Pancharatra: Struggle of Jarita and her four offspring.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततः प्रज्वलिते शुक्रे शार्ङ्गकास्ते सुदुःखिताः। व्यथिताः परमोद्विग्ना नाधिजग्मुः परायणम् ॥१-२२१-१॥
tataḥ prajvalite śukre śārṅgakās te suduḥkhitāḥ। vyathitāḥ paramodvignā nādhijagmuḥ parāyaṇam ॥1-221-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रज्वलिते (prajvalite) - having been ignited; शुक्रे (śukre) - Śukra (Venus); शार्ङ्गकाः (śārṅgakāḥ) - the Śārṅgakas; ते (te) - they; सुदुःखिताः (suduḥkhitāḥ) - very afflicted; व्यथिताः (vyathitāḥ) - distressed; परम (parama) - exceedingly; उद्विग्नाः (udvignāḥ) - agitated; न (na) - not; अधिजग्मुः (adhijagmuḥ) - attained; परायणम् (parāyaṇam) - refuge;]
(Then, when Śukra was ignited, those Śārṅgakas, very afflicted, distressed, exceedingly agitated, did not attain refuge.)
Then, when Śukra was ignited, the Śārṅgakas, greatly afflicted and deeply distressed, could not find any refuge. (1-221-1)
निशाम्य पुत्रकान्बालान्माता तेषां तपस्विनी। जरिता दुःखसन्तप्ता विललाप नरेश्वर ॥१-२२१-२॥

(Having heard her sons, the children, their mother, the ascetic woman Jarita, afflicted with sorrow, lamented, O king.)
O king, upon hearing her sons, the ascetic mother Jarita, overwhelmed with sorrow, began to lament. (1-221-2)
अयमग्निर्दहन्कक्षमित आयाति भीषणः। जगत्संदीपयन्भीमो मम दुःखविवर्धनः ॥१-२२१-३॥
ayam agnir dahan kakṣam ita āyāti bhīṣaṇaḥ। jagat sandīpayan bhīmaḥ mama duḥkha-vivardhanaḥ ॥1-221-3॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; दहन् (dahan) - burning; कक्षमित (kakṣam ita) - having reached the forest; आयाति (āyāti) - comes; भीषणः (bhīṣaṇaḥ) - terrible; जगत् (jagat) - world; संदीपयन् (sandīpayan) - inflaming; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - fearsome; मम (mama) - my; दुःखविवर्धनः (duḥkha-vivardhanaḥ) - increaser of sorrow;]
(This fire, burning, having reached the forest, comes, terrible; inflaming the world, fearsome, my increaser of sorrow.)
This terrible fire, having reached the forest, comes burning; it inflames the world, and fearsomely increases my sorrow. (1-221-3)
इमे च मां कर्षयन्ति शिशवो मन्दचेतसः। अबर्हाश्चरणैर्हीनाः पूर्वेषां नः परायणम् ॥ त्रासयंश्चायमायाति लेलिहानो महीरुहान् ॥१-२२१-४॥
ime ca māṃ karṣayanti śiśavo mandacētasaḥ। abarhāścaraṇairhīnāḥ pūrveṣāṃ naḥ parāyaṇam ॥ trāsayaṃścāyamāyāti lelihāno mahīruhān ॥1-221-4॥
[इमे (ime) - these; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; कर्षयन्ति (karṣayanti) - drag; शिशवः (śiśavaḥ) - children; मन्दचेतसः (mandacētasaḥ) - dull-minded; अबर्हाः (abarhāḥ) - unworthy; चरणैः (caraṇaiḥ) - with feet; हीनाः (hīnāḥ) - deprived; पूर्वेषाम् (pūrveṣām) - of the former; नः (naḥ) - our; परायणम् (parāyaṇam) - refuge; त्रासयन् (trāsayan) - frightening; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this; आयाति (āyāti) - comes; लेलिहानः (lelihānaḥ) - licking; महीरुहान् (mahīruhān) - trees;]
(These and me drag children dull-minded; unworthy with feet deprived of the former our refuge; frightening and this comes licking trees.)
These dull-minded children drag me; unworthy, deprived of the feet, the refuge of our ancestors; and this one comes frightening, licking the trees. (1-221-4)
अशक्तिमत्त्वाच्च सुता न शक्ताः सरणे मम। आदाय च न शक्तास्मि पुत्रान्सरितुमन्यतः ॥१-२२१-५॥
aśaktimattvācca sutā na śaktāḥ saraṇe mama। ādāya ca na śaktāsmi putrānsaritumanyataḥ ॥1-221-5॥
[अशक्तिमत्त्वात् (aśaktimattvāt) - from incapacity; च (ca) - and; सुता (sutāḥ) - sons; न (na) - not; शक्ताः (śaktāḥ) - able; सरणे (saraṇe) - to move; मम (mama) - my; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; शक्तास्मि (śaktāsmi) - am able; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; सरितुम् (saritum) - to move; अन्यतः (anyataḥ) - from elsewhere;]
(From incapacity and (my) sons are not able to move; having taken (them) and I am not able to move my sons from elsewhere.)
Because of incapacity, my sons are not able to move; nor am I able to take my sons and move them elsewhere. (1-221-5)
न च त्यक्तुमहं शक्ता हृदयं दूयतीव मे। कं नु जह्यामहं पुत्रं कमादाय व्रजाम्यहम् ॥१-२२१-६॥
na ca tyaktumahaṃ śaktā hṛdayaṃ dūyatīva me। kaṃ nu jahyāmahaṃ putraṃ kamādāya vrajāmyaham ॥1-221-6॥

