Pancharatra: Killing Jarasandha, Krishna sets free the imprisoned kings.

bhīmasenastataḥ kṛṣṇamuvāca yadunandanam। buddhimāsthāya vipulāṃ jarāsandhajighāṃsayā ॥2-22-1॥
[भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - to Kṛṣṇa; उवाच (uvāca) - said; यदुनन्दनम् (yadunandanam) - O descendant of Yadu; बुद्धिम् (buddhim) - intellect; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having assumed; विपुलाम् (vipulām) - great; जरासन्धजिघांसया (jarāsandhajighāṃsayā) - with the intention to destroy Jarāsandha;]
(Bhīmasena then said to Kṛṣṇa, O descendant of Yadu, having assumed great intellect with the intention to destroy Jarāsandha.)
Then Bhīmasena, having assumed great intelligence with the intention of destroying Jarāsandha, spoke to Kṛṣṇa, O descendant of Yadu. (2-22-1)
नायं पापो मया कृष्ण युक्तः स्यादनुरोधितुम्। प्राणेन यदुशार्दूल बद्धवङ्क्षणवाससा ॥२-२२-२॥
nāyaṃ pāpo mayā kṛṣṇa yuktaḥ syād anurodhitum। prāṇena yaduśārdūla baddhavaṅkṣaṇavāsasā ॥2-22-2॥
[न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; पापः (pāpaḥ) - sinful; मया (mayā) - by me; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; अनुरोधितुम् (anurodhitum) - to comply; प्राणेन (prāṇena) - with life; यदुशार्दूल (yaduśārdūla) - O tiger among the Yadus; बद्ध (baddha) - bound; वङ्क्षण (vaṅkṣaṇa) - loins; वाससा (vāsasā) - with garment;]
(Not this sinful by me, O Kṛṣṇa, engaged would be to comply. With life, O tiger among the Yadus, bound with garment at the loins.)
O Kṛṣṇa, I am not the sinful one who would comply in this way. O tiger among the Yadus, my life is bound with a garment at the loins. (2-22-2)
एवमुक्तस्ततः कृष्णः प्रत्युवाच वृकोदरम्। त्वरयन्पुरुषव्याघ्रो जरासन्धवधेप्सया ॥२-२२-३॥

[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; वृकोदरम् (vṛkodaram) - to Vṛkodara; त्वरयन् (tvarayan) - urging; पुरुषव्याघ्रः (puruṣa-vyāghraḥ) - tiger among men; जरासन्धवधेप्सया (jarāsandha-vadhepsayā) - with the desire to kill Jarāsandha;]
(Thus having been spoken, then Kṛṣṇa replied to Vṛkodara, urging, the tiger among men, with the desire to kill Jarāsandha.)
When these words were spoken, Kṛṣṇa, the tiger among men, urged Vṛkodara with the desire to slay Jarāsandha. (2-22-3)
यत्ते दैवं परं सत्त्वं यच्च ते मातरिश्वनः। बलं भीम जरासन्धे दर्शयाशु तदद्य नः ॥२-२२-४॥
yat te daivaṃ paraṃ sattvaṃ yac ca te mātariśvanaḥ। balaṃ bhīma jarāsandhe darśayāśu tad adya naḥ ॥2-22-4॥

(Which supreme divine strength is yours, and which power of Mātariśvan is yours, O Bhīma, show that quickly today in Jarāsandha for us.)
O Bhīma, whatever supreme divine strength you possess, and whatever power of the Wind-god is in you, display that quickly today for us in Jarāsandha. (2-22-4)
एवमुक्तस्तदा भीमो जरासन्धमरिंदमः। उत्क्षिप्य भ्रामयद्राजन्बलवन्तं महाबलः ॥२-२२-५॥

(Thus having been spoken, then Bhima, the destroyer of enemies, having lifted up Jarāsandha, O king, the mighty one caused the strong one to whirl.)
Thus addressed, Bhima, the destroyer of enemies, then lifted up Jarasandha and, O king, the mighty Bhima whirled the strong Jarasandha around. (2-22-5)
भ्रामयित्वा शतगुणं भुजाभ्यां भरतर्षभ। बभञ्ज पृष्ठे सङ्क्षिप्य निष्पिष्य विननाद च ॥२-२२-६॥
bhrāmayitvā śataguṇaṃ bhujābhyāṃ bharatarṣabha। babhañja pṛṣṭhe saṅkṣipya niṣpiṣya vinanāda ca ॥2-22-6॥

O mighty Bharata, having whirled it a hundred times with his arms, he broke it on his back, contracting and crushing it, and then he roared. (2-22-6)
तस्य निष्पिष्यमाणस्य पाण्डवस्य च गर्जतः। अभवत्तुमुलो नादः सर्वप्राणिभयङ्करः ॥२-२२-७॥
tasya niṣpiṣyamāṇasya pāṇḍavasya ca garjataḥ। abhavat tumulo nādaḥ sarvapraṇibhayaṅkaraḥ ॥2-22-7॥

