मन्दपालोऽपि कौरव्य चिन्तयानः सुतांस्तदा। उक्तवानप्यशीतांशुं नैव स स्म न तप्यते ॥१-२२४-१॥
mandapālo'pi kauravya cintayānaḥ sutāṃstadā। uktavānapyaśītāṃśuṃ naiva sa sma na tapyate ॥1-224-1॥
[मन्दपालः (mandapālaḥ) - Mandapala; (proper noun, name of a sage); अपि (api) - also; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; (addressing a Kaurava); चिन्तयानः (cintayānaḥ) - thinking; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; तदा (tadā) - then; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - said; अपि (api) - also; अशीतांशुं (aśītāṃśuṃ) - the moon; (literally: one with eighty (aśīti) rays (aṃśu)); नैव (naiva) - not at all; सः (saḥ) - he; स्म (sma) - indeed; न (na) - not; तप्यते (tapyate) - is tormented;]
(Mandapala also, O Kauravya, thinking of his sons then, said also to the moon; not at all he indeed is not tormented.)
Mandapala, O descendant of Kuru, while thinking of his sons at that time, also spoke to the moon; yet he was not at all tormented.
स तप्यमानः पुत्रार्थे लपितामिदमब्रवीत्। कथं न्वशक्ताः प्लवने लपिते मम पुत्रकाः ॥१-२२४-२॥
sa tapyamānaḥ putrārthe lapitām idam abravīt। kathaṃ nu aśaktāḥ plavane lapite mama putrakāḥ ॥1-224-2॥
[स (sa) - he; तप्यमानः (tapyamānaḥ) - being tormented; पुत्रार्थे (putrārthe) - for the sake of (his) son; लपिताम् (lapitām) - lamenting; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; कथम् (katham) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; अशक्ताः (aśaktāḥ) - unable; प्लवने (plavane) - in jumping; लपिते (lapite) - lamenting; मम (mama) - my; पुत्रकाः (putrakāḥ) - sons;]
(He, being tormented for the sake of (his) son, lamenting, said this: "How indeed are my sons, lamenting, unable in jumping?")
Tormented for his son, he lamented and said: "How is it that my sons, while lamenting, are unable to leap?" (1-224-2)
वर्धमाने हुतवहे वाते शीघ्रं प्रवायति। असमर्था विमोक्षाय भविष्यन्ति ममात्मजाः ॥१-२२४-३॥
vardhamāne hutavahe vāte śīghraṃ pravāyati। asamarthā vimokṣāya bhaviṣyanti mamātmajāḥ ॥1-224-3॥
[वर्धमाने (vardhamāne) - increasing; growing; हुतवहे (hutavahe) - in the fire; (that which carries the oblation); वाते (vāte) - in the wind; शीघ्रं (śīghraṃ) - quickly; प्रवायति (pravāyati) - blows; असमर्था (asamarthā) - incapable; विमोक्षाय (vimokṣāya) - for release; for liberation; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will become; ममात्मजाः (mamātmajāḥ) - my sons;]
(When the fire increases and the wind blows quickly, my sons, being incapable, will become unable for release.)
As the fire grows and the wind blows swiftly, my sons will be unable to free themselves. (1-224-3)
कथं न्वशक्ता त्राणाय माता तेषां तपस्विनी। भविष्यत्यसुखाविष्टा पुत्रत्राणमपश्यती ॥१-२२४-४॥
kathaṁ nvaśaktā trāṇāya mātā teṣāṁ tapasvinī। bhaviṣyatyasukhāviṣṭā putratrāṇamapaśyatī ॥1-224-4॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; अशक्ता (aśaktā) - not able; त्राणाय (trāṇāya) - for protection; माता (mātā) - mother; तेषां (teṣāṁ) - of them; तपस्विनी (tapasvinī) - ascetic; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; असुखाविष्टा (asukhāviṣṭā) - afflicted by unhappiness; पुत्रत्राणम् (putratrāṇam) - protection of (her) son; अपश्यती (apaśyatī) - not seeing;]
(How indeed not able for protection mother of them ascetic will become afflicted by unhappiness protection of (her) son not seeing.)
