सम्पूज्याथाभ्यनुज्ञातो महर्षेर्वचनात्परम्। प्रत्युवाचानुपूर्व्येण धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥२-६-१॥
sampūjyāthābhyanujñāto maharṣervacanātparam। pratyuvācānupūrvyeṇa dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥2-6-1॥
[सम्पूज्य (sampūjya) - having duly honored; अथ (atha) - then; अभ्यनुज्ञातः (abhyanujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) - by the great sage; वचनात् (vacanāt) - after the words; परम् (param) - after; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; अनुपूर्व्येण (anupūrvyeṇa) - in due order; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - the king of dharma; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(Having duly honored and then having been permitted by the great sage after his words, in due order, the king of dharma, Yudhishthira, replied.)
After duly honoring and being permitted by the great sage, Yudhishthira, the king of dharma, replied in due order after the sage's words. (2-6-1)
भगवन्न्याय्यमाहैतं यथावद्धर्मनिश्चयम्। यथाशक्ति यथान्यायं क्रियतेऽयं विधिर्मया ॥२-६-२॥
bhagavannyāyyamāhaitaṃ yathāvat dharmaniścayam। yathāśakti yathānyāyaṃ kriyate'yaṃ vidhirmayā ॥2-6-2॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; न्याय्यम् (nyāyyam) - just; rightful; आह (āha) - said; एतं (etaṃ) - this; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; as it is; धर्मनिश्चयम् (dharma-niścayam) - determination of dharma; यथा-शक्ति (yathā-śakti) - according to ability; यथा-न्यायम् (yathā-nyāyam) - according to justice; क्रियते (kriyate) - is done; अयम् (ayam) - this; विधिः (vidhiḥ) - procedure; rule; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(O Lord, this just statement regarding the determination of dharma has been said as it is; this procedure is done by me according to ability and according to justice.)
O Lord, I have stated this just determination of dharma as it is; this procedure has been performed by me according to my ability and in accordance with justice. (2-6-2)
राजभिर्यद्यथा कार्यं पुरा तत्तन्न संशयः। यथान्यायोपनीतार्थं कृतं हेतुमदर्थवत् ॥२-६-३॥
rājabhir yadyathā kāryaṃ purā tat tan na saṃśayaḥ। yathā-nyāya-upanīta-arthaṃ kṛtaṃ hetumad arthavat ॥2-6-3॥
[राजभिः (rājabhiḥ) - by kings; यत् (yat) - whatever; यथा (yathā) - as; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; पुरा (purā) - formerly; तत् (tat) - that; तन् (tan) - that; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; यथा (yathā) - as; न्याय (nyāya) - justice; उपनीत (upanīta) - brought; अर्थं (arthaṃ) - matter; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; हेतुमत् (hetumat) - with reason; अर्थवत् (arthavat) - meaningful;]
(By kings, whatever action was formerly (done), that, that is not (to be) doubted; as (an action) done with reason and meaning, brought in accordance with justice.)
Whatever actions were performed by kings in the past should not be doubted, as they were done with reason and meaning, and in accordance with justice. (2-6-3)
वयं तु सत्पथं तेषां यातुमिच्छामहे प्रभो। न तु शक्यं तथा गन्तुं यथा तैर्नियतात्मभिः ॥२-६-४॥
vayaṃ tu satpathaṃ teṣāṃ yātumicchāmahe prabho। na tu śakyaṃ tathā gantuṃ yathā tairniyatātmabhiḥ ॥2-6-4॥
[वयम् (vayam) - we; तु (tu) - but; सत्पथम् (satpatham) - the righteous path; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; यातुम् (yātum) - to go; इच्छामहे (icchāmahe) - we desire; प्रभो (prabho) - O Lord; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; तथा (tathā) - in that way; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; यथा (yathā) - as; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; नियतात्मभिः (niyatātmabhiḥ) - by those of controlled self;]
(We but the righteous path of them to go we desire, O Lord; not but possible in that way to go as by them by those of controlled self. (2-6-4))
O Lord, we wish to follow the righteous path of those people, but it is not possible for us to proceed in the same way as those with controlled minds. (2-6-4)
एवमुक्त्वा स धर्मात्मा वाक्यं तदभिपूज्य च। मुहूर्तात्प्राप्तकालं च दृष्ट्वा लोकचरं मुनिम् ॥२-६-५॥
evam-uktvā sa dharmātmā vākyaṃ tad-abhipūjya ca | muhūrtāt-prāptakālaṃ ca dṛṣṭvā lokacaraṃ munim ॥2-6-5॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; सः (saḥ) - he; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - speech; तत् (tat) - that; अभिपूज्य (abhipūjya) - having duly honored; च (ca) - and; मुहूर्तात् (muhūrtāt) - after a moment; प्राप्तकालम् (prāptakālam) - when the proper time had arrived; च (ca) - and; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; लोकचरम् (lokacaram) - moving among people; मुनिम् (munim) - sage;]
(Thus having spoken, he, the righteous-souled, having duly honored that speech, and after a moment, having seen that the proper time had arrived, and the sage moving among people.)