As he was being crushed and the Pāṇḍava roared, a tumultuous sound arose, terrifying to all beings. (2-22-7)
वित्रेसुर्मागधाः सर्वे स्त्रीणां गर्भाश्च सुस्रुवुः। भीमसेनस्य नादेन जरासन्धस्य चैव ह ॥२-२२-८॥
vitresurmāgadhāḥ sarve strīṇāṃ garbhāś ca susruvuḥ। bhīmasenasya nādena jarāsandhasya caiva ha ॥2-22-8॥
[वित्रेसुः (vitresuḥ) - were terrified; मागधाः (māgadhāḥ) - the Māgadhas; सर्वे (sarve) - all; स्त्रीणाम् (strīṇām) - of women; गर्भाः (garbhāḥ) - fetuses; च (ca) - and; सुस्रुवुः (susruvuḥ) - flowed out; भीमसेनस्य (bhīmasenasya) - of Bhīmasena; नादेन (nādena) - by the sound; जरासन्धस्य (jarāsandhasya) - of Jarāsandha; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - certainly;]
(The Māgadhas were terrified, and all the fetuses of women flowed out, by the sound of Bhīmasena and indeed of Jarāsandha, certainly.)

किं नु स्विद्धिमवान्भिन्नः किं नु स्विद्दीर्यते मही। इति स्म मागधा जज्ञुर्भीमसेनस्य निस्वनात् ॥२-२२-९॥

(What indeed, perhaps, possessing intellect, is broken? What indeed, perhaps, is the earth being torn? Thus indeed the Magadhas thought from the sound of Bhīmasena.)
"What is that? Has something intelligent been broken? Is the earth being torn apart?" Thus the Magadhas wondered, hearing the sound of Bhīmasena. (2-22-9)
ततो राजकुलद्वारि प्रसुप्तमिव तं नृपम्। रात्रौ परासुमुत्सृज्य निश्चक्रमुररिंदमाः ॥२-२२-१०॥
tato rājakuladvāri prasuptamiva taṃ nṛpam। rātrau parāsum utsṛjya niścakramur ariṃdamāḥ ॥2-22-10॥

जरासन्धरथं कृष्णो योजयित्वा पताकिनम्। आरोप्य भ्रातरौ चैव मोक्षयामास बान्धवान् ॥२-२२-११॥

ते वै रत्नभुजं कृष्णं रत्नार्हं पृथिवीश्वराः। राजानश्चक्रुरासाद्य मोक्षिता महतो भयात् ॥२-२२-१२॥
te vai ratnabhujam kṛṣṇam ratnārhaṃ pṛthivīśvarāḥ। rājānaścakrurāsādya mokṣitā mahato bhayāt ॥2-22-12॥

(They indeed, the lords of the earth, having approached the jewel-armed, Kṛṣṇa, worthy of jewels, the kings did (make), liberated from great fear.)

अक्षतः शस्त्रसम्पन्नो जितारिः सह राजभिः। रथमास्थाय तं दिव्यं निर्जगाम गिरिव्रजात् ॥२-२२-१३॥

Those foremost among men rejoiced upon obtaining the chariot by which Indra had slain ninety-nine Dānavas. (2-22-18)

(Then, Kṛṣṇa, the mighty-armed, accompanied by his brothers, at that time, standing on the chariot, the Magadhas, having seen, became astonished.)

(The chariot, joined by divine horses, equal to the wind in speed, mounted, he shone exceedingly by Kṛṣṇa, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, the chariot, yoked with divine horses and as swift as the wind, mounted by Kṛṣṇa, shone exceedingly. (2-22-20)
असङ्गी देवविहितस्तस्मिन्रथवरे ध्वजः। योजनाद्ददृशे श्रीमानिन्द्रायुधसमप्रभः ॥२-२२-२१॥
asaṅgī devavihitastasmin rathavare dhvajaḥ। yojanāddadṛśe śrīmān indrāyudhasamaprabhaḥ ॥2-22-21॥

(Unattached, divinely ordained, on that excellent chariot, the banner; from a yojana (distance), was seen, splendid, having a brilliance equal to Indra's bow (rainbow).)
On that excellent chariot, there was an unattached, divinely ordained banner, splendid and radiant like Indra's bow, which could be seen from a yojana away. (2-22-21)
चिन्तयामास कृष्णोऽथ गरुत्मन्तं स चाभ्ययात्। क्षणे तस्मिन्स तेनासीच्चैत्ययूप इवोच्छ्रितः ॥२-२२-२२॥
cintayāmāsa kṛṣṇo'tha garutmantaṃ sa cābhyayāt। kṣaṇe tasmins tenāsīccaityayūpa ivochritaḥ ॥2-22-22॥

(He thought, Kṛṣṇa then (of) Garutmant; he also approached. In that moment, he by him became like a sacrificial post, as if erected.)
Kṛṣṇa then thought of Garutmant (Garuḍa); he too approached. In that moment, by him, he became like a sacrificial post, raised high, as if (it were so). (2-22-22)
व्यादितास्यैर्महानादैः सह भूतैर्ध्वजालयैः। तस्थौ रथवरे तस्मिन्गरुत्मान्पन्नगाशनः ॥२-२२-२३॥

दुर्निरीक्ष्यो हि भूतानां तेजसाभ्यधिकं बभौ। आदित्य इव मध्याह्ने सहस्रकिरणावृतः ॥२-२२-२४॥
durnirīkṣyo hi bhūtānāṃ tejasābhyadhikaṃ babhau। āditya iva madhyāhne sahasrakiraṇāvṛtaḥ ॥2-22-24॥

