तक्षकस्तु न तत्रासीत्सर्पराजो महाबलः। दह्यमाने वने तस्मिन्कुरुक्षेत्रेऽभवत्तदा ॥१-२१८-४॥

तद्विघातार्थमसृजदर्जुनोऽप्यस्त्रमुत्तमम्। वायव्यमेवाभिमन्त्र्य प्रतिपत्तिविशारदः ॥१-२१८-१५॥
tad-vighātārtham asṛjad arjuno'py astram uttamam। vāyavyam eva abhimantrya pratipatti-viśāradaḥ॥1-218-15॥

तेनेन्द्राशनिमेघानां वीर्यौजस्तद्विनाशितम्। जलधाराश्च ताः शोषं जग्मुर्नेशुश्च विद्युतः ॥१-२१८-१६॥
tenendrāśanimeghānāṃ vīryaujastadvināśitam। jaladhārāśca tāḥ śoṣaṃ jagmurneśuśca vidyutaḥ ॥1-218-16॥

असकृद्भग्नसङ्कल्पाः सुराश्च बहुशः कृताः। भयाद्रणं परित्यज्य शक्रमेवाभिशिश्रियुः ॥१-२१८-४१॥

दृष्ट्वा निवारितान्देवान्माधवेनार्जुनेन च। आश्चर्यमगमंस्तत्र मुनयो दिवि विष्ठिताः ॥१-२१८-४२॥

When the sages situated in heaven saw the gods being driven away by Mādhava and Arjuna, they were filled with wonder.
शक्रश्चापि तयोर्वीर्यमुपलभ्यासकृद्रणे। बभूव परमप्रीतो भूयश्चैतावयोधयत् ॥१-२१८-४३॥
śakraś cāpi tayor vīryam upalabhy āsakṛd raṇe। babhūva paramaprīto bhūyaś caitāv ayodhayat॥ 1-218-43॥

ततोऽश्मवर्षं सुमहद्व्यसृजत्पाकशासनः। भूय एव तदा वीर्यं जिज्ञासुः सव्यसाचिनः ॥ तच्छरैरर्जुनो वर्षं प्रतिजघ्नेऽत्यमर्षणः ॥१-२१८-४४॥
tato'śmavarṣaṃ sumahad vyasṛjat pākāśāsanaḥ। bhūya eva tadā vīryaṃ jijñāsuḥ savyasācinaḥ॥ taccharair arjuno varṣaṃ pratijaghne 'tyamarṣaṇaḥ॥1-218-44॥

(Then Indra sent forth a very great rain of stones. Again, at that time, desiring to know the strength of Arjuna. That rain Arjuna, with arrows, repelled, being very unyielding.)
Then Indra unleashed a tremendous shower of stones. Once more, wishing to test Arjuna's strength, he did so. Arjuna, unyielding, repelled that rain with his arrows.
विफलं क्रियमाणं तत्सम्प्रेक्ष्य च शतक्रतुः। भूयः संवर्धयामास तद्वर्षं देवराडथ ॥१-२१८-४५॥
viphalaṃ kriyamāṇaṃ tatsamprekṣya ca śatakratuḥ। bhūyaḥ saṃvardhayāmāsa tadvarṣaṃ devarāḍatha ॥1-218-45॥

Seeing that the effort was fruitless, Indra, the king of the gods, again caused that rain to grow.
सोऽश्मवर्षं महावेगैरिषुभिः पाकशासनिः। विलयं गमयामास हर्षयन्पितरं तदा ॥१-२१८-४६॥
so'śmavarṣaṃ mahāvegairiṣubhiḥ pākaśāsaniḥ। vilayaṃ gamayāmāsa harṣayanpitaraṃ tadā ॥1-218-46॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अश्मवर्षम् (aśmavarṣam) - stone-rain; महावेगैः (mahāvegaiḥ) - with great speed; इषुभिः (iṣubhiḥ) - with arrows; पाकशासनिः (pākaśāsaniḥ) - the wielder of the thunderbolt; विलयम् (vilayam) - destruction; गमयामास (gamayāmāsa) - caused to go; हर्षयन् (harṣayan) - delighting; पितरम् (pitaram) - his father; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(He, the wielder of the thunderbolt, with arrows of great speed, caused the stone-rain to go to destruction, delighting his father then.)
At that time, the wielder of the thunderbolt (Indra), using arrows of great speed, destroyed the stone-rain, bringing joy to his father.
समुत्पाट्य तु पाणिभ्यां मन्दराच्छिखरं महत्। सद्रुमं व्यसृजच्छक्रो जिघांसुः पाण्डुनन्दनम् ॥१-२१८-४७॥
samutpāṭya tu pāṇibhyāṃ mandarācchikharaṃ mahat| sadrumaṃ vyasṛjacchakro jighāṃsuḥ pāṇḍunandanam ॥1-218-47॥

tato'rjuno vegavadbhir jvalitāgrair ajihmagaiḥ। bāṇair vidhvaṃsayāmāsa gireḥ śṛṅgaṃ sahasradhā ॥1-218-48॥

(Then Arjuna, with swift, blazing-tipped, straight-flying arrows, shattered the mountain's peak into a thousand pieces.)

गिरेर्विशीर्यमाणस्य तस्य रूपं तदा बभौ। सार्कचन्द्रग्रहस्येव नभसः प्रविशीर्यतः ॥१-२१८-४९॥

The appearance of the mountain, as it was being shattered, shone at that moment, just like the sun, moon, and planets scattered across the sky.
तेनावाक्पतता दावे शैलेन महता भृशम्। भूय एव हतास्तत्र प्राणिनः खाण्डवालयाः ॥१-२१८-५०॥
tenāvākpatatā dāve śailena mahatā bhṛśam। bhūya eva hatās tatra prāṇinaḥ khāṇḍavālayāḥ ॥1-218-50॥