How will their ascetic mother, unable to protect, and afflicted by unhappiness, become, seeing no way to protect her son? (1-224-4)
कथं नु सरणेऽशक्तान्पतने च ममात्मजान्। सन्तप्यमाना अभितो वाशमानाभिधावती ॥१-२२४-५॥
kathaṁ nu saraṇe'śaktān patane ca mamātmajān। santapyamānā abhito vāśamānābhidhāvatī ॥1-224-5॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; सरणे (saraṇe) - in running; अशक्तान् (aśaktān) - incapable; पतने (patane) - in falling; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; आत्मजान् (ātmajān) - sons; सन्तप्यमाना (santapyamānā) - burning (with grief); अभितः (abhitaḥ) - all around; वा (vā) - or; शमाना (śamānā) - crying out; अभिधावती (abhidhāvatī) - runs towards;]
(How indeed (can I see) my sons, incapable in running and in falling, (while I am) burning (with grief), all around, or crying out, she runs towards (them)?)
How can I bear to see my sons, unable to run or even to fall, while I, burning with grief, run all around or cry out for them? (1-224-5)
जरितारिः कथं पुत्रः सारिसृक्वः कथं च मे। स्तम्बमित्रः कथं द्रोणः कथं सा च तपस्विनी ॥१-२२४-६॥
jaritāriḥ kathaṁ putraḥ sārisṛkvaḥ kathaṁ ca me| stambamitraḥ kathaṁ droṇaḥ kathaṁ sā ca tapasvinī ॥1-224-6॥

How is Jaritari's son? How is Sārisṛkva, and how is my Stambamitra? How is Droṇa, and how is she, the ascetic woman? (1-224-6)
लालप्यमानं तमृषिं मन्दपालं तथा वने। लपिता प्रत्युवाचेदं सासूयमिव भारत ॥१-२२४-७॥
lālapyamānaṃ tam ṛṣiṃ mandapālaṃ tathā vane। lapitā pratyuvācedaṃ sāsūyam iva bhārata ॥1-224-7॥
[लालप्यमानं (lālapyamānaṃ) - being addressed; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिं (ṛṣiṃ) - sage; मन्दपालं (mandapālaṃ) - Mandapala; तथा (tathā) - also; वने (vane) - in the forest; लपिता (lapitā) - the speaker; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सासूयम् (sāsūyam) - with jealousy; इव (iva) - as if; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Being addressed, that sage Mandapala also in the forest, the speaker replied this as if with jealousy, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, as Mandapala the sage was being addressed in the forest, the speaker replied to him as if with jealousy. (1-224-7)
न ते सुतेष्ववेक्षास्ति तानृषीनुक्तवानसि। तेजस्विनो वीर्यवन्तो न तेषां ज्वलनाद्भयम् ॥१-२२४-८॥
na te suteṣv avekṣā asti tān ṛṣīn uktavān asi। tejasvino vīryavanto na teṣāṃ jvalanāt bhayam ॥1-224-8॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; सुतेषु (suteṣu) - among sons; अवेक्षा (avekṣā) - regard; अस्ति (asti) - is; तान् (tān) - those; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - you have said; असि (asi) - are; तेजस्विनः (tejasvinaḥ) - brilliant ones; वीर्यवन्तः (vīryavantaḥ) - powerful ones; न (na) - not; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; ज्वलनात् (jvalanāt) - from fire; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]
(Not your regard is among sons; those sages you have said are brilliant ones, powerful ones; not of them from fire fear.)
You do not have regard for your sons; you have called those sages brilliant and powerful; they have no fear from fire. (1-224-8)
तथाग्नौ ते परीत्ताश्च त्वया हि मम संनिधौ। प्रतिश्रुतं तथा चेति ज्वलनेन महात्मना ॥१-२२४-९॥
tathāgnau te parīttāś ca tvayā hi mama saṃnidhau। pratiśrutaṃ tathā ceti jvalanena mahātmanā ॥1-224-9॥
[तथा (tathā) - in that way; अग्नौ (agnau) - in the fire; ते (te) - your; परीत्ताः (parīttāḥ) - protected; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हि (hi) - indeed; मम (mama) - my; संनिधौ (saṃnidhau) - in the presence; प्रतिश्रुतं (pratiśrutam) - promised; तथा (tathā) - thus; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; ज्वलनेन (jvalanena) - by the fire; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great soul;]
(In that way, in the fire, your protected (ones), and by you indeed, in my presence, (it was) promised thus and thus, by the fire, by the great soul.)
