Pancharatra: Bhishma justifies why Krishna deserves the highest honour.

ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा शिशुपालमुपाद्रवत्। उवाच चैनं मधुरं सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वचः ॥२-३५-१॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā śiśupālam upādravat। uvāca cainaṃ madhuraṃ sāntvapūrvam idaṃ vacaḥ ॥2-35-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; राजा (rājā) - king; शिशुपालम् (śiśupālam) - Shishupala; उपाद्रवत् (upādravat) - approached; उवाच (uvāca) - said; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - to him; मधुरम् (madhuram) - sweet; सान्त्वपूर्वम् (sāntvapūrvam) - with conciliation; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(Then King Yudhishthira approached Shishupala and said to him this sweet speech with conciliation.)
Then King Yudhishthira approached Shishupala and addressed him with these conciliatory and gentle words. (2-35-1)
नेदं युक्तं महीपाल यादृशं वै त्वमुक्तवान्। अधर्मश्च परो राजन्पारुष्यं च निरर्थकम् ॥२-३५-२॥
nedaṃ yuktaṃ mahīpāla yādṛśaṃ vai tvamuktavān। adharmaśca paro rājan pāruṣyaṃ ca nirarthakam ॥2-35-2॥
[न (na) - not; इदं (idaṃ) - this; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - proper; महीपाल (mahīpāla) - O king; यादृशं (yādṛśaṃ) - such as; वै (vai) - indeed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - have spoken; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; च (ca) - and; परः (paraḥ) - great; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पारुष्यं (pāruṣyaṃ) - harshness; च (ca) - and; निरर्थकम् (nirarthakam) - meaningless;]
(Not this proper O king such as indeed you have spoken. Unrighteousness and great O king harshness and meaningless.)
O king, what you have spoken is not proper. It is great unrighteousness, harshness, and meaningless. (2-35-2)
न हि धर्मं परं जातु नावबुध्येत पार्थिव। भीष्मः शान्तनवस्त्वेनं मावमंस्था अतोऽन्यथा ॥२-३५-३॥
na hi dharmaṃ paraṃ jātu nāvabudhyeta pārthiva। bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavas tvenaṃ māvamansṭhā ato'nyathā ॥2-35-3॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - dharma; परं (paraṃ) - higher; जातु (jātu) - ever; न (na) - not; अवबुध्येत (avabudhyeta) - would understand; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Shantanu; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एनम् (enam) - him; मा (mā) - do not; अवमंस्था (avamansṭhā) - despise; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
(Not indeed dharma higher ever would understand, O king; Bhishma, son of Shantanu, you him do not despise, therefore otherwise.)
O king, no one ever understands a dharma higher than this; Bhishma, son of Shantanu, do not despise him for any other reason. (2-35-3)
पश्य चेमान्महीपालांस्त्वत्तो वृद्धतमान्बहून्। मृष्यन्ते चार्हणां कृष्णे तद्वत्त्वं क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥२-३५-४॥
paśya cemān mahīpālāṁs tvatto vṛddhatamān bahūn | mṛśyante cārhaṇāṁ kṛṣṇe tadvattvaṁ kṣantum arhasi ||2-35-4||
[पश्य (paśya) - see; च (ca) - and; इमान् (imān) - these; महीपालान् (mahīpālān) - kings; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; वृद्धतमान् (vṛddhatamān) - most senior; बहून् (bahūn) - many; मृष्यन्ते (mṛśyante) - are tolerated; च (ca) - and; अर्हणाम् (arhaṇām) - of honors; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - O Krishna; तद्वत् (tadvat) - likewise; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; क्षन्तुम् (kṣantum) - to forgive; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are worthy;]
(See and these kings, from you most senior many, are tolerated and of honors, O Krishna, likewise you to forgive are worthy.)
