वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततोऽभिषेचनीयेऽह्नि ब्राह्मणा राजभिः सह। अन्तर्वेदीं प्रविविशुः सत्कारार्थं महर्षयः ॥२-३३-१॥
tato'bhiṣecanīye'ahni brāhmaṇā rājabhiḥ saha। antarvedīṃ praviviśuḥ satkārārthaṃ maharṣayaḥ ॥2-33-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभिषेचनीये (abhiṣecanīye) - on the day of anointing; अह्नि (ahni) - on the day; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; राजभिः (rājabhiḥ) - with kings; सह (saha) - together; अन्तर्वेदीम् (antarvedīm) - the inner sacrificial ground; प्रविविशुः (praviviśuḥ) - entered; सत्कारार्थम् (satkārārtham) - for the purpose of honoring; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages;]
(Then, on the day of anointing, the Brāhmaṇas together with the kings entered the inner sacrificial ground for the purpose of honoring, the great sages.)
Then, on the day appointed for the anointing, the Brāhmaṇas, together with the kings, entered the inner sacrificial ground to honor the great sages. (2-33-1)
नारदप्रमुखास्तस्यामन्तर्वेद्यां महात्मनः। समासीनाः शुशुभिरे सह राजर्षिभिस्तदा ॥२-३३-२॥
nārada-pramukhās tasyām antarvedyāṃ mahātmanaḥ। samāsīnāḥ śuśubhire saha rājarṣibhis tadā ॥2-33-2॥
[नारदप्रमुखाः (nārada-pramukhāḥ) - headed by Nārada; तस्याम् (tasyām) - in that; अन्तर्वेद्यां (antarvedyām) - on the inner platform; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; समासीनाः (samāsīnāḥ) - seated together; शुशुभिरे (śuśubhire) - shone; सह (saha) - with; राजर्षिभिः (rājarṣibhiḥ) - with the royal sages; तदा (tadā) - at that time;]
(Headed by Nārada, in that (place), on the inner platform of the great-souled one, seated together, shone with the royal sages at that time.)
At that time, Nārada and the others, together with the royal sages, were seated on the inner platform of the great-souled one, shining brilliantly. (2-33-2)
समेता ब्रह्मभवने देवा देवर्षयो यथा। कर्मान्तरमुपासन्तो जजल्पुरमितौजसः ॥२-३३-३॥
sametā brahmabhavane devā devarṣayo yathā। karmāntaramupāsanto jajalpuramitaaujasaḥ ॥2-33-3॥
[समेता (sametā) - having assembled; ब्रह्मभवने (brahmabhavane) - in the abode of Brahmā; देवा (devāḥ) - the gods; देवर्षयः (devarṣayaḥ) - the divine sages; यथा (yathā) - as; कर्मान्तरम् (karmāntaram) - another act; उपासन्तः (upāsantaḥ) - worshipping; जजल्पुः (jajalpuḥ) - they conversed; अमितौजसः (amitaaujasaḥ) - of immeasurable energy;]
(Having assembled in the abode of Brahmā, the gods and divine sages, as they were worshipping another act, conversed, possessing immeasurable energy.)
The gods and divine sages, endowed with immeasurable energy, assembled in the abode of Brahmā and, while engaged in another ritual, began to converse. (2-33-3)
इदमेवं न चाप्येवमेवमेतन्न चान्यथा। इत्यूचुर्बहवस्तत्र वितण्डानाः परस्परम् ॥२-३३-४॥
idamevaṃ na cāpy evam evam etan na cānyathā। ity ūcur bahavas tatra vitaṇḍānāḥ parasparam ॥2-33-4॥
[इदम् (idam) - this; एवम् (evam) - thus; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; एवम् (evam) - thus; एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; इति (iti) - thus; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; तत्र (tatra) - there; वितण्डानाः (vitaṇḍānāḥ) - of disputants; परस्परम् (parasparam) - to each other;]
(This thus, not and also thus, thus this not and otherwise. Thus said many there of disputants to each other.)
