नायमर्हति वार्ष्णेयस्तिष्ठत्स्विह महात्मसु। महीपतिषु कौरव्य राजवत्पार्थिवार्हणम् ॥२-३४-१॥
nāyam arhati vārṣṇeyas tiṣṭhat sv iha mahātmasu। mahīpatiṣu kauravya rājavat pārthivārhaṇam ॥2-34-1॥
[न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this (person); अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; वार्ष्णेयः (vārṣṇeyaḥ) - the descendant of Vṛṣṇi; तिष्ठत् (tiṣṭhat) - standing; स्व (sva) - own; इह (iha) - here; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - among the great-souled; महीपतिषु (mahīpatiṣu) - among kings; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; राजवत् (rājavat) - like a king; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - king; अर्हणम् (arhaṇam) - honor;]
(Not this (person) deserves, the descendant of Vṛṣṇi, standing here among the great-souled, among kings, O descendant of Kuru, kingly honor like a king.)
O Kauravya, this descendant of Vṛṣṇi, standing here among the great-souled kings, does not deserve kingly honor like a king. (2-34-1)
नायं युक्तः समाचारः पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु। यत्कामात्पुण्डरीकाक्षं पाण्डवार्चितवानसि ॥२-३४-२॥
nāyaṃ yuktaḥ samācāraḥ pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu। yatkāmātpuṇḍarīkākṣaṃ pāṇḍavārcitavānasi ॥2-34-2॥
[न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - proper; समाचारः (samācāraḥ) - conduct; पाण्डवेषु (pāṇḍaveṣu) - towards the Pāṇḍavas; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - great-souled ones; यत् (yat) - which; कामात् (kāmāt) - from desire; पुण्डरीकाक्षम् (puṇḍarīkākṣam) - the lotus-eyed one; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - the Pāṇḍavas; अर्चितवान् (arcitavān) - you have worshipped; असि (asi) - you are;]
(This conduct is not proper towards the great-souled Pāṇḍavas; because of desire, you have worshipped the lotus-eyed one, the Pāṇḍavas.)
This is not proper conduct towards the noble Pāṇḍavas; out of desire, you have worshipped the lotus-eyed Kṛṣṇa, honored by the Pāṇḍavas. (2-34-2)
बाला यूयं न जानीध्वं धर्मः सूक्ष्मो हि पाण्डवाः। अयं तत्राभ्यतिक्रान्त आपगेयोऽल्पदर्शनः ॥२-३४-३॥
bālā yūyaṃ na jānīdhvaṃ dharmaḥ sūkṣmo hi pāṇḍavāḥ। ayaṃ tatrābhyatikrānta āpageyo'lpadarśanaḥ ॥2-34-3॥
[बाला (bālā) - childlike; यूयं (yūyam) - you; न (na) - not; जानीध्वं (jānīdhvam) - know; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; सूक्ष्मः (sūkṣmaḥ) - subtle; हि (hi) - indeed; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - Pāṇḍavas; अयम् (ayam) - this; तत्र (tatra) - there; अभ्यतिक्रान्तः (abhyatikrāntaḥ) - transgressed; आपगेयः (āpageyaḥ) - of the son of the river (Bhīṣma); अल्पदर्शनः (alpadarśanaḥ) - of little understanding;]
(Childlike you do not know; dharma is subtle indeed, O Pāṇḍavas. This there has been transgressed by the son of the river, of little understanding. "2-34-3")
You are childlike and do not understand; dharma is indeed subtle, O Pāṇḍavas. Here, the son of the river (Bhīṣma), of little understanding, has transgressed it. (2-34-3)
त्वादृशो धर्मयुक्तो हि कुर्वाणः प्रियकाम्यया। भवत्यभ्यधिकं भीष्मो लोकेष्ववमतः सताम् ॥२-३४-४॥
tvādṛśo dharmayukto hi kurvāṇaḥ priyakāmyayā। bhavatyabhyadhikaṃ bhīṣmo lokeṣvavamataḥ satām ॥2-34-4॥
[त्वादृशः (tvādṛśaḥ) - like you; of your kind; धर्मयुक्तः (dharmayuktaḥ) - endowed with dharma; हि (hi) - indeed; कुर्वाणः (kurvāṇaḥ) - acting; doing; प्रियकाम्यया (priyakāmyayā) - with the desire to please; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; अभ्यधिकम् (abhyadhikam) - exceedingly; more; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - among people; in the worlds; अवमतः (avamataḥ) - disregarded; despised; सताम् (satām) - by the virtuous;]
(One like you, endowed with dharma, indeed acting with the desire to please, Bhishma becomes exceedingly disregarded among people by the virtuous.)
