Pancharatra: Bhishma restrains enraged Bhima.

Shishupala said.
स मे बहुमतो राजा जरासन्धो महाबलः। योऽनेन युद्धं नेयेष दासोऽयमिति संयुगे ॥२-३९-१॥
sa me bahumato rājā jarāsandho mahābalaḥ। yo'nena yuddhaṃ neyeṣa dāso'yamiti saṃyuge ॥2-39-1॥
[स (sa) - he; मे (me) - to me; बहुमतः (bahumataḥ) - much-honored; राजा (rājā) - king; जरासन्धः (jarāsandhaḥ) - Jarāsandha; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - mighty; यः (yaḥ) - who; अनेन (anena) - by him; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; नेयेष (neyeṣa) - was not able to lead; दासः (dāsaḥ) - servant; अयम् (ayam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(He, the much-honored king Jarāsandha, mighty, who by him was not able to lead the battle, (is) this servant thus in battle.)
That mighty king Jarāsandha, who was greatly honored by me, and who could not be led into battle by him, is now his servant in battle. (2-39-1)
केशवेन कृतं यत्तु जरासन्धवधे तदा। भीमसेनार्जुनाभ्यां च कस्तत्साध्विति मन्यते ॥२-३९-२॥
keśavena kṛtaṃ yattu jarāsandhavadhe tadā। bhīmasenārjunābhyāṃ ca kastatsādhviti manyate ॥2-39-2॥

(By Keśava, that which was done in the killing of Jarāsandha then, by Bhīmasena and Arjuna also, who thinks that (to be) good thus?)
Who considers that which was done by Keśava at the time of Jarāsandha's killing, also by Bhīmasena and Arjuna, to be good? (2-39-2)
अद्वारेण प्रविष्टेन छद्मना ब्रह्मवादिना। दृष्टः प्रभावः कृष्णेन जरासन्धस्य धीमतः ॥२-३९-३॥
advāreṇa praviṣṭena chadmanā brahmavādinā। dṛṣṭaḥ prabhāvaḥ kṛṣṇena jarāsandhasya dhīmataḥ ॥2-39-3॥
[अद्वारेण (advāreṇa) - by a non-door; by a secret way; प्रविष्टेन (praviṣṭena) - having entered; छद्मना (chadmanā) - by disguise; by deception; ब्रह्मवादिना (brahmavādinā) - by the speaker of Brahman; by the one who speaks of the Absolute; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - was seen; was observed; प्रभावः (prabhāvaḥ) - power; influence; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; जरासन्धस्य (jarāsandhasya) - of Jarāsandha; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise; of the intelligent one;]
(By a non-door, having entered by disguise, by the speaker of Brahman, the power was seen by Kṛṣṇa of Jarāsandha, the wise.)
Kṛṣṇa, entering by a secret way in disguise as a speaker of Brahman, observed the power of the wise Jarāsandha. (2-39-3)
येन धर्मात्मनात्मानं ब्रह्मण्यमभिजानता। नैषितं पाद्यमस्मै तद्दातुमग्रे दुरात्मने ॥२-३९-४॥
yena dharmātmanātmānaṃ brahmaṇyamabhijānatā। naiṣitaṃ pādyamasmai taddātumagre durātmane ॥2-39-4॥
[येन (yena) - by whom; धर्मात्मना (dharmātmanā) - by the righteous-souled; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; ब्रह्मण्यं (brahmaṇyam) - Brahmanhood; अभिजानता (abhijānatā) - by the one who knows; नैषितम् (naiṣitam) - brought; पाद्यम् (pādyam) - water for washing feet; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; तत् (tat) - that; दातुम् (dātum) - to give; अग्रे (agre) - in front; दुरात्मने (durātmane) - to the wicked-souled;]
(By whom, by the righteous-souled, the self, Brahmanhood, by the one who knows, brought, water for washing feet, to him, that, to give, in front, to the wicked-souled.)