Many disputants there said to each other: "This is so, not so, also so, thus, this is not so, and not otherwise." (2-33-4)
कृशानर्थांस्तथा केचिदकृशांस्तत्र कुर्वते। अकृशांश्च कृशांश्चक्रुर्हेतुभिः शास्त्रनिश्चितैः ॥२-३३-५॥
kṛśānarthāṃs tathā kecid akṛśāṃs tatra kurvate। akṛśāṃś ca kṛśāṃś cakrur hetubhiḥ śāstra-niścitaiḥ ॥2-33-5॥
[कृशानर्थान् (kṛśānarthān) - lean ones as objects; तथा (tathā) - likewise; केचित् (kecit) - some; अकृशान् (akṛśān) - not-lean ones; तत्र (tatra) - there; कुर्वते (kurvate) - do; अकृशान् (akṛśān) - not-lean ones; च (ca) - and; कृशान् (kṛśān) - lean ones; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - did; हेतुभिः (hetubhiḥ) - by causes; शास्त्रनिश्चितैः (śāstra-niścitaiḥ) - determined by śāstra;]
(Lean ones as objects likewise some not-lean ones there do; not-lean ones and lean ones did by causes determined by śāstra.)
Some make lean ones as the object, likewise some make not-lean ones there; both lean and not-lean ones are made so by causes determined by śāstra. (2-33-5)
तत्र मेधाविनः केचिदर्थमन्यैः प्रपूरितम्। विचिक्षिपुर्यथा श्येना नभोगतमिवामिषम् ॥२-३३-६॥
tatra medhāvinaḥ kecid artham anyaiḥ prapūritam। vicikṣipur yathā śyenā nabhogatam ivāmiṣam ॥2-33-6॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; मेधाविनः (medhāvinaḥ) - wise ones; केचित् (kecit) - some; अर्थम् (artham) - meaning; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; प्रपूरितम् (prapūritam) - filled up; विचिक्षिपुः (vicikṣipuḥ) - disputed; यथा (yathā) - just as; श्येनाः (śyenāḥ) - hawks; नभोगतम् (nabhogatam) - gone to the sky; इव (iva) - like; आमिषम् (āmiṣam) - meat;]
(There, some wise ones disputed the meaning filled up by others, just as hawks (dispute) meat that has gone to the sky.)
There, some wise men disputed the meaning that had been filled in by others, just as hawks dispute over meat that has flown up into the sky. (2-33-6)
केचिद्धर्मार्थसंयुक्ताः कथास्तत्र महाव्रताः। रेमिरे कथयन्तश्च सर्ववेदविदां वराः ॥२-३३-७॥
keciddharmārthasaṃyuktāḥ kathāstatra mahāvratāḥ। remire kathayantaśca sarvavedavidāṃ varāḥ ॥2-33-7॥
[केचित् (kecit) - some; धर्मार्थ (dharmārtha) - connected with dharma and artha; संयुक्ताः (saṃyuktāḥ) - joined; कथाः (kathāḥ) - stories; तत्र (tatra) - there; महाव्रताः (mahāvratāḥ) - great vow-holders; रेमिरे (remire) - delighted; कथयन्तः (kathayantaḥ) - narrating; च (ca) - and; सर्ववेदविदां (sarvavedavidām) - of all knowers of the Vedas; वराः (varāḥ) - the best;]
(Some great vow-holders there delighted in stories joined with dharma and artha, and the best among all knowers of the Vedas narrated (them).)
There, some of the great vow-holders delighted in stories connected with dharma and artha, and the best among all the knowers of the Vedas narrated them. (2-33-7)
सा वेदिर्वेदसम्पन्नैर्देवद्विजमहर्षिभिः। आबभासे समाकीर्णा नक्षत्रैर्द्यौरिवामला ॥२-३३-८॥
sā vedir vedasampannair devadvijamaharṣibhiḥ। ābabhāse samākīrṇā nakṣatrair dyaur ivāmalā ॥2-33-8॥
[सा (sā) - she; (that) altar; वेदिः (vediḥ) - altar; वेदसम्पन्नैः (vedasampannaiḥ) - endowed with Vedas; देव (deva) - gods; द्विज (dvija) - twice-born (Brahmins); महर्षिभिः (maharṣibhiḥ) - great sages; आबभासे (ābabhāse) - shone; समाकीर्णा (samākīrṇā) - filled; नक्षत्रैः (nakṣatraiḥ) - with stars; द्यौः (dyaus) - sky; इव (iva) - like; अमला (amalā) - spotless;]
(That altar, endowed with Vedas, by gods, twice-born and great sages, shone, filled with stars, like the spotless sky.)