See, O Krishna, these many kings, most senior to you, are tolerated and honored; likewise, you should also be forgiving. (2-35-4)
वेद तत्त्वेन कृष्णं हि भीष्मश्चेदिपते भृशम्। न ह्येनं त्वं तथा वेत्थ यथैनं वेद कौरवः ॥२-३५-५॥
veda tattvena kṛṣṇaṃ hi bhīṣmaś cedipate bhṛśam। na hy enaṃ tvaṃ tathā vettha yathainaṃ veda kauravaḥ ॥2-35-5॥
[वेद (veda) - knows; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - in reality; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; हि (hi) - indeed; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; चेदिपते (cedipate) - O king of the Cedis; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - thoroughly; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; एनम् (enam) - him; त्वम् (tvam) - you; तथा (tathā) - in that way; वेत्थ (vettha) - know; यथा (yathā) - as; एनम् (enam) - him; वेद (veda) - knows; कौरवः (kauravaḥ) - the Kaurava (Bhīṣma);]
(Bhīṣma, O king of the Cedis, indeed knows Kṛṣṇa in reality thoroughly; you indeed do not know him in that way as the Kaurava knows him.)
O king of the Cedis, Bhīṣma indeed knows Kṛṣṇa in reality and thoroughly; you do not know him in the same way as the Kaurava does. (2-35-5)

नास्मा अनुनयो देयो नायमर्हति सान्त्वनम्। लोकवृद्धतमे कृष्णे योऽर्हणां नानुमन्यते ॥२-३५-६॥
nāsmā anunayo deyo nāyam arhati sāntvanam। lokavṛddhatame kṛṣṇe yo'rhaṇāṃ nānumanyate ॥2-35-6॥
[न (na) - not; अस्मा (asmā) - to him; अनुनयः (anunayaḥ) - conciliation; देयः (deyaḥ) - should be given; न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this (person); अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; सान्त्वनम् (sāntvanam) - soothing words; लोकवृद्धतमे (lokavṛddhatame) - most senior in the world; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - in Kṛṣṇa; यः (yaḥ) - who; अर्हणाम् (arhaṇām) - honor; न (na) - not; अनुमन्यते (anuman-yate) - approves;]
(Not to him should conciliation be given; this one does not deserve soothing words. Among those most senior in the world, in Kṛṣṇa, who does not approve of honor.)
He should not be conciliated; he does not deserve soothing words. Even among the most senior in the world, Kṛṣṇa does not approve of honor. (2-35-6)
क्षत्रियः क्षत्रियं जित्वा रणे रणकृतां वरः। यो मुञ्चति वशे कृत्वा गुरुर्भवति तस्य सः ॥२-३५-७॥
kṣatriyaḥ kṣatriyaṃ jitvā raṇe raṇakṛtāṃ varaḥ। yo muñcati vaśe kṛtvā gurur bhavati tasya saḥ॥2-35-7॥
[क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - warrior; (from kṣatra - power, rule; suffix -iyaḥ); क्षत्रियं (kṣatriyaṃ) - warrior (object); जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; (from √ji - to conquer; absolutive); रणे (raṇe) - in battle; (locative singular of raṇa - battle); रणकृतां (raṇakṛtām) - of those who perform battle; (genitive plural of raṇakṛt - battle-doer); वरः (varaḥ) - the best; (superlative); यः (yaḥ) - who; (relative pronoun); मुञ्चति (muñcati) - releases; (from √muc - to release); वशे (vaśe) - in control; (locative singular of vaśa - control); कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; (from √kṛ - to do/make; absolutive); गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; (from guru - heavy, venerable); भवति (bhavati) - becomes; (from √bhū - to be); तस्य (tasya) - of him; (genitive singular of tat - he); सः (saḥ) - he; (demonstrative pronoun);]
(A warrior, having conquered a warrior in battle, among those who perform battle, is the best; he who, having brought (someone) under control, releases (him), becomes his teacher.)
A warrior who conquers another warrior in battle is the best among those who fight; but he who, having subdued someone, releases him, becomes his teacher. (2-35-7)
अस्यां च समितौ राज्ञामेकमप्यजितं युधि। न पश्यामि महीपालं सात्वतीपुत्रतेजसा ॥२-३५-८॥
asyāṃ ca samitau rājñām ekam api ajitam yudhi। na paśyāmi mahīpālaṃ sātvati-putra-tejasā ॥2-35-8॥
[अस्याम् (asyām) - in this; (feminine locative singular of idam) च (ca) - and; समितौ (samitau) - in the assembly; (locative singular of samiti) राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of kings; (genitive plural of rājā) एकम् (ekam) - one; अपि (api) - even; अजितम् (ajitam) - unconquered; (accusative singular masculine of ajita) युधि (yudhi) - in battle; (locative singular of yudhi) न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; महीपालम् (mahīpālam) - king; (accusative singular of mahīpāla) सात्वतीपुत्रतेजसा (sātvati-putra-tejasā) - by the energy of Satyavati's son; (instrumental singular compound);]
(And in this assembly of kings, not even one unconquered king do I see in battle by the energy of Satyavati's son.)
