विभीषिकाभिर्बह्वीभिर्भीषयन्सर्वपार्थिवान्। न व्यपत्रपसे कस्माद्वृद्धः सन्कुलपांसनः ॥२-३८-१॥
vibhīṣikābhir bahvībhiḥ bhīṣayan sarva-pārthivān। na vyapatrapase kasmāt vṛddhaḥ san kulapāṁsanaḥ ॥2-38-1॥
[विभीषिकाभिः (vibhīṣikābhiḥ) - by terrors; बह्वीभिः (bahvībhiḥ) - by many; भीषयन् (bhīṣayan) - frightening; सर्वपार्थिवान् (sarva-pārthivān) - all kings; न (na) - not; व्यपत्रपसे (vyapatrapase) - you feel ashamed; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - old; सन् (san) - being; कुलपांसनः (kulapāṁsanaḥ) - disgrace of the family;]
(By terrors, by many, frightening all kings, not you feel ashamed, why, old, being, disgrace of the family.)
Being old and a disgrace to the family, why do you not feel ashamed, frightening all kings by many terrors? (2-38-1)
युक्तमेतत्तृतीयायां प्रकृतौ वर्तता त्वया। वक्तुं धर्मादपेतार्थं त्वं हि सर्वकुरूत्तमः ॥२-३८-२॥
yuktam etat tṛtīyāyāṃ prakṛtau vartatā tvayā। vaktuṃ dharmād apetārthaṃ tvaṃ hi sarvakurūttamaḥ ॥2-38-2॥

This is proper in the third context as you are acting; to speak something devoid of dharma is not fitting for you, for you are indeed the foremost among all Kurus. (2-38-2)
नावि नौरिव सम्बद्धा यथान्धो वान्धमन्वियात्। तथाभूता हि कौरव्या भीष्म येषां त्वमग्रणीः ॥२-३८-३॥

[नावि (nāvi) - in a boat; नौः (nauḥ) - a boat; इव (iva) - like; सम्बद्धा (sambaddhā) - bound together; यथा (yathā) - just as; अन्धः (andhaḥ) - a blind man; वा (vā) - or; अन्धम् (andham) - another blind man; अन्वियात् (anviyāt) - would follow; तथा (tathā) - so; अभूता (abhūtā) - have become; हि (hi) - indeed; कौरव्या (kauravyāḥ) - the Kauravas; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhishma; येषां (yeṣām) - of whom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अग्रणीः (agraṇīḥ) - are the leader;]
(In a boat, a boat as if bound together, just as a blind man or another blind man would follow; so have become indeed the Kauravas, O Bhishma, of whom you are the leader.)
Just as in a boat, one boat bound to another, a blind man would follow another blind man; so too, O Bhishma, the Kauravas have become, of whom you are the leader. (2-38-3)
पूतनाघातपूर्वाणि कर्माण्यस्य विशेषतः। त्वया कीर्तयतास्माकं भूयः प्रच्यावितं मनः ॥२-३८-४॥
pūtanāghātapūrvāṇi karmāṇyasya viśeṣataḥ। tvayā kīrtayatāsmākaṃ bhūyaḥ pracyāvitaṃ manaḥ ॥2-38-4॥

(The actions of him, especially those preceded by the slaying of Pūtanā, being recited by you, our mind is again displaced.)
When you recount his deeds, especially those beginning with the slaying of Pūtanā, our minds are once again unsettled. (2-38-4)
अवलिप्तस्य मूर्खस्य केशवं स्तोतुमिच्छतः। कथं भीष्म न ते जिह्वा शतधेयं विदीर्यते ॥२-३८-५॥
avaliptasya mūrkhasya keśavaṃ stotum icchataḥ। kathaṃ bhīṣma na te jihvā śatadheyaṃ vidīryate ॥2-38-5॥

