Pancharatra: Description of the Self-creating Brahman’s assembly. How Harishchandra performed Rajasuya to get a place in that assembly.

पुरा देवयुगे राजन्नादित्यो भगवान्दिवः। आगच्छन्मानुषं लोकं दिदृक्षुर्विगतक्लमः ॥२-११-१॥
purā devayuge rājann ādityo bhagavān divaḥ। āgacchan mānuṣaṃ lokaṃ didṛkṣur vigataklamaḥ ॥2-11-1॥
[पुरा (purā) - formerly; देवयुगे (devayuge) - in the age of the gods; राजन् (rājan) - O king; आदित्यः (ādityaḥ) - the Sun (god); भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; दिवः (divaḥ) - from heaven; आगच्छन् (āgacchan) - coming; मानुषम् (mānuṣam) - human; लोकम् (lokam) - world; दिदृक्षुः (didṛkṣuḥ) - desiring to see; विगतक्लमः (vigataklamaḥ) - free from fatigue;]
(Formerly, in the age of the gods, O king, the revered Sun (god), coming from heaven, desiring to see the human world, free from fatigue.)
O king, once in the age of the gods, the revered Sun, free from fatigue, came down from heaven desiring to see the world of humans. (2-11-1)
चरन्मानुषरूपेण सभां दृष्ट्वा स्वयम्भुवः। सभामकथयन्मह्यं ब्राह्मीं तत्त्वेन पाण्डव ॥२-११-२॥
caran mānuṣarūpeṇa sabhāṃ dṛṣṭvā svayambhuvaḥ। sabhām akathayan mahyaṃ brāhmīṃ tattvena pāṇḍava ॥2-11-2॥
[चरन् (caran) - moving; going; मानुषरूपेण (mānuṣarūpeṇa) - with human form; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; hall; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; स्वयम्भुवः (svayambhuvaḥ) - Svayambhu (the self-born, i.e., Brahmā); सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; hall; अकथयत् (akathayat) - described; told; मह्यम् (mahyaṃ) - to me; ब्राह्मीम् (brāhmīm) - of Brahmā; divine; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - in essence; truly; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava;]
(Moving with human form, having seen the assembly, Svayambhu (Brahmā) described to me the divine assembly truly, O Pāṇḍava.)
O Pāṇḍava, Svayambhu (Brahmā), moving in human form, after seeing the assembly, truly described to me the divine assembly. (2-11-2)
अप्रमेयप्रभां दिव्यां मानसीं भरतर्षभ। अनिर्देश्यां प्रभावेन सर्वभूतमनोरमाम् ॥२-११-३॥
aprameyaprabhāṃ divyāṃ mānasīṃ bharatarṣabha। anirdeśyāṃ prabhāvena sarvabhūtamanoramām ॥2-11-3॥
[अप्रमेयप्रभां (aprameyaprabhām) - of immeasurable radiance; दिव्यां (divyām) - divine; मानसीं (mānasīm) - mental; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; अनिर्देश्यां (anirdeśyām) - indescribable; प्रभावेन (prabhāvena) - by power; सर्वभूतमनोरमाम् (sarvabhūtamanoramām) - pleasing to all beings;]
(Of immeasurable radiance, divine, mental, O best of the Bharatas, indescribable by power, pleasing to all beings.)
O best of the Bharatas, it is of immeasurable radiance, divine, mental, indescribable in its power, and pleasing to all beings. (2-11-3)
श्रुत्वा गुणानहं तस्याः सभायाः पाण्डुनन्दन। दर्शनेप्सुस्तथा राजन्नादित्यमहमब्रुवम् ॥२-११-४॥
śrutvā guṇān ahaṃ tasyāḥ sabhāyāḥ pāṇḍunandana | darśan-epsus tathā rājan ādityam aham abruvam ॥2-11-4॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; अहम् (aham) - I; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; सभायाः (sabhāyāḥ) - in the assembly; पाण्डुनन्दन (pāṇḍunandana) - O delight of the Pāṇḍu (Arjuna); दर्शनेप्सुः (darśan-epsuḥ) - desiring to see; तथा (tathā) - thus; राजन् (rājan) - O king; आदित्यम् (ādityam) - to the Sun; अहम् (aham) - I; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - said;]
(Having heard her qualities, O delight of the Pāṇḍu, I, desiring to see (her), thus, O king, to the Sun, I said.)
O Arjuna, having heard of her virtues in the assembly, I, wishing to see her, thus spoke to the Sun, O king. (2-11-4)
भगवन्द्रष्टुमिच्छामि पितामहसभामहम्। येन सा तपसा शक्या कर्मणा वापि गोपते ॥२-११-५॥
bhagavandraṣṭumicchāmi pitāmahasabhāmaham। yena sā tapasā śakyā karmaṇā vāpi gopate ॥2-11-5॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; पितामह (pitāmaha) - grandfather; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; अहम् (aham) - I; येन (yena) - by which; सा (sā) - that; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; शक्या (śakyā) - can be attained; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; गोपते (gopate) - O lord of cows;]
(O Lord, I wish to see the assembly of the grandsire. By which that (assembly) can be attained, by austerity or by action, O lord of cows, even (so).)
O Lord, I wish to see the assembly of the grandsire. By what means can that assembly be attained—by austerity or by action, O lord of cows, or even otherwise? (2-11-5)