And in this assembly of kings, I do not see even a single king unconquered in battle by the energy of Satyavati's son. (2-35-8)
न हि केवलमस्माकमयमर्च्यतमोऽच्युतः। त्रयाणामपि लोकानामर्चनीयो जनार्दनः ॥२-३५-९॥
na hi kevalamasmākamayamarcyatamo'cyutaḥ। trayāṇāmapi lokānāmarcanīyo janārdanaḥ ॥2-35-9॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; केवलम् (kevalam) - only; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - of us; अयम् (ayam) - this; अर्च्यतमः (arcyatamaḥ) - most worthy of worship; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - Acyuta (the infallible one, Krishna); त्रयाणाम् (trayāṇām) - of the three; अपि (api) - even; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; अर्चनीयः (arcanīyaḥ) - worthy of worship; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana (Krishna, the remover of people's distress);]
(Not indeed only of us this most worthy of worship Acyuta; of the three even worlds worthy of worship Janardana.)
Acyuta is not only the most worthy of worship for us; Janardana is worthy of worship even for the three worlds. (2-35-9)
कृष्णेन हि जिता युद्धे बहवः क्षत्रियर्षभाः। जगत्सर्वं च वार्ष्णेये निखिलेन प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥२-३५-१०॥
kṛṣṇena hi jitā yuddhe bahavaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ। jagatsarvaṃ ca vārṣṇeye nikhilena pratiṣṭhitam ॥2-35-10॥
[कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; हि (hi) - indeed; जिता (jitā) - conquered; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; क्षत्रियर्षभाः (kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among kṣatriyas; जगत् (jagat) - the world; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; च (ca) - and; वार्ष्णेये (vārṣṇeye) - by the descendant of Vṛṣṇi; निखिलेन (nikhilena) - entirely; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - established;]
(By Kṛṣṇa indeed many bulls among kṣatriyas were conquered in battle; and the whole world was entirely established by the descendant of Vṛṣṇi.)
Indeed, many mighty kṣatriyas were conquered in battle by Kṛṣṇa; and the entire world was established by the descendant of Vṛṣṇi. (2-35-10)
तस्मात्सत्स्वपि वृद्धेषु कृष्णमर्चाम नेतरान्। एवं वक्तुं न चार्हस्त्वं मा भूत्ते बुद्धिरीदृशी ॥२-३५-११॥
tasmātsatsvapi vṛddheṣu kṛṣṇamarcāma netarān। evaṃ vaktuṃ na cārhastvaṃ mā bhūtte buddhirīdṛśī ॥2-35-11॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सत्सु (satsu) - among the good; अपि (api) - even; वृद्धेषु (vṛddheṣu) - among the elders; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; अर्चाम (arcāma) - let us worship; न (na) - not; एतरान् (netarān) - others; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अर्हः (arhaḥ) - worthy; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मा (mā) - do not; भूत् (bhūt) - let be; ते (te) - your; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - mind; ईदृशी (īdṛśī) - such as this;]
(Therefore, even among the good and the elders, let us worship Kṛṣṇa, not others. Thus, to speak is not worthy for you, do not let your mind be such as this.)
