Core-Pancharatra: Yudhisthira finally asks Krishna for his opinion on Rajasuya.

ऋषेस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा निशश्वास युधिष्ठिरः। चिन्तयन्राजसूयाप्तिं न लेभे शर्म भारत ॥२-१२-१॥
ṛṣes tad vacanaṃ śrutvā niśaśvāsa yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। cintayan rājasūyāptiṃ na lebhe śarma bhārata ॥2-12-1॥

(Having heard that speech of the sage, Yudhishthira sighed; thinking of the attainment of the Rājasūya, he did not obtain peace, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, having heard the sage's words, Yudhishthira sighed and, thinking about the attainment of the Rājasūya sacrifice, found no peace. (2-12-1)
राजर्षीणां हि तं श्रुत्वा महिमानं महात्मनाम्। यज्वनां कर्मभिः पुण्यैर्लोकप्राप्तिं समीक्ष्य च ॥२-१२-२॥
rājarṣīṇāṃ hi taṃ śrutvā mahimānaṃ mahātmanām। yajvanāṃ karmabhiḥ puṇyair lokaprāptiṃ samīkṣya ca ॥2-12-2॥
[राजर्षीणां (rājarṣīṇām) - of royal sages; हि (hi) - indeed; तं (tam) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; महिमानं (mahimānam) - greatness; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of great souls; यज्वनां (yajvanām) - of sacrificers; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; पुण्यैः (puṇyaiḥ) - by meritorious; लोकप्राप्तिं (lokaprāptim) - attainment of worlds; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having observed; च (ca) - and;]
(Indeed, having heard that greatness of the royal sages, and having observed the attainment of worlds by the meritorious actions of the sacrificers.)
Indeed, upon hearing of the greatness of the royal sages and observing how the sacrificers attained worlds through their meritorious deeds, (2-12-2)
हरिश्चन्द्रं च राजर्षिं रोचमानं विशेषतः। यज्वानं यज्ञमाहर्तुं राजसूयमियेष सः ॥२-१२-३॥
hariścandraṃ ca rājarṣiṃ rocamānaṃ viśeṣataḥ। yajvānaṃ yajñam āhartuṃ rājasūyam iyeṣa saḥ ॥2-12-3॥

(Hariścandra and the royal sage, shining especially, the sacrificer, to perform the sacrifice, the Rājasūya, desired he.)
Hariścandra, the illustrious royal sage and sacrificer, especially shone forth, desiring to perform the Rājasūya sacrifice. (2-12-3)
युधिष्ठिरस्ततः सर्वानर्चयित्वा सभासदः। प्रत्यर्चितश्च तैः सर्वैर्यज्ञायैव मनो दधे ॥२-१२-४॥
yudhiṣṭhiras tataḥ sarvān arcayitvā sabhāsadaḥ। pratyarcitaś ca taiḥ sarvaiḥ yajñāyaiva mano dadhe ॥2-12-4॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having honored; सभासदः (sabhāsadaḥ) - assembly members; प्रत्यर्चितः (pratyarcitaḥ) - having been honored in return; च (ca) - and; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; यज्ञाय (yajñāya) - for the sacrifice; एव (eva) - only; मनो (mano) - mind; दधे (dadhe) - he set;]
(Yudhishthira then, having honored all the assembly members, and having been honored in return by all of them, set his mind only on the sacrifice.)
Then Yudhishthira, after honoring all the assembly members and being honored by them in return, devoted his mind solely to the sacrifice. (2-12-4)
स राजसूयं राजेन्द्र कुरूणामृषभः क्रतुम्। आहर्तुं प्रवणं चक्रे मनः सञ्चिन्त्य सोऽसकृत् ॥२-१२-५॥
sa rājasūyaṃ rājendra kurūṇāmṛṣabhaḥ kratum। āhartuṃ pravaṇaṃ cakre manaḥ sañcintya so'sakṛt ॥2-12-5॥

(He, having considered in his mind, O king, the chief of the Kurus, made his mind repeatedly inclined to perform the Rājasūya sacrifice.)
O king, the chief of the Kurus, having repeatedly considered in his mind, resolved to perform the Rājasūya sacrifice. (2-12-5)
भूयश्चाद्भुतवीर्यौजा धर्ममेवानुपालयन्। किं हितं सर्वलोकानां भवेदिति मनो दधे ॥२-१२-६॥
bhūyaścādbhutavīryaujā dharmamevānupālayan। kiṃ hitaṃ sarvalokānāṃ bhavediti mano dadhe ॥2-12-6॥

(Again and of wondrous strength and energy, observing only dharma, (he) placed (his) mind thus: "What would be the benefit of all worlds?")