In this way, your protected ones, by you, indeed, in my presence, were promised thus by the great soul, by the fire. (1-224-9)
लोकपालोऽनृतां वाचं न तु वक्ता कथञ्चन। समर्थास्ते च वक्तारो न ते तेष्वस्ति मानसम् ॥१-२२४-१०॥
lokapālo'nṛtāṃ vācaṃ na tu vaktā kathaṃcana। samarthāste ca vaktāro na te teṣvasti mānasam ॥1-224-10॥
[लोकपालः (lokapālaḥ) - guardian of the world; अनृताम् (anṛtām) - untrue; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; वक्ता (vaktā) - speaker; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; समर्थाः (samarthāḥ) - capable; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; वक्तारः (vaktāraḥ) - speakers; न (na) - not; तेषु (teṣu) - in them; अस्ति (asti) - there is; मानसम् (mānasam) - mind;]
(The guardian of the world does not in any way speak untrue speech; they are capable speakers, but in them there is no mind.)
The guardian of the world never utters false words; though they are capable speakers, they lack true intention in their minds. (1-224-10)
तामेव तु ममामित्रीं चिन्तयन्परितप्यसे। ध्रुवं मयि न ते स्नेहो यथा तस्यां पुराभवत् ॥१-२२४-११॥
tāmeva tu mamāmitrīṃ cintayan paritapyase। dhruvaṃ mayi na te sneho yathā tasyāṃ purābhavat ॥1-224-11॥
[ताम्-एव (tām-eva) - her-only; तु (tu) - but; मम-अमित्रीम् (mama-amitrīm) - my-enemy (female); चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - thinking; परितप्यसे (paritapyase) - you are tormented; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; मयि (mayi) - in me; न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; स्नेहः (snehaḥ) - affection; यथा (yathā) - as; तस्याम् (tasyām) - in her; पुरा (purā) - formerly; अभवत् (abhavat) - was;]
(But thinking only of her, my enemy, you are tormented; certainly, your affection for me is not as it formerly was for her.)
But you are tormented, thinking only of her, my enemy; surely, your affection for me is not as it once was for her. (1-224-11)
न हि पक्षवता न्याय्यं निःस्नेहेन सुहृज्जने। पीड्यमान उपद्रष्टुं शक्तेनात्मा कथञ्चन ॥१-२२४-१२॥
na hi pakṣavatā nyāyyaṃ niḥsnehen suhṛj-jane। pīḍyamāna upadraṣṭuṃ śaktenātmā kathaṃcana॥1-224-12॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; पक्षवता (pakṣavatā) - by one with partiality; न्याय्यं (nyāyyaṃ) - just; rightful; निःस्नेहेन (niḥsnehen) - by one without affection; सुहृज्जने (suhṛj-jane) - in a dear person; पीड्यमान (pīḍyamāna) - being afflicted; उपद्रष्टुं (upadraṣṭuṃ) - to witness; शक्तेन (śaktena) - by one who is able; आत्मा (ātmā) - the self; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(Not indeed by one with partiality is it just, by one without affection, in a dear person being afflicted, to witness, by one who is able, the self, in any way.)
It is not just for one who is partial or for one without affection to witness the suffering of a dear person if one is able to help, in any way. (1-224-12)
गच्छ त्वं जरितामेव यदर्थं परितप्यसे। चरिष्याम्यहमप्येका यथा कापुरुषे तथा ॥१-२२४-१३॥
gaccha tvaṃ jaritāmeva yadarthaṃ paritapyase। cariṣyāmyahamapyekā yathā kāpuruṣe tathā ॥1-224-13॥
[गच्छ (gaccha) - go; (imperative, from √gam) त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; जरिताम् (jaritām) - to the old woman; (accusative singular of jaritṛ, old woman) एव (eva) - only; यदर्थं (yadartham) - for what purpose; परितप्यसे (paritapyase) - you are grieving; (from pari-√tap, to grieve) चरिष्यामि (cariṣyāmi) - I shall live; (future of √car, to move/live) अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; एका (ekā) - alone; (feminine singular) यथा (yathā) - just as; कापुरुषे (kāpuruṣe) - in a coward; (locative singular of kāpuruṣa, coward) तथा (tathā) - so; in that way;]
(Go you to the old woman only for what purpose you are grieving. I shall also live alone just as in a coward so.)
