Pancharatra: Sahadeva roars that he will keep his foot on those who disagree.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

एवमुक्त्वा ततो भीष्मो विरराम महायशाः। व्याजहारोत्तरं तत्र सहदेवोऽर्थवद्वचः ॥२-३६-१॥
evam-uktvā tato bhīṣmo virarāma mahā-yaśāḥ। vyājāhāra uttaraṃ tatra sahadevo 'rthavad-vacaḥ ॥2-36-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; विरराम (virarāma) - ceased; महायशाः (mahā-yaśāḥ) - greatly renowned; व्याजहार (vyājāhāra) - spoke; उत्तरम् (uttaram) - reply; तत्र (tatra) - there; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; अर्थवत् (arthavat) - meaningful; वचः (vacaḥ) - words;]
(Thus having spoken, then Bhishma, greatly renowned, ceased. There, Sahadeva spoke a meaningful reply.)
After Bhishma, the greatly renowned, had thus spoken and ceased, Sahadeva then gave a meaningful reply there. (2-36-1)
केशवं केशिहन्तारमप्रमेयपराक्रमम्। पूज्यमानं मया यो वः कृष्णं न सहते नृपाः ॥२-३६-२॥
keśavaṃ keśihantāramaprameyaparākramam। pūjyamānaṃ mayā yo vaḥ kṛṣṇaṃ na sahate nṛpāḥ ॥2-36-2॥

(To Keśava, the slayer of Keśi, of immeasurable valor, being worshipped by me, he who among you does not endure Kṛṣṇa, the kings.)
To Keśava, the slayer of Keśi and of immeasurable valor, who is being worshipped by me, any of you kings who cannot endure Kṛṣṇa.
सर्वेषां बलिनां मूर्ध्नि मयेदं निहितं पदम्। एवमुक्ते मया सम्यगुत्तरं प्रब्रवीतु सः ॥२-३६-३॥
sarveṣāṃ balināṃ mūrdhni mayedaṃ nihitaṃ padam। evamukte mayā samyaguttaraṃ prabravītu saḥ ॥2-36-3॥
[सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; बलिनाम् (balinām) - of the powerful; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; मया (mayā) - by me; इदम् (idam) - this; निहितम् (nihitam) - placed; पदम् (padam) - foot; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been said; मया (mayā) - by me; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; उत्तरम् (uttaram) - answer; प्रब्रवीतु (prabravītu) - let him speak; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(On the head of all the powerful, by me this foot has been placed. Thus having been said by me properly, let him give an answer.)
I have placed this foot on the heads of all the powerful. Having thus spoken properly, let him give his answer. (2-36-3)
मतिमन्तस्तु ये केचिदाचार्यं पितरं गुरुम्। अर्च्यमर्चितमर्चार्हमनुजानन्तु ते नृपाः ॥२-३६-४॥
matimantastu ye kecidācāryaṃ pitaraṃ gurum। arcyamarcitamarcārhamanujānantu te nṛpāḥ ॥2-36-4॥
[मतिमन्तः (matimantaḥ) - possessing intelligence; तु (tu) - but; ये (ye) - who; केचित् (kecit) - some; आचार्यम् (ācāryam) - teacher; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; गुरुम् (gurum) - preceptor; अर्च्यम् (arcyam) - worthy of worship; अर्चितम् (arcitam) - worshipped; अर्चार्हम् (arcārham) - deserving worship; अनुजानन्तु (anujānantu) - let them permit; ते (te) - they; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings;]
(But those possessing intelligence, whoever some (are), (regard) the teacher, father, preceptor as worthy of worship, worshipped, deserving worship; let them permit (this); they (are) kings.)
But those who are wise, whoever they may be, consider the teacher, father, and preceptor as worthy of worship, worshipped, and deserving of worship; let them permit this; they are the true kings. (2-36-4)
ततो न व्याजहारैषां कश्चिद्बुद्धिमतां सताम्। मानिनां बलिनां राज्ञां मध्ये संदर्शिते पदे ॥२-३६-५॥
tato na vyājahāraiṣāṃ kaścidbuddhimatāṃ satām। mānināṃ balināṃ rājñāṃ madhye sandarśite pade ॥2-36-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; न (na) - not; व्याजहार (vyājahāra) - spoke; एषां (eṣām) - of these; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; बुद्धिमताम् (buddhimatām) - of the wise; सताम् (satām) - of the virtuous; मानिनाम् (māninām) - of the proud; बलिनाम् (balinām) - of the strong; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of the kings; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; संदर्शिते (sandarśite) - having been shown; पदे (pade) - position;]
(Then not spoke of these anyone of the wise, of the virtuous, of the proud, of the strong, of the kings, in the midst, having been shown position.)
Then, among these wise, virtuous, proud, and strong kings, not one spoke a word when the position was shown in their midst. (2-36-5)
ततोऽपतत्पुष्पवृष्टिः सहदेवस्य मूर्धनि। अदृश्यरूपा वाचश्चाप्यब्रुवन्साधु साध्विति ॥२-३६-६॥
tato'patatpuṣpavṛṣṭiḥ sahadevasya mūrdhani। adṛśyarūpā vācaścāpyabruvansādhu sādhviti ॥2-36-6॥