That altar, filled with gods, Brahmins, and great sages endowed with Vedic knowledge, shone like the spotless sky filled with stars. (2-33-8)
न तस्यां संनिधौ शूद्रः कश्चिदासीन्न चाव्रतः। अन्तर्वेद्यां तदा राजन्युधिष्ठिरनिवेशने ॥२-३३-९॥
na tasyāṃ saṃnidhau śūdraḥ kaścid āsīn na cāvrataḥ। antarvedyāṃ tadā rājan yudhiṣṭhira-niveśane ॥2-33-9॥
[न (na) - not; तस्यां (tasyām) - in that (place); संनिधौ (saṃnidhau) - in the presence; शूद्रः (śūdraḥ) - Śūdra (a member of the fourth varṇa); कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अव्रतः (avrataḥ) - one without vows (discipline); अन्तर्वेद्यां (antarvedyām) - within the sacred enclosure; तदा (tadā) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; निवेशने (niveśane) - in the residence;]
(Not in that presence was any Śūdra, nor anyone without vows; within the sacred enclosure then, O king, in the residence of Yudhiṣṭhira.)
O king, at that time, in the residence of Yudhiṣṭhira, within the sacred enclosure, there was not a single Śūdra or anyone lacking in discipline. (2-33-9)
तां तु लक्ष्मीवतो लक्ष्मीं तदा यज्ञविधानजाम्। तुतोष नारदः पश्यन्धर्मराजस्य धीमतः ॥२-३३-१०॥
tāṃ tu lakṣmīvato lakṣmīṃ tadā yajñavidhānajām। tutoṣa nāradaḥ paśyan dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ ॥2-33-10॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her; तु (tu) - but; लक्ष्मीवतः (lakṣmīvataḥ) - of the prosperous one; लक्ष्मीं (lakṣmīm) - Lakṣmī; तदा (tadā) - then; यज्ञविधानजाम् (yajñavidhānajām) - born of the arrangement of sacrifice; तुतोष (tutoṣa) - was pleased; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise;]
(Her but of the prosperous one Lakṣmī then born of the arrangement of sacrifice was pleased Nārada seeing of Dharmarāja of the wise.)
But Nārada, seeing Lakṣmī, the Lakṣmī of the prosperous one, then born of the arrangement of sacrifice, was pleased with the wise Dharmarāja. (2-33-10)
अथ चिन्तां समापेदे स मुनिर्मनुजाधिप। नारदस्तं तदा पश्यन्सर्वक्षत्रसमागमम् ॥२-३३-११॥
atha cintāṃ samāpede sa munir manujādhipa। nāradas taṃ tadā paśyan sarvakṣatrasamāgamam ॥2-33-11॥
[अथ (atha) - then; चिन्ताम् (cintām) - thought; समापेदे (samāpede) - entered into; सः (saḥ) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; मनुजाधिप (manujādhipa) - king of men; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; तम् (tam) - him; तदा (tadā) - then; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; सर्वक्षत्रसमागमम् (sarvakṣatrasamāgamam) - assembly of all kṣatriyas;]
(Then he, the sage, the king of men, entered into thought. Nārada, seeing him then, (and) the assembly of all kṣatriyas. (2-33-11))
Then the sage, the king of men, became absorbed in thought. At that time, Nārada, seeing him and the gathering of all the kṣatriyas, (spoke). (2-33-11)
सस्मार च पुरावृत्तां कथां तां भरतर्षभ। अंशावतरणे यासौ ब्रह्मणो भवनेऽभवत् ॥२-३३-१२॥
sasmāra ca purāvṛttāṃ kathāṃ tāṃ bharatarṣabha। aṃśāvataraṇe yāsau brahmaṇo bhavane'bhavat ॥2-33-12॥
[सस्मार (sasmāra) - remembered; च (ca) - and; पुरा (purā) - formerly; वृत्ताम् (vṛttām) - occurred; कथाम् (kathām) - story; ताम् (tām) - that; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; अंशावतरणे (aṃśāvataraṇe) - at the descent of a portion; या (yā) - which; असौ (asau) - that; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahmā; भवने (bhavane) - in the abode; अभवत् (abhavat) - happened;]
(And remembered, formerly occurred story, that, O best of the Bharatas, at the descent of a portion, which, that, of Brahmā, in the abode, happened.)