(Of the arrogant fool desiring to praise Keśava, how, O Bhīṣma, is your tongue not split into a hundred pieces?)
O Bhīṣma, how is it that your tongue is not split into a hundred pieces when an arrogant fool desires to praise Keśava? (2-38-5)
यत्र कुत्सा प्रयोक्तव्या भीष्म बालतरैर्नरैः। तमिमं ज्ञानवृद्धः सन्गोपं संस्तोतुमिच्छसि ॥२-३८-६॥
yatra kutsā prayoktavyā bhīṣma bālatarair naraiḥ। tam imaṃ jñānavṛddhaḥ san gopaṃ saṃstotum icchasi॥2-38-6॥

यद्यनेन हता बाल्ये शकुनिश्चित्रमत्र किम्। तौ वाश्ववृषभौ भीष्म यौ न युद्धविशारदौ ॥२-३८-७॥
yadyanena hatā bālye śakuniś citram atra kim। tau vāśvavṛṣabhau bhīṣma yau na yuddhaviśāradau ॥2-38-7॥

(If by this (person) killed in childhood Śakuni and here what? Those two or the horse and the bull, Bhīṣma, who not skilled in battle. (2-38-7))
If Śakuni was killed in childhood by this person, then what is strange here? Or those two, the horse and the bull, Bhīṣma—are they not skilled in battle? (2-38-7)
चेतनारहितं काष्ठं यद्यनेन निपातितम्। पादेन शकटं भीष्म तत्र किं कृतमद्भुतम् ॥२-३८-८॥
cetanārahitaṃ kāṣṭhaṃ yady anena nipātitam। pādena śakaṭaṃ bhīṣma tatra kiṃ kṛtam adbhutam ॥2-38-8॥
[चेतनारहितं (cetanārahitaṃ) - devoid of consciousness; काष्ठं (kāṣṭham) - wood; यदि (yadi) - if; अनेन (anena) - by this; निपातितम् (nipātitam) - caused to fall; पादेन (pādena) - by the foot; शकटं (śakaṭam) - cart; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhishma; तत्र (tatra) - there; किं (kiṃ) - what; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful;]
(Devoid of consciousness wood if by this (person) was caused to fall, by the foot the cart, O Bhishma, there what was done wonderful?)
O Bhishma, if this unconscious wood was knocked down by the foot, what is so wonderful done there with the cart? (2-38-8)
वल्मीकमात्रः सप्ताहं यद्यनेन धृतोऽचलः। तदा गोवर्धनो भीष्म न तच्चित्रं मतं मम ॥२-३८-९॥
valmīkamātraḥ saptāhaṃ yadyanena dhṛto'calaḥ। tadā govardhano bhīṣma na taccitraṃ mataṃ mama ॥2-38-9॥
[वल्मीकमात्रः (valmīkamātraḥ) - of the size of an anthill; सप्ताहम् (saptāham) - for a week; यदि (yadi) - if; अनेन (anena) - by him; धृतः (dhṛtaḥ) - held; अचलः (acalaḥ) - mountain; तदा (tadā) - then; गोवर्धनः (govardhanaḥ) - Govardhana (mountain); भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhīṣma; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; चित्रम् (citraṃ) - wonder; मतम् (matam) - considered; मम (mama) - by me;]
(If a mountain of the size of an anthill was held by him for a week, then, O Bhīṣma, Govardhana is not considered a wonder by me.)
O Bhīṣma, if he held a mountain the size of an anthill for a week, then I do not consider Govardhana to be a wonder. (2-38-9)
भुक्तमेतेन बह्वन्नं क्रीडता नगमूर्धनि। इति ते भीष्म शृण्वानाः परं विस्मयमागताः ॥२-३८-१०॥
bhuktametena bahvannaṃ krīḍatā nagamūrdhani। iti te bhīṣma śṛṇvānāḥ paraṃ vismayamāgatāḥ ॥2-38-10॥
[भुक्तम् (bhuktam) - eaten; एतेन (etena) - by this; बहु-अन्नम् (bahu-annam) - much food; क्रीडता (krīḍatā) - while playing; नग-मूर्धनि (naga-mūrdhani) - on the mountain top; इति (iti) - thus; ते (te) - they; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhīṣma; शृण्वानाः (śṛṇvānāḥ) - hearing; परम् (param) - great; विस्मयम्-आगताः (vismayam-āgatāḥ) - astonishment-attained;]
(Eaten by this one much food while playing on the mountain top—thus, they, O Bhīṣma, hearing, great astonishment attained.)
O Bhīṣma, hearing that this one had eaten much food while playing on the mountain top, they were greatly astonished. (2-38-10)