(And I am not able to abandon; my heart is as if pained. Whom indeed should I abandon, my son? Whom taking shall I go? I.)
And I am not able to abandon; my heart feels as if it is pained. Whom indeed should I abandon, my son? Whom should I take and go? (1-221-6)
किं नु मे स्यात्कृतं कृत्वा मन्यध्वं पुत्रकाः कथम्। चिन्तयाना विमोक्षं वो नाधिगच्छामि किञ्चन ॥ छादयित्वा च वो गात्रैः करिष्ये मरणं सह ॥१-२२१-७॥
kiṁ nu me syāt kṛtaṁ kṛtvā manyadhvaṁ putrakāḥ katham। cintayānā vimokṣaṁ vo nādhigacchāmi kiñcana ॥ chādayitvā ca vo gātraiḥ kariṣye maraṇaṁ saha ॥1-221-7॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; मन्यध्वं (manyadhvam) - you (all) think; पुत्रकाः (putrakāḥ) - O sons; कथम् (katham) - how; चिन्तयाना (cintayānā) - while thinking; विमोक्षं (vimokṣam) - liberation; वः (vaḥ) - for you; न (na) - not; अधिगच्छामि (adhigacchāmi) - I attain; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; छादयित्वा (chādayitvā) - having covered; च (ca) - and; वः (vaḥ) - you; गात्रैः (gātraiḥ) - with (my) limbs; करिष्ये (kariṣye) - I shall do; मरणं (maraṇaṁ) - death; सह (saha) - together;]
(What indeed would be done for me, having done (so), you think, O sons, how? While thinking, I do not attain any liberation for you. Having covered you with (my) limbs, I shall do death together.)
What could I possibly do for you, my sons? How do you think I can help? While I ponder, I find no way to bring you liberation. Therefore, covering you with my own body, I will die together with you. (1-221-7)
जरितारौ कुलं हीदं ज्येष्ठत्वेन प्रतिष्ठितम्। सारिसृक्वः प्रजायेत पितृणां कुलवर्धनः ॥१-२२१-८॥
jaritārau kulaṃ hīdaṃ jyeṣṭhatvena pratiṣṭhitam। sārisṛkvaḥ prajāyeta pitṝṇāṃ kulavardhanaḥ ॥1-221-8॥
[जरितारौ (jaritārau) - two householders; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; हि (hi) - indeed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; ज्येष्ठत्वेन (jyeṣṭhatvena) - by seniority; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - established; सारिसृक्वः (sārisṛkvaḥ) - one who continues the lineage; प्रजायेत (prajāyeta) - should be born; पितृणां (pitṝṇāṃ) - of the ancestors; कुलवर्धनः (kulavardhanaḥ) - one who increases the family;]
(Two householders—this family indeed is established by seniority. One who continues the lineage, increasing the family of the ancestors, should be born.)

स्तम्बमित्रस्तपः कुर्याद्द्रोणो ब्रह्मविदुत्तमः। इत्येवमुक्त्वा प्रययौ पिता वो निर्घृणः पुरा ॥१-२२१-९॥
stambamitras tapaḥ kuryād droṇo brahmavid uttamaḥ। ityevam uktvā prayayau pitā vo nirghṛṇaḥ purā ॥1-221-9॥

(Stambamitra should perform austerity; Droṇa, the highest knower of Brahman. Thus having said in this way, your father, pitiless, departed formerly.)

