Pancharatra: In spite of repeated appeals Sharngakas refuse to enter the hole.
जरितोवाच॥
jaritovāca॥
[जरितः (jaritaḥ) - the sage Jarita; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(The sage Jarita said.)
Jarita spoke.
अस्माद्बिलान्निष्पतितं श्येन आखुं जहार तम्। क्षुद्रं गृहीत्वा पादाभ्यां भयं न भविता ततः ॥१-२२२-१॥
asmādbilānniṣpatitaṃ śyena ākhuṃ jahāra tam। kṣudraṃ gṛhītvā pādābhyāṃ bhayaṃ na bhavitā tataḥ ॥1-222-1॥
[अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; बिलात् (bilāt) - from the hole; निष्पतितं (niṣpatitam) - emerged; श्येनः (śyenaḥ) - hawk; आखुम् (ākhum) - mouse; जहार (jahāra) - seized; तम् (tam) - him; क्षुद्रं (kṣudram) - small; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having seized; पादाभ्यां (pādābhyām) - with (its) feet; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; न (na) - not; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; ततः (tataḥ) - from that;]
(From this hole, having emerged, the hawk seized the mouse; having grasped the small one with its feet, from that there will not be fear.)
As soon as the mouse emerged from this hole, the hawk seized it; having caught the small creature with its feet, there will be no more fear from that. (1-222-1)
शार्ङ्गका ऊचुः॥
śārṅgakā ūcuḥ॥
[शार्ङ्गका (śārṅgakā) - descendants of Śārṅga; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said;]
(The descendants of Śārṅga said.)
The Śārṅgakas said.
न हृतं तं वयं विद्मः श्येनेनाखुं कथञ्चन। अन्येऽपि भवितारोऽत्र तेभ्योऽपि भयमेव नः ॥१-२२२-२॥
na hṛtaṃ taṃ vayaṃ vidmaḥ śyenena ākhuṃ kathañcana। anye'pi bhavitāraḥ atra tebhyaḥ api bhayam eva naḥ ॥1-222-2॥
[न (na) - not; हृतं (hṛtam) - taken away; तं (taṃ) - that; वयं (vayaṃ) - we; विद्मः (vidmaḥ) - know; श्येनेन (śyenena) - by the hawk; आखुं (ākhuṃ) - mouse; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; अन्ये (anye) - others; अपि (api) - also; भवितारः (bhavitāraḥ) - will be (future ones); अत्र (atra) - here; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - from them; अपि (api) - also; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; एव (eva) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - for us;]
(Not taken away that we know by the hawk the mouse in any way. Others also will be here; from them also fear indeed for us.)
We do not know in any way whether the hawk has taken away that mouse. There will be others here as well; from them too, there is certainly fear for us. (1-222-2)
संशयो ह्यग्निरागच्छेद्दृष्टं वायोर्निवर्तनम्। मृत्युर्नो बिलवासिभ्यो भवेन्मातरसंशयम् ॥१-२२२-३॥
saṃśayo hy agnir āgacched dṛṣṭaṃ vāyor nivartanam | mṛtyur no bilavāsibhyo bhaven mātara saṃśayam ॥1-222-3॥
[संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; हि (hi) - indeed; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; आगच्छेत् (āgacchet) - may come; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of wind; निवर्तनम् (nivartanam) - return; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; नः (naḥ) - to us; बिलवासिभ्यः (bilavāsibhyaḥ) - from the dwellers of holes; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - O mothers; संशयम् (saṃśayam) - doubt;]
(Doubt indeed: fire may come, the return of wind is seen; death may be to us from the dwellers of holes, O mothers, doubt.)
There is indeed doubt: fire may come, the return of the wind is seen; death may come to us from the dwellers of holes, O mothers, there is doubt. (1-222-3)
निःसंशयात्संशयितो मृत्युर्मातर्विशिष्यते। चर खे त्वं यथान्यायं पुत्रान्वेत्स्यसि शोभनान् ॥१-२२२-४॥
niḥsaṃśayāt saṃśayito mṛtyur mātar viśiṣyate। cara khe tvaṃ yathānyāyaṃ putrān vetsyasi śobhanān ॥1-222-4॥
[निःसंशयात् (niḥsaṃśayāt) - without doubt; संशयितः (saṃśayitaḥ) - doubtful; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; मातर् (mātar) - O mother; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - is superior; चर (cara) - go; खे (khe) - in the sky; त्वम् (tvam) - you; यथा (yathā) - as; अन्यायम् (anyāyam) - improperly; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; वेत्स्यसि (vetsyasi) - you will find; शोभनान् (śobhanān) - excellent;]
(Without doubt, doubtful death, O mother, is superior. Go in the sky, you, as improperly, sons, you will find, excellent.)