Again, endowed with wondrous strength and energy, and devoted solely to dharma, he set his mind to the thought: "What would be beneficial for all beings?" (2-12-6)
अनुगृह्णन्प्रजाः सर्वाः सर्वधर्मविदां वरः। अविशेषेण सर्वेषां हितं चक्रे युधिष्ठिरः ॥२-१२-७॥
anugṛhṇanprajāḥ sarvāḥ sarvadharmavidāṃ varaḥ। aviśeṣeṇa sarveṣāṃ hitaṃ cakre yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥2-12-7॥
[अनुगृह्णन् (anugṛhṇan) - favoring; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; सर्वधर्मविदां (sarvadharmavidām) - of all knowers of dharma; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; अविशेषेण (aviśeṣeṇa) - without distinction; सर्वेषां (sarveṣām) - of all; हितम् (hitam) - welfare; चक्रे (cakre) - did; made; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(Favoring all subjects, the best among all knowers of dharma, Yudhishthira, without distinction, did the welfare of all.)
Yudhishthira, the foremost among all knowers of dharma, favored all his subjects equally and worked for the welfare of everyone. (2-12-7)
एवं गते ततस्तस्मिन्पितरीवाश्वसञ्जनाः। न तस्य विद्यते द्वेष्टा ततोऽस्याजातशत्रुता ॥२-१२-८॥
evaṃ gate tatas tasmin pitarīvāśvasañjanāḥ। na tasya vidyate dveṣṭā tato'syājātaśatrutā ॥2-12-8॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; गते (gate) - having gone; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; पितरि (pitari) - in the father; इव (iva) - like; आश्वसञ्जनाः (āśvasañjanāḥ) - those who cause comfort; न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - his; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; द्वेष्टा (dveṣṭā) - hater; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; अस्य (asya) - his; अजातशत्रुता (ajātaśatrutā) - state of having no enemies;]
(Thus, when that happened, then in him, like in a father, those who cause comfort. Not his exists hater; therefore, his state of having no enemies. (2-12-8))
Thus, when that happened, then, just as in a father, those around him became comforting. He has no one who hates him; therefore, he is one whose enemies are unborn. (2-12-8)
स मन्त्रिणः समानाय्य भ्रातॄंश्च वदतां वरः। राजसूयं प्रति तदा पुनः पुनरपृच्छत ॥२-१२-९॥
sa mantriṇaḥ samānāyya bhrātṝṁś ca vadatāṁ varaḥ। rājasūyaṁ prati tadā punaḥ punarapṛcchata ॥2-12-9॥
[स (sa) - he; मन्त्रिणः (mantriṇaḥ) - ministers; समानाय्य (samānāyya) - having assembled; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; च (ca) - and; वदताम् (vadatām) - of those who speak; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; राजसूयम् (rājasūyam) - Rājasūya sacrifice; प्रति (prati) - regarding; तदा (tadā) - then; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अपृच्छत् (apṛcchat) - asked;]
(He, having assembled the ministers and brothers, the best among speakers, then again and again asked regarding the Rājasūya sacrifice.)
He, the best among speakers, gathered the ministers and his brothers and repeatedly asked them about the Rājasūya sacrifice. (2-12-9)
ते पृच्छ्यमानाः सहिता वचोऽर्थ्यं मन्त्रिणस्तदा। युधिष्ठिरं महाप्राज्ञं यियक्षुमिदमब्रुवन् ॥२-१२-१०॥
te pṛcchyamānāḥ sahitā vaco'rthyaṃ mantriṇas tadā। yudhiṣṭhiraṃ mahāprājñaṃ yiyakṣum idam abruvan ॥2-12-10॥
[ते (te) - they; पृच्छ्यमानाः (pṛcchyamānāḥ) - being asked; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; अर्थ्यम् (arthyam) - meaningful; मन्त्रिणः (mantriṇaḥ) - ministers; तदा (tadā) - then; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; महाप्राज्ञम् (mahāprājñam) - greatly wise; यियक्षुम् (yiyakṣum) - desiring to sacrifice; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said;]
(They, being asked, together the ministers then meaningful speech to Yudhishthira, the greatly wise, desiring to sacrifice, this said.)
Then, the ministers, being asked, together addressed these meaningful words to Yudhishthira, the greatly wise, who desired to perform a sacrifice. (2-12-10)
येनाभिषिक्तो नृपतिर्वारुणं गुणमृच्छति। तेन राजापि सन्कृत्स्नं सम्राड्गुणमभीप्सति ॥२-१२-११॥
yenābhiṣikto nṛpatir vāruṇaṃ guṇam ṛcchati। tena rājāpi saṃkṛtsnaṃ samrāḍ guṇam abhīpsati ॥2-12-11॥
[येन (yena) - by whom; अभिषिक्तः (abhiṣiktaḥ) - anointed; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; वारुणम् (vāruṇam) - of Varuṇa (god of law/order); गुणम् (guṇam) - quality; ऋच्छति (ṛcchati) - attains; तेन (tena) - by him; राजा (rājā) - king; अपि (api) - also; सन् (san) - being; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - entire; सम्राट् (samrāṭ) - emperor; गुणम् (guṇam) - quality; अभीप्सति (abhīpsati) - desires;]
(By whom the king is anointed, he attains the quality of Varuṇa; by him, even being a king, the emperor desires the entire quality.)