कमुपादाय शक्येत गन्तुं कस्यापदुत्तमा। किं नु कृत्वा कृतं कार्यं भवेदिति च विह्वला ॥१-२२१-१०॥
kamupādāya śakyeta gantuṃ kasyāpaduttamā। kiṃ nu kṛtvā kṛtaṃ kāryaṃ bhavediti ca vihvalā ॥1-221-10॥

(What, having taken, might it be possible to go to the highest misfortune of whom? What indeed, having done, would the duty be accomplished—thus, and distressed.)
She, distressed, wondered: "What could I take up to reach the greatest misfortune of someone? What, indeed, if done, would fulfill my duty?" (1-221-10)
नापश्यत्स्वधिया मोक्षं स्वसुतानां तदानलात्। एवं ब्रुवन्तीं शार्ङ्गास्ते प्रत्यूचुरथ मातरम् ॥१-२२१-११॥
nāpaśyatsvadhiyā mokṣaṃ svasutānāṃ tadānalāt। evaṃ bruvantīṃ śārṅgāste pratyūcuratha mātaram ॥1-221-11॥
[न (na) - not; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; स्वधिया (svadhiyā) - by own understanding; मोक्षं (mokṣam) - liberation; स्वसुतानां (svasutānām) - of her own sons; तदा (tadā) - then; अनलात् (analāt) - from fire; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ब्रुवन्तीं (bruvantīm) - speaking; शार्ङ्गाः (śārṅgāḥ) - the Śārṅgas; ते (te) - they; प्रत्यूचुः (pratyūcuḥ) - replied; अथ (atha) - then; मातरम् (mātaram) - to the mother;]
(She did not see, by her own understanding, liberation of her own sons from the fire then. Thus, as she was speaking, the Śārṅgas then replied to the mother.)
She could not perceive, by her own wisdom, the liberation of her sons from the fire at that time. Thus, as she was speaking, the Śārṅgas replied to their mother. (1-221-11)
स्नेहमुत्सृज्य मातस्त्वं पत यत्र न हव्यवाट्। अस्मासु हि विनष्टेषु भवितारः सुतास्तव ॥ त्वयि मातर्विनष्टायां न नः स्यात्कुलसन्ततिः ॥१-२२१-१२॥
sneham utsṛjya mātas tvaṃ pata yatra na havyavāṭ। asmāsu hi vinaṣṭeṣu bhavitāraḥ sutās tava ॥ tvayi mātar vinaṣṭāyāṃ na naḥ syāt kulasantatiḥ ॥1-221-12॥
[स्नेहम् (sneham) - affection; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; मातः (mātaḥ) - O mother; त्वम् (tvam) - you; पत (pata) - fall; यत्र (yatra) - where; न (na) - not; हव्यवाट् (havyavāṭ) - the fire (Agni); अस्मासु (asmāsu) - in us; हि (hi) - indeed; विनष्टेषु (vinaṣṭeṣu) - when destroyed; भवितारः (bhavitāraḥ) - future; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons; तव (tava) - your; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; मातर् (mātar) - O mother; विनष्टायाम् (vinaṣṭāyām) - when destroyed; न (na) - not; नः (naḥ) - our; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; कुलसन्ततिः (kulasantatiḥ) - family lineage;]
(Having abandoned affection, O mother, you fall where there is no fire (Agni). Indeed, when we are destroyed, your sons will be the future. When you, O mother, are destroyed, there would not be our family lineage.)
O mother, abandoning affection, you fall where there is no sacred fire. Indeed, if we are destroyed, your sons would be the future. But if you, mother, are destroyed, our family lineage would not continue. (1-221-12)
अन्ववेक्ष्यैतदुभयं क्षमं स्याद्यत्कुलस्य नः। तद्वै कर्तुं परः कालो मातरेष भवेत्तव ॥१-२२१-१३॥
anvavekṣyaitadubhayaṃ kṣamaṃ syādyatkulāsya naḥ। tadvai kartuṃ paraḥ kālo mātareṣa bhavettava ॥1-221-13॥
[अन्ववेक्ष्य (anvavekṣya) - having examined; एतद् (etad) - this; उभयं (ubhayaṃ) - both; क्षमं (kṣamam) - proper; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; यत् (yat) - which; कुलस्य (kulasya) - of the family; नः (naḥ) - our; तत् (tat) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; परः (paraḥ) - future; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; मातरेष (mātareṣa) - O mother; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; तव (tava) - for you;]
(Having examined both of these, what is proper should be which is for our family. That indeed, O mother, the future time should be for you to do.)
O mother, having examined both of these, whatever is proper for our family, that indeed should be done by you at the appropriate time. (1-221-13)
मा वै कुलविनाशाय स्नेहं कार्षीः सुतेषु नः। न हीदं कर्म मोघं स्याल्लोककामस्य नः पितुः ॥१-२२१-१४॥
mā vai kulavināśāya snehaṃ kārṣīḥ suteṣu naḥ। na hīdaṃ karma moghaṃ syāllokakāmasya naḥ pituḥ ॥1-221-14॥
[मा (mā) - do not; वै (vai) - indeed; कुलविनाशाय (kulavināśāya) - for the destruction of the family; स्नेहं (sneham) - affection; कार्षीः (kārṣīḥ) - you should do; सुतेषु (suteṣu) - towards the sons; नः (naḥ) - our; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कर्म (karma) - action; मोघं (mogham) - futile; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; लोककामस्य (lokakāmasya) - of the one desiring worldly enjoyment; नः (naḥ) - our; पितुः (pituḥ) - father;]
(Do not, indeed, for the destruction of the family, show affection towards our sons; for this action should not be futile for our father who desires worldly enjoyment.)
Do not, indeed, out of affection for our sons, act in a way that would destroy the family; for this action should not be in vain for our father who desires worldly prosperity. (1-221-14)