O mother, without doubt, a doubtful death is preferable. Go through the sky; you will find your excellent sons, though not in the proper way. (1-222-4)
जरितोवाच॥
jaritovāca॥
[जरितः (jaritaḥ) - the sage Jarita; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(The sage Jarita said.)
The sage Jarita spoke.
अहं वै श्येनमायान्तमद्राक्षं बिलमन्तिकात्। सञ्चरन्तं समादाय जहाराखुं बिलाद्बली ॥१-२२२-५॥
ahaṃ vai śyenam āyāntam adrākṣam bilam antikāt। sañcarantaṃ samādāya jahāra akhuṃ bilāt balī ॥1-222-5॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; वै (vai) - indeed; श्येनम् (śyenam) - hawk; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - coming; अद्राक्षम् (adrākṣam) - I saw; बिलम् (bilam) - hole; अन्तिकात् (antikāt) - near; सञ्चरन्तम् (sañcarantam) - moving about; समादाय (samādāya) - having seized; जहार (jahāra) - carried off; अखुम् (akhuṃ) - mouse; बिलात् (bilāt) - from the hole; बली (balī) - the strong one;]
(I indeed saw a hawk coming near the hole; having seized the moving (mouse), the strong one carried off the mouse from the hole.)
I truly saw a hawk approaching the hole; the strong one seized the moving mouse and carried it away from the hole. (1-222-5)
तं पतन्तमहं श्येनं त्वरिता पृष्ठतोऽन्वगाम्। आशिषोऽस्य प्रयुञ्जाना हरतो मूषकं बिलात् ॥१-२२२-६॥
taṃ patantam ahaṃ śyenaṃ tvaritā pṛṣṭhato'nvagām | āśiṣo'sya prayuñjānā harato mūṣakaṃ bilāt ||1-222-6||
[तं (taṃ) - him; पतन्तम् (patantam) - falling; अहम् (aham) - I; श्येनम् (śyenaṃ) - hawk; त्वरिता (tvaritā) - swiftly; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; अन्वगाम् (anvagām) - I followed; आशिषः (āśiṣaḥ) - blessings; अस्य (asya) - his; प्रयुञ्जाना (prayuñjānā) - uttering; हरतः (harataḥ) - carrying away; मूषकम् (mūṣakam) - mouse; बिलात् (bilāt) - from the hole;]
(I, swiftly, from behind, followed that falling hawk, uttering blessings for him as he was carrying away the mouse from the hole.)
I quickly followed that falling hawk from behind, uttering blessings for him as he carried the mouse out of the hole. (1-222-6)
यो नो द्वेष्टारमादाय श्येनराज प्रधावसि। भव त्वं दिवमास्थाय निरमित्रो हिरण्मयः ॥१-२२२-७॥
yo no dveṣṭāram-ādāya śyenarāja pradhāvasi। bhava tvaṃ divam-āsthāya niramitro hiraṇmayaḥ ॥1-222-7॥
[यो (yaḥ) - who; नः (naḥ) - our; द्वेष्टारम् (dveṣṭāram) - enemy; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; श्येनराज (śyenarāja) - O king of hawks; प्रधावसि (pradhāvasi) - you run forth; भव (bhava) - be; त्वम् (tvam) - you; दिवम् (divam) - heaven; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having ascended; निरमित्रः (niramitraḥ) - without enemies; हिरण्मयः (hiraṇmayaḥ) - golden;]
(Who, having taken our enemy, O king of hawks, you run forth. Be you, having ascended heaven, without enemies, golden.)
