Core-Pancharatra: Wealth accumulates because of righteous rule. Yudhisthira decides to perform a sacrifice.

rakṣaṇāddharmarājasya satyasya paripālanāt। śatrūṇāṃ kṣapaṇāccaiva svakarmaniratāḥ prajāḥ ॥2-30-1॥

(From protection by the king of dharma, from observance of truth, from destruction of enemies, and indeed, the subjects engaged in their own duties.)
Because of the king's protection of dharma, adherence to truth, and destruction of enemies, the subjects remain engaged in their own duties. (2-30-1)
बलीनां सम्यगादानाद्धर्मतश्चानुशासनात्। निकामवर्षी पर्जन्यः स्फीतो जनपदोऽभवत् ॥२-३०-२॥
balīnāṃ samyagādānāddharmataścānuśāsanāt। nikāmavarṣī parjanyaḥ sphīto janapado'bhavat ॥2-30-2॥
[बलीनाम् (balīnāṃ) - of the strong; of the powerful; of the mighty; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; rightly; correctly; आदानात् (ādānāt) - from acceptance; from taking; from collection; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - according to dharma; by righteousness; च (ca) - and; अनुशासनात् (anuśāsanāt) - from discipline; from instruction; from governance; निकामवर्षी (nikāmavarṣī) - abundantly raining; pouring as desired; पर्जन्यः (parjanyaḥ) - the rain-cloud; the god of rain; स्फीतः (sphītaḥ) - prosperous; flourishing; जनपदः (janapadaḥ) - the country; the people; the land; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; was; happened;]
(From the proper acceptance by the strong, and from discipline according to dharma, the rain-cloud poured abundantly; the country became prosperous.)
Because the powerful collected taxes properly and governed righteously, rain fell as desired and the land became prosperous. (2-30-2)
सर्वारम्भाः सुप्रवृत्ता गोरक्षं कर्षणं वणिक्। विशेषात्सर्वमेवैतत्सञ्जज्ञे राजकर्मणः ॥२-३०-३॥
sarvārambhāḥ supravṛttā gorakṣaṃ karṣaṇaṃ vaṇik। viśeṣātsarvamevaitatsañjajñe rājakarmaṇaḥ ॥2-30-3॥

दस्युभ्यो वञ्चकेभ्यो वा राजन्प्रति परस्परम्। राजवल्लभतश्चैव नाश्रूयन्त मृषा गिरः ॥२-३०-४॥
dasyubhyo vañcakebhyo vā rājan prati parasparam। rājavallabhataś caiva nāśrūyanta mṛṣā giraḥ ॥2-30-4॥

