Pancharatra: Sahadeva’s conquest of the south Regions.

तथैव सहदेवोऽपि धर्मराजेन पूजितः। महत्या सेनया सार्धं प्रययौ दक्षिणां दिशम् ॥२-२८-१॥
tathaiva sahadevo'pi dharmarājena pūjitaḥ। mahatyā senayā sārdhaṃ prayayau dakṣiṇāṃ diśam ॥2-28-1॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; अपि (api) - also; धर्मराजेन (dharmarājena) - by Dharmarāja; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored; महत्या (mahatyā) - with great; सेनया (senayā) - army; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) - together with; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; दक्षिणां (dakṣiṇāṃ) - southern; दिशम् (diśam) - direction;]
(In the same manner, Sahadeva also, honored by Dharmarāja, departed together with a great army to the southern direction.)
Likewise, Sahadeva, having been honored by Dharmaraja, set out with a large army towards the southern direction. (2-28-1)
स शूरसेनान्कार्त्स्न्येन पूर्वमेवाजयत्प्रभुः। मत्स्यराजं च कौरव्यो वशे चक्रे बलाद्बली ॥२-२८-२॥
sa śūrasenān kārtsnyena pūrvam evājayat prabhuḥ। matsyarājaṃ ca kauravyo vaśe cakre balād balī ॥2-28-2॥

(He entirely conquered the Śūrasenas before indeed, the lord; and the Kaurava made the king of the Matsyas under control by force, the powerful one.)
He, the powerful lord, had previously conquered all the Śūrasenas; and the Kaurava, by force, brought the king of the Matsyas under his control. (2-28-2)
अधिराजाधिपं चैव दन्तवक्रं महाहवे। जिगाय करदं चैव स्वराज्ये संन्यवेशयत् ॥२-२८-३॥

सुकुमारं वशे चक्रे सुमित्रं च नराधिपम्। तथैवापरमत्स्यांश्च व्यजयत्स पटच्चरान् ॥२-२८-४॥
sukumāraṃ vaśe cakre sumitraṃ ca narādhipam। tathaivāparamatsyāṃśca vyajayatsa paṭaccarān ॥2-28-4॥

(He made the very tender Sumitra and the king subject to his control; in the same way, he conquered the other Matsyas and the Pataccaras.)
He brought the gentle Sumitra and the king under his control; likewise, he defeated the other Matsyas and the Pataccaras. (2-28-4)
निषादभूमिं गोशृङ्गं पर्वतप्रवरं तथा। तरसा व्यजयद्धीमाञ्श्रेणिमन्तं च पार्थिवम् ॥२-२८-५॥
niṣādabhūmiṃ gośṛṅgaṃ parvatapravaraṃ tathā। tarasā vyajayaddhīmāñśreṇimantaṃ ca pārthivam ॥2-28-5॥
[निषादभूमिं (niṣādabhūmiṃ) - Niṣāda land; गोशृङ्गं (gośṛṅgam) - Gośṛṅga (name of a mountain); पर्वतप्रवरं (parvatapravaram) - foremost among mountains; तथा (tathā) - also; तरसा (tarasā) - by force; विजयत् (vyajayat) - conquered; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise one; श्रेणिमन्तं (śreṇimantam) - Śreṇimant (name of a king); च (ca) - and; पार्थिवम् (pārthivam) - the ruler;]
(Niṣāda land, Gośṛṅga, the foremost among mountains also; by force, the wise one conquered Śreṇimant and the ruler.)
The wise one also conquered the Niṣāda land, Gośṛṅga mountain, and the foremost of mountains, as well as Śreṇimant and the ruler, by force. (2-28-5)
नवराष्ट्रं विनिर्जित्य कुन्तिभोजमुपाद्रवत्। प्रीतिपूर्वं च तस्यासौ प्रतिजग्राह शासनम् ॥२-२८-६॥
navarāṣṭraṃ vinirjitya kuntibhojam-upādravat। prītipūrvaṃ ca tasyāsau pratijagrāha śāsanam ॥2-28-6॥

(Having completely conquered the new kingdom, he approached Kuntibhoja. And with affection, he accepted his command.)