A person like you, who acts righteously and seeks to please others, Bhishma, becomes greatly disregarded among the virtuous in the world. (2-34-4)
कथं ह्यराजा दाशार्हो मध्ये सर्वमहीक्षिताम्। अर्हणामर्हति तथा यथा युष्माभिरर्चितः ॥२-३४-५॥
kathaṁ hyarājā dāśārho madhye sarvamahīkṣitām। arhaṇāmarhati tathā yathā yuṣmābhirarcitaḥ ॥2-34-5॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; अराजा (arājā) - not a king; दाशार्हः (dāśārhaḥ) - the Dāśārha (Krishna); मध्ये (madhye) - among; सर्वमहीक्षिताम् (sarvamahīkṣitām) - all the rulers of the earth; अर्हणाम् (arhaṇām) - of honors; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; तथा (tathā) - so; यथा (yathā) - as; युष्माभिः (yuṣmābhiḥ) - by you; अर्चितः (arcitaḥ) - has been worshipped;]
(How indeed does the Dāśārha, who is not a king, among all the rulers of the earth, deserve honors so as he has been worshipped by you?)
How is it that the Dāśārha, who is not a king, among all the rulers of the earth, deserves such honors as he has been worshipped by you? (2-34-5)
अथ वा मन्यसे कृष्णं स्थविरं भरतर्षभ। वसुदेवे स्थिते वृद्धे कथमर्हति तत्सुतः ॥२-३४-६॥
atha vā manyase kṛṣṇaṃ sthaviraṃ bharatarṣabha। vasudeve sthite vṛddhe katham arhati tat-sutaḥ ॥2-34-6॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वा (vā) - or; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; कृष्णं (kṛṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; स्थविरं (sthaviram) - old; aged; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; वसुदेवे (vasudeve) - when Vasudeva; स्थिते (sthite) - is present; is alive; वृद्धे (vṛddhe) - aged; old; कथम् (katham) - how; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; deserves; तत्सुतः (tat-sutaḥ) - his son;]
(Now or, if you think Kṛṣṇa is old, O bull among the Bharatas, when Vasudeva, being present and aged, how does his son deserve (it)?)
Or, if you think Kṛṣṇa is old, O best of the Bharatas, when Vasudeva himself is present and aged, how can his son be worthy (of this)? (2-34-6)
अथ वा वासुदेवोऽपि प्रियकामोऽनुवृत्तवान्। द्रुपदे तिष्ठति कथं माधवोऽर्हति पूजनम् ॥२-३४-७॥
atha vā vāsudevo'pi priyakāmo'nuvṛttavān। drupade tiṣṭhati kathaṃ mādhavo'rhati pūjanam ॥2-34-7॥
[अथ (atha) - now; वा (vā) - or; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; अपि (api) - also; प्रियकामः (priyakāmaḥ) - desiring the beloved; अनुवृत्तवान् (anuvṛttavān) - one who has followed; द्रुपदे (drupade) - in Drupada; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; कथम् (katham) - how; माधवः (mādhavaḥ) - Mādhava; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; पूजनम् (pūjanam) - worship;]
(Now or Vāsudeva also, desiring the beloved, who has followed, remains in Drupada; how is Mādhava worthy of worship?)