O king, neither from robbers nor from deceivers, nor even among the king's favorites, were false words ever heard among each other. (2-30-4)
अवर्षं चातिवर्षं च व्याधिपावकमूर्छनम्। सर्वमेतत्तदा नासीद्धर्मनित्ये युधिष्ठिरे ॥२-३०-५॥
avarṣaṃ cātivarṣaṃ ca vyādhipāvakamūrcchanam। sarvam etat tadā nāsīddharmanitye yudhiṣṭhire ॥2-30-5॥
[अवर्षम् (avarṣam) - absence of rain; च (ca) - and; अतिवर्षम् (ativarṣam) - excessive rain; च (ca) - and; व्याधि (vyādhi) - disease; पावक (pāvaka) - fire; मूर्छनम् (mūrcchanam) - fainting; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; धर्मनित्ये (dharmanitye) - in the one devoted to dharma; युधिष्ठिरे (yudhiṣṭhire) - in Yudhishthira;]
(Absence of rain and excessive rain and disease, fire, fainting—all this then was not (present) in the one devoted to dharma, in Yudhishthira.)
There was neither drought nor excessive rain, nor disease, fire, or fainting; none of these existed when Yudhishthira, who was devoted to dharma, ruled. (2-30-5)
प्रियं कर्तुमुपस्थातुं बलिकर्म स्वभावजम्। अभिहर्तुं नृपा जग्मुर्नान्यैः कार्यैः पृथक्पृथक् ॥२-३०-६॥
priyaṃ kartum upasthātuṃ balikarma svabhāvajam। abhihartuṃ nṛpā jagmur nānyaiḥ kāryaiḥ pṛthakpṛthak ॥2-30-6॥
[प्रियं (priyam) - dear; pleasant; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; to perform; उपस्थातुम् (upasthātum) - to approach; to attend; बलिकर्म (balikarma) - offering ritual; स्वभावजम् (svabhāvajam) - arising from one's own nature; innate; अभिहर्तुम् (abhihartum) - to offer; to present; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; proceeded; न (na) - not; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; with other; कार्यैः (kāryaiḥ) - actions; duties; पृथक्पृथक् (pṛthakpṛthak) - separately; individually;]
(To do what is dear, to approach (for) the offering ritual arising from one's own nature, to offer (it), the kings went, not for other actions, separately.)
The kings went, each separately, not for any other purpose, but to perform the offering ritual that was dear and innate to their nature. (2-30-6)
धर्म्यैर्धनागमैस्तस्य ववृधे निचयो महान्। कर्तुं यस्य न शक्येत क्षयो वर्षशतैरपि ॥२-३०-७॥
dharmyair dhanāgamais tasya vavṛdhe nicayo mahān। kartuṃ yasya na śakyeta kṣayo varṣaśatair api ॥2-30-7॥
[धर्म्यैः (dharmyaiḥ) - by righteous; by what is in accordance with dharma; धनागमैः (dhanāgamaiḥ) - by means of acquisition of wealth; by sources of wealth; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; ववृधे (vavṛdhe) - increased; grew; निचयः (nicayaḥ) - accumulation; heap; महान् (mahān) - great; large; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; to make; यस्यम् (yasya) - whose; न (na) - not; शक्येत (śakyeta) - could be possible; could be done; क्षयः (kṣayaḥ) - diminution; decrease; वर्षशतैः (varṣaśataiḥ) - by hundreds of years; अपि (api) - even;]
(By righteous means of acquiring wealth, his great accumulation increased; whose diminution could not be effected even in hundreds of years.)
His great accumulation, acquired by righteous means of wealth, increased so much that even in hundreds of years, its diminution could not be accomplished. (2-30-7)
स्वकोशस्य परीमाणं कोष्ठस्य च महीपतिः। विज्ञाय राजा कौन्तेयो यज्ञायैव मनो दधे ॥२-३०-८॥
svakośasya parīmāṇaṃ koṣṭhasya ca mahīpatiḥ। vijñāya rājā kaunteyo yajñāyaiva mano dadhe ॥2-30-8॥
[स्वकोशस्य (svakośasya) - of his own treasury; परीमाणं (parīmāṇam) - the measure; कोष्ठस्य (koṣṭhasya) - of the granary; च (ca) - and; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having ascertained; राजा (rājā) - the king; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; यज्ञाय (yajñāya) - for the sacrifice; एव (eva) - indeed; मनो (mano) - mind; दधे (dadhe) - set;]
(Having ascertained the measure of his own treasury and the granary, the king, the son of Kunti, indeed set his mind for the sacrifice.)
After determining the extent of his treasury and granary, the king Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, resolved to perform the sacrifice. (2-30-8)
सुहृदश्चैव तं सर्वे पृथक्च सह चाब्रुवन्। यज्ञकालस्तव विभो क्रियतामत्र साम्प्रतम् ॥२-३०-९॥
suhṛdaś caiva taṃ sarve pṛthak ca saha cābruvan। yajñakālas tava vibho kriyatām atra sāmpratam ॥2-30-9॥
[सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तं (taṃ) - him; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; च (ca) - and; सह (saha) - together; च (ca) - and; अब्रुवन् (abrūvan) - said; यज्ञकालः (yajñakālaḥ) - sacrifice time; तव (tava) - your; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; अत्र (atra) - here; साम्प्रतम् (sāmpratam) - at present;]
(Friends and indeed all (of them), him, separately and together, and said: "The time for sacrifice, your, O mighty one, let it be done here at present." (2-30-9))
All the friends, both individually and together, said to him: "O mighty one, let the time for your sacrifice be arranged here and now." (2-30-9)
अथैवं ब्रुवतामेव तेषामभ्याययौ हरिः। ऋषिः पुराणो वेदात्मा दृश्यश्चापि विजानताम् ॥२-३०-१०॥
athaivaṃ bruvatāmeva teṣām abhyāyayau hariḥ। ṛṣiḥ purāṇo vedātmā dṛśyaś cāpi vijānatām ॥2-30-10॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एवम् (evam) - thus; ब्रुवताम् (bruvatām) - of those speaking; एव (eva) - indeed; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अभ्याययौ (abhyāyayau) - approached; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari (Viṣṇu); ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; पुराणः (purāṇaḥ) - ancient; वेदात्मा (vedātmā) - whose essence is the Veda; दृश्यः (dṛśyaḥ) - visible; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; विजानताम् (vijānatām) - to those who know;]
(Then, thus, as they were speaking, indeed, of them, Hari approached; the sage, ancient, whose essence is the Veda, visible also to those who know.)
Then, as they were thus speaking, Hari, the ancient sage whose essence is the Veda, who is visible also to the wise, approached them. (2-30-10)
जगतस्तस्थुषां श्रेष्ठः प्रभवश्चाप्ययश्च ह। भूतभव्यभवन्नाथः केशवः केशिसूदनः ॥२-३०-११॥
jagatas tasthuṣāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ prabhavaś cāpyayaś ca ha। bhūtabhavyabhavannāthaḥ keśavaḥ keśisūdanaḥ ॥2-30-11॥
[जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; तस्थुषाम् (tasthuṣām) - of the stationary (beings); श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; प्रभवः (prabhavaḥ) - origin; च (ca) - and; अप्ययः (apyayaḥ) - dissolution; च (ca) - and; ह (ha) - indeed; भूत (bhūta) - past; भव्य (bhavya) - future; भवत् (bhavat) - present; नाथः (nāthaḥ) - lord; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keśava; केशिसूदनः (keśisūdanaḥ) - slayer of Keśi;]
(Of the world and of the stationary (beings), the best, origin and dissolution indeed; lord of past, future, and present, Keśava, slayer of Keśi.)
Keśava, the slayer of Keśi, is the supreme among the world and the stationary beings, the origin and dissolution; he is the lord of the past, future, and present. (2-30-11)
प्राकारः सर्ववृष्णीनामापत्स्वभयदोऽरिहा। बलाधिकारे निक्षिप्य संहत्यानकदुन्दुभिम् ॥२-३०-१२॥
prākāraḥ sarvavṛṣṇīnām āpatsu abhayadaḥ arihā। bala-adhikāre nikṣipya saṃhatya anaka-dundubhim ॥2-30-12॥
[प्राकारः (prākāraḥ) - rampart; सर्ववृष्णीनाम् (sarva-vṛṣṇīnām) - of all Vṛṣṇis; आपत्सु (āpatsu) - in dangers; अभयदः (abhayadaḥ) - giver of fearlessness; अरिहा (arihā) - destroyer of enemies; बलाधिकारे (bala-adhikāre) - in the command of the army; निक्षिप्य (nikṣipya) - having placed; संहत्या (saṃhatya) - having assembled; अनकदुन्दुभिम् (anaka-dundubhim) - the kettledrum;]
(The rampart of all the Vṛṣṇis, giver of fearlessness in dangers, destroyer of enemies, having placed the kettledrum after assembling it in the command of the army.)
The rampart of all the Vṛṣṇis, who gave fearlessness in times of danger and destroyed enemies, had the kettledrum assembled and placed under the command of the army. (2-30-12)
उच्चावचमुपादाय धर्मराजाय माधवः। धनौघं पुरुषव्याघ्रो बलेन महता वृतः ॥२-३०-१३॥
uccāvacam upādāya dharmarājāya mādhavaḥ। dhanaughaṃ puruṣavyāghro balena mahatā vṛtaḥ ॥2-30-13॥
[उच्चावचम् (uccāvacam) - high and low; (i.e., various kinds;) उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken; (having brought;) धर्मराजाय (dharmarājāya) - to Dharmarāja; (to Yudhiṣṭhira;) माधवः (mādhavaḥ) - Mādhava; (Kṛṣṇa;) धनौघम् (dhanaugham) - a multitude of wealth; (heap of riches;) पुरुषव्याघ्रः (puruṣavyāghraḥ) - tiger among men; (heroic man;) बलेन (balena) - by strength; (with force;) महता (mahatā) - great; (mighty;) वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded; (accompanied; covered;);]
(Having taken various kinds (of wealth), Mādhava (Kṛṣṇa), the tiger among men, surrounded by great strength, (brought it) to Dharmarāja. )
Mādhava, the tiger among men, accompanied by great strength, brought a multitude of wealth of various kinds to Dharmarāja. (2-30-13)
तं धनौघमपर्यन्तं रत्नसागरमक्षयम्। नादयन्रथघोषेण प्रविवेश पुरोत्तमम् ॥२-३०-१४॥
taṃ dhanaugham-aparyantaṃ ratnasāgaram-akṣayam। nādayan rathaghoṣeṇa praviveśa purottamam ॥2-30-14॥