Therefore, even among the virtuous and elders, let us worship Kṛṣṇa and not others. You should not speak thus, nor should your mind be like this. (2-35-11)
ज्ञानवृद्धा मया राजन्बहवः पर्युपासिताः। तेषां कथयतां शौरेरहं गुणवतो गुणान् ॥ समागतानामश्रौषं बहून्बहुमतान्सताम् ॥२-३५-१२॥
jñānavṛddhā mayā rājanbahavaḥ paryupāsitāḥ। teṣāṃ kathayatāṃ śaurerahaṃ guṇavato guṇān॥ samāgatānāmaśrauṣaṃ bahūnbahumatānsatām॥2-35-12॥
[ज्ञानवृद्धाः (jñānavṛddhāḥ) - grown in knowledge; मया (mayā) - by me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; पर्युपासिताः (paryupāsitāḥ) - have been attended; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; कथयताम् (kathayatām) - speaking; शौरेः (śaureḥ) - of Śauri (Kṛṣṇa); अहम् (aham) - I; गुणवतः (guṇavataḥ) - of the virtuous; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; समागतानाम् (samāgatānām) - of those assembled; अश्रौषम् (aśrauṣam) - I heard; बहून् (bahūn) - many; बहुमतान् (bahumatān) - highly esteemed; सताम् (satām) - of the virtuous;]
(Grown in knowledge by me, O king, many have been attended. Of them, while speaking of Śauri, I (heard) the qualities of the virtuous. Of those assembled, I heard many, highly esteemed, of the virtuous.)
O king, I have attended many who are grown in knowledge. Among them, as they spoke of Śauri, I heard the qualities of the virtuous. Of those assembled, I heard many highly esteemed virtues of the good. (2-35-12)
कर्माण्यपि च यान्यस्य जन्मप्रभृति धीमतः। बहुशः कथ्यमानानि नरैर्भूयः श्रुतानि मे ॥२-३५-१३॥
karmāṇy api ca yāny asya janma-prabhṛti dhīmataḥ। bahuśaḥ kathyamānāni narair bhūyaḥ śrutāni me ॥2-35-13॥
[कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; यानि (yāni) - which; अस्य (asya) - of him; जन्मप्रभृति (janma-prabhṛti) - from birth; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; कथ्यमानानि (kathyamānāni) - being recounted; नरैः (naraiḥ) - by men; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; श्रुतानि (śrutāni) - heard; मे (me) - by me;]
(Actions also and which of him from birth of the wise many times being recounted by men again heard by me.)
The actions of that wise one, from his birth onwards, which have often been recounted by men, I have heard again and again. (2-35-13)
न केवलं वयं कामाच्चेदिराज जनार्दनम्। न सम्बन्धं पुरस्कृत्य कृतार्थं वा कथञ्चन ॥२-३५-१४॥
na kevalaṃ vayaṃ kāmāccedirāja janārdanam। na sambandhaṃ puraskṛtya kṛtārthaṃ vā kathañcana ॥2-35-14॥
[न (na) - not; केवलं (kevalaṃ) - only; वयम् (vayam) - we; कामात् (kāmāt) - from desire; चेदिराज (cedirāja) - the king of Cedi; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janardana (Krishna); न (na) - not; सम्बन्धं (sambandhaṃ) - relationship; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - having considered; कृतार्थं (kṛtārtham) - one who has achieved his purpose; वा (vā) - or; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way;]
(Not only we, from desire, (seek) the king of Cedi, Janardana. Not (even) considering relationship, or one who has achieved his purpose, in any way.)
Not only do we, out of desire, seek the king of Cedi, O Janardana, but not even considering relationship or whether one has achieved his purpose in any way. (2-35-14)
अर्चामहेऽर्चितं सद्भिर्भुवि भौमसुखावहम्। यशः शौर्यं जयं चास्य विज्ञायार्चां प्रयुज्महे ॥२-३५-१५॥
arcāmahe'rcitaṃ sadbhirbhuvi bhaumasukhāvaham। yaśaḥ śauryaṃ jayaṃ cāsya vijñāyārcāṃ prayujmahe ॥2-35-15॥
[अर्चामहे (arcāmahe) - we worship; अर्चितं (arcitaṃ) - worshipped; सद्भिः (sadbhiḥ) - by the virtuous; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; भौमसुखावहम् (bhaumasukhāvaham) - bringing earthly happiness; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; शौर्यम् (śauryam) - valor; जयं (jayaṃ) - victory; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having known; अर्चां (arcām) - worship; प्रयुज्महे (prayujmahe) - we perform;]
(We worship the one worshipped by the virtuous on earth, who brings earthly happiness; having known his fame, valor, and victory, we perform worship.)