यस्य चानेन धर्मज्ञ भुक्तमन्नं बलीयसः। स चानेन हतः कंस इत्येतन्न महाद्भुतम् ॥२-३८-११॥
yasya cānena dharmajña bhuktamannaṃ balīyasaḥ। sa cānena hataḥ kaṃsa ity etan na mahādbhutam ॥2-38-11॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; च (ca) - and; अनेन (anena) - by this one; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; भुक्तम् (bhuktam) - eaten; अन्नम् (annam) - food; बलीयसः (balīyasaḥ) - of the stronger; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; अनेन (anena) - by this one; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; कंसः (kaṃsaḥ) - Kaṃsa; इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; न (na) - not; महाद्भुतम् (mahādbhutam) - very wonderful;]
(Of whom, and by this knower of dharma, the food of the stronger was eaten; he, and by this one, Kaṃsa was killed; thus, this is not very wonderful.)
It is not at all surprising that the one whose food was eaten by this knower of dharma, and who was stronger, was also killed by him; thus, the slaying of Kaṃsa by him is not very wonderful. (2-38-11)
न ते श्रुतमिदं भीष्म नूनं कथयतां सताम्। यद्वक्ष्ये त्वामधर्मज्ञ वाक्यं कुरुकुलाधम ॥२-३८-१२॥
na te śrutam idaṃ bhīṣma nūnaṃ kathayatāṃ satām। yad vakṣye tvām adharmajña vākyaṃ kurukulādham ॥2-38-12॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - to you; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; इदं (idaṃ) - this; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhīṣma; नूनं (nūnam) - certainly; कथयताम् (kathayatām) - of those who speak; सताम् (satām) - of the virtuous; यत् (yat) - which; वक्ष्ये (vakṣye) - I shall say; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; अधर्मज्ञ (adharmajña) - knower of unrighteousness; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - word; कुरुकुलाधम (kurukulādhama) - O lowest of the Kuru dynasty;]
(Not to you has this, O Bhīṣma, certainly been heard from the virtuous speakers; which I shall say to you, O knower of unrighteousness, word, O lowest of the Kuru dynasty.)
O Bhīṣma, you have certainly not heard this from the virtuous; what I am about to say to you, O knower of unrighteousness, O lowest of the Kuru dynasty, is unprecedented. (2-38-12)
स्त्रीषु गोषु न शस्त्राणि पातयेद्ब्राह्मणेषु च। यस्य चान्नानि भुञ्जीत यश्च स्याच्छरणागतः ॥२-३८-१३॥
strīṣu goṣu na śastrāṇi pātayed brāhmaṇeṣu ca। yasya ca annāni bhuñjīta yaś ca syāt śaraṇāgataḥ ॥2-38-13॥
[स्त्रीषु (strīṣu) - among women; गोषु (goṣu) - among cows; न (na) - not; शस्त्राणि (śastrāṇi) - weapons; पातयेत् (pātayet) - should cause to fall; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - among Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; यस्य (yasya) - whose; च (ca) - and; अन्नानि (annāni) - food; भुञ्जीत (bhuñjīta) - one should eat; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; शरणागतः (śaraṇāgataḥ) - one who has taken refuge;]
(Among women, among cows, and among Brāhmaṇas, one should not cause weapons to fall; one should eat the food of him whose food it is, and of him who has taken refuge.)
Weapons should not be used against women, cows, or Brāhmaṇas; one should eat the food of those whose food it is, and of those who have sought refuge. (2-38-13)
इति सन्तोऽनुशासन्ति सज्जना धर्मिणः सदा। भीष्म लोके हि तत्सर्वं वितथं त्वयि दृश्यते ॥२-३८-१४॥
iti santo'nuśāsanti sajjanā dharmiṇaḥ sadā। bhīṣma loke hi tatsarvaṃ vitathaṃ tvayi dṛśyate ॥2-38-14॥