He, making the sound of his chariot resound, entered the supreme city, which was an endless stream of wealth and an inexhaustible ocean of jewels. (2-30-14)
असूर्यमिव सूर्येण निवातमिव वायुना। कृष्णेन समुपेतेन जहृषे भारतं पुरम् ॥२-३०-१५॥
asūryam iva sūryeṇa nivātam iva vāyunā। kṛṣṇena samupetena jahṛṣe bhārataṃ puram ॥2-30-15॥
[असूर्यम् (asūryam) - without sun; इव (iva) - like; सूर्येण (sūryeṇa) - by the sun; निवातम् (nivātam) - without wind; इव (iva) - like; वायुना (vāyunā) - by the wind; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; समुपेतेन (samupetena) - having approached; जहृषे (jahṛṣe) - rejoiced; भारतं (bhārataṃ) - Bhārata; पुरम् (puram) - city;]
(Like a place without sun by the sun, like a place without wind by the wind, by Kṛṣṇa having approached, the city of Bhārata rejoiced.)
Just as a place without sunlight is brightened by the sun, and a windless place is enlivened by the wind, so too, when Kṛṣṇa arrived, the city of Bhārata was filled with joy. (2-30-15)
तं मुदाभिसमागम्य सत्कृत्य च यथाविधि। सम्पृष्ट्वा कुशलं चैव सुखासीनं युधिष्ठिरः ॥२-३०-१६॥
taṃ mudābhisamāgamya satkṛtya ca yathāvidhi। sampṛṣṭvā kuśalaṃ caiva sukhāsīnaṃ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥2-30-16॥

(Yudhishthira, having approached him with joy, having honored (him) and according to rule, having inquired (about his) welfare and indeed (seeing him) comfortably seated.)
Yudhishthira approached him joyfully, honored him as per the proper custom, inquired about his well-being, and saw that he was comfortably seated. (2-30-16)
धौम्यद्वैपायनमुखैरृत्विग्भिः पुरुषर्षभः। भीमार्जुनयमैश्चापि सहितः कृष्णमब्रवीत् ॥२-३०-१७॥
dhaumyadvaipāyanamukhairṛtvigbhiḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ। bhīmārjunayamaiścāpi sahitaḥ kṛṣṇamabravīt ॥2-30-17॥

(The best among men, together with Bhīma, Arjuna, Yudhiṣṭhira and the twins, and also accompanied by Kṛṣṇa, was addressed by the officiating priests headed by Dhaumya and Dvaipāyana.)

