Pancharatra: Bhishma narrates about the boon given by Krishna to Shishupala’s mother.
भीष्म उवाच॥

Bhīṣma said.
चेदिराजकुले जातस्त्र्यक्ष एष चतुर्भुजः। रासभारावसदृशं रुराव च ननाद च ॥२-४०-१॥
cedirājakule jātastryakṣa eṣa caturbhujaḥ। rāsabhārāvasadṛśaṃ rurāva ca nanāda ca ॥2-40-1॥
[चेदिराजकुले (cedirājakule) - in the family of the Cedi king; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; त्र्यक्षः (tryakṣaḥ) - three-eyed; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; चतुर्भुजः (caturbhujaḥ) - four-armed; रासभारावसदृशम् (rāsabhārāvasadṛśam) - like the braying of a donkey; रुराव (rurāva) - he roared; च (ca) - and; ननाद (nanāda) - he bellowed; च (ca) - and;]
(In the family of the Cedi king, born three-eyed, this four-armed (being), like the braying of a donkey, roared and bellowed.)
Born in the family of the Cedi king, this three-eyed, four-armed being roared and bellowed like a donkey. (2-40-1)
तेनास्य मातापितरौ त्रेसतुस्तौ सबान्धवौ। वैकृतं तच्च तौ दृष्ट्वा त्यागाय कुरुतां मतिम् ॥२-४०-२॥
tenāsya mātāpitarau tresatustau sabāndhavau। vaikṛtaṃ tacca tau dṛṣṭvā tyāgāya kurutāṃ matim ॥2-40-2॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; अस्य (asya) - his; मातापितरौ (mātāpitarau) - mother and father; त्रेसतुः (tresatuḥ) - should be afraid; तौ (tau) - they two; स-बान्धवौ (sa-bāndhavau) - with relatives; वैकृतम् (vaikṛtam) - misconduct; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - they two; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; त्यागाय (tyāgāya) - for abandonment; कुरुताम् (kurutām) - should make; मतिम् (matim) - decision;]
(By him, his mother and father, with relatives, should be afraid; having seen that misconduct, those two should make a decision for abandonment.)
Therefore, his mother and father, along with their relatives, should be alarmed; seeing that misconduct, they both should decide to abandon him. (2-40-2)
ततः सभार्यं नृपतिं सामात्यं सपुरोहितम्। चिन्तासंमूढहृदयं वागुवाचाशरीरिणी ॥२-४०-३॥
tataḥ sabhāryaṃ nṛpatiṃ sāmātyaṃ sapurohitam। cintāsaṃmūḍhahṛdayaṃ vāguvācaaśarīriṇī ॥2-40-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सभार्यं (sabhāryam) - with wife; नृपतिं (nṛpatim) - king; सामात्यं (sāmātyam) - with ministers; सपुरोहितम् (sapurohitam) - with priest; चिन्तासंमूढहृदयं (cintāsaṃmūḍhahṛdayam) - whose heart was bewildered by anxiety; वाक् (vāk) - speech; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; अशरीरिणी (aśarīriṇī) - bodiless;]
(Then, to the king with his wife, with ministers, with priest, whose heart was bewildered by anxiety, speech bodiless spoke.)
Then, a bodiless voice spoke to the king, who was with his wife, ministers, and priest, and whose heart was bewildered by anxiety. (2-40-3)
एष ते नृपते पुत्रः श्रीमाञ्जातो महाबलः। तस्मादस्मान्न भेतव्यमव्यग्रः पाहि वै शिशुम् ॥२-४०-४॥
eṣa te nṛpate putraḥ śrīmāñ jāto mahābalaḥ। tasmād asmān na bhetavyam avyagraḥ pāhi vai śiśum ॥2-40-4॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; ते (te) - your; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; न (na) - not; भेतव्यम् (bhetavyam) - should be feared; अव्यग्रः (avyagraḥ) - unagitated; पाहि (pāhi) - protect; वै (vai) - indeed; शिशुम् (śiśum) - the child;]
(This your O king son prosperous born of great strength therefore us not should be feared unagitated protect indeed the child.)