(Thus the good instruct, the noble righteous always. O Bhīṣma, in the world, indeed, all that is seen as false in you.)
Thus, the good and noble always instruct the righteous. But, O Bhīṣma, in this world, all that is seen in you appears false. (2-38-14)
ज्ञानवृद्धं च वृद्धं च भूयांसं केशवं मम। अजानत इवाख्यासि संस्तुवन्कुरुसत्तम ॥ गोघ्नः स्त्रीघ्नश्च सन्भीष्म कथं संस्तवमर्हति ॥२-३८-१५॥
jñānavṛddhaṃ ca vṛddhaṃ ca bhūyāṃsaṃ keśavaṃ mama। ajānata ivākhyāsi saṃstuvankurusattama॥ goghnaḥ strīghnaśca sanbhīṣma kathaṃ saṃstavamarhati॥2-38-15॥

असौ मतिमतां श्रेष्ठो य एष जगतः प्रभुः। सम्भावयति यद्येवं त्वद्वाक्याच्च जनार्दनः ॥ एवमेतत्सर्वमिति सर्वं तद्वितथं ध्रुवम् ॥२-३८-१६॥
asau matimatāṃ śreṣṭho ya eṣa jagataḥ prabhuḥ। sambhāvayati yady evaṃ tvad-vākyāc ca janārdanaḥ ॥ evam etat sarvam iti sarvaṃ tad vitathaṃ dhruvam ॥2-38-16॥
[असौ (asau) - that; मतिमतां (matimatām) - of the intelligent; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; यः (yaḥ) - who; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; सम्भावयति (sambhāvayati) - considers; यदि (yadi) - if; एवम् (evam) - thus; त्वत् (tvat) - your; वाक्यात् (vākyāt) - from the statement; च (ca) - and; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana; एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; इति (iti) - thus; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; तत् (tat) - that; वितथम् (vitatham) - false; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certain;]

न गाथा गाथिनं शास्ति बहु चेदपि गायति। प्रकृतिं यान्ति भूतानि भूलिङ्गशकुनिर्यथा ॥२-३८-१७॥
na gāthā gāthinaṃ śāsti bahu ced api gāyati। prakṛtiṃ yānti bhūtāni bhūliṅgaśakunir yathā ॥2-38-17॥

ko hi dharmiṇam ātmānaṃ jānan jñānavatāṃ varaḥ। kuryād yathā tvayā bhīṣma kṛtaṃ dharmam avekṣatā ॥2-38-20॥

(Who indeed, knowing the self to be righteous, O best of the wise, would act as you have done, O Bhishma, performing duty with consideration?)
O Bhishma, who among the wise, knowing himself to be righteous, would act as you have done, performing duty with such careful consideration? (2-38-20)
अन्यकामा हि धर्मज्ञ कन्यका प्राज्ञमानिना। अम्बा नामेति भद्रं ते कथं सापहृता त्वया ॥२-३८-२१॥
anyakāmā hi dharmajña kanyakā prājñamāninā। ambā nāmeti bhadraṃ te kathaṃ sāpahṛtā tvayā ॥2-38-21॥

(Desiring another indeed, the maiden who knows dharma, by one considering himself wise, Ambā by name, thus, welfare to you, how was she taken away by you?)
Ambā, who desired another and was knowledgeable in dharma, was taken away by you, who considered yourself wise. How did this happen? May you fare well. (2-38-21)
यां त्वयापहृतां भीष्म कन्यां नैषितवान्नृपः। भ्राता विचित्रवीर्यस्ते सतां वृत्तमनुष्ठितः ॥२-३८-२२॥
yāṃ tvayāpahṛtāṃ bhīṣma kanyāṃ naiṣitavānnṛpaḥ। bhrātā vicitravīryaste satāṃ vṛttamanuṣṭhitaḥ ॥2-38-22॥

दारयोर्यस्य चान्येन मिषतः प्राज्ञमानिनः। तव जातान्यपत्यानि सज्जनाचरिते पथि ॥२-३८-२३॥