ततश्चर्मण्वतीकूले जम्भकस्यात्मजं नृपम्। ददर्श वासुदेवेन शेषितं पूर्ववैरिणा ॥२-२८-७॥

(Then, on the bank of the Carmaṇvatī, the king, son of Jambhaka, left (remaining) by the former enemy, was seen by Vāsudeva.)
Then, on the bank of the Carmaṇvatī river, Vāsudeva saw the king, the son of Jambhaka, who had been left behind by his former enemy. (2-28-7)
चक्रे तत्र स सङ्ग्रामं सह भोजेन भारत। स तमाजौ विनिर्जित्य दक्षिणाभिमुखो ययौ ॥२-२८-८॥

pāṇḍavaḥ paravīraghnaḥ sahadevaḥ pratāpavān। tato'sya sumahadyuddham āsīd bhīrubhayaṅkaram ॥2-28-12॥

सैन्यक्षयकरं चैव प्राणानां संशयाय च। चक्रे तस्य हि साहाय्यं भगवान्हव्यवाहनः ॥२-२८-१३॥
sainyakṣayakaraṃ caiva prāṇānāṃ saṃśayāya ca। cakre tasya hi sāhāyyaṃ bhagavānhavyavāhanaḥ ॥2-28-13॥
[सैन्य (sainya) - army; क्षय (kṣaya) - destruction; करं (karaṃ) - causing; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्राणानां (prāṇānāṃ) - of lives; संशयाय (saṃśayāya) - to danger; च (ca) - and; चक्रे (cakre) - made; तस्य (tasya) - for him; हि (hi) - indeed; साहाय्यं (sāhāyyaṃ) - assistance; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; हव्यवाहनः (havyavāhanaḥ) - Agni (the fire-god);]
(And indeed causing the destruction of the army and danger to lives, Agni, the Lord, made assistance for him.)
Agni, the Lord, created assistance for him, bringing about the destruction of the army and endangering lives. (2-28-13)
ततो हया रथा नागाः पुरुषाः कवचानि च। प्रदीप्तानि व्यदृश्यन्त सहदेवबले तदा ॥२-२८-१४॥
tato hayā rathā nāgāḥ puruṣāḥ kavacāni ca। pradīptāni vyadṛśyanta sahadevabale tadā ॥2-28-14॥

At that time, blazing horses, chariots, elephants, men, and armours were seen in Sahadeva's army. (2-28-14)
ततः सुसम्भ्रान्तमना बभूव कुरुनन्दनः। नोत्तरं प्रतिवक्तुं च शक्तोऽभूज्जनमेजय ॥२-२८-१५॥
tataḥ susambhrāntamanā babhūva kurunandanaḥ। nottaraṃ prativaktuṃ ca śakto'bhūjjanamejaya ॥2-28-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सुसम्भ्रान्तमना (susambhrāntamanā) - with greatly agitated mind; बभूव (babhūva) - became; कुरुनन्दनः (kurunandanaḥ) - descendant of Kuru; नोत्तरं (nottaraṃ) - not (having) answer; प्रतिवक्तुं (prativaktuṃ) - to reply; च (ca) - and; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - able; अभूत् (abhūt) - was; जनमेजयः (janamejayaḥ) - Janamejaya;]
(Then, with greatly agitated mind, the descendant of Kuru became (thus). Janamejaya was not able to reply with an answer.)

[तत्र (tatra) - there; माहिष्मतीवासी (māhiṣmatīvāsī) - resident of Māhiṣmatī; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; हव्यवाहनः (havyavāhanaḥ) - Agni (the fire-god); श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; निगृहीतः (nigṛhītaḥ) - was restrained; वै (vai) - indeed; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - formerly; पारदारिकः (pāradhārikaḥ) - adulterer;]
(There, the resident of Māhiṣmatī, the revered Agni, is heard (to have been) restrained formerly as an adulterer, indeed.)