Or, is it that Vāsudeva, too, who desires his beloved and has acted accordingly, remains in Drupada? How then is Mādhava worthy of worship? (2-34-7)
आचार्यं मन्यसे कृष्णमथ वा कुरुपुङ्गव। द्रोणे तिष्ठति वार्ष्णेयं कस्मादर्चितवानसि ॥२-३४-८॥
ācāryaṃ manyase kṛṣṇam atha vā kurupuṅgava। droṇe tiṣṭhati vārṣṇeyaṃ kasmād arcitavān asi ॥2-34-8॥
[आचार्यं (ācāryam) - teacher; मन्यसे (manyase) - you consider; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; कुरुपुङ्गव (kurupuṅgava) - bull among the Kurus; द्रोणे (droṇe) - in Droṇa; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - stands; वार्ष्णेयम् (vārṣṇeyam) - the descendant of Vṛṣṇi; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; अर्चितवान् (arcitavān) - you have worshipped; असि (asi) - you are;]
(Teacher you consider Kṛṣṇa or or bull among the Kurus. In Droṇa stands the descendant of Vṛṣṇi. Why have you worshipped (him) are you? (2-34-8))
Do you consider Kṛṣṇa as the teacher, or, O bull among the Kurus? The descendant of Vṛṣṇi stands by Droṇa. Why have you worshipped him? (2-34-8)
ऋत्विजं मन्यसे कृष्णमथ वा कुरुनन्दन। द्वैपायने स्थिते विप्रे कथं कृष्णोऽर्चितस्त्वया ॥२-३४-९॥
ṛtvijaṃ manyase kṛṣṇam atha vā kurunandana। dvaipāyane sthite vipre kathaṃ kṛṣṇo'rcitas tvayā ॥2-34-9॥
[ऋत्विजम् (ṛtvijam) - priest; (one who performs sacrifices); मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; (you consider); कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; (the name of the deity); अथ (atha) - or; (then); वा (vā) - or; (alternatively); कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus; (Arjuna); द्वैपायने (dvaipāyane) - when Dvaipāyana; (Vyāsa); स्थिते (sthite) - was present; (standing); विप्रे (vipre) - the sage; (brāhmaṇa); कथम् (katham) - how; (in what way); कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; (the deity); अर्चितः (arcitaḥ) - was worshipped; (honored); त्वया (tvayā) - by you; (by thee);]
(You think of Kṛṣṇa as the priest, or, O delight of the Kurus, when Dvaipāyana the sage was present, how was Kṛṣṇa worshipped by you?)
Do you consider Kṛṣṇa to be the priest, O Kurunandana? When the sage Dvaipāyana was present, how did you worship Kṛṣṇa? (2-34-9)
नैव ऋत्विङ्न चाचार्यो न राजा मधुसूदनः। अर्चितश्च कुरुश्रेष्ठ किमन्यत्प्रियकाम्यया ॥२-३४-१०॥
naiva ṛtviṅna cācāryo na rājā madhusūdanaḥ। arcitaśca kuruśreṣṭha kimanyatpriyakāmyayā ॥2-34-10॥
[न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; ऋत्विक् (ṛtvik) - priest; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; आचार्यः (ācāryaḥ) - teacher; न (na) - not; राजा (rājā) - king; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - O Madhusūdana; अर्चितः (arcitaḥ) - has been worshipped; च (ca) - and; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśreṣṭha) - O best of Kurus; किम् (kim) - what; अन्यत् (anyat) - else; प्रियकाम्यया (priyakāmyayā) - by desire for what is dear;]
(Not indeed the priest, nor the teacher, nor the king, O Madhusūdana, has been worshipped; and, O best of Kurus, what else by desire for what is dear?)
O Madhusūdana, neither the priest, nor the teacher, nor the king has been worshipped; O best of Kurus, what else could be done out of desire for what is dear? (2-34-10)
अथ वाप्यर्चनीयोऽयं युष्माकं मधुसूदनः। किं राजभिरिहानीतैरवमानाय भारत ॥२-३४-११॥
atha vāpy arcanīyo'yaṃ yuṣmākaṃ madhusūdanaḥ। kiṃ rājabhir ihānītair avamānāya bhārata ॥2-34-11॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; also; अर्चनीयः (arcanīyaḥ) - worthy of worship; to be honored; अयम् (ayam) - this; युष्माकम् (yuṣmākam) - your; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusudana; slayer of Madhu (Krishna); किम् (kim) - what; why; राजभिः (rājabhiḥ) - by kings; इह (iha) - here; आनीतैः (ānītaiḥ) - brought; अवमानाय (avamānāya) - for insult; for disrespect; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; descendant of Bharata;]
(Now or even, this Madhusudana of yours is worthy of worship. Why have kings been brought here for insult, O Bharata?)
Now, even this Madhusudana of yours deserves to be honored. O Bharata, why have these kings been brought here only to be insulted? (2-34-11)
वयं तु न भयादस्य कौन्तेयस्य महात्मनः। प्रयच्छामः करान्सर्वे न लोभान्न च सान्त्वनात् ॥२-३४-१२॥
vayaṃ tu na bhayādasya kaunteyasya mahātmanaḥ। prayacchāmaḥ karānsarve na lobhānna ca sāntvanāt ॥2-34-12॥
[वयम् (vayam) - we; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; अस्य (asya) - of him; कौन्तेयस्य (kaunteyasya) - of the son of Kunti; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; प्रयच्छामः (prayacchāmaḥ) - we give; करान् (karān) - tribute; सर्वे (sarve) - all; न (na) - not; लोभात् (lobhāt) - from greed; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; सान्त्वनात् (sāntvanāt) - from conciliation;]
(We, but, not from fear of him, of the son of Kunti, of the great-souled, we give tribute all, not from greed, not and from conciliation.)