औषधैर्वा तथा युक्तैरुत वा मायया यया। तन्ममाचक्ष्व भगवन्पश्येयं तां सभां कथम् ॥२-११-६॥
auṣadhairvā tathā yuktairuta vā māyayā yayā। tanmamācakṣva bhagavanpaśyeyaṃ tāṃ sabhāṃ katham ॥2-11-6॥
[औषधैः (auṣadhaiḥ) - by medicines; वा (vā) - or; तथा (tathā) - thus; युक्तैः (yuktaiḥ) - by means; उत (uta) - or; वा (vā) - or; मायया (māyayā) - by illusion; यया (yayā) - by which; तत् (tat) - that; मम (mama) - to me; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; पश्येयम् (paśyeyam) - may I see; ताम् (tām) - that; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; कथम् (katham) - how;]
(By medicines or thus by means, or by illusion by which, that to me tell, O venerable one, may I see that assembly, how.)
O venerable one, tell me by what means—by medicines, by other means, or by illusion—I may see that assembly, and how. (2-11-6)
ततः स भगवान्सूर्यो मामुपादाय वीर्यवान्। अगच्छत्तां सभां ब्राह्मीं विपापां विगतक्लमाम् ॥२-११-७॥
tataḥ sa bhagavān sūryo mām upādāya vīryavān। agacchattāṃ sabhāṃ brāhmīṃ vipāpāṃ vigataklamām ॥2-11-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - Sun; माम् (mām) - me; उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - went; तां (tāṃ) - that; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; ब्राह्मीम् (brāhmīm) - of Brahmā; विपापाम् (vipāpām) - sinless; विगत्क्लमाम् (vigataklamām) - free from fatigue;]
(Then he, the venerable Sun, powerful, having taken me, went to that assembly of Brahmā, sinless, free from fatigue.)
Then the venerable Sun, powerful, took me and went to that sinless, fatigue-free assembly of Brahmā. (2-11-7)
एवंरूपेति सा शक्या न निर्देष्टुं जनाधिप। क्षणेन हि बिभर्त्यन्यदनिर्देश्यं वपुस्तथा ॥२-११-८॥
evaṁrūpeti sā śakyā na nirdeṣṭuṁ janādhipa। kṣaṇena hi bibhartyanyadanirdeśyaṁ vapustathā ॥2-11-8॥
[एवंरूपेति (evaṁrūpeti) - thus-formed-it is; सा (sā) - she; शक्या (śakyā) - possible; न (na) - not; निर्देष्टुं (nirdeṣṭuṁ) - to describe; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O king; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in a moment; हि (hi) - indeed; बिभर्ति (bibharti) - assumes; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; अनिर्देश्यं (anirdeśyaṁ) - indescribable; वपुस्तथा (vapustathā) - form thus;]
(Thus-formed-it is she possible not to describe, O king. In a moment indeed (she) assumes another indescribable form thus.)
O king, such is her form that she cannot be described. For in a moment, she indeed assumes another indescribable form. (2-11-8)
न वेद परिमाणं वा संस्थानं वापि भारत। न च रूपं मया तादृग्दृष्टपूर्वं कदाचन ॥२-११-९॥
na veda parimāṇaṃ vā saṃsthānaṃ vāpi bhārata। na ca rūpaṃ mayā tādṛgdṛṣṭapūrvaṃ kadācana ॥2-11-9॥
[न (na) - not; वेद (veda) - knows; परिमाणं (parimāṇam) - measure; वा (vā) - or; संस्थानं (saṃsthānam) - form; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; रूपं (rūpam) - appearance; मया (mayā) - by me; तादृक् (tādṛk) - such; दृष्टपूर्वं (dṛṣṭapūrvam) - seen before; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever;]
(Not knows measure or form or even, O Bhārata. Nor such appearance by me seen before ever.)
O Bhārata, neither the measure nor the form is known, nor have I ever seen such an appearance before. (2-11-9)
सुसुखा सा सभा राजन्न शीता न च घर्मदा। न क्षुत्पिपासे न ग्लानिं प्राप्य तां प्राप्नुवन्त्युत ॥२-११-१०॥
susukhā sā sabhā rājanna śītā na ca gharmadā। na kṣutpipāse na glāniṃ prāpya tāṃ prāpnuvantyuta ॥2-11-10॥
[सुसुखा (susukhā) - very comfortable; सा (sā) - that; सभा (sabhā) - assembly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शीता (śītā) - cool; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; घर्मदा (gharmadā) - hot; न (na) - not; क्षुत्पिपासे (kṣutpipāse) - hunger and thirst; न (na) - not; ग्लानिं (glāniṃ) - fatigue; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; तां (tāṃ) - that; प्राप्नुवन्ति (prāpnuvanti) - they obtain; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(That assembly, O king, is very comfortable, cool, and not hot; neither hunger nor thirst nor fatigue is attained by those who reach it, indeed.)
O king, that assembly is extremely comfortable and cool, not hot; those who reach it do not experience hunger, thirst, or fatigue. (2-11-10)
नानारूपैरिव कृता सुविचित्रैः सुभास्वरैः। स्तम्भैर्न च धृता सा तु शाश्वती न च सा क्षरा ॥२-११-११॥
nānārūpairiva kṛtā suvicitraiḥ subhāsvaraiḥ। stambhairna ca dhṛtā sā tu śāśvatī na ca sā kṣarā ॥2-11-11॥