There, it is said that the revered Agni, resident of Māhiṣmatī, was once restrained in the past for adultery. (2-28-17)
नीलस्य राज्ञः पूर्वेषामुपनीतश्च सोऽभवत्। तदा ब्राह्मणरूपेण चरमाणो यदृच्छया ॥२-२८-१८॥
nīlasya rājñaḥ pūrveṣām upanītaś ca so'bhavat। tadā brāhmaṇarūpeṇa caramāṇo yadṛcchayā ॥2-28-18॥

तं तु राजा यथाशास्त्रमन्वशाद्धार्मिकस्तदा। प्रजज्वाल ततः कोपाद्भगवान्हव्यवाहनः ॥२-२८-१९॥
taṃ tu rājā yathāśāstram anvaśād dhārmikas tadā। prajajvāla tataḥ kopād bhagavān havyavāhanaḥ ॥2-28-19॥

तं दृष्ट्वा विस्मितो राजा जगाम शिरसा कविम्। चक्रे प्रसादं च तदा तस्य राज्ञो विभावसुः ॥२-२८-२०॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā vismito rājā jagāma śirasā kavim। cakre prasādaṃ ca tadā tasya rājño vibhāvasuḥ ॥2-28-20॥

(Having seen him, the astonished king went with (his) head to the sage; then Agni (the Fire-god) made favor to that king.)
Seeing him, the king was astonished and bowed his head to the sage; then Agni, the Fire-god, bestowed his favor upon that king. (2-28-20)
वरेण छन्दयामास तं नृपं स्विष्टकृत्तमः। अभयं च स जग्राह स्वसैन्ये वै महीपतिः ॥२-२८-२१॥
vareṇa chandhayāmāsa taṃ nṛpaṃ sviṣṭakṛttamaḥ। abhayaṃ ca sa jagrāha svasainye vai mahīpatiḥ॥2-28-21॥
[वरेण (vareṇa) - by a boon; छन्दयामास (chandayāmāsa) - he gratified; तं (taṃ) - him; नृपं (nṛpaṃ) - the king; स्विष्टकृत्तमः (sviṣṭakṛttamaḥ) - the foremost performer of sacrifices; अभयं (abhayaṃ) - fearlessness; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; जग्राह (jagrāha) - granted; स्वसैन्ये (svasainye) - to his own army; वै (vai) - indeed; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the lord of the earth;]
(By a boon, the foremost performer of sacrifices gratified that king; and he granted fearlessness to his own army, indeed, the lord of the earth.)
By granting a boon, the foremost performer of sacrifices pleased the king; and the lord of the earth granted fearlessness to his own army. (2-28-21)
ततः प्रभृति ये केचिदज्ञानात्तां पुरीं नृपाः। जिगीषन्ति बलाद्राजंस्ते दह्यन्तीह वह्निना ॥२-२८-२२॥
tataḥ prabhṛti ye kecid ajñānāt tāṃ purīṃ nṛpāḥ। jigīṣanti balād rājaṃs te dahyantīha vahninā ॥2-28-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - onwards; ये (ye) - who; केचित् (kecit) - some; अज्ञानात् (ajñānāt) - from ignorance; तां (tāṃ) - that; पुरीम् (purīm) - city; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; जिगीषन्ति (jigīṣanti) - wish to conquer; बलात् (balāt) - by force; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ते (te) - they; दह्यन्ति (dahyanti) - are burned; इह (iha) - here; वह्निना (vahninā) - by fire;]
(From then onwards, whoever kings, out of ignorance, wish to conquer that city by force, O king, they are burned here by fire.)
From that time onwards, O king, any kings who, out of ignorance, attempt to conquer that city by force are here consumed by fire. (2-28-22)
तस्यां पुर्यां तदा चैव माहिष्मत्यां कुरूद्वह। बभूवुरनभिग्राह्या योषितश्छन्दतः किल ॥२-२८-२३॥
tasyāṃ puryāṃ tadā caiva māhiṣmatyāṃ kurūdvaha। babhūvuranabhigrāhyā yoṣitaśchandataḥ kila ॥2-28-23॥
[तस्याम् (tasyām) - in that (city); पुर्याम् (puryām) - in the city; तदा (tadā) - then; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; माहिष्मत्याम् (māhiṣmatyām) - in Māhiṣmatī; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O best of the Kurus; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - there were; अनभिग्राह्याः (anabhigrāhyāḥ) - unapproachable; योषितः (yoṣitaḥ) - women; छन्दतः (chandataḥ) - at will; किल (kila) - indeed;]
(In that city, then indeed, in Māhiṣmatī, O best of the Kurus, there were women unapproachable at will, indeed.)