O king, this is your son, prosperous and born with great strength. Therefore, do not fear us; remain unagitated and indeed protect the child. (2-40-4)
न चैवैतस्य मृत्युस्त्वं न कालः प्रत्युपस्थितः। मृत्युर्हन्तास्य शस्त्रेण स चोत्पन्नो नराधिप ॥२-४०-५॥
na caivaitasya mṛtyustvaṃ na kālaḥ pratyupasthitaḥ। mṛtyur hantāsya śastreṇa sa cotpanno narādhipa ॥2-40-5॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; एतस्य (etasya) - of this; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; न (na) - not; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; प्रत्युपस्थितः (pratyupasthitaḥ) - has arrived; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; हन्ता (hantā) - killer; अस्य (asya) - of him; शस्त्रेण (śastreṇa) - by weapon; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; उत्पन्नः (utpannaḥ) - has arisen; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;]
(Not and indeed of this death you, not time has arrived. Death killer of him by weapon, he and has arisen, O king.)
O king, neither are you the death of this one, nor has his destined time arrived. The killer is death itself, arisen by the weapon.
संश्रुत्योदाहृतं वाक्यं भूतमन्तर्हितं ततः। पुत्रस्नेहाभिसन्तप्ता जननी वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२-४०-६॥
saṃśrutyodāhṛtaṃ vākyaṃ bhūtam antarhitaṃ tataḥ। putrasnehābhisantaptā jananī vākyam abravīt ॥2-40-6॥
[संश्रुत्य (saṃśrutya) - having heard; उदाहृतं (udāhṛtam) - uttered; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; भूतम् (bhūtam) - that which has happened; अन्तर्हितं (antarhitam) - concealed; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; पुत्रस्नेह (putrasneha) - affection for her son; अभिसन्तप्ता (abhisantaptā) - greatly afflicted; जननी (jananī) - the mother; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Having heard the uttered speech, that which had happened and was concealed, thereafter, greatly afflicted by affection for her son, the mother spoke words.)
After hearing the spoken words about what had happened and was hidden, the mother, overwhelmed by affection for her son, spoke these words. (2-40-6)
येनेदमीरितं वाक्यं ममैव तनयं प्रति। प्राञ्जलिस्तं नमस्यामि ब्रवीतु स पुनर्वचः ॥२-४०-७॥
yenedamīritaṃ vākyaṃ mamaiva tanayaṃ prati। prāñjalistaṃ namasyāmi bravītu sa punarvacaḥ ॥2-40-7॥
[येन् (yen) - by whom; इदम् (idam) - this; ईरितम् (īritam) - spoken; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - statement; मम (mama) - my; एव (eva) - indeed; तनयम् (tanayam) - son; प्रति (prati) - towards; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with folded hands; तम् (tam) - him; नमस्यामि (namasyāmi) - I bow; ब्रवीतु (bravītu) - may he speak; सः (saḥ) - he; पुनः (punar) - again; वचः (vacaḥ) - word;]
(By whom this statement was spoken towards my own son, to him with folded hands I bow; may he speak that word again.)
I bow with folded hands to him who spoke this statement to my own son; may he speak those words again. (2-40-7)
श्रोतुमिच्छामि पुत्रस्य कोऽस्य मृत्युर्भविष्यति। अन्तर्हितं ततो भूतमुवाचेदं पुनर्वचः ॥२-४०-८॥
śrotum icchāmi putrasya ko'sya mṛtyur bhaviṣyati। antarhitaṃ tato bhūtam uvāca idaṃ punar vacaḥ ॥2-40-8॥
[श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of the son; कः (kaḥ) - who; अस्य (asya) - his; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; अन्तर्हितम् (antarhitam) - disappeared; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भूतम् (bhūtam) - the being; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(I wish to hear whose death of the son will be. The disappeared being then said this speech again.)
