Pancharatra: Partha’s boon and Shakra’s advice to please Mahadeva.

युष्माकं परिरक्षार्थं विज्ञप्तो ज्वलनो मया। अग्निना च तथेत्येवं पूर्वमेव प्रतिश्रुतम् ॥१-२२५-१॥
yuṣmākaṃ parirakṣārthaṃ vijñapto jvalano mayā। agninā ca tathetyevaṃ pūrvameva pratiśrutam ॥1-225-1॥
[युष्माकं (yuṣmākam) - of you; परिरक्षार्थं (parirakṣārtham) - for the purpose of protection; विज्ञप्तः (vijñaptaḥ) - informed; ज्वलनः (jvalanaḥ) - the Fire; मया (mayā) - by me; अग्निना (agninā) - by Agni; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - so; एवम् (evam) - in this way; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रतिश्रुतम् (pratiśrutam) - promised;]
(For your protection, the Fire was informed by me. And by Agni, thus, so, in this way, indeed, it was promised before.)
For your protection, I informed the Fire. Agni too, in this way, had already promised so before. (1-225-1)
अग्नेर्वचनमाज्ञाय मातुर्धर्मज्ञतां च वः। युष्माकं च परं वीर्यं नाहं पूर्वमिहागतः ॥१-२२५-२॥
agner vacanam ājñāya mātur dharmajñatāṃ ca vaḥ। yuṣmākaṃ ca paraṃ vīryaṃ nāhaṃ pūrvam ihāgataḥ ॥1-225-2॥
[अग्नेः (agner) - of Agni; (the fire god) वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; statement; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; having known; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of the mother; धर्मज्ञताम् (dharmajñatām) - righteousness-knowing; knowledge of dharma; च (ca) - and; वः (vaḥ) - your; (of you all) युष्माकम् (yuṣmākam) - your; च (ca) - and; परम् (param) - supreme; highest; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - strength; heroism; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; previously; इह (iha) - here; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have come; arrived;]
(Having understood the speech of Agni and your mother's knowledge of dharma, and your supreme strength, I had not come here before.)
Having heard Agni's words, your mother's righteousness, and your great strength, I had not come here before. (1-225-2)
न सन्तापो हि वः कार्यः पुत्रका मरणं प्रति। ऋषीन्वेद हुताशोऽपि ब्रह्म तद्विदितं च वः ॥१-२२५-३॥
na santāpo hi vaḥ kāryaḥ putrakā maraṇaṃ prati। ṛṣīn veda hutāśo'pi brahma tadviditaṃ ca vaḥ ॥1-225-3॥
[न (na) - not; सन्तापः (santāpaḥ) - affliction; हि (hi) - indeed; वः (vaḥ) - for you; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - to be done; पुत्रकाः (putrakāḥ) - O sons; मरणम् (maraṇam) - death; प्रति (prati) - regarding; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - the sages; वेद (veda) - knows; हुताशः (hutāśaḥ) - Agni; अपि (api) - also; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; तद्विदितम् (tadviditam) - that which is known; च (ca) - and; वः (vaḥ) - by you;]
(Not affliction indeed for you is to be done, O sons, regarding death. The sages, Agni also, knows Brahman, that which is known and by you.)
O sons, you should not grieve regarding death. The sages and even Agni know Brahman, and that knowledge is also yours. (1-225-3)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

एवमाश्वास्य पुत्रान्स भार्यां चादाय भारत। मन्दपालस्ततो देशादन्यं देशं जगाम ह ॥१-२२५-४॥
evam āśvāsya putrān sa bhāryāṃ ca ādāya bhārata। mandapālas tato deśāt anyaṃ deśaṃ jagāma ha ॥1-225-4॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; आश्वास्य (āśvāsya) - having consoled; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; सः (saḥ) - he; भार्यां (bhāryām) - wife; च (ca) - and; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; मन्दपालः (mandapālaḥ) - Mandapala; ततः (tataḥ) - then; देशात् (deśāt) - from the country; अन्यं (anyaṃ) - another; देशं (deśaṃ) - country; जगाम (jagāma) - went; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Thus, having consoled his sons, he, having taken his wife, O Bhārata, Mandapala then went from that country to another country indeed.)
