पार्थः प्राप्य धनुःश्रेष्ठमक्षय्यौ च महेषुधी। रथं ध्वजं सभां चैव युधिष्ठिरमभाषत ॥२-२३-१॥
pārthaḥ prāpya dhanuḥśreṣṭham-akṣayyau ca maheṣudhī। rathaṃ dhvajaṃ sabhāṃ caiva yudhiṣṭhiram-abhāṣata ॥2-23-1॥
[पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - son of Pṛthā (Arjuna); प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; धनुःश्रेष्ठम् (dhanuḥśreṣṭham) - the best bow; अक्षय्यौ (akṣayyau) - the inexhaustible (quivers); च (ca) - and; महेषुधी (maheṣudhī) - great arrows; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; ध्वजम् (dhvajam) - banner; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly hall; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - addressed;]
(Pārtha, having obtained the best bow, the inexhaustible (quivers), and great arrows, the chariot, the banner, and the assembly hall indeed, addressed Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Arjuna, having acquired the best bow, inexhaustible quivers, and great arrows, as well as the chariot, banner, and assembly hall, spoke to Yudhiṣṭhira. (2-23-1)
धनुरस्त्रं शरा वीर्यं पक्षो भूमिर्यशो बलम्। प्राप्तमेतन्मया राजन्दुष्प्रापं यदभीप्सितम् ॥२-२३-२॥
dhanurastraṃ śarā vīryaṃ pakṣo bhūmiryaśo balam। prāptametanmayā rājan duṣprāpaṃ yadabhīpsitam ॥2-23-2॥
[धनु (dhanu) - bow; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - missile; शराः (śarāḥ) - arrows; वीर्यं (vīryam) - strength; पक्षः (pakṣaḥ) - wing; side; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - earth; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; बलम् (balam) - power; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - obtained; एतत् (etat) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दुष्प्रापम् (duṣprāpam) - difficult to obtain; यत् (yat) - which; अभीप्सितम् (abhīpsitam) - desired;]
(Bow, missile, arrows, strength, wing, earth, fame, power—this, which was difficult to obtain and desired, O king, has been obtained by me.)
O king, I have obtained the bow, missile, arrows, strength, side, earth, fame, and power—everything that was difficult to obtain and desired.
तत्र कृत्यमहं मन्ये कोशस्यास्य विवर्धनम्। करमाहारयिष्यामि राज्ञः सर्वान्नृपोत्तम ॥२-२३-३॥
tatra kṛtyam ahaṃ manye kośasya asya vivardhanam। karam āhārayiṣyāmi rājñaḥ sarvān nṛpottama ॥2-23-3॥

(There, I think the duty is the increase of this treasury. I shall collect tax for the king from all, O best of kings.)

विजयाय प्रयास्यामि दिशं धनदरक्षिताम्। तिथावथ मुहूर्ते च नक्षत्रे च तथा शिवे ॥२-२३-४॥
vijayāya prayāsyāmi diśaṃ dhanadarakṣitām। tithāvatha muhūrte ca nakṣatre ca tathā śive ॥2-23-4॥
[विजयाय (vijayāya) - for victory; प्रयास्यामि (prayāsyāmi) - I shall proceed; दिशं (diśam) - direction; धनदरक्षिताम् (dhanadarakṣitām) - protected by Dhanada (Kubera); तिथौ (tithau) - on the lunar day; अथ (atha) - then; मुहूर्ते (muhūrte) - at the auspicious moment; च (ca) - and; नक्षत्रे (nakṣatre) - in the constellation; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - also; शिवे (śive) - in the auspicious (time);]
(For victory, I shall proceed to the direction protected by Dhanada (Kubera); on the lunar day, then at the auspicious moment, and in the constellation, and also in the auspicious (time).)
I will set out for victory towards the direction guarded by Dhanada (Kubera), choosing an auspicious lunar day, moment, and constellation, and also at a favorable time. (2-23-4)
धनञ्जयवचः श्रुत्वा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। स्निग्धगम्भीरनादिन्या तं गिरा प्रत्यभाषत ॥२-२३-५॥
dhanañjayavacaḥ śrutvā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। snigdhagambhīranādinyā taṃ girā pratyabhāṣata ॥2-23-5॥