Having thus spoken, the righteous-souled one, after duly honoring that speech and seeing that the proper time had arrived, beheld the sage who moves among people. (2-6-5)
नारदं स्वस्थमासीनमुपासीनो युधिष्ठिरः। अपृच्छत्पाण्डवस्तत्र राजमध्ये महामतिः ॥२-६-६॥
nāradaṃ svastham-āsīnam-upāsīno yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। apṛcchat-pāṇḍavas-tatra rājamadhye mahāmatiḥ ॥2-6-6॥
[नारदं (nāradaṃ) - Nārada; (the sage Nārada;) स्वस्थम् (svastham) - well; (in good health;) आसीनम् (āsīnam) - seated; (sitting;) उपासीनः (upāsīnaḥ) - approached; (having approached;) युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; (King Yudhiṣṭhira;) अपृच्छत् (apṛcchat) - asked; (inquired;) पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava; (son of Pāṇḍu;) तत्र (tatra) - there; (in that place;) राजमध्ये (rājamadhye) - in the midst of kings; (among the kings;) महामतिः (mahāmatiḥ) - great-minded; (of great wisdom;]
(Yudhiṣṭhira, having approached Nārada who was seated well, the great-minded Pāṇḍava asked there in the midst of kings.)
Yudhiṣṭhira, the wise son of Pāṇḍu, approached the well-seated sage Nārada and asked him in the assembly of kings. (2-6-6)
भवान्सञ्चरते लोकान्सदा नानाविधान्बहून्। ब्रह्मणा निर्मितान्पूर्वं प्रेक्षमाणो मनोजवः ॥२-६-७॥
bhavān sañcarate lokān sadā nānāvidhān bahūn। brahmaṇā nirmitān pūrvaṃ prekṣamāṇo manojavaḥ ॥2-6-7॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you; (honorific); सञ्चरते (sañcarate) - move about; wander; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; सदा (sadā) - always; नानाविधान् (nānāvidhān) - of various kinds; बहून् (bahūn) - many; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - by Brahmā; (the creator); निर्मितान् (nirmitān) - created; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - formerly; प्रेक्षमाणः (prekṣamāṇaḥ) - observing; seeing; मनोजवः (manojavaḥ) - swift as the mind;]
(You move about many worlds of various kinds always, observing those created formerly by Brahmā, swift as the mind.)
You always travel through many different worlds, observing those that were created long ago by Brahmā, moving with the speed of thought. (2-6-7)
ईदृशी भवता काचिद्दृष्टपूर्वा सभा क्वचित्। इतो वा श्रेयसी ब्रह्मंस्तन्ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः ॥२-६-८॥
īdṛśī bhavatā kācid dṛṣṭapūrvā sabhā kvacit। ito vā śreyasī brahmaṃs tan mamācakṣva pṛcchataḥ ॥2-6-8॥
[ईदृशी (īdṛśī) - such; of this kind; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; काचित् (kācit) - any; some; दृष्टपूर्वा (dṛṣṭapūrvā) - seen before; सभा (sabhā) - assembly; gathering; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; at any place; इतो (ito) - than this; from here; वा (vā) - or; श्रेयसी (śreyasī) - better; more excellent; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahmin; तत् (tat) - that; मम (mama) - to me; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; speak; पृच्छतः (pṛcchataḥ) - (of) asking; enquiring;]
(Such by you any seen before assembly anywhere? Than this or better, O Brahmin, that to me tell (of) asking.)
O Brahmin, have you ever seen any assembly like this anywhere before? Or is there any assembly better than this? If so, please tell me, as I am asking. (2-6-8)
तच्छ्रुत्वा नारदस्तस्य धर्मराजस्य भाषितम्। पाण्डवं प्रत्युवाचेदं स्मयन्मधुरया गिरा ॥२-६-९॥
tacchrutvā nāradas tasya dharmarājasya bhāṣitam। pāṇḍavaṃ pratyuvācedaṃ smayan madhurayā girā ॥2-6-9॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; तस्य (tasya) - his; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja; भाषितम् (bhāṣitam) - speech; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - to Pāṇḍava; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; इदम् (idam) - this; स्मयन् (smayan) - smiling; मधुरया (madhurayā) - with sweet; गिरा (girā) - speech;]
(That having heard, Nārada, to his, of Dharmarāja, speech, to Pāṇḍava, replied this, smiling, with sweet speech.)