Thus, O Bhārata, after consoling his sons and taking his wife, Mandapala then left that land and went to another country. (1-225-4)
भगवानपि तिग्मांशुः समिद्धं खाण्डवं वनम्। ददाह सह कृष्णाभ्यां जनयञ्जगतोऽभयम् ॥१-२२५-५॥
bhagavān api tigmāṃśuḥ samiddhaṃ khāṇḍavaṃ vanam। dadāha saha kṛṣṇābhyāṃ janayan jagato'bhayam ॥1-225-5॥
[भगवान् (bhagavān) - the divine one; अपि (api) - also; तिग्मांशुः (tigmāṃśuḥ) - the sharp-rayed (Sun); समिद्धम् (samiddham) - kindled; खाण्डवम् (khāṇḍavam) - Khandava; वनम् (vanam) - forest; ददाह (dadāha) - burned; सह (saha) - together with; कृष्णाभ्याम् (kṛṣṇābhyām) - with the two Krishnas; जनयन् (janayan) - generating; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; अभयम् (abhayam) - fearlessness;]
(The divine one also, the sharp-rayed (Sun), kindled the Khandava forest, burned (it) together with the two Krishnas, generating fearlessness for the world.)
The Sun god, along with the two Krishnas, set the Khandava forest ablaze, thereby granting fearlessness to the world. (1-225-5)
वसामेदोवहाः कुल्यास्तत्र पीत्वा च पावकः। अगच्छत्परमां तृप्तिं दर्शयामास चार्जुनम् ॥१-२२५-६॥
vasāmedovahāḥ kulyās tatra pītvā ca pāvakaḥ। agacchat paramāṃ tṛptiṃ darśayāmāsa cārjunam ॥1-225-6॥
[वसा (vasā) - fat; मेदोवहाः (medovahāḥ) - carrying fat; कुल्याः (kulyāḥ) - channels; तत्र (tatra) - there; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; च (ca) - and; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - Agni; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - went; परमां (paramām) - supreme; तृप्तिं (tṛptiṃ) - satisfaction; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; च (ca) - and; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - to Arjuna;]
(Fat-carrying channels there having drunk and Agni went to supreme satisfaction and showed to Arjuna.)
Having drunk from the fat-carrying channels there, Agni attained supreme satisfaction and showed it to Arjuna. (1-225-6)
ततोऽन्तरिक्षाद्भगवानवतीर्य सुरेश्वरः। मरुद्गणवृतः पार्थं माधवं चाब्रवीदिदम् ॥१-२२५-७॥
tato'ntarikṣādbhagavānavatīrya sureśvaraḥ। marudgaṇavṛtaḥ pārthaṃ mādhavaṃ cābravīdidam ॥1-225-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अन्तरिक्षात् (antarikṣāt) - from the sky; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - having descended; सुरेश्वरः (sureśvaraḥ) - the lord of the gods; मरुद्गणवृतः (marudgaṇavṛtaḥ) - attended by the hosts of Maruts; पार्थम् (pārtham) - to Pārtha (Arjuna); माधवम् (mādhavam) - to Mādhava (Krishna); च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(Then, from the sky, the revered one, having descended, the lord of the gods, attended by the hosts of Maruts, to Pārtha and Mādhava, said this.)
Then the lord of the gods, attended by the Maruts, descended from the sky and spoke these words to Pārtha and Mādhava. (1-225-7)
कृतं युवाभ्यां कर्मेदममरैरपि दुष्करम्। वरान्वृणीतं तुष्टोऽस्मि दुर्लभानप्यमानुषान् ॥१-२२५-८॥
kṛtaṃ yuvābhyāṃ karmedam amarair api duṣkaram। varān vṛṇītaṃ tuṣṭo'smi durlabhān api amānuṣān ॥1-225-8॥
[कृतं (kṛtam) - done; accomplished; युवाभ्यां (yuvābhyām) - by you two; कर्म (karma) - act; deed; इदम् (idam) - this; अमरैः (amaraiḥ) - by immortals; by gods; अपि (api) - even; दुष्करम् (duṣkaram) - difficult to do; वरान् (varān) - boons; वृणीतं (vṛṇītaṃ) - choose; select; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; दुर्लभान् (durlabhān) - difficult to obtain; अपि (api) - even; अमानुषान् (amānuṣān) - not human; superhuman;]
(This act, which is difficult even for the immortals, has been accomplished by you two. Choose boons, I am pleased, even those that are difficult to obtain and not human.)