I wish to know whose death among the sons will occur. Then the vanished being spoke these words again. (2-40-8)
येनोत्सङ्गे गृहीतस्य भुजावभ्यधिकावुभौ। पतिष्यतः क्षितितले पञ्चशीर्षाविवोरगौ ॥२-४०-९॥
yenotsaṅge gṛhītasya bhujāvabhyadhikāvubhau। patiṣyataḥ kṣititale pañcaśīrṣāvivoragau ॥2-40-9॥
[येन (yena) - by whom; उत्सङ्गे (utsaṅge) - on the lap; गृहीतस्य (gṛhītasya) - of the one who is held; भुजौ (bhujau) - the two arms; अभ्यधिकौ (abhyadhikau) - exceeding; उभौ (ubhau) - both; पतिष्यतः (patiṣyataḥ) - of the one falling; क्षितितले (kṣititale) - on the ground; पञ्चशीर्षाविव (pañcaśīrṣā iva) - like five-headed (serpents); उरगौ (uragau) - serpents;]
(By whom, on the lap, of the one who is held, the two arms, both exceeding, of the one falling, on the ground, like five-headed serpents.)
By whom, on the lap of the one who is held, both arms, exceeding (in length), as he was falling to the ground, were like two serpents with five heads. (2-40-9)
तृतीयमेतद्बालस्य ललाटस्थं च लोचनम्। निमज्जिष्यति यं दृष्ट्वा सोऽस्य मृत्युर्भविष्यति ॥२-४०-१०॥
tṛtīyam etad bālasya lalāṭasthaṃ ca locanam। nimajjiṣyati yaṃ dṛṣṭvā so'sya mṛtyur bhaviṣyati ॥2-40-10॥
[तृतीयम् (tṛtīyam) - third; एतत् (etat) - this; बालस्य (bālasya) - of the boy; ललाटस्थम् (lalāṭastham) - situated on the forehead; च (ca) - and; लोचनम् (locanam) - eye; निमज्जिष्यति (nimajjiṣyati) - will sink; यं (yaṃ) - whom; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सः (saḥ) - he; अस्य (asya) - of him; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(The third, this of the boy, situated on the forehead and eye, will sink; whom having seen, he of him death will be.)
This third eye of the boy, situated on his forehead, will sink; whoever sees it, that person will die. (2-40-10)
त्र्यक्षं चतुर्भुजं श्रुत्वा तथा च समुदाहृतम्। धरण्यां पार्थिवाः सर्वे अभ्यगच्छन्दिदृक्षवः ॥२-४०-११॥
tryakṣaṃ caturbhujaṃ śrutvā tathā ca samudāhṛtam। dharaṇyāṃ pārthivāḥ sarve abhyagacchandidṛkṣavaḥ ॥2-40-11॥
[त्र्यक्षम् (tryakṣam) - three-eyed; चतुर्भुजम् (caturbhujam) - four-armed; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तथा (tathā) - thus; च (ca) - and; समुदाहृतम् (samudāhṛtam) - described; धरण्यां (dharaṇyām) - on the earth; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - kings; सर्वे (sarve) - all; अभ्यगच्छन् (abhyagacchan) - approached; दिदृक्षवः (didṛkṣavaḥ) - desiring to see;]
(Having heard of the three-eyed, four-armed (form) thus described, all the kings on the earth approached, desiring to see (it).)
When they heard the description of the three-eyed, four-armed form, all the kings on earth came there, eager to behold it. (2-40-11)
तान्पूजयित्वा सम्प्राप्तान्यथार्हं स महीपतिः। एकैकस्य नृपस्याङ्के पुत्रमारोपयत्तदा ॥२-४०-१२॥
tān pūjayitvā samprāptān yathārhaṃ sa mahīpatiḥ। ekaikasya nṛpasyāṅke putram āropayat tadā ॥2-40-12॥
[तान् (tān) - them; (accusative plural of 'tat') पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having honored; (absolutive of 'pūj') सम्प्राप्तान् (samprāptān) - arrived; (accusative plural of 'samprāpta') यथार्हम् (yathārham) - as deserved; (indeclinable) ; सः (saḥ) - he; (nominative singular of 'sa') महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king; (nominative singular) ; एकैकस्य (ekaikasya) - of each; (genitive singular) ; नृपस्य (nṛpasya) - of the king; (genitive singular) ; अङ्के (aṅke) - on the lap; (locative singular) ; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; (accusative singular) ; आरोपयत् (āropayat) - placed; (imperfect, 3rd person singular) ; तदा (tadā) - then; (indeclinable) ;]
(Having honored them who had arrived as deserved, he, the king, then placed the son on the lap of each king.)