[नाना-रूपैः-इव (nānā-rūpaiḥ-iva) - with various forms as if; कृता (kṛtā) - made; सुविचित्रैः (suvicitraiḥ) - with very variegated; सुभास्वरैः (subhāsvaraiḥ) - with very shining; स्तम्भैः (stambhaiḥ) - with pillars; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; धृता (dhṛtā) - supported; सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; शाश्वती (śāśvatī) - eternal; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; सा (sā) - she; क्षरा (kṣarā) - perishable;]
(She, as if made with various forms, with very variegated, very shining pillars, is not supported; but she is eternal and she is not perishable.)
She appears as if constructed with various forms, adorned with splendid and radiant pillars, yet she is not supported by them; she is eternal and not perishable. (2-11-11)
अति चन्द्रं च सूर्यं च शिखिनं च स्वयम्प्रभा। दीप्यते नाकपृष्ठस्था भासयन्तीव भास्करम् ॥२-११-१२॥
ati candraṃ ca sūryaṃ ca śikhinaṃ ca svayamprabhā। dīpyate nākapṛṣṭhasthā bhāsayantīva bhāskaram ॥2-11-12॥
[अति (ati) - beyond; over; चन्द्रं (candraṃ) - the moon; च (ca) - and; सूर्यं (sūryaṃ) - the sun; च (ca) - and; शिखिनं (śikhinaṃ) - the fire (with flames); च (ca) - and; स्वयम्प्रभा (svayamprabhā) - self-luminous; दीप्यते (dīpyate) - shines; नाकपृष्ठस्था (nākapṛṣṭhasthā) - situated on the summit of heaven; भासयन्तीव (bhāsayantīva) - as if illuminating; भास्करम् (bhāskaram) - the sun;]
(Beyond the moon and the sun and the fire, self-luminous, shines, situated on the summit of heaven, as if illuminating the sun.)
She, self-luminous, shines beyond the moon, the sun, and the fire, stationed on the summit of heaven, as if illuminating even the sun. (2-11-12)
तस्यां स भगवानास्ते विदधद्देवमायया। स्वयमेकोऽनिशं राजँल्लोकाँल्लोकपितामहः ॥२-११-१३॥
tasyāṃ sa bhagavān āste vidadhad devamāyayā। svayam eko'niśaṃ rājan lokān lokapitāmahaḥ ॥2-11-13॥
[तस्यां (tasyāṃ) - in her; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; आस्ते (āste) - dwells; विदधत् (vidadhat) - performing; देवमायया (devamāyayā) - by divine illusion; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; अनिशम् (aniśam) - constantly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; लोकपितामहः (lokapitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire of the worlds;]
(In her, he, the Lord, dwells, performing (actions) by divine illusion; himself alone, constantly, O king, (he is) the grandsire of the worlds.)
O king, in her, the Lord himself alone constantly dwells, performing (actions) by divine illusion; he is the grandsire of the worlds. (2-11-13)
उपतिष्ठन्ति चाप्येनं प्रजानां पतयः प्रभुम्। दक्षः प्रचेताः पुलहो मरीचिः कश्यपस्तथा ॥२-११-१४॥
upatiṣṭhanti cāpyenaṃ prajānāṃ patayaḥ prabhum। dakṣaḥ pracetāḥ pulaho marīciḥ kaśyapastathā ॥2-11-14॥
[उपतिष्ठन्ति (upatiṣṭhanti) - approach; stand near; attend upon; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; एनम् (enam) - him; प्रजानाम् (prajānām) - of beings; of creatures; पतयः (patayaḥ) - lords; masters; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - the master; the lord; दक्षः (dakṣaḥ) - Dakṣa; प्रचेताः (pracetāḥ) - Pracetas; पुलहः (pulahaḥ) - Pulaha; मरीचिः (marīciḥ) - Marīci; कश्यपः (kaśyapaḥ) - Kaśyapa; तथा (tathā) - also; likewise;]
(The lords of beings also approach and attend upon him; Dakṣa, Pracetas, Pulaha, Marīci, and likewise Kaśyapa, the master.)
The lords of beings, including Dakṣa, Pracetas, Pulaha, Marīci, and also Kaśyapa, approach and serve him, the master. (2-11-14)
भृगुरत्रिर्वसिष्ठश्च गौतमश्च तथाङ्गिराः। मनोऽन्तरिक्षं विद्याश्च वायुस्तेजो जलं मही ॥२-११-१५॥
bhṛgur atrir vasiṣṭhaś ca gautamaś ca tathāṅgirāḥ। mano'ntarikṣaṃ vidyāś ca vāyuḥ tejo jalaṃ mahī ॥2-11-15॥
[भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhṛgu; (name of a sage); अत्रिः (atriḥ) - Atri; (name of a sage); वसिष्ठः (vasiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; (name of a sage); च (ca) - and; गौतमः (gautamaḥ) - Gautama; (name of a sage); च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - also; अङ्गिराः (aṅgirāḥ) - Aṅgiras; (name of a sage); मन् (man) - mind; अन्तरिक्षम् (antarikṣam) - mid-space; atmosphere; विद्याः (vidyāḥ) - knowledges; sciences; च (ca) - and; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; air; तेजः (tejaḥ) - radiance; fire; जलम् (jalam) - water; मही (mahī) - earth;]
(Bhṛgu, Atri, Vasiṣṭha and Gautama and also Aṅgiras; mind, mid-space, knowledges and wind, radiance, water, earth.)

