Pancharatra: Bhimas conquest of the east till Chedi. Regions include Panchala, Gandaki, Videha, Dasharna, Ashvamedha, and Chedi.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु भीमसेनोऽपि वीर्यवान्। धर्मराजमनुज्ञाप्य ययौ प्राचीं दिशं प्रति ॥२-२६-१॥
etasminneva kāle tu bhīmaseno'pi vīryavān। dharmarājamanujñāpya yayau prācīṃ diśaṃ prati ॥2-26-1॥
[एतस्मिन् (etasmin) - in this; (locative singular of idam) एव (eva) - indeed; only; काले (kāle) - time; (locative singular of kāla) तु (tu) - but; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; (proper noun) अपि (api) - also; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; possessing strength; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmarāja; (Yudhiṣṭhira; accusative singular) अनुज्ञाप्य (anujñāpya) - having taken permission; (absolutive of anujñā) ययौ (yayau) - went; प्राचीम् (prācīm) - eastern; (accusative singular, feminine) दिशम् (diśam) - direction; (accusative singular, feminine) प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(But at this very time, the powerful Bhīmasena, having taken permission from Dharmarāja, went towards the eastern direction.)
At that very time, the mighty Bhīmasena, after taking leave of Dharmarāja, set out towards the east. (2-26-1)
महताऽबलचक्रेण परराष्ट्रावमर्दिना। वृतो भरतशार्दूलो द्विषच्छोकविवर्धनः ॥२-२६-२॥
mahatā balacakreṇa pararāṣṭrāvamardinā। vṛto bharataśārdūlo dviṣacchokavivardhanaḥ ॥2-26-2॥
[महताऽ (mahatā) - by the great; by the mighty; बलचक्रेण (balacakreṇa) - by the army-circle; by the military force; परराष्ट्रावमर्दिना (pararāṣṭrāvamardinā) - by the crusher of enemy kingdoms; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded; encompassed; भरतशार्दूलः (bharataśārdūlaḥ) - tiger among the Bharatas; best of the Bharatas; द्विषच्छोकविवर्धनः (dviṣacchokavivardhanaḥ) - one who increases the grief of enemies; increaser of enemies' sorrow;]
(The tiger among the Bharatas, surrounded by the mighty army-circle of the crusher of enemy kingdoms, (he) who increases the grief of enemies.)
The best of the Bharatas, surrounded by the powerful army of the subduer of enemy kingdoms, who brings sorrow to his foes. (2-26-2)
स गत्वा राजशार्दूलः पाञ्चालानां पुरं महत्। पाञ्चालान्विविधोपायैः सान्त्वयामास पाण्डवः ॥२-२६-३॥
sa gatvā rājaśārdūlaḥ pāñcālānāṃ puraṃ mahat। pāñcālān vividhopāyaiḥ sāntvayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ ॥2-26-3॥
[स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; राजशार्दूलः (rājaśārdūlaḥ) - tiger among kings; पाञ्चालानां (pāñcālānām) - of the Pāñcālas; पुरं (puraṃ) - city; महत् (mahat) - great; पाञ्चालान् (pāñcālān) - the Pāñcālas; विविधोपायैः (vividhopāyaiḥ) - by various means; सान्त्वयामास (sāntvayāmāsa) - conciliated; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava;]
(He, having gone, the tiger among kings, to the great city of the Pāñcālas, the Pāṇḍava conciliated the Pāñcālas by various means.)
Having reached the great city of the Pāñcālas, the Pāṇḍava, that tiger among kings, conciliated the Pāñcālas by various means. (2-26-3)
ततः स गण्डकीं शूरो विदेहांश्च नरर्षभः। विजित्याल्पेन कालेन दशार्णानगमत्प्रभुः ॥२-२६-४॥
tataḥ sa gaṇḍakīṃ śūro videhāṃś ca nararṣabhaḥ। vijityālpena kālena daśārṇān agamat prabhuḥ ॥2-26-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; गण्डकीं (gaṇḍakīṃ) - Gaṇḍakī (river); शूरः (śūraḥ) - hero; विदेहान् (videhān) - the Videhas; च (ca) - and; नरर्षभः (nararṣabhaḥ) - bull among men; विजित्य (vijitya) - having conquered; अल्पेन (alpena) - in little; कालेन (kālena) - time; दशार्णान् (daśārṇān) - the Daśārṇas; अगमत् (agamat) - went; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(Then he, the hero, the bull among men, having conquered the Gaṇḍakī and the Videhas, in little time went to the Daśārṇas, the lord.)