Your children, born of your two wives, in the presence of another who considers himself wise, have been set on the path practiced by the virtuous. (2-38-23)
न हि धर्मोऽस्ति ते भीष्म ब्रह्मचर्यमिदं वृथा। यद्धारयसि मोहाद्वा क्लीबत्वाद्वा न संशयः ॥२-३८-२४॥
na hi dharmo'sti te bhīṣma brahmacaryam idaṃ vṛthā। yad dhārayasi mohād vā klībatvād vā na saṃśayaḥ॥2-38-24॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; अस्ति (asti) - is; ते (te) - for you; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhishma; ब्रह्मचर्यम् (brahmacaryam) - celibacy; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; यत् (yat) - which; धारयसि (dhārayasi) - you maintain; मोहात् (mohāt) - out of delusion; वा (vā) - or; क्लीबत्वात् (klībatvāt) - out of impotence; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Not indeed is righteousness for you, O Bhishma, this celibacy in vain; which you maintain out of delusion or out of impotence or, there is no doubt.)
O Bhishma, this celibacy you maintain is not truly righteousness, for it is in vain—whether you uphold it out of delusion or impotence, there is no doubt about it. (2-38-24)
न त्वहं तव धर्मज्ञ पश्याम्युपचयं क्वचित्। न हि ते सेविता वृद्धा य एवं धर्ममब्रुवन् ॥२-३८-२५॥
na tvahaṃ tava dharmajña paśyāmyupacayaṃ kvacit। na hi te sevitā vṛddhā ya evaṃ dharmam abruvan ॥2-38-25॥
[न (na) - not; त्व (tva) - your; अहम् (aham) - I; तव (tava) - your; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; उपचयम् (upacayam) - increase; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your; सेविता (sevitā) - served; वृद्धा (vṛddhā) - elders; य (ya) - who; एवम् (evam) - thus; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - spoke;]
(Not your, O knower of dharma, do I see any increase anywhere. Indeed, your elders who spoke dharma thus were not served.)
O knower of dharma, I do not see any increase of your (virtue) anywhere. Indeed, your elders who spoke thus about dharma were not served by you. (2-38-25)
इष्टं दत्तमधीतं च यज्ञाश्च बहुदक्षिणाः। सर्वमेतदपत्यस्य कलां नार्हति षोडशीम् ॥२-३८-२६॥
iṣṭaṃ dattam adhītaṃ ca yajñāś ca bahudakṣiṇāḥ। sarvam etad apatyasya kalāṃ nārhati ṣoḍaśīm ॥2-38-26॥
[इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - sacrificed; offered; desired; performed; (that which is iṣṭa); दत्तम् (dattam) - given; bestowed; donated; अधीतम् (adhītam) - studied; learned; recited; च (ca) - and; यज्ञाः (yajñāḥ) - sacrifices; rituals; च (ca) - and; बहुदक्षिणाः (bahudakṣiṇāḥ) - with many gifts; with much dakṣiṇā; richly endowed; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; एतत् (etat) - this; अपत्यस्य (apatyasya) - of the son; of the offspring; कलाम् (kalām) - a sixteenth part; fraction; portion; न (na) - not; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; is worthy of; षोडशीम् (ṣoḍaśīm) - sixteenth; (the) sixteenth part;]
(Sacrificed, given, studied, and sacrifices with many gifts—all this does not deserve even a sixteenth part of the son.)
All that has been sacrificed, given, studied, and all the sacrifices performed with many gifts—none of this is worthy of even a sixteenth part of a son. (2-38-26)
व्रतोपवासैर्बहुभिः कृतं भवति भीष्म यत्। सर्वं तदनपत्यस्य मोघं भवति निश्चयात् ॥२-३८-२७॥
vratopavāsair bahubhiḥ kṛtaṃ bhavati bhīṣma yat। sarvaṃ tad anapatyasya moghaṃ bhavati niścayāt ॥2-38-27॥
[व्रत-उपवासैः (vrata-upavāsaiḥ) - by vows and fasts; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - by many; कृतं (kṛtam) - performed; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhīṣma; यत् (yat) - which; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; तत् (tat) - that; अनपत्यस्य (anapatyasya) - of one without offspring; मोग्हं (moghaṃ) - fruitless; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; निश्चयात् (niścayāt) - certainly;]
(Whatever is performed by many vows and fasts, O Bhīṣma, all that certainly becomes fruitless for one without offspring.)
O Bhīṣma, whatever is performed by many vows and fasts, all of that certainly becomes fruitless for one who has no offspring. (2-38-27)
सोऽनपत्यश्च वृद्धश्च मिथ्याधर्मानुशासनात्। हंसवत्त्वमपीदानीं ज्ञातिभ्यः प्राप्नुया वधम् ॥२-३८-२८॥
so'napatyaś ca vṛddhaś ca mithyā-dharmānuśāsanāt। haṃsavat tvam apīdānīṃ jñātibhyaḥ prāpnuyā vadham ॥2-38-28॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अनपत्यः (anapatyaḥ) - without offspring; च (ca) - and; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - old; च (ca) - and; मिथ्या (mithyā) - false; धर्म (dharma) - righteousness; अनुशासनात् (anuśāsanāt) - from instruction; हंसवत् (haṃsavat) - like a swan; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; इदानीं (idānīṃ) - now; ज्ञातिभ्यः (jñātibhyaḥ) - from kinsmen; प्राप्नुयाः (prāpnuyāḥ) - may obtain; वधम् (vadham) - death;]
(He, without offspring and old, due to false instruction on righteousness, like a swan, you also now may obtain death from your kinsmen.)
He, being childless and aged, because of false instruction on righteousness, like a swan, you too may now meet your death at the hands of your kinsmen. (2-38-28)
एवं हि कथयन्त्यन्ये नरा ज्ञानविदः पुरा। भीष्म यत्तदहं सम्यग्वक्ष्यामि तव शृण्वतः ॥२-३८-२९॥
evaṃ hi kathayanty anye narā jñānavidaḥ purā। bhīṣma yat tad ahaṃ samyag vakṣyāmi tava śṛṇvataḥ ॥2-38-29॥