The king who is anointed by him attains the quality of Varuṇa; by that same person, even an emperor desires to possess all those qualities. (2-12-11)
तस्य सम्राड्गुणार्हस्य भवतः कुरुनन्दन। राजसूयस्य समयं मन्यन्ते सुहृदस्तव ॥२-१२-१२॥
tasya samrāḍ-guṇārhasya bhavataḥ kurunandana। rājasūyasya samayaṃ manyante suhṛdas-tava ॥2-12-12॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; सम्राट् (samrāṭ) - emperor; गुण-अर्हस्य (guṇa-arhasya) - worthy of virtues; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus; राजसूयस्य (rājasūyasya) - of the Rājasūya (sacrifice); समयं (samayaṃ) - time; मन्यन्ते (manyante) - they consider; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; तव (tava) - your;]
(Of him, the emperor, worthy of virtues, of you, O joy of the Kurus, the time of the Rājasūya (sacrifice), your friends consider.)
O Kurunandana, your friends consider that the time for the Rājasūya sacrifice, worthy of an emperor like you, has come. (2-12-12)
तस्य यज्ञस्य समयः स्वाधीनः क्षत्रसम्पदा। साम्ना षडग्नयो यस्मिंश्चीयन्ते संशितव्रतैः ॥२-१२-१३॥
tasya yajñasya samayaḥ svādhīnaḥ kṣatrasampadā। sāmnā ṣaḍagnayo yasmiṁścīyante saṁśitavrataiḥ ॥2-12-13॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of his; यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of the sacrifice; समयः (samayaḥ) - the time; स्वाधीनः (svādhīnaḥ) - under one's own control; क्षत्रसम्पदा (kṣatrasampadā) - by the wealth of the kṣatriya (warrior class); साम्ना (sāmnā) - by the Sāman (chant); षट्-अग्नयः (ṣaṭ-agnayaḥ) - six fires; यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in which; चीयन्ते (cīyante) - are increased; संशितव्रतैः (saṁśitavrataiḥ) - by those of firm vows;]
(Of his sacrifice, the time is under his own control by the wealth of the kṣatriya; by the Sāman, the six fires in which are increased by those of firm vows.)
The time of his sacrifice is under his own control through the wealth of the kṣatriya; by the chanting of the Sāman, the six fires in which are increased by those who have firm vows. (2-12-13)
दर्वीहोमानुपादाय सर्वान्यः प्राप्नुते क्रतून्। अभिषेकं च यज्ञान्ते सर्वजित्तेन चोच्यते ॥२-१२-१४॥
darvī-homān-upādāya sarvān yaḥ prāpnute kratūn | abhiṣekaṃ ca yajñānte sarva-jit tena ca ucyate ||2-12-14||
[दर्वी (darvī) - ladle; होमान् (homān) - oblations; उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्राप्नुते (prāpnute) - obtains; क्रतून् (kratūn) - sacrifices; अभिषेकं (abhiṣekaṃ) - anointing; च (ca) - and; यज्ञान्ते (yajñānte) - at the end of the sacrifice; सर्वजित् (sarva-jit) - conqueror of all; तेन (tena) - by him; च (ca) - and; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]
(Having taken the ladle for oblations, whoever obtains all the sacrifices, and the anointing at the end of the sacrifice, by him is called 'conqueror of all'.)
Whoever, having taken the ladle for oblations, obtains all the sacrifices and the anointing at the end of the sacrifice, is called 'the conqueror of all'. (2-12-14)
समर्थोऽसि महाबाहो सर्वे ते वशगा वयम्। अविचार्य महाराज राजसूये मनः कुरु ॥२-१२-१५॥
samartho'si mahābāho sarve te vaśagā vayam। avicārya mahārāja rājasūye manaḥ kuru ॥2-12-15॥

(You are capable, O mighty-armed; all of us are under your control. Without deliberation, O great king, make up your mind regarding the Rājasūya.)
You are capable, O mighty-armed one; we are all under your command. O great king, decide your mind about the Rājasūya sacrifice without hesitation. (2-12-15)
इत्येवं सुहृदः सर्वे पृथक्च सह चाब्रुवन्। स धर्म्यं पाण्डवस्तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा विशां पते ॥ धृष्टमिष्टं वरिष्ठं च जग्राह मनसारिहा ॥२-१२-१६॥
ityevaṃ suhṛdaḥ sarve pṛthak ca saha ca abruvan। sa dharmyaṃ pāṇḍavaḥ teṣām vacaḥ śrutvā viśāṃ pate ॥ dhṛṣṭam iṣṭam variṣṭham ca jagrāha manasā ari-hā ॥2-12-16॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this manner; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; च (ca) - and; सह (saha) - together; च (ca) - and; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - spoke; स (sa) - he; धर्म्यम् (dharmyam) - righteous; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava; तेषाम् (teṣām) - their; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; विशाम् (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - lord; धृष्टम् (dhṛṣṭam) - bold; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - desired; वरिष्ठम् (variṣṭham) - excellent; च (ca) - and; जग्राह (jagrāha) - accepted; मनसा (manasā) - with mind; अरिहा (ari-hā) - destroyer of enemies;]
(Thus, in this manner, all the friends, separately and together, spoke. He, the Pāṇḍava, having heard their righteous words, O lord of men, accepted (what was) bold, desired, and excellent with (his) mind, O destroyer of enemies.)