Go to the old woman for whom you are grieving. I too shall live alone, just as one does with a coward. (1-224-13)
मन्दपाल उवाच॥

Mandapāla said.
नाहमेवं चरे लोके यथा त्वमभिमन्यसे। अपत्यहेतोर्विचरे तच्च कृच्छ्रगतं मम ॥१-२२४-१४॥
nāham evaṃ care loke yathā tvam abhimanyase। apatyakhetor vicare tac ca kṛcchragataṃ mama ॥1-224-14॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; चरे (care) - act; move; लोके (loke) - in the world; यथा (yathā) - as; like; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अभिमन्यसे (abhimanyase) - think; suppose; अपत्यहेतोः (apatyahetor) - for the sake of offspring; विचरे (vicare) - I act; I move; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; कृच्छ्रगतं (kṛcchragataṃ) - gone to distress; afflicted; मम (mama) - my;]
(Not I thus act in the world as you think; for the sake of offspring I act, and that is afflicted for me.)
I do not act in this world as you suppose; I act for the sake of offspring, and that too is a source of distress for me. (1-224-14)
भूतं हित्वा भविष्येऽर्थे योऽवलम्बेत मन्दधीः। अवमन्येत तं लोको यथेच्छसि तथा कुरु ॥१-२२४-१५॥
bhūtaṃ hitvā bhaviṣye'rthe yo'valambeta mandadhīḥ। avamanyeta taṃ loko yathecchasi tathā kuru ॥1-224-15॥
[भूतम् (bhūtam) - past; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; भविष्ये (bhaviṣye) - in the future; अर्थे (arthe) - in the matter; यः (yaḥ) - who; अवलम्बेत (avalambeta) - would rely; मन्दधीः (mandadhīḥ) - dull-minded; अवमन्येत (avamanyeta) - would despise; तम् (tam) - him; लोकः (lokaḥ) - the world; यथा (yathā) - as; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; तथा (tathā) - so; कुरु (kuru) - do;]
(Having abandoned the past, whoever would rely on the matter of the future is dull-minded; the world would despise him; as you wish, so do.)
Whoever, abandoning the past, relies only on the future is of dull intellect; such a person is despised by the world. Do as you wish. (1-224-15)
एष हि ज्वलमानोऽग्निर्लेलिहानो महीरुहान्। द्वेष्यं हि हृदि सन्तापं जनयत्यशिवं मम ॥१-२२४-१६॥
eṣa hi jvalamāno'gnirlelihāno mahīruhān। dveṣyaṃ hi hṛdi santāpaṃ janayaty aśivaṃ mama ॥1-224-16॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; ज्वलमानः (jvalamānaḥ) - burning; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; लेलिहानः (lelihānaḥ) - licking; महीरुहान् (mahīruhān) - trees; द्वेष्यम् (dveṣyam) - hateful; हि (hi) - indeed; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; सन्तापम् (santāpam) - pain; जनयति (janayati) - generates; अशिवम् (aśivam) - inauspicious; मम (mama) - for me;]
(This indeed burning fire licking the trees, hateful indeed in the heart pain generates inauspicious for me.)
This burning fire, licking the trees, indeed generates inauspicious and hateful pain in my heart. (1-224-16)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said.