O best of the Bharatas, he remembered that ancient story which had happened in the abode of Brahmā at the time of the partial descent. (2-33-12)
देवानां सङ्गमं तं तु विज्ञाय कुरुनन्दन। नारदः पुण्डरीकाक्षं सस्मार मनसा हरिम् ॥२-३३-१३॥
devānāṃ saṅgamaṃ taṃ tu vijñāya kurunandana। nāradaḥ puṇḍarīkākṣaṃ sasmāra manasā harim ॥2-33-13॥
[देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; सङ्गमम् (saṅgamam) - assembly; association; तम् (tam) - that; तु (tu) - but; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having understood; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; पुण्डरीकाक्षम् (puṇḍarīkākṣam) - the lotus-eyed one; सस्मार (sasmāra) - remembered; मनसा (manasā) - with (his) mind; हरिम् (harim) - Hari;]
(Of the gods assembly that but having understood, O delight of the Kurus, Nārada the lotus-eyed one remembered with (his) mind Hari.)
O Kurunandana, having understood that assembly of the gods, Nārada remembered Hari, the lotus-eyed one, with his mind. (2-33-13)
साक्षात्स विबुधारिघ्नः क्षत्रे नारायणो विभुः। प्रतिज्ञां पालयन्धीमाञ्जातः परपुरञ्जयः ॥२-३३-१४॥
sākṣāts vibudhāri-ghnaḥ kṣatre nārāyaṇo vibhuḥ। pratijñāṃ pālayan dhīmān jātaḥ parapurañjayaḥ ॥2-33-14॥
[साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; स (sa) - he; विबुधारिघ्नः (vibudhāri-ghnaḥ) - destroyer of the enemies of the gods; क्षत्रे (kṣatre) - in the warrior class; नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; विभुः (vibhuḥ) - the all-pervading; प्रतिज्ञाम् (pratijñām) - vow; पालयन् (pālayan) - protecting; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; परपुरञ्जयः (parapurañjayaḥ) - conqueror of enemy cities;]
(Directly he, the destroyer of the enemies of the gods, Nārāyaṇa, the all-pervading, being born in the warrior class, protecting the vow, wise, conqueror of enemy cities.)
He, who is directly Nārāyaṇa, the all-pervading destroyer of the enemies of the gods, was born in the warrior class as a wise one, upholding his vow and conquering enemy cities. (2-33-14)
संदिदेश पुरा योऽसौ विबुधान्भूतकृत्स्वयम्। अन्योन्यमभिनिघ्नन्तः पुनर्लोकानवाप्स्यथ ॥२-३३-१५॥
saṃdideśa purā yo'sau vibudhān bhūtakṛt svayam। anyonyam abhinighnantaḥ punar lokān avāpsyatha ॥2-33-15॥
[संदिदेश (saṃdideśa) - instructed; पुरा (purā) - formerly; यः (yaḥ) - who; असौ (asau) - that; विबुधान् (vibudhān) - the wise ones; भूतकृत् (bhūtakṛt) - creator of beings; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyam) - each other; अभिनिघ्नन्तः (abhinighnantaḥ) - striking; पुनः (punar) - again; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अवाप्स्यथ (avāpsyatha) - you will attain;]
(He who formerly instructed, that creator of beings himself, the wise ones, striking each other, again you will attain the worlds.)
He who once instructed, that very creator of beings himself, the wise ones, as you strike each other, you will again attain the worlds. (2-33-15)
इति नारायणः शम्भुर्भगवाञ्जगतः प्रभुः। आदिश्य विबुधान्सर्वानजायत यदुक्षये ॥२-३३-१६॥
iti nārāyaṇaḥ śambhur bhagavāñ jagataḥ prabhuḥ। ādiśya vibudhān sarvān ajāyata yadu-kṣaye ॥2-33-16॥
[इति (iti) - thus; नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; शम्भुः (śambhuḥ) - Śambhu; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the master; आदिश्य (ādiśya) - having instructed; विबुधान् (vibudhān) - the gods; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अजायत (ajāyata) - was born; यदुक्षये (yadu-kṣaye) - at the destruction of the Yadus;]
(Thus Nārāyaṇa, Śambhu, the Lord, the master of the world, having instructed all the gods, was born at the destruction of the Yadus.)