शब्दः स्पर्शस्तथा रूपं रसो गन्धश्च भारत। प्रकृतिश्च विकारश्च यच्चान्यत्कारणं भुवः ॥२-११-१६॥
śabdaḥ sparśas tathā rūpaṃ raso gandhaś ca bhārata। prakṛtiś ca vikāraś ca yac cānyat kāraṇaṃ bhuvaḥ ॥2-11-16॥
[शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; स्पर्शः (sparśaḥ) - touch; तथा (tathā) - and likewise; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; रसः (rasaḥ) - taste; गन्धः (gandhaḥ) - smell; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; प्रकृतिः (prakṛtiḥ) - primordial nature; च (ca) - and; विकारः (vikāraḥ) - modification; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; भुवः (bhuvaḥ) - of the world;]
(Sound, touch, and likewise form, taste, smell, and, O Bhārata, primordial nature and modification and whatever else, and other cause of the world.)
O Bhārata, sound, touch, form, taste, smell, primordial nature, modification, and whatever else is the cause of the world. (2-11-16)
चन्द्रमाः सह नक्षत्रैरादित्यश्च गभस्तिमान्। वायवः क्रतवश्चैव सङ्कल्पः प्राण एव च ॥२-११-१७॥
candramāḥ saha nakṣatrair ādityaś ca gabhastimān। vāyavaḥ kratavaś caiva saṅkalpaḥ prāṇa eva ca ॥2-11-17॥
[चन्द्रमाः (candramāḥ) - moon; सह (saha) - together with; नक्षत्रैः (nakṣatraiḥ) - with stars; आदित्यः (ādityaḥ) - sun; च (ca) - and; गभस्तिमान् (gabhastimān) - radiant; । (।) - वायवः (vāyavaḥ) - winds; क्रतवः (kratavaḥ) - sacrifices; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सङ्कल्पः (saṅkalpaḥ) - resolve; प्राणः (prāṇaḥ) - life-breath; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(The moon together with the stars, and the radiant sun; the winds, the sacrifices, and indeed resolve, and the life-breath as well.)
The moon along with the stars, the radiant sun, the winds, the sacrifices, resolve, and the very life-breath itself. (2-11-17)
एते चान्ये च बहवः स्वयम्भुवमुपस्थिताः। अर्थो धर्मश्च कामश्च हर्षो द्वेषस्तपो दमः ॥२-११-१८॥
ete cānye ca bahavaḥ svayambhuvam-upasthitāḥ। artho dharmaś ca kāmaś ca harṣo dveṣas tapo damaḥ ॥2-11-18॥
[एते (ete) - these; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - and; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; स्वयम्भुवम् (svayambhuvam) - to Svayambhu (the self-born, i.e., Brahmā); उपस्थिताः (upasthitāḥ) - have approached; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; च (ca) - and; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; च (ca) - and; हर्षः (harṣaḥ) - joy; द्वेषः (dveṣaḥ) - hatred; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; दमः (damaḥ) - self-restraint;]
(These and others, many, have approached Svayambhu; purpose, righteousness and desire and joy, hatred, austerity, self-restraint.)
Many others, along with these, have approached Svayambhu (the self-born, Brahmā); purpose, righteousness, desire, joy, hatred, austerity, and self-restraint (are present). (2-11-18)
आयान्ति तस्यां सहिता गन्धर्वाप्सरसस्तथा। विंशतिः सप्त चैवान्ये लोकपालाश्च सर्वशः ॥२-११-१९॥
āyānti tasyāṃ sahitā gandharvāpsarasas tathā। viṃśatiḥ sapta caivānye lokapālāś ca sarvaśaḥ ॥2-11-19॥
[आयान्ति (āyānti) - come; तस्यां (tasyāṃ) - in that (place); सहिता (sahitāḥ) - together; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; अप्सरसः (apsarasaḥ) - Apsarases; तथा (tathā) - also; विंशतिः (viṃśatiḥ) - twenty; सप्त (sapta) - seven; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्ये (anye) - others; लोकपालाः (lokapālāḥ) - guardians of the worlds; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - all;]
(Come in that (place) together Gandharvas, Apsarases also, twenty, seven and indeed others, guardians of the worlds and all.)
In that place, Gandharvas and Apsarases together arrive, as well as twenty, seven, and other guardians of the worlds, all of them. (2-11-19)
शुक्रो बृहस्पतिश्चैव बुधोऽङ्गारक एव च। शनैश्चरश्च राहुश्च ग्रहाः सर्वे तथैव च ॥२-११-२०॥
śukro bṛhaspatiścaiva budho'ṅgāraka eva ca। śanaiścaraśca rāhuśca grahāḥ sarve tathaiva ca ॥2-11-20॥
[शुक्रः (śukraḥ) - Venus; बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Jupiter; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; बुधः (budhaḥ) - Mercury; अङ्गारकः (aṅgārakaḥ) - Mars; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; शनैश्चरः (śanaiścaraḥ) - Saturn; च (ca) - and; राहुः (rāhuḥ) - Rahu; च (ca) - and; ग्रहाः (grahāḥ) - planets; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and;]
(Venus, Jupiter and indeed Mercury, Mars indeed and; Saturn and Rahu and planets all in the same way and.)
Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Saturn, and Rahu—all the planets—are also included in the same way. (2-11-20)
मन्त्रो रथन्तरश्चैव हरिमान्वसुमानपि। आदित्याः साधिराजानो नानाद्वंद्वैरुदाहृताः ॥२-११-२१॥
mantro rathantaraścaiva harimānvasumānapi। ādityāḥ sādhirājano nānā-dvandvairudāhṛtāḥ ॥2-11-21॥

