Pancharatra: Bhishma consoles Yudhisthira.

ततः सागरसङ्काशं दृष्ट्वा नृपतिसागरम्। रोषात्प्रचलितं सर्वमिदमाह युधिष्ठिरः ॥२-३७-१॥
tataḥ sāgarasaṅkāśaṃ dṛṣṭvā nṛpatisāgaram। roṣātpracalitaṃ sarvamidamāha yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥2-37-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सागर-सङ्काशम् (sāgara-saṅkāśam) - ocean-like; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; नृपति-सागरम् (nṛpati-sāgaram) - king-ocean; रोषात् (roṣāt) - from anger; प्रचलितम् (pracalitam) - agitated; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; इदम् (idam) - this; आह (āha) - said; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(Then, having seen the king-ocean, ocean-like, all this being agitated from anger, Yudhishthira said this.)
Then, seeing the king, vast as the ocean, and all this being agitated with anger, Yudhishthira spoke as follows. (2-37-1)
भीष्मं मतिमतां श्रेष्ठं वृद्धं कुरुपितामहम्। बृहस्पतिं बृहत्तेजाः पुरुहूत इवारिहा ॥२-३७-२॥
bhīṣmaṃ matimatāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ vṛddhaṃ kurupitāmaham। bṛhaspatiṃ bṛhattejāḥ puruhūta ivārihā ॥2-37-2॥
[भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhīṣma; मतिमताम् (matimatām) - of the intelligent ones; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - the best; वृद्धम् (vṛddham) - aged; कुरुपितामहम् (kurupitāmaham) - the grandsire of the Kurus; बृहस्पतिम् (bṛhaspatim) - Bṛhaspati; बृहत्तेजाः (bṛhattejāḥ) - of great energy; पुरुहूतः (puruhūtaḥ) - Indra; इव (iva) - like; अरिहा (arihā) - destroyer of enemies;]
(Bhīṣma, the best of the intelligent, the aged, the grandsire of the Kurus; Bṛhaspati, of great energy, like Indra, the destroyer of enemies.)

असौ रोषात्प्रचलितो महान्नृपतिसागरः। अत्र यत्प्रतिपत्तव्यं तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥२-३७-३॥
asau roṣātpracalito mahānnṛpatisāgaraḥ। atra yatpratipattavyaṃ tanme brūhi pitāmaha ॥2-37-3॥
[असौ (asau) - that; रोषात् (roṣāt) - from anger; प्रचलितः (pracalitaḥ) - moved; महान् (mahān) - great; नृपति-सागरः (nṛpati-sāgaraḥ) - king-ocean; अत्र (atra) - here; यत् (yat) - what; प्रतिपत्तव्यम् (pratipattavyam) - should be done; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; पितामह (pitāmaha) - grandfather;]
(That king-ocean, great, moved from anger. Here, what should be done, that to me tell, grandfather.)
That great king, like an ocean, has been moved by anger. Grandfather, tell me here what should be done. (2-37-3)
यज्ञस्य च न विघ्नः स्यात्प्रजानां च शिवं भवेत्। यथा सर्वत्र तत्सर्वं ब्रूहि मेऽद्य पितामह ॥२-३७-४॥
yajñasya ca na vighnaḥ syāt prajānāṃ ca śivaṃ bhavet। yathā sarvatra tat sarvaṃ brūhi me'dya pitāmaha ॥2-37-4॥
[यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of sacrifice; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; विघ्नः (vighnaḥ) - obstacle; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; प्रजानाम् (prajānām) - of beings; च (ca) - and; शिवम् (śivam) - auspiciousness; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; यथा (yathā) - as; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; मे (me) - to me; अद्य (adya) - today; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire;]
(Of sacrifice and not obstacle should be; of beings and auspiciousness should be; as everywhere that all tell to me today O grandsire.)