O best of the Kurus, at that time in the city of Māhiṣmatī, there were women who could not be approached at will. (2-28-23)
एवमग्निर्वरं प्रादात्स्त्रीणामप्रतिवारणे। स्वैरिण्यस्तत्र नार्यो हि यथेष्टं प्रचरन्त्युत ॥२-२८-२४॥
evam agnir varaṃ prādāt strīṇām aprativāraṇe। svairiṇyas tatra nāryo hi yatheṣṭaṃ pracaranti uta ॥2-28-24॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni; (the fire god) वरम् (varam) - boon; प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; स्त्रीणाम् (strīṇām) - to women; अप्रतिवारणे (aprativāraṇe) - without opposition; स्वैरिण्यः (svairiṇyaḥ) - freedom; तत्र (tatra) - there; नार्यः (nāryaḥ) - women; हि (hi) - indeed; यथेष्टम् (yatheṣṭam) - as they wish; प्रचरन्ति (pracaranti) - move about; उत (uta) - also;]
(Thus Agni gave a boon to women without opposition. There, women indeed move about freely as they wish also.)
Thus, Agni granted women a boon without opposition; there, women indeed move about freely as they wish. (2-28-24)
वर्जयन्ति च राजानस्तद्राष्ट्रं पुरुषोत्तम। भयादग्नेर्महाराज तदा प्रभृति सर्वदा ॥२-२८-२५॥
varjayanti ca rājānas tadrāṣṭraṃ puruṣottama. bhayād agner mahārāja tadā prabhṛti sarvadā ॥2-28-25॥
[वर्जयन्ति (varjayanti) - they avoid; च (ca) - and; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; तत्-राष्ट्रम् (tat-rāṣṭram) - that kingdom; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣottama) - O best of men; भयात् (bhayāt) - out of fear; अग्नेः (agneḥ) - of Agni (fire); महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - from that time; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always;]
(They avoid, and kings, that kingdom, O best of men, out of fear of Agni, O great king, then, from that time, always.)
O best of men, from that time onward, O great king, all kings have always avoided that kingdom out of fear of Agni. (2-28-25)
सहदेवस्तु धर्मात्मा सैन्यं दृष्ट्वा भयार्दितम्। परीतमग्निना राजन्नाकम्पत यथा गिरिः ॥२-२८-२६॥
sahadevastu dharmātmā sainyaṃ dṛṣṭvā bhayārditam। parītamagninā rājannākampata yathā giriḥ ॥2-28-26॥
[सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; तु (tu) - but; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; सैन्यम् (sainyam) - army; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भयार्दितम् (bhayārditam) - afflicted by fear; परीतम् (parītam) - surrounded; अग्निना (agninā) - by fire; राजन् (rājan) - O king; न (na) - not; अकम्पत (ākampata) - was shaken; यथा (yathā) - like; गिरिः (giriḥ) - a mountain;]
(Sahadeva but righteous-souled army having seen afflicted by fear surrounded by fire O king not was shaken like a mountain.)