You two have accomplished a deed that even the gods find difficult. I am pleased—choose your boons, even those rare and beyond human reach. (1-225-8)
पार्थस्तु वरयामास शक्रादस्त्राणि सर्वशः। ग्रहीतुं तच्च शक्रोऽस्य तदा कालं चकार ह ॥१-२२५-९॥
pārthas tu varayām āsa śakrād astrāṇi sarvaśaḥ। grahītuṃ tac ca śakro'sya tadā kālaṃ cakāra ha ॥1-225-9॥
[पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - son of Pṛthā; Arjuna; तु (tu) - but; वरयाम् (varayām) - to choose; to request; आस (āsa) - he did; शक्रात् (śakrāt) - from Śakra; from Indra; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; missiles; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; all; ग्रहीतुं (grahītuṃ) - to receive; to take; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra; Indra; अस्य (asya) - for him; his; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; कालम् (kālam) - time; period; चकार (cakāra) - made; fixed; ह (ha) - indeed; surely;]
(But Pārtha (Arjuna) requested all the weapons from Śakra (Indra); and Śakra then fixed the time for him to receive them indeed. "1-225-9")
But Arjuna requested all the weapons from Indra; and Indra then set the time for him to receive them. (1-225-9)
यदा प्रसन्नो भगवान्महादेवो भविष्यति। तुभ्यं तदा प्रदास्यामि पाण्डवास्त्राणि सर्वशः ॥१-२२५-१०॥
yadā prasanno bhagavān mahādevo bhaviṣyati। tubhyaṃ tadā pradāsyāmi pāṇḍavāstrāṇi sarvaśaḥ ॥1-225-10॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; प्रसन्नः (prasannaḥ) - pleased; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - Mahadeva; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; तुभ्यम् (tubhyam) - to you; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रदास्यामि (pradāsyāmi) - I will give; पाण्डवास्त्राणि (pāṇḍavāstrāṇi) - the weapons of the Pāṇḍavas; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely;]
(When the Lord Mahadeva will be pleased, then I will give to you the weapons of the Pāṇḍavas entirely.)
When Lord Mahadeva is pleased, I will then give you all the weapons of the Pāṇḍavas. (1-225-10)
अहमेव च तं कालं वेत्स्यामि कुरुनन्दन। तपसा महता चापि दास्यामि तव तान्यहम् ॥१-२२५-११॥
ahameva ca taṃ kālaṃ vetsyāmi kurunandana। tapasā mahatā cāpi dāsyāmi tava tānyaham ॥1-225-11॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; तं (tam) - that; कालं (kālam) - time; वेत्स्यामि (vetsyāmi) - shall know; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; महता (mahatā) - great; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I shall give; तव (tava) - to you; तानि (tāni) - those; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(I indeed and that time shall know, O delight of the Kurus; by great austerity and also I shall give those to you, I. (1-225-11))
O Kurunandana, I alone shall know that time, and by great austerity I shall also give those to you. (1-225-11)
आग्नेयानि च सर्वाणि वायव्यानि तथैव च। मदीयानि च सर्वाणि ग्रहीष्यसि धनञ्जय ॥१-२२५-१२॥
āgneyāni ca sarvāṇi vāyavyāni tathaiva ca। madīyāni ca sarvāṇi grahīṣyasi dhanañjaya ॥1-225-12॥
[आग्नेयानि (āgneyāni) - belonging to Agni; च (ca) - and; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; वायव्यानि (vāyavyāni) - belonging to Vāyu; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; मदीयानि (madīyāni) - belonging to me; च (ca) - and; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; ग्रहीष्यसि (grahīṣyasi) - you will take; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhananjaya;]
(Belonging to Agni and all, belonging to Vāyu likewise and, belonging to me and all, you will take, O Dhananjaya.)
