पुरतः कृच्छ्रकालस्य धीमाञ्जागर्ति पूरुषः। स कृच्छ्रकालं सम्प्राप्य व्यथां नैवैति कर्हिचित् ॥१-२२३-१॥
purataḥ kṛcchrakālasya dhīmāñ jāgarti pūruṣaḥ। sa kṛcchrakālaṃ samprāpya vyathāṃ naiva eti karhicit ॥1-223-1॥
[पुरतः (purataḥ) - before; कृच्छ्रकालस्य (kṛcchrakālasya) - of difficult time; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; जागर्ति (jāgarti) - remains awake; पूरुषः (pūruṣaḥ) - person; सः (saḥ) - he; कृच्छ्रकालम् (kṛcchrakālam) - difficult time; सम्प्राप्य (samprāpya) - having attained; व्यथाम् (vyathām) - distress; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; एति (eti) - experiences; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - at any time;]
(Before a difficult time, a wise person remains awake. He, having attained a difficult time, does not indeed experience distress at any time.)
A wise person remains vigilant before difficult times. When he encounters hardship, he never experiences distress. (1-223-1)
यस्तु कृच्छ्रमसम्प्राप्तं विचेता नावबुध्यते। स कृच्छ्रकाले व्यथितो न प्रजानाति किञ्चन ॥१-२२३-२॥
yastu kṛcchramasamprāptaṃ vicetā nāvabudhyate। sa kṛcchrakāle vyathito na prajānāti kiñcana ॥1-223-2॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; कृच्छ्रम् (kṛcchram) - difficulty; असम्प्राप्तम् (asamprāptam) - not yet arrived; विचेता (vicetā) - the discerning one; न (na) - not; अवबुध्यते (avabudhyate) - perceives; सः (saḥ) - he; कृच्छ्रकाले (kṛcchrakāle) - at the time of difficulty; व्यथितः (vyathitaḥ) - afflicted; न (na) - not; प्रजानाति (prajānāti) - knows; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(But he who, when difficulty has not yet arrived, the discerning one does not perceive, he, afflicted at the time of difficulty, does not know anything.)
But if a discerning person does not recognize impending difficulty, then when adversity actually comes, he, being afflicted, is unable to understand anything. (1-223-2)
सारिसृक्व उवाच॥

dhīras tvam asi medhāvī prāṇakṛcchram idaṃ ca naḥ। śūraḥ prājño bahūnāṃ hi bhavaty eko na saṃśayaḥ॥1-223-3॥
[धीरः (dhīraḥ) - steadfast; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; मेधावी (medhāvī) - intelligent; प्राणकृच्छ्रम् (prāṇakṛcchram) - life-difficulty; इदं (idaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; नः (naḥ) - our; शूरः (śūraḥ) - heroic; प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - wise; बहूनाम् (bahūnām) - of many; हि (hi) - indeed; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Steadfast you are, intelligent, this life-difficulty also is ours; heroic, wise, of many indeed becomes one, not doubt.)
You are steadfast and intelligent; this hardship is ours as well. Indeed, among many, only one becomes heroic and wise—there is no doubt about it. (1-223-3)
स्तम्बमित्र उवाच॥

jyeṣṭhastrātā bhavati vai jyeṣṭho muñcati kṛcchrataḥ। jyeṣṭhaścenna prajānāti kanīyānkiṃ kariṣyati ॥1-223-4॥
[ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - elder; त्राता (trātā) - protector; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; वै (vai) - indeed; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - elder; मुञ्चति (muñcati) - releases; कृच्छ्रतः (kṛcchrataḥ) - from difficulty; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - elder; चेत् (cet) - if; न (na) - not; प्रजानाति (prajānāti) - knows; कनीयान् (kanīyān) - younger; किं (kiṃ) - what; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do;]
(The elder becomes the protector indeed; the elder releases (others) from difficulty. If the elder does not know, what will the younger do?)
The elder is indeed the protector; it is the elder who rescues from hardship. If the elder does not know, what can the younger possibly do? (1-223-4)