That water for washing the feet, which was brought by the righteous-souled knower of Brahman for himself, was not to be given in front to that wicked-souled person. (2-39-4)
भुज्यतामिति तेनोक्ताः कृष्णभीमधनञ्जयाः। जरासन्धेन कौरव्य कृष्णेन विकृतं कृतम् ॥२-३९-५॥
bhujyatāmiti tenoktāḥ kṛṣṇabhīmadhanañjayāḥ। jarāsandhena kauravya kṛṣṇena vikṛtaṃ kṛtam ॥2-39-5॥
[भुज्यताम् (bhujyatām) - let it be eaten; इति (iti) - thus; तेन (tena) - by him; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - addressed; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; भीम (bhīma) - Bhīma; धनञ्जयाः (dhanañjayāḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); जरासन्धेन (jarāsandhena) - by Jarāsandha; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; विकृतम् (vikṛtam) - strange act; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done;]
(Let it be eaten—thus addressed by him, Kṛṣṇa, Bhīma, and Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); by Jarāsandha, O descendant of Kuru, by Kṛṣṇa, a strange act was done.)
Kṛṣṇa, Bhīma, and Arjuna were told by Jarāsandha, 'Let it be eaten.' O descendant of Kuru, then Kṛṣṇa performed a strange act. (2-39-5)
यद्ययं जगतः कर्ता यथैनं मूर्ख मन्यसे। कस्मान्न ब्राह्मणं सम्यगात्मानमवगच्छति ॥२-३९-६॥
yadyayaṃ jagataḥ kartā yathainaṃ mūrkha manyase। kasmānna brāhmaṇaṃ samyagātmānamavagacchati ॥2-39-6॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; अयम् (ayam) - this; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; कर्ता (kartā) - creator; यथा (yathā) - as; एनम् (enam) - him; मूर्ख (mūrkha) - fool; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; न (na) - not; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - the Brāhmaṇa; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - the self; अवगच्छति (avagacchati) - understands;]
(If this (one) is the creator of the world, as you, fool, think him to be, why does the Brāhmaṇa not properly understand the self?)
If this is the creator of the world, as you, fool, think him to be, then why does the Brāhmaṇa not properly understand the self? (2-39-6)
इदं त्वाश्चर्यभूतं मे यदिमे पाण्डवास्त्वया। अपकृष्टाः सतां मार्गान्मन्यन्ते तच्च साध्विति ॥२-३९-७॥
idaṃ tvāścaryabhūtaṃ me yad ime pāṇḍavās tvayā। apakṛṣṭāḥ satāṃ mārgān manyante tac ca sādhv iti ॥2-39-7॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; तु (tu) - but; आश्चर्यभूतं (āścaryabhūtaṃ) - wonderful; मे (me) - to me; यत् (yat) - that; इमे (ime) - these; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - Pāṇḍavas; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अपकृष्टाः (apakṛṣṭāḥ) - led away; सतां (satāṃ) - of the good; मार्गान् (mārgān) - paths; मन्यन्ते (manyante) - they think; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; साधु (sādhu) - good; इति (iti) - thus;]
(This, however, is wonderful to me, that these Pāṇḍavas, led away by you, think the paths of the good to be otherwise, and consider that to be good thus.)
But it is astonishing to me that these Pāṇḍavas, having been led away by you, now consider the righteous paths to be otherwise, and think that to be good. (2-39-7)
अथ वा नैतदाश्चर्यं येषां त्वमसि भारत। स्त्रीसधर्मा च वृद्धश्च सर्वार्थानां प्रदर्शकः ॥२-३९-८॥
atha vā naitadāścaryaṃ yeṣāṃ tvamasi bhārata। strīsadharmā ca vṛddhaśca sarvārthānāṃ pradarśakaḥ ॥2-39-8॥
[अथ (atha) - now; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; आश्चर्यं (āścaryam) - wonder; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; स्त्रीसधर्मा (strīsadharmā) - having the nature of a woman; च (ca) - and; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - old; च (ca) - and; सर्वार्थानाम् (sarvārthānām) - of all purposes; प्रदर्शकः (pradarśakaḥ) - one who shows;]
(Now or, this is not a wonder for those of whom you are, O Bhārata, having the nature of a woman and old and one who shows all purposes.)