त्वत्कृते पृथिवी सर्वा मद्वशे कृष्ण वर्तते। धनं च बहु वार्ष्णेय त्वत्प्रसादादुपार्जितम् ॥२-३०-१८॥
tvatkṛte pṛthivī sarvā madvaśe kṛṣṇa vartate। dhanaṃ ca bahu vārṣṇeya tvatprasādādupārjitam ॥2-30-18॥
[त्वत्कृते (tvatkṛte) - for your sake; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; मद्वशे (madvaśe) - under my control; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; वर्तते (vartate) - exists; धनं (dhanaṃ) - wealth; च (ca) - and; बहु (bahu) - much; वार्ष्णेय (vārṣṇeya) - O descendant of Vṛṣṇi; त्वत्प्रसादात् (tvatprasādāt) - by your favor; उपार्जितम् (upārjitam) - acquired;]
(For your sake, the entire earth is under my control, O Kṛṣṇa. And much wealth, O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, has been acquired by your favor.)
O Kṛṣṇa, for your sake the whole earth is under my control, and much wealth, O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, has been gained by your grace. (2-30-18)
सोऽहमिच्छामि तत्सर्वं विधिवद्देवकीसुत। उपयोक्तुं द्विजाग्र्येषु हव्यवाहे च माधव ॥२-३०-१९॥
so'ham icchāmi tat sarvaṃ vidhivad devakīsuta। upayoktuṃ dvijāgryeṣu havyavāhe ca mādhava ॥2-30-19॥

(He—I—desire—that—all—according to rule—O son of Devakī—to employ—among the foremost Brāhmaṇas—in the sacrificial fire—and—O Mādhava.)
O son of Devakī, O Mādhava, I desire to employ all that, according to rule, among the foremost Brāhmaṇas and in the sacrificial fire. (2-30-19)
तदहं यष्टुमिच्छामि दाशार्ह सहितस्त्वया। अनुजैश्च महाबाहो तन्मानुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥२-३०-२०॥
tad ahaṃ yaṣṭum icchāmi dāśārha sahitas tvayā | anujaiś ca mahābāho tan mānujñātum arhasi ||2-30-20||

(That I to perform sacrifice wish, O descendant of Dasharha, together with you, with younger brothers and O mighty-armed, that me to permit you ought.)
O mighty-armed descendant of Dasharha, I wish to perform a sacrifice together with you and my younger brothers; therefore, you ought to permit me to do so. (2-30-20)
स दीक्षापय गोविन्द त्वमात्मानं महाभुज। त्वयीष्टवति दाशार्ह विपाप्मा भविता ह्यहम् ॥२-३०-२१॥
sa dīkṣāpaya govinda tvam ātmānaṃ mahābhuja। tvayi iṣṭavati dāśārha vipāpmā bhavitā hy aham ॥2-30-21॥

(He, initiate, Govinda, you, self, O mighty-armed. In you, when sacrifice is performed, O descendant of Dasharha, free from sin, will become indeed I.)
O mighty-armed Govinda, you should initiate yourself. When the sacrifice is performed by you, O descendant of Dasharha, I will indeed become free from sin. (2-30-21)
मां वाप्यभ्यनुजानीहि सहैभिरनुजैर्विभो। अनुज्ञातस्त्वया कृष्ण प्राप्नुयां क्रतुमुत्तमम् ॥२-३०-२२॥
māṃ vāpyabhyanujānīhi sahaibhiranujairvibho। anujñātastvayā kṛṣṇa prāpnuyāṃ kratumuttamam ॥2-30-22॥

(Me or also please permit together with these younger brothers, O lord. Having been permitted by you, Kṛṣṇa, may I obtain the highest sacrifice.)
O lord, please permit me, or at least together with these younger brothers. If permitted by you, Kṛṣṇa, may I attain the highest sacrifice. (2-30-22)
तं कृष्णः प्रत्युवाचेदं बहूक्त्वा गुणविस्तरम्। त्वमेव राजशार्दूल सम्राडर्हो महाक्रतुम् ॥ सम्प्राप्नुहि त्वया प्राप्ते कृतकृत्यास्ततो वयम् ॥२-३०-२३॥
taṃ kṛṣṇaḥ pratyuvācedaṃ bahūktvā guṇavistaram। tvameva rājaśārdūla samrāḍarho mahākratum ॥ samprāpnuhi tvayā prāpte kṛtakṛtyāstato vayam ॥2-30-23॥

(Kṛṣṇa replied to him this, having spoken much in detail about qualities: "You indeed, tiger among kings, are worthy of the great sacrifice as emperor. Attain it; when it is attained by you, then we will have accomplished our purpose." (2-30-23))
Kṛṣṇa, after elaborating at length on the virtues, replied to him: "O tiger among kings, you alone are worthy to be the emperor and perform the great sacrifice. Attain it; when you have achieved it, then our purpose will be fulfilled." (2-30-23)
यजस्वाभीप्सितं यज्ञं मयि श्रेयस्यवस्थिते। नियुङ्क्ष्व चापि मां कृत्ये सर्वं कर्तास्मि ते वचः ॥२-३०-२४॥
yajasvābhīpsitaṃ yajñaṃ mayi śreyasyavasthite। niyuṅkṣva cāpi māṃ kṛtye sarvaṃ kartāsmi te vacaḥ ॥2-30-24॥