Thus, Nārāyaṇa, Śambhu, the Lord and master of the world, after instructing all the gods, was born at the time of the destruction of the Yadus. (2-33-16)
क्षितावन्धकवृष्णीनां वंशे वंशभृतां वरः। परया शुशुभे लक्ष्म्या नक्षत्राणामिवोडुराट् ॥२-३३-१७॥
kṣitāv-andhaka-vṛṣṇīnām vaṃśe vaṃśabhṛtāṃ varaḥ। parayā śuśubhe lakṣmyā nakṣatrāṇām iva oḍurāṭ॥2-33-17॥
[क्षितौ (kṣitau) - on the earth; अन्धकवृष्णीनाम् (andhaka-vṛṣṇīnām) - of the Andhaka and Vṛṣṇi (clans); वंशे (vaṃśe) - in the lineage; वंशभृताम् (vaṃśabhṛtām) - of the sustainers of the lineage; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; परया (parayā) - with supreme; शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - shone; लक्ष्म्या (lakṣmyā) - splendor; नक्षत्राणाम् (nakṣatrāṇām) - of the stars; इव (iva) - like; ओडुराट् (oḍurāṭ) - the moon;]
(On the earth, in the lineage of the Andhaka and Vṛṣṇi, the best among the sustainers of the lineage, shone with supreme splendor, like the moon among the stars.)
On earth, in the line of the Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis, the best among the upholders of the lineage shone with supreme splendor, just as the moon shines among the stars. (2-33-17)
यस्य बाहुबलं सेन्द्राः सुराः सर्व उपासते। सोऽयं मानुषवन्नाम हरिरास्तेऽरिमर्दनः ॥२-३३-१८॥
yasya bāhubalaṃ sendrāḥ surāḥ sarva upāsate। so'yaṃ mānuṣavannāma harirāste'rimardanaḥ ॥2-33-18॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; बाहुबलं (bāhubalam) - arm strength; सेन्द्राः (sendrāḥ) - with Indra; सुराः (surāḥ) - the gods; सर्व (sarva) - all; उपासते (upāsate) - worship; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; मानुषवत् (mānuṣavat) - like a human; नाम (nāma) - by name; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; आस्ते (āste) - dwells; अरिमर्दनः (arimardanaḥ) - destroyer of enemies;]
(Of whom all the gods with Indra worship the arm strength; he, this Hari by name, dwells like a human, the destroyer of enemies.)
He whose arm strength is worshipped by all the gods along with Indra—this Hari, called by that name, dwells here like a human, the destroyer of enemies. (2-33-18)
अहो बत महद्भूतं स्वयम्भूर्यदिदं स्वयम्। आदास्यति पुनः क्षत्रमेवं बलसमन्वितम् ॥२-३३-१९॥
aho bata mahadbhūtaṃ svayambhūryadidaṃ svayam। ādāsyati punaḥ kṣatramevaṃ balasamanvitam ॥2-33-19॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; बत (bata) - truly; महद्भूतम् (mahadbhūtam) - great wonder; स्वयम्भूः (svayambhūḥ) - the self-born (Brahmā); यत् (yat) - that; इदं (idaṃ) - this; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; आदास्यति (ādāsyati) - will restore; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; क्षत्रम् (kṣatram) - the kṣatriya race; एवम् (evam) - thus; बलसमन्वितम् (balasamanvitam) - endowed with strength;]
(Indeed, truly, a great wonder! The self-born (Brahmā), that this himself, will restore again the kṣatriya race thus endowed with strength.)
