Pancharatra: Krishna asks Maya to build a palace for Arjuna.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततोऽब्रवीन्मयः पार्थं वासुदेवस्य संनिधौ। प्राञ्जलिः श्लक्ष्णया वाचा पूजयित्वा पुनः पुनः ॥२-१-१॥
tato'bravīn mayaḥ pārthaṃ vāsudevasya saṃnidhau। prāñjaliḥ ślakṣṇayā vācā pūjayitvā punaḥ punaḥ ॥2-1-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; मयः (mayaḥ) - Maya (the architect); पार्थम् (pārtham) - to Pārtha (Arjuna); वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa); संनिधौ (saṃnidhau) - in the presence; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with folded hands; श्लक्ष्णया (ślakṣṇayā) - with gentle; वाचा (vācā) - speech; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having honored; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Then Maya spoke to Pārtha in the presence of Vāsudeva, with folded hands, with gentle speech, having honored (him) again and again.)
Then Maya, with folded hands and gentle words, repeatedly honored and addressed Pārtha (Arjuna) in the presence of Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa). (2-1-1)
अस्माच्च कृष्णात्सङ्क्रुद्धात्पावकाच्च दिधक्षतः। त्वया त्रातोऽस्मि कौन्तेय ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते ॥२-१-२॥
asmācca kṛṣṇāt saṅkruddhāt pāvakācca didhakṣataḥ। tvayā trāto'smi kaunteya brūhi kiṃ karavāṇi te ॥2-1-2॥
[अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; च (ca) - and; कृष्णात् (kṛṣṇāt) - from Kṛṣṇa; सङ्क्रुद्धात् (saṅkruddhāt) - from the enraged; पावकात् (pāvakāt) - from fire; च (ca) - and; दिधक्षतः (didhakṣataḥ) - desiring to burn; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; त्रातः (trātaḥ) - protected; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kuntī; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; किम् (kim) - what; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - shall I do; ते (te) - for you;]
(From this and from Kṛṣṇa, from the enraged, from fire and from the one desiring to burn, by you I am protected, O son of Kuntī, tell (me) what shall I do for you.)
O son of Kuntī, I have been protected by you from this, from Kṛṣṇa, from the enraged, from fire, and from the one desiring to burn me. Tell me, what shall I do for you? (2-1-2)

कृतमेव त्वया सर्वं स्वस्ति गच्छ महासुर। प्रीतिमान्भव मे नित्यं प्रीतिमन्तो वयं च ते ॥२-१-३॥
kṛtameva tvayā sarvaṃ svasti gaccha mahāsura। prītimānbhava me nityaṃ prītimanto vayaṃ ca te ॥2-1-3॥
[कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; accomplished; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; everything; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; auspiciousness; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; महासुर (mahāsura) - O great asura; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - possessed of affection; pleased; भव (bhava) - be; मे (me) - my; to me; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; प्रीतिमन्तः (prītimantaḥ) - affectionate; full of affection; वयं (vayaṃ) - we; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; for you;]
(Indeed, all has been done by you; go in well-being, O great asura. Be possessed of affection for me always; we also are affectionate towards you.)