hiraṇyaretāstvarito jvalannāyāti naḥ kṣayam। saptajihvo'nalaḥ kṣāmo lelihānopasarpati ॥1-223-5॥
[हिरण्यरेताः (hiraṇyaretāḥ) - golden-semened; (one whose seed is gold); त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - swift; ज्वलन् (jvalan) - blazing; आयाति (āyāti) - comes; नः (naḥ) - to us; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - abode; सप्तजिह्वः (saptajihvaḥ) - seven-tongued; अनलः (analaḥ) - fire; क्षामः (kṣāmaḥ) - emaciated; लेलिहानः (lelihānaḥ) - licking; उपसर्पति (upasarpati) - approaches;]
(The golden-semened, swift, blazing (one) comes to our abode. The seven-tongued, emaciated fire, licking, approaches.)
The swift and blazing golden-semened one comes to our home. The seven-tongued, emaciated fire, licking, draws near. (1-223-5)

evam-ukto bhrātṛbhiḥ tu jaritāriḥ vibhāvasum। tuṣṭāva prāñjalir bhūtvā yathā tat śṛṇu pārthiva ॥1-223-6॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - by the brothers; तु (tu) - but; जरितारिः (jaritāriḥ) - the enemy of Jarita (Agni); विभावसुम् (vibhāvasum) - Agni; तुष्टाव (tuṣṭāva) - praised; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; यथा (yathā) - as; तत् (tat) - that; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]

ūrdhvaṃ cādhaśca gacchanti visarpanti ca pārśvataḥ। arciṣaste mahāvīrya raśmayaḥ savituryathā ॥1-223-8॥

(Upwards and downwards they go, and they spread sideways; those rays of great power, like the rays of Savitṛ (the Sun).)
The rays, possessing great power, move upwards, downwards, and spread sideways, just like the rays of Savitṛ (the Sun). (1-223-8)

mātā prapannā pitaraṃ na vidmaḥ; pakṣāś ca no na prajātābjaketo। na nastrātā vidyate'gne tvadanya; stasmāddhi naḥ parirakṣaikavīra ॥1-223-9॥

(Mother surrendered, father not we know; wings and our not born, O lotus-bannered. Not for us protector exists, O Agni, other than you; therefore indeed us protect completely, O sole hero.)
We do not know a mother who will shelter us, nor a father; nor do we have wings, O lotus-bannered one, for we are not born with them. For us, there is no protector except you, O Agni; therefore, O sole hero, protect us completely. (1-223-9)
यदग्ने ते शिवं रूपं ये च ते सप्त हेतयः। तेन नः परिरक्षाद्य ईडितः शरणैषिणः ॥१-२२३-१०॥
yad agne te śivaṃ rūpaṃ ye ca te sapta hetayaḥ। tena naḥ parirakṣādya īḍitaḥ śaraṇa-iṣiṇaḥ ॥1-223-10॥
[यत् (yat) - which; अग्ने (agne) - O Agni; ते (te) - your; शिवम् (śivam) - auspicious; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; सप्त (sapta) - seven; हेतयः (hetayaḥ) - flames; तेन (tena) - by that; नः (naḥ) - us; परिरक्ष (parirakṣa) - protect; अद्य (adya) - today; ईडितः (īḍitaḥ) - praised; शरणैषिणः (śaraṇa-iṣiṇaḥ) - those seeking refuge;]
(Which, O Agni, is your auspicious form and who are your seven flames, by that, protect us today, praised, those seeking refuge.)
O Agni, with your auspicious form and your seven flames, protect us today, you who are praised, for we are those seeking refuge. (1-223-10)
त्वमेवैकस्तपसे जातवेदो; नान्यस्तप्ता विद्यते गोषु देव। ऋषीनस्मान्बालकान्पालयस्व; परेणास्मान्प्रैहि वै हव्यवाह ॥१-२२३-११॥
tvam-evaikaḥ tapase jātavedo; nānyas taptā vidyate goṣu deva| ṛṣīn asmān bālakān pālayasva; pareṇāsmān praihi vai havyavāha ॥1-223-11॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; तपसे (tapase) - for austerity; जातवेदः (jātavedaḥ) - O Jātaveda (Agni, knower of all births); न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; तप्तः (taptaḥ) - heated (purified by austerity); विद्यते (vidyate) - is found; गोषु (goṣu) - among cows; देव (deva) - O god; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - the sages; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; बालकान् (bālakān) - children; पालयस्व (pālayasva) - protect; परेण (pareṇa) - by the other (means); अस्मान् (asmān) - us; प्रैहि (praihi) - send forth; वै (vai) - indeed; हव्यवाह (havyavāha) - O carrier of oblations (Agni);]
(You indeed alone for austerity, O Jātaveda; not other heated (purified by austerity) is found among cows, O god. The sages, us children, protect; by the other (means) us send forth indeed, O carrier of oblations (Agni).)
You alone, O Jātaveda, are fit for austerity; no other is found purified among the cows, O god. Protect us sages and children; by other means, send us forth indeed, O carrier of oblations (Agni). (1-223-11)