There should be no obstacle to sacrifice, and there should be auspiciousness for all beings. As it is everywhere, tell me all that today, O grandsire. (2-37-4)
इत्युक्तवति धर्मज्ञे धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे। उवाचेदं वचो भीष्मस्ततः कुरुपितामहः ॥२-३७-५॥
ity-uktavati dharma-jñe dharma-rāje yudhiṣṭhire। uvāca idaṃ vacaḥ bhīṣmaḥ tataḥ kuru-pitāmahaḥ ॥2-37-5॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तवति (uktavati) - having spoken; धर्मज्ञे (dharma-jñe) - knower of dharma; धर्मराजे (dharma-rāje) - king of dharma; युधिष्ठिरे (yudhiṣṭhire) - Yudhishthira; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कुरुपितामहः (kuru-pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire of the Kurus;]
(Thus, when the knower of dharma, the king of dharma, Yudhishthira, had spoken, Bhishma, the grandsire of the Kurus, then said this speech.)
When Yudhishthira, the righteous king, had spoken thus, Bhishma, the grandsire of the Kurus, then spoke these words. (2-37-5)
मा भैस्त्वं कुरुशार्दूल श्वा सिंहं हन्तुमर्हति। शिवः पन्थाः सुनीतोऽत्र मया पूर्वतरं वृतः ॥२-३७-६॥
mā bhais tvaṃ kuruśārdūla śvā siṃhaṃ hantum arhati। śivaḥ panthāḥ sunīto'tra mayā pūrvataraṃ vṛtaḥ ॥2-37-6॥
[मा (mā) - do not; भैः (bhais) - fear; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; कुरुशार्दूल (kuruśārdūla) - O tiger among Kurus; श्वा (śvā) - a dog; सिंहं (siṃham) - lion; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to kill; अर्हति (arhati) - is able; शिवः (śivaḥ) - auspicious; पन्थाः (panthāḥ) - path; सुनीतः (sunītaḥ) - well-guided; अत्र (atra) - here; मया (mayā) - by me; पूर्वतरम् (pūrvataram) - earlier; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen;]
(Do not fear, you O tiger among Kurus; a dog is not able to kill a lion. The auspicious, well-guided path here was chosen earlier by me.)
Do not be afraid, O best of the Kurus; just as a dog cannot kill a lion, the auspicious and well-guided path has already been chosen by me here. (2-37-6)
प्रसुप्ते हि यथा सिंहे श्वानस्तत्र समागताः। भषेयुः सहिताः सर्वे तथेमे वसुधाधिपाः ॥२-३७-७॥
prasupte hi yathā siṃhe śvānas tatra samāgatāḥ। bhaṣeyuḥ sahitāḥ sarve tatheme vasudhādhipāḥ ॥2-37-7॥
[प्रसुप्ते (prasupte) - when sleeping; (prasupte = pra + supta, pra- intensifier, supta- slept) हि (hi) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - just as; सिंहे (siṃhe) - on the lion; (siṃha- lion, locative singular) श्वानः (śvānaḥ) - dogs; तत्र (tatra) - there; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled; (samāgata = sam + āgata, sam- together, āgata- come) भषेयुः (bhaṣeyuḥ) - would bark; (bhaṣ- to bark, optative plural) सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; (sahita- united, plural) सर्वे (sarve) - all; तथा (tathā) - so; thus; इमे (ime) - these; वसुधाधिपाः (vasudhādhipāḥ) - lords of the earth; (vasudhā- earth, adhipa- lord, plural);]
(When the lion is indeed asleep, just as dogs assembled there would all bark together, so do these lords of the earth.)
Just as, when the lion is asleep, all the dogs gathered there bark together, so do these kings of the earth. (2-37-7)
वृष्णिसिंहस्य सुप्तस्य तथेमे प्रमुखे स्थिताः। भषन्ते तात सङ्क्रुद्धाः श्वानः सिंहस्य संनिधौ ॥२-३७-८॥
vṛṣṇisiṃhasya suptasya tatheme pramukhe sthitāḥ। bhaṣante tāta saṅkruddhāḥ śvānaḥ siṃhasya saṃnidhau ॥2-37-8॥
[वृष्णिसिंहस्य (vṛṣṇisiṃhasya) - of the bull-lion; (vṛṣṇi - bull; siṃha - lion; sya - of;) सुप्तस्य (suptasya) - of the sleeping; (supta - sleeping; sya - of;) तथा (tathā) - thus; (tathā - thus;) इमे (ime) - these; (ime - these;) प्रमुखे (pramukhe) - in the presence; (pra - forth; mukhe - in the face/presence;) स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - standing; (sthitāḥ - standing;) भषन्ते (bhaṣante) - bark; (bhaṣ - to bark; ante - they;) तात (tāta) - O dear; (tāta - O dear;) सङ्क्रुद्धाः (saṅkruddhāḥ) - enraged; (sam - completely; kruddhāḥ - angry;) श्वानः (śvānaḥ) - dogs; (śvānaḥ - dogs;) सिंहस्य (siṃhasya) - of the lion; (siṃha - lion; sya - of;) संनिधौ (saṃnidhau) - in the presence; (sam - together; nidhau - in the presence; );]
(Of the bull-lion, of the sleeping, thus these in the presence standing, bark, O dear, enraged, dogs, of the lion, in the presence.)