But Sahadeva, the righteous-souled, seeing the army afflicted by fear and surrounded by fire, O king, was not shaken, like a mountain. (2-28-26)
उपस्पृश्य शुचिर्भूत्वा सोऽब्रवीत्पावकं ततः। त्वदर्थोऽयं समारम्भः कृष्णवर्त्मन्नमोऽस्तु ते ॥२-२८-२७॥
upaspṛśya śucirbhūtvā so'bravītpāvakaṃ tataḥ। tvadartho'yaṃ samārambhaḥ kṛṣṇavartmannamo'stu te ॥2-28-27॥
[उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched near; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; सः (saḥ) - he; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पावकम् (pāvakam) - fire; ततः (tataḥ) - then; त्वदर्थः (tvadarthaḥ) - for your sake; अयम् (ayam) - this; समारम्भः (samārambhaḥ) - undertaking; कृष्णवर्त्मन् (kṛṣṇavartman) - O follower of Kṛṣṇa; नमः (namaḥ) - salutation; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; ते (te) - to you;]
(Having touched (water) and having become pure, he then said to the fire: "This undertaking is for your sake. O follower of Kṛṣṇa, let there be salutations to you." (2-28-27))
After purifying himself by touching water, he addressed the fire: "This endeavor is for your benefit. O follower of Kṛṣṇa, salutations to you." (2-28-27)
मुखं त्वमसि देवानां यज्ञस्त्वमसि पावक। पावनात्पावकश्चासि वहनाद्धव्यवाहनः ॥२-२८-२८॥
mukhaṃ tvam asi devānāṃ yajñas tvam asi pāvaka। pāvanāt pāvakaś cāsi vahanād dhavyavāhanaḥ ॥2-28-28॥
[मुखं (mukham) - mouth; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; पावक (pāvaka) - O Pāvaka (Agni); पावनात् (pāvanāt) - from the purifier; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - purifier; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - are; वहनात् (vahanāt) - from carrying; हव्यवाहनः (havyavāhanaḥ) - carrier of offerings;]
(You are the mouth of the gods, you are the sacrifice, O Pāvaka. From the purifier, you are the purifier, and from carrying, you are the carrier of offerings.)
You are the mouth of the gods and the sacrifice itself, O Pāvaka (Agni). You are the purifier, born from the purifier, and by your act of carrying, you are the carrier of offerings. (2-28-28)
वेदास्त्वदर्थं जाताश्च जातवेदास्ततो ह्यसि। यज्ञविघ्नमिमं कर्तुं नार्हस्त्वं हव्यवाहन ॥२-२८-२९॥
vedāstv-ad-arthaṃ jātāś-ca jātavedās-tato hy-asi। yajñavighnam-imaṃ kartuṃ nārhastvaṃ havyavāhana ॥2-28-29॥
[वेदाः (vedāḥ) - Vedas; त्वदर्थम् (tvad-artham) - for your sake; जाताः (jātāḥ) - have arisen; च (ca) - and; जातवेदाः (jātavedāḥ) - O Jātaveda (Agni); ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; हि (hi) - indeed; असि (asi) - you are; यज्ञविघ्नम् (yajñavighnam) - obstacle to sacrifice; इमम् (imam) - this; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; न (na) - not; अर्हः (arhaḥ) - are worthy; त्वम् (tvam) - you; हव्यवाहन (havyavāhana) - O carrier of oblations (Agni);]
(The Vedas have arisen for your sake, and O Jātaveda, therefore indeed you are (so). You are not worthy to do this obstacle to sacrifice, O Havyavāhana.)
The Vedas have come into being for your sake, O Jātaveda; therefore, you are indeed so. You, O Havyavāhana, are not fit to cause this obstruction to the sacrifice. (2-28-29)
एवमुक्त्वा तु माद्रेयः कुशैरास्तीर्य मेदिनीम्। विधिवत्पुरुषव्याघ्रः पावकं प्रत्युपाविशत् ॥२-२८-३०॥
evam-uktvā tu mādreyaḥ kuśaiḥ āstīrya medinīm। vidhivat puruṣa-vyāghraḥ pāvakaṃ pratyupāviśat ॥2-28-30॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तु (tu) - but; माद्रेयः (mādreyaḥ) - the son of Madri; कुशैः (kuśaiḥ) - with kusa grass; आस्तीर्य (āstīrya) - having spread; मेदिनीम् (medinīm) - the ground; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; पुरुषव्याघ्रः (puruṣa-vyāghraḥ) - tiger among men; पावकम् (pāvakam) - fire; प्रत्युपाविशत् (pratyupāviśat) - sat near;]
(Thus having spoken, but the son of Madri, having spread kusa grass on the ground according to rule, the tiger among men sat near the fire.)