इदमाखोर्बिलं भूमौ वृक्षस्यास्य समीपतः। तदाविशध्वं त्वरिता वह्नेरत्र न वो भयम् ॥१-२२१-१५॥
idam ākhor bilaṃ bhūmau vṛkṣasyāsya samīpataḥ। tad āviśadhvaṃ tvaritā vahnēr atra na vo bhayam ॥1-221-15॥
[इदम् (idam) - this; आखोः (ākhoḥ) - of the mongoose; बिलम् (bilam) - burrow; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; वृक्षस्य (vṛkṣasya) - of the tree; अस्य (asya) - of this; समीपतः (samīpataḥ) - near; तत् (tat) - that; आविशध्वम् (āviśadhvam) - enter; त्वरिताः (tvaritāḥ) - quickly; वह्नेः (vahneḥ) - of fire; अत्र (atra) - here; न (na) - not; वः (vaḥ) - to you; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]
(This is the burrow of the mongoose on the ground near this tree. Enter that quickly; here, from the fire, there is no fear for you.)

ततोऽहं पांसुना छिद्रमपिधास्यामि पुत्रकाः। एवं प्रतिकृतं मन्ये ज्वलतः कृष्णवर्त्मनः ॥१-२२१-१६॥
tato'haṃ pāṃsunā chidrama-pidhāsyāmi putrakāḥ। evaṃ pratikṛtaṃ manye jvalataḥ kṛṣṇavartmanaḥ ॥1-221-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; पांसुना (pāṃsunā) - with dust; छिद्रम् (chidram) - hole; अपिधास्यामि (apidhāsyāmi) - will cover; पुत्रकाः (putrakāḥ) - O sons; एवम् (evam) - thus; प्रतिकृतम् (pratikṛtam) - counteracted; मन्ये (manye) - I think; ज्वलतः (jvalataḥ) - of the blazing; कृष्णवर्त्मनः (kṛṣṇavartmanaḥ) - of the black path (wick);]
(Then I will cover the hole with dust, O sons. Thus, I think it is counteracted for the blazing black path (wick).)

तत एष्याम्यतीतेऽग्नौ विहर्तुं पांसुसञ्चयम्। रोचतामेष वोपायो विमोक्षाय हुताशनात् ॥१-२२१-१७॥
tata eṣyāmy atīte'gnau vihartuṃ pāṃsusañcayam| rocatām eṣa vo pāyo vimokṣāya hutāśanāt ॥1-221-17॥
[तत् (tat) - then; एष्यामि (eṣyāmi) - I shall go; अतीते (atīte) - when passed; अग्नौ (agnau) - in the fire; विहर्तुम् (vihartum) - to play; पांसु-सञ्चयम् (pāṃsu-sañcayam) - heap of sand; रोचताम् (rocatām) - let it be pleasing; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; वः (vaḥ) - to you; उपायः (upāyaḥ) - means; विमोक्षाय (vimokṣāya) - for release; हुताशनात् (hutāśanāt) - from the fire;]
(Then I shall go, when passed, into the fire to play in the heap of sand. Let this means be pleasing to you for release from the fire.)
Then I will go, after the time has passed, to play in the heap of sand in the fire. Let this method be agreeable to you for release from the fire. (1-221-17)
शार्ङ्गका ऊचुः॥