sarvamagne tvamevaikastvayi sarvamidaṃ jagat। tvaṃ dhārayasi bhūtāni bhuvanaṃ tvaṃ bibharṣi ca ॥1-223-12॥
[सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; अग्ने (agne) - O Agni; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; only; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; alone; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; इदं (idaṃ) - this; जगत् (jagat) - world; universe; त्वम् (tvam) - you; धारयसि (dhārayasi) - support; uphold; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; creatures; भुवनम् (bhuvanam) - world; realm; त्वम् (tvam) - you; बिभर्षि (bibharṣi) - bear; carry; च (ca) - and;]
(All, O Agni, you indeed alone; in you all this world (exists). You support the beings, the world you bear also.)
O Agni, you alone are everything; in you exists this entire universe. You uphold all beings, and you also sustain the world. (1-223-12)
त्वमग्निर्हव्यवाहस्त्वं त्वमेव परमं हविः। मनीषिणस्त्वां यजन्ते बहुधा चैकधैव च ॥१-२२३-१३॥
tvam agnir havyavāhas tvaṃ tvam eva paramaṃ haviḥ। manīṣiṇas tvāṃ yajante bahudhā ca ekadhā eva ca ॥1-223-13॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni; (fire;) हव्यवाहः (havyavāhaḥ) - carrier of offerings; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; हविः (haviḥ) - offering; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; यजन्ते (yajante) - worship; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; च (ca) - and; एकधा (ekadhā) - in one way; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(You are Agni, the carrier of offerings; you indeed are the supreme offering. The wise worship you in many ways and in one way indeed also.)

सृष्ट्वा लोकांस्त्रीनिमान्हव्यवाह; प्राप्ते काले पचसि पुनः समिद्धः। सर्वस्यास्य भुवनस्य प्रसूति; स्त्वमेवाग्ने भवसि पुनः प्रतिष्ठा ॥१-२२३-१४॥
sṛṣṭvā lokāṃs trīn imān havyavāha; prāpte kāle pacasi punaḥ samiddhaḥ. sarvasya asya bhuvanasya prasūti; tvam eva agne bhavasi punaḥ pratiṣṭhā ॥1-223-14॥
[सृष्ट्वा (sṛṣṭvā) - having created; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; त्रीन् (trīn) - three; इमान् (imān) - these; हव्यवाह (havyavāha) - O carrier of oblations (Agni); प्राप्ते (prāpte) - when has arrived; काले (kāle) - time; पचसि (pacasi) - you cook; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; समिद्धः (samiddhaḥ) - being kindled; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; अस्य (asya) - this; भुवनस्य (bhuvanasya) - of the world; प्रसूति (prasūti) - origin; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; अग्ने (agne) - O Agni; भवसि (bhavasi) - you become; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रतिष्ठा (pratiṣṭhā) - foundation;]
(Having created these three worlds, O carrier of oblations; when the time arrives, you cook again, being kindled. Of all this world, the origin; you indeed, O Agni, become again the foundation.)
O Agni, having created these three worlds, you, the carrier of oblations, when the time comes, are kindled again and cook (the offerings). You are the origin and again the foundation of all this world. (1-223-14)
त्वमन्नं प्राणिनां भुक्तमन्तर्भूतो जगत्पते। नित्यं प्रवृद्धः पचसि त्वयि सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥१-२२३-१५॥
tvam annaṃ prāṇināṃ bhuktam antarbhūto jagatpate। nityaṃ pravṛddhaḥ pacasi tvayi sarvaṃ pratiṣṭhitam ॥1-223-15॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; अन्नम् (annam) - food; प्राणिनाम् (prāṇinām) - of living beings; भुक्तम् (bhuktam) - eaten; अन्तर्भूतः (antarbhūtaḥ) - entered within; जगत्पते (jagatpate) - O Lord of the world; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; प्रवृद्धः (pravṛddhaḥ) - increased; पचसि (pacasi) - you digest; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - established;]
(You, food, of living beings, eaten, entered within, O Lord of the world; always, increased, you digest; in you, all, established.)
O Lord of the world, you are the food eaten by living beings, having entered within; you always digest (it) as it increases; in you, all is established. (1-223-15)