(He shone, difficult to behold indeed for beings, exceeding in brilliance, like the sun at midday enveloped by a thousand rays.)
He shone with brilliance surpassing that of all beings, difficult for anyone to look at, like the midday sun surrounded by a thousand rays. (2-22-24)
न स सज्जति वृक्षेषु शस्त्रैश्चापि न रिष्यते। दिव्यो ध्वजवरो राजन्दृश्यते देवमानुषैः ॥२-२२-२५॥
na sa sajjati vṛkṣeṣu śastraiś cāpi na riṣyate। divyo dhvajavaro rājan dṛśyate deva-mānuṣaiḥ ॥2-22-25॥

तमास्थाय रथं दिव्यं पर्जन्यसमनिस्वनम्। निर्ययौ पुरुषव्याघ्रः पाण्डवाभ्यां सहाच्युतः ॥२-२२-२६॥
tam āsthāya rathaṃ divyaṃ parjanya-samanisvanam। niryayau puruṣavyāghraḥ pāṇḍavābhyāṃ sahācyutaḥ ॥2-22-26॥

यं लेभे वासवाद्राजा वसुस्तस्माद्बृहद्रथः। बृहद्रथात्क्रमेणैव प्राप्तो बार्हद्रथं नृपम् ॥२-२२-२७॥

The king Vasu obtained him from Vāsava; from Vasu came Bṛhadratha, and from Bṛhadratha, in due succession, the kingship reached Bārhadratha. (2-22-27)
स निर्ययौ महाबाहुः पुण्डरीकेक्षणस्ततः। गिरिव्रजाद्बहिस्तस्थौ समे देशे महायशाः ॥२-२२-२८॥
sa niryyayau mahābāhuḥ puṇḍarīkeṣaṇas tataḥ। girivrajād bahis tasthau same deśe mahāyaśāḥ ॥2-22-28॥

(He, the mighty-armed, lotus-eyed, then departed; from Girivraja, outside, stood in a level place, greatly renowned.)
Then he, the mighty-armed and lotus-eyed, departed from Girivraja and stood outside in a level place, renowned for his great fame. (2-22-28)
तत्रैनं नागराः सर्वे सत्कारेणाभ्ययुस्तदा। ब्राह्मणप्रमुखा राजन्विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥२-२२-२९॥
tatrai naṃ nāgarāḥ sarve satkāreṇābhyayus tadā। brāhmaṇapramukhā rājan vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā ॥2-22-29॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; एनम् (enam) - him; नागराः (nāgarāḥ) - citizens; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सत्कारेण (satkāreṇa) - with honor; अभ्ययुः (abhyayuḥ) - approached; तदा (tadā) - then; ब्राह्मणप्रमुखाः (brāhmaṇapramukhāḥ) - headed by Brāhmaṇas; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विधिदृष्टेन (vidhidṛṣṭena) - as prescribed by rule; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by act;]
(There him citizens all with honor approached then, headed by Brāhmaṇas, O king, as prescribed by rule by act.)
Thereupon, O king, all the citizens, headed by Brāhmaṇas, approached him with honor, performing acts as prescribed by rule. (2-22-29)
बन्धनाद्विप्रमुक्ताश्च राजानो मधुसूदनम्। पूजयामासुरूचुश्च सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वचः ॥२-२२-३०॥
bandhanād vipramuktāś ca rājāno madhusūdanam। pūjayām āsur ūcuś ca sāntvapūrvam idaṃ vacaḥ ॥2-22-30॥
[बन्धनात् (bandhanāt) - from bondage; विप्रमुक्ताः (vipramuktāḥ) - completely liberated; च (ca) - and; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; मधुसूदनम् (madhusūdanam) - to Madhusudana; पूजयाम् (pūjayām) - worshipped; आसुः (āsuḥ) - they did; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; च (ca) - and; सान्त्वपूर्वम् (sāntvapūrvam) - with conciliation first; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(From bondage completely liberated and kings to Madhusudana worshipped, they did, said and with conciliation first this speech.)
The kings, having been completely freed from bondage, worshipped Madhusudana and, first offering conciliatory words, spoke as follows. (2-22-30)
नैतच्चित्रं महाबाहो त्वयि देवकिनन्दन। भीमार्जुनबलोपेते धर्मस्य परिपालनम् ॥२-२२-३१॥
naitac citraṃ mahābāho tvayi devakinandana। bhīmārjunabalopete dharmasya paripālanam ॥2-22-31॥
[न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; चित्रम् (citram) - wonderful; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; देवकिनन्दन (devakinandana) - O son of Devakī; भीम (bhīma) - Bhīma; अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; बल (bala) - strength; उपेत (upeta) - endowed with; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; परिपालनम् (paripālanam) - protection;]
(Not this wonderful, O mighty-armed, in you, O son of Devakī, (when) endowed with the strength of Bhīma and Arjuna, the protection of dharma.)
O mighty-armed son of Devakī, it is not at all surprising that you, endowed with the strength of Bhīma and Arjuna, uphold dharma. (2-22-31)
जरासन्धह्रदे घोरे दुःखपङ्के निमज्जताम्। राज्ञां समभ्युद्धरणं यदिदं कृतमद्य ते ॥२-२२-३२॥
jarāsandhahṛde ghore duḥkhapaṅke nimajjatām। rājñāṃ samabhyuddharaṇaṃ yadidaṃ kṛtamadya te ॥2-22-32॥