Having heard that speech of Dharmarāja, Nārada, smiling, replied to Pāṇḍava with sweet words. (2-6-9)
मानुषेषु न मे तात दृष्टपूर्वा न च श्रुता। सभा मणिमयी राजन्यथेयं तव भारत ॥२-६-१०॥
mānuṣeṣu na me tāta dṛṣṭapūrvā na ca śrutā। sabhā maṇimayī rājanyatheyaṃ tava bhārata ॥2-6-10॥
[मानुषेषु (mānuṣeṣu) - among men; न (na) - not; मे (me) - by me; तात (tāta) - O dear one; दृष्टपूर्वा (dṛṣṭapūrvā) - seen before; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; श्रुता (śrutā) - heard; सभा (sabhā) - assembly; मणिमयी (maṇimayī) - made of jewels; राजन् (rājan) - O king; यथा (yathā) - like; इयम् (iyam) - this; तव (tava) - your; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; ॥२-६-१०॥ (॥2-6-10॥) -;]
(Among men, not by me, O dear one, seen before, nor heard; an assembly made of jewels, O king, like this, your, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, O king, I have neither seen nor heard among men an assembly made of jewels like this of yours. (2-6-10)
सभां तु पितृराजस्य वरुणस्य च धीमतः। कथयिष्ये तथेन्द्रस्य कैलासनिलयस्य च ॥२-६-११॥
sabhāṃ tu pitṛrājasya varuṇasya ca dhīmataḥ। kathayiṣye tatha indrasya kailāsa-nilayasya ca ॥2-6-11॥
[सभां (sabhām) - assembly; तु (tu) - but; पितृराजस्य (pitṛrājasya) - of the king of ancestors; वरुणस्य (varuṇasya) - of Varuṇa; च (ca) - and; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise; कथयिष्ये (kathayiṣye) - I shall describe; तथा (tathā) - also; इन्द्रस्य (indrasya) - of Indra; कैलासनिलयस्य (kailāsa-nilayasya) - of the Kailāsa-dwelling; च (ca) - and;]
(But the assembly of the king of ancestors, of Varuṇa, and of the wise, I shall describe; also of Indra and of the Kailāsa-dwelling; and.)
But I shall describe the assembly of the king of the ancestors, of Varuṇa, and of the wise; also that of Indra and of the one dwelling on Kailāsa. (2-6-11)
ब्रह्मणश्च सभां दिव्यां कथयिष्ये गतक्लमाम्। यदि ते श्रवणे बुद्धिर्वर्तते भरतर्षभ ॥२-६-१२॥
brahmaṇaś ca sabhāṃ divyāṃ kathayiṣye gataklamām। yadi te śravaṇe buddhir vartate bharatarṣabha ॥2-6-12॥
[ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahmā; च (ca) - and; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; दिव्याम् (divyām) - divine; कथयिष्ये (kathayiṣye) - I shall narrate; गतक्लमाम् (gataklamām) - free from fatigue; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - to you; श्रवणे (śravaṇe) - in hearing; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - mind; वर्तते (vartate) - remains; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(And I shall narrate the divine assembly of Brahmā, free from fatigue, if your mind remains in hearing, O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, if your mind is attentive to listening, I shall describe to you the divine assembly of Brahmā, which is free from fatigue. (2-6-12)
नारदेनैवमुक्तस्तु धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। प्राञ्जलिर्भ्रातृभिः सार्धं तैश्च सर्वैर्नृपैर्वृतः ॥२-६-१३॥
nāradenaivamuktastu dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। prāñjalirbhṛātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṃ taiśca sarvairnṛpairvṛtaḥ ॥2-6-13॥
[नारदेन (nāradena) - by Nārada; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; तु (tu) - but; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - the king of dharma; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) - together; तैः (taiḥ) - with them; च (ca) - and; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; नृपैः (nṛpaiḥ) - kings; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded;]
(But Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of dharma, addressed thus by Nārada, with joined palms, together with his brothers, and surrounded by all those kings.)
Thus addressed by Nārada, Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of dharma, with joined palms, together with his brothers and surrounded by all the kings, responded. (2-6-13)
नारदं प्रत्युवाचेदं धर्मराजो महामनाः। सभाः कथय ताः सर्वाः श्रोतुमिच्छामहे वयम् ॥२-६-१४॥
nāradaṃ pratyuvācedaṃ dharmarājo mahāmanāḥ। sabhāḥ kathaya tāḥ sarvāḥ śrotumicchāmahe vayam ॥2-6-14॥
[नारदं (nāradaṃ) - to Nārada; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; इदं (idaṃ) - this; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; सभाः (sabhāḥ) - assemblies; कथय (kathaya) - describe; ताः (tāḥ) - those; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामहे (icchāmahe) - we desire; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(Dharmarāja, great-minded, replied this to Nārada: "Describe all those assemblies; we desire to hear (of them).")