Everything has truly been accomplished by you; go in peace, O great asura. Always remain affectionate towards me, and we too are always affectionate towards you. (2-1-3)
मय उवाच॥

युक्तमेतत्त्वयि विभो यथात्थ पुरुषर्षभ। प्रीतिपूर्वमहं किञ्चित्कर्तुमिच्छामि भारत ॥२-१-४॥
yuktam etat tvayi vibho yathāttha puruṣarṣabha। prītipūrvam ahaṃ kiñcit kartum icchāmi bhārata ॥2-1-4॥
[युक्तम् (yuktam) - proper; एतत् (etat) - this; त्वयि (tvayi) - by you; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one; यथा (yathā) - as; अथ (atha) - indeed; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men; प्रीति-पूर्वम् (prīti-pūrvam) - with affection; अहम् (aham) - I; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - a little; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - wish; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Proper this by you, O mighty one, as indeed (you) said, O best of men; with affection I a little to do wish, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, as you have rightly said, O mighty one, O best of men, I wish to do a little (service) with affection. (2-1-4)
अहं हि विश्वकर्मा वै दानवानां महाकविः। सोऽहं वै त्वत्कृते किञ्चित्कर्तुमिच्छामि पाण्डव ॥२-१-५॥
ahaṃ hi viśvakarmā vai dānavānāṃ mahākaviḥ। so'haṃ vai tvatkṛte kiñcitkartumicchāmi pāṇḍava ॥2-1-5॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; विश्वकर्मा (viśvakarmā) - Viśvakarmā (the divine architect); वै (vai) - truly; दानवानाम् (dānavānām) - of the Dānavas (demons); महाकविः (mahākaviḥ) - great poet (wise creator); सः (saḥ) - he; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; वै (vai) - truly; त्वत्कृते (tvatkṛte) - for your sake; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava;]
(I indeed am Viśvakarmā, truly the great poet of the Dānavas; that very I, truly, for your sake, wish to do something, O Pāṇḍava.)
I am indeed Viśvakarmā, the great poet of the Dānavas; I, that very one, truly wish to do something for your sake, O Pāṇḍava. (2-1-5)
अर्जुन उवाच॥

प्राणकृच्छ्राद्विमुक्तं त्वमात्मानं मन्यसे मया। एवं गते न शक्ष्यामि किञ्चित्कारयितुं त्वया ॥२-१-६॥
prāṇakṛcchrād vimuktaṃ tvam ātmānaṃ manyase mayā। evaṃ gate na śakṣyāmi kiñcit kārayituṃ tvayā ॥2-1-6॥
[प्राणकृच्छ्रात् (prāṇakṛcchrāt) - from severe affliction of breath; विमुक्तम् (vimuktam) - released; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - yourself; मन्यसे (manyase) - think; मया (mayā) - by me; एवम् (evam) - thus; गते (gate) - having happened; न (na) - not; शक्ष्यामि (śakṣyāmi) - I shall be able; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; कारयितुम् (kārayitum) - to cause to be done; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(From severe affliction of breath released, you yourself think by me. Thus having happened, not I shall be able anything to cause to be done by you.)
You think that you have been released from severe affliction of breath by me. But now, in this situation, I shall not be able to get anything done by you. (2-1-6)
न चापि तव सङ्कल्पं मोघमिच्छामि दानव। कृष्णस्य क्रियतां किञ्चित्तथा प्रतिकृतं मयि ॥२-१-७॥
na cāpi tava saṅkalpaṃ mogham icchāmi dānava. kṛṣṇasya kriyatāṃ kiñcit tathā pratikṛtaṃ mayi ॥2-1-7॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तव (tava) - your; सङ्कल्पं (saṅkalpam) - resolve; मोग्हम् (mogham) - vain; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; दानव (dānava) - O demon; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Kṛṣṇa; क्रियतां (kriyatām) - let it be done; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; तथा (tathā) - thus; प्रतिकृतं (pratikṛtam) - reciprocated; मयि (mayi) - by me;]
(Not and also your resolve vain I wish, O demon. Of Kṛṣṇa let something thus reciprocated by me be done.)
O demon, I do not wish your resolve to be in vain. Let something be done for Kṛṣṇa in such a way that it is reciprocated by me. (2-1-7)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

चोदितो वासुदेवस्तु मयेन भरतर्षभ। मुहूर्तमिव संदध्यौ किमयं चोद्यतामिति ॥२-१-८॥
codito vāsudevastu mayena bharatarṣabha। muhūrtamiva sandadhyau kimayaṃ codyatāmiti ॥2-1-8॥
[चोदितः (coditaḥ) - urged; prompted; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; Kṛṣṇa; तु (tu) - but; however; मयेन (mayena) - by me; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; इव (iva) - as if; like; संदध्यौ (sandadhyau) - pondered; reflected; किम् (kim) - what; अयम् (ayam) - this; चोद्यता (codyatām) - should be urged; should be prompted; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Urged Vāsudeva but by me, O bull among the Bharatas, for a moment as if pondered: 'What should this be urged?' thus.)