Then that heroic bull among men, having conquered the Gaṇḍakī region and the Videhas, quickly proceeded to the Daśārṇas, the lord. (2-26-4)
तत्र दाशार्णको राजा सुधर्मा लोमहर्षणम्। कृतवान्कर्म भीमेन महद्युद्धं निरायुधम् ॥२-२६-५॥
tatra dāśārṇako rājā sudharmā lomaharṣaṇam। kṛtavān karma bhīmena mahadyuddhaṃ nirāyudham ॥2-26-5॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; दाशार्णकः (dāśārṇakaḥ) - the king of Daśārṇa; राजा (rājā) - king; सुधर्मा (sudharmā) - Sudharmā (proper name); लोमहर्षणम् (lomaharṣaṇam) - Lomaharṣaṇa (proper name, accusative); कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - performed; कर्म (karma) - act; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhīma; महत् (mahat) - great; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; निरायुधम् (nirāyudham) - unarmed;]
(There, the king of Daśārṇa, Sudharmā, performed (an) act (upon) Lomaharṣaṇa: by Bhīma, (a) great unarmed battle.)
There, King Sudharmā of Daśārṇa caused Lomaharṣaṇa to engage in a great unarmed battle with Bhīma. (2-26-5)
भीमसेनस्तु तद्दृष्ट्वा तस्य कर्म परन्तपः। अधिसेनापतिं चक्रे सुधर्माणं महाबलम् ॥२-२६-६॥
bhīmasenastu taddṛṣṭvā tasya karma parantapaḥ। adhisenāpatiṃ cakre sudharmāṇaṃ mahābalam ॥2-26-6॥
[भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तस्य (tasya) - his; कर्म (karma) - action; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes; अधि (adhi) - over; सेनापतिम् (senāpatim) - commander; चक्रे (cakre) - made; सुधर्माणम् (sudharmāṇam) - Sudharmāṇa; महाबलम् (mahābalam) - mighty;]
(But Bhīmasena, having seen that action of his, the scorcher of foes, made the mighty Sudharmāṇa the commander over the army.)
But Bhīmasena, witnessing his deed, appointed the mighty Sudharmāṇa as the commander of the army. (2-26-6)
ततः प्राचीं दिशं भीमो ययौ भीमपराक्रमः। सैन्येन महता राजन्कम्पयन्निव मेदिनीम् ॥२-२६-७॥
tataḥ prācīṃ diśaṃ bhīmo yayau bhīmaparākramaḥ। sainyena mahatā rājan kampayanniva medinīm ॥2-26-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्राचीं (prācīṃ) - eastern; दिशं (diśaṃ) - direction; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; ययौ (yayau) - went; भीमपराक्रमः (bhīmaparākramaḥ) - of mighty prowess; सैन्येन (sainyena) - with army; महतā (mahatā) - great; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कम्पयन् (kampayan) - shaking; इव (iva) - as if; मेदिनीम् (medinīm) - the earth;]
(Then Bhima of mighty prowess went to the eastern direction, with a great army, O king, as if shaking the earth.)
Then Bhima, of immense strength, proceeded eastward with a vast army, O king, as if he were shaking the earth. (2-26-7)
सोऽश्वमेधेश्वरं राजन्रोचमानं सहानुजम्। जिगाय समरे वीरो बलेन बलिनां वरः ॥२-२६-८॥
so'śvamedheśvaraṃ rājān rocamānaṃ sahānujam। jigāya samare vīro balena balināṃ varaḥ ॥2-26-8॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अश्वमेधेश्वरम् (aśvamedheśvaram) - lord of the aśvamedha sacrifice; राजन् (rājan) - O king; रोचमानम् (rocamānam) - shining; सह (saha) - together with; अनुजम् (anujam) - younger brother; जिगाय (jigāya) - conquered; समरे (samare) - in battle; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; बलेन (balena) - by strength; बलिनाम् (balinām) - of the strong; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
(He, the lord of the aśvamedha sacrifice, O king, shining together with his younger brother, the hero conquered in battle by strength, the best of the strong.)