(Of the kings sinking in the terrible lake of Jarāsandha, in the mud of suffering, the complete uplifting which this has been done today by you.)
Today, you have accomplished the complete rescue of the kings who were sinking in the dreadful lake of Jarāsandha, in the mire of suffering. (2-22-32)
विष्णो समवसन्नानां गिरिदुर्गे सुदारुणे। दिष्ट्या मोक्षाद्यशो दीप्तमाप्तं ते पुरुषोत्तम ॥२-२२-३३॥
viṣṇo samavasannānāṃ giridur̥ge sudāruṇe। diṣṭyā mokṣādyaśo dīptamāptaṃ te puruṣottama ॥2-22-33॥
[विष्णो (viṣṇo) - O Viṣṇu; समवसन्नानाम् (samavasannānām) - of those who have assembled; गिरिदुर्गे (giridur̥ge) - in the mountain fortress; सुदारुणे (sudāruṇe) - very terrible; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; मोक्ष (mokṣa) - liberation; आद्यशः (ādyaśaḥ) - primarily; दीप्तम् (dīptam) - brilliant; आप्तम् (āptam) - attained; ते (te) - by you; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣottama) - O best among men;]
(O Viṣṇu, of those who have assembled in the very terrible mountain fortress, by fortune, the liberation and foremost glory, brilliant, has been attained by you, O best among men.)
O Viṣṇu, in this dreadful mountain fortress where all have gathered, by good fortune you have attained the brilliant liberation and supreme glory, O best of men. (2-22-33)
किं कुर्मः पुरुषव्याघ्र ब्रवीहि पुरुषर्षभ। कृतमित्येव तज्ज्ञेयं नृपैर्यद्यपि दुष्करम् ॥२-२२-३४॥
kiṁ kurmaḥ puruṣavyāghra bravīhi puruṣarṣabha। kṛtamityeva tajjñeyaṁ nṛpairyadyapi duṣkaram ॥2-22-34॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; कुर्मः (kurmaḥ) - (we) do; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - tiger among men; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - speak; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - bull among men; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; ज्ञेयम् (jñeyam) - should be known; नृपैः (nṛpaiḥ) - by kings; यद्यपि (yadyapi) - although; दुष्करम् (duṣkaram) - difficult;]
(What shall we do, O tiger among men? Speak, O bull among men. That alone should be known as done by kings, even if it is difficult.)
What should we do, O best of men? Please tell us, O foremost among men. Whatever is accomplished by kings, even if difficult, should be considered as done. (2-22-34)
तानुवाच हृषीकेशः समाश्वास्य महामनाः। युधिष्ठिरो राजसूयं क्रतुमाहर्तुमिच्छति ॥२-२२-३५॥
tānuvāca hṛṣīkeśaḥ samāśvāsya mahāmanāḥ। yudhiṣṭhiro rājasūyaṃ kratum āhartum icchati ॥2-22-35॥

(Hṛṣīkeśa, the great-minded, having consoled them, said: "Yudhiṣṭhira desires to perform the Rājasūya sacrifice.")
Hṛṣīkeśa, the great-minded, consoled them and said: "Yudhiṣṭhira wishes to perform the Rājasūya sacrifice." (2-22-35)
तस्य धर्मप्रवृत्तस्य पार्थिवत्वं चिकीर्षतः। सर्वैर्भवद्भिर्यज्ञार्थे साहाय्यं दीयतामिति ॥२-२२-३६॥
tasya dharmapravṛttasya pārthivatvaṃ cikīrṣataḥ। sarvairbhavadbhiryajñārthe sāhāyyaṃ dīyatāmiti ॥2-22-36॥

(Of him, of one engaged in dharma, kingship desiring to accomplish; by all, by you, for the sake of the sacrifice, assistance let it be given thus.)
He, who is engaged in dharma and desires to accomplish kingship, let assistance for the sake of the sacrifice be given by all of you. (2-22-36)
ततः प्रतीतमनसस्ते नृपा भरतर्षभ। तथेत्येवाब्रुवन्सर्वे प्रतिजज्ञुश्च तां गिरम् ॥२-२२-३७॥
tataḥ pratītamanasaste nṛpā bharatarṣabha। tathetyevābruvansarve pratijajñuśca tāṃ giram ॥2-22-37॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रतीतमनसः (pratītamanasaḥ) - with convinced minds; ते (te) - they; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; तथेत्येव (tathetyeva) - 'so be it' indeed; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्रतिजज्ञुः (pratijajñuḥ) - accepted; च (ca) - and; ताम् (tām) - that; गिरम् (giram) - speech;]
(Then, with convinced minds, those kings, O best of the Bharatas, all said 'so be it' indeed, and accepted that speech.)
Then, O best of the Bharatas, those kings, their minds convinced, all said 'So be it' and accepted that statement. (2-22-37)
रत्नभाजं च दाशार्हं चक्रुस्ते पृथिवीश्वराः। कृच्छ्राज्जग्राह गोविन्दस्तेषां तदनुकम्पया ॥२-२२-३८॥
ratnabhājaṃ ca dāśārhaṃ cakruste pṛthivīśvarāḥ। kṛcchrājjagrāha govindasteṣāṃ tadanukampayā ॥2-22-38॥
[रत्नभाजम् (ratnabhājam) - one who possesses jewels; च (ca) - and; दाशार्हम् (dāśārham) - the descendant of the Daśārha (Yadu) clan; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they made; ते (te) - those; पृथिवीश्वराः (pṛthivīśvarāḥ) - lords of the earth; कृच्छ्रात् (kṛcchrāt) - from difficulty; जग्राह (jagrāha) - he accepted; गोविन्दः (govindaḥ) - Govinda (Kṛṣṇa); तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; तदनुकम्पया (tadanukampayā) - out of compassion for that (for them);]
(One who possesses jewels and the descendant of the Daśārha (Yadu) clan, those lords of the earth made. From difficulty, Govinda (Kṛṣṇa) accepted of them, out of compassion for that (for them).)
The lords of the earth made the jewel-bearer and the Daśārha (Kṛṣṇa) their own. Out of compassion for them, Govinda accepted (the burden) from their difficulty. (2-22-38)
जरासन्धात्मजश्चैव सहदेवो महारथः। निर्ययौ सजनामात्यः पुरस्कृत्य पुरोहितम् ॥२-२२-३९॥
jarāsandhātmajaś caiva sahadevo mahārathaḥ। niryayau sa-janāmātyaḥ puraskṛtya purohitam ॥2-22-39॥