Having thus spoken, the son of Madri, after properly spreading kusa grass on the ground, sat near the fire like a tiger among men. (2-28-30)
प्रमुखे सर्वसैन्यस्य भीतोद्विग्नस्य भारत। न चैनमत्यगाद्वह्निर्वेलामिव महोदधिः ॥२-२८-३१॥
pramukhe sarvasainyasya bhītodvignasya bhārata। na cainamatyagādvahnirvelāmiva mahodadhiḥ ॥2-28-31॥
[प्रमुखे (pramukhe) - at the forefront; सर्वसैन्यस्य (sarvasainyasya) - of the entire army; भीतोद्विग्नस्य (bhītodvignasya) - of the frightened and agitated; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; अत्यगात् (atyagāt) - crossed; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - the fire; वेलाम् (velām) - the boundary; इव (iva) - like; महोदधिः (mahodadhiḥ) - the great ocean;]
(At the forefront of the entire army, of the frightened and agitated, O Bhārata, the fire did not cross him, like the great ocean (does not cross) its boundary.)
O Bhārata, at the head of the entire army, though he was frightened and agitated, the fire did not surpass him, just as the great ocean does not cross its shore. (2-28-31)
तमभ्येत्य शनैर्वह्निरुवाच कुरुनन्दनम्। सहदेवं नृणां देवं सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वचः ॥२-२८-३२॥
tam abhyetya śanair vahnir uvāca kurunandanam। sahadevam nṛṇāṃ devam sāntvapūrvam idaṃ vacaḥ ॥2-28-32॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - Agni (the Fire-god); उवाच (uvāca) - said; कुरुनन्दनम् (kurunandanam) - O delight of the Kurus; सहदेवम् (sahadevam) - Sahadeva; नृणाम् (nṛṇām) - of men; देवम् (devam) - god; सान्त्वपूर्वम् (sāntvapūrvam) - with conciliation; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(Having approached him slowly, Agni said to the delight of the Kurus, to Sahadeva, the god among men, these words with conciliation.)
Agni slowly approached Sahadeva, the god among men, and spoke these conciliatory words to the delight of the Kurus. (2-28-32)
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ कौरव्य जिज्ञासेयं कृता मया। वेद्मि सर्वमभिप्रायं तव धर्मसुतस्य च ॥२-२८-३३॥
uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha kauravya jijñāseyaṃ kṛtā mayā। vedmi sarvam abhiprāyaṃ tava dharmasutasya ca ॥2-28-33॥
[उत्तिष्ठ (uttiṣṭha) - arise; (from the root √sthā, to stand) उत्तिष्ठ (uttiṣṭha) - arise; (from the root √sthā, to stand) कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; जिज्ञासे (jijñāse) - I wish to know; (from the root √jñā, to know, with desiderative prefix) इयम् (iyam) - this (feminine); कृता (kṛtā) - has been done; (from the root √kṛ, to do) मया (mayā) - by me; वेद्मि (vedmi) - I know; (from the root √vid, to know) सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अभिप्रायम् (abhiprāyam) - intention; (from abhi- + √prī, to go towards, aim) तव (tava) - your; धर्मसुतस्य (dharmasutasya) - of the son of Dharma; च (ca) - and;]
(Arise, arise, O Kauravya! This inquiry has been made by me. I know all the intention of you and of the son of Dharma.)
Arise, arise, O descendant of Kuru! I have made this inquiry. I know all the intentions of both you and the son of Dharma. (2-28-33)
मया तु रक्षितव्येयं पुरी भरतसत्तम। यावद्राज्ञोऽस्य नीलस्य कुलवंशधरा इति ॥ ईप्सितं तु करिष्यामि मनसस्तव पाण्डव ॥२-२८-३४॥
mayā tu rakṣitavyeyam purī bharatasattama। yāvad rājño'sya nīlasya kulavaṃśadharā iti ॥ īpsitaṃ tu kariṣyāmi manasas tava pāṇḍava ॥2-28-34॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; तु (tu) - but; रक्षितव्या (rakṣitavyā) - to be protected; इयम् (iyam) - this; पुरी (purī) - city; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; अस्य (asya) - his; नीलस्य (nīlasya) - Nila; कुलवंशधरा (kulavaṃśadharā) - bearing the family lineage; इति (iti) - thus; ईप्सितम् (īpsitam) - desired; तु (tu) - but; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; मनसः (manasaḥ) - of the mind; तव (tava) - your; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava;]
(But by me, this city, O best of the Bharatas, is to be protected as long as Nila, bearing the family lineage of this king, is (here), thus. But I shall do what is desired by your mind, O Pāṇḍava.)