O king, he, the lord of the aśvamedha sacrifice, shining with his younger brother, that heroic best among the strong conquered in battle by his strength. (2-26-8)
स तं निर्जित्य कौन्तेयो नातितीव्रेण कर्मणा। पूर्वदेशं महावीर्यो विजिग्ये कुरुनन्दनः ॥२-२६-९॥
sa taṃ nirjitya kaunteyo nātitīvreṇa karmaṇā। pūrvadeśaṃ mahāvīryo vijigye kurunandanaḥ ॥2-26-9॥
[स (sa) - he; तं (taṃ) - him; निर्जित्य (nirjitya) - having conquered; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; न (na) - not; अतितीव्रेण (atitīvreṇa) - with excessively intense; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; पूर्वदेशं (pūrvadeśam) - eastern region; महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - of great valor; विजिग्ये (vijigye) - conquered; कुरुनन्दनः (kurunandanaḥ) - delight of the Kurus;]
(He, having conquered him, the son of Kunti, not with excessively intense action, the eastern region, of great valor, conquered, delight of the Kurus.)
The son of Kunti, the mighty-armed delight of the Kurus, having conquered him, subdued the eastern region, not by excessively intense action. (2-26-9)
ततो दक्षिणमागम्य पुलिन्दनगरं महत्। सुकुमारं वशे चक्रे सुमित्रं च नराधिपम् ॥२-२६-१०॥
tato dakṣiṇam āgamya pulindanagaraṃ mahat। sukumāraṃ vaśe cakre sumitraṃ ca narādhipam ॥2-26-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दक्षिणम् (dakṣiṇam) - to the south; आगम्य (āgamya) - having arrived; पुलिन्दनगरम् (pulindanagaram) - Pulinda city; महत् (mahat) - great; सुकुमारम् (sukumāram) - Sukumāra; वशे (vaśe) - under control; चक्रे (cakre) - made; सुमित्रम् (sumitram) - Sumitra; च (ca) - and; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - king;]
(Then, having arrived to the south, the great Pulinda city; he made Sukumāra and Sumitra, the king, under control.)
Then, proceeding southwards, he reached the great city of Pulinda and brought Sukumāra and Sumitra, the king, under his control. (2-26-10)
ततस्तु धर्मराजस्य शासनाद्भरतर्षभः। शिशुपालं महावीर्यमभ्ययाज्जनमेजय ॥२-२६-११॥
tatastu dharmarājasya śāsanādbharatarṣabhaḥ| śiśupālaṃ mahāvīryamabhyayājjanamējaya ॥2-26-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by the command; भरतर्षभः (bharatarṣabhaḥ) - bull among the Bharatas; शिशुपालं (śiśupālam) - Śiśupāla; महावीर्यम् (mahāvīryam) - of great might; अभ्ययात् (abhyayāt) - approached; जनमेजय (janamējaya) - O Janamejaya;]
(Then but, by the command of Dharmarāja, the bull among the Bharatas approached Śiśupāla of great might, O Janamejaya.)
Then, O Janamejaya, at the command of Dharmarāja, the foremost of the Bharatas approached the mighty Śiśupāla. (2-26-11)
चेदिराजोऽपि तच्छ्रुत्वा पाण्डवस्य चिकीर्षितम्। उपनिष्क्रम्य नगरात्प्रत्यगृह्णात्परन्तपः ॥२-२६-१२॥
cedirājo'pi tacchrutvā pāṇḍavasya cikīrṣitam। upaniṣkramya nagarātpratyagṛhṇātparantapaḥ ॥2-26-12॥
[चेदिराजः (cedirājaḥ) - the king of Cedi; अपि (api) - also; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; पाण्डवस्य (pāṇḍavasya) - of the Pāṇḍava; चिकीर्षितम् (cikīrṣitam) - intended action; उपनिष्क्रम्य (upaniṣkramya) - having come out; नगरात् (nagarāt) - from the city; प्रत्यगृह्णात् (pratyagṛhṇāt) - received; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - the scorcher of foes;]
(The king of Cedi also, having heard that intended action of the Pāṇḍava, having come out from the city, received (him), O scorcher of foes.)