The son of Jarasandha, Sahadeva, the great chariot-warrior, set out accompanied by his people and ministers, with the priest leading the way. (2-22-39)
स नीचैः प्रश्रितो भूत्वा बहुरत्नपुरोगमः। सहदेवो नृणां देवं वासुदेवमुपस्थितः ॥२-२२-४०॥
sa nīcaiḥ praśrito bhūtvā bahuratnapurogamaḥ। sahadevo nṛṇāṃ devaṃ vāsudevamupasthitaḥ ॥2-22-40॥

(He, having become respectful with humility, preceded by many jewels, Sahadeva, of men, approached the god Vasudeva.)
Sahadeva, humbly and respectfully, with many jewels in front, approached Lord Vasudeva, the god among men. (2-22-40)
भयार्ताय ततस्तस्मै कृष्णो दत्त्वाभयं तदा। अभ्यषिञ्चत तत्रैव जरासन्धात्मजं तदा ॥२-२२-४१॥
bhayārtāya tatastasmai kṛṣṇo dattvābhayaṃ tadā। abhyaṣiñcata tatraiva jarāsandhātmajaṃ tadā ॥2-22-41॥

(To the one afflicted by fear, then to him, Kṛṣṇa, having given fearlessness, then anointed right there the son of Jarāsandha, then.)
Then Kṛṣṇa, having granted fearlessness to the one afflicted by fear, anointed the son of Jarāsandha right there. (2-22-41)
गत्वैकत्वं च कृष्णेन पार्थाभ्यां चैव सत्कृतः। विवेश राजा मतिमान्पुनर्बार्हद्रथं पुरम् ॥२-२२-४२॥
gatvaikatvaṃ ca kṛṣṇena pārthābhyāṃ caiva satkṛtaḥ। viveśa rājā matimān punar bārhadrathaṃ puram ॥2-22-42॥
[गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; एकत्वं (ekatvam) - unity; oneness; च (ca) - and; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; पार्थाभ्यां (pārthābhyām) - by the two sons of Pṛthā; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सत्कृतः (satkṛtaḥ) - honored; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; राजा (rājā) - the king; मतिमान् (matimān) - wise; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; बार्हद्रथं (bārhadratham) - of the Barhadratha (dynasty); पुरम् (puram) - city;]
(Having gone to unity and having been honored by Kṛṣṇa and the two sons of Pṛthā, the wise king again entered the city of the Barhadrathas.)
Having achieved unity and being honored by Kṛṣṇa and the two sons of Pṛthā, the wise king once again entered the city of the Barhadrathas. (2-22-42)
कृष्णस्तु सह पार्थाभ्यां श्रिया परमया ज्वलन्। रत्नान्यादाय भूरीणि प्रययौ पुष्करेक्षणः ॥२-२२-४३॥
kṛṣṇas tu saha pārthābhyāṃ śriyā paramayā jvalan। ratnāny ādāya bhūrīṇi prayayau puṣkarekṣaṇaḥ ॥2-22-43॥
[कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; (the dark one, name of the deity); तु (tu) - but; (emphatic particle); सह (saha) - together with; (accompaniment); पार्थाभ्यां (pārthābhyām) - with the two sons of Pṛthā (Arjuna and Bhīma); श्रिया (śriyā) - with splendour; (prosperity, beauty); परमया (paramayā) - supreme; (highest, greatest); ज्वलन् (jvalan) - shining; (blazing, glowing); रत्नानि (ratnāni) - jewels; (gems); आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; (having received); भूरीणि (bhūrīṇi) - many; (numerous); प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; (went, proceeded); पुष्करेक्षणः (puṣkarekṣaṇaḥ) - the lotus-eyed one; (epithet of Kṛṣṇa);]
(Kṛṣṇa but together with the two sons of Pṛthā, with supreme splendour shining, having taken many jewels, departed, the lotus-eyed one.)
But Kṛṣṇa, together with the two sons of Pṛthā, shining with supreme splendour, took many jewels and departed, the lotus-eyed one. (2-22-43)
इन्द्रप्रस्थमुपागम्य पाण्डवाभ्यां सहाच्युतः। समेत्य धर्मराजानं प्रीयमाणोऽभ्यभाषत ॥२-२२-४४॥
indraprastham upāgamya pāṇḍavābhyāṃ sahācyutaḥ। sametya dharmarājānaṃ prīyamāṇo'bhyabhāṣata ॥2-22-44॥
[इन्द्रप्रस्थम् (indraprastham) - to Indraprastha; उपागम्य (upāgamya) - having approached; पाण्डवाभ्यां (pāṇḍavābhyām) - with the two Pāṇḍavas; सह (saha) - together with; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa); समेत्य (sametya) - having met; धर्मराजानम् (dharmarājānam) - Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira); प्रीयमाणः (prīyamāṇaḥ) - being pleased; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed;]
(Having approached Indraprastha together with the two Pāṇḍavas, Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa), having met Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira), being pleased, addressed (him).)
Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa), accompanied by the two Pāṇḍavas, came to Indraprastha. Meeting Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira), he addressed him with pleasure. (2-22-44)