(Thus indeed others, men who are knowers of knowledge, formerly narrated. Bhīṣma, that which I shall properly speak to you listening.)
Thus, as others—men who are knowers of knowledge—have narrated in former times, O Bhīṣma, that which I shall properly explain to you as you listen.
वृद्धः किल समुद्रान्ते कश्चिद्धंसोऽभवत्पुरा। धर्मवागन्यथावृत्तः पक्षिणः सोऽनुशास्ति ह ॥२-३८-३०॥
vṛddhaḥ kila samudrānte kaścid dhaṃso 'bhavat purā। dharmavāg anyathāvṛttaḥ pakṣiṇaḥ so 'nuśāsti ha ॥2-38-30॥
[वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - aged; किल (kila) - indeed; समुद्रान्ते (samudrānte) - at the edge of the ocean; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; हंसः (haṃsaḥ) - swan; अभवत् (abhavat) - was; पुरा (purā) - formerly; धर्मवाक् (dharmavāk) - speaking righteousness; अन्यथा-वृत्तः (anyathā-vṛttaḥ) - behaving otherwise; पक्षिणः (pakṣiṇaḥ) - to the birds; सः (saḥ) - he; अनुशास्ति (anuśāsti) - instructs; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Aged indeed at the edge of the ocean some swan was formerly; speaking righteousness, behaving otherwise, to the birds he instructs indeed.)
Once, there was an old swan at the edge of the ocean; though he spoke of righteousness, he acted otherwise, and he used to instruct the other birds. (2-38-30)
धर्मं चरत माधर्ममिति तस्य वचः किल। पक्षिणः शुश्रुवुर्भीष्म सततं धर्मवादिनः ॥२-३८-३१॥
dharmaṃ carata mādharmam iti tasya vacaḥ kila। pakṣiṇaḥ śuśruvur bhīṣma satataṃ dharmavādinaḥ ॥2-38-31॥
[धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - duty; चरत (carata) - practice; मा (mā) - do not; अधर्मम् (adharmam) - unrighteousness; इति (iti) - thus; तस्य (tasya) - his; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; किल (kila) - indeed; पक्षिणः (pakṣiṇaḥ) - birds; शुश्रुवुः (śuśruvuḥ) - heard; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; सततम् (satatam) - always; धर्मवादिनः (dharmavādinaḥ) - speakers of righteousness;]
(Practice duty, do not (practice) unrighteousness—thus his speech indeed; the birds heard, O Bhishma, always (from) speakers of righteousness.)
"Practice righteousness, not unrighteousness"—such was his statement, O Bhishma, which the birds, always devoted to righteousness, heard. (2-38-31)
अथास्य भक्ष्यमाजह्रुः समुद्रजलचारिणः। अण्डजा भीष्म तस्यान्ये धर्मार्थमिति शुश्रुम ॥२-३८-३२॥
athāsya bhakṣyam ājahruḥ samudra-jala-cāriṇaḥ। aṇḍajā bhīṣma tasyānye dharmārtham iti śuśruma ॥2-38-32॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अस्य (asya) - his; भक्ष्यम् (bhakṣyam) - food; आजह्रुः (ājahruḥ) - brought; समुद्रजलचारिणः (samudra-jala-cāriṇaḥ) - those who move in the ocean and water; अण्डजाः (aṇḍajāḥ) - egg-born beings; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhīṣma; तस्य (tasya) - his; अन्ये (anye) - others; धर्मार्थम् (dharmārtham) - for the sake of dharma; इति (iti) - thus; शुश्रुम (śuśruma) - we have heard;]