अबर्हान्मांसभूतान्नः क्रव्यादाखुर्विनाशयेत्। पश्यमाना भयमिदं न शक्ष्यामो निषेवितुम् ॥१-२२१-१८॥
abarhān māṃsabhūtān naḥ kravyādākhur vināśayet | paśyamānā bhayam idaṃ na śakṣyāmo niṣevitum ॥1-221-18॥
[अबर्हात् (abarhāt) - from the unworthy; मांसभूतान् (māṃsabhūtān) - those who are of flesh; नः (naḥ) - us; क्रव्यादः (kravyādaḥ) - the flesh-eater; अखुः (akhuḥ) - the rat; विनाशयेत् (vināśayet) - should destroy; पश्यमानाः (paśyamānāḥ) - seeing; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; इदम् (idam) - this; न (na) - not; शक्ष्यामः (śakṣyāmaḥ) - we shall be able; निषेवितुम् (niṣevitum) - to remain;]
(From the unworthy, the flesh-eater rat should destroy those who are of flesh, us. Seeing this fear, we shall not be able to remain.)
The flesh-eating rat should destroy us, who are of flesh, from the unworthy. Seeing this danger, we will not be able to stay here. (1-221-18)
कथमग्निर्न नो दह्यात्कथमाखुर्न भक्षयेत्। कथं न स्यात्पिता मोघः कथं माता ध्रियेत नः ॥१-२२१-१९॥
katham agnir na no dahyāt katham ākhuḥ na bhakṣayet। kathaṃ na syāt pitā moghaḥ kathaṃ mātā dhriyeta naḥ ॥1-221-19॥

How can it be that fire does not burn us? How can the mouse not eat? How can the father not be in vain? How can the mother be sustained for us? (1-221-19)
बिल आखोर्विनाशः स्यादग्नेराकाशचारिणाम्। अन्ववेक्ष्यैतदुभयं श्रेयान्दाहो न भक्षणम् ॥१-२२१-२०॥
bila ākhorvināśaḥ syād agner ākāśacāriṇām। anvavekṣyaitad ubhayaṃ śreyān dāho na bhakṣaṇam ॥1-221-20॥
[बिल (bila) - hole; आखोः (ākhoḥ) - of the rat; विनाशः (vināśaḥ) - destruction; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; अग्नेः (agner) - of fire; आकाशचारिणाम् (ākāśacāriṇām) - of those moving in the sky; अन्ववेक्ष्य (anvavekṣya) - having considered; एतद् (etad) - this; उभयम् (ubhayam) - both; श्रेयान् (śreyān) - better; दाहः (dāhaḥ) - burning; न (na) - not; भक्षणम् (bhakṣaṇam) - eating;]
(Destruction of the rat's hole would be by fire of those moving in the sky. Having considered this, of both, burning is better, not eating.)
The destruction of the rat's hole can be accomplished by fire from those who move in the sky. Considering both options, burning is preferable to eating. (1-221-20)
गर्हितं मरणं नः स्यादाखुना खादता बिले। शिष्टादिष्टः परित्यागः शरीरस्य हुताशनात् ॥१-२२१-२१॥
garhitaṃ maraṇaṃ naḥ syād ākhunā khādatā bile। śiṣṭādiṣṭaḥ parityāgaḥ śarīrasya hutāśanāt ॥1-221-21॥
[गर्हितं (garhitaṃ) - condemned; मरणं (maraṇaṃ) - death; नः (naḥ) - our; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; आखुना (ākhunā) - by a rat; खादता (khādatā) - while eating; बिले (bile) - in the hole; शिष्ट (śiṣṭa) - by the noble; आदिष्टः (ādiṣṭaḥ) - commanded; परित्यागः (parityāgaḥ) - abandonment; शरीरस्य (śarīrasya) - of the body; हुताशनात् (hutāśanāt) - in the fire;]
(Condemned death for us would be by a rat eating (us) in the hole. The abandonment of the body in fire as commanded by the noble.)
For us, a death by being eaten by a rat in a hole would be disgraceful. The abandonment of the body in fire, as instructed by the noble, is preferable. (1-221-21)