दिष्ट्या भीमेन बलवाञ्जरासन्धो निपातितः। राजानो मोक्षिताश्चेमे बन्धनान्नृपसत्तम ॥२-२२-४५॥
diṣṭyā bhīmena balavāñ jarāsandho nipātitaḥ। rājāno mokṣitāś ceme bandhanān nṛpasattama ॥2-22-45॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; by destiny; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhīma; बलवान् (balavān) - the strong one; जरासन्धः (jarāsandhaḥ) - Jarāsandha; निपातितः (nipātitaḥ) - has been struck down; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; मोक्षिताः (mokṣitāḥ) - have been released; च (ca) - and; इमे (ime) - these; बन्धनात् (bandhanāt) - from bondage; नृपसत्तम (nṛpasattama) - O best of kings;]
(By fortune, by Bhīma, the strong one Jarāsandha has been struck down. Kings have been released and these from bondage, O best of kings.)
By good fortune, Bhīma has slain the mighty Jarāsandha. These kings have been freed from captivity, O best of kings. (2-22-45)
दिष्ट्या कुशलिनौ चेमौ भीमसेनधनञ्जयौ। पुनः स्वनगरं प्राप्तावक्षताविति भारत ॥२-२२-४६॥
diṣṭyā kuśalinau cemau bhīmasenadhanañjayau। punaḥ svanagaraṃ prāptāvakṣatāvitibhārata ॥2-22-46॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; by destiny; कुशलिनौ (kuśalinau) - safe; in good condition; च (ca) - and; इमौ (imau) - these two; भीमसेनधनञ्जयौ (bhīmasenadhanañjayau) - Bhīmasena and Dhanañjaya; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; स्वनगरं (svanagaraṃ) - own city; प्राप्तौ (prāptau) - have arrived; अक्षतौ (akṣatau) - unharmed; uninjured; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(By fortune, these two, Bhīmasena and Dhanañjaya, are safe and have again arrived at their own city unharmed, thus, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, by good fortune, these two, Bhīmasena and Dhanañjaya, have safely returned once again to their own city unharmed. (2-22-46)
ततो युधिष्ठिरः कृष्णं पूजयित्वा यथार्हतः। भीमसेनार्जुनौ चैव प्रहृष्टः परिषस्वजे ॥२-२२-४७॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiraḥ kṛṣṇaṃ pūjayitvā yathārhataḥ। bhīmasenārjunau caiva prahṛṣṭaḥ pariṣasvaje ॥2-22-47॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; कृष्णं (kṛṣṇam) - Krishna (accusative); पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having worshipped; यथार्हतः (yathārhataḥ) - as was proper; भीमसेनार्जुनौ (bhīmasenārjunau) - Bhimasena and Arjuna (dual); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रहृष्टः (prahṛṣṭaḥ) - joyful; परिषस्वजे (pariṣasvaje) - embraced;]
(Then Yudhishthira, having worshipped Krishna as was proper, joyfully embraced Bhimasena and Arjuna.)
Then Yudhishthira, after duly worshipping Krishna, joyfully embraced Bhimasena and Arjuna. (2-22-47)
ततः क्षीणे जरासन्धे भ्रातृभ्यां विहितं जयम्। अजातशत्रुरासाद्य मुमुदे भ्रातृभिः सह ॥२-२२-४८॥
tataḥ kṣīṇe jarāsandhe bhrātṛbhyāṃ vihitaṃ jayam। ajātaśatrur āsādya mumude bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ॥2-22-48॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; क्षीणे (kṣīṇe) - having been destroyed; जरासन्धे (jarāsandhe) - Jarāsandha (the king); भ्रातृभ्यां (bhrātṛbhyāṃ) - by the two brothers; विहितं (vihitam) - accomplished; जयम् (jayam) - victory; अजातशत्रुः (ajātaśatruḥ) - Ajātaśatru (Yudhiṣṭhira); आसाद्य (āsādya) - having obtained; मुमुदे (mumude) - rejoiced; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सह (saha) - together;]
(Then, with Jarāsandha having been destroyed, victory accomplished by the two brothers, Ajātaśatru (Yudhiṣṭhira), having obtained (this), rejoiced together with his brothers.)
Then, after Jarāsandha was slain and victory was achieved by the two brothers, Ajātaśatru (Yudhiṣṭhira) rejoiced together with his brothers. (2-22-48)
यथावयः समागम्य राजभिस्तैश्च पाण्डवः। सत्कृत्य पूजयित्वा च विससर्ज नराधिपान् ॥२-२२-४९॥
yathāvayaḥ samāgamya rājabhistaiśca pāṇḍavaḥ। satkṛtya pūjayitvā ca visasarja narādhipān ॥2-22-49॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; according to; in the way; as per; अवयः (avayaḥ) - age; seniority; समागम्य (samāgamya) - having come together; having assembled; राजभिः (rājabhiḥ) - by the kings; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; सत्कृत्य (satkṛtya) - having honored; having respected; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having worshipped; having shown respect; च (ca) - and; विससर्ज (visasarja) - dismissed; sent away; नराधिपान् (narādhipān) - the kings; rulers of men;]