Indeed, what a great wonder! The self-born Brahmā himself will once again restore the kṣatriya race, endowed with strength. (2-33-19)
इत्येतां नारदश्चिन्तां चिन्तयामास धर्मवित्। हरिं नारायणं ज्ञात्वा यज्ञैरीड्यं तमीश्वरम् ॥२-३३-२०॥
ityetāṃ nāradaścintāṃ cintayāmāsa dharmavit। hariṃ nārāyaṇaṃ jñātvā yajñairīḍyaṃ tamīśvaram ॥2-33-20॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एताम् (etām) - this; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; चिन्ताम् (cintām) - thought; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - pondered; धर्मवित् (dharmavit) - knower of dharma; हरिम् (harim) - Hari; नारायणम् (nārāyaṇam) - Nārāyaṇa; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; ईड्यम् (īḍyam) - worthy of praise; तम् (tam) - him; ईश्वरम् (īśvaram) - the Lord;]
(Thus, this thought Nārada pondered, the knower of dharma. Having known Hari, Nārāyaṇa, him who is worthy of praise by sacrifices, the Lord.)
Thus, Nārada, the knower of dharma, pondered this thought. Realizing Hari, Nārāyaṇa, the Lord who is worthy of praise through sacrifices. (2-33-20)
तस्मिन्धर्मविदां श्रेष्ठो धर्मराजस्य धीमतः। महाध्वरे महाबुद्धिस्तस्थौ स बहुमानतः ॥२-३३-२१॥
tasmin dharmavidāṃ śreṣṭho dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ। mahādhvare mahābuddhis tasthau sa bahumānataḥ ॥2-33-21॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; धर्मविदां (dharmavidām) - of the knowers of dharma; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise; महाध्वरे (mahādhvare) - at the great sacrifice; महाबुद्धिः (mahābuddhiḥ) - one of great intellect; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; सः (saḥ) - he; बहुमानतः (bahumānataḥ) - with great respect;]
(In that (assembly), the best among the knowers of dharma, of the wise Dharmarāja, at the great sacrifice, one of great intellect, he stood with great respect.)
There, the foremost among the knowers of dharma, the wise Dharmarāja, stood at the great sacrifice with great respect. (2-33-21)
ततो भीष्मोऽब्रवीद्राजन्धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम्। क्रियतामर्हणं राज्ञां यथार्हमिति भारत ॥२-३३-२२॥
tato bhīṣmo'bravīdrājan dharmarājaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। kriyatāmarhaṇaṃ rājñāṃ yathārhamiti bhārata ॥2-33-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; राजन् (rājan) - O king; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmarāja; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; अर्हणम् (arhaṇam) - honoring; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of the kings; यथार्हम् (yathārham) - as is fitting; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then Bhīṣma said, O king, to Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira: Let the honoring of the kings be done as is fitting, thus, O Bhārata.)
Then Bhīṣma said to King Yudhiṣṭhira, the Dharmarāja: "Let the honoring of the kings be performed as is appropriate," O Bhārata. (2-33-22)
आचार्यमृत्विजं चैव संयुक्तं च युधिष्ठिर। स्नातकं च प्रियं चाहुः षडर्घ्यार्हान्नृपं तथा ॥२-३३-२३॥
ācāryam ṛtvijaṃ caiva saṃyuktaṃ ca yudhiṣṭhira। snātakaṃ ca priyaṃ cāhuḥ ṣaḍarghyārhān nṛpaṃ tathā॥2-33-23॥
[आचार्यम् (ācāryam) - teacher; ऋत्विजम् (ṛtvijam) - priest; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; संयुक्तम् (saṃyuktam) - associated; च (ca) - and; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira; स्नातकम् (snātakam) - one who has completed studies; च (ca) - and; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear; च (ca) - and; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; षट् (ṣaṭ) - six; अर्घ्य-अर्हान् (arghya-arhān) - worthy of arghya; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Teacher, priest, and indeed associated, and Yudhishthira, one who has completed studies, and dear, and they say, six worthy of arghya, king also.)