After duly honoring those who had arrived, the king then placed the son on the lap of each king. (2-40-12)
एवं राजसहस्राणां पृथक्त्वेन यथाक्रमम्। शिशुरङ्के समारूढो न तत्प्राप निदर्शनम् ॥२-४०-१३॥
evaṃ rājasahasrāṇāṃ pṛthaktvena yathākramam। śiśuraṅke samārūḍho na tatprāpa nidarśanam ॥2-40-13॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; राजसहस्राणां (rājasahasrāṇām) - of thousands of kings; पृथक्त्वेन (pṛthaktvena) - by separateness; यथाक्रमम् (yathākramam) - in due order; शिशुः (śiśuḥ) - the child; अङ्के (aṅke) - on the lap; समारूढः (samārūḍhaḥ) - having mounted; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; प्राप (prāpa) - attained; निदर्शनम् (nidarśanam) - example;]
(Thus, of thousands of kings, by separateness, in due order, the child having mounted on the lap did not attain that example.)
In this way, among thousands of kings, even when considered separately and in due order, the child sitting on the lap did not reach that example. (2-40-13)
ततश्चेदिपुरं प्राप्तौ सङ्कर्षणजनार्दनौ। यादवौ यादवीं द्रष्टुं स्वसारं तां पितुस्तदा ॥२-४०-१४॥
tataś cedi-puraṃ prāptau saṅkarṣaṇa-janārdanau। yādavau yādavīṃ draṣṭuṃ svasāraṃ tāṃ pitus tadā ॥2-40-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; च (ca) - and; एदि-पुरम् (cedi-puram) - the city of the Cedis; प्राप्तौ (prāptau) - arrived (dual); सङ्कर्षण-जनार्दनौ (saṅkarṣaṇa-janārdanau) - Saṅkarṣaṇa and Janārdana (Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa, dual); यादवौ (yādavau) - the two Yādavas (dual); यादवीं (yādavīm) - the Yādavī (Subhadrā); द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; स्वसारम् (svasāram) - sister; ताम् (tām) - her; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then Saṅkarṣaṇa and Janārdana, the two Yādavas, arrived at the city of the Cedis to see their sister, the daughter of their father, at that time.)
Then Saṅkarṣaṇa and Janārdana, the two Yādavas, came to the city of the Cedis to visit their sister Subhadrā at that time. (2-40-14)
अभिवाद्य यथान्यायं यथाज्येष्ठं नृपांश्च तान्। कुशलानामयं पृष्ट्वा निषण्णौ रामकेशवौ ॥२-४०-१५॥
abhivādya yathā-nyāyaṃ yathā-jyeṣṭhaṃ nṛpāṃś ca tān। kuśalānām ayam pṛṣṭvā niṣaṇṇau rāma-keśavau ॥2-40-15॥
[अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; यथा (yathā) - according to; न्यायम् (nyāyam) - custom; यथा (yathā) - according to; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) - seniority; नृपान् (nṛpān) - kings; च (ca) - and; तान् (tān) - them; कुशलानाम् (kuśalānām) - of the welfare; अयम् (ayam) - this (person); पृष्ट्वा (pṛṣṭvā) - having asked; निषण्णौ (niṣaṇṇau) - sat down (dual); रामकेशवौ (rāma-keśavau) - Rama and Keshava (Lakshmana);]
(Having saluted them, the kings, according to custom and seniority, and having asked about their welfare, these two, Rama and Keshava, sat down.)
After respectfully saluting the kings as per custom and seniority, and inquiring about their welfare, Rama and Keshava (Lakshmana) sat down. (2-40-15)
अभ्यर्चितौ तदा वीरौ प्रीत्या चाभ्यधिकं ततः। पुत्रं दामोदरोत्सङ्गे देवी संन्यदधात्स्वयम् ॥२-४०-१६॥
abhyarcitau tadā vīrau prītyā cābhyadhikaṃ tataḥ। putraṃ dāmodarotsaṅge devī saṃnyadadhātsvayam ॥2-40-16॥
[अभ्यर्चितौ (abhyarcitau) - having been worshipped; तदा (tadā) - then; वीरौ (vīrau) - the two heroes; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; च (ca) - and; अभ्यधिकं (abhyadhikaṃ) - exceedingly; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; दामोदर (dāmodara) - Dāmodara; उत्सङ्गे (utsaṅge) - on the lap; देवी (devī) - the goddess; संन्यदधात् (saṃnyadadhāt) - placed; स्वयम् (svayam) - herself;]
(Having been worshipped then, the two heroes, with affection and exceedingly thereafter, the goddess herself placed her son Dāmodara on her lap.)