But Vāsudeva, having been urged by me, O best of the Bharatas, pondered for a moment as if thinking, 'What should this be urged?' (2-1-8)
चोदयामास तं कृष्णः सभा वै क्रियतामिति। धर्मराजस्य दैतेय यादृशीमिह मन्यसे ॥२-१-९॥
codayāmāsa taṃ kṛṣṇaḥ sabhā vai kriyatāmiti. dharmarājasya daiteya yādṛśīm iha manyase ॥2-1-9॥
[चोदयामास (codayāmāsa) - urged; set in motion; तं (taṃ) - him; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; सभा (sabhā) - assembly; hall; वै (vai) - indeed; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be made; इति (iti) - thus; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja; दैतेय (daiteya) - O son of Diti; यादृशीम् (yādṛśīm) - such as; इह (iha) - here; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think;]
(Kṛṣṇa urged him: "Let the assembly indeed be made thus." O son of Diti, such as you think here, of Dharmarāja.)
Kṛṣṇa urged him, saying, "Let the assembly be constructed as you think fit here, O son of Diti, for Dharmarāja." (2-1-9)
यां कृतां नानुकुर्युस्ते मानवाः प्रेक्ष्य विस्मिताः। मनुष्यलोके कृत्स्नेऽस्मिंस्तादृशीं कुरु वै सभाम् ॥२-१-१०॥
yāṃ kṛtāṃ nānukuryus te mānavāḥ prekṣya vismitāḥ। manuṣyaloke kṛtsne'smiṃs tādṛśīṃ kuru vai sabhām ॥2-1-10॥
[याम् (yām) - which; (accusative singular feminine) कृताम् (kṛtām) - made; accomplished; न (na) - not; अनुकुर्युः (anukuryuḥ) - would imitate; (optative plural) ते (te) - those; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - men; humans; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; विस्मिताः (vismitāḥ) - astonished; amazed; मनुष्यलोके (manuṣyaloke) - in the world of men; कृत्स्ने (kṛtsne) - entire; whole; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; तादृशीम् (tādṛśīm) - such; of that kind; कुरु (kuru) - make; do; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; hall;]
(Make indeed such an assembly in this entire world of men, which, having seen, those men would not imitate, being astonished.)
Create such an assembly here in the whole world of men that, upon seeing it, people will be so astonished that they will not attempt to imitate it. (2-1-10)
यत्र दिव्यानभिप्रायान्पश्येम विहितांस्त्वया। आसुरान्मानुषांश्चैव तां सभां कुरु वै मय ॥२-१-११॥
yatra divyānabhiprāyān paśyema vihitāṁs tvayā | āsurān mānuṣāṁś caiva tāṁ sabhāṁ kuru vai maya ॥2-1-11॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; दिव्यानभिप्रायान् (divyānabhiprāyān) - divine-intentioned (those with divine intentions); पश्येम (paśyema) - we may see; विहितान् (vihitān) - appointed; ordained; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; आसुरान् (āsurān) - demonic (those with asuric nature); मानुषान् (mānuṣān) - human beings; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ताम् (tām) - that; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; कुरु (kuru) - O Kuru (descendant of Kuru); वै (vai) - indeed; मय (maya) - by me;]
(Where those with divine intentions, appointed by you, and demonic and human beings indeed, that assembly, O Kuru, indeed, by me, we may see.)
O Kuru, establish that assembly where, by your arrangement, we may see those with divine intentions as well as demonic and human beings. (2-1-11)
प्रतिगृह्य तु तद्वाक्यं सम्प्रहृष्टो मयस्तदा। विमानप्रतिमां चक्रे पाण्डवस्य सभां मुदा ॥२-१-१२॥
pratigṛhya tu tadvākyaṃ samprahṛṣṭo mayastadā। vimānapratimāṃ cakre pāṇḍavasya sabhāṃ mudā ॥2-1-12॥
[प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having accepted; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - speech; सम्प्रहृष्टः (samprahṛṣṭaḥ) - delighted; मयः (mayaḥ) - Maya (the asura architect); तदा (tadā) - then; विमानप्रतिमाम् (vimānapratimām) - palace-like (structure); चक्रे (cakre) - made; पाण्डवस्य (pāṇḍavasya) - of the Pāṇḍava; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly hall; मुदा (mudā) - with joy;]
(Having accepted that speech, but delighted, Maya then made a palace-like assembly hall of the Pāṇḍava with joy.)
