their lives.
तांस्तथोत्पततः पार्थः शरैः सञ्छिद्य खण्डशः। दीप्यमाने ततः प्रास्यत्प्रहसन्कृष्णवर्त्मनि ॥१-२१७-११॥
tāṃs tathotpatataḥ pārthaḥ śaraiḥ sañchidya khaṇḍaśaḥ। dīpyamāne tataḥ prāsyat prahasan kṛṣṇavartmani ॥1-217-11॥
[तांस् (tāṃs) - them; तथोत्पततः (tathotpatataḥ) - thus rising; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; सञ्छिद्य (sañchidya) - having cut asunder; खण्डशः (khaṇḍaśaḥ) - into pieces; दीप्यमाने (dīpyamāne) - blazing; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रास्यत् (prāsyat) - hurled; प्रहसन् (prahāsan) - smiling; कृष्णवर्त्मनि (kṛṣṇavartmani) - on the path of Kṛṣṇa;]
(Pārtha, having thus cut them, who were rising, with arrows into pieces, then hurled the blazing (weapon), smiling, on the path of Kṛṣṇa.)
Arjuna (Pārtha), seeing them rise, cut them into pieces with his arrows, and then, smiling, hurled the blazing weapon onto the path of Kṛṣṇa.
ते शराचितसर्वाङ्गा विनदन्तो महारवान्। ऊर्ध्वमुत्पत्य वेगेन निपेतुः पावके पुनः ॥१-२१७-१२॥
te śarācitasarvāṅgā vinadanto mahāravān। ūrdhvamutpatya vegena nipetuḥ pāvake punaḥ ॥1-217-12॥
[ते (te) - they; शर (śara) - arrow; आचित (ācita) - covered; सर्वाङ्गा (sarvāṅgā) - all-limbed; विनदन्तः (vinadantaḥ) - roaring; महारवान् (mahāravān) - with great sound; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upwards; उत्पत्य (utpatya) - having sprung; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; निपेतुः (nipetuḥ) - fell; पावके (pāvake) - into fire; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(They, all-limbed and covered with arrows, roaring with great sound, having sprung upwards with speed, fell again into the fire.)
They, their entire bodies covered with arrows, let out great roars, leapt up swiftly, and again fell into the fire.
शरैरभ्याहतानां च दह्यतां च वनौकसाम्। विरावः श्रूयते ह स्म समुद्रस्येव मथ्यतः ॥१-२१७-१३॥
śarair abhyāhatānāṃ ca dahyatāṃ ca vanaukasām। virāvaḥ śrūyate ha sma samudrasyeva mathyataḥ ॥1-217-13॥
[शरैः (śaraiḥ) - by arrows; अभ्याहतानाम् (abhyāhatānām) - of those who are struck; च (ca) - and; दह्यताम् (dahyatām) - of those who are being burned; च (ca) - and; वनौकसाम् (vanaukasām) - of the forest-dwellers; विरावः (virāvaḥ) - cries; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; ह (ha) - indeed; स्म (sma) - formerly; समुद्रस्य (samudrasya) - of the ocean; इव (iva) - like; मथ्यतः (mathyataḥ) - when being churned;]
(The cries of the forest-dwellers, of those struck by arrows and of those being burned, are indeed heard, like (the sound) of the ocean when being churned.)
The cries of the forest-dwellers, struck by arrows and burning, were heard, like the sound of the ocean being churned.
वह्नेश्चापि प्रहृष्टस्य खमुत्पेतुर्महार्चिषः। जनयामासुरुद्वेगं सुमहान्तं दिवौकसाम् ॥१-२१७-१४॥
vahneścāpi prahṛṣṭasya khamutpeturmahārciṣaḥ। janayāmāsarudvegaṃ sumahāntaṃ divaukasām ॥1-217-14॥
[वह्नेः (vahneḥ) - of Agni; (the fire god); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्रहृष्टस्य (prahṛṣṭasya) - of the delighted; खम् (kham) - the sky; उत्पेतुः (utpetuḥ) - arose; महार्चिषः (mahārciṣaḥ) - great flames; जनयामासुः (janayāmāsuḥ) - caused to arise; उद्वेगम् (udvegam) - disturbance; सुमहान्तम् (sumahāntam) - very great; दिवौकसाम् (divaukasām) - of the dwellers of heaven;]
(Of Agni, and also of the delighted, great flames arose in the sky; they caused a very great disturbance for the dwellers of heaven.)