They say that the teacher, the priest, one who has completed studies, a dear one, the king, and one who is associated (with these), O Yudhishthira, are the six persons worthy of receiving arghya. (2-33-23)
एतानर्हानभिगतानाहुः संवत्सरोषितान्। त इमे कालपूगस्य महतोऽस्मानुपागताः ॥२-३३-२४॥
etānarhānabhigatānāhuḥ saṃvatsaroṣitān। ta ime kālapūgasya mahato'smānupāgatāḥ ॥2-33-24॥
[एतान् (etān) - these (persons); अर्हान् (arhān) - worthy ones; अभिगतान् (abhigatān) - who have arrived; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they said; संवत्सर (saṃvatsara) - year; उषितान् (uṣitān) - who have dwelt; त (ta) - they; इमे (ime) - these; काल (kāla) - time; पूगस्य (pūgasya) - of the group; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; अस्मान् (asmān) - to us; उपागताः (upāgatāḥ) - have come;]
(These worthy ones who have arrived, they said, have dwelt for a year. These, of the great group of time, have come to us.)
They said, "These worthy ones who have arrived have dwelt for a year. These, from the great group of time, have now come to us." (2-33-24)
एषामेकैकशो राजन्नर्घ्यमानीयतामिति। अथ चैषां वरिष्ठाय समर्थायोपनीयताम् ॥२-३३-२५॥
eṣāmekāikaśo rājannarghyamānīyatāmiti. atha caiṣāṃ variṣṭhāya samarthāyopanīyatām ॥2-33-25॥
[एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; एकैकशः (ekaikaśaḥ) - one by one; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अर्घ्यम् (arghyam) - offering of water; आनीयताम् (ānīyatām) - let it be brought; इति (iti) - thus; अथ (atha) - then; च (ca) - and; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; वरिष्ठाय (variṣṭhāya) - to the most eminent; समर्थाय (samarthāya) - to the capable; उपनीयताम् (upanīyatām) - let it be presented;]
(Of these, one by one, O king, let the arghya be brought, thus. Then, to the most eminent and capable among these, let it be presented.)
O king, let the arghya offering be brought for each of these, one by one. Then, let it be presented to the most eminent and capable among them. (2-33-25)

kasmai bhavān manyate'rgham ekasmai kurunandana। upanīyamānaṃ yuktaṃ ca tan me brūhi pitāmaha ॥2-33-26॥

(To whom do you think the offering should be given, O joy of the Kurus? The offering being brought, and what is proper, that tell me, O grandsire.)

ततो भीष्मः शान्तनवो बुद्ध्या निश्चित्य भारत। वार्ष्णेयं मन्यते कृष्णमर्हणीयतमं भुवि ॥२-३३-२७॥
tato bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo buddhyā niścitya bhārata। vārṣṇeyaṃ manyate kṛṣṇamarhaṇīyatamaṃ bhuvi ॥2-33-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Shantanu; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - with intellect; निश्चित्य (niścitya) - having ascertained; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; वार्ष्णेयं (vārṣṇeyam) - descendant of Vrishni; मन्यते (manyate) - considers; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - Krishna; अर्हणीयतमम् (arhaṇīyatamam) - most worthy of worship; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth;]
(Then Bhishma, son of Shantanu, having ascertained with intellect, O Bharata, considers Krishna, the descendant of Vrishni, as the most worthy of worship on earth.)

एष ह्येषां समेतानां तेजोबलपराक्रमैः। मध्ये तपन्निवाभाति ज्योतिषामिव भास्करः ॥२-३३-२८॥
eṣa hy eṣāṃ sametānāṃ tejobalaparākramaiḥ। madhye tapann ivābhāti jyotiṣām iva bhāskaraḥ ॥2-33-28॥
[एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; समेतानाम् (sametānām) - assembled; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; बल (bala) - strength; पराक्रमैः (parākramaiḥ) - by valor; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; तपन् (tapan) - shining; इव (iva) - like; आभाति (ābhāti) - appears; ज्योतिषाम् (jyotiṣām) - among the luminaries; इव (iva) - like; भास्करः (bhāskaraḥ) - the sun;]
(This indeed, of these assembled, by splendor, strength, and valor, in the midst, shining like, appears, among the luminaries, like the sun.)