(Sacrifice the desired sacrifice in me, who am established in the superior; appoint also me in the act; I am the doer of all your word.)
Offer the sacrifice you desire to me, who am established in the highest good; also appoint me in the action; I will accomplish all your command. (2-30-24)

(Fruitful, O Kṛṣṇa, is the resolve, and success is certain for me, for whom you, O Hṛṣīkeśa, have appeared as desired.)
O Kṛṣṇa, my resolve is fruitful and success is assured, for you, O Hṛṣīkeśa, have come to me just as I wished. (2-30-25)

(But, permitted by Kṛṣṇa, the Pāṇḍava together with his brothers began to undertake the means for the Rājasūya. )
But, having received Kṛṣṇa's permission, the Pāṇḍava, along with his brothers, began preparations for the Rājasūya sacrifice. (2-30-26)
तत आज्ञापयामास पाण्डवोऽरिनिबर्हणः। सहदेवं युधां श्रेष्ठं मन्त्रिणश्चैव सर्वशः ॥२-३०-२७॥
tat ājñāpayāmāsa pāṇḍavo'rinibarhaṇaḥ। sahadevaṃ yudhāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ mantriṇaścaiva sarvaśaḥ ॥2-30-27॥

Then the Pāṇḍava, destroyer of enemies, ordered Sahadeva, the foremost among warriors, and all the ministers in every respect. (2-30-27)
अस्मिन्क्रतौ यथोक्तानि यज्ञाङ्गानि द्विजातिभिः। तथोपकरणं सर्वं मङ्गलानि च सर्वशः ॥२-३०-२८॥
asmin-kratau yathoktāni yajñāṅgāni dvijātibhiḥ| tathopakararaṇaṁ sarvaṁ maṅgalāni ca sarvaśaḥ ॥2-30-28॥
[अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; क्रतौ (kratau) - sacrifice; यथोक्तानि (yathoktāni) - as stated; यज्ञाङ्गानि (yajñāṅgāni) - sacrificial components; द्विजातिभिः (dvijātibhiḥ) - by the twice-born; तथा (tathā) - likewise; उपकरणं (upakaraṇam) - instruments; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; मङ्गलानि (maṅgalāni) - auspicious things; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely;]
(In this sacrifice, as stated, the sacrificial components by the twice-born, likewise all instruments and all auspicious things entirely.)

अधियज्ञांश्च सम्भारान्धौम्योक्तान्क्षिप्रमेव हि। समानयन्तु पुरुषा यथायोगं यथाक्रमम् ॥२-३०-२९॥
adhiyajñāṃś ca sambhārān dhaumyoktān kṣipram eva hi। samānayantu puruṣā yathāyogaṃ yathākramam ॥2-30-29॥

(And let the men quickly bring together the sacrificial articles and materials as instructed by Dhaumya, as appropriate and in proper order, indeed.)

इन्द्रसेनो विशोकश्च पूरुश्चार्जुनसारथिः। अन्नाद्याहरणे युक्ताः सन्तु मत्प्रियकाम्यया ॥२-३०-३०॥

तद्वाक्यसमकालं तु कृतं सर्वमवेदयत्। सहदेवो युधां श्रेष्ठो धर्मराजे महात्मनि ॥२-३०-३२॥
tadvākyasamakālaṃ tu kṛtaṃ sarvam avedayat। sahadevo yudhāṃ śreṣṭho dharmarāje mahātmani ॥2-30-32॥

Sahadeva, the foremost among warriors, immediately informed the great-souled Dharmarāja of all that had been done. (2-30-32)
ततो द्वैपायनो राजन्नृत्विजः समुपानयत्। वेदानिव महाभागान्साक्षान्मूर्तिमतो द्विजान् ॥२-३०-३३॥
tato dvaipāyano rājannṛtvijaḥ samupānayat। vedāniva mahābhāgānsākṣānmūrtimato dvijān ॥2-30-33॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्वैपायनः (dvaipāyanaḥ) - Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa); राजन् (rājan) - O king; ऋत्विजः (ṛtvijaḥ) - priests; समुपानयत् (samupānayat) - brought together; वेदान् (vedān) - the Vedas; इव (iva) - like; महाभागान् (mahābhāgān) - greatly fortunate; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; मूर्तिमतः (mūrtimataḥ) - embodied; द्विजान् (dvijān) - twice-born (Brāhmaṇas);]
(Then Dvaipāyana, O king, brought together the priests, the greatly fortunate twice-born, directly embodied like the Vedas.)
Then Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa), O king, assembled the priests—those greatly fortunate Brāhmaṇas, who were like the very embodiment of the Vedas. (2-30-33)
स्वयं ब्रह्मत्वमकरोत्तस्य सत्यवतीसुतः। धनञ्जयानामृषभः सुसामा सामगोऽभवत् ॥२-३०-३४॥
svayaṃ brahmatvamakarottasya satyavatīsutaḥ। dhanañjayānāmṛṣabhaḥ susāmā sāmago'bhavat ॥2-30-34॥
[स्वयं (svayam) - himself; ब्रह्मत्वम् (brahmatvam) - the state of being Brahmā; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; तस्य (tasya) - of him; सत्यवतीसुतः (satyavatīsutaḥ) - the son of Satyavatī; धनञ्जयानाम् (dhanañjayānām) - of the Dhanañjayas; ऋषभः (ṛṣabhaḥ) - the best; सुसामा (susāmā) - Susāmā; सामगः (sāmagaḥ) - the singer of Sāma; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Himself the son of Satyavatī made him attain the state of being Brahmā. Among the Dhanañjayas, the best, Susāmā, became a singer of Sāma.)