But we all give tribute, not out of fear of this great-souled son of Kunti, nor out of greed, nor from conciliation. (2-34-12)
अस्य धर्मप्रवृत्तस्य पार्थिवत्वं चिकीर्षतः। करानस्मै प्रयच्छामः सोऽयमस्मान्न मन्यते ॥२-३४-१३॥
asya dharmapravṛttasya pārthivatvaṃ cikīrṣataḥ। karānasmai prayacchāmaḥ so'ayamasmānna manyate ॥2-34-13॥
[अस्य (asya) - of this; धर्मप्रवृत्तस्य (dharmapravṛttasya) - of one engaged in dharma; पार्थिवत्वं (pārthivatvam) - kingship; चिकीर्षतः (cikīrṣataḥ) - desiring to do; करान् (karān) - tributes; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; प्रयच्छामः (prayacchāmaḥ) - we offer; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; न (na) - not; मन्यते (manyate) - considers;]
(Of this one engaged in dharma, desiring kingship, we offer tributes to him; he, this one, does not consider us.)
We offer tributes to this one who is engaged in dharma and desires kingship, but he does not regard us. (2-34-13)
किमन्यदवमानाद्धि यदिमं राजसंसदि। अप्राप्तलक्षणं कृष्णमर्घ्येणार्चितवानसि ॥२-३४-१४॥
kim anyad avamānād dhi yad imaṃ rājasaṃsadi। aprāptalakṣaṇaṃ kṛṣṇam arghyeṇa arcitavān asi ॥2-34-14॥
[किम् (kim) - what; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; अवमानात् (avamānāt) - from insult; हि (hi) - indeed; यत् (yat) - which; इमम् (imam) - this; राजसंसदि (rājasaṃsadi) - in the royal assembly; अप्राप्तलक्षणम् (aprāptalakṣaṇam) - not having attained the mark; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; अर्घ्येण (arghyeṇa) - with arghya (honorary offering); अर्चितवान् (arcitavān) - you have worshipped; असि (asi) - you are;]
(What other than insult indeed is it that in this royal assembly you have worshipped Kṛṣṇa, who had not attained the mark, with arghya?)
What else but insult is it that, in this royal assembly, you have honored Kṛṣṇa—who had not attained the qualification—with the arghya offering? (2-34-14)
अकस्माद्धर्मपुत्रस्य धर्मात्मेति यशो गतम्। को हि धर्मच्युते पूजामेवं युक्तां प्रयोजयेत् ॥ योऽयं वृष्णिकुले जातो राजानं हतवान्पुरा ॥२-३४-१५॥
akasmāddharmaputrasya dharmātmeti yaśo gatam। ko hi dharmacchyute pūjāmevaṃ yuktāṃ prayojayet॥ yo'yaṃ vṛṣṇikule jāto rājānaṃ hatavānpurā॥2-34-15॥
[अकस्मात् (akasmāt) - suddenly; धर्मपुत्रस्य (dharmaputrasya) - of the son of Dharma; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; इति (iti) - thus; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; गतम् (gatam) - has gone; कः (kaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मच्युते (dharmacchyute) - in one fallen from righteousness; पूजाम् (pūjām) - honour; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; युक्ताम् (yuktām) - befitting; प्रयोजयेत् (prayojayet) - would perform; यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; वृष्णिकुले (vṛṣṇikule) - in the race of Vṛṣṇi; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; हतवान् (hatavān) - has slain; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Suddenly, the fame of the son of Dharma as 'righteous-souled' has gone. Who indeed would perform such befitting honour for one fallen from righteousness? He who was born in the Vṛṣṇi race has formerly slain the king. (2-34-15))
Suddenly, the fame of the son of Dharma as 'righteous-souled' has vanished. Who would indeed perform such appropriate honour for one who has fallen from righteousness? He, who was born in the Vṛṣṇi lineage, had formerly slain the king. (2-34-15)
अद्य धर्मात्मता चैव व्यपकृष्टा युधिष्ठिरात्। कृपणत्वं निविष्टं च कृष्णेऽर्घ्यस्य निवेदनात् ॥२-३४-१६॥
adya dharmātmatā caiva vyapakṛṣṭā yudhiṣṭhirāt। kṛpaṇatvaṃ niviṣṭaṃ ca kṛṣṇe'rghyasya nivedanāt ॥2-34-16॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; धर्मात्मता (dharmātmatā) - righteousness; essence of dharma; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; व्यपकृष्टा (vyapakṛṣṭā) - withdrawn; removed; युधिष्ठिरात् (yudhiṣṭhirāt) - from Yudhishthira; कृपणत्वं (kṛpaṇatvaṃ) - wretchedness; misery; निविष्टं (niviṣṭaṃ) - entered; settled; च (ca) - and; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - in Krishna; अर्घ्यस्य (arghyasya) - of the arghya (offering); निवेदनात् (nivedanāt) - from the offering; due to the presentation;]
(Today, righteousness and indeed its essence has been withdrawn from Yudhishthira; and wretchedness has entered Krishna due to the offering of the arghya.)