तस्माद्देशादतिक्रान्ते ज्वलने जरिता ततः। जगाम पुत्रकानेव त्वरिता पुत्रगृद्धिनी ॥१-२२४-१७॥
tasmād-deśād-atikrānte jvalane jaritā tataḥ। jagāma putrakān-iva tvaritā putragṛddhinī ॥1-224-17॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; देशात् (deśāt) - from region; अतिक्रान्ते (atikrānte) - having passed; ज्वलने (jvalane) - in fire; जरिता (jaritā) - having been burned; ततः (tataḥ) - then; जगाम (jagāma) - she went; पुत्रकान् (putrakān) - sons; इव (iva) - like; त्वरिता (tvaritā) - hurried; पुत्रगृद्धिनी (putragṛddhinī) - desiring sons;]
(From that region, having passed, having been burned in fire, then she went, like (one) hurried, desiring sons, to (her) sons.)
Having passed from that region and having been burned in the fire, then, desiring her sons, she hurried like one longing for her children. (1-224-17)
सा तान्कुशलिनः सर्वान्निर्मुक्ताञ्जातवेदसः। रोरूयमाणा कृपणा सुतान्दृष्टवती वने ॥१-२२४-१८॥
sā tānkuśalinaḥ sarvānnirmuktāñjātavedasaḥ। rorūyamāṇā kṛpaṇā sutāndṛṣṭavatī vane ॥1-224-18॥
[सा (sā) - she; तान् (tān) - them; कुशलिनः (kuśalinaḥ) - safe; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; निर्मुक्तान् (nirmuktān) - released; जातवेदसः (jātavedasaḥ) - from fire; रोरूयमाणा (rorūyamāṇā) - weeping loudly; कृपणा (kṛpaṇā) - distressed; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; दृष्टवती (dṛṣṭavatī) - having seen; वने (vane) - in the forest;]
(She, having seen all her sons, safe, released from fire, in the forest, distressed, weeping loudly.)
She saw all her sons, safe and freed from the fire, in the forest; distressed, she wept loudly. (1-224-18)
अश्रद्धेयतमं तेषां दर्शनं सा पुनः पुनः। एकैकशश्च तान्पुत्रान्क्रोशमानान्वपद्यत ॥१-२२४-१९॥
aśraddheyatamaṃ teṣāṃ darśanaṃ sā punaḥ punaḥ। ekaikaśaś ca tān putrān krośamānān vapadyata ॥1-224-19॥
[अश्रद्धेयतमं (aśraddheyatamam) - most unbelievable; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; दर्शनं (darśanam) - sight; सा (sā) - she; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एकैकशश् (ekaikaśaś) - one by one; च (ca) - and; तान् (tān) - those; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; क्रोशमानान् (krośamānān) - crying; वपद्यत (vapadyata) - approached;]
(The most unbelievable sight for them, she again and again, one by one, approached those sons who were crying.)
For them, it was the most unbelievable sight as she, again and again, approached each of her sons who were crying, one by one. (1-224-19)
ततोऽभ्यगच्छत्सहसा मन्दपालोऽपि भारत। अथ ते सर्व एवैनं नाभ्यनन्दन्त वै सुताः ॥१-२२४-२०॥
tato'bhyagacchatsahasā mandapālo'pi bhārata. atha te sarva evainaṃ nābhyanandanta vai sutāḥ ॥1-224-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; मन्दपालः (mandapālaḥ) - Mandapala (proper name); अपि (api) - also; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अथ (atha) - then; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; एनम् (enam) - him; न (na) - not; अभ्यनन्दन्त (abhyanandanta) - welcomed; वै (vai) - indeed; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons;]
(Then suddenly Mandapala also approached, O Bhārata. Then all his sons indeed did not welcome him.)
Then, O Bhārata, Mandapala suddenly arrived. However, all his sons did not welcome him at all. (1-224-20)
लालप्यमानमेकैकं जरितां च पुनः पुनः। नोचुस्ते वचनं किञ्चित्तमृषिं साध्वसाधु वा ॥१-२२४-२१॥
lālapyamānamekaikaṃ jaritāṃ ca punaḥ punaḥ। nocuste vacanaṃ kiñcittamṛṣiṃ sādhvasādhu vā ॥1-224-21॥
[लालप्यमानम् (lālapyamānam) - being spoken; एकैकम् (ekaikam) - each one; जरिताम् (jaritām) - by the singers; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; न (na) - not; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; ते (te) - they; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - even a little; तम् (tam) - to him; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; साधु (sādhu) - good; असाधु (asādhu) - not good; वा (vā) - or;]
(Being spoken again and again, each one of the singers did not say even a little word to that sage, whether good or not good.)