Thus, all the friends, both individually and together, spoke in this manner. The Pāṇḍava, having heard their righteous words, O lord of men, accepted with his mind what was bold, desirable, and excellent, O destroyer of enemies. (2-12-16)
श्रुत्वा सुहृद्वचस्तच्च जानंश्चाप्यात्मनः क्षमम्। पुनः पुनर्मनो दध्रे राजसूयाय भारत ॥२-१२-१७॥
śrutvā suhṛd-vacas-tac ca jānan ca api ātmanaḥ kṣamam। punaḥ punaḥ manaḥ dadhre rājasūyāya bhārata ॥2-12-17॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सुहृद्-वचः (suhṛd-vacaḥ) - friend's words; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - capacity; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; दध्रे (dadhre) - fixed; राजसूयाय (rājasūyāya) - for the Rājasūya (sacrifice); भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Having heard that friend's words and also knowing his own capacity, again and again he fixed his mind on the Rājasūya, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, having listened to his friend's words and knowing his own ability, he repeatedly set his mind on the Rājasūya sacrifice. (2-12-17)
स भ्रातृभिः पुनर्धीमानृत्विग्भिश्च महात्मभिः। धौम्यद्वैपायनाद्यैश्च मन्त्रयामास मन्त्रिभिः ॥२-१२-१८॥
sa bhrātṛbhiḥ punar dhīmān ṛtvigbhiś ca mahātmabhiḥ। dhaumyadvaipāyanādyaiś ca mantrayāmāsa mantribhiḥ ॥2-12-18॥

(He, with brothers, again, wise, with officiating priests and with great souls, with Dhaumya, Vaipāyana and others, and consulted with ministers.)

How could I have that desire which belongs to the rājasūya, the worthy emperor, the well-doer, the faithful, and the one who speaks? (2-12-19)

एवमुक्तास्तु ते तेन राज्ञा राजीवलोचन। इदमूचुर्वचः काले धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥ अर्हस्त्वमसि धर्मज्ञ राजसूयं महाक्रतुम् ॥२-१२-२०॥
evam-uktās tu te tena rājñā rājīvalocana। idam ūcur vacaḥ kāle dharmātmānaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram ॥ arhās tvam asi dharmajña rājasūyaṃ mahākratum ॥2-12-20॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - spoken; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; तेन (tena) - by him; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; राजीवलोचन (rājīvalocana) - O lotus-eyed one; इदम् (idam) - this; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; काले (kāle) - at the right time; धर्मात्मानम् (dharmātmānam) - the righteous-souled; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; अर्हः (arhaḥ) - worthy; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; राजसूयम् (rājasūyam) - Rājasūya (sacrifice); महाक्रतुम् (mahākratum) - great sacrifice;]
(Thus, spoken to by him, the king, O lotus-eyed one, they said these words at the right time to the righteous-souled Yudhishthira: You are worthy, O knower of dharma, of the great sacrifice, the Rājasūya.)
O lotus-eyed one, thus addressed by the king, they spoke these words at the proper time to the righteous Yudhishthira: "You are indeed worthy, O knower of dharma, to perform the great Rājasūya sacrifice." (2-12-20)
अथैवमुक्ते नृपतावृत्विग्भिरृषिभिस्तथा। मन्त्रिणो भ्रातरश्चास्य तद्वचः प्रत्यपूजयन् ॥२-१२-२१॥
athaivamukte nṛpatāvṛtvigbhirṛṣibhistathā। mantriṇo bhrātaraścāsya tadvacaḥ pratyapūjayan ॥2-12-21॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been spoken; नृपता (nṛpatā) - by the king; वृत्विग्भिः (vṛtvigbhiḥ) - by the officiating priests; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by the sages; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; मन्त्रिणः (mantriṇaḥ) - the ministers; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - the brothers; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; तत् (tat) - that; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; प्रत्यपूजयन् (pratyapūjayan) - honored;]
(Then, when thus spoken by the king, by the officiating priests, and by the sages in the same way, the ministers and his brothers honored that speech.)
After these words were spoken by the king, the priests, and the sages, the ministers and his brothers honored his statement. (2-12-21)
स तु राजा महाप्राज्ञः पुनरेवात्मनात्मवान्। भूयो विममृशे पार्थो लोकानां हितकाम्यया ॥२-१२-२२॥
sa tu rājā mahāprājñaḥ punarevātmānātmavān। bhūyo vimamṛśe pārtho lokānāṃ hitakāmyayā ॥2-12-22॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; राजा (rājā) - king; महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - greatly wise; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by himself; आत्मवान् (ātmavān) - self-possessed; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; विममृशे (vimamṛśe) - reflected; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; हित (hita) - welfare; काम्यया (kāmyayā) - with the desire;]
(He but king greatly wise again indeed by himself self-possessed again reflected Pārtha (Arjuna) of the worlds with the desire for welfare.)