Today, the essence of righteousness has departed from Yudhishthira, and misery has settled in Krishna because of the offering of the arghya. (2-34-16)
यदि भीताश्च कौन्तेयाः कृपणाश्च तपस्विनः। ननु त्वयापि बोद्धव्यं यां पूजां माधवोऽर्हति ॥२-३४-१७॥
yadi bhītāś ca kaunteyāḥ kṛpaṇāś ca tapasvinaḥ। nanu tvayāpi boddhavyaṃ yāṃ pūjāṃ mādhavo'rhati ॥2-34-17॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; भीताः (bhītāḥ) - frightened ones; च (ca) - and; कौन्तेयाः (kaunteyāḥ) - sons of Kunti; कृपणाः (kṛpaṇāḥ) - miserable ones; च (ca) - and; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - ascetics; ननु (nanu) - indeed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अपि (api) - also; बोद्धव्यम् (boddhavyam) - should be understood; याम् (yām) - which; पूजाम् (pūjām) - honor; माधवः (mādhavaḥ) - Madhava (Krishna); अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; ॥२-३४-१७॥ (॥2-34-17॥) - (2-34-17);]
(If the sons of Kunti are frightened and miserable ascetics, indeed, by you also should be understood which honor Madhava deserves.)
If the sons of Kunti are frightened and miserable ascetics, surely you too must understand the honor that Madhava deserves. (2-34-17)
अथ वा कृपणैरेतामुपनीतां जनार्दन। पूजामनर्हः कस्मात्त्वमभ्यनुज्ञातवानसि ॥२-३४-१८॥
atha vā kṛpaṇair etām upanītāṃ janārdana। pūjām anarhaḥ kasmāt tvam abhyanujñātavān asi ॥2-34-18॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वा (vā) - or; कृपणैः (kṛpaṇaiḥ) - by the pitiable; by the miserable; एताम् (etām) - this (feminine accusative singular); उपनीताम् (upanītām) - brought; presented; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana; पूजाम् (pūjām) - worship; honour; अनर्हः (anarhaḥ) - unworthy; not deserving; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; for what reason; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अभ्यनुज्ञातवान् (abhyanujñātavān) - have permitted; have allowed; असि (asi) - are;]
(Now or by the pitiable, this (worship) brought, O Janardana, worship unworthy, why you have permitted are.)
O Janardana, why have you permitted this worship, brought by the pitiable, though it is unworthy? (2-34-18)
अयुक्तामात्मनः पूजां त्वं पुनर्बहु मन्यसे। हविषः प्राप्य निष्यन्दं प्राशितुं श्वेव निर्जने ॥२-३४-१९॥
ayuktām-ātmanaḥ pūjāṃ tvaṃ punar-bahu manyase। haviṣaḥ prāpya niṣyandaṃ prāśituṃ śveva nirjane ॥2-34-19॥
[अयुक्ताम् (ayuktām) - not properly performed; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - by oneself; पूजाम् (pūjām) - worship; त्वम् (tvam) - you; पुनः (punar) - again; बहु (bahu) - much; मन्यसे (manyase) - you consider; हविषः (haviṣaḥ) - of the oblation; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; निष्यन्दम् (niṣyandam) - remnant; प्राशितुम् (prāśitum) - to eat; श्वा (śvā) - dog; इव (iva) - like; निर्जने (nirjane) - in solitude;]
(You, again, consider as much the worship not properly performed by yourself, having obtained the remnant of the oblation, to eat like a dog in solitude.)