sūryo bhūtvā raśmibhirjātavedo; bhūmerambho bhūmijātānrasāṃśca. viśvānādāya punarutsargakāle; sṛṣṭvā vṛṣṭyā bhāvayasīha śukra ॥1-223-16॥
[सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - sun; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; रश्मिभिः (raśmibhiḥ) - by rays; जातवेदः (jātavedaḥ) - fire; भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - of the earth; अम्भः (ambhaḥ) - water; भूमिजातान् (bhūmijātān) - born from earth; रसान् (rasān) - juices; च (ca) - and; विश्वान् (viśvān) - all; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; उत्सर्गकाले (utsargakāle) - at the time of release; सृष्ट्वा (sṛṣṭvā) - having created; वृष्ट्या (vṛṣṭyā) - by rain; भावयसि (bhāvayasi) - you nourish; इह (iha) - here; शुक्र (śukra) - O Śukra;]
(Having become the sun, O Jātaveda, by rays; water of the earth, and the juices born from the earth. Having taken all, again at the time of release; having created, by rain, you nourish here, O Śukra (1-223-16).)
O Śukra, having assumed the form of the sun as Jātaveda with rays, you draw up the water of the earth and the juices born from the earth. Taking all, at the time of release, you again create and nourish here by rain. (1-223-16)
त्वत्त एताः पुनः शुक्र वीरुधो हरितच्छदाः। जायन्ते पुष्करिण्यश्च समुद्रश्च महोदधिः ॥१-२२३-१७॥
tvatta etāḥ punaḥ śukra vīrudho haritacchadāḥ। jāyante puṣkariṇyaś ca samudraś ca mahodadhiḥ ॥1-223-17॥
[त्वत्त (tvatt) - from you; एताः (etāḥ) - these; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; शुक्र (śukra) - bright; वीरुधः (vīrudhaḥ) - plants; हरितच्छदाः (haritacchadāḥ) - with green leaves; जायन्ते (jāyante) - are born; पुष्करिण्यः (puṣkariṇyaḥ) - lotus-ponds; च (ca) - and; समुद्रः (samudraḥ) - ocean; च (ca) - and; महोदधिः (mahodadhiḥ) - great ocean;]
(From you these again bright plants with green leaves are born; lotus-ponds and the ocean and the great ocean;)
From you, these bright green-leaved plants are again born, as well as lotus-ponds, the ocean, and the great ocean. (1-223-17)
इदं वै सद्म तिग्मांशो वरुणस्य परायणम्। शिवस्त्राता भवास्माकं मास्मानद्य विनाशय ॥१-२२३-१८॥
idaṃ vai sadma tigmāṃśo varuṇasya parāyaṇam। śivastrātā bhavāsmākaṃ māsmānadya vināśaya ॥1-223-18॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; वै (vai) - indeed; सद्म (sadma) - abode; तिग्मांशो (tigmāṃśo) - O blazing one (Sun); वरुणस्य (varuṇasya) - of Varuṇa; परायणम् (parāyaṇam) - refuge; शिवः (śivaḥ) - Śiva; त्राता (trātā) - protector; भव (bhava) - be; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - of us; मा (mā) - do not; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; अद्य (adya) - today; विनाशय (vināśaya) - destroy;]
(This indeed is the abode, O blazing one (Sun), the refuge of Varuṇa. May Śiva be the protector of us; do not destroy us today.)
This is truly the abode, O radiant Sun, the refuge of Varuṇa. May Śiva be our protector; do not destroy us today. (1-223-18)
पिङ्गाक्ष लोहितग्रीव कृष्णवर्त्मन्हुताशन। परेण प्रैहि मुञ्चास्मान्सागरस्य गृहानिव ॥१-२२३-१९॥
piṅgākṣa lohitagrīva kṛṣṇavartmanhutāśana। pareṇa praihi muñcāsmānsāgarasya gṛhāniva ॥1-223-19॥
[पिङ्गाक्ष (piṅgākṣa) - tawny-eyed; लोहितग्रीव (lohitagrīva) - red-necked; कृष्णवर्त्मन् (kṛṣṇavartman) - dark-path; हुताशन (hutāśana) - fire; परेण (pareṇa) - by the other; प्रैहि (praihi) - go; मुञ्च (muñca) - release; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; सागरस्य (sāgarasya) - of the ocean; गृहान् (gṛhān) - houses; इव (iva) - like;]
(O tawny-eyed, red-necked, dark-path fire! By the other way, go, release us from the houses of the ocean as if (they were) houses.)
O fire with tawny eyes, red neck, and dark path! Go by another way and release us from the dwellings of the ocean as if they were houses. (1-223-19)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