The great-minded Dharmarāja replied to Nārada, "Please describe all those assemblies; we wish to hear about them." (2-6-14)
किंद्रव्यास्ताः सभा ब्रह्मन्किंविस्ताराः किमायताः। पितामहं च के तस्यां सभायां पर्युपासते ॥२-६-१५॥
kiṁ dravyāstāḥ sabhā brahman kiṁ vistārāḥ kimāyatāḥ। pitāmahaṁ ca ke tasyāṁ sabhāyāṁ paryupāsate ॥2-6-15॥
[किम् (kim) - what; द्रव्याः (dravyāḥ) - substances; ताः (tāḥ) - those; सभा (sabhā) - assembly; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; किम् (kim) - what; विस्ताराः (vistārāḥ) - extent; किम् (kim) - what; आयताः (āyatāḥ) - dimensions; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - the grandsire; च (ca) - and; के (ke) - who; तस्याम् (tasyām) - in that; सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; पर्युपासते (paryupāsate) - attend upon;]
(What are the substances, those assemblies, O Brahman? What is the extent, what are the dimensions? The grandsire and who attend upon him in that assembly?)
O Brahman, what are the substances of those assemblies? What is their extent and what are their dimensions? Who, along with the grandsire, attend upon him in that assembly? (2-6-15)
वासवं देवराजं च यमं वैवस्वतं च के। वरुणं च कुबेरं च सभायां पर्युपासते ॥२-६-१६॥
vāsavaṃ devarājaṃ ca yamaṃ vaivasvataṃ ca ke। varuṇaṃ ca kuberaṃ ca sabhāyāṃ paryupāsate ॥2-6-16॥
[वासवं (vāsavam) - Indra; (from vāsava, son of Vasu; chief of gods;) देवराजं (devarājam) - king of gods; (deva + rājan;) च (ca) - and; यमं (yamam) - Yama; (god of death;) वैवस्वतं (vaivasvatam) - son of Vivasvat; (epithet of Yama;) च (ca) - and; के (ke) - who; (some;) वरुणं (varuṇam) - Varuṇa; (god of waters;) च (ca) - and; कुबेरं (kuberaṃ) - Kubera; (god of wealth;) च (ca) - and; सभायां (sabhāyāṃ) - in the assembly; (locative of sabhā;) पर्युपासते (paryupāsate) - attend upon; (they worship; they serve;);]
(Indra, the king of gods, and Yama, the son of Vivasvat, and who (others), Varuṇa and Kubera, and (others) attend upon (him) in the assembly.)

एतत्सर्वं यथातत्त्वं देवर्षे वदतस्तव। श्रोतुमिच्छाम सहिताः परं कौतूहलं हि नः ॥२-६-१७॥
etatsarvaṃ yathātattvaṃ devarṣe vadatastava। śrotumicchāma sahitāḥ paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi naḥ ॥2-6-17॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; यथा (yathā) - as; तत्त्वं (tattvam) - truth; देवर्षे (devarṣe) - O sage among the gods; वदतः (vadataḥ) - speaking; तव (tava) - your; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छाम (icchāma) - we wish; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; परं (param) - great; कौतूहलम् (kautūhalam) - curiosity; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - our;]
(This all as (it is in) truth, O sage among the gods, from your speaking, to hear we wish together; great curiosity indeed (is) ours.)
O sage among the gods, we all wish to hear from you the truth of all this, for we are all filled with great curiosity. (2-6-17)
एवमुक्तः पाण्डवेन नारदः प्रत्युवाच तम्। क्रमेण राजन्दिव्यास्ताः श्रूयन्तामिह नः सभाः ॥२-६-१८॥
evam-uktaḥ pāṇḍavena nāradaḥ pratyuvāca tam। krameṇa rājan divyāstāḥ śrūyantām iha naḥ sabhāḥ ॥2-6-18॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; पाण्डवेन (pāṇḍavena) - by the son of Pāṇḍu; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; तम् (tam) - to him; क्रमेण (krameṇa) - in order; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दिव्याः (divyāḥ) - divine; ताः (tāḥ) - those; श्रूयन्ताम् (śrūyantām) - let them be heard; इह (iha) - here; नः (naḥ) - by us; सभाः (sabhāḥ) - assemblies;]
(Thus having been spoken by the son of Pāṇḍu, Nārada replied to him. In order, O king, let those divine assemblies be heard here by us. (2-6-18))
When the son of Pāṇḍu had thus spoken, Nārada replied to him: 'O king, let us now hear, in order, about those divine assemblies here.' (2-6-18)