O king of hawks, who carries away our enemy, run swiftly. Ascend to heaven, and be golden, free from enemies. (1-222-7)
यदा स भक्षितस्तेन क्षुधितेन पतत्रिणा। तदाहं तमनुज्ञाप्य प्रत्युपायां गृहान्प्रति ॥१-२२२-८॥
yadā sa bhakṣitastena kṣudhitenapatatriṇā। tadāhaṃ tamanujñāpya pratyupāyāṃ gṛhānprati ॥1-222-8॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; सः (saḥ) - he; भक्षितः (bhakṣitaḥ) - eaten; तेन (tena) - by him; क्षुधितेन (kṣudhitenā) - by the hungry; पतत्रिणा (patatriṇā) - by the bird; तदा (tadā) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; तम् (tam) - him; अनुज्ञाप्य (anujñāpya) - having permitted; प्रत्युपायाम् (pratyupāyām) - on the way back; गृहान् (gṛhān) - to the houses; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(When he was eaten by that hungry bird, then, having permitted him, I returned towards the houses on the way back.)
When he was eaten by the hungry bird, I, having permitted him, returned towards the houses on my way back. (1-222-8)
प्रविशध्वं बिलं पुत्रा विश्रब्धा नास्ति वो भयम्। श्येनेन मम पश्यन्त्या हृत आखुर्न संशयः ॥१-२२२-९॥
praviśadhvaṃ bilaṃ putrā viśrabdhā nāsti vo bhayam। śyenena mama paśyantyā hṛta ākhur na saṃśayaḥ ॥1-222-9॥
[प्रविशध्वं (praviśadhvaṃ) - enter; (imperative, plural; बिलं (bilaṃ) - hole; (accusative singular; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; (vocative plural; विश्रब्धाः (viśrabdhāḥ) - confident; (vocative plural; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; वः (vaḥ) - for you; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; श्येनेन (śyenena) - by the hawk; मम (mama) - my; पश्यन्त्या (paśyantyā) - seeing; (instrumental singular, feminine; हृतः (hṛtaḥ) - taken; आखुः (ākhuḥ) - mouse; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Enter the hole, sons, confidently; there is no fear for you. By the hawk, seen by me, the mouse has been taken, no doubt.)
Enter the hole confidently, my sons; you have nothing to fear. The hawk has surely taken the mouse I saw, there is no doubt. (1-222-9)
शार्ङ्गका ऊचुः॥
śārṅgakā ūcuḥ॥
[शार्ङ्गका (śārṅgakā) - descendants of Śārṅga; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said;]
(descendants of Śārṅga said;)
The descendants of Śārṅga said.
न विद्म वै वयं मातर्हृतमाखुमितः पुरा। अविज्ञाय न शक्ष्यामो बिलमाविशतुं वयम् ॥१-२२२-१०॥
na vidma vai vayaṃ mātar hṛtam ākhu-mitaḥ purā। avijñāya na śakṣyāmo bilam āviśatuṃ vayam ॥1-222-10॥
[न (na) - not; विद्म (vidma) - we know; वै (vai) - indeed; वयम् (vayam) - we; मातर् (mātar) - O mother; हृतम् (hṛtam) - taken away; आखुमितः (ākhu-mitaḥ) - by the mouse; पुरा (purā) - before; अविज्ञाय (avijñāya) - without knowing; न (na) - not; शक्ष्यामः (śakṣyāmaḥ) - we shall be able; बिलम् (bilam) - the hole; आविशतुम् (āviśatum) - to enter; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(Not we know indeed, O mother, (what was) taken away by the mouse before. Without knowing, not we shall be able to enter the hole, we.)
O mother, we truly do not know what the mouse took away earlier. Without knowing this, we will not be able to enter the hole. (1-222-10)
जरितोवाच॥

(Jarita said.)
Jarita said.
अहं हि तं प्रजानामि हृतं श्येनेन मूषकम्। अत एव भयं नास्ति क्रियतां वचनं मम ॥१-२२२-११॥
ahaṃ hi taṃ prajānāmi hṛtaṃ śyenena mūṣakam। ata eva bhayaṃ nāsti kriyatāṃ vacanaṃ mama ॥1-222-11॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; (ego; self;) हि (hi) - indeed; (emphatic particle;) तं (taṃ) - that; (him;) प्रजानामि (prajānāmi) - I know; (I recognize;) हृतं (hṛtam) - carried away; (taken; stolen;) श्येनेन (śyenena) - by the hawk; (by the falcon;) मूषकम् (mūṣakam) - mouse; (rat;) अत (ata) - therefore; (from this;) एव (eva) - indeed; (certainly;) भयम् (bhayam) - fear; (danger;) नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; (is not;) क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; (may it be done;) वचनम् (vacanam) - word; (speech; statement;) मम (mama) - my; (of me;);]
(I indeed that know carried away by the hawk mouse. Therefore indeed fear does not exist. Let be done word my. (1-222-11))
I indeed know that the mouse was carried away by the hawk. Therefore, there is no fear; let my word be followed. (1-222-11)
शार्ङ्गका ऊचुः॥
śārṅgakā ūcuḥ॥
[शार्ङ्गका (śārṅgakāḥ) - descendants of Śārṅga; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said;]
(The descendants of Śārṅga said;)
The Śārṅgakas said.