Though each of the singers was repeatedly addressed, none of them uttered even a single word to the sage, whether it was good or bad. (1-224-21)

ज्येष्ठः सुतस्ते कतमः कतमस्तदनन्तरः। मध्यमः कतमः पुत्रः कनिष्ठः कतमश्च ते ॥१-२२४-२२॥
jyeṣṭhaḥ sutas te katamaḥ katamas tad-anantaraḥ। madhyamaḥ katamaḥ putraḥ kaniṣṭhaḥ katamaś ca te ॥1-224-22॥
[ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - eldest; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; ते (te) - your; कतमः (katamaḥ) - which; कतमः (katamaḥ) - which; तत् (tat) - that; अनन्तरः (anantaraḥ) - immediately following; मध्यमः (madhyamaḥ) - middle; कतमः (katamaḥ) - which; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; कनिष्ठः (kaniṣṭhaḥ) - youngest; कतमः (katamaḥ) - which; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your;]
(Eldest son your which? Which that immediately following? Middle which son? Youngest which and your? (1-224-22))
Which is your eldest son? Which one comes immediately after him? Which is your middle son? Which is your youngest son? (1-224-22)
एवं ब्रुवन्तं दुःखार्तं किं मां न प्रतिभाषसे। कृतवानस्मि हव्याशे नैव शान्तिमितो लभे ॥१-२२४-२३॥
evaṃ bruvantaṃ duḥkhārtaṃ kiṃ māṃ na pratibhāṣase। kṛtavānasmi havyāśe naiva śāntimito labhe ॥1-224-23॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ब्रुवन्तं (bruvantam) - speaking; दुःखार्तं (duḥkhārtam) - afflicted with sorrow; किं (kiṃ) - why; मां (mām) - me; न (na) - not; प्रतिभाषसे (pratibhāṣase) - do you reply; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - I have done; अस्मि (asmi) - am; हव्याशे (havyāśe) - O Havyāśa (epithet); न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; शान्तिम् (śāntim) - peace; इतो (itaḥ) - from here; लभे (labhe) - do I obtain;]
(Thus (to one) speaking, afflicted with sorrow, why do you not reply to me? I have done (so), O Havyāśa, indeed I do not obtain peace from here.)
To one speaking thus, afflicted with sorrow, why do you not answer me? O Havyāśa, I have done (what I could), yet I do not find peace here. (1-224-23)
जरितोवाच॥

[जरितः (jaritaḥ) - the sage Jarita; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(The sage Jarita said.)
Jarita spoke.
किं ते ज्येष्ठे सुते कार्यं किमनन्तरजेन वा। किं च ते मध्यमे कार्यं किं कनिष्ठे तपस्विनि ॥१-२२४-२४॥
kiṁ te jyeṣṭhe sute kāryaṁ kim-anantarajena vā। kiṁ ca te madhyame kāryaṁ kiṁ kaniṣṭhe tapasvini ॥1-224-24॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; ते (te) - to you; ज्येष्ठे (jyeṣṭhe) - in the eldest; सुते (sute) - son; कार्यं (kāryaṁ) - to be done; किम् (kim) - what; अनन्तरजेन (anantarajena) - by the next-born; वा (vā) - or; किं (kiṁ) - what; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; मध्यमे (madhyame) - in the middle; कार्यं (kāryaṁ) - to be done; किं (kiṁ) - what; कनिष्ठे (kaniṣṭhe) - in the youngest; तपस्विनि (tapasvini) - O ascetic lady;]
(What is to be done by you in the eldest son, or by the next-born? And what is to be done by you in the middle one? What (is to be done) in the youngest, O ascetic lady?)