(That assembly, such as was seen, is difficult to obtain in all worlds. This assembly, O tiger among kings, is among men as is yours.)
Such an assembly as was seen is rare in all the worlds. O tiger among kings, this assembly among men is like yours. (2-11-41)
एता मया दृष्टपूर्वाः सभा देवेषु पाण्डव। तवेयं मानुषे लोके सर्वश्रेष्ठतमा सभा ॥२-११-४२॥
etā mayā dṛṣṭapūrvāḥ sabhā deveṣu pāṇḍava। taveyaṃ mānuṣe loke sarvaśreṣṭhatamā sabhā ॥2-11-42॥

(These assemblies have been seen before by me among the gods, O Pāṇḍava. This assembly of yours in the world of men is the most excellent of all assemblies.)
O Pāṇḍava, I have seen such assemblies before among the gods. But this assembly of yours in the world of men is the most excellent of all. (2-11-42)

वरुणस्य सभायां तु नागास्ते कथिता विभो। दैत्येन्द्राश्चैव भूयिष्ठाः सरितः सागरास्तथा ॥२-११-४४॥

(In that manner, the yakṣas of the lord of wealth, guhyakas, rākṣasas likewise, gandharvas, apsarases indeed, and the venerable one, the bull-bannered one.)

पितृलोकगतश्चापि त्वया विप्र पिता मम। दृष्टः पाण्डुर्महाभागः कथं चासि समागतः ॥२-११-५०॥

किमुक्तवांश्च भगवन्नेतदिच्छामि वेदितुम्। त्वत्तः श्रोतुमहं सर्वं परं कौतूहलं हि मे ॥२-११-५१॥
kimuktavāṁśca bhagavannetadicchāmi veditum। tvattaḥ śrotumahaṁ sarvaṁ paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi me ॥2-11-51॥

yan māṃ pṛcchasi rājendra hariścandraṃ prati prabho। tat te'haṃ sampravakṣyāmi māhātmyaṃ tasya dhīmataḥ ॥2-11-52॥

स राजा बलवानासीत्सम्राट्सर्वमहीक्षिताम्। तस्य सर्वे महीपालाः शासनावनताः स्थिताः ॥२-११-५३॥
sa rājā balavān āsīt samrāṭ sarva-mahī-kṣitām। tasya sarve mahī-pālāḥ śāsana-avanatāḥ sthitāḥ ॥2-11-53॥

(All those kings brought wealth by command of him. In that sacrifice, they became servers of the twice-born.)

(And he satisfied the Brāhmaṇas also with various riches, those who had assembled from various directions, having arrived at the time of the snake-sacrifice.)