The king of Cedi, too, upon hearing of the Pāṇḍava's intention, came out of the city and welcomed him, O subduer of enemies. (2-26-12)
तौ समेत्य महाराज कुरुचेदिवृषौ तदा। उभयोरात्मकुलयोः कौशल्यं पर्यपृच्छताम् ॥२-२६-१३॥
tau sametya mahārāja kurucedivṛṣau tadā। ubhayorātmakulayoḥ kauśalyaṃ paryapṛcchatām ॥2-26-13॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; समेत्य (sametya) - having come together; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; कुरुचेदिवृषौ (kurucedivṛṣau) - the bulls among the Kurus and Cedis; तदा (tadā) - then; उभयोः (ubhayoḥ) - of both; आत्मकुलयोः (ātmakulayoḥ) - of their own families; कौशल्यं (kauśalyaṃ) - skill; पर्यपृच्छताम् (paryapṛcchatām) - they inquired;]
(Those two, having come together, O great king, the bulls among the Kurus and Cedis, then, of both their own families, skill, they inquired.)
O great king, then those two, the foremost among the Kurus and Cedis, having come together, inquired about the welfare and skill of both their own families. (2-26-13)
ततो निवेद्य तद्राष्ट्रं चेदिराजो विशां पते। उवाच भीमं प्रहसन्किमिदं कुरुषेऽनघ ॥२-२६-१४॥
tato nivedya tadrāṣṭraṃ cedirājo viśāṃ pate| uvāca bhīmaṃ prahasan kimidaṃ kuruṣe'nagha ॥2-26-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; निवेद्य (nivedya) - having informed; तद्राष्ट्रम् (tadrāṣṭram) - to Dhritarashtra; चेदिराजः (cedirājaḥ) - the king of Chedi; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; उवाच (uvāca) - said; भीमम् (bhīmam) - to Bhima; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; किम् (kim) - what; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कुरुषे (kuruṣe) - are you doing; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Then, having informed Dhritarashtra, the king of Chedi, O lord of men, said to Bhima, smiling: "O sinless one, what is this you are doing?")
Then, after informing Dhritarashtra, the king of Chedi, smiling, said to Bhima: "O sinless one, what are you doing?" (2-26-14)
तस्य भीमस्तदाचख्यौ धर्मराजचिकीर्षितम्। स च तत्प्रतिगृह्यैव तथा चक्रे नराधिपः ॥२-२६-१५॥
tasya bhīmas tad ācakhyau dharmarājacikīrṣitam। sa ca tat pratigṛhyaiva tathā cakre narādhipaḥ ॥2-26-15॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; तत् (tat) - that; आचख्यौ (ācakhyau) - reported; धर्मराजचिकीर्षितम् (dharmarājacikīrṣitam) - intended by Dharmarāja; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having accepted; एव (eva) - indeed; तथा (tathā) - thus; चक्रे (cakre) - did; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the king;]
(Of him, Bhīma reported that which was intended by Dharmarāja. And he, having accepted that, indeed did thus, the king. (2-26-15))
Bhīma reported to him what Dharmarāja intended. The king, having accepted that, acted accordingly. (2-26-15)
ततो भीमस्तत्र राजन्नुषित्वा त्रिदशाः क्षपाः। सत्कृतः शिशुपालेन ययौ सबलवाहनः ॥२-२६-१६॥
tato bhīmas tatra rājan nuṣitvā tridaśāḥ kṣapāḥ। satkṛtaḥ śiśupālena yayau sabalavāhanaḥ ॥2-26-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; तत्र (tatra) - there; राजन् (rājan) - O king; उषित्वा (uṣitvā) - having dwelt; त्रिदशाः (tridaśāḥ) - the gods; क्षपाः (kṣapāḥ) - nights; सत्कृतः (satkṛtaḥ) - honored; शिशुपालेन (śiśupālena) - by Śiśupāla; ययौ (yayau) - departed; सबलवाहनः (sabalavāhanaḥ) - with his army and vehicles;]
(Then Bhīma, O king, having dwelt there the nights of the gods, honored by Śiśupāla, departed with his army and vehicles.)
Then Bhīma, O king, after staying there for several nights, being honored by Śiśupāla, departed with his army and vehicles. (2-26-16)