(Having heard the speech of Arjuna, the king of dharma, Yudhishthira, with a gentle, deep, resounding voice, replied to him.)
Hearing Arjuna's words, Yudhishthira, the king of dharma, replied to him in a gentle and deep, resonant voice. (2-23-5)
स्वस्ति वाच्यार्हतो विप्रान्प्रयाहि भरतर्षभ। दुर्हृदामप्रहर्षाय सुहृदां नन्दनाय च ॥ विजयस्ते ध्रुवं पार्थ प्रियं काममवाप्नुहि ॥२-२३-६॥

(Well-being should be spoken to the deserving brāhmaṇas; go forth, O bull among the Bharatas, not for the delight of the ill-hearted, but for the rejoicing of the well-wishers. Victory is certain for you, O Pārtha; attain your dear desire.)
Offer blessings to the worthy brāhmaṇas and proceed, O best of the Bharatas, not for the joy of the wicked but for the happiness of friends. Victory is assured for you, O Pārtha; may you attain your cherished desire. (2-23-6)
इत्युक्तः प्रययौ पार्थः सैन्येन महता वृतः। अग्निदत्तेन दिव्येन रथेनाद्भुतकर्मणा ॥२-२३-७॥

(Thus having been addressed, Pārtha (Arjuna) departed, surrounded by the great army, by the divine chariot given by Agni, of wondrous deeds.)
Thus addressed, Pārtha (Arjuna) set out, surrounded by the great army, riding the divine chariot given by Agni, renowned for its wondrous deeds. (2-23-7)
तथैव भीमसेनोऽपि यमौ च पुरुषर्षभौ। ससैन्याः प्रययुः सर्वे धर्मराजाभिपूजिताः ॥२-२३-८॥
tathaiva bhīmaseno'pi yamau ca puruṣarṣabhau। sasainyāḥ prayayuḥ sarve dharmarājābhipūjitāḥ ॥2-23-8॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; अपि (api) - also; यमौ (yamau) - the two sons of Yama (Nakula and Sahadeva); च (ca) - and; पुरुषर्षभौ (puruṣarṣabhau) - bulls among men; ससैन्याः (sasainyāḥ) - with their armies; प्रययुः (prayayūḥ) - set out; सर्वे (sarve) - all; धर्मराज (dharmarāja) - Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira); अभिपूजिताः (abhipūjitāḥ) - having been honored by;]
(In the same manner, Bhīmasena also, and the two sons of Yama (Nakula and Sahadeva), bulls among men, all with their armies, set out, having been honored by Dharmarāja.)
Likewise, Bhīmasena, as well as Nakula and Sahadeva, the foremost among men, all with their armies, departed after being honored by Dharmarāja. (2-23-8)
दिशं धनपतेरिष्टामजयत्पाकशासनिः। भीमसेनस्तथा प्राचीं सहदेवस्तु दक्षिणाम् ॥२-२३-९॥
diśaṃ dhanapater iṣṭām ajayat pākāśāsaniḥ। bhīmasenas tathā prācīṃ sahadevas tu dakṣiṇām ॥2-23-9॥
[दिशम् (diśam) - direction; (accusative singular) धनपतेः (dhanapateḥ) - of the lord of wealth; (genitive singular) इष्टाम् (iṣṭām) - desired; (accusative singular feminine) अजयत् (ajayat) - conquered; पाकशासनिः (pākāśāsaniḥ) - the subduer of Pāka (Indra); भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; तथा (tathā) - likewise; प्राचीम् (prācīm) - eastern; (accusative singular feminine) सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; तु (tu) - but; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - southern; (accusative singular feminine);]
(The subduer of Pāka (Indra) conquered the desired direction of the lord of wealth. Likewise, Bhīmasena (conquered) the eastern (direction), but Sahadeva (conquered) the southern (direction).)
Indra conquered the direction desired by Kubera. Likewise, Bhīmasena conquered the east, and Sahadeva conquered the south. (2-23-9)
प्रतीचीं नकुलो राजन्दिशं व्यजयदस्त्रवित्। खाण्डवप्रस्थमध्यास्ते धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥२-२३-१०॥
pratīcīṃ nakulo rājan diśaṃ vyajayad astravit | khāṇḍavaprastham adhyāste dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥2-23-10॥
[प्रतीचीं (pratīcīṃ) - towards the west; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; व्यजयत् (vyajayat) - conquered; अस्त्रवित् (astravit) - skilled in weapons; खाण्डवप्रस्थम् (khāṇḍavaprastham) - Khandavaprastha; अध्यास्ते (adhyāste) - resides; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmaraja; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(Towards the west, Nakula, O king, the direction conquered, skilled in weapons; at Khandavaprastha resides Dharmaraja Yudhishthira.)
Nakula, skilled in weapons, conquered the western direction, O king; Dharmaraja Yudhishthira resides at Khandavaprastha. (2-23-10)