(Then a shower of flowers fell on the head of Sahadeva. And voices of invisible form also spoke, "Well done, well done," thus. (2-36-6))

आविध्यदजिनं कृष्णं भविष्यद्भूतजल्पकः। सर्वसंशयनिर्मोक्ता नारदः सर्वलोकवित् ॥२-३६-७॥
āvidhyadajinaṃ kṛṣṇaṃ bhaviṣyadbhūtajalpakaḥ। sarvasaṃśayanirmoktā nāradaḥ sarvalokavit ॥2-36-7॥
[आविध्य (āvidhya) - having put on; having girded; अजिनं (ajinam) - deerskin; skin; कृष्णं (kṛṣṇam) - black; dark; भविष्यद्भूतजल्पकः (bhaviṣyadbhūtajalpakaḥ) - one who speaks of future and past; सर्वसंशयनिर्मोक्ता (sarvasaṃśayanirmoktā) - remover of all doubts; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; sage Narada; सर्वलोकवित् (sarvalokavit) - knower of all worlds;]
(Having put on the black deerskin, one who speaks of future and past, remover of all doubts, Nārada, knower of all worlds.)

तत्राहूतागताः सर्वे सुनीथप्रमुखा गणाः। सम्प्रादृश्यन्त सङ्क्रुद्धा विवर्णवदनास्तथा ॥२-३६-८॥
tatrāhūtāgatāḥ sarve sunīthapramukhā gaṇāḥ। samprādṛśyanta saṅkruddhā vivarṇavadanāstathā ॥2-36-8॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; आहूत (āhūta) - summoned; आगताः (āgatāḥ) - arrived; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सुनीथ (sunītha) - Sunitha; प्रमुखाः (pramukhāḥ) - chiefs; गणाः (gaṇāḥ) - groups; सम् (sam) - together; प्रादृश्यन्त (prādṛśyanta) - were seen; सङ्क्रुद्धाः (saṅkruddhāḥ) - enraged; विवर्ण (vivarṇa) - pale; वदनाः (vadanāḥ) - faces; तथा (tathā) - thus;]

yudhiṣṭhirābhiṣekaṃ ca vāsudevasya cārhaṇam। abruvaṃstatra rājāno nirvedādātmaniścayāt ॥2-36-9॥
[युधिष्ठिर-अभिषेकम् (yudhiṣṭhira-abhiṣekam) - Yudhiṣṭhira's consecration; च (ca) - and; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva; च (ca) - and; अर्हणम् (arhaṇam) - honoring; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they spoke; तत्र (tatra) - there; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - the kings; निर्वेदात् (nirvedāt) - from dispassion; आत्म-निश्चयात् (ātma-niścayāt) - from self-determination;]
(Yudhiṣṭhira's consecration and the honoring of Vāsudeva, the kings there spoke, from dispassion and from self-determination.)