After the two heroes had been worshipped with great affection, the goddess herself placed her son Dāmodara on her lap. (2-40-16)
न्यस्तमात्रस्य तस्याङ्के भुजावभ्यधिकावुभौ। पेततुस्तच्च नयनं निममज्ज ललाटजम् ॥२-४०-१७॥
nyastamātrasya tasyāṅke bhujāvabhyadhikāvubhau। petatustacca nayanaṃ nimamajja lalāṭajam ॥2-40-17॥
[न्यस्तमात्रस्य (nyastamātrasya) - of the one whose measure (body) was placed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; अङ्के (aṅke) - on the lap; भुजाव् (bhujau) - the two arms; अभ्यधिकौ (abhyadhikau) - exceeding; उभौ (ubhau) - both; पेततुः (petatuḥ) - fell down; तच्च (tacca) - and that; नयनम् (nayanam) - eye; निममज्ज (nimamajja) - sank; ललाटजम् (lalāṭajam) - forehead-born (teardrop);]
(Of the one whose body was placed, on his lap, both arms exceeding, fell down; and that eye sank (into) the forehead-born (teardrop).)
As the body was placed on his lap, both arms, exceeding in length, fell down; and his eye sank into the teardrop that sprang from his forehead. (2-40-17)
तद्दृष्ट्वा व्यथिता त्रस्ता वरं कृष्णमयाचत। ददस्व मे वरं कृष्ण भयार्ताया महाभुज ॥२-४०-१८॥
taddṛṣṭvā vyathitā trastā varaṃ kṛṣṇamayācata। dadasva me varaṃ kṛṣṇa bhayārtāyā mahābhuja ॥2-40-18॥
[तत् (tat) - that; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; व्यथिता (vyathitā) - distressed; त्रस्ता (trastā) - frightened; वरम् (varam) - boon; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; अयाचत (ayācata) - asked; ददस्व (dadasva) - give; मे (me) - to me; वरम् (varam) - boon; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; भयार्तायाः (bhayārtāyāḥ) - to the one afflicted by fear; महाभुज (mahābhuja) - O mighty-armed;]
(Having seen that, distressed and frightened, she asked Kṛṣṇa for a boon. "Give me a boon, O Kṛṣṇa, to the one afflicted by fear, O mighty-armed.")
Seeing that, distressed and terrified, she sought a boon from Kṛṣṇa. "Grant me a boon, O Kṛṣṇa, to me who am afflicted by fear, O mighty-armed one." (2-40-18)
त्वं ह्यार्तानां समाश्वासो भीतानामभयङ्करः। पितृष्वसारं मा भैषीरित्युवाच जनार्दनः ॥२-४०-१९॥
tvaṃ hyārtānāṃ samāśvāso bhītānām abhayaṅkaraḥ। pitṛṣvasāraṃ mā bhaiṣīr ity uvāca janārdanaḥ ॥2-40-19॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; आर्तानाम् (ārtānām) - of the distressed; समाश्वासः (samāśvāsaḥ) - comfort; भीतानाम् (bhītānām) - of the frightened; अभयङ्करः (abhayaṅkaraḥ) - giver of fearlessness; पितृष्वसारम् (pitṛṣvasāram) - to the paternal aunt's son; मा (mā) - do not; भैषीः (bhaiṣīḥ) - fear; इति (iti) - thus; उवाच (uvāca) - said; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana (Krishna);]
(You indeed are the comfort of the distressed, the giver of fearlessness to the frightened. To the paternal aunt's son, "Do not fear," thus said Janardana.)