Or else, O Bhārata, it is not surprising for those to whom you belong, since you are of feminine nature, aged, and a guide to all matters. (2-39-8)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा रूक्षं रूक्षाक्षरं बहु। चुकोप बलिनां श्रेष्ठो भीमसेनः प्रतापवान् ॥२-३९-९॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā rūkṣaṃ rūkṣākṣaraṃ bahu। cukopa balināṃ śreṣṭho bhīmasenaḥ pratāpavān ॥2-39-9॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तत्-वचनम् (tat-vacanam) - those words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; रूक्षम् (rūkṣam) - harsh; रूक्ष-अक्षरम् (rūkṣ-akṣaram) - harsh-syllabled; बहु (bahu) - many; चुकोप (cukopa) - became angry; बलिनाम् (balinām) - of the strong; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the foremost; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - the mighty;]
(Of him those words having heard, harsh, harsh-syllabled, many, became angry, of the strong, the foremost, Bhīmasena, the mighty.)
Hearing those many harsh and harsh-syllabled words of his, Bhīmasena, the foremost among the strong and the mighty, became angry. (2-39-9)
तस्य पद्मप्रतीकाशे स्वभावायतविस्तृते। भूयः क्रोधाभिताम्रान्ते रक्ते नेत्रे बभूवतुः ॥२-३९-१०॥
tasya padmapratīkāśe svabhāvāyatavistṛte। bhūyaḥ krodhābhitāmrānte rakte netre babhūvatuḥ ॥2-39-10॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; पद्मप्रतीकाशे (padmapratīkāśe) - lotus-like; स्वभावायतविस्तृते (svabhāvāyatavistṛte) - naturally wide and extended; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; क्रोधाभिताम्रान्ते (krodhābhitāmrānte) - reddened at the ends by intense anger; रक्ते (rakte) - red; नेत्रे (netre) - eyes; बभूवतुः (babhūvatuḥ) - became;]
(Of him, in the lotus-like, naturally wide and extended (eyes), again, at the ends intensely reddened by anger, the eyes became red.)
His eyes, naturally wide and lotus-like, once again became red at the ends with intense anger. (2-39-10)
त्रिशिखां भ्रुकुटीं चास्य ददृशुः सर्वपार्थिवाः। ललाटस्थां त्रिकूटस्थां गङ्गां त्रिपथगामिव ॥२-३९-११॥
triśikhāṃ bhrukuṭīṃ cāsya dadṛśuḥ sarvapārthivāḥ। lalāṭasthāṃ trikūṭasthāṃ gaṅgāṃ tripathagāmiva ॥2-39-11॥
[त्रि (tri) - three; शिखां (śikhāṃ) - crest; भ्रुकुटीं (bhrukuṭīṃ) - eyebrow; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; सर्व (sarva) - all; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - kings; ललाटस्थां (lalāṭasthāṃ) - situated on the forehead; त्रिकूटस्थां (trikūṭasthāṃ) - situated on the three peaks; गङ्गां (gaṅgāṃ) - Ganga; त्रिपथगाम् (tripathagām) - moving in three paths; इव (iva) - like;]
(All the kings saw his three-crested eyebrow, and the Ganga situated on his forehead, situated on the three peaks, like one moving in three paths.)
All the kings saw his three-pointed eyebrow and the Ganga, which was situated on his forehead and on the three peaks, flowing in three paths, like the river herself. (2-39-11)
दन्तान्संदशतस्तस्य कोपाद्ददृशुराननम्। युगान्ते सर्वभूतानि कालस्येव दिधक्षतः ॥२-३९-१२॥
dantān saṃdaśatas tasya kopād dadṛśur ānanam। yugānte sarvabhūtāni kālasyeva didhakṣataḥ ॥2-39-12॥
[दन्तान् (dantān) - teeth; (accusative plural) संदशतः (saṃdaśataḥ) - biting together; तस्य (tasya) - his; कोपात् (kopāt) - from anger; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; आननम् (ānanam) - face; युगान्ते (yugānte) - at the end of an age; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; कालस्य (kālasya) - of Time; इव (iva) - like; दिधक्षतः (didhakṣataḥ) - desiring to burn;]
(They saw his face biting the teeth together from anger, like all beings at the end of an age desiring to burn, like that of Time.)