What should you do with your eldest son, or with the next-born? And what should you do with the middle one? What about the youngest, O ascetic lady? (1-224-24)
यस्त्वं मां सर्वशो हीनामुत्सृज्यासि गतः पुरा। तामेव लपितां गच्छ तरुणीं चारुहासिनीम् ॥१-२२४-२५॥
yastvaṃ māṃ sarvaśo hīnam utsṛjyāsi gataḥ purā। tām eva lapitāṃ gaccha taruṇīṃ cāruhāsinīm ॥1-224-25॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; माम् (mām) - me; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; हीनाम् (hīnam) - abandoned; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having left; असि (asi) - are; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; पुरा (purā) - formerly; ताम् (tām) - her; एव (eva) - only; लपिताम् (lapitām) - talkative; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; तरुणीम् (taruṇīm) - young woman; चारुहासिनीम् (cāruhāsinīm) - with beautiful smile;]
(Who you me entirely abandoned having left are gone formerly. Her only talkative go young woman with beautiful smile.)
You, who once entirely abandoned me and left long ago, go now to that very talkative young woman with the beautiful smile. (1-224-25)
मन्दपाल उवाच॥

[मन्दपाल (mandapāla) - Mandapala; (proper noun); उवाच (uvāca) - said; (from the root 'vac' - to speak);]

न स्त्रीणां विद्यते किञ्चिदन्यत्र पुरुषान्तरात्। सापत्नकमृते लोके भवितव्यं हि तत्तथा ॥१-२२४-२६॥
na strīṇāṃ vidyate kiñcid anyatra puruṣāntarāt। sāpatnakamṛte loke bhavitavyaṃ hi tat tathā ॥1-224-26॥
[न (na) - not; स्त्रीणां (strīṇām) - of women; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - apart from; पुरुषान्तरात् (puruṣāntarāt) - from another man; सापत्नकम् (sāpatnakam) - with co-wives; ऋते (ṛte) - except; लोके (loke) - in the world; भवितव्यम् (bhavitavyam) - must be; हि (hi) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(Not of women exists anything apart from another man; except with co-wives in the world must be indeed that thus.)
There is nothing for women apart from another man; except in the world where there are co-wives, it must indeed be so. (1-224-26)
सुव्रतापि हि कल्याणी सर्वलोकपरिश्रुता। अरुन्धती पर्यशङ्कद्वसिष्ठमृषिसत्तमम् ॥१-२२४-२७॥
suvratāpi hi kalyāṇī sarvalokapariśrutā। arundhatī paryaśaṅkad vasiṣṭham ṛṣisattamam ॥1-224-27॥
[सुव्रता (suvratā) - of good vows; अपि (api) - also; हि (hi) - indeed; कल्याणी (kalyāṇī) - auspicious one; सर्वलोकपरिश्रुता (sarvalokapariśrutā) - renowned in all worlds; अरुन्धती (arundhatī) - Arundhatī; पर्यशङ्कत् (paryaśaṅkat) - doubted; वसिष्ठम् (vasiṣṭham) - Vasiṣṭha; ऋषिसत्तमम् (ṛṣisattamam) - the best among sages;]
(Of good vows, also indeed the auspicious one, renowned in all worlds, Arundhatī doubted Vasiṣṭha, the best among sages.)
Even Arundhatī, the virtuous and renowned lady in all worlds, doubted Vasiṣṭha, the foremost among sages. (1-224-27)
विशुद्धभावमत्यन्तं सदा प्रियहिते रतम्। सप्तर्षिमध्यगं वीरमवमेने च तं मुनिम् ॥१-२२४-२८॥
viśuddhabhāvamatyantaṃ sadā priyahite ratam। saptarṣimadhyagaṃ vīramavamene ca taṃ munim ॥1-224-28॥
[विशुद्ध (viśuddha) - pure; भावम् (bhāvam) - state; अत्यन्तम् (atyantam) - utterly; सदा (sadā) - always; प्रिय (priya) - dear; हिते (hite) - beneficial; रतम् (ratam) - engaged; सप्तर्षि (saptarṣi) - seven sages; मध्यगम् (madhyagam) - among; वीरम् (vīram) - hero; अवमेने (avamene) - regarded; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him; मुनिम् (munim) - sage;]
(Pure in state, utterly always engaged in what is dear and beneficial; the hero among the seven sages regarded him, the sage, as well.)