diśām abhijayaṃ brahman vistareṇānukīrtaya। na hi tṛpyāmi pūrveṣāṃ śṛṇvānaś caritaṃ mahat ॥2-23-11॥
[दिशाम् (diśām) - of the directions; अभिजयम् (abhijayam) - conquest; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; विस्तरेण (vistareṇa) - in detail; अनुकीर्तय (anukīrtaya) - narrate; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; तृप्यामि (tṛpyāmi) - I am satisfied; पूर्वेषाम् (pūrveṣām) - of the ancients; शृण्वानः (śṛṇvānaḥ) - hearing; चरितम् (caritam) - deeds; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(O Brāhmaṇa, narrate in detail the conquest of the directions. Indeed, I am not satisfied hearing the great deeds of the ancients.)

I will tell you beforehand of Dhananjaya's victory. This earth has indeed been conquered simultaneously by the sons of Pritha. (2-23-12)
पूर्वं कुणिन्दविषये वशे चक्रे महीपतीन्। धनञ्जयो महाबाहुर्नातितीव्रेण कर्मणा ॥२-२३-१३॥
pūrvaṃ kuṇindaviṣaye vaśe cakre mahīpatīn। dhanañjayo mahābāhur nātitīvreṇa karmaṇā ॥2-23-13॥
[पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - formerly; कुणिन्दविषये (kuṇindaviṣaye) - in the territory of the Kuṇindas; वशे (vaśe) - under control; चक्रे (cakre) - made; महीपतीन् (mahīpatīn) - kings; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; न (na) - not; अतितीव्रेण (atitīvreṇa) - with excessive force; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action;]
(Formerly, in the territory of the Kuṇindas, Dhanañjaya (the mighty-armed) made the kings come under control, not by excessive force, but by action.)
In earlier times, Dhanañjaya, the mighty-armed, brought the kings of the Kuṇinda territory under his control, not by excessive force, but through his actions. (2-23-13)
आनर्तान्कालकूटांश्च कुणिन्दांश्च विजित्य सः। सुमण्डलं पापजितं कृतवाननुसैनिकम् ॥२-२३-१४॥
ānartān kālakūṭāṁś ca kuṇindāṁś ca vijitya saḥ। sumaṇḍalaṁ pāpajitaṁ kṛtavān anusaīnikam ॥2-23-14॥
[आनर्तान् (ānartān) - the Ānarta people; कालकूटान् (kālakūṭān) - the Kālakūṭa people; च (ca) - and; कुणिन्दान् (kuṇindān) - the Kuṇinda people; च (ca) - and; विजित्य (vijitya) - having conquered; सः (saḥ) - he; सुमण्डलम् (sumaṇḍalam) - the good circle (realm); पापजितम् (pāpajitam) - conquered by Pāpa; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - made; अनुसैनिकम् (anusaīnikam) - with followers (soldiers);]
(Having conquered the Ānartas, Kālakūṭas, and Kuṇindas, he made the good realm, conquered by Pāpa, with followers (soldiers).)
After conquering the Ānartas, Kālakūṭas, and Kuṇindas, he established the prosperous region, previously subdued by Pāpa, along with his army. (2-23-14)
स तेन सहितो राजन्सव्यसाची परन्तपः। विजिग्ये सकलं द्वीपं प्रतिविन्ध्यं च पार्थिवम् ॥२-२३-१५॥
sa tena sahito rājan savyasācī parantapaḥ। vijigye sakalaṃ dvīpaṃ prativindhyaṃ ca pārthivam ॥2-23-15॥

(He, accompanied by him, O king, Savyasācī, the scorcher of foes, conquered all the islands and the Prativindhya kingdom.)