From the delighted Agni, great flames arose into the sky, causing immense disturbance among the dwellers of heaven.
ततो जग्मुर्महात्मानः सर्व एव दिवौकसः। शरणं देवराजानं सहस्राक्षं पुरंदरम् ॥१-२१७-१५॥
tato jagmurmahātmānaḥ sarva eva divaukasaḥ। śaraṇaṃ devarājānaṃ sahasrākṣaṃ puraṃdaram ॥1-217-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; सर्वे (sarve) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the dwellers of heaven; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; देवराजानम् (devarājānam) - the king of the gods; सहस्राक्षम् (sahasrākṣam) - the thousand-eyed one; पुरंदरम् (puraṃdaram) - Purandara;]
(Then the great-souled ones, all indeed the dwellers of heaven, went to the refuge, the king of the gods, the thousand-eyed one, Purandara.)
Then all the great-souled dwellers of heaven went to take refuge with the king of the gods, the thousand-eyed Purandara (Indra).
देवा ऊचुः॥

The gods said.
किं न्विमे मानवाः सर्वे दह्यन्ते कृष्णवर्त्मना। कच्चिन्न सङ्क्षयः प्राप्तो लोकानाममरेश्वर ॥१-२१७-१६॥
kiṁ nvime mānavāḥ sarve dahyante kṛṣṇavartmanā। kaccinna saṅkṣayaḥ prāpto lokānām amareśvara ॥1-217-16॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; इमे (ime) - these; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - humans; सर्वे (sarve) - all; दह्यन्ते (dahyante) - are being burned; कृष्णवर्त्मना (kṛṣṇavartmanā) - by the dark path; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; न (na) - not; सङ्क्षयः (saṅkṣayaḥ) - destruction; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has come; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; अमरेश्वर (amareśvara) - O lord of immortals;]
(What indeed, are all these humans being burned by the dark path? Has not destruction come to the worlds, O lord of immortals?)
O lord of immortals, are all these humans truly being consumed by the dark path? Has destruction not come upon the worlds?
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

तच्छ्रुत्वा वृत्रहा तेभ्यः स्वयमेवान्ववेक्ष्य च। खाण्डवस्य विमोक्षार्थं प्रययौ हरिवाहनः ॥१-२१७-१७॥
tacchrutvā vṛtrahā tebhyaḥ svayamevānvavekṣya ca। khāṇḍavasya vimokṣārthaṃ prayayau harivāhanaḥ ॥1-217-17॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वृत्रहा (vṛtrahā) - Vṛtra-slayer; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - from them; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्ववेक्ष्य (anvavekṣya) - having observed; च (ca) - and; खाण्डवस्य (khāṇḍavasya) - of Khāṇḍava; विमोक्षार्थम् (vimokṣārtham) - for the purpose of release; प्रययौ (prayayau) - he went; हरिवाहनः (harivāhanaḥ) - Hari's vehicle (Arjuna);]
(That having heard, the Vṛtra-slayer, from them, himself indeed having observed and, for the purpose of release of Khāṇḍava, went, Hari's vehicle (Arjuna).)
Having heard that, the Vṛtra-slayer, after personally observing them, went for the release of Khāṇḍava, being Hari's vehicle (Arjuna).
महताऽ मेघजालेन नानारूपेण वज्रभृत्। आकाशं समवस्तीर्य प्रववर्ष सुरेश्वरः ॥१-२१७-१८॥
mahatā meghajālena nānārūpeṇa vajrabhṛt। ākāśaṃ samavastīrya pravavarṣa sureśvaraḥ ॥1-217-18॥
[महताऽ (mahatā) - by the great; मेघजालेन (meghajālena) - by a network of clouds; नानारूपेण (nānārūpeṇa) - of various forms; वज्रभृत् (vajrabhṛt) - the wielder of the thunderbolt; आकाशं (ākāśam) - the sky; समवस्तीर्य (samavastīrya) - having completely covered; प्रववर्ष (pravavarṣa) - rained forth; सुरेश्वरः (sureśvaraḥ) - the lord of the gods;]
(By the great network of clouds of various forms, the wielder of the thunderbolt, having completely covered the sky, rained forth, the lord of the gods.)