O best of the Bharatas, I will protect this city as long as Nila, the bearer of this king's lineage, remains. Yet, O Pāṇḍava, I shall do what your heart desires. (2-28-34)
तत उत्थाय हृष्टात्मा प्राञ्जलिः शिरसानतः। पूजयामास माद्रेयः पावकं पुरुषर्षभः ॥२-२८-३५॥
tata utthāya hṛṣṭātmā prāñjaliḥ śirasānataḥ। pūjayāmāsa mādreyaḥ pāvakaṃ puruṣarṣabhaḥ ॥2-28-35॥
[तत् (tat) - then; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having arisen; हृष्टात्मा (hṛṣṭātmā) - with delighted mind; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (his) head; अनतः (anataḥ) - bowed; पूजयामास (pūjayāmāsa) - worshipped; माद्रेयः (mādreyaḥ) - the son of Madri; पावकं (pāvakaṃ) - Agni (the Fire-god); पुरुषर्षभः (puruṣarṣabhaḥ) - bull among men;]
(Then, having arisen, with delighted mind, with joined palms, with (his) head bowed, the son of Madri, bull among men, worshipped Agni.)
Then, the son of Madri, the best among men, rose joyfully, bowed his head with joined palms, and worshipped Agni. (2-28-35)
पावके विनिवृत्ते तु नीलो राजाभ्ययात्तदा। सत्कारेण नरव्याघ्रं सहदेवं युधां पतिम् ॥२-२८-३६॥
pāvake vinivṛtte tu nīlo rājābhyayāttadā। satkāreṇa naravyāghraṃ sahadevaṃ yudhāṃ patim ॥2-28-36॥
[पावके (pāvake) - when the fire; विनिवृत्ते (vinivṛtte) - had ceased; तु (tu) - but; नीलः (nīlaḥ) - Nila; राजा (rājā) - the king; अभ्ययात् (abhyayāt) - approached; तदा (tadā) - then; सत्कारेण (satkāreṇa) - with respect; नरव्याघ्रं (naravyāghram) - tiger among men; सहदेवम् (sahadevam) - Sahadeva; युधां (yudhām) - of the warriors; पतिम् (patim) - lord;]
(When the fire had ceased, then Nila the king approached Sahadeva, the tiger among men, lord of the warriors, with respect.)
When the fire was extinguished, King Nila respectfully approached Sahadeva, the tiger among men and lord of warriors. (2-28-36)
प्रतिगृह्य च तां पूजां करे च विनिवेश्य तम्। माद्रीसुतस्ततः प्रायाद्विजयी दक्षिणां दिशम् ॥२-२८-३७॥
pratigṛhya ca tāṃ pūjāṃ kare ca viniveśya tam। mādrīsutastataḥ prāyād vijayī dakṣiṇāṃ diśam ॥2-28-37॥
[प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having received; च (ca) - and; तां (tāṃ) - that; पूजां (pūjām) - honor; करे (kare) - in (his) hand; च (ca) - and; विनिवेश्य (viniveśya) - having placed; तम् (tam) - it; माद्रीसुतः (mādrīsutaḥ) - the son of Mādrī; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रायात् (prāyāt) - departed; विजयी (vijayī) - the victorious one; दक्षिणां (dakṣiṇām) - southern; दिशम् (diśam) - direction;]
(Having received that honor and having placed it in his hand, the son of Mādrī, the victorious one, then departed to the southern direction.)