He, whose mind was utterly pure and always engaged in what was dear and beneficial, was regarded as a hero among the seven sages, and as a sage. (1-224-28)
अपध्यानेन सा तेन धूमारुणसमप्रभा। लक्ष्यालक्ष्या नाभिरूपा निमित्तमिव लक्ष्यते ॥१-२२४-२९॥
apadhyānena sā tena dhūmāruṇasamaprabhā। lakṣyālakṣyā nābhirūpā nimittamiva lakṣyate ॥1-224-29॥
[अपध्यानेन (apadhyānena) - by inattentiveness; सा (sā) - she; तेन (tena) - by him; धूमारुणसमप्रभा (dhūmāruṇasamaprabhā) - having a radiance like smoke and red (sunrise); लक्ष्यालक्ष्या (lakṣyālakṣyā) - visible-invisible; नाभिरूपा (nābhirūpā) - having the form of a navel; निमित्तमिव (nimittam iva) - like a mark; लक्ष्यते (lakṣyate) - is perceived;]
(By inattentiveness, she by him, having a radiance like smoke and red, visible-invisible, having the form of a navel, like a mark, is perceived.)
Because of inattentiveness, she, with a radiance like smoke and sunrise, appears to him as something visible yet invisible, having the form of a navel, like a mark. (1-224-29)
अपत्यहेतोः सम्प्राप्तं तथा त्वमपि मामिह। इष्टमेवङ्गते हित्वा सा तथैव च वर्तसे ॥१-२२४-३०॥
apatyahetoḥ samprāptaṃ tathā tvam api mām iha। iṣṭam evaṃgate hitvā sā tathaiva ca vartase ॥1-224-30॥
[अपत्य-हेतोः (apatya-hetoḥ) - for the sake of offspring; सम्प्राप्तं (samprāptam) - obtained; तथा (tathā) - similarly; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; माम् (mām) - me; इह (iha) - here; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - desired; एवम्-गते (evam-gate) - in this situation; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; सा (sā) - she; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; वर्तसे (vartase) - you behave;]
(For the sake of offspring obtained, similarly you also me here, desired in this situation having abandoned, she in the same way and you behave.)
Just as one obtains something for the sake of offspring, in the same way, you too have abandoned me here, and she too acts in the same manner as you. (1-224-30)
नैव भार्येति विश्वासः कार्यः पुंसा कथञ्चन। न हि कार्यमनुध्याति भार्या पुत्रवती सती ॥१-२२४-३१॥
naiva bhāryeti viśvāsaḥ kāryaḥ puṃsā kathañcana। na hi kāryamanudhyāti bhāryā putravatī satī ॥1-224-31॥
[न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; इति (iti) - thus; विश्वासः (viśvāsaḥ) - trust; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - to be done; पुंसा (puṃsā) - by a man; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; कार्यं (kāryam) - work; अनुध्याति (anudhyāti) - reflects upon; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; पुत्रवती (putravatī) - having a son; सती (satī) - chaste woman;]
(Not indeed 'wife' thus trust to be done by a man in any way. Not indeed work reflects upon wife having a son chaste woman (1-224-31))
A man should never place trust in a wife as 'wife'; for a wife, even if she is chaste and has a son, does not truly reflect upon his work. (1-224-31)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; (name of the sage); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Vaiśampāyana said;)
Vaiśampāyana said.
ततस्ते सर्व एवैनं पुत्राः सम्यगुपासिरे। स च तानात्मजान्राजन्नाश्वासयितुमारभत् ॥१-२२४-३२॥
tataste sarva evainaṃ putrāḥ samyagupāsire। sa ca tānātmajānrājannāśvāsayitumārabhat ॥1-224-32॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; एनम् (enam) - him; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; उपासिरे (upāsire) - attended; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; तान् (tān) - those; आत्मजान् (ātmajān) - sons; राजन् (rājan) - O king; आश्वासयितुम् (āśvāsayitum) - to console; आरभत् (ārabhat) - began;]
(Then they all indeed attended him, the sons, properly. He and those sons, O king, to console, began.)
Then all his sons properly attended to him. And he, O king, began to console those sons. (1-224-32)