[भक्ष्यैः (bhakṣyaiḥ) - by eatables; भोज्यैः (bhojyaiḥ) - by foods; च (ca) - and; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - by various; यथाकामपुरस्कृतैः (yathākāmapuraskṛtaiḥ) - honoured as per desire; रत्नौघतर्पितैः (ratnaughatarpitaiḥ) - satisfied by heaps of jewels; तुष्टैः (tuṣṭaiḥ) - by satisfied; द्विजैः (dvijaiḥ) - by Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; समुदाहृतम् (samudāhṛtam) - was declared; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - brilliant; च (ca) - and; यशस्वी (yaśasvī) - famous; च (ca) - and; नृपेभ्यः (nṛpebhyaḥ) - than kings; अभ्यधिकः (abhyadhikaḥ) - superior; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(By eatables, foods, and various (things), honoured as per desire, satisfied by heaps of jewels, by satisfied Brāhmaṇas, and (it) was declared. Brilliant and famous and superior to kings he became. (2-11-59))

[एतस्मात् (etasmāt) - from this; कारणात् (kāraṇāt) - reason; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; हरिश्चन्द्रः (hariścandraḥ) - Hariścandra; विराजते (virājate) - shines; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - than those; राजसहस्रेभ्यः (rājasahasrebhyaḥ) - than thousands of kings; तत् (tat) - that; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(From this reason, O son of Pṛthā, Hariścandra shines. Than those thousands of kings, know that, O bull among the Bharatas.)
For this reason, O Pārtha, Hariścandra stands out. Know, O best of the Bharatas, that he surpasses those thousands of kings. (2-11-60)
समाप्य च हरिश्चन्द्रो महायज्ञं प्रतापवान्। अभिषिक्तः स शुशुभे साम्राज्येन नराधिप ॥२-११-६१॥
samāpya ca hariścandro mahāyajñaṃ pratāpavān। abhiṣiktaḥ sa śuśubhe sāmrājyena narādhipa ॥2-11-61॥