(Then his food was brought by those who move in the ocean and water, the egg-born beings. O Bhīṣma, others of his (followers) also (brought food) for the sake of dharma, thus we have heard.)
Then, O Bhīṣma, those who move in the ocean and water, the egg-born beings, brought him food. Others also, for the sake of dharma, did likewise, as we have heard. (2-38-32)
तस्य चैव समभ्याशे निक्षिप्याण्डानि सर्वशः। समुद्राम्भस्यमोदन्त चरन्तो भीष्म पक्षिणः ॥२-३८-३३॥
tasya caiva samabhyāśe nikṣipyāṇḍāni sarvaśaḥ। samudrāmbhasyamodanta caranto bhīṣma pakṣiṇaḥ ॥2-38-33॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समभ्याशे (samabhyāśe) - in the proximity; निक्षिप्य (nikṣipya) - having placed; अण्डानि (aṇḍāni) - eggs; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; समुद्र-अम्भस्य (samudra-ambhasya) - of the ocean water; अमोदन्त (amodanta) - rejoiced; चरन्तः (carantaḥ) - moving about; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - fearsome; पक्षिणः (pakṣiṇaḥ) - birds;]
(Of him and indeed in the proximity, having placed eggs entirely, of the ocean water, rejoiced, moving about, fearsome birds.)
And near him, having placed all their eggs, the fearsome birds moved about rejoicing in the waters of the ocean. (2-38-33)
तेषामण्डानि सर्वेषां भक्षयामास पापकृत्। स हंसः सम्प्रमत्तानामप्रमत्तः स्वकर्मणि ॥२-३८-३४॥
teṣāmaṇḍāni sarveṣāṃ bhakṣayāmāsa pāpakṛt। sa haṃsaḥ sampramattānāmapramattaḥ svakarmaṇi ॥2-38-34॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अण्डानि (aṇḍāni) - eggs; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; भक्षयामास (bhakṣayāmāsa) - ate; पापकृत् (pāpakṛt) - evil-doer; सः (saḥ) - he; हंसः (haṃsaḥ) - swan; सम्प्रमत्तानाम् (sampramattānām) - of those who are careless; अप्रमत्तः (apramattaḥ) - not careless; स्वकर्मणि (svakarmaṇi) - in his own duty;]
(Of them, the eggs of all, the evil-doer ate. He, the swan, among those who are careless, was not careless in his own duty.)
The evil-doer ate all their eggs. The swan, unlike the careless ones, was attentive to his own duty. (2-38-34)
ततः प्रक्षीयमाणेषु तेष्वण्डेष्वण्डजोऽपरः। अशङ्कत महाप्राज्ञस्तं कदाचिद्ददर्श ह ॥२-३८-३५॥
tataḥ prakṣīyamāṇeṣu teṣvaṇḍeṣvaṇḍajo'paraḥ| aśaṅkata mahāprājñastaṃ kadācid dadarśa ha ॥2-38-35॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रक्षीयमाणेषु (prakṣīyamāṇeṣu) - being destroyed; तेषु (teṣu) - in those; अण्डेषु (aṇḍeṣu) - eggs; अण्डजः (aṇḍajaḥ) - egg-born; अपरः (aparaḥ) - another; अशङ्कत (aśaṅkata) - suspected; महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - the great wise one; तम् (tam) - him; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then, as those eggs were being destroyed, another egg-born (creature) suspected (something); the great wise one saw him at some time indeed.)