याज्ञवल्क्यो बभूवाथ ब्रह्मिष्ठोऽध्वर्युसत्तमः। पैलो होता वसोः पुत्रो धौम्येन सहितोऽभवत् ॥२-३०-३५॥
yājñavalkyo babhūvātha brahmiṣṭho'dhvaryusattamaḥ। pailo hotā vasoḥ putro dhaumyena sahito'bhavat ॥2-30-35॥

(Yājñavalkya became then most learned in the Vedas, the best among adhvaryu priests. Paila, the hotṛ priest, son of Vasu, together with Dhaumya, became.)

eteṣāṃ śiṣyavargāś ca putrāś ca bharatarṣabha। babhūvur hotragāḥ sarve vedavedāṅgapāragāḥ ॥2-30-36॥
[एतेषाम् (eteṣām) - of these; शिष्यवर्गाः (śiṣyavargāḥ) - groups of disciples; च (ca) - and; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; च (ca) - and; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; होत्रगाः (hotragāḥ) - performers of sacrificial rites; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वेदवेदाङ्गपारगाः (vedavedāṅgapāragāḥ) - those who have mastered the Vedas and Vedāṅgas;]
(Of these, groups of disciples and sons, O best of the Bharatas, all became performers of sacrificial rites, those who have mastered the Vedas and Vedāṅgas.)

ते वाचयित्वा पुण्याहमीहयित्वा च तं विधिम्। शास्त्रोक्तं योजयामासुस्तद्देवयजनं महत् ॥२-३०-३७॥

(That he ordered, the king, best among kings, Sahadeva then immediately, the minister, best among Kurus.)
Then that king, the best among kings, immediately ordered his minister Sahadeva, the best among the Kurus. (2-30-39)
आमन्त्रणार्थं दूतांस्त्वं प्रेषयस्वाशुगान्द्रुतम्। उपश्रुत्य वचो राज्ञः स दूतान्प्राहिणोत्तदा ॥२-३०-४०॥
āmantraṇārthaṃ dūtāṃstvaṃ preṣayasvāśugāndrutam। upaśrutya vaco rājñaḥ sa dūtānprāhiṇottadā ॥2-30-40॥

(For the purpose of invitation, you send swift messengers quickly. Having heard the words of the king, he then sent messengers.)
"Send swift messengers quickly for the invitation." Having heard the king's words, he then sent the messengers. (2-30-40)
आमन्त्रयध्वं राष्ट्रेषु ब्राह्मणान्भूमिपानपि। विशश्च मान्याञ्शूद्रांश्च सर्वानानयतेति च ॥२-३०-४१॥
āmantrayadhvaṃ rāṣṭreṣu brāhmaṇānbhūmipānapi। viśaśca mānyāñśūdrāṃśca sarvānānayeteti ca ॥2-30-41॥
[आमन्त्रयध्वम् (āmantrayadhvam) - you all invite; राष्ट्रेषु (rāṣṭreṣu) - in the kingdoms; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brāhmaṇas; भूमिपान् (bhūmipān) - kings; अपि (api) - also; विशः (viśaḥ) - clansmen; च (ca) - and; मान्यान् (mānyān) - respected ones; शूद्रान् (śūdrān) - Śūdras; च (ca) - and; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; आनयेत् (ānayet) - should bring; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and;]
(You all invite Brāhmaṇas, kings also, clansmen and respected ones, Śūdras and all (others) in the kingdoms, (saying) thus: "Bring all.")
Invite Brāhmaṇas, kings, clansmen, respected ones, Śūdras, and everyone else from the kingdoms, instructing: "Bring everyone." (2-30-41)
ते सर्वान्पृथिवीपालान्पाण्डवेयस्य शासनात्। आमन्त्रयां बभूवुश्च प्रेषयामास चापरान् ॥२-३०-४२॥
te sarvān pṛthivī-pālān pāṇḍaveyasya śāsanāt। āmantrayāṃ babhūvuś ca preṣayām āsa ca aparān ॥2-30-42॥
[ते (te) - they; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; पृथिवीपालान् (pṛthivīpālān) - earth-guardians; (kings;) पाण्डवेयस्य (pāṇḍaveyasya) - of the son of Pāṇḍu; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - from the command; आमन्त्रयाम् (āmantrayām) - to invite; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; च (ca) - and; प्रेषयामास (preṣayām āsa) - sent; च (ca) - and; अपरान् (aparān) - others;]
(They all the earth-guardians from the command of the son of Pāṇḍu to invite became and sent and others.)
At the command of the son of Pāṇḍu, they invited all the kings of the earth and also sent invitations to others. (2-30-42)
ततस्ते तु यथाकालं कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम्। दीक्षयां चक्रिरे विप्रा राजसूयाय भारत ॥२-३०-४३॥
tataste tu yathākālaṃ kuntīputraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। dīkṣayāṃ cakrire viprā rājasūyāya bhārata ॥2-30-43॥