Maya, delighted after accepting those words, then joyfully constructed a palace-like assembly hall for the Pāṇḍava. (2-1-12)
ततः कृष्णश्च पार्थश्च धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे। सर्वमेतद्यथावेद्य दर्शयामासतुर्मयम् ॥२-१-१३॥
tataḥ kṛṣṇaś ca pārthaś ca dharmarāje yudhiṣṭhire। sarvam etad yathā vedya darśayāmāsatur mayam ॥2-1-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; च (ca) - and; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; च (ca) - and; धर्मराजे (dharmarāje) - to Dharmarāja; युधिष्ठिरे (yudhiṣṭhire) - Yudhiṣṭhira; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; यथा (yathā) - as; वेद्य (vedya) - to be known; दर्शयामासतु (darśayāmāsatu) - showed; र्मयम् (mayam) - by us;]
(Then Kṛṣṇa and Pārtha, to Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira, all this as to be known, showed by us.)
Then Kṛṣṇa and Pārtha showed all this, as it is to be known, to Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira. (2-1-13)
तस्मै युधिष्ठिरः पूजां यथार्हमकरोत्तदा। स तु तां प्रतिजग्राह मयः सत्कृत्य सत्कृतः ॥२-१-१४॥
tasmai yudhiṣṭhiraḥ pūjāṃ yathārhamakarottadā। sa tu tāṃ pratijagrāha mayaḥ satkṛtya satkṛtaḥ ॥2-1-14॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; पूजां (pūjām) - honor; (worship; यथार्हम् (yathārham) - as was due; अकरोत् (akarot) - performed; तदा (tadā) - then; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; तां (tāṃ) - that (honor); प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - accepted; मयः (mayaḥ) - Maya; सत्कृत्य (satkṛtya) - having honored; सत्कृतः (satkṛtaḥ) - being honored;]
(To him, Yudhishthira performed honor as was due then. He, but, that (honor) accepted, Maya, having honored, being honored.)
Then Yudhishthira offered due honor to him. Maya, having been honored, accepted that honor with respect. (2-1-14)
स पूर्वदेवचरितं तत्र तत्र विशां पते। कथयामास दैतेयः पाण्डुपुत्रेषु भारत ॥२-१-१५॥
sa pūrvadevacaritaṃ tatra tatra viśāṃ pate| kathayāmāsa daiteyaḥ pāṇḍuputreṣu bhārata ||2-1-15||
[स (sa) - he; पूर्व (pūrva) - former; देव (deva) - god; चरितं (caritaṃ) - deed; तत्र (tatra) - there; तत्र (tatra) - there; विशां (viśām) - of kings; पते (pate) - O lord; कथयामास (kathayāmāsa) - narrated; दैतेयः (daiteyaḥ) - the son of Diti; पाण्डुपुत्रेषु (pāṇḍuputreṣu) - to the sons of Pāṇḍu; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(He narrated the former deeds of the gods here and there, O lord of kings, the son of Diti, to the sons of Pāṇḍu, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, the son of Diti narrated the ancient deeds of the gods in various places to the sons of Pāṇḍu, O lord of kings. (2-1-15)
स कालं कञ्चिदाश्वस्य विश्वकर्मा प्रचिन्त्य च। सभां प्रचक्रमे कर्तुं पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् ॥२-१-१६॥
sa kālaṃ kañcid āśvasya viśvakarmā pracintya ca। sabhāṃ pracakrame kartuṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ mahātmanām ॥2-1-16॥
[स (sa) - he; कालं (kālam) - time; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - some; आश्वस्य (āśvasya) - having regained composure; विश्वकर्मा (viśvakarmā) - Viśvakarmā; प्रचिन्त्य (pracintya) - having considered; च (ca) - and; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly hall; प्रचक्रमे (pracakrame) - he began; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to make; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled;]
(He, having regained composure for some time and having considered, Viśvakarmā began to make the assembly hall for the great-souled Pāṇḍavas.)