Indra, the lord of the gods and wielder of the thunderbolt, covered the sky with a vast and varied network of clouds and began to rain.
ततोऽक्षमात्रा विसृजन्धाराः शतसहस्रशः। अभ्यवर्षत्सहस्राक्षः पावकं खाण्डवं प्रति ॥१-२१७-१९॥
tato'kṣamātrā visṛjandhārāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ। abhyavarṣatsahasrākṣaḥ pāvakaṃ khāṇḍavaṃ prati॥1-217-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अक्ष-मात्रा (akṣa-mātrā) - of dice-size; विसृजन् (visṛjan) - releasing; धाराः (dhārāḥ) - streams; शत-सहस्रशः (śata-sahasraśaḥ) - by hundreds of thousands; अभ्यवर्षत् (abhyavarṣat) - poured down; सहस्राक्षः (sahasrākṣaḥ) - the thousand-eyed (Indra); पावकम् (pāvakam) - fire; खाण्डवम् (khāṇḍavam) - Khandava (forest); प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Then, releasing streams of dice-size by hundreds of thousands, the thousand-eyed (Indra) poured down (rain) towards the fire at Khandava.)
Then Indra, the thousand-eyed, released streams of rain, each the size of dice, by the hundreds of thousands, pouring them down upon the fire at Khandava.
असम्प्राप्तास्तु ता धारास्तेजसा जातवेदसः। ख एव समशुष्यन्त न काश्चित्पावकं गताः ॥१-२१७-२०॥
asamprāptās tu tā dhārās tejasā jātavedasaḥ। kha eva samaśuṣyanta na kāścit pāvakaṃ gatāḥ॥1-217-20॥
[असम्प्राप्ताः (asamprāptāḥ) - not having reached; तु (tu) - but; ता (tā) - those; धाराः (dhārāḥ) - streams; तेजसा (tejasā) - by the brilliance; जातवेदसः (jātavedasaḥ) - of Jātavedas (Agni, fire); ख (kha) - sky; एव (eva) - indeed; समशुष्यन्त (samaśuṣyanta) - were completely dried up; न (na) - not; काश्चित् (kāścit) - any; पावकं (pāvakaṃ) - to the fire; गताः (gatāḥ) - reached;]
(But those streams, not having reached, by the brilliance of Jātavedas, indeed in the sky were completely dried up; not any reached the fire.)
But those streams, before reaching, were completely dried up in the sky by the brilliance of Jātavedas (the fire); none of them reached the fire.
ततो नमुचिहा क्रुद्धो भृशमर्चिष्मतस्तदा। पुनरेवाभ्यवर्षत्तमम्भः प्रविसृजन्बहु ॥१-२१७-२१॥
tato namucihā kruddho bhṛśamarciṣmatastadā। punarevābhyavarṣattamambhaḥ pravisṛjanbahu ॥1-217-21॥

(Then Namuci, angry, intensely fiery at that time, again indeed poured down much water upon him, releasing (it).)
Then Namuci, enraged and blazing intensely, once again released a great quantity of water upon him.
अर्चिर्धाराभिसम्बद्धं धूमविद्युत्समाकुलम्। बभूव तद्वनं घोरं स्तनयित्नुसघोषवत् ॥१-२१७-२२॥
arcir-dhārābhi-sambaddhaṃ dhūma-vidyut-samākulam। babhūva tad vanaṃ ghoraṃ stanayitnu-saghoṣavat॥1-217-22॥

(Connected with streams of flame, filled with smoke and lightning, that forest became terrible, resounding with thunder.)
That forest became dreadful, joined by streams of flame, filled with smoke and lightning, and resounding with the noise of thunder.