O Dhananjaya, you will take all the weapons belonging to Agni, all those belonging to Vāyu, and all those belonging to me as well. (1-225-12)
वासुदेवोऽपि जग्राह प्रीतिं पार्थेन शाश्वतीम्। ददौ च तस्मै देवेन्द्रस्तं वरं प्रीतिमांस्तदा ॥१-२२५-१३॥
vāsudevo'pi jagrāha prītiṃ pārthena śāśvatīm। dadau ca tasmai devendras taṃ varaṃ prītimāṃs tadā ॥1-225-13॥
[वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; (son of Vasudeva, i.e., Kṛṣṇa); अपि (api) - also; indeed; जग्राह (jagrāha) - accepted; took; प्रीतिम् (prītiṃ) - affection; love; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Pārtha; (Arjuna, son of Pṛthā); शाश्वतीम् (śāśvatīm) - eternal; perpetual; ददौ (dadau) - gave; च (ca) - and; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; देवेन्द्रः (devendraḥ) - Indra; lord of the gods; तम् (tam) - that; वरम् (varam) - boon; blessing; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - affectionate; full of love; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time;]
(Vāsudeva also accepted the eternal affection from Pārtha. And at that time, Indra, full of affection, gave that boon to him.)
Vāsudeva also accepted the everlasting affection from Pārtha. Then, Indra, filled with love, granted that boon to him. (1-225-13)
दत्त्वा ताभ्यां वरं प्रीतः सह देवैर्मरुत्पतिः। हुताशनमनुज्ञाप्य जगाम त्रिदिवं पुनः ॥१-२२५-१४॥
dattvā tābhyāṃ varaṃ prītaḥ saha devair marutpatiḥ। hutāśanam anujñāpya jagāma tridivaṃ punaḥ ॥1-225-14॥
[दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; (from dā, to give; absolutive) ताभ्यां (tābhyām) - to those two; (instrumental dual of sā, she) वरं (varaṃ) - a boon; (accusative singular of vara, boon) प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; (past participle of prī, to please) सह (saha) - together with; (indeclinable) देवैः (devaiḥ) - with the gods; (instrumental plural of deva, god) मरुत्पतिः (marutpatiḥ) - the lord of the Maruts; (marut-pati, lord of the Maruts, i.e., Indra) हुताशनम् (hutāśanam) - Agni; (fire, literally 'eater of oblations') अनुज्ञाप्य (anujñāpya) - having permitted; (absolutive of anujñā, to permit) जगाम (jagāma) - went; (3rd person singular perfect of gam, to go) त्रिदिवं (tridivaṃ) - to heaven; (accusative singular of tridiva, heaven) पुनः (punaḥ) - again; (indeclinable);]
(Having given a boon to those two, pleased, together with the gods, the lord of the Maruts, having permitted Agni, went to heaven again.)
Pleased after granting a boon to the two, the lord of the Maruts, along with the gods, permitted Agni and then returned to heaven. (1-225-14)
पावकश्चापि तं दावं दग्ध्वा समृगपक्षिणम्। अहानि पञ्च चैकं च विरराम सुतर्पितः ॥१-२२५-१५॥
pāvakaś cāpi taṃ dāvaṃ dagdhvā samṛgapakṣiṇam। ahāni pañca caikaṃ ca virarāma sutarpitaḥ ॥1-225-15॥
[पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - fire; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तं (taṃ) - that; दावम् (dāvaṃ) - forest-fire; दग्ध्वा (dagdhvā) - having burned; समृगपक्षिणम् (samṛgapakṣiṇam) - with beasts and birds; अहानि (ahāni) - days; पञ्च (pañca) - five; च (ca) - and; एकं (ekaṃ) - one; च (ca) - and; विरराम (virarāma) - ceased; सुतर्पितः (sutarpitaḥ) - well-satisfied;]
(Fire also, having burned that forest-fire with beasts and birds, for five days and one (more), ceased, well-satisfied.)