Having accepted that honor and placing it in his hand, the victorious son of Mādrī then set out towards the southern direction. (2-28-37)
त्रैपुरं स वशे कृत्वा राजानममितौजसम्। निजग्राह महाबाहुस्तरसा पोतनेश्वरम् ॥२-२८-३८॥
traipuraṃ sa vaśe kṛtvā rājānamamitaujasam। nijagrāha mahābāhustarasā potaneśvaram ॥2-28-38॥
[त्रैपुरम् (traipuraṃ) - of Tripura; स (sa) - he; वशे (vaśe) - under control; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; अमितौजसम् (amitaujasam) - of immeasurable energy; निजग्राह (nijagrāha) - seized; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed one; तरसा (tarasā) - with force; पोतनेश्वरम् (potaneśvaram) - the lord of the ship;]
(He, having brought the king of Tripura of immeasurable energy under control, the mighty-armed one seized the lord of the ship with force.)
He subdued the king of Tripura, who possessed immeasurable energy, and with his great strength, the mighty-armed hero forcefully captured the lord of the ship. (2-28-38)
आहृतिं कौशिकाचार्यं यत्नेन महता ततः। वशे चक्रे महाबाहुः सुराष्ट्राधिपतिं तथा ॥२-२८-३९॥
āhṛtiṃ kauśikācāryaṃ yatnena mahatā tataḥ। vaśe cakre mahābāhuḥ surāṣṭrādhipatiṃ tathā ॥2-28-39॥
[आहृतिं (āhṛtim) - bringing; offering; कौशिकाचार्यं (kauśikācāryam) - Kauśika teacher; यत्नेन (yatnena) - with effort; महता (mahatā) - great; by great (means); ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; वशे (vaśe) - under control; in power; चक्रे (cakre) - made; placed; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; सुराष्ट्राधिपतिं (surāṣṭrādhipatim) - the lord of Surāṣṭra; तथा (tathā) - likewise; in the same way;]
(Bringing the Kauśika teacher with great effort then, the mighty-armed made the lord of Surāṣṭra likewise under control.)
Then, having brought the Kauśika teacher with great effort, the mighty-armed one also brought the lord of Surāṣṭra under his control. (2-28-39)
सुराष्ट्रविषयस्थश्च प्रेषयामास रुक्मिणे। राज्ञे भोजकटस्थाय महामात्राय धीमते ॥२-२८-४०॥
surāṣṭraviṣayasthaś ca preṣayām āsa rukmiṇe। rājñe bhojakaṭasthāya mahāmātrāya dhīmate ॥2-28-40॥
[सुराष्ट्र (surāṣṭra) - Su-rāṣṭra; (a region in western India); विषयस्थः (viṣayasthaḥ) - residing in the territory; (viṣaya - territory, stha - residing); च (ca) - and; प्रेषयाम् (preṣayām) - sent; (from pra-√iṣ, to send forth); आस (āsa) - he; (from ās, to be, here as auxiliary); रुक्मिणे (rukmiṇe) - to Rukmiṇī; (dative case, to Rukmiṇī); राज्ञे (rājñe) - to the king; (dative case, rājñā - king); भोजकटस्थाय (bhojakaṭasthāya) - to the one residing in Bhojakaṭa; (bhojakaṭa - a city, sthāya - residing); महामात्राय (mahāmātrāya) - to the chief minister; (mahā - great, mātra - measure/minister); धीमते (dhīmate) - to the wise; (dhīmat - wise, dative singular);]
(And the one residing in the territory of Surāṣṭra sent (a message) to Rukmiṇī, to the king, to the one residing in Bhojakaṭa, to the chief minister, to the wise.)
The ruler of the Surāṣṭra region sent a message to Rukmiṇī, to the king, to the resident of Bhojakaṭa, to the chief minister, and to the wise one. (2-28-40)
भीष्मकाय स धर्मात्मा साक्षादिन्द्रसखाय वै। स चास्य ससुतो राजन्प्रतिजग्राह शासनम् ॥२-२८-४१॥
bhīṣmakāya sa dharmātmā sākṣādindrasakhāya vai। sa cāsya sasuto rājan pratijagrāha śāsanam ॥2-28-41॥