(As per age, having assembled by the kings and the son of Pāṇḍu, having honored and having worshipped, and dismissed the kings.)
The son of Pāṇḍu, having assembled with the kings according to their age, honored and worshipped them, and then dismissed the rulers of men. (2-22-49)
युधिष्ठिराभ्यनुज्ञातास्ते नृपा हृष्टमानसाः। जग्मुः स्वदेशांस्त्वरिता यानैरुच्चावचैस्ततः ॥२-२२-५०॥
yudhiṣṭhirābhyanujñātās te nṛpā hṛṣṭamānasāḥ। jagmuḥ svadeśāṃs tvaritā yānair uccāvacais tataḥ॥2-22-50॥
[युधिष्ठिर-अभ्यनुज्ञाताः (yudhiṣṭhira-abhyanujñātāḥ) - having been permitted by Yudhishthira; ते (te) - they; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; हृष्ट-मानसाः (hṛṣṭa-mānasāḥ) - with delighted minds; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; स्व-देशान् (sva-deśān) - to their own countries; त्वरिताः (tvaritāḥ) - hurried; यानैः (yānaiḥ) - by vehicles; उच्च-अवचैः (ucca-avacaiḥ) - high and low (of various kinds); ततः (tataḥ) - from there;]
(Having been permitted by Yudhishthira, those kings with delighted minds hurried from there to their own countries by vehicles of various kinds, both high and low.)
With Yudhishthira's permission, the delighted kings quickly departed from there to their own lands, traveling in vehicles of every kind, both grand and humble. (2-22-50)
एवं पुरुषशार्दूलो महाबुद्धिर्जनार्दनः। पाण्डवैर्घातयामास जरासन्धमरिं तदा ॥२-२२-५१॥
evaṃ puruṣaśārdūlo mahābuddhirjanārdanaḥ। pāṇḍavairghātayāmāsa jarāsandhamariṃ tadā ॥2-22-51॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; पुरुषशार्दूलः (puruṣaśārdūlaḥ) - tiger among men; महाबुद्धिः (mahābuddhiḥ) - great intellect; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa); पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; घातयामास (ghātayāmāsa) - caused to be slain; जरासन्धम् (jarāsandham) - Jarāsandha; अरिम् (arim) - enemy; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus, the tiger among men, Janārdana of great intellect, then caused the enemy Jarāsandha to be slain by the Pāṇḍavas.)
Thus, Janārdana, the tiger among men and of great intellect, caused the enemy Jarāsandha to be slain by the Pāṇḍavas at that time. (2-22-51)
घातयित्वा जरासन्धं बुद्धिपूर्वमरिंदमः। धर्मराजमनुज्ञाप्य पृथां कृष्णां च भारत ॥२-२२-५२॥
ghātayitvā jarāsandhaṃ buddhipūrvam ariṃdamaḥ। dharmarājam anujñāpya pṛthāṃ kṛṣṇāṃ ca bhārata ॥2-22-52॥
[घातयित्वा (ghātayitvā) - having caused to be slain; जरासन्धं (jarāsandham) - Jarāsandha; बुद्धिपूर्वम् (buddhipūrvam) - with prior intelligence; अरिंदमः (ariṃdamaḥ) - the subduer of enemies; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmarāja; अनुज्ञाप्य (anujñāpya) - having obtained permission; पृथाम् (pṛthām) - Pṛthā; कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Having caused Jarāsandha to be slain with prior intelligence, the subduer of enemies, having obtained permission from Dharmarāja, Pṛthā, and Kṛṣṇā, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, having slain Jarāsandha through strategy, the subduer of enemies, after obtaining permission from Dharmarāja, Pṛthā, and Kṛṣṇā. (2-22-52)
सुभद्रां भीमसेनं च फल्गुनं यमजौ तथा। धौम्यमामन्त्रयित्वा च प्रययौ स्वां पुरीं प्रति ॥२-२२-५३॥
subhadrāṃ bhīmasenaṃ ca phalgunaṃ yamajau tathā। dhaumyamāmantrayitvā ca prayayau svāṃ purīṃ prati ॥2-22-53॥
[सुभद्रां (subhadrām) - Subhadrā (accusative); भीमसेनं (bhīmasenam) - Bhīmasena (accusative); च (ca) - and; फल्गुनं (phalgunaṃ) - Phalguna (Arjuna, accusative); यमजौ (yamajau) - the two sons of Yama (Nakula and Sahadeva, accusative dual); तथा (tathā) - also; धौम्यम् (dhaumyam) - Dhaumya (accusative); आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; च (ca) - and; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; स्वां (svām) - his own; पुरीं (purīṃ) - city (accusative); प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Subhadrā, Bhīmasena and Phalguna, the two sons of Yama also; having addressed Dhaumya and departed towards his own city.)