सकलद्वीपवासांश्च सप्तद्वीपे च ये नृपाः। अर्जुनस्य च सैन्यानां विग्रहस्तुमुलोऽभवत् ॥२-२३-१६॥
sakaladvīpavāsāṃś ca saptadvīpe ca ye nṛpāḥ। arjunasya ca sainyānāṃ vigrahastumulo'bhavat ॥2-23-16॥

(All the inhabitants of the islands and the kings in the seven islands, and of Arjuna, and of the armies, a tumultuous conflict arose.)
A tumultuous conflict arose among all the islanders and the kings of the seven islands, as well as among Arjuna's armies. (2-23-16)
स तानपि महेष्वासो विजित्य भरतर्षभ। तैरेव सहितः सर्वैः प्राग्ज्योतिषमुपाद्रवत् ॥२-२३-१७॥
sa tān api maheṣvāso vijitya bharatarṣabha. tair eva sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ prāgjyotiṣam upādravat ॥2-23-17॥

तत्र राजा महानासीद्भगदत्तो विशां पते। तेनासीत्सुमहद्युद्धं पाण्डवस्य महात्मनः ॥२-२३-१८॥

स किरातैश्च चीनैश्च वृतः प्राग्ज्योतिषोऽभवत्। अन्यैश्च बहुभिर्योधैः सागरानूपवासिभिः ॥२-२३-१९॥

(Befitting, O mighty-armed, in you, O delight of the Pāṇḍavas, O heir of Indra (slayer of Pāka), heroism, O one who shines in battle.)
O mighty-armed one, heroism is fitting in you, O delight of the Pāṇḍavas, O heir of Indra, O one who shines in battle. (2-23-21)
अहं सखा सुरेन्द्रस्य शक्रादनवमो रणे। न च शक्नोमि ते तात स्थातुं प्रमुखतो युधि ॥२-२३-२२॥
ahaṃ sakhā surendrasya śakrādanavamo raṇe। na ca śaknomi te tāta sthātuṃ pramukhato yudhi ॥2-23-22॥

(I friend of the lord of the gods not inferior to Śakra in battle, and not am able, dear one, to stand in front of you in battle.)
I am the friend of the lord of the gods, not inferior to Śakra (Indra) in battle, yet, dear one, I am unable to stand before you in battle. (2-23-22)
किमीप्सितं पाण्डवेय ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते। यद्वक्ष्यसि महाबाहो तत्करिष्यामि पुत्रक ॥२-२३-२३॥
kimīpsitaṃ pāṇḍaveya brūhi kiṃ karavāṇi te। yadvakṣyasi mahābāho tatkariṣyāmi putraka ॥2-23-23॥

(What is desired, O son of Pāṇḍu, speak; what shall I do for you? Whatever you will say, O mighty-armed, that I shall do, O dear son.)
Tell me, O son of Pāṇḍu, what you desire; what shall I do for you? Whatever you say, O mighty-armed one, that I shall do, dear son. (2-23-23)

(Of the Kurus, the bull, the king, the son of Dharma, Yudhishthira; his kingship I desire; let tribute be given to him.)
Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma and the foremost among the Kurus, is the king; I desire his sovereignty; let tribute be paid to him. (2-23-24)
भवान्पितृसखा चैव प्रीयमाणो मयापि च। ततो नाज्ञापयामि त्वां प्रीतिपूर्वं प्रदीयताम् ॥२-२३-२५॥
bhavān pitṛsakhā caiva prīyamāṇo mayāpi ca। tato nājñāpayāmi tvāṃ prītipūrvaṃ pradīyatām ॥2-23-25॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you; (honorific); पितृसखा (pitṛsakhā) - friend of my father; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रीयमाणः (prīyamāṇaḥ) - being dear; मया (mayā) - by me; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; न (na) - not; आज्ञापयामि (ājñāpayāmi) - I command; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; प्रीतिपूर्वम् (prītipūrvam) - with affection; प्रदीयताम् (pradīyatām) - let it be given;]
(You, the friend of my father and indeed dear to me also; therefore, I do not command you; let it be given with affection.)

kuntīmātar yathā me tvaṃ tathā rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। sarvam etat kariṣyāmi kiṃ ca anyat karavāṇi te ॥2-23-26॥
[कुन्तीमातर् (kuntīmātar) - O mother Kuntī; यथा (yathā) - just as; मे (me) - to me; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तथा (tathā) - so; राजा (rājā) - the king; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; किम् (kim) - what; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - else; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - shall I do; ते (te) - for you;]
(O mother Kuntī, just as you (say) to me, so the king Yudhiṣṭhira (says). All this I shall do. What else shall I do for you?)
O mother Kuntī, as you instruct me and as King Yudhiṣṭhira commands, I will do all this. What else can I do for you? (2-23-26)