(Having completed the great sacrifice, Hariścandra, glorious, anointed, he shone with sovereignty, the king.)
Having completed the great sacrifice, the glorious Hariścandra, having been anointed, shone as king with sovereignty. (2-11-61)
ये चान्येऽपि महीपाला राजसूयं महाक्रतुम्। यजन्ते ते महेन्द्रेण मोदन्ते सह भारत ॥२-११-६२॥
ye cānye'pi mahīpālā rājasūyaṃ mahākratum। yajante te mahendreṇa modante saha bhārata ॥2-11-62॥
[ये (ye) - who; (plural, masculine); च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; अपि (api) - also; महीपाला (mahīpālā) - kings; राजसूयम् (rājasūyam) - Rājasūya; (royal consecration sacrifice); महाक्रतुम् (mahākratum) - great sacrifice; यजन्ते (yajante) - perform (sacrifice); ते (te) - they; महेन्द्रेण (mahendreṇa) - with Mahendra; (Indra, the great lord); मोदन्ते (modante) - rejoice; सह (saha) - together with; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; (descendant of Bharata);]
(Who and other kings also, the Rājasūya great sacrifice perform; they with Mahendra rejoice together, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, those other kings also who perform the great Rājasūya sacrifice rejoice together with Mahendra (Indra). (2-11-62)
ये चापि निधनं प्राप्ताः सङ्ग्रामेष्वपलायिनः। ते तत्सदः समासाद्य मोदन्ते भरतर्षभ ॥२-११-६३॥
ye cāpi nidhanaṃ prāptāḥ saṅgrāmeṣvapalāyinaḥ। te tatsadaḥ samāsādya modante bharatarṣabha ॥2-11-63॥
[ये (ye) - who; (those) च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; निधनम् (nidhanam) - death; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - attained; सङ्ग्रामेषु (saṅgrāmeṣu) - in battles; अपलायिनः (apalāyinaḥ) - not fleeing; ते (te) - they; तत् (tat) - that; सदः (sadaḥ) - assembly; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having reached; मोदन्ते (modante) - rejoice; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Who and also attained death in battles not fleeing, they that assembly having reached rejoice, O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, those who did not flee and attained death in battle, having reached that assembly, rejoice. (2-11-63)
तपसा ये च तीव्रेण त्यजन्तीह कलेवरम्। तेऽपि तत्स्थानमासाद्य श्रीमन्तो भान्ति नित्यशः ॥२-११-६४॥
tapasā ye ca tīvreṇa tyajantīha kalevaram। te'pi tatsthānam āsādya śrīmanto bhānti nityaśaḥ ॥2-11-64॥
[तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; तीव्रेण (tīvreṇa) - with intense; त्यजन्ति (tyajanti) - abandon; इह (iha) - here; कलेवरम् (kalevaram) - body; ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - also; तत् (tat) - that; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having attained; श्रीमन्तः (śrīmantaḥ) - prosperous; भान्ति (bhānti) - shine; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - always;]
(By austerity, who and with intense abandon here body, they also that place having attained, prosperous shine always.)
Those who abandon their bodies here with intense austerity, they too, having attained that place, shine forth always as prosperous. (2-11-64)
पिता च त्वाह कौन्तेय पाण्डुः कौरवनन्दनः। हरिश्चन्द्रे श्रियं दृष्ट्वा नृपतौ जातविस्मयः ॥२-११-६५॥
pitā ca tvāha kaunteya pāṇḍuḥ kauravanandanaḥ। hariścandre śriyaṃ dṛṣṭvā nṛpatau jātavismayaḥ ॥2-11-65॥
[पिता (pitā) - father; च (ca) - and; त्वा (tvā) - to you; आह (āha) - said; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; पाण्डुः (pāṇḍuḥ) - Pandu; कौरवनन्दनः (kauravanandanaḥ) - delight of the Kauravas; हरिश्चन्द्रे (hariścandre) - in Harishchandra; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; नृपतौ (nṛpatau) - in the king; जातविस्मयः (jātavismayaḥ) - having become astonished;]
(Father and said to you, O son of Kunti, Pandu, delight of the Kauravas, having seen prosperity in Harishchandra, in the king, having become astonished.)
Pandu, the father and delight of the Kauravas, said to you, O son of Kunti, having become astonished upon seeing the prosperity of King Harishchandra. (2-11-65)
समर्थोऽसि महीं जेतुं भ्रातरस्ते वशे स्थिताः। राजसूयं क्रतुश्रेष्ठमाहरस्वेति भारत ॥२-११-६६॥
samartho'si mahīṃ jetuṃ bhrātaras te vaśe sthitāḥ। rājasūyaṃ kratuśreṣṭham āharasveti bhārata ॥2-11-66॥
[समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; असि (asi) - you are; महीं (mahīṃ) - the earth; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; ते (te) - your; वशे (vaśe) - under control; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - are situated; राजसूयम् (rājasūyam) - Rājasūya (royal consecration); क्रतुः (kratuḥ) - sacrifice; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - best; आहर (āhara) - perform; स्व (sva) - your; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(You are capable to conquer the earth; your brothers are under control. Perform the best sacrifice, the Rājasūya, thus, O Bhārata.)
You have the ability to conquer the earth, and your brothers are obedient to you. Therefore, O Bhārata, perform the greatest of sacrifices, the Rājasūya. (2-11-66)
तस्य त्वं पुरुषव्याघ्र सङ्कल्पं कुरु पाण्डव। गन्तारस्ते महेन्द्रस्य पूर्वैः सह सलोकताम् ॥२-११-६७॥
tasya tvaṃ puruṣavyāghra saṅkalpaṃ kuru pāṇḍava। gantāraste mahendrasya pūrvaiḥ saha salokatām ॥2-11-67॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - tiger among men; सङ्कल्पं (saṅkalpam) - resolve; कुरु (kuru) - make; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; गन्तारः (gantāraḥ) - goers; ते (te) - your; महेन्द्रस्य (mahendrasya) - of Mahendra; पूर्वैः (pūrvaiḥ) - with the former ones; सह (saha) - together; सलोकताम् (salokatām) - the same world;]
(Of him you, tiger among men, make resolve, O Pāṇḍava. Goers your of Mahendra with the former ones together the same world.)
Therefore, O tiger among men, you should make up your mind, O Pāṇḍava. Your companions will attain the same world as Mahendra together with the former ones. (2-11-67)
बहुविघ्नश्च नृपते क्रतुरेष स्मृतो महान्। छिद्राण्यत्र हि वाञ्छन्ति यज्ञघ्ना ब्रह्मराक्षसाः ॥२-११-६८॥
bahuvighnaś ca nṛpate kratureṣa smṛto mahān| chidrāṇy atra hi vāñchanti yajñaghnā brahmarākṣasāḥ ||2-11-68||
[बहु-विघ्नः (bahu-vighnaḥ) - many-obstacles; च (ca) - and; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; क्रतुः (kratuḥ) - sacrifice; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is considered; महान् (mahān) - great; छिद्राणि (chidrāṇi) - flaws; अत्र (atra) - here; हि (hi) - indeed; वाञ्छन्ति (vāñchanti) - desire; यज्ञ-घ्नाः (yajña-ghnāḥ) - destroyers of sacrifice; ब्रह्म-राक्षसाः (brahma-rākṣasāḥ) - brahma-rākṣasas;]
(O king, this sacrifice is considered to have many obstacles and is great. Here, indeed, the brahma-rākṣasas, destroyers of sacrifice, desire flaws.)
O king, this great sacrifice is known to be beset with many obstacles. Here, the brahma-rākṣasas, destroyers of sacrifice, eagerly seek out flaws. (2-11-68)
युद्धं च पृष्ठगमनं पृथिवीक्षयकारकम्। किञ्चिदेव निमित्तं च भवत्यत्र क्षयावहम् ॥२-११-६९॥
yuddhaṃ ca pṛṣṭhagamanaṃ pṛthivīkṣayakārakam। kiñcideva nimittaṃ ca bhavatyatra kṣayāvaham ॥2-11-69॥
[युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; च (ca) - and; पृष्ठगमनम् (pṛṣṭhagamanam) - retreat; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; क्षयकारकम् (kṣayakārakam) - cause of destruction; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - a little; एव (eva) - indeed; निमित्तम् (nimittam) - cause; च (ca) - and; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; अत्र (atra) - here; क्षयावहम् (kṣayāvaham) - bringing destruction;]
(Battle and retreat are causes of the earth's destruction. Even a little cause here becomes destructive.)
Battle and retreat both lead to the destruction of the earth. Even a small cause here can bring about ruin. (2-11-69)
एतत्सञ्चिन्त्य राजेन्द्र यत्क्षमं तत्समाचर। अप्रमत्तोत्थितो नित्यं चातुर्वर्ण्यस्य रक्षणे ॥ भव एधस्व मोदस्व दानैस्तर्पय च द्विजान् ॥२-११-७०॥
etatsañcintya rājendra yatkṣamaṃ tatsamācara। apramattotthito nityaṃ cāturvarṇyasya rakṣaṇe ॥ bhava edhasva modasva dānaistarpa ya ca dvijān ॥2-11-70॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; यत् (yat) - what; क्षमं (kṣamam) - proper; तत् (tat) - that; समाचर (samācara) - perform; अप्रमत्त (apramatta) - not careless; उत्थितः (utthitaḥ) - arisen; नित्यं (nityam) - always; चातुर्वर्ण्यस्य (cāturvarṇyasya) - of the four classes; रक्षणे (rakṣaṇe) - in protection; भव (bhava) - be; एधस्व (edhasva) - prosper; मोदस्व (modasva) - rejoice; दानैः (dānaiḥ) - with gifts; तर्पय (tarpaya) - satisfy; च (ca) - and; द्विजान् (dvijān) - the twice-born;]
(Having considered this, O king, do what is proper. Always arise without carelessness for the protection of the four classes. Be, prosper, rejoice, and satisfy the twice-born with gifts. (2-11-70))
O king, after reflecting on this, act as is proper. Always be vigilant in protecting the four classes. Be prosperous, rejoice, and satisfy the twice-born with gifts. (2-11-70)
एतत्ते विस्तरेणोक्तं यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि। आपृच्छे त्वां गमिष्यामि दाशार्हनगरीं प्रति ॥२-११-७१॥
etat te vistareṇoktaṃ yan māṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi। āpṛcche tvāṃ gamiṣyāmi dāśārhanagarīṃ prati ॥2-11-71॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; विस्तरेण (vistareṇa) - in detail; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - spoken; यत् (yat) - which; माम् (mām) - me; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; परिपृच्छसि (paripṛcchasi) - ask; आपृच्छे (āpṛcche) - I take leave; त्वां (tvāṃ) - from you; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I shall go; दाशार्हनगरीं (dāśārhanagarīṃ) - to the city of the Dāśārhas; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(This has been spoken to you in detail which you ask me. I take leave from you; I shall go towards the city of the Dāśārhas.)
I have explained this to you in detail as you asked me. Now, I take leave from you and shall go to the city of the Dāśārhas. (2-11-71)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