न त्वं मिथ्योपचारेण मोक्षयेथा भयं महत्। समाकुलेषु ज्ञानेषु न बुद्धिकृतमेव तत् ॥१-२२२-१२॥
na tvaṃ mithyopacāreṇa mokṣayethā bhayaṃ mahat। samākuleṣu jñāneṣu na buddhikṛtameva tat ॥1-222-12॥
[न (na) - not; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मिथ्या-उपचारेण (mithyā-upacāreṇa) - by false conduct; मोक्षयेथा (mokṣayethā) - should liberate; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; महत् (mahat) - great; समाकुलेषु (samākuleṣu) - in the disturbed; ज्ञानेषु (jñāneṣu) - among knowledges; न (na) - not; बुद्धि-कृतम् (buddhi-kṛtam) - done by intellect; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Not you by false conduct should liberate great fear. In the disturbed knowledges, not that indeed done by intellect.)
You should not, by false conduct, dispel great fear. In the midst of confused knowledges, that is not truly accomplished by intellect alone. (1-222-12)
न चोपकृतमस्माभिर्न चास्मान्वेत्थ ये वयम्। पीड्यमाना भरस्यस्मान्का सती के वयं तव ॥१-२२२-१३॥
na copakṛtamasmābhir na cāsmān vettha ye vayam। pīḍyamānā bharasy asmān kā satī ke vayaṃ tava ॥1-222-13॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; उपकृतम् (upakṛtam) - benefited; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; वेत्थ (vettha) - you know; ये (ye) - who; वयम् (vayam) - we; पीड्यमानाः (pīḍyamānāḥ) - being afflicted; भरस्य (bharasya) - of Bharata; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; का (kā) - what; सती (satī) - being; के (ke) - who; वयम् (vayam) - we; तव (tava) - to you;]
(Not benefited by us, and you do not know us, who we are; being afflicted by Bharata, what being, who are we to you?)
We have not benefited you, nor do you know who we are; afflicted by Bharata, what are we, who are we to you? (1-222-13)
तरुणी दर्शनीयासि समर्था भर्तुरेषणे। अनुगच्छ स्वभर्तारं पुत्रानाप्स्यसि शोभनान् ॥१-२२२-१४॥
taruṇī darśanīyāsi samarthā bhartureṣaṇe। anugaccha svabhartāraṃ putrānāpsyasi śobhanān ॥1-222-14॥
[तरुणी (taruṇī) - young woman; दर्शनीयासि (darśanīyāsi) - you are worthy of being seen; समर्था (samarthā) - capable; भर्तुरेषणे (bhartur-eṣaṇe) - in seeking a husband; अनुगच्छ (anugaccha) - follow; स्वभर्तारम् (svabhartāram) - your own husband; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; आप्स्यसि (āpsyasi) - you will obtain; शोभनान् (śobhanān) - excellent;]
(Young woman, you are worthy of being seen, capable in seeking a husband. Follow your own husband; you will obtain excellent sons.)
O young woman, you are beautiful and capable of seeking a husband. Follow your own husband, and you will have excellent sons. (1-222-14)
वयमप्यग्निमाविश्य लोकान्प्राप्स्यामहे शुभान्। अथास्मान्न दहेदग्निरायास्त्वं पुनरेव नः ॥१-२२२-१५॥
vayam apy agnim āviśya lokān prāpsyāmahe śubhān। athāsmān na dahed agnir āyās tvaṃ punar eva naḥ ॥1-222-15॥
[वयम् (vayam) - we; अपि (api) - also; अग्निम् (agnim) - fire (accusative); आविश्य (āviśya) - having entered; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds (accusative plural); प्राप्स्यामहे (prāpsyāmahe) - we shall attain; शुभान् (śubhān) - auspicious (accusative plural); अथ (atha) - then; अस्मान् (asmān) - us (accusative plural); न (na) - not; दहेत् (dahet) - should burn; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire (nominative); आयात् (āyāt) - may come; त्वम् (tvam) - you; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - us (genitive/dative);]
(We also, having entered the fire, shall attain auspicious worlds. Then, let the fire not burn us; may you indeed come again to us.)