After regaining his composure for a while and reflecting, Viśvakarmā began constructing the assembly hall for the noble Pāṇḍavas. (2-1-16)
अभिप्रायेण पार्थानां कृष्णस्य च महात्मनः। पुण्येऽहनि महातेजाः कृतकौतुकमङ्गलः ॥२-१-१७॥
abhiprāyeṇa pārthānāṃ kṛṣṇasya ca mahātmanaḥ। puṇye'ahani mahātejāḥ kṛtakautukamaṅgalaḥ ॥2-1-17॥
[अभिप्रायेण (abhiprāyeṇa) - with intention; by purpose; पार्थानाम् (pārthānām) - of the sons of Pṛthā; of the Pāṇḍavas; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Kṛṣṇa; च (ca) - and; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; पुण्ये (puṇye) - on the auspicious; अहनि (ahani) - day; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - the one of great brilliance; कृत (kṛta) - having performed; कौतुक (kautuka) - festivity; auspicious rite; मङ्गलः (maṅgalaḥ) - auspicious act;]
(With the intention of the sons of Pṛthā and of the great-souled Kṛṣṇa, on the auspicious day, the one of great brilliance performed an auspicious festivity.)
With the intention of the Pāṇḍavas and the noble Kṛṣṇa, on an auspicious day, the radiant one performed a festive and auspicious ceremony. (2-1-17)
तर्पयित्वा द्विजश्रेष्ठान्पायसेन सहस्रशः। धनं बहुविधं दत्त्वा तेभ्य एव च वीर्यवान् ॥२-१-१८॥
tarpayitvā dvijaśreṣṭhānpāyasena sahasraśaḥ। dhanaṃ bahuvidhaṃ dattvā tebhya eva ca vīryavān ॥2-1-18॥
[तर्पयित्वा (tarpayitvā) - having satisfied; द्विजश्रेष्ठान् (dvijaśreṣṭhān) - the best of the twice-born; पायसेन (pāyasena) - with payasa (rice pudding); सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; धनं (dhanaṃ) - wealth; बहुविधं (bahuvidhaṃ) - of many kinds; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - to them; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - the powerful one;]
(Having satisfied the best of the twice-born with payasa by thousands, and having given wealth of many kinds to them indeed, the powerful one.)
The powerful one, having satisfied thousands of the best among the twice-born with payasa and given them various kinds of wealth, did so indeed. (2-1-18)
सर्वर्तुगुणसम्पन्नां दिव्यरूपां मनोरमाम्। दशकिष्कुसहस्रां तां मापयामास सर्वतः ॥२-१-१९॥
sarvartuguṇasampannāṃ divyarūpāṃ manoramām। daśakiṣkusahasrāṃ tāṃ māpayāmāsa sarvataḥ ॥2-1-19॥
[सर्वर्तु (sarvartu) - all seasons; गुण (guṇa) - qualities; सम्पन्नां (sampannām) - endowed with; दिव्य (divya) - divine; रूपां (rūpām) - form; मनोरमाम् (manoramām) - charming; दश (daśa) - ten; किष्कु (kiṣku) - yoke-lengths; सहस्रां (sahasrām) - thousand; तां (tām) - her; मापयामास (māpayāmāsa) - measured; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides;]
(Endowed with the qualities of all seasons, having a divine form, charming, ten thousand yoke-lengths, her, he measured on all sides.)
He measured her on all sides as being endowed with the qualities of all seasons, possessing a divine and charming form, and extending ten thousand yoke-lengths. (2-1-19)

ॐ असतो मा सद्गमय। तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय। मृत्योर्माऽमृतं गमय। ॐ शान्ति: शान्ति: शान्ति: ॥ - बृहदारण्यकोपनिषद् 1.3.28