They saw his face, teeth clenched in anger, resembling Time at the end of an age, as if wishing to consume all beings. (2-39-12)
उत्पतन्तं तु वेगेन जग्राहैनं मनस्विनम्। भीष्म एव महाबाहुर्महासेनमिवेश्वरः ॥२-३९-१३॥
utpatantaṃ tu vegena jagrāhainaṃ manasvinam। bhīṣma eva mahābāhurmahāsenamiveśvaraḥ ॥2-39-13॥
[उत्पतन्तम् (utpatantam) - rising; तु (tu) - but; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; एनम् (enam) - him; मनस्विनम् (manasvinam) - the spirited one; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; एव (eva) - indeed; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; महासेनम् (mahāsenam) - great army; इव (iva) - like; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - lord;]
(But rising with speed, he seized him, the spirited one; Bhishma indeed, the mighty-armed, like a lord of a great army.)
But as he rose swiftly, Bhishma, the mighty-armed, seized the spirited one, like a lord of a great army. (2-39-13)
तस्य भीमस्य भीष्मेण वार्यमाणस्य भारत। गुरुणा विविधैर्वाक्यैः क्रोधः प्रशममागतः ॥२-३९-१४॥
tasya bhīmasya bhīṣmeṇa vāryamāṇasya bhārata। guruṇā vividhairvākyaiḥ krodhaḥ praśamamāgataḥ ॥2-39-14॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhīma; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhīṣma; वार्यमाणस्य (vāryamāṇasya) - being restrained; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; गुरुणा (guruṇā) - by the elder; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - with various; वाक्यैः (vākyaiḥ) - words; क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - anger; प्रशममागतः (praśamamāgataḥ) - came to calm;]
(Of him, of Bhīma, being restrained by Bhīṣma, O Bhārata, by the elder with various words, anger came to calm.)
O Bhārata, Bhīṣma, the elder, restrained Bhīma with various words, and his anger subsided. (2-39-14)
नातिचक्राम भीष्मस्य स हि वाक्यमरिंदमः। समुद्धूतो घनापाये वेलामिव महोदधिः ॥२-३९-१५॥
nāticakrāma bhīṣmasya sa hi vākyamariṃdamaḥ। samuddhūto ghanāpāye velāmiva mahodadhiḥ ॥2-39-15॥
[न (na) - not; अतिचक्राम (aticakrāma) - overstepped; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhīṣma; सः (saḥ) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - word; अरिंदमः (ariṃdamaḥ) - subduer of enemies; समुद्धूतः (samuddhūtaḥ) - stirred up; घनापाये (ghanāpāye) - when the clouds have departed; वेलाम् (velām) - shore; इव (iva) - like; महोदधिः (mahodadhiḥ) - the great ocean;]
(He did not overstep the word of Bhīṣma, the subduer of enemies; like the great ocean stirred up to the shore when the clouds have departed.)
He did not transgress Bhīṣma's command, for he was a subduer of enemies; like the great ocean, which, when stirred after the clouds have passed, does not cross its shore. (2-39-15)
शिशुपालस्तु सङ्क्रुद्धे भीमसेने नराधिप। नाकम्पत तदा वीरः पौरुषे स्वे व्यवस्थितः ॥२-३९-१६॥
śiśupālastu saṅkruddhe bhīmasene narādhipa। nākampata tadā vīraḥ pauruṣe sve vyavasthitaḥ ॥2-39-16॥

(Śiśupāla, but, when enraged, in Bhīmasena, O king, not was shaken, then, the hero, in his manliness, his own, firmly established.)