We too, by entering the fire, will reach auspicious worlds. Then, let the fire not burn us; may you, indeed, return to us again. (1-222-15)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; (name of the sage); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Vaiśampāyana said;)
Vaiśampāyana said.
एवमुक्ता ततः शार्ङ्गी पुत्रानुत्सृज्य खाण्डवे। जगाम त्वरिता देशं क्षेममग्नेरनाश्रयम् ॥१-२२२-१६॥
evamuktā tataḥ śārṅgī putrān utsṛjya khāṇḍave। jagāma tvaritā deśaṃ kṣemam agner anāśrayam ॥1-222-16॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ता (uktā) - having been addressed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शार्ङ्गी (śārṅgī) - the wielder of the Śārṅga bow (Arjuna); पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having left; खाण्डवे (khāṇḍave) - in Khāṇḍava; जगाम (jagāma) - went; त्वरिता (tvaritā) - hurriedly; देशम् (deśam) - place; क्षेमम् (kṣemam) - safe; अग्नेः (agner) - of Agni; अनाश्रयम् (anāśrayam) - without refuge;]
(Thus having been addressed, then Śārṅgī, having left his sons in Khāṇḍava, went hurriedly to a place safe from Agni, without refuge.)
Thus addressed, Śārṅgī then left his sons in Khāṇḍava and quickly went to a place safe from Agni, where there was no refuge. (1-222-16)
ततस्तीक्ष्णार्चिरभ्यागाज्ज्वलितो हव्यवाहनः। यत्र शार्ङ्गा बभूवुस्ते मन्दपालस्य पुत्रकाः ॥१-२२२-१७॥
tatastīkṣṇārcirabhyāgājjvalito havyavāhanaḥ। yatra śārṅgā babhūvuste mandapālasya putrakāḥ ॥1-222-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तीक्ष्ण-अर्चिः (tīkṣṇa-arciḥ) - with sharp flames; अभ्यागात् (abhyāgāt) - approached; ज्वलितः (jvalitaḥ) - blazing; हव्यवाहनः (havyavāhanaḥ) - Agni (the fire-god); यत्र (yatra) - where; शार्ङ्गाः (śārṅgāḥ) - the Sarngas (a kind of bird); बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; ते (te) - they; मन्दपालस्य (mandapālasya) - of Mandapala; पुत्रकाः (putrakāḥ) - sons;]
(Then the fire-god blazing with sharp flames approached, where the Sarngas, the sons of Mandapala, were.)
Then the blazing fire-god with sharp flames approached the place where the Sarnga birds, the sons of Mandapala, were. (1-222-17)
ते शार्ङ्गा ज्वलनं दृष्ट्वा ज्वलितं स्वेन तेजसा। जरितारिस्ततो वाचं श्रावयामास पावकम् ॥१-२२२-१८॥
te śārṅgā jvalanaṃ dṛṣṭvā jvalitaṃ svena tejasā| jaritāris tato vācaṃ śrāvayāmāsa pāvakam ॥1-222-18॥
[ते (te) - they; शार्ङ्गा (śārṅgāḥ) - the Śārṅgas; ज्वलनं (jvalanam) - fire; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; ज्वलितं (jvalitam) - blazing; स्वेन (svena) - by their own; तेजसा (tejasā) - splendor; जरितारिः (jaritāriḥ) - the enemy of Jarita (Agni); ततः (tataḥ) - then; वाचं (vācam) - speech; श्रावयामास (śrāvayāmāsa) - caused to be heard; पावकम् (pāvakam) - the purifier (Agni);]
(They, the Śārṅgas, having seen the fire blazing with their own splendor, then the enemy of Jarita (Agni) caused the purifier (Agni) to hear speech.)
The Śārṅgas, seeing the fire blazing with their own radiance, then Agni, the enemy of Jarita, addressed the purifier (Agni) with words. (1-222-18)

"Ōm! Lead me from the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, and from death to immortality. Let there be peace, peace, and peace. Ōm!" - Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.3.28