एवमाख्याय पार्थेभ्यो नारदो जनमेजय। जगाम तैर्वृतो राजन्नृषिभिर्यैः समागतः ॥२-११-७२॥
evam ākhyāya pārthebhyo nārado janamejaya। jagāma tair vṛto rājann ṛṣibhir yaiḥ samāgataḥ ॥2-11-72॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; आख्याय (ākhyāya) - having narrated; पार्थेभ्यः (pārthebhyaḥ) - to the sons of Pṛthā; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - O Janamejaya; जगाम (jagāma) - departed; तैः (taiḥ) - with them; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - accompanied; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by the sages; यैः (yaiḥ) - by whom; समागतः (samāgataḥ) - assembled;]
(Thus having narrated to the sons of Pṛthā, Nārada, O Janamejaya, departed, accompanied by those sages who had assembled, O king.)
O Janamejaya, after thus narrating to the sons of Pṛthā, Nārada departed, accompanied by the sages who had assembled there, O king. (2-11-72)
गते तु नारदे पार्थो भ्रातृभिः सह कौरव। राजसूयं क्रतुश्रेष्ठं चिन्तयामास भारत ॥२-११-७३॥
gate tu nārade pārtho bhrātṛbhiḥ saha kaurava। rājasūyaṃ kratuśreṣṭhaṃ cintayāmāsa bhārata ॥2-11-73॥
[गते (gate) - having gone; तु (tu) - but; नारदे (nārade) - Nārada; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सह (saha) - together; कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava; राजसूयम् (rājasūyam) - Rājasūya; क्रतुश्रेष्ठम् (kratuśreṣṭham) - the best of sacrifices; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - pondered; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(But when Nārada had gone, Pārtha, together with his brothers, O Kaurava, pondered the Rājasūya, the best of sacrifices, O Bhārata.)
O Kaurava, after Nārada had departed, Pārtha, along with his brothers, began to contemplate the Rājasūya, the greatest of sacrifices, O Bhārata. (2-11-73)