We worship him who is worshipped by the virtuous on earth and brings earthly happiness; knowing his fame, valor, and victory, we perform his worship. (2-35-15)
न हि कश्चिदिहास्माभिः सुबालोऽप्यपरीक्षितः। गुणैर्वृद्धानतिक्रम्य हरिरर्च्यतमो मतः ॥२-३५-१६॥
na hi kaścidi hāsmābhiḥ subālo'pyaparīkṣitaḥ। guṇairvṛddhānatikramya harirarcya-tamo mataḥ ॥2-35-16॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; इह (iha) - here; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; सुबालः (subālaḥ) - very young boy; अपि (api) - even; अपरीक्षितः (aparīkṣitaḥ) - not examined; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by virtues; वृद्धान् (vṛddhān) - elders; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - surpassing; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; अर्च्यतमः (arcya-tamaḥ) - most worthy of worship; मतः (mataḥ) - is considered;]
(Not indeed anyone here by us, even a very young boy, not examined, by virtues surpassing elders, Hari is considered most worthy of worship.)
Indeed, no one here, not even a very young boy, has been left unexamined by us; surpassing the elders in virtues, Hari is considered the most worthy of worship. (2-35-16)
ज्ञानवृद्धो द्विजातीनां क्षत्रियाणां बलाधिकः। पूज्ये ताविह गोविन्दे हेतू द्वावपि संस्थितौ ॥२-३५-१७॥
jñānavṛddho dvijātīnāṃ kṣatriyāṇāṃ balādhikaḥ। pūjye tāviha govinde hetū dvāvapi saṃsthitau ॥2-35-17॥
[ज्ञानवृद्धः (jñānavṛddhaḥ) - one advanced in knowledge; द्विजातीनाम् (dvijātīnām) - of the twice-born; क्षत्रियाणाम् (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the kṣatriyas; बलाधिकः (balādhikaḥ) - one superior in strength; पूज्ये (pūjye) - worthy of worship; तौ (tau) - those two; इह (iha) - here; गोविन्दे (govinde) - Govinda; हेतू (hetū) - reasons; द्वौ (dvau) - two; अपि (api) - also; संस्थितौ (saṃsthitau) - are established;]
(One advanced in knowledge among the twice-born and one superior in strength among the kṣatriyas—these two are worthy of worship here; in Govinda, both these reasons are established.)
Among the twice-born, one who is advanced in knowledge, and among the kṣatriyas, one who is superior in strength—these two are worthy of worship here; in Govinda, both these reasons are present. (2-35-17)
वेदवेदाङ्गविज्ञानं बलं चाप्यमितं तथा। नृणां हि लोके कस्यास्ति विशिष्टं केशवादृते ॥२-३५-१८॥
vedavedāṅgavijñānaṃ balaṃ cāpyamitaṃ tathā। nṛṇāṃ hi loke kasyāsti viśiṣṭaṃ keśavādṛte ॥2-35-18॥
[वेद (veda) - knowledge; वेदाङ्ग (vedāṅga) - limbs of the Veda; विज्ञानं (vijñānaṃ) - special knowledge; बलं (balaṃ) - strength; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अमितं (amitaṃ) - immeasurable; तथा (tathā) - likewise; नृणां (nṛṇāṃ) - of men; हि (hi) - indeed; लोके (loke) - in the world; कस्य (kasya) - of whom; अस्ति (asti) - is; विशिष्टं (viśiṣṭaṃ) - distinguished; केशव (keśava) - Keśava; अदृते (adṛte) - except; ॥२-३५-१८॥ (॥2-35-18॥) -;]
(Knowledge of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas, special knowledge, strength, and also immeasurable (strength), likewise; of men indeed in the world, of whom is distinguished except Keśava?)
