Pancharatra: Nakula’s conquest of the west. Regions.
Vaiśampāyana said.
But now I shall recount the deeds and victories of Nakula, and the hope conquered by Vāsudeva, as the lord achieved them. (2-29-1)
Having left Khāṇḍavaprastha, the wise one set out with a great army towards the west, having made that his aim. (2-29-2)
By the great lion's roar, the warriors' roaring, and the sounds of the chariot wheels, shaking this very earth. (2-29-3)
Then he approached Rohitaka, the delightful place rich in cows, horses, wealth, and grain, which was dear to Kārttikeya. (2-29-4)
There, a great battle took place between heroes and intoxicated peacocks; and likewise, the desert land was entirely filled in many ways with other things. (2-29-5)
The illustrious one brought the Śairīṣaka and Maheccha tribes under his sway, and also subdued the Śibī, Trigarta, Ambaṣṭha, Mālava, and Pañcakarpaṭa peoples. (2-29-6)
In this way, the Madhyamikas, the garden-keepers, and the Brāhmaṇas were addressed; then, after turning again, those dwelling in the Puṣkara forest were also addressed. (2-29-7)
The foremost among men defeated the assemblies, festivals, and gatherings, as well as the powerful chieftains who resided on the banks of the Sindhu river. (2-29-8)
The Śūdra and Abhīra groups, as well as those who have settled along the Sarasvatī, those who live by fishing, and those who dwell in the mountains. (2-29-9)
He traversed the whole of Pañcanada and other regions, as well as Uttarajyotika and the city of Vṛndāṭaka; with great brilliance, he subdued the gatekeeper by force. (2-29-10)
Yudhiṣṭhira, the Pāṇḍava, brought all the kings of the Ramaṭhas, Hārahūṇas, and the western regions under his command. (2-29-11)
While stationed there, the overlord sent a message to Vāsudeva; and he accepted his command along with ten kingdoms. (2-29-12)
Then, after reaching Śākala and breaking the casket of the Madras, the powerful one affectionately brought his maternal uncle Śalya under his control. (2-29-13)
He, having been honored there by the king as one worthy of honor, O lord of men, took many gems and set out, O lord of warriors. (2-29-14)
Then he brought under his control all the extremely fierce foreigners, including the Pahlavas and Barbaras, who dwelled in the ocean's womb. (2-29-15)
Then Nakula, the best among men and knower of various paths, took the jewels, subdued the kings, and returned. (2-29-16)
O great king, ten (people) with difficulty brought thousands of elephants and the treasure of that great-souled one, as if it were great wealth. (2-29-17)
Having gone to Indraprastha, the illustrious son of Madri then approached the heroic Yudhishthira and offered him the wealth. (2-29-18)
In this way, Nakula conquered the western region, which was protected by Varuṇa and had already been subdued by Vāsudeva, O foremost of the Bharatas. (2-29-19)