एवमुक्तो जातवेदा द्रोणेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा। द्रोणमाह प्रतीतात्मा मन्दपालप्रतिज्ञया ॥१-२२३-२०॥
evamukto jātavedā droṇenākliṣṭakarmaṇā। droṇamāha pratītātmā mandapālapratijñayā ॥1-223-20॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; जातवेदा (jātavedā) - Agni (fire deity); द्रोणेन (droṇena) - by Droṇa; अक्लिष्टकर्मणा (akliṣṭakarmaṇā) - by one whose actions are unwearied; द्रोणम् (droṇam) - to Droṇa; आह (āha) - said; प्रतीतात्मा (pratītātmā) - with a confident mind; मन्दपालप्रतिज्ञया (mandapālapratijñayā) - by the vow of Mandapāla;]
(Thus addressed, Jātavedā (Agni), by Droṇa whose actions are unwearied, said to Droṇa, with a confident mind, by the vow of Mandapāla.)
Thus, when addressed by Droṇa, whose actions are tireless, Jātavedā (Agni), with a confident mind, spoke to Droṇa, in accordance with the vow of Mandapāla. (1-223-20)
ऋषिर्द्रोणस्त्वमसि वै ब्रह्मैतद्व्याहृतं त्वया। ईप्सितं ते करिष्यामि न च ते विद्यते भयम् ॥१-२२३-२१॥
ṛṣir droṇas tvam asi vai brahmaitad vyāhṛtaṃ tvayā। īpsitaṃ te kariṣyāmi na ca te vidyate bhayam ॥1-223-21॥
[ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - seer; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; वै (vai) - indeed; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; एतत् (etat) - this; व्याहृतम् (vyāhṛtam) - uttered; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; ईप्सितम् (īpsitam) - desired; ते (te) - by you; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]
(Seer Droṇa you are indeed; this Brahman uttered by you; desired by you I shall do; and to you there is no fear.)
You are indeed the seer Droṇa; this Brahman has been uttered by you. I shall do what you desire, and for you there is no fear. (1-223-21)
मन्दपालेन यूयं हि मम पूर्वं निवेदिताः। वर्जयेः पुत्रकान्मह्यं दहन्दावमिति स्म ह ॥१-२२३-२२॥
mandapālena yūyaṃ hi mama pūrvaṃ niveditāḥ। varjayeḥ putrakān mahyaṃ dahann dāvam iti sma ha ॥1-223-22॥
[मन्दपालेन (mandapālena) - by Mandapala; यूयम् (yūyam) - you (all); हि (hi) - indeed; मम (mama) - my; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; निवेदिताः (niveditāḥ) - were informed; वर्जयेः (varjayeḥ) - you should spare; पुत्रकान् (putrakān) - sons; मह्यम् (mahyaṃ) - to me; दहन् (dahan) - burning; दावम् (dāvam) - forest fire; इति (iti) - thus; स्म (sma) - indeed; ह (ha) - verily;]
(By Mandapala, you indeed were previously informed: "You should spare my sons for me while burning the forest fire"—thus indeed verily.)
Mandapala had previously informed you: "While burning the forest fire, please spare my sons for my sake"—thus he spoke. (1-223-22)
यच्च तद्वचनं तस्य त्वया यच्चेह भाषितम्। उभयं मे गरीयस्तद्ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते ॥ भृशं प्रीतोऽस्मि भद्रं ते ब्रह्मन्स्तोत्रेण ते विभो ॥१-२२३-२३॥
yacca tadvacanaṃ tasya tvayā yaccēha bhāṣitam। ubhayaṃ me garīyastadbrūhi kiṃ karavāṇi te ॥ bhṛśaṃ prīto'smi bhadraṃ te brahmanstotreṇa te vibho ॥1-223-23॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; तस्य (tasya) - of him; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; भाषितम् (bhāṣitam) - spoken; उभयम् (ubhayam) - both; मे (me) - to me; गरीयः (garīyaḥ) - more weighty; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; किम् (kim) - what; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - shall I do; ते (te) - for you; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - well-being; ते (te) - to you; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; स्तोत्रेण (stotreṇa) - by the hymn; ते (te) - of you; विभो (vibho) - O Lord;]
(And that speech of his, and what has been spoken here by you, both are more weighty to me; tell (me), what shall I do for you? I am exceedingly pleased; well-being to you, O Brahman, by your hymn, O Lord.)
Both the words spoken by him and what you have spoken here are of great importance to me; tell me, what shall I do for you? I am greatly pleased; may well-being be yours, O Brahman, by your hymn, O Lord. (1-223-23)