O dear, while the bull-lion sleeps, these dogs, enraged, stand in front and bark in the very presence of the lion. (2-37-8)
न हि सम्बुध्यते तावत्सुप्तः सिंह इवाच्युतः। तेन सिंहीकरोत्येतान्नृसिंहश्चेदिपुङ्गवः ॥२-३७-९॥
na hi sambudhyate tāvat suptaḥ siṃha iva acyutaḥ। tena siṃhīkaroti etān nṛsiṃhaḥ ca edipuṅgavaḥ ॥2-37-9॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; सम्बुध्यते (sambudhyate) - is awakened; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; सुप्तः (suptaḥ) - asleep; सिंहः (siṃhaḥ) - lion; इव (iva) - like; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - Acyuta (the infallible one, Kṛṣṇa); तेन (tena) - by him; सिंहीकरोति (siṃhīkaroti) - makes lion-like; एतान् (etān) - these; नृसिंहः (nṛsiṃhaḥ) - Nṛsiṃha (man-lion); च (ca) - and; चेदिपुङ्गवः (cedipuṅgavaḥ) - the chief of the Cedis (Śiśupāla);]
(Not indeed is awakened so long as asleep the lion, like Acyuta. By him, makes lion-like these, Nṛsiṃha and the chief of the Cedis.)
Just as a lion does not awaken while asleep, so too does Acyuta remain unmoved. But by him, Nṛsiṃha and the chief of the Cedis are made lion-like. (2-37-9)
पार्थिवान्पार्थिवश्रेष्ठ शिशुपालोऽल्पचेतनः। सर्वान्सर्वात्मना तात नेतुकामो यमक्षयम् ॥२-३७-१०॥
pārthivān pārthivaśreṣṭha śiśupālo'lpacetanaḥ। sarvān sarvātmanā tāta netukāmo yamakṣayam ॥2-37-10॥
[पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - kings; पार्थिवश्रेष्ठ (pārthivaśreṣṭha) - O best of kings; शिशुपालः (śiśupālaḥ) - Śiśupāla; अल्पचेतनः (alpacetanaḥ) - of little intelligence; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; सर्वात्मना (sarvātmanā) - with all his might; तात (tāta) - O dear one; नेतुकामः (netukāmaḥ) - desiring to lead; यमक्षयम् (yamakṣayam) - to the abode of Yama;]
(Śiśupāla, of little intelligence, O best of kings, desiring to lead all the kings, O dear one, with all his might, to the abode of Yama.)
O best of kings, Śiśupāla, who was of little intelligence, desired to lead all the kings, O dear one, with all his might, to the abode of Yama (death). (2-37-10)
नूनमेतत्समादातुं पुनरिच्छत्यधोक्षजः। यदस्य शिशुपालस्थं तेजस्तिष्ठति भारत ॥२-३७-११॥
nūnam etat samādātuṃ punar icchaty adhokṣajaḥ। yad asya śiśupālasthaṃ tejas tiṣṭhati bhārata ॥2-37-11॥
[नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; एतत् (etat) - this; समादातुम् (samādātum) - to take completely; पुनः (punar) - again; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; अधोक्षजः (adhokṣajaḥ) - the transcendent Lord; यत् (yat) - because; अस्य (asya) - his; शिशुपालस्थम् (śiśupālastham) - situated in Śiśupāla; तेजः (tejas) - energy; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Certainly this to take completely again desires the transcendent Lord; because his situated in Śiśupāla energy remains, O Bhārata (2-37-11))
Certainly, O Bhārata, the transcendent Lord desires to completely reclaim this, because the energy that is situated in Śiśupāla still remains. (2-37-11)
विप्लुता चास्य भद्रं ते बुद्धिर्बुद्धिमतां वर। चेदिराजस्य कौन्तेय सर्वेषां च महीक्षिताम् ॥२-३७-१२॥
viplutā cāsya bhadraṃ te buddhir buddhimatāṃ vara| cedirājasya kaunteya sarveṣāṃ ca mahīkṣitām ॥2-37-12॥
[विप्लुता (viplutā) - dispersed; dissolved; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - welfare; auspiciousness; ते (te) - to you; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; understanding; बुद्धिमताम् (buddhimatām) - of the wise; वर (vara) - best; chief; चेदिराजस्य (cedirājasya) - of the king of Cedi; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; सर्वेषां (sarveṣām) - of all; च (ca) - and; महीक्षिताम् (mahīkṣitām) - of the rulers of the earth;]
(Dispersed and his welfare to you, the intellect, O best of the wise, of the king of Cedi, O son of Kunti, and of all the rulers of the earth.)