He, indeed, among all these assembled warriors, by his splendor, strength, and valor, shines in the midst like the sun among the luminaries. (2-33-28)
असूर्यमिव सूर्येण निवातमिव वायुना। भासितं ह्लादितं चैव कृष्णेनेदं सदो हि नः ॥२-३३-२९॥
asūryam iva sūryeṇa nivātam iva vāyunā। bhāsitaṃ hlāditaṃ caiva kṛṣṇenedaṃ sado hi naḥ ॥2-33-29॥
[असूर्यम् (asūryam) - without sunlight; इव (iva) - like; सूर्येण (sūryeṇa) - by the sun; निवातम् (nivātam) - without wind; इव (iva) - like; वायुना (vāyunā) - by the wind; भासितम् (bhāsitam) - illuminated; ह्लादितम् (hlāditam) - gladdened; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सदः (sadaḥ) - assembly; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - for us;]
(Like a place without sunlight by the sun, like a place without wind by the wind, this assembly has been illuminated and gladdened by Kṛṣṇa indeed for us.)
Just as a place without sunlight is illuminated by the sun and a place without wind is refreshed by the wind, so too has this assembly truly been brightened and gladdened by Kṛṣṇa for us. (2-33-29)
तस्मै भीष्माभ्यनुज्ञातः सहदेवः प्रतापवान्। उपजह्रेऽथ विधिवद्वार्ष्णेयायार्घ्यमुत्तमम् ॥२-३३-३०॥
tasmai bhīṣmābhyanujñātaḥ sahadevaḥ pratāpavān। upajahre'tha vidhivad-vārṣṇeyāyārghyamuttamam ॥2-33-30॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; भीष्म-अभ्यनुज्ञातः (bhīṣma-abhyanujñātaḥ) - having been permitted by Bhīṣma; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - the mighty; उपजह्रे (upajahre) - offered; अथ (atha) - then; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to the rule; वार्ष्णेयाय (vārṣṇeyāya) - to the descendant of Vṛṣṇi (Kṛṣṇa); अर्घ्यम् (arghyam) - the offering of honor; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - the best;]
(To him, having been permitted by Bhīṣma, Sahadeva the mighty then offered, according to the rule, to the descendant of Vṛṣṇi, the best offering of honor.)
Then, with Bhīṣma's permission, the mighty Sahadeva duly offered the highest mark of respect to Kṛṣṇa, the descendant of Vṛṣṇi. (2-33-30)
प्रतिजग्राह तत्कृष्णः शास्त्रदृष्टेन कर्मणा। शिशुपालस्तु तां पूजां वासुदेवे न चक्षमे ॥२-३३-३१॥
pratijagrāha tatkṛṣṇaḥ śāstradṛṣṭena karmaṇā| śiśupālastu tāṃ pūjāṃ vāsudeve na cakṣame ॥2-33-31॥
[प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - accepted; तत् (tat) - that; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; शास्त्रदृष्टेन (śāstradṛṣṭena) - by what is prescribed by śāstra; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; शिशुपालः (śiśupālaḥ) - Śiśupāla; तु (tu) - but; तां (tāṃ) - that; पूजां (pūjāṃ) - honor; वासुदेवे (vāsudeve) - in Vāsudeva; न (na) - not; चक्षमे (cakṣame) - endured;]
(Kṛṣṇa accepted that by the action prescribed by śāstra; but Śiśupāla did not endure that honor to Vāsudeva.)
Kṛṣṇa accepted it according to the prescribed rites of the śāstra, but Śiśupāla could not tolerate that honor being given to Vāsudeva. (2-33-31)
स उपालभ्य भीष्मं च धर्मराजं च संसदि। अपाक्षिपद्वासुदेवं चेदिराजो महाबलः ॥२-३३-३२॥
sa upālabhya bhīṣmaṃ ca dharmarājaṃ ca saṃsadi| apākṣipad vāsudevaṃ cedirājo mahābalaḥ ||2-33-32||
[स (sa) - he; उपालभ्य (upālabhya) - having reproached; भीष्मं (bhīṣmam) - Bhishma; च (ca) - and; धर्मराजं (dharmarājam) - Dharmaraja; च (ca) - and; संसदि (saṃsadi) - in the assembly; अपाक्षिपत् (apākṣipat) - he censured; वासुदेवं (vāsudevam) - Vasudeva; च (ca) - and; चेदिराजः (cedirājaḥ) - the king of Chedi; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - mighty; ॥२-३३-३२॥ (||2-33-32||) - (2-33-32);]
(He, having reproached Bhishma and Dharmaraja in the assembly, censured Vasudeva also, the mighty king of Chedi.)