You again regard as significant the worship you have not properly performed yourself, and, having obtained the remnant of the oblation, you wish to eat it like a dog in solitude. (2-34-19)
न त्वयं पार्थिवेन्द्राणामवमानः प्रयुज्यते। त्वामेव कुरवो व्यक्तं प्रलम्भन्ते जनार्दन ॥२-३४-२०॥
na tvayaṃ pārthivendrāṇām avamānaḥ prayujyate. tvām eva kuravo vyaktaṃ pralambhante janārdana ॥2-34-20॥
[न (na) - not; त्वयम् (tvayam) - by you; पार्थिवेन्द्राणाम् (pārthivendrāṇām) - of the kings; अवमानः (avamānaḥ) - insult; प्रयुज्यते (prayujyate) - is committed; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; एव (eva) - only; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; व्यक्तम् (vyaktam) - clearly; प्रलम्भन्ते (pralambhante) - are insulting; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana;]
(Not by you of the kings insult is committed. You only the Kurus clearly are insulting, O Janardana.)
O Janardana, it is not you who have insulted the kings. It is clear that only the Kurus are insulting you. (2-34-20)
क्लीबे दारक्रिया यादृगन्धे वा रूपदर्शनम्। अराज्ञो राजवत्पूजा तथा ते मधुसूदन ॥२-३४-२१॥
klībe dārakriyā yādṛgandhe vā rūpadarśanam। arājño rājavatpūjā tathā te madhusūdana ॥2-34-21॥
[क्लीबे (klībe) - in the impotent; दारक्रिया (dārakriyā) - wife-ritual; यादृगन्धे (yādṛgandhe) - such-smell; वा (vā) - or; रूपदर्शनम् (rūpadarśanam) - form-seeing; अराज्ञः (arājñaḥ) - of the non-king; राजवत् (rājavat) - like a king; पूजा (pūjā) - worship; तथा (tathā) - so; ते (te) - to you; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusudana;]
(In the impotent, wife-ritual, such-smell or form-seeing; of the non-king, worship like a king so to you, O Madhusudana.)
O Madhusudana, just as performing marriage rites among the impotent, or perceiving fragrance or beauty, so is the worship of a non-king like that of a king to you. (2-34-21)
दृष्टो युधिष्ठिरो राजा दृष्टो भीष्मश्च यादृशः। वासुदेवोऽप्ययं दृष्टः सर्वमेतद्यथातथम् ॥२-३४-२२॥
dṛṣṭo yudhiṣṭhiro rājā dṛṣṭo bhīṣmaś ca yādṛśaḥ। vāsudevo'py ayaṃ dṛṣṭaḥ sarvam etad yathā-tatham ॥2-34-22॥
[दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; राजा (rājā) - king; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; च (ca) - and; यादृशः (yādṛśaḥ) - as he was; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; अपि (api) - also; अयम् (ayam) - this; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; यथा (yathā) - as; तथम् (tatham) - thus;]
(Yudhiṣṭhira the king has been seen, Bhīṣma has been seen as he was, and this Vāsudeva also has been seen; all this (has happened) just as it is.)
King Yudhiṣṭhira has been seen, Bhīṣma has been seen as he was, and this Vāsudeva too has been seen; all this has occurred exactly as it is. (2-34-22)
इत्युक्त्वा शिशुपालस्तानुत्थाय परमासनात्। निर्ययौ सदसस्तस्मात्सहितो राजभिस्तदा ॥२-३४-२३॥
ity uktvā śiśupālas tān utthāya paramāsanāt। niryayau sadasas tasmāt sahito rājabhiḥ tadā ॥2-34-23॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; शिशुपालः (śiśupālaḥ) - Śiśupāla; तान् (tān) - them; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; परमासनात् (paramāsanāt) - from the excellent seat; निर्ययौ (niryayau) - departed; सदसः (sadasaḥ) - from the assembly; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; राजभिः (rājabhiḥ) - with the kings; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus having spoken, Śiśupāla, having risen from the excellent seat, departed from that assembly together with the kings then.)
Having said this, Śiśupāla rose from the excellent seat and, together with the kings, left the assembly at that time. (2-34-23)