The fire, having consumed that forest along with its beasts and birds, continued for five days and one more, and then, being fully satisfied, it ceased. (1-225-15)
जग्ध्वा मांसानि पीत्वा च मेदांसि रुधिराणि च। युक्तः परमया प्रीत्या तावुवाच विशां पते ॥१-२२५-१६॥
jagdhvā māṃsāni pītvā ca medāṃsi rudhirāṇi ca। yuktaḥ paramayā prītyā tāvuvāca viśāṃ pate ॥1-225-16॥
[जग्ध्वा (jagdhvā) - having eaten; मांसानि (māṃsāni) - flesh (plural); पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; च (ca) - and; मेदांसि (medāṃsi) - fats; रुधिराणि (rudhirāṇi) - blood (plural); च (ca) - and; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged; परमया (paramayā) - with supreme; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - delight; तौ (tau) - to them; उवाच (uvāca) - said; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord;]
(Having eaten flesh, having drunk fats and blood, and being engaged with supreme delight, he said to them, O lord of men.)
After eating the flesh and drinking the fats and blood, and being filled with supreme delight, he spoke to them, O lord of men. (1-225-16)
युवाभ्यां पुरुषाग्र्याभ्यां तर्पितोऽस्मि यथासुखम्। अनुजानामि वां वीरौ चरतं यत्र वाञ्छितम् ॥१-२२५-१७॥
yuvābhyāṃ puruṣāgryābhyāṃ tarpito'smi yathāsukham| anujānāmi vāṃ vīrau carataṃ yatra vāñchitam ॥1-225-17॥
[युवाभ्यां (yuvābhyām) - by you two youths; पुरुषाग्र्याभ्यां (puruṣāgryābhyām) - by you two foremost men; तर्पितः (tarpitaḥ) - satisfied; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; यथा (yathā) - as; सुखम् (sukham) - pleasure; अनुजानामि (anujānāmi) - I permit; वाम् (vām) - you two; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; चरतम् (caratam) - to go; यत्र (yatra) - where; वाञ्छितम् (vāñchitam) - desired;]
(By you two youths, by you two foremost men, I am satisfied as (is) pleasure. I permit you two heroes to go where (it is) desired.)
I am satisfied by you two noble youths, the foremost of men, as much as one could wish. I permit you, O heroes, to go wherever you desire. (1-225-17)
एवं तौ समनुज्ञातौ पावकेन महात्मना। अर्जुनो वासुदेवश्च दानवश्च मयस्तथा ॥१-२२५-१८॥
evaṃ tau samanujñātau pāvakena mahātmanā। arjuno vāsudevaś ca dānavaś ca mayas tathā ॥1-225-18॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; तौ (tau) - those two; समनुज्ञातौ (samanujñātau) - having been permitted; पावकेन (pāvakena) - by Pāvaka (Agni, the Fire-god); महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa); च (ca) - and; दानवः (dānavaḥ) - the Dānava (demon); च (ca) - and; मयः (mayaḥ) - Maya; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Thus, those two, having been permitted by Pāvaka, the great-souled one, Arjuna and Vāsudeva and the Dānava Maya also.)
Thus, having received permission from Pāvaka, the great-souled one, Arjuna, Vāsudeva, and the Dānava Maya also (departed). (1-225-18)
परिक्रम्य ततः सर्वे त्रयोऽपि भरतर्षभ। रमणीये नदीकूले सहिताः समुपाविशन् ॥१-२२५-१९॥
parikramya tataḥ sarve trayo'pi bharatarṣabha। ramaṇīye nadīkūle sahitāḥ samupāviśan ॥1-225-19॥
[परिक्रम्य (parikramya) - having circumambulated; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - the three; अपि (api) - also; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; रमणीये (ramaṇīye) - in the delightful; नदीकूले (nadīkūle) - on the riverbank; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; समुपाविशन् (samupāviśan) - sat down;]
(Having circumambulated, then all three also, O best of the Bharatas, together sat down on the delightful riverbank.)
O best of the Bharatas, after circumambulating, all three of them together sat down on the beautiful riverbank. (1-225-19)