(Then they, at the proper time, performed the consecration of Kuntī's son Yudhiṣṭhira for the Rājasūya, O Bhārata.)
Then, O Bhārata, at the proper time the Brāhmaṇas performed the consecration of Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, for the Rājasūya sacrifice. (2-30-43)
दीक्षितः स तु धर्मात्मा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। जगाम यज्ञायतनं वृतो विप्रैः सहस्रशः ॥२-३०-४४॥
dīkṣitaḥ sa tu dharmātmā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। jagāma yajñāyatanaṃ vṛto vipraiḥ sahasraśaḥ ॥2-30-44॥
[दीक्षितः (dīkṣitaḥ) - one who has been consecrated; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - whose nature is dharma; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - king of dharma; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; जगाम (jagāma) - went; यज्ञायतनम् (yajñāyatanam) - sacrificial place; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - accompanied; विप्रैः (vipraiḥ) - by Brāhmaṇas; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(Consecrated, he, but, whose nature is dharma, king of dharma, Yudhishthira, went to the sacrificial place, accompanied by Brāhmaṇas by thousands.)
Yudhishthira, the righteous king, having been consecrated, went to the sacrificial place accompanied by thousands of Brāhmaṇas. (2-30-44)
भ्रातृभिर्ज्ञातिभिश्चैव सुहृद्भिः सचिवैस्तथा। क्षत्रियैश्च मनुष्येन्द्र नानादेशसमागतैः ॥ अमात्यैश्च नृपश्रेष्ठो धर्मो विग्रहवानिव ॥२-३०-४५॥
bhrātṛbhir jñātibhiś caiva suhṛdbhiḥ sacivaiz tathā। kṣatriyaiś ca manuṣyendra nānādeśasamāgataiḥ ॥ amātyaiś ca nṛpaśreṣṭho dharmo vigrahavān iva ॥2-30-45॥

(By brothers, by relatives, and indeed by friends, by ministers also, by kṣatriyas and, O king of men, by those assembled from various regions, and by counselors, the best among kings, dharma as if embodied.)
O king of men, surrounded by brothers, relatives, friends, ministers, kṣatriyas, and counselors gathered from various regions, the best among kings appeared as if dharma itself had taken form. (2-30-45)
आजग्मुर्ब्राह्मणास्तत्र विषयेभ्यस्ततस्ततः। सर्वविद्यासु निष्णाता वेदवेदाङ्गपारगाः ॥२-३०-४६॥
ājagmur brāhmaṇās tatra viṣayebhyas tatas tataḥ। sarva-vidyāsu niṣṇātā veda-vedāṅga-pāragāḥ ॥2-30-46॥
[आजग्मुः (ājagmuh) - came; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; तत्र (tatra) - there; विषयेभ्यः (viṣayebhyaḥ) - from the regions; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; सर्वविद्यासु (sarva-vidyāsu) - in all sciences; निष्णाताः (niṣṇātāḥ) - proficient; वेदवेदाङ्गपारगाः (veda-vedāṅga-pāragāḥ) - versed in Veda and Vedāṅgas;]
(Brāhmaṇas came there from the regions, from here and there, proficient in all sciences, versed in Veda and Vedāṅgas.)

तेषामावसथांश्चक्रुर्धर्मराजस्य शासनात्। बह्वन्नाञ्शयनैर्युक्तान्सगणानां पृथक्पृथक् ॥ सर्वर्तुगुणसम्पन्नाञ्शिल्पिनोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥२-३०-४७॥
teṣām āvasathāṃś cakrur dharmarājasya śāsanāt। bahv-annān śayanaiḥ yuktān sa-gaṇānāṃ pṛthak pṛthak॥ sarva-ṛtu-guṇa-sampannān śilpinaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ॥2-30-47॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; आवसथान् (āvasathān) - dwellings; च (ca) - and; अकुर्वन् (cakrur) - made; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by the order; बहु-अन्नान् (bahv-annān) - with much food; शयनैः (śayanaiḥ) - with beds; युक्तान् (yuktān) - equipped; स-गणानाम् (sa-gaṇānām) - with groups; पृथक् पृथक् (pṛthak pṛthak) - separately; सर्व-ऋतु-गुण-सम्पन्नान् (sarva-ṛtu-guṇa-sampannān) - endowed with qualities for all seasons; शिल्पिनः (śilpinaḥ) - artisans; अथ (atha) - then; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(Of them, dwellings were made by the order of Dharmarāja, equipped with much food and beds, for the groups, separately; endowed with qualities for all seasons, the artisans then (made them) by thousands.)
By the order of Dharmarāja, dwellings were constructed for them, each group separately, equipped with abundant food and beds; artisans by the thousands made them, ensuring they were suitable for all seasons. (2-30-47)
तेषु ते न्यवसन्राजन्ब्राह्मणा भृशसत्कृताः। कथयन्तः कथा बह्वीः पश्यन्तो नटनर्तकान् ॥२-३०-४८॥
teṣu te nyavasan rājan brāhmaṇā bhṛśa-satkṛtāḥ। kathayantaḥ kathā bahvīḥ paśyanto naṭa-nartakān ॥2-30-48॥
[तेषु (teṣu) - among them; ते (te) - they; न्यवसन् (nyavasan) - dwelt; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - the brāhmaṇas; भृशसत्कृताः (bhṛśa-satkṛtāḥ) - greatly honored; कथयन्तः (kathayantaḥ) - conversing; कथा (kathā) - stories; बह्वीः (bahvīḥ) - many; पश्यन्तः (paśyantaḥ) - watching; नटनर्तकान् (naṭa-nartakān) - actors and dancers;]
(Among them, they dwelt, O king, the brāhmaṇas, greatly honored, conversing many stories, watching actors and dancers.)