Who among men in this world possesses distinguished knowledge of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas, special knowledge, and immeasurable strength, except Keśava? (2-35-18)
दानं दाक्ष्यं श्रुतं शौर्यं ह्रीः कीर्तिर्बुद्धिरुत्तमा। संनतिः श्रीर्धृतिस्तुष्टिः पुष्टिश्च नियताच्युते ॥२-३५-१९॥
dānaṃ dākṣyaṃ śrutaṃ śauryaṃ hrīḥ kīrtirbuddhiruttamā। saṃnatiḥ śrīrdhṛtistuṣṭiḥ puṣṭiśca niyatācyute ॥2-35-19॥
[दानम् (dānam) - gift; दाक्ष्यम् (dākṣyam) - dexterity; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - learning; शौर्यम् (śauryam) - valor; ह्रीः (hrīḥ) - modesty; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; उत्तमा (uttamā) - excellent; संनतिः (saṃnatiḥ) - humility; श्रीः (śrīḥ) - prosperity; धृतिः (dhṛtiḥ) - steadfastness; तुष्टिः (tuṣṭiḥ) - contentment; पुष्टिः (puṣṭiḥ) - nourishment; च (ca) - and; नियताः (niyatāḥ) - fixed; अच्युते (acyute) - in Acyuta (the infallible, i.e., Viṣṇu);]
(Gift, dexterity, learning, valor, modesty, fame, intellect (which is) excellent, humility, prosperity, steadfastness, contentment, nourishment, and (all these) fixed in Acyuta (Viṣṇu).)
Gift, skill, learning, valor, modesty, fame, excellent intellect, humility, prosperity, steadfastness, contentment, and nourishment — all these are firmly established in Acyuta (Viṣṇu). (2-35-19)
तमिमं सर्वसम्पन्नमाचार्यं पितरं गुरुम्। अर्च्यमर्चितमर्चार्हं सर्वे संमन्तुमर्हथ ॥२-३५-२०॥
tam imaṃ sarvasampannam ācāryaṃ pitaraṃ gurum। arcyam arcitam arcārhaṃ sarve saṃmantum arhatha ॥2-35-20॥
[तम् (tam) - him; इमम् (imam) - this; सर्वसम्पन्नम् (sarvasampannam) - endowed with all virtues; आचार्यम् (ācāryam) - teacher; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; गुरुम् (gurum) - preceptor; अर्च्यम् (arcyam) - worthy of worship; अर्चितम् (arcitam) - worshipped; अर्चार्हम् (arcārham) - deserving worship; सर्वे (sarve) - all; संमन्तुम् (saṃmantum) - to honor; अर्हथ (arhatha) - you ought;]
(Him, this one endowed with all virtues, teacher, father, preceptor, worthy of worship, worshipped, deserving worship, all (of you) ought to honor.)
All of you ought to honor him, this teacher, father, and preceptor, who is endowed with all virtues and is worthy of worship, worshipped, and deserving of worship. (2-35-20)
ऋत्विग्गुरुर्विवाह्यश्च स्नातको नृपतिः प्रियः। सर्वमेतद्धृषीकेशे तस्मादभ्यर्चितोऽच्युतः ॥२-३५-२१॥
ṛtvig-gurur-vivāhyaś-ca snātako nṛpatiḥ priyaḥ। sarvam-etad-dhṛṣīkeśe tasmād-abhyarcito'cyutaḥ ॥2-35-21॥
[ऋत्विक् (ṛtvik) - priest; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; विवाह्यः (vivāhyaḥ) - one to be married; च (ca) - and; स्नातकः (snātakaḥ) - one who has completed studies; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; धृषीकेशे (dhṛṣīkeśe) - to Dhṛṣīkeśa (Kṛṣṇa); तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अभ्यर्चितः (abhyarcitaḥ) - worshipped; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa);]
(The priest, teacher, one to be married, and one who has completed studies, the king, (are) dear; all this (was) to Dhṛṣīkeśa; therefore, Acyuta was worshipped.)
The priest, the teacher, the bridegroom, the graduate, and the king are all dear; therefore, all these were offered to Dhṛṣīkeśa, and thus Acyuta was worshipped. (2-35-21)
कृष्ण एव हि लोकानामुत्पत्तिरपि चाप्ययः। कृष्णस्य हि कृते भूतमिदं विश्वं समर्पितम् ॥२-३५-२२॥
kṛṣṇa eva hi lokānām utpattir api ca āpyayaḥ। kṛṣṇasya hi kṛte bhūtam idaṃ viśvaṃ samarpitam ॥2-35-22॥
[कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; (the all-attractive one; name of the deity); एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; हि (hi) - for; indeed; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; उत्पत्तिः (utpattiḥ) - origin; creation; अपि (api) - also; even; च (ca) - and; अप्ययः (āpyayaḥ) - dissolution; destruction; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Kṛṣṇa; हि (hi) - indeed; for; कृते (kṛte) - for the sake of; on account of; भूतम् (bhūtam) - all beings; existence; इदं (idaṃ) - this; विश्वम् (viśvam) - universe; all; समर्पितम् (samarpitam) - offered; dedicated;]
(Kṛṣṇa indeed for the worlds origin also and dissolution; of Kṛṣṇa indeed for the sake of all beings this universe is offered.)