But that greatly wise king, self-possessed, Arjuna, again reflected by himself, desiring the welfare of the worlds. (2-12-22)
सामर्थ्ययोगं सम्प्रेक्ष्य देशकालौ व्ययागमौ। विमृश्य सम्यक्च धिया कुर्वन्प्राज्ञो न सीदति ॥२-१२-२३॥
sāmarthyayogaṃ samprekṣya deśakālau vyayāgamau। vimṛśya samyak ca dhiyā kurvan prājño na sīdati ॥2-12-23॥
[सामर्थ्ययोगं (sāmarthya-yogam) - union of capability; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having considered; देशकालौ (deśa-kālau) - place and time; व्ययागमौ (vyaya-āgamau) - expenditure and income; विमृश्य (vimṛśya) - having deliberated; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; च (ca) - and; धिया (dhiyā) - with intellect; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - doing; प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - wise person; न (na) - not; सीदति (sīdati) - falls into distress;]
(Having considered the union of capability, place and time, expenditure and income, having deliberated properly and with intellect, doing (so), the wise person does not fall into distress.)
A wise person, having properly considered capability, place and time, expenditure and income, and having deliberated with intellect, does not fall into distress. (2-12-23)
न हि यज्ञसमारम्भः केवलात्मविपत्तये। भवतीति समाज्ञाय यत्नतः कार्यमुद्वहन् ॥२-१२-२४॥
na hi yajñasamārambhaḥ kevalātmavipattaye। bhavatīti samājñāya yatnataḥ kāryamudvahan ॥2-12-24॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; यज्ञसमारम्भः (yajñasamārambhaḥ) - sacrifice-commencement; केवल (kevala) - only; आत्म (ātma) - self; विपत्तये (vipattaye) - for destruction; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; इति (iti) - thus; समाज्ञाय (samājñāya) - having understood; यत्नतः (yatnataḥ) - with effort; कार्य (kārya) - duty; उद्वहन् (udvahan) - carrying out;]
(Not indeed is the commencement of sacrifice only for the destruction of the self. Thus having understood, carrying out duty with effort.)
The commencement of sacrifice is certainly not meant solely for self-destruction. Understanding this, one should diligently perform one's duty. (2-12-24)
स निश्चयार्थं कार्यस्य कृष्णमेव जनार्दनम्। सर्वलोकात्परं मत्वा जगाम मनसा हरिम् ॥२-१२-२५॥
sa niścayārthaṃ kāryasya kṛṣṇam eva janārdanam। sarvalokāt paraṃ matvā jagāma manasā harim ॥2-12-25॥
[स (sa) - he; निश्चयार्थं (niścayārtham) - for the purpose of decision; कार्यस्य (kāryasya) - of the task; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; एव (eva) - indeed; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janārdana; सर्वलोकात् (sarvalokāt) - from all worlds; परम् (param) - supreme; मत्वा (matvā) - having considered; जगाम (jagāma) - went; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; हरिम् (harim) - to Hari;]
(He, for the purpose of decision of the task, Kṛṣṇa indeed, Janārdana, from all worlds the supreme having considered, went with the mind to Hari.)
He, having considered Kṛṣṇa, Janārdana, as the supreme above all worlds for the purpose of deciding the task, mentally approached Hari. (2-12-25)
अप्रमेयं महाबाहुं कामाज्जातमजं नृषु। पाण्डवस्तर्कयामास कर्मभिर्देवसंमितैः ॥२-१२-२६॥
aprameyaṃ mahābāhuṃ kāmājjātamajaṃ nṛṣu। pāṇḍavastarkayāmāsa karmabhirdevasammitaiḥ ॥2-12-26॥
[अप्रमेयं (aprameyam) - immeasurable; महाबाहुं (mahābāhum) - mighty-armed; कामात् (kāmāt) - from desire; जातम् (jātam) - born; अजम् (ajam) - unborn; नृषु (nṛṣu) - among men; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava; तर्कयामास (tarkayāmāsa) - considered; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; देवसंमितैः (devasammitaiḥ) - equal to the gods;]
(Immeasurable, mighty-armed, born from desire, unborn among men—the Pāṇḍava considered (him) by actions equal to the gods.)
The Pāṇḍava considered him, who is immeasurable, mighty-armed, born from desire yet unborn among men, as one whose actions are equal to the gods. (2-12-26)
नास्य किञ्चिदविज्ञातं नास्य किञ्चिदकर्मजम्। न स किञ्चिन्न विषहेदिति कृष्णममन्यत ॥२-१२-२७॥
nāsya kiñcid avijñātaṃ nāsya kiñcid akarmajam। na sa kiñcin na viṣahed iti kṛṣṇam amanyata ॥2-12-27॥
[न (na) - not; अस्य (asya) - of him; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अविज्ञातम् (avijñātam) - unknown; न (na) - not; अस्य (asya) - of him; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अकर्मजम् (akarmajam) - not produced by action; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; न (na) - not; विषहेत् (viṣahet) - would be able to endure; इति (iti) - thus; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - to Kṛṣṇa; अमन्यत (amanyata) - he thought;]
(Not for him anything unknown; not for him anything not produced by action. Not anything he would not be able to endure—thus he thought to Kṛṣṇa.)