भुञ्जतां चैव विप्राणां वदतां च महास्वनः। अनिशं श्रूयते स्मात्र मुदितानां महात्मनाम् ॥२-३०-४९॥
bhuñjatāṃ caiva viprāṇāṃ vadatāṃ ca mahāsvanaḥ। aniśaṃ śrūyate smātra muditānāṃ mahātmanām ॥2-30-49॥
[भुञ्जतां (bhuñjatām) - of those eating; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विप्राणां (viprāṇām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; वदतां (vadatām) - of those speaking; च (ca) - and; महास्वनः (mahāsvanaḥ) - great sound; अनिशं (aniśam) - constantly; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; स्म (sma) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; मुदितानां (muditānām) - of the joyful ones; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled ones;]
(Of those eating and indeed of the Brāhmaṇas, of those speaking and of the great sound, constantly is heard indeed here of the joyful ones, of the great-souled ones.)
The great sound of the Brāhmaṇas eating and speaking was constantly heard here, from the joyful and great-souled ones. (2-30-49)
दीयतां दीयतामेषां भुज्यतां भुज्यतामिति। एवम्प्रकाराः सञ्जल्पाः श्रूयन्ते स्मात्र नित्यशः ॥२-३०-५०॥
dīyatāṃ dīyatāmeṣāṃ bhujyatāṃ bhujyatāmiti। evamprakārāḥ sañjalpāḥ śrūyante smātra nityaśaḥ ॥2-30-50॥

(Let it be given, let it be given to these, let it be enjoyed, let it be enjoyed—thus; thus kinds of conversations are heard indeed here constantly.)
“Give, give to these, let them enjoy, let them enjoy”—such kinds of conversations were constantly heard here. (2-30-50)
गवां शतसहस्राणि शयनानां च भारत। रुक्मस्य योषितां चैव धर्मराजः पृथग्ददौ ॥२-३०-५१॥
gavāṃ śatasahasrāṇi śayanānāṃ ca bhārata। rukmasya yoṣitāṃ caiva dharmarājaḥ pṛthagdadau ॥2-30-51॥
[गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; शतसहस्राणि (śatasahasrāṇi) - hundred thousands; शयनानां (śayanānāṃ) - of beds; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; रुक्मस्य (rukmasya) - of gold; योषितां (yoṣitāṃ) - of women; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; ददौ (dadau) - gave;]
(Dharmarāja gave, O Bhārata, hundred thousands of cows, beds, gold, and women separately indeed.)
O Bhārata, Dharmarāja gave away a hundred thousand cows, beds, gold, and women separately. (2-30-51)
प्रावर्ततैवं यज्ञः स पाण्डवस्य महात्मनः। पृथिव्यामेकवीरस्य शक्रस्येव त्रिविष्टपे ॥२-३०-५२॥
prāvartataivaṃ yajñaḥ sa pāṇḍavasya mahātmanaḥ। pṛthivyāmekavīrasya śakrasyeva triviṣṭape ॥2-30-52॥
[प्रावर्तत (prāvartata) - was commenced; began; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this manner; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; ritual; स (sa) - that; he; पाण्डवस्य (pāṇḍavasya) - of the Pāṇḍava; (referring to Yudhiṣṭhira); महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; noble; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on the earth; एकवीरस्य (ekavīrasya) - of the sole hero; of the one valiant; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra; of Indra; इव (iva) - like; as if; त्रिविष्टपे (triviṣṭape) - in heaven; in the third heaven;]
(Thus that sacrifice of the great-souled Pāṇḍava was commenced; on the earth, like that of the sole hero Śakra in heaven.)
Thus, the sacrifice of the noble Pāṇḍava began, on earth, like that of the mighty Indra, the sole hero, in heaven. (2-30-52)
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा प्रेषयामास पाण्डवम्। नकुलं हास्तिनपुरं भीष्माय भरतर्षभ ॥२-३०-५३॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā preṣayāmāsa pāṇḍavam। nakulaṃ hāstinapuraṃ bhīṣmāya bharatarṣabha ॥2-30-53॥

(Then King Yudhishthira sent the Pandava Nakula to Hastinapura to Bhishma, O bull among the Bharatas.)
Then King Yudhishthira sent Nakula, the Pandava, to Hastinapura to meet Bhishma, O best of the Bharatas. (2-30-53)
द्रोणाय धृतराष्ट्राय विदुराय कृपाय च। भ्रातॄणां चैव सर्वेषां येऽनुरक्ता युधिष्ठिरे ॥२-३०-५४॥
droṇāya dhṛtarāṣṭrāya vidurāya kṛpāya ca। bhrātṝṇāṃ caiva sarveṣāṃ ye'nuraktā yudhiṣṭhire ॥2-30-54॥

(To Droṇa, to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, to Vidura, to Kṛpa and to all the brothers indeed, and to all who are attached to Yudhiṣṭhira.)