(Then he spoke, having seen the sin of the swan. Of them, extremely afflicted by sorrow, he, the bird, of all birds (said).)
Then, having seen the swan's wrongdoing, he, the bird who was most afflicted with sorrow among all the birds, spoke to them. (2-38-36)
ततः प्रत्यक्षतो दृष्ट्वा पक्षिणस्ते समागताः। निजघ्नुस्तं तदा हंसं मिथ्यावृत्तं कुरूद्वह ॥२-३८-३७॥
tataḥ pratyakṣato dṛṣṭvā pakṣiṇas te samāgatāḥ। nijaghnus taṃ tadā haṃsaṃ mithyāvṛttaṃ kurūdvaha ॥2-38-37॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रत्यक्षतः (pratyakṣataḥ) - directly; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पक्षिणः (pakṣiṇaḥ) - the birds; ते (te) - they; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled; निजघ्नुः (nijaghnuḥ) - killed; तम् (tam) - him; तदा (tadā) - then; हंसम् (haṃsam) - the swan; मिथ्यावृत्तम् (mithyāvṛttam) - acting falsely; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O best of the Kurus;]
(Then, having seen directly, the birds assembled; they killed him, the swan, acting falsely, O best of the Kurus.)
Then, O best of the Kurus, the birds, having seen the swan acting falsely, assembled together and killed him. (2-38-37)
ते त्वां हंससधर्माणमपीमे वसुधाधिपाः। निहन्युर्भीष्म सङ्क्रुद्धाः पक्षिणस्तमिवाण्डजम् ॥२-३८-३८॥
te tvāṃ haṃsasadharmāṇam apīme vasudhādhipāḥ। nihanyur bhīṣma saṅkruddhāḥ pakṣiṇas tam ivāṇḍajam ॥2-38-38॥
[ते (te) - they; त्वां (tvām) - you; हंससधर्माणम् (haṃsasadharmāṇam) - having the same nature as a swan; अपि (api) - even; इमे (ime) - these; वसुधाधिपाः (vasudhādhipāḥ) - lords of the earth; निहन्युḥ (nihanyuḥ) - would slay; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhishma; सङ्क्रुद्धाः (saṅkruddhāḥ) - greatly enraged; पक्षिणः (pakṣiṇaḥ) - birds; तम् (tam) - him; इव (iva) - like; अण्डजम् (aṇḍajam) - the egg-born (bird);]
(They, O Bhishma, even these lords of the earth, greatly enraged, would slay you, who are of the same nature as a swan, like birds (would slay) that egg-born (bird).)
O Bhishma, even these kings of the earth, if greatly enraged, would slay you, who are as pure as a swan, just as birds would kill one of their own kind hatched from an egg. (2-38-38)
गाथामप्यत्र गायन्ति ये पुराणविदो जनाः। भीष्म यां तां च ते सम्यक्कथयिष्यामि भारत ॥२-३८-३९॥

अन्तरात्मनि विनिहिते; रौषि पत्ररथ वितथम्। अण्डभक्षणमशुचि ते; कर्म वाचमतिशयते ॥२-३८-४०॥

(In the inner self placed; O Rishi, the leaf-chariot is false. Egg-eating, impure is your action; it exceeds speech. (2-38-40))
When the inner self is established, O Rishi, the leaf-chariot is false. Eating eggs is impure; your action surpasses your words. (2-38-40)