He addressed Subhadrā, Bhīmasena, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva, as well as Dhaumya, and then departed for his own city. (2-22-53)
तेनैव रथमुख्येन तरुणादित्यवर्चसा। धर्मराजविसृष्टेन दिव्येनानादयन्दिशः ॥२-२२-५४॥
tenaiva rathamukhyena taruṇādityavarcasā। dharmarājavisṛṣṭena divyenānādayandiśaḥ ॥2-22-54॥
[तेनैव (tenaiva) - by that very; रथमुख्येन (rathamukhyena) - by the foremost chariot; तरुण (taruṇa) - young; आदित्य (āditya) - sun; वर्चसा (varcasā) - with the brilliance; धर्मराज (dharmarāja) - Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira); विसृष्टेन (visṛṣṭena) - dispatched; दिव्येन (divyena) - divine; अनादयन् (anādayan) - causing to resound; दिशः (diśaḥ) - the directions;]
(By that very foremost chariot, with the brilliance of the young sun, dispatched by Dharmarāja, divine, causing the directions to resound.)
By that very foremost chariot, shining like the young sun, sent forth by Dharmarāja, the divine one made the quarters echo. (2-22-54)
ततो युधिष्ठिरमुखाः पाण्डवा भरतर्षभ। प्रदक्षिणमकुर्वन्त कृष्णमक्लिष्टकारिणम् ॥२-२२-५५॥
tato yudhiṣṭhira-mukhāḥ pāṇḍavā bharatarṣabha। pradakṣiṇam akurvanta kṛṣṇam akliṣṭa-kāriṇam ॥2-22-55॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; युधिष्ठिरमुखाः (yudhiṣṭhira-mukhāḥ) - headed by Yudhiṣṭhira; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; अकुर्वन्त (akurvanta) - they performed; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - to Kṛṣṇa; अक्लिष्टकारिणम् (akliṣṭa-kāriṇam) - the doer of effortless deeds;]
(Then, headed by Yudhiṣṭhira, the Pāṇḍavas, O best of the Bharatas, performed circumambulation to Kṛṣṇa, the doer of effortless deeds.)
Then, O best of the Bharatas, the Pāṇḍavas led by Yudhiṣṭhira circumambulated Kṛṣṇa, the performer of effortless deeds. (2-22-55)
ततो गते भगवति कृष्णे देवकिनन्दने। जयं लब्ध्वा सुविपुलं राज्ञामभयदास्तदा ॥२-२२-५६॥
tato gate bhagavati kṛṣṇe devakinandane। jayaṃ labdhvā suviphulaṃ rājñām abhayadās tadā ॥2-22-56॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गते (gate) - having gone; भगवति (bhagavati) - in the divine; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - Kṛṣṇa; देवकिनन्दने (devakinandane) - son of Devakī; जयं (jayaṃ) - victory; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; सुविपुलं (suvipulaṃ) - very great; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of the kings; अभयदाः (abhayadāḥ) - givers of fearlessness; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then, after the divine Kṛṣṇa, the son of Devakī, had gone, having obtained a very great victory, the kings became givers of fearlessness at that time.)
Then, when the divine Kṛṣṇa, son of Devakī, had departed, having achieved a great victory, the kings at that time granted fearlessness. (2-22-56)
संवर्धितौजसो भूयः कर्मणा तेन भारत। द्रौपद्याः पाण्डवा राजन्परां प्रीतिमवर्धयन् ॥२-२२-५७॥
saṁvardhitaujasaḥ bhūyaḥ karmaṇā tena bhārata। draupadyāḥ pāṇḍavā rājan parāṁ prītim avardhayan ॥2-22-57॥
[संवर्धित (saṁvardhita) - increased; औजसः (aujasaḥ) - strength; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - further; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; तेन (tena) - by that; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; द्रौपद्याः (draupadyāḥ) - of Draupadī; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पराम् (parām) - supreme; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - delight; अवर्धयन् (avardhayan) - caused to increase;]
(With their strength increased further by that action, O Bhārata, the Pāṇḍavas, O king, caused Draupadī's supreme delight to increase.)
O Bhārata, by that action, the Pāṇḍavas, whose strength had grown, further increased Draupadī's supreme happiness, O king. (2-22-57)
तस्मिन्काले तु यद्युक्तं धर्मकामार्थसंहितम्। तद्राजा धर्मतश्चक्रे राज्यपालनकीर्तिमान् ॥२-२२-५८॥
tasmin kāle tu yadyuktaṃ dharmakāmārthasaṃhitam। tadrājā dharmataś cakre rājyapālanakīrtimān ॥2-22-58॥

(In that time, but, whatever was joined with dharma, kāma, and artha, that the king, according to dharma, did, being renowned for the protection of the kingdom.)
At that time, whatever was in accordance with dharma, desire, and wealth, the king, acting righteously, performed, being renowned for his protection of the kingdom. (2-22-58)