There was nothing unknown to him, nor anything not produced by action. He thought that there was nothing Kṛṣṇa could not endure. (2-12-27)
स तु तां नैष्ठिकीं बुद्धिं कृत्वा पार्थो युधिष्ठिरः। गुरुवद्भूतगुरवे प्राहिणोद्दूतमञ्जसा ॥२-१२-२८॥
sa tu tāṃ naiṣṭhikīṃ buddhiṃ kṛtvā pārtho yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। guruvadbhūtagurave prāhiṇoddūtamañjasā ॥2-12-28॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; तां (tāṃ) - that; नैष्ठिकीं (naiṣṭhikīṃ) - firmly resolved; final; steadfast; बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - intention; resolve; mind; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; Arjuna; son of Pṛthā; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; गुरुवद्भूतगुरवे (guruvadbhūtagurave) - to the teacher who had become like a guru; to the one who was as a guru; प्राहिणोत् (prāhiṇot) - sent; दूतम् (dūtam) - messenger; अञ्जसा (añjasā) - directly; straightforwardly;]
(He but that firmly resolved intention having made, Pārtha Yudhiṣṭhira to the teacher who had become like a guru sent a messenger directly.)
But having made that firm resolve, Pārtha Yudhiṣṭhira sent a messenger directly to the teacher who had become like a guru. (2-12-28)
शीघ्रगेन रथेनाशु स दूतः प्राप्य यादवान्। द्वारकावासिनं कृष्णं द्वारवत्यां समासदत् ॥२-१२-२९॥
śīghragena rathenāśu sa dūtaḥ prāpya yādavān। dvārakāvāsinaṃ kṛṣṇaṃ dvāravatyāṃ samāsadat ॥2-12-29॥
[शीघ्रगेन (śīghragena) - by the swift-going; रथेन (rathena) - by the chariot; आशु (āśu) - quickly; स (sa) - he; दूतः (dūtaḥ) - the messenger; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; यादवान् (yādavān) - the Yādavas; द्वारकावासिनं (dvārakāvāsinaṃ) - the Dwārakā-dweller; कृष्णं (kṛṣṇaṃ) - Kṛṣṇa; द्वारवत्यां (dvāravatyāṃ) - in Dvāravatī; समासदत् (samāsadat) - approached;]
(By the swift-going chariot, quickly, he, the messenger, having reached the Yādavas, the Dwārakā-dweller Kṛṣṇa, in Dvāravatī, approached.)
The messenger, traveling quickly by a swift chariot, reached the Yādavas and approached Kṛṣṇa, the Dwārakā-dweller, in Dvāravatī. (2-12-29)
दर्शनाकाङ्क्षिणं पार्थं दर्शनाकाङ्क्षयाच्युतः। इन्द्रसेनेन सहित इन्द्रप्रस्थं ययौ तदा ॥२-१२-३०॥
darśanākāṅkṣiṇaṃ pārthaṃ darśanākāṅkṣayācyutaḥ। indrasenena sahita indraprasthaṃ yayau tadā ॥2-12-30॥
[दर्शन (darśana) - seeing; vision; आकाङ्क्षिणम् (ākāṅkṣiṇam) - desiring; wishing; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha; Arjuna; दर्शन (darśana) - seeing; vision; आकाङ्क्षया (ākāṅkṣayā) - with desire; with longing; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - Acyuta; Kṛṣṇa; इन्द्रसेनेन (indrasenena) - by Indrasena; सहित (sahita) - together; accompanied; इन्द्रप्रस्थम् (indraprastham) - Indraprastha; ययौ (yayau) - went; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time;]
(Desiring to see Pārtha, Acyuta, with longing for seeing, together with Indrasena, went to Indraprastha at that time.)
At that time, Acyuta, longing to see Pārtha, went to Indraprastha together with Indrasena. (2-12-30)
व्यतीत्य विविधान्देशांस्त्वरावान्क्षिप्रवाहनः। इन्द्रप्रस्थगतं पार्थमभ्यगच्छज्जनार्दनः ॥२-१२-३१॥
vyatītya vividhān deśāṃs tvarāvān kṣipravāhanaḥ। indraprasthagataṃ pārtham abhyagacchaj janārdanaḥ ॥2-12-31॥
[व्यतीत्य (vyatītya) - having crossed; विविधान् (vividhān) - various; देशान् (deśān) - regions; त्वरावान् (tvarāvān) - swift; क्षिप्रवाहनः (kṣipravāhanaḥ) - having a fast vehicle; इन्द्रप्रस्थगतं (indraprasthagataṃ) - gone to Indraprastha; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa);]
(Having crossed various regions, the swift one with a fast vehicle, Janārdana, approached Pārtha who had gone to Indraprastha.)
Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), swift and with a fast vehicle, crossed various regions and went to meet Pārtha (Arjuna) who was at Indraprastha. (2-12-31)
स गृहे भ्रातृवद्भ्रात्रा धर्मराजेन पूजितः। भीमेन च ततोऽपश्यत्स्वसारं प्रीतिमान्पितुः ॥२-१२-३२॥
sa gṛhe bhrātṛvadbhrātrā dharmarājena pūjitaḥ। bhīmena ca tato'paśyatsvasāraṃ prītimānpituḥ ॥2-12-32॥
[स (sa) - he; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; भ्रातृवत् (bhrātṛvat) - like a brother; भ्रात्रा (bhrātrā) - by the brother; धर्मराजेन (dharmarājena) - by Dharmarāja; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhīma; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; स्वसारम् (svasāram) - sister; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - affectionate; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father;]
(He, in the house, like a brother, by the brother, by Dharmarāja, honored, by Bhīma and then saw the sister, affectionate, of the father.)
He was honored in the house by Dharmarāja like a brother, and then the affectionate son of his father saw his sister, along with Bhīma. (2-12-32)
प्रीतः प्रियेण सुहृदा रेमे स सहितस्तदा। अर्जुनेन यमाभ्यां च गुरुवत्पर्युपस्थितः ॥२-१२-३३॥
prītaḥ priyeṇa suhṛdā reme sa sahitastadā। arjunena yamābhyāṃ ca guruvatparyupasthitaḥ ॥2-12-33॥
[प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; प्रियेण (priyeṇa) - by the beloved; सुहृदा (suhṛdā) - by the friend; रेमे (reme) - delighted; स (sa) - he; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; तदा (tadā) - then; अर्जुनेन (arjunena) - by Arjuna; यमाभ्यां (yamābhyāṃ) - by the two Yamas; च (ca) - and; गुरुवत् (guruvat) - like a teacher; पर्युपस्थितः (paryupasthitaḥ) - attended;]
(Pleased by the beloved friend, he delighted together then, attended by Arjuna, the two Yamas, and like a teacher.)
He, pleased by his beloved friend, delighted in their company at that time, attended by Arjuna and the two Yamas, as if he were a teacher. (2-12-33)
तं विश्रान्तं शुभे देशे क्षणिनं कल्यमच्युतम्। धर्मराजः समागम्य ज्ञापयत्स्वं प्रयोजनम् ॥२-१२-३४॥
taṃ viśrāntaṃ śubhe deśe kṣaṇinaṃ kalyamacyutam। dharmarājaḥ samāgamya jñāpayatsvaṃ prayojanam ॥2-12-34॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; विश्रान्तं (viśrāntam) - rested; शुभे (śubhe) - auspicious; देशे (deśe) - place; क्षणिनं (kṣaṇinam) - for a moment; कल्यम् (kalyam) - well; अच्युतम् (acyutam) - Acyuta; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmaraja; समागम्य (samāgamya) - having approached; ज्ञापयत् (jñāpayat) - informed; स्वं (svaṃ) - his own; प्रयोजनम् (prayojanam) - purpose;]
(Him, having rested in the auspicious place for a moment, well, Acyuta; Dharmaraja, having approached, informed his own purpose.)
When Acyuta had rested for a moment in the auspicious place, Dharmaraja approached and informed him of his purpose. (2-12-34)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

Yudhiṣṭhira said.
प्रार्थितो राजसूयो मे न चासौ केवलेप्सया। प्राप्यते येन तत्ते ह विदितं कृष्ण सर्वशः ॥२-१२-३५॥
prārthito rājasūyo me na cāsau kevalepsayā। prāpyate yena tatte ha viditaṃ kṛṣṇa sarvaśaḥ ॥2-12-35॥
[प्रार्थितः (prārthitaḥ) - requested; राजसूयः (rājasūyaḥ) - Rājasūya sacrifice; मे (me) - by me; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; असौ (asau) - that; केवल-इप्सया (kevala-ipsayā) - with mere desire; प्राप्यते (prāpyate) - is attained; येन (yena) - by which; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - to you; ह (ha) - indeed; विदितम् (viditam) - known; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way;]
(The Rājasūya sacrifice was requested by me, not with mere desire for it. That by which it is attained, that indeed is known to you, O Kṛṣṇa, in every way.)