सुहृद्भिर्वार्यमाणानां तेषां हि वपुराबभौ। आमिषादपकृष्टानां सिंहानामिव गर्जताम् ॥२-३६-१०॥
suhṛdbhir vāryamāṇānāṃ teṣāṃ hi vapur ābabhau। āmiṣād apakṛṣṭānāṃ siṃhānām iva garjatām ॥2-36-10॥
[सुहृद्भिः (suhṛdbhiḥ) - by friends; by well-wishers; वार्यमाणानाम् (vāryamāṇānām) - of those being restrained; of those being held back; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; of those; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; वपुः (vapuḥ) - form; body; appearance; आबभौ (ābabhau) - shone; appeared; आमिषात् (āmiṣāt) - from flesh; from meat; अपकृष्टानाम् (apakṛṣṭānām) - of those drawn away; of those separated; सिंहानाम् (siṃhānām) - of lions; इव (iva) - like; as if; गर्जताम् (garjatām) - roaring; of those roaring;]
(Indeed, the form of those being restrained by friends shone, like roaring lions separated from flesh.)
The appearance of those who were being held back by their friends shone forth, just like roaring lions separated from their prey. (2-36-10)
तं बलौघमपर्यन्तं राजसागरमक्षयम्। कुर्वाणं समयं कृष्णो युद्धाय बुबुधे तदा ॥२-३६-११॥
taṃ balaugham-aparyantaṃ rājasāgaram-akṣayam। kurvāṇaṃ samayaṃ kṛṣṇo yuddhāya bubudhe tadā ॥2-36-11॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; बलौघम् (balaugham) - mass of strength; अपर्यन्तम् (aparyantam) - endless; राजसागरम् (rājasāgaram) - ocean of kings; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - imperishable; कुर्वाणम् (kurvāṇam) - making; समयम् (samayam) - agreement; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; युद्धाय (yuddhāya) - for battle; बुबुधे (bubudhe) - understood; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Him, the endless mass of strength, the imperishable ocean of kings, making an agreement, Kṛṣṇa understood then for battle.)
At that time, Kṛṣṇa realized that he, the endless mass of strength and imperishable ocean of kings, was making an agreement for battle. (2-36-11)
पूजयित्वा तु पूजार्हं ब्रह्मक्षत्रं विशेषतः। सहदेवो नृणां देवः समापयत कर्म तत् ॥२-३६-१२॥
pūjayitvā tu pūjārhaṃ brahmakṣatraṃ viśeṣataḥ। sahadevo nṛṇāṃ devaḥ samāpayata karma tat ॥2-36-12॥
[पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having worshipped; तु (tu) - but; पूजार्हम् (pūjārham) - worthy of worship; ब्रह्मक्षत्रम् (brahmakṣatram) - Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; नृणाम् (nṛṇām) - of men; देवः (devaḥ) - the lord; समापयत् (samāpayat) - completed; कर्म (karma) - the rite; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Having worshipped, but, those worthy of worship, Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas, especially, Sahadeva, of men, the lord, completed, the rite, that.)
But after worshipping those worthy of worship, especially the Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas, Sahadeva, the lord among men, completed that rite. (2-36-12)
तस्मिन्नभ्यर्चिते कृष्णे सुनीथः शत्रुकर्षणः। अतिताम्रेक्षणः कोपादुवाच मनुजाधिपान् ॥२-३६-१३॥
tasminn abhyarcite kṛṣṇe sunīthaḥ śatrukarṣaṇaḥ। atitāmekṣaṇaḥ kopād uvāca manujādhipān ॥2-36-13॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; अभ्यर्चिते (abhyarcite) - having been worshipped; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - Kṛṣṇa; सुनीथः (sunīthaḥ) - Sunītha; शत्रुकर्षणः (śatrukarṣaṇaḥ) - destroyer of enemies; अतिताम्रेक्षणः (atitāmekṣaṇaḥ) - with very red eyes; कोपात् (kopāt) - from anger; उवाच (uvāca) - said; मनुजाधिपान् (manujādhipān) - kings of men;]
(In that (assembly), when Kṛṣṇa had been worshipped, Sunītha, the destroyer of enemies, with very red eyes from anger, spoke to the kings of men.)
When Kṛṣṇa had been worshipped in that assembly, Sunītha, the destroyer of enemies, his eyes blazing red with anger, addressed the kings of men. (2-36-13)
स्थितः सेनापतिर्वोऽहं मन्यध्वं किं नु साम्प्रतम्। युधि तिष्ठाम संनह्य समेतान्वृष्णिपाण्डवान् ॥२-३६-१४॥
sthitaḥ senāpatir vo'haṃ manyadhvaṃ kiṃ nu sāmpratam। yudhi tiṣṭhāma saṃnahya sametān vṛṣṇipāṇḍavān ॥2-36-14॥
[स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; सेनापतिः (senāpatiḥ) - commander; वः (vaḥ) - your; अहम् (aham) - I; मन्यध्वम् (manyadhvam) - think; किम् (kim) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; साम्प्रतम् (sāmpratam) - at present; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; तिष्ठाम (tiṣṭhāma) - let us stand; संनह्य (saṃnahya) - having armed; समेतान् (sametān) - assembled; वृष्णिपाण्डवान् (vṛṣṇipāṇḍavān) - Vṛṣṇis and Pāṇḍavas;]
(Standing as your commander, I think, what indeed is the present (situation)? In battle, let us stand, having armed (ourselves), with the assembled Vṛṣṇis and Pāṇḍavas.)