इमे मार्जारकाः शुक्र नित्यमुद्वेजयन्ति नः। एतान्कुरुष्व दंष्ट्रासु हव्यवाह सबान्धवान् ॥१-२२३-२४॥
ime mārjārakāḥ śukra nityam udvejayanti naḥ। etān kuruṣva daṃṣṭrāsu havyavāha sabāndhavān ॥1-223-24॥
[इमे (ime) - these; मार्जारकाः (mārjārakāḥ) - cats; शुक्र (śukra) - O Śukra; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; उद्वेजयन्ति (udvejayanti) - disturb; नः (naḥ) - us; एतान् (etān) - these; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - place; दंष्ट्रासु (daṃṣṭrāsu) - in (your) jaws; हव्यवाह (havyavāha) - O Agni (carrier of oblations); सबान्धवान् (sabāndhavān) - with their relatives;]
(These cats, O Śukra, always disturb us. Place these, O Agni, with their relatives, in (your) jaws.)
O Śukra, these cats always trouble us. O Agni, place these cats along with their relatives into your jaws. (1-223-24)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

तथा तत्कृतवान्वह्निरभ्यनुज्ञाय शार्ङ्गकान्। ददाह खाण्डवं चैव समिद्धो जनमेजय ॥१-२२३-२५॥
tathā tatkṛtavānvahnirabhyanujñāya śārṅgakān। dadāha khāṇḍavaṃ caiva samiddho janamejaya ॥1-223-25॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तत् (tat) - that; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - having done; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - Agni; अभ्यनुज्ञाय (abhyanujñāya) - having been permitted; शार्ङ्गकान् (śārṅgakān) - the bearers of Śārṅga (Arjuna and Kṛṣṇa); ददाह (dadāha) - burned; खाण्डवम् (khāṇḍavam) - Khāṇḍava forest; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समिद्धः (samiddhaḥ) - kindled; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - O Janamejaya;]
(Thus, having done that, Agni, having been permitted by the bearers of Śārṅga, burned the Khāṇḍava forest indeed, being kindled, O Janamejaya.)
Thus, after receiving permission from the bearers of Śārṅga, Agni, now kindled, burned the Khāṇḍava forest, O Janamejaya. (1-223-25)