Kṛṣṇa alone is the origin and dissolution of the worlds; for the sake of Kṛṣṇa, indeed, this entire universe of beings is dedicated. (2-35-22)
एष प्रकृतिरव्यक्ता कर्ता चैव सनातनः। परश्च सर्वभूतेभ्यस्तस्माद्वृद्धतमोऽच्युतः ॥२-३५-२३॥
eṣa prakṛtiravyaktā kartā caiva sanātanaḥ। paraśca sarvabhūtebhyastasmādvṛddhatamo'cyutaḥ ॥2-35-23॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; प्रकृतिः (prakṛtiḥ) - nature; अव्यक्ता (avyaktā) - unmanifest; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; परः (paraḥ) - transcendent; च (ca) - and; सर्वभूतेभ्यः (sarvabhūtebhyaḥ) - from all beings; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; वृद्धतमः (vṛddhatamaḥ) - the most ancient; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - the infallible;]
(This nature (prakṛti) is unmanifest, the doer, and indeed eternal; and the transcendent, from all beings, therefore, the most ancient, the infallible.)
This nature is unmanifest, the eternal doer; and the transcendent, therefore, is the most ancient and infallible among all beings. (2-35-23)
बुद्धिर्मनो महान्वायुस्तेजोऽम्भः खं मही च या। चतुर्विधं च यद्भूतं सर्वं कृष्णे प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥२-३५-२४॥
buddhirmano mahānvāyustejo’mbhaḥ khaṃ mahī ca yā। caturvidhaṃ ca yadbhūtaṃ sarvaṃ kṛṣṇe pratiṣṭhitam ॥2-35-24॥
[बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; महान् (mahān) - the great principle (mahat); वायुः (vāyuḥ) - air; तेजः (tejaḥ) - fire; अम्भः (ambhaḥ) - water; खम् (kham) - ether; मही (mahī) - earth; च (ca) - and; या (yā) - which; चतुर्विधम् (caturvidham) - fourfold; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - whatever; भूतम् (bhūtam) - being; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - in Kṛṣṇa; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - established;]
(Intellect, mind, the great principle, air, fire, water, ether, earth, and which is fourfold, and whatever being, all is established in Kṛṣṇa.)
Intellect, mind, the great principle (mahat), air, fire, water, ether, earth, and all fourfold beings—everything is established in Kṛṣṇa. (2-35-24)
आदित्यश्चन्द्रमाश्चैव नक्षत्राणि ग्रहाश्च ये। दिशश्चोपदिशश्चैव सर्वं कृष्णे प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥२-३५-२५॥
ādityaś candramāś caiva nakṣatrāṇi grahāś ca ye। diśaś copadiśaś caiva sarvaṃ kṛṣṇe pratiṣṭhitam ॥2-35-25॥
[आदित्यः (ādityaḥ) - sun; च (ca) - and; चन्द्रमाः (candramāḥ) - moon; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नक्षत्राणि (nakṣatrāṇi) - stars; ग्रहाः (grahāḥ) - planets; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - which; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; च (ca) - and; उपदिशः (upadiśaḥ) - intermediate directions; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - in Kṛṣṇa; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - established;]
(The sun and the moon indeed, the stars, the planets and those, the directions and the intermediate directions indeed, all are established in Kṛṣṇa.)