I requested the Rājasūya sacrifice, not out of mere desire. O Kṛṣṇa, you know in every way by what means it is attained. (2-12-35)
यस्मिन्सर्वं सम्भवति यश्च सर्वत्र पूज्यते। यश्च सर्वेश्वरो राजा राजसूयं स विन्दति ॥२-१२-३६॥
yasmin sarvaṃ sambhavati yaś ca sarvatra pūjyate। yaś ca sarveśvaro rājā rājasūyaṃ sa vindati॥2-12-36॥
[यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in whom; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; सम्भवति (sambhavati) - arises; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; पूज्यते (pūjyate) - is worshipped; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; सर्वेश्वरः (sarveśvaraḥ) - the lord of all; राजा (rājā) - king; राजसूयम् (rājasūyam) - Rājasūya (royal consecration); सः (saḥ) - he; विन्दति (vindati) - obtains;]
(In whom all arises, and who is worshipped everywhere; and who, being the lord of all, the king, obtains the Rājasūya (royal consecration).)
He in whom everything arises, who is worshipped everywhere, and who, as the lord of all and king, attains the Rājasūya consecration. (2-12-36)
तं राजसूयं सुहृदः कार्यमाहुः समेत्य मे। तत्र मे निश्चिततमं तव कृष्ण गिरा भवेत् ॥२-१२-३७॥
taṃ rājasūyaṃ suhṛdaḥ kāryam āhuḥ sametya me. tatra me niśchitatamaṃ tava kṛṣṇa girā bhavet. ॥2-12-37॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; राजसूयं (rājasūyaṃ) - Rājasūya sacrifice; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; आहुः (āhuḥ) - say; समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled; मे (me) - to me; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - to me; निश्चिततमं (niśchitatamam) - most certain; तव (tava) - your; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; गिरा (girā) - by speech; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be;]
(Him, the Rājasūya sacrifice, friends say is to be done, having assembled, to me. There, to me, the most certain may be by your speech, O Kṛṣṇa.)
My friends, having assembled, say that the Rājasūya sacrifice should be performed by him. In this matter, O Kṛṣṇa, let your words be the most decisive for me. (2-12-37)
केचिद्धि सौहृदादेव दोषं न परिचक्षते। अर्थहेतोस्तथैवान्ये प्रियमेव वदन्त्युत ॥२-१२-३८॥
keciddhi sauhṛdādeva doṣaṃ na paricakṣate। arthaphetostathaivānye priyameva vadantyuta ॥2-12-38॥
[केचित् (kecit) - some; हि (hi) - indeed; सौहृदात् (sauhṛdāt) - from friendship; एव (eva) - only; दोषम् (doṣam) - fault; न (na) - not; परिचक्षते (paricakṣate) - perceive; अर्थहेतोः (arthahetoḥ) - for the sake of gain; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; एव (eva) - only; अन्ये (anye) - others; प्रियम् (priyam) - pleasant; एव (eva) - only; वदन्ति (vadanti) - speak; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Some indeed, only from friendship, do not perceive fault; for the sake of gain, in the same way, others only speak what is pleasant, indeed.)
Some, out of friendship, do not see any fault; others, for the sake of gain, likewise speak only what is pleasant. (2-12-38)
प्रियमेव परीप्सन्ते केचिदात्मनि यद्धितम्। एवम्प्रायाश्च दृश्यन्ते जनवादाः प्रयोजने ॥२-१२-३९॥
priyam eva parīpsante kecid ātmani yad dhitam। evam-prāyāś ca dṛśyante janavādāḥ prayojane ॥2-12-39॥
[प्रियम् (priyam) - dear; pleasant; beloved; एव (eva) - indeed; only; just; परीप्सन्ते (parīpsante) - desire to obtain; wish to acquire; केचित् (kecit) - some; certain people; आत्मनि (ātmani) - in oneself; in the self; यत् (yat) - which; that which; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; good; advantageous; एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; प्रायाः (prāyāḥ) - generally; mostly; च (ca) - and; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; are observed; जनवादाः (janavādāḥ) - public opinions; people's talk; प्रयोजने (prayojane) - in purpose; in utility;]
(Indeed, some desire to obtain only what is dear and beneficial to themselves; thus, generally, public opinions are seen in purpose.)
Some people seek only what is dear and beneficial to themselves; thus, public opinions are generally observed to be based on self-interest. (2-12-39)
त्वं तु हेतूनतीत्यैतान्कामक्रोधौ व्यतीत्य च। परमं नः क्षमं लोके यथावद्वक्तुमर्हसि ॥२-१२-४०॥
tvaṃ tu hetūnatītyaitānkāmakrodhau vyatītya ca। paramaṃ naḥ kṣamaṃ loke yathāvad vaktum arhasi ॥2-12-40॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; तु (tu) - but; हेतून् (hetūn) - causes; अतीत्य (atītya) - having surpassed; एतान् (etān) - these; काम (kāma) - desire; क्रोधौ (krodhau) - and anger; व्यतीत्य (vyatītya) - having overcome; च (ca) - and; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; नः (naḥ) - for us; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - proper; लोके (loke) - in the world; यथावत् (yathāvat) - as it is; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you are worthy;]
(You, however, having surpassed these causes and having overcome desire and anger, are worthy to speak to us in the world what is supremely proper, as it is.)
But you, having transcended these causes and having overcome desire and anger, are truly worthy to tell us in this world what is supremely proper, as it is. (2-12-40)