O son of Kunti, the intellect of the king of Cedi and of all the rulers of the earth has been dispersed; welfare to you, O best among the wise. (2-37-12)
आदातुं हि नरव्याघ्रो यं यमिच्छत्ययं यदा। तस्य विप्लवते बुद्धिरेवं चेदिपतेर्यथा ॥२-३७-१३॥
ādātuṃ hi naravyāghro yaṃ yam icchaty ayaṃ yadā। tasya viplavate buddhir evaṃ cedipater yathā ॥2-37-13॥
[आदातुम् (ādātum) - to take; to seize; हि (hi) - indeed; for; नरव्याघ्रः (naravyāghraḥ) - tiger among men; hero; यम् (yam) - whom; यम् (yam) - whom; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; wishes; अयम् (ayam) - this (one); यदा (yadā) - when; तस्य (tasya) - his; विप्लवते (viplavate) - becomes agitated; is disturbed; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - mind; intellect; एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; च (ca) - and; एदिपतेः (cedipateḥ) - of the king of Cedi; यथा (yathā) - as; just as;]
(To seize indeed, the tiger among men, whom, whom this one desires, when, his mind becomes agitated, thus and of the king of Cedi, as.)
Whenever this tiger among men desires to seize someone, his mind becomes agitated, just as is the case with the king of Cedi. (2-37-13)
चतुर्विधानां भूतानां त्रिषु लोकेषु माधवः। प्रभवश्चैव सर्वेषां निधनं च युधिष्ठिर ॥२-३७-१४॥
caturvidhānāṃ bhūtānāṃ triṣu lokeṣu mādhavaḥ। prabhavaścaiva sarveṣāṃ nidhanaṃ ca yudhiṣṭhira ॥2-37-14॥
[चतुर्विधानां (caturvidhānāṃ) - of four kinds; भूतानां (bhūtānāṃ) - of beings; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; माधवः (mādhavaḥ) - Mādhava; प्रभवः (prabhavaḥ) - origin; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वेषां (sarveṣāṃ) - of all; निधनं (nidhanaṃ) - destruction; च (ca) - and; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Of the four kinds of beings in the three worlds, Mādhava is the origin and indeed the destruction of all, O Yudhiṣṭhira.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, Mādhava is both the origin and the end of all four kinds of beings in the three worlds. (2-37-14)
इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा ततश्चेदिपतिर्नृपः। भीष्मं रूक्षाक्षरा वाचः श्रावयामास भारत ॥२-३७-१५॥
iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā tataś cedipatir nṛpaḥ। bhīṣmaṃ rūkṣākṣarā vācaḥ śrāvayāmāsa bhārata ॥2-37-15॥
[इति (iti) - thus; तस्य (tasya) - his; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; ततः (tataḥ) - then; च (ca) - and; एदि-पतिः (edi-patiḥ) - the king of the Cedis; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - to Bhishma; रूक्ष-अक्षरा (rūkṣ-akṣarā) - harsh words; वाचः (vācaḥ) - speech; श्रावयामास (śrāvayāmāsa) - caused to be heard; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Thus, having heard his speech, then the king of the Cedis, the king, caused harsh words of speech to be heard to Bhishma, O Bhārata.)