The sun, the moon, the stars, the planets, the directions and the intermediate directions—all are established in Kṛṣṇa. (2-35-25)
अयं तु पुरुषो बालः शिशुपालो न बुध्यते। सर्वत्र सर्वदा कृष्णं तस्मादेवं प्रभाषते ॥२-३५-२६॥
ayaṃ tu puruṣo bālaḥ śiśupālo na budhyate। sarvatra sarvadā kṛṣṇaṃ tasmādevaṃ prabhāṣate ॥2-35-26॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this; तु (tu) - but; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; बालः (bālaḥ) - child; शिशुपालः (śiśupālaḥ) - Śiśupāla; न (na) - not; बुध्यते (budhyate) - understands; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always; कृष्णं (kṛṣṇaṃ) - Kṛṣṇa; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; प्रभाषते (prabhāṣate) - speaks;]
(This but man child Śiśupāla not understands. Everywhere always Kṛṣṇa therefore thus speaks.)
But this man, the child Śiśupāla, does not understand. Therefore, everywhere and always, he thus speaks about Kṛṣṇa. (2-35-26)
यो हि धर्मं विचिनुयादुत्कृष्टं मतिमान्नरः। स वै पश्येद्यथाधर्मं न तथा चेदिराडयम् ॥२-३५-२७॥
yo hi dharmaṃ vicinuyād utkṛṣṭaṃ matimān naraḥ। sa vai paśyed yathā adharmaṃ na tathā ca edirāḍ ayam ॥2-35-27॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - dharma; विचिनुयात् (vicinuyāt) - should investigate; उत्कृष्टम् (utkṛṣṭam) - excellent; मतिमान् (matimān) - intelligent; नरः (naraḥ) - man; सः (saḥ) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; पश्येत् (paśyet) - should see; यथा (yathā) - as; अधर्मम् (adharmaṃ) - adharma; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so; च (ca) - and; एदि-राट् (edi-rāṭ) - king of the Cedis; अयम् (ayam) - this;]
(Who indeed should investigate dharma, excellent, intelligent man; he indeed should see as adharma, not so and this king of the Cedis.)
An intelligent man who truly investigates the highest dharma will recognize what is adharma, and will not see it as this king of the Cedis does. (2-35-27)
सवृद्धबालेष्वथ वा पार्थिवेषु महात्मसु। को नार्हं मन्यते कृष्णं को वाप्येनं न पूजयेत् ॥२-३५-२८॥
savṛddhabāleṣvatha vā pārthiveṣu mahātmasu। ko nārhaṃ manyate kṛṣṇaṃ ko vāpyenaṃ na pūjayet ॥2-35-28॥
[सवृद्धबालेषु (savṛddhabāleṣu) - among the aged and the young; अथ (atha) - then; वा (vā) - or; पार्थिवेषु (pārthiveṣu) - among kings; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - among great souls; कः (kaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; अर्हम् (arham) - worthy; मन्यते (manyate) - considers; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; कः (kaḥ) - who; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; एनम् (enam) - him; न (na) - not; पूजयेत् (pūjayet) - would worship;]
(Among the aged and the young, then or among kings, among great souls, who does not consider Kṛṣṇa worthy? Who even would not worship him?)
Among the aged and the young, or among kings and great souls, who would not consider Kṛṣṇa worthy? Who indeed would not worship him? (2-35-28)
अथेमां दुष्कृतां पूजां शिशुपालो व्यवस्यति। दुष्कृतायां यथान्यायं तथायं कर्तुमर्हति ॥२-३५-२९॥
athemāṃ duṣkṛtāṃ pūjāṃ śiśupālo vyavasyati। duṣkṛtāyāṃ yathānyāyaṃ tathāyaṃ kartumarhati ॥2-35-29॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; इमां (imām) - this (feminine accusative); दुष्कृतां (duṣkṛtām) - ill-done; evil; पूजां (pūjām) - worship; homage; शिशुपालः (śiśupālaḥ) - Śiśupāla (proper noun, subject); व्यवस्यति (vyavasyati) - determines; decides; दुष्कृतायां (duṣkṛtāyām) - in evil action; in wrongdoing; यथा (yathā) - as; according as; अन्यायं (anyāyam) - unjustly; unlawfully; तथा (tathā) - so; in that manner; अयम् (ayam) - he; this one; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; to perform; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; is worthy;]
(Now, this ill-done worship Śiśupāla determines. In wrongdoing, as unjustly, so he deserves to do.)
Now, Śiśupāla determines to perform this evil worship. Since it is wrongdoing, he is justified in acting in such an unjust manner. (2-35-29)