You are truly the comforter of the distressed and the one who gives fearlessness to the frightened. Janardana said to his cousin, "Do not be afraid." (2-40-19)
ददानि कं वरं किं वा करवाणि पितृष्वसः। शक्यं वा यदि वाशक्यं करिष्यामि वचस्तव ॥२-४०-२०॥
dadāni kaṃ varaṃ kiṃ vā karavāṇi pitṛṣvasaḥ। śakyaṃ vā yadi vāśakyaṃ kariṣyāmi vacas tava ॥2-40-20॥
[ददानि (dadāni) - I shall give; कं (kaṃ) - what; वरं (varaṃ) - boon; किं (kiṃ) - what; वा (vā) - or; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - I shall do; पितृष्वसः (pitṛṣvasaḥ) - O father's sister; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; अशक्यं (aśakyaṃ) - impossible; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; तव (tava) - your;]
(I shall give what boon, or what (else) shall I do, O father's sister? Whether possible or impossible, I shall do your word.)
O father's sister, what boon shall I give, or what else shall I do? Whether it is possible or impossible, I will fulfill your word. (2-40-20)
एवमुक्ता ततः कृष्णमब्रवीद्यदुनन्दनम्। शिशुपालस्यापराधान्क्षमेथास्त्वं महाबल ॥२-४०-२१॥
evamuktā tataḥ kṛṣṇam abravīd yadunandanam। śiśupālasya aparādhān kṣamethāḥ tvaṃ mahābala ॥2-40-21॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ता (uktā) - having been spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - to Kṛṣṇa; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; यदुनन्दनम् (yadunandanam) - descendant of Yadu; शिशुपालस्य (śiśupālasya) - of Śiśupāla; अपराधान् (aparādhān) - offenses; क्षमेथाः (kṣamethāḥ) - may you forgive; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; महाबल (mahābala) - O mighty one;]
(Thus having been spoken, then (she) said to Kṛṣṇa, the descendant of Yadu: "May you, O mighty one, forgive the offenses of Śiśupāla.")
After these words, she then said to Kṛṣṇa, the descendant of Yadu: "O mighty one, may you forgive the offenses of Śiśupāla." (2-40-21)
कृष्ण उवाच॥

Kṛṣṇa said.
अपराधशतं क्षाम्यं मया ह्यस्य पितृष्वसः। पुत्रस्य ते वधार्हाणां मा त्वं शोके मनः कृथाः ॥२-४०-२२॥
aparādhaśataṃ kṣāmyaṃ mayā hyasya pitṛṣvasaḥ। putrasya te vadhārhāṇāṃ mā tvaṃ śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ ॥2-40-22॥
[अपराधशतं (aparādhaśatam) - hundred of offences; क्षाम्यं (kṣāmyaṃ) - to be forgiven; मया (mayā) - by me; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of this; पितृष्वसः (pitṛṣvasaḥ) - paternal aunt; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of the son; ते (te) - your; वधार्हाणां (vadhārhāṇām) - deserving of death; मा (mā) - do not; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; शोके (śoke) - in grief; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - make;]
(A hundred offences are to be forgiven by me indeed of this paternal aunt's son of yours, who is deserving of death; do not you make your mind in grief.)
Even if he has committed a hundred offences, I must forgive your paternal aunt's son, even though he deserves death; do not let your mind be overcome with grief. (2-40-22)
भीष्म उवाच॥

एवमेष नृपः पापः शिशुपालः सुमन्दधीः। त्वां समाह्वयते वीर गोविन्दवरदर्पितः ॥२-४०-२३॥
evameṣa nṛpaḥ pāpaḥ śiśupālaḥ sumandadhīḥ। tvāṃ samāhvayate vīra govindavaradarpitaḥ ॥2-40-23॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; पापः (pāpaḥ) - wicked; शिशुपालः (śiśupālaḥ) - Śiśupāla; सुमन्दधीः (sumandadhīḥ) - very dull-minded; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; समाह्वयते (samāhvayate) - challenges; वीर (vīra) - hero; गोविन्दवरदर्पितः (govindavaradarpitaḥ) - proud of the boon from Govinda;]
(Thus, this king, the wicked Śiśupāla, very dull-minded, challenges you, O hero, proud of the boon from Govinda.)