But Śiśupāla, O king, even when Bhīmasena was enraged, was not shaken; at that time, the hero stood firm in his own valor. (2-39-16)
उत्पतन्तं तु वेगेन पुनः पुनररिंदमः। न स तं चिन्तयामास सिंहः क्षुद्रमृगं यथा ॥२-३९-१७॥
utpatantaṃ tu vegena punaḥ punararindamaḥ। na sa taṃ cintayāmāsa siṃhaḥ kṣudramṛgaṃ yathā ॥2-39-17॥
[उत्पतन्तं (utpatantam) - leaping; तु (tu) - but; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अरिंदमः (arindamaḥ) - the subduer of enemies; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; तं (tam) - him; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - considered; सिंहः (siṃhaḥ) - lion; क्षुद्रमृगं (kṣudramṛgaṃ) - small animal; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Leaping but with speed again and again the subduer of enemies, not he him considered, as a lion (considers) a small animal.)
But though the subduer of enemies leapt at him again and again with speed, he did not consider him, just as a lion does not consider a small animal. (2-39-17)
प्रहसंश्चाब्रवीद्वाक्यं चेदिराजः प्रतापवान्। भीमसेनमतिक्रुद्धं दृष्ट्वा भीमपराक्रमम् ॥२-३९-१८॥
prahaṁsaṁ cābravīd vākyam cedirājaḥ pratāpavān। bhīmasenam atikruddham dṛṣṭvā bhīmaparākramam ॥2-39-18॥
[प्रहसंश्च (prahaṁsaṁ ca) - smiling and; अब्रवीद् (abravīt) - said; वाक्यं (vākyam) - words; चेदिराजः (cedirājaḥ) - the king of Cedi; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - powerful; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhīmasena; अतिक्रुद्धं (atikruddham) - very enraged; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भीमपराक्रमम् (bhīmaparākramam) - Bhīma's prowess;]
(Smiling and, the powerful king of Cedi said words, having seen Bhīmasena very enraged and Bhīma's prowess.)
The powerful king of Cedi, smiling, spoke these words after seeing Bhīmasena extremely enraged and witnessing Bhīma's might. (2-39-18)
मुञ्चैनं भीष्म पश्यन्तु यावदेनं नराधिपाः। मत्प्रतापाग्निनिर्दग्धं पतङ्गमिव वह्निना ॥२-३९-१९॥
muñcainaṃ bhīṣma paśyantu yāvadenaṃ narādhipāḥ। matpratāpāgninirdagdhaṃ pataṅgamiva vahninā ॥2-39-19॥
[मुञ्च (muñca) - release; let go; एनम् (enam) - him; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhishma; पश्यन्तु (paśyantu) - let (them) see; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; एनम् (enam) - him; नराधिपाः (narādhipāḥ) - kings; rulers of men; मत् (mat) - my; प्रताप (pratāpa) - splendor; power; अग्नि (agni) - fire; निर्दग्धम् (nirdagdham) - burnt; पतङ्गम् (pataṅgam) - moth; इव (iva) - like; वह्निना (vahninā) - by fire;]
(Release him, O Bhishma, let the kings see him as long as (he is not yet) burnt by the fire of my splendor, like a moth by fire.)
O Bhishma, release him so that the kings may see him, before he is consumed by the fire of my power like a moth in a flame. (2-39-19)
ततश्चेदिपतेर्वाक्यं तच्छ्रुत्वा कुरुसत्तमः। भीमसेनमुवाचेदं भीष्मो मतिमतां वरः ॥२-३९-२०॥
tataś cedipater vākyaṃ tac chrutvā kurusattamaḥ। bhīmasenam uvācedaṃ bhīṣmo matimatāṃ varaḥ ॥2-39-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; च (ca) - and; एदि-पतेः (edi-pateḥ) - of the king of the Cedis; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कुरु-सत्तमः (kuru-sattamaḥ) - the best of the Kurus; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - to Bhīmasena; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; मतिमताम् (matimatām) - of the wise; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
(Then and of the king of the Cedis speech that having heard, the best of the Kurus, to Bhīmasena, said this, Bhīṣma, of the wise, the best.)
Then, having heard the words of the king of the Cedis, Bhīṣma, the foremost among the wise and the best of the Kurus, spoke this to Bhīmasena. (2-39-20)
